MAC MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

The Missouri Athletic Club continues to grow and expand throughout every aspect of the Club, including Membership. There have been many exciting changes recently, such as the recent reopening of the Jack Buck Grille and the 1903 Dining Room. Perhaps the most exciting thing has been the influx of new Members who are looking for fellowship with exceptional people and seeking extraordinary experiences, service and tradition. With this growing interest in Membership and the current waitlist to gain access to the West Clubhouse, it follows that the initiation fee to join the MAC should reflect a certain level of prestige. Effective Dec. 7, the initiation fee will be raised to $3,500 for Resident and Junior Resident Memberships and $1,750 for Associate Members. Affected new Members would be joining the Club in January of 2023. All Membership Nomination forms received by Dec. 6 will still receive the current rates of $2,500 for Resident and Junior Resident Members and $1,250 for Associate Members. Rest assured that this decision to raise the initiation fee is not taking place solely to take advantage of the current situation but rather to ensure the best possible Membership experience for all MAC Members. Comparative analysis of local St. Louis clubs and similar athletic clubs across the country shows that the MAC’s initiation fees still offer an incredible value for Members. As with every initiation fee increase, there tends to be a rush of incoming Members hoping to establish their Membership before the increase takes effect. Please let your friends, relatives and associates know to submit their applications as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute application rush.

HONOR VETERANS

THIS VETERANS DAY

Join the Missouri Athletic Club and St. Louis Rotary Club at the Downtown Clubhouse for the annual Veterans Day Commemoration on Nov. 10 at 11:15 a.m. The MAC welcomes Keynote Speaker and Guest of Honor, Major General Vincent B. Barker to honor the Veteran of the Year, Veteran of Achievement and Lifetime Dedication Awardee.

VETERAN OF THE YEAR: LIEUTENANT COLONEL DON WOLFINGER

Lieutenant Colonel Don Wolfinger served 21 years in active duty. He has continued to advocate for military personnel (active duty, retired and veterans) and their families, including surviving spouses. While on active duty, he had a variety of assignments in command and staff positions at all levels. As a member of the Military Officers Association of America, he has led the Advocacy in Action, engaging the Missouri Congressional Delegation, focusing key pay and benefits issues. At the same time, there was a need to address many issues at the State level. He and Colonel Tom Robillard established the State Legislative Exchange Forum.

In the local community, he leads an older-adult ministry action team that provides opportunities for learning and fellowship. He is an active supporter of the inner-city Junior ROTC to emphasize leadership development. Wolfinger recently married Carolyn Brewington. They had both lost their spouses, but there was something missing in their lives. It was the love of God that brought them together.

Awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal w/Oakleaf, Air Medal and the Army Staff Badge.

VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT: TIM SMITH SR.

Native-born St. Louisan, retired Sergeant Tim Smith Sr. graduated from Affton high school and went on to play junior college basketball at Forest Park Community College. He missed being a part of a team, so he enlisted in the Army and served from 2003-2007. Smith was part of the 1st Armored Division 4-27FA. While deployed to Iraq in 2004, he did a lot of security for convoys and guard duty. In 2009, Smith became a Pat Tillman Military Scholar, which paid his way through the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. In 2011, he founded Patriot Commercial Cleaning, which over the years, has hired over 51 veterans and 22 family members of veterans. Later in 2019, he founded Patriot Industries, a company specializing in low slope roofing and architectural shingles. Due to burn pit exposure while serving in Iraq, he has beaten lung cancer three times and feels very fortunate. He believes he still has much to offer after serving in the Military, and it is an honor for him to keep serving the veteran community.

LIFETIME DEDICATION: RAY BUENEMAN

A native St. Louisan, Ray Bueneman has always been happiest as a team member working toward the success of any group. While a student at St. Louis Beaumont High School, Bueneman was selected to play for the American Legion, Fred W. Stockham Post #245 baseball team, where he helped Stockham Post win the 1956 American Legion Junior Baseball League National Championship. Even today, he continues to maintain strong relationships with the 1956 team members. Bueneman enlisted in the Air National Guard while still in high school and served in France during the Vietnam War coalescing the work of his team. Members of American Legion, Stockham – St. Louis Post #4 have also benefitted from his service as commander, followed by years as adjutant.
