MISSOURI STATE SQUASH FINALS “B” final: Umair Iqbal v. Deena Iqbal In the “B” finals, father Umair Iqbal took on his daughter Deena “the Smiling Assassin” Iqbal in a classic showdown. While Umair fought hard, it seemed the student had surpassed her teacher as Deena took down her father in three games. “A”: final: Preston Amos v. Ethan Oetter The MAC’s Amos looked to defend his title as he headed into the “A” finals. After a hard-fought first game, it looked like he might have an easy time of repeating last year’s success, however, Raquet Club (RC)’s Ethan Oetter had other plans, tying it up in the second game. Unfortunately for him, Amos returned with a vengeance, and after two-hard fought battles, he claimed the title. Ladies final: Meg Pruett v. Deena Iqbal MAC ladies’ squash standout Meg Pruett faced RC’s Deena Iqbal in a muchanticipated match. In the first game, Pruett raced to a quick lead, but Iqbal came from behind and took the lead. The second game saw another win for Iqbal. True to her nickname, Iqbal, the “Smiling Assassin,” took the third match and won the competition. “C” final: Sameer Shafqat v. Jon Keating MAC’s Sameer Shafqat was looking to take his first Missouri State title as he took on RC’s Jon Keating. After a close game, Keating pulled ahead for the win. In game two, Keating got an early lead, but Shafquat quickly came back. Unfortunately, Keating came back and won. The third ended in a similar fashion, and Keating won the title. “D” final: Dan Tlapek v. Brett Siegfried In the “D” finals, Dan Tlapek of the MAC took on Brett Siegfried, both playing in their first State Championship final. This match went the full distance, making it to five games. After a few exciting games, Siegfried took the title in the last game. Thanks to everyone for a great day of squash, and congratulations to the new Missouri State 2020 Champions.
