The Journey of Motherhood...

Motherhood is a journey and one of my biggest honors in my life is being a mom to my beautiful daughter Megan and handsome son Dustin. My children are young adults now and my daughter and son in law has given me two beautiful grandchildren. Which is why I am so excited to be back at the Lake of the Ozarks. This past month has been a journey moving from Atlanta back to a small town in Missouri. If you have moved you know how “moving” goes. Every mile, every box packed and everything that didn’t go as planned was worth the journey back home to live close to my children and grandchildren. As a mother, the journey is not always perfect…but the journey is worth it. In the end, our children are what being a mother is all about. We’re so excited to have Dallas Ezard, who won Miss Missouri Teen USA 2016 featured on our cover this month. Dallas was inspired to compete in pageants by her mom, Stephanie Ezard, who won the Miss Missouri USA pageant in 1993. We’re honoring mothers like Stephanie Ezard who have inspired their daughters to follow in their footsteps yet raise a young lady who is talented, beautiful inside and out. nspired to Compete Honoring Mother’s this month we interviewed Dallas Ezard, Miss Missouri Teen USA 2016. Dallas was inspired to compete in pageants by her mom, Stephanie Ezard, who won the Miss Missouri USA pageant in 1993. Her main reason for competing is her passion for encouraging teens to be successful in not compromising their values just to fit in. Mother’s Day is coming up. How do you feel you have followed in your mother’s footsteps and what would you like to say about your mom? My mom is my biggest supporter. She is a former Miss Missouri USA so it has been an honor to share similar titles with her with a goal that I will also share the exact same title as Miss Missouri USA. She is my rock and my best friend. I am confident I would not have experienced all the amazing things I have so far in my life without her support, guidance and encouragement. What have you done with your year so far and what have you made a priority? This past year I have focused on my education while attending Lindenwood University. It’s always a priority of mine to do my best to stay grounded and live by my personal convictions.

What was the hardest part competing for Miss Missouri Teen USA? While the experience alone is nothing less than amazing, it’s vital to stay on top of your mental game and go strong mentally to an event like this. It’s so important to stay positive and confident in who you are. Being around 50 other beautiful, intelligent accomplished girls can

make you doubt yourself at times if you’re not careful. So that can be challenging at times. Have you competed in a pageant since Miss Misouri Teen USA? What are your plans for future competitions? | I have not competed in any other pageants since Miss Teen USA. I do have plans to eventually compete in Miss Missouri USA with a May 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

goal to win Miss USA. Where is the one place in the world that you would like to visit? I love to travel so it is hard to narrow it down to just one place. But I would love to visit Australia. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a beautiful location and I love the Aussie accents. I find myself practicing that accent often just for fun. I think I have it down.

I will also continue to model when I can and explore any opportunities that may arise. I am also hopeful that winning another title may happen sometime within the next five years.

What do you plan to do over the next five years? I plan to continue to focus on my education and get my degree.

Being a college student I find that my style this past year has

been more casual. However, I view my overall fashion style as Trendier. I like to stay up on what’s “ in” and incorporate some of the latest styles into my wardrobe. What is your favorite fashion piece? At the present time, cute rompers are hard to beat! I have a few that

I have been interested in fashion my entire life! I played dress up as a child and have never stopped! What makes Shabby Chic Boutique stand out?

What makes us stand out is the way our merchandise is displayed. We have outfits displayed all over the store, not one outfit is complete without a piece of jewelry to accessorize it! Our customers usually shop from our displays and our staff are expert at putting together outfits and helping customers one on one! Who would be your fashion role model/Icon?

Honestly, I don’t have one role model! I just love everyone from Audrey Hepburn to The Junk Gypsies, I LOVE it all!

What’s your career or educational background in the fashion industry?

What inspires you to keep up with the current fashion trends?

I went to college and studied Fashion Merchandising and was lucky enough to work as a Buyer, manager & merchandiser for a very successful boutique owner in the Chicagoland area. I worked at this company for 15 years and learned everything about the retail business.

I’m inspired everyday by just the sheer excitement and love I have for fashion! I’m constantly searching social media and designing in my head. I can spend hours combing through magazines & scrolling through social media! I’m a Pinterest and Instagram junkie!

What are some major setbacks that you’ve had in this particular business, that you had to overcome?

From an aspiring boutique owner’s perspective, what are some challenges you’ve had along the way?

I opened my boutique in 2011 with very little experience in social media or computers programs, so I had to teach myself with the help of my son & younger sister. It was a challenge, but now I’ve really got the hang of advertising & promoting my business on Facebook & just recently added an Instagram account.

It’s always a challenge to stay unique & to stay true to your look! It’s also challenging to find time for yourself, if you want to be successful, you must oversee every detail, you oversee everything!! My biggest challenge, the business side, I would much rather just dress up & be on the floor helping customers & playing with displays!

How long have you been a business owner?

What are your beauty secrets?

I’ve had my shop for 6 years.

My beauty secret is a good skincare routine & a good night’s rest! I also treat myself to regular manicures & pedicures since I’m on my feet 24/7.

CONNECTING TO LEAD Jackie Martin – A Matter of Motivation, LLC

Jackie is the founder and Chief Motivational Officer of A Matter of Motivation LLC. For more than 20 years Jackie has provided speaking and training on engagement, communication, leadership and change to small and large organizations both nationally and internationally. Jackie loves helping team members at all levels have major “ah-ha” moments and has designed and facilitated training for thousands in industries from banking, to medical, to engineering, to non-profit.

My first job out of college was with a Savings & Loan (I just dated myself), the by-gone dinosaurs of the financial world. The C-Suite on the top floor was filled with suits and ties, while everyone else wore navy and burgundy polyester uniforms (now I am really dating myself). The strongest, most feared leaders followed the old code of leadership by power and position. Swagger, bravado, or strength are all labels that accompanied that authoritarian leadership style. Many of today’s leaders (including myself) were weaned on that type of leadership and now struggle to find good role models to emulate. Transitioning to a more effective leadership style can be daunting, so training and coaching can become vital tools. Even Steve Jobs had a reputation of being tough and 20

dictatorial with his subordinates at times. Even though we know that disconnected, authoritarian leadership doesn’t work anymore, it’s hard to find what does work and how to make the changes needed. Today the best leaders use the Law of Connection. Author, speaker, and leadership guru, John Maxwell, wrote one of the leading resources on leadership, “The 21 Laws of Leadership.” Among other critical leadership laws, like the Law of the Lid and the Law of Magnetism, the Law of Connection focuses on the relationship between leaders and those they lead. Zig Ziglar said, “They don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” But how much do you need to care, and how do you show that without losing your credibility as a leader? According to Maxwell, the stronger the relationship and connection between individuals, the more likely the follower will want to help the leader. “You develop credibility with people when you connect with them and show that you genuinely care and want to help them,” says Maxwell. “And as a result, they usually respond in kind and want to help you.” Here are FOUR ways to build that connection: 1) Connect with Yourself – People are inevitably

drawn to leaders who have confidence in themselves and where they want to lead. Leaders don’t need to know everything, but they do need to have a vision and the energy to move people toward that vision. 2) Connect by Communicating – Be genuine and authentic with your communication, because people can smell a phony a mile away. Be real – warts and all. Why try to hide your faults from the people who know them all anyway? Since, in the absence of information, people always assume the worst, good leaders communicate clearly and often – even when the news is bad. “More is more” when it comes to open communication. 3) Connect to Your Belief in Them – Sincerely believe in your team. If you can’t truly believe in the individuals on your team, then you might have the wrong players on the bus. Communicate to them how valuable they are and how much you believe in them! You might see things in them that they don’t currently see in themselves, and your belief in them can build a connection and loyalty that can last a lifetime. 4) Connect to Offer Direction and Hope – “Leaders are dealers in hope,” said French General Napoleon Bonaparte. Leadership also denotes movement. People are following you because you

are going somewhere they want to go. Provide them the vision, the hope, and the steps toward the future they desire. One other law to remember as you build connections is the Law of Process. Building the trust and confidence we seek in a relationship takes time – it’s a process. It might start as easily as a conversation about family, sports, or school alma maters. By simply spending time with those on your team, you can build personal rapport, paving the way for a deeper connection. Research shows the number one reason why people leave an organization is the relationship with their boss, and the number one reason why they stay is the relationship with their boss! The power of the leader today is in the relationship, not the title. The time, effort, and focused energy spent connecting with those you lead makes all the difference in your own success. “Don’t ever underestimate the importance of building relational bridges between yourself and the people you lead,” instructs Maxwell. “There’s an old saying: To lead yourself, use your head; to lead others, use your heart. That’s the nature of the Law of Connection. Always touch a person’s heart before you ask him for a hand.”

The William K. Busch Brewing Co. is proving to be a bright, new chapter in the Busch family’s 150-year brewing history. Chief executive officer Billy Busch, the greatgrandson of AnheuserBusch founder Adolphus Busch, launched his brewery company shortly after InBev’s acquisition of Anheuser-Busch in 2008, introducing signature American lagers Kräftig Lager and Kräftig Light.

The Kräftig brands are brewed in accordance with Reinheitsgebot, the German purity law dating back to 1516, which mandates that beer can only contain water, malt, hops and yeast. “We’re one of the only products in our category using Reinheitsgebot,” says Marc Gottfried, the brewing company’s vice president of brewing. “The big difference is our competition uses anything from corn, corn syrup, rice, foam enhancers, preservatives or color.” These additives make the beer easier and less expensive to brew, but they also strip it of authenticity and flavor.

In contrast, Kräftig is made with only imported Hallertau hops, two- and six-row North American barley, a proprietary yeast and water from one of the purest sources in the country. “You get a more pure beer flavor [with Kräftig brands], and more of it, too,” says Gottfried, a 20-year brewing veteran who served as the head brewmaster at Morgan Street Brewery before joining the William K. Busch Brewing Co. “Where other beers are more carbonated water with beer character, we have a much more assertive beer character – it’s really clean and pleasant, but not cloying or overly bitter.”

Compared to other domestic beers, Kräftig Lager and Light give its drinkers a well-balanced lager with more hop aroma, malty notes and flavor. The brewery has found that their popularity has grown not only with mainstream beer drinkers but also with craft-beer aficionados. “That wasn’t our expectation,” Gottfried says. “We envisioned being a beer for people who typically enjoy domestic lagers, but we also have a growing number of customers who are devout craftbeer drinkers. Graphic Design...it’s what I do, it’s what I love. I love all aspects of design. I love to tackle the challenge of coming up with the best design concept to get your message across. I love finding the right font, the right colors, and the right layout. I graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a degree in Graphic Design in 2009. As a wife of 17 years at the time and a mother to two kids who were in the 3rd and 5th grade at the time, it was a great accomplishment to finish college and be an example to my kids to follow your dreams and do what you love. Fast forward to now. I am celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary this year, my daughter is a sophmore in college and my son is a senior in high school. Emily Derevencha and Matthew Palikij of Springfield, Missouri had their first date at a coffee shop in downtown Springfield called Coffee Ethic. Emily said, “the date itself was a train wreck and at one point she told Matthew he could leave at any moment and she wouldn’t be upset!” To which he leaned in and kissed Emily. The rest was history! They sat in the coffee shop for hours and hours. From that day on they were inseparable. The couple had been in Chicago visiting Matthew’s family on the week of their anniversary. On the night of their anniversary Matthew took Emily out to a romantic dinner at an Italian restaurant, had a bouquet of roses waiting at the table, and at the end of their meal Matthew stood Emily up, got down on one knee and proposed! Matthew’s sister had planned a surprise engagement party for the newly engaged couple when they returned home! On October 15, 2016, the happy couple tied the knot at the beautiful all-inclusive outdoor venue Enchanted Hills Weddings & Events. Emily’s favorite part of their wedding day, was when they played their song (Come to Me by The Goo Goo Dolls) as their Bridal party entered the ceremony,

Emily could hear it playing, eagerly anticipating and knowing her groom was waiting for her. She remembers his face as she walked down the aisle to him. Emily said, “It was worth more than all the money in the world.” The couple enjoyed an amazing stay-cation uninterrupted by work and reality! Emily said, “from the beginning of our relationship I felt as if my heart had known Matt my whole life. We are soulmates, and everyday being married to him is a dream come true. There’s a lot of pressure when being the host of a party. You want to impress your guests and make sure everyone is happy. With so many details to plan, one thing that doesn’t have to be stressful is the booze! I’ve been the Private Events Director with Les Bourgeois for 7 years and there is definitely a pattern. When providing alcohol for an event, an average group will consume a drink per hour. Typically, it is evenly split between beer & wine. However, I always need to stress words like “average”, “patterns” and “typically” because everybody is different. Things that can sway you from the norm would be providing transportation, time of day, and the nature of the event. Most of my clients just provide beer/ wine. Cocktails are always well received but not necessary for a successful party (especially if you’re on a budget). For beer, something lighter, such as Bud Light, is generally the biggest crowd pleaser. For those that want a craft beer, a pale ale or wheat is the way to

go as the heavier varieties like IPAs, Porters, Stouts, etc. won’t have the widest appeal. With the wine, I always recommend a variety of 4-6 (2 sweet, 2 semi dry, and 2 dry with a red/white in each category). The most popular combination from Les Bourgeois’ selection would be: Riverboat Red (sweet red), Riverboat White (sweet white), Pink Fox (sweet but not too sweet blush), Vignoles (semi-sweet white), Solay (dry white), and Norton (full-bodied dry red). If you only wanted two options, Vignoles & Norton are the way to go. Let’s say you are hosting a wedding reception on a Saturday evening for 100 guests with the bar open from 6:3010:30 pm. You want to provide beer/wine but aren’t too sure what everybody likes. I would recommend the following: 1 case of Riverboat Red,1 case of Vignoles, 1 case of Solay, 1 case of Norton, a full keg of Bud Light & a pony keg of Broadway Brewery’s Organic Honey Wheat. There are about 50 glasses of wine in a case, 160 12oz servings in a full keg, and 80 12oz servings in a pony keg. If you are providing a shuttle

Party service and plan on “kicking it up” then I would add 1 case of Pink Fox and bump the pony keg up to a full. By following these simple guidelines you will be sure to throw the party of a lifetime! Just remember, don’t sweat the small stuff and have fun. After all, it is a celebration!

SAFE BOATING TIPS

No matter how much experience you have, it’s always a good idea for everyone to review boating safety rules before departures. Basic boating safety tips to help you stay safe: Be Weather-Wise Always check local weather conditions before departure; TV and radio forecasts can be a good source of information. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.

Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist Proper boating safety includes being prepared for any possibility on the water. Following a pre-departure checklist is the best way to make sure no boating safety rules or precautions have been overlooked or forgotten.

Use Common Sense One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times (especially in crowded areas), staying alert at all times and steering clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop or turn. Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, all of

which have been placed there to ensure your own safety.

Designate an Assistant Skipper Make sure more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. If the primary navigator is injured or incapacitated in any way, it’s important to make sure someone else can follow the proper boating safety rules to get everyone else back to shore.

Develop a Float Plan Whether you choose to inform a family member or staff at your local marina, always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone. A float plan can include the following information: name, address, and phone number of trip leader name and phone number of all passengers boat type and registration information trip itinerary

Learn to Swim If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety includes knowing how to swim. Local organizations, such as the American Red Cross and others, offer training for all ages and abilities. Check to see what classes are offered in your area.

Take a Boating Course Beginning boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. Boater education requirements vary by state; however, some require validated completion of at least one boating safety course. Regardless of your individual state’s requirements, it’s always important to be educated and prepared for every circumstance that might arise. You can learn boating safety rules by taking a local community course or online course to help educate yourself.

Consider a Free Vessel Safety Check Take advantage of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations. They also offer virtual online safety checks as well.

Make Proper Use of Lifejackets Did you know that the majority of drowning victims are the result of boaters not wearing their lifejackets? Make sure that your family and friends aren’t part of this statistic by assigning and fitting each member of your onboard team with a life jacket prior to departure. Wear it!

Dijon mustard kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper In a large bowl, add chopped romaine. Top with shrimp, avocado, tomatoes, and red onion. Whisk together olive oil, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, Dijon, salt, and pepper. Pour dressing over salad and toss.

Chicken Tacos with Strawberry Salsa 1Âź lb. skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves 1 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. canola oil 12 fajita-size flour tortillas Olive oil cooking spray 8 oz. strawberries 2 medium tomatoes 1 medium avocado 1 small shallot 2 limes Â˝ c. crumbled feta cheese 2 c. Cilantro leaves

Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling on medium. Rub chicken with chili powder, oil, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Grill chicken, covered, 12 to 15 minutes or until cooked through (165 degrees F), turning over once halfway through. Transfer cooked chicken to cutting board. Let stand 5 minutes. Meanwhile, spray tortillas with cooking spray. Grill 1 to 2 minutes or until grill marks appear, turning over once halfway through. Transfer to plate. While chicken rests, in medium bowl, stir together strawberries, tomatoes, avocado, shallot, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Squeeze juice of half of 1 lime into mixture, stirring to combine. Thinly slice chicken and serve in tortillas topped with strawberry salsa, feta, and cilantro. Garnish with remaining limes, cut into wedges. |

In a small bowl, muddle blackberries. Set aside. Place mint leaves in bottom of glasses. Divide and spoon blackberry mixture on top. Add rum, sugar, and lime juice and stir to combine. Top with crushed ice. Add club soda and garnish with mint leaves and more blackberries.

WHEATLAND, Missouri - One of the biggest weeks of the year for dirt-track racing has arrived and it’s a special Silver Anniversary edition rolling into Lucas Oil Speedway, Thursday-through-Saturday.

“We were better. We’ll see how things shape up when you add the competition level of those Lucas guys,” Stovall said of this week. “But yeah, we’re definitely better.”

The 2017 Show-Me 100 Presented by ProtecttheHarvest.com marks the 25th renewal of the crown-jewel event which began in 1993 at West Plains Motor Speedway. The event is co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Lucas Oil MLRA.

Springfield’s Terry Phillips is the only Missouri driver to ever win the Show-Me, taking home honors in 1999.

“This is something that dirt-racing fans circle on their calendars months in advance. There’s nothing quite like Show-Me 100 week and we’re ready for three big nights of racing,” Lucas Oil Speedway General Manager Dan Robinson said. “Campers started to roll in last week and there’s a definite buzz in the air.” Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:35 each night. Full programs are scheduled three straight nights, culminating with Saturday’s 100-lap, $30,000-towin 100-lap feature. Jimmy Owens earned his fourth Show-Me 100 victory a year ago in a classic battle that saw Owens, runner-up Scott Bloomquist and young phenom Bobby Pierce engage in a memorable late-race duel. Tire issues relegated Pierce to a final sixth-place finish. Meanwhile, Jesse Stovall of Billings earned a podium finish for the Ozarks by coming home in third. It marked the third straight year that Stovall finished in the top 10 of the Show-Me 100. “When you’ve ran good a few times at an event like this, you have a little more confidence,” Stovall said. “That racetrack’s always been good to me. It actually used to be one of my worst tracks, but I finally went up there and raced weekly in my Modified until I figured out how to get around the place.” Stovall said he’s yet to really hit a good stride this season, but thinks he hit on something in a Saturday MARS Dirt-Car Series win at Longdale, Okla. Jackson was second in that race with Randy Timms, Stovall’s teammate, in third.

Bloomquist, of Mooresburg, Tenn., is chasing a repeat Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship. Entering Tuesday’s Go 50 at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., Bloomquist already has four series wins in 2017 and leads Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., by 125 points. On the Lucas Oil MLRA scene, Lebanon’s Tony Jackson Jr., has an early season six-point advantage over Rodney Sanders with Stovall 20 points behind Jackson. Here’s a rundown of the three upcoming race days at Lucas Oil Speedway: thursday: The “Cowboy Classic Presented by Hotrod Processing” headlines opening night, with the $6,000-towin feature honoring the late MLRA owner/promoter Allen “Cowboy” Chancellor. A full program for the Late Models and Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds is scheduled. friday: The “Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson” honoring the long-time West Plains Motor Speedway owners who started the Show-Me 100 also will pay $6,000 to win.
