EARLY CHILDHOOD, STARTING AT AGE 3

At King School, we seek more than achievement for our students. We open minds and spark courageous thinking. Every day, our students discover and forge their unique paths to excellence as we teach, guide, and cheer them on. Because when we set better standards for both the experience and outcomes of education, students cultivate the insights and heart to own their future.

Young learners who see education as a place to experiment, create, construct, and connect develop a more expansive mindset about what school can offer them. They experience education as a path of discovery, understanding, wonder, and joy. These ideas are grounded in the Reggio-Emilia inspired, project-based teaching and learning practiced at King School. We encourage our PreKindergarten and Kindergarten learners to collaboratively explore intentionally created vibrant classroom spaces where children are actively engaged in the process of learning from the earliest ages. LOWER SCHOOL, GRADES 1-5

Students who are encouraged to ask questions and make their own discoveries become good listeners and critical thinkers who gain the confidence to take on challenges and seize unlimited possibilities. King’s Lower School program is an interactive, hands-on experience that nurtures a love of learning and working with others. MIDDLE SCHOOL, GRADES 6-8

Adolescents who delve into an expansive range of interests and topics are more likely to discover the multitude of their talents and passions, as well as identify opportunities for growth. The King Middle School promotes this self-exploration and selfawareness, encouraging students to discover their academic, artistic, and athletic talents in ways that foster balance, growth, and overall wellness. UPPER SCHOOL, GRADES 9-12

Young adults who are cheered on as they begin to take ownership of their ambitions and achievements feel like stars of a team designed and built for their drive for excellence. The King Upper School program empowers students to unleash their greatness by emphasizing self-knowledge, expansive learning, and courageous thinking — the very qualities that lead to happy, healthy, and purposeful lives. COLLEGE COUNSELING

When students and families engage in the college application process using their values, interests, and goals as foundational elements, they can better target colleges and universities where they will thrive. At King, we partner with students to harness their passions, capabilities, and ambitions to discover the most competitive fit for each student. This four-year developmental program, starting in Grade 9, enables students successfully to identify and apply to the colleges that will take them where they want to go.

Education Reinvented While other industries are inventing and reinventing around us, many educational institutions have stood still for more than a century, lacking the courage to innovate and create what today’s students require to own their future. At King School, we seek to set better standards for education — where the educational experience is as important as the outcome. At every opportunity, we look to the future and consider how education can better serve our community.

STUDENT-TEACHER PARTNERSHIP

King students are deeply known both as learners and as people by their teachers. As a result, they become better self-advocates and more responsible for their own emotional and academic well-being.

That’s why we teach students how to think — not what to think. At King, students pursue meaningful research, boldly intertwine academic subjects, and share their learning in diverse formats. They deepen their understanding through the give and take of different perspectives. They ask “What if?” and “Why not?” as they imagine their next ambition. In doing so, King students build the confidence, independence, and adaptability to achieve whatever they put their minds to.

HUMAN INSIGHTS A BETTER STANDARD

No two paths to excellence are the same. View on our website the more than 50 electives, clubs, activities, and projects students choose from. On our website, view King’s college matriculation and meet our alumni.

Our Innovation Lab provides Middle and Upper School students the tools, space, and guidance to inspire and nurture discovery. Through real-time critical thinking and trial-and-error activities, students learn to design solutions to real-world problems. Other campus hubs for discovering and creating include the Lower School Makerspace, the STEM lab, computer and film production labs, science labs, art studios, recording studio, and scene shop.

LEARNING IN COMMUNITY

Upper School students gather throughout the year to demonstrate their learning during King Talks, a forum for sharing passions, relating experience, and enhancing presentation skills. Recent talks have ranged from animal rescue, to South African education, to Latin music.

STRONGER TOGETHER

Our interdisciplinary service program includes the yearly King Cares 5k race, which unites our school community in support of the Orphan Starfish Foundation’s work in Colombia, as well as the Connecticut-area Boys and Girls Clubs. Together, we seek to drive positive change.

A Thrilling Adventure Schools that urge students to follow the expected path, check only the right boxes, and polish their resumes are failing our students — and breeding stress and anxiety. At King School, we set a better standard by encouraging students to see learning as a personal adventure; one without a defined beginning, middle, or end. King students take their learning and self-discovery further. They engage deeply with the experience of education — not just mastering material, but also inviting collaboration, applying knowledge, and making unexpected discoveries. This King mindset serves students as they build happy, healthy, purposeful lives.

Students take part in service and exchange programs, fieldwork, language studies, athletic competitions, and club work such as Model UN.

FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE

King students discover and practice learning in tangible ways. As a result, they experience concepts more fully, synthesize disparate disciplines, and reach deeper understanding.

FOCUS ON GRADE 5

Being part of a story and taking on a different identity as part of acting in a performance allows Middle School students to build imagination and self-confidence. — Amy Dartnon, Performing Arts faculty

SEEN & SUPPORTED

Learning and self-discovery thrive when young people are presented with the right opportunities and challenges at the right times. King’s Department of Teaching and Learning partners with teachers to understand each students’ goals, skills, patterns, and progress.

VISIONARY EXPLORERS

King’s Advanced Science Program for Independent Research and Engineering (ASPIRE) creates opportunities for students to delve into research methods and pursue their own research in internships at our nation’s premier university research labs.

No Two Paths Are the Same Children shine in schools that encourage self-discovery and build their confidence in exploring more things — not picking one pursuit. King School sets a better standard by cultivating a student-centered environment in which children thrive because they can become “both/and”: a rower and a robot-maker, a designer and a defenseman, a chemist and a choreographer.

King fosters Grade 5 students’ leadership skills to prepare them for greater independence in Middle School by asking them to lead the charge in organizing enrichment programs and assembly programs.

We are mathematicians, actors, athletes, writers, artists, debaters, and so much more. We are a family. We are all unique individuals. — Luke B., Upper School student

VERSATILE THINKERS

Our Middle School schedule is designed to encourage students to experience a broad and deep selection of co-curricular course offerings. This includes computer science, diverse performing and visual arts programs, and a wide range of clubs and activities.

THE KING NETWORK

King’s deep connection with our alumni family enriches our entire community. Alumni from all of our predecessor schools regularly return to King to provide their perspective on leveraging a King education throughout a lifetime. Recent alumni share their guidance on college life as part of workshops with Upper School students. Others connect with the King community during career and mentoring days, social activities, Homecoming, and annual athletic events where alumni-athletes compete with and against current students.

A Better Way to Be Your Best When children are told there are only a few achievements worth striving for, and that their friends are really their competitors, their creativity and independence are stifled. At King School, students ask more of their education than a race to the finish. They cultivate not only the knowledge and insights to own their futures, but also the heart. King students challenge and support one another in the pursuit of wide-ranging achievements. They prioritize empathy, authenticity, collaboration, and courage. As a result, they work together and build the confidence to achieve every ambition.
