The Military History Club will be offering two programs spanning the breadth of World War II in the upcoming weeks. The meeting on Tuesday, May 24 at 12 p.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse will take the form of a book club and roundtable discussion. Member Raese Simpson, a 1961 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, will lead the discussion of Admiral Nimitz: The Commander of the Pacific Ocean Theater by Brayton Harris. The discussion will range beyond the limits of the book to include reflections on Admiral Nimitz’s influence on World War II in the Pacific. On Monday, June 6, the 78th Anniversary of D-Day, the MHC will host a military history movie night featuring CBS Reports “D-Day Plus 20 Years - Eisenhower Returns to Normandy.” Members are encouraged to join at 6 p.m. at the West Clubhouse for a viewing of this on-site interview of Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower by legendary CBS reporter Walter Cronkite. Originally aired in 1964, this report follows Eisenhower and Cronkite over the staging, landing and inland areas of the greatest amphibious landing in history. 10 YEARS AND COUNTING AT THE MAC!

Recently the MAC Book Club celebrated its tenth anniversary. At the first meeting, a small group gathered to discuss “In the Garden of Beasts” by Erik Larson in April 2012. From the beginning, the co-founders, Judge Mark Neill and Dr. Genie McKee knew this book club would be different. Men and women would be reading and discussing the books, so no “chick lit!” The Book Club meets at the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. to discuss books during cocktail hour. After the discussion Members enjoy dinner together. The model has been maintained since the founding of the club. Spouses of Members began to join the group for dinner, and some are now participating in the book discussions! The club has grown with 16-20 members at each meeting. Before the pandemic, the Book Club took field trips to hear lectures from authors on tours, such as Ann Patchett and Daniel James Brown who wrote “The Boys in the Boat.” Of course, during the first year of the pandemic, the group met by zoom and during the summer months met outside. Learning from the lockdown experience, more and more authors are willing to visit the club via zoom. Recently, the author Elizabeth M. Norman discussed her book, “We Band of Angels,” about American nurses trapped on Bataan during WWII. A list of the 100+ books read in the last ten years is available online under Social > CWCs and Interest Groups beneath the Book Club tab. If interested in joining the book club, please contact Genie McKee at evmckee@gmail.com. F

STATEMENT

I am excited and honored to be considered as a potential board member. Being blessed to be associated with the MAC my entire life, I have fond memories of the Saturday Morning Boys Group, as well as many family events throughout my childhood. One of the first things I did after graduating from Mizzou, almost 20 years ago, was join the MAC. I am blessed to continue this legacy along with my wife Anna, giving our 4 children (all future members!) a similar upbringing at this phenomenal club. My family utilizes the club almost daily, working out or having dinners with family and friends at both locations. Owning my financial planning practice for almost 20 years, I do a lot of client entertaining, both Downtown and West. We attend the Father/Son Banquet, Jack Buck Awards, Galas, Foundations Golf Tournament, Boxing Night, Breakfast with Santa (the list goes on!) or relaxing at West’s pool. I am passionate about what this club has to offer and feel there is no better club - personally, professionally, or socially. The lifelong relationships we build at the MAC are second to none! I served as president of the Associates Group and served on the Membership Committee, bringing in numerous members. I was also active in the Basketball League and plan to make my ‘comeback’ in the upcoming tournament. I am passionate about the membership having an incredible experience both now, and in the future, and I assure you that, as a governor, I will do my best to make sure this happens. Thank you for considering me!

We hope to continue these sponsorships well into the future. I use the club constantly for meetings, workouts, and hosting out-of-town customers. I look forward to listening and learning from the great leaders currently on the board and hope to contribute in a positive way to forward the success of this great club. I am proud to be part of the leadership group that has grown Redbird Carriers from a regional company to a nationwide leader in our industry. I live in Webster Groves with my family which mainly involves school and sports in the backyard and driveway. STATEMENT

The MAC has and continues to play a valuable role in my life, as well as serve as the very special place our family chooses to make lifetime memories. The MAC has always provided a safe and special opportunity to exercise, socialize, learn, relax and celebrate. Its rich history and tremendous potential to thrive is exciting. It is where I asked my father-in-law for my wife’s hand in marriage, held our rehearsal dinner and celebrated numerous birthdays and anniversaries. My service on the Charitable Society for Children and Sports Foundation has enabled me to work with many current and former Governors as well as the MAC staff to understand the inner workings of the MAC. This gives me great knowledge and insight to help lead the MAC for current members as well as future generations. It would be an honor to serve on the Board and extend my time and efforts to give back to such a wonderful place that has provided so much enrichment to myself and my family.

STATEMENT

I joined the MAC during a corporate relocation from Boston and lived at the Downtown clubhouse for nearly two years – a unique experience! The warm welcome, support and fellowship I received – from members and staff alike – turned St. Louis from a temporary waypoint into my family’s adopted hometown. Eleven years have passed in a blink of an eye. Our bonds with the MAC have grown throughout - enduring friendships, professional connections, happy memories, and annual traditions - from Breakfast with Santa, Mother’s Day, and Easter Brunches to Good Fellowship Day and club elections. I serve on club committees, and use our dining facilities and reciprocal clubs frequently. I am honored to stand for election to the Board of Governors and would be privileged to serve the organization that means so much to my family and me. If elected, I would contribute broad executive leadership skills from a twenty-five-year career leading complex, high-value transactions and strategic initiatives within large corporations, and as an investment banker – skills relevant to the unique opportunities and challenges facing the MAC in our current environment. I am committed to preserving our club traditions and improving member experiences, while working to broaden the appeal of our club.

STATEMENT

The MAC has become a part of my daily life. In it I have found a place of friendship and social engagement, challenge and opportunity, and health. The friendships built are for life. The social engagement provides escape from the pressures of crisis management response and complex change delivery in a global financial institution that is second largest in the US and eighth in the world. The challenge and opportunity comes from leveraging professional experience to find ways to continue to build tradition, strengthen female engagement and increase exposure to the Club and connect with our community. And of course health – our top quality facilities provide for strength training and conditioning reminiscent of my SLU basketball playing days. In addition to the other committees, it’s been an honor to chair the Women’s Initiative Group and Women of Distinction event these past several years – we strive to make it more impactful each year. I want to help the MAC continue to make an impact on our members’ lives and within our St Louis community. That’s why I am running for the Board of Governors. Thank you for your consideration.

STATEMENT

During my previous tenure as a Board of Governor we had some major decisions that I was involved with concerning leadership at the club. As we move forward we will have new decisions made that will impact the club for the next ten years and my experience will be of great value to the MAC. I was involved in transformational issues that opened the MAC to women having full membership, the wise decision to buy the Town and Country Racquet Club (MAC-West), and investment in club facilities to enhance the members experience. My construction background and knowledge of both club houses will be beneficial to the members as we continue to make capital improvements. My company was honored to be the firm that did the complete renovation for the outside of the downtown facility. I am committed to the MAC and would be honored to provide my experience and knowledge to serve again. Thank you for your support.
