KEYNOTE SPEAKER BRUCE J. KATZ Bruce Katz is a vice president at the Brookings Institution and founding director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. He is also co-author of The Metropolitan Revolution (Brookings Press, 2013), a distillation of his work on the emerging metropolitan-led “next economy” and its practitioners around the country working to produce more and better jobs driven by innovation, exports and sustainability.

2013 AWARD RECIPIENTS JACK ELLENBERG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IMPACT AWARD Jack Ellenberg is the senior vice president of economic development and projects with the SC State Ports Authority. He is responsible for the recruitment and location of port-dependent projects as well as the expansion of port-user businesses across the state. Ellenberg also oversees the South Carolina Inland Port. The South Carolina Inland Port opened in October 2013, extending the Port of Charleston’s reach 212 miles inland to Greer, S.C., and providing shippers with access to more than 95 million consumers within a one-day drive. The project is expected to have a substantial impact on economic development in the Upstate, which currently represents 60% of the export activity at the Port of Charleston.

FRANCES CROWDER EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE SERVICE AWARD Francis Crowder was appointed to the Anderson County Council in July of 2010 and is currently serving his second term. He served as Chairman of the Anderson County Council for 2013 and is a strong advocate for economic development. Crowder was elected to serve on the Upstate SC Alliance Executive Committee in 2012 representing the public sector. We are grateful for the leadership he has provided to the organization during his term, and thank him for his dedicated service to Anderson County and the Upstate.

MAX METCALF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP AWARD Max Metcalf is the manager of government and community relations for BMW Manufacturing Co. and currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer on the Upstate SC Alliance Executive Committee. Metcalf was appointed in November 2013 to lead the search for the new Upstate SC Alliance CEO. His strong commitment to the organization was evident by the amount of time and effort he dedicated to the process. In four months’ time, he assembled a committee and conducted the formal search resulting in the recent announcement of John Lummus as the organization’s new CEO.
