The Blues Play Loud in Streets of St. Louis by Aaron J. Bass All eyes are on Mike Yeo this season as in his 32 games coached last season he went 22-82 and led the Blues to the second round of the conference playoffs. A Lot of fans were not happy about the dismissal of long time leading man Ken Hitchcock, but Yeo turned those jeers into cheers. However, this season is a new one as this will be Yeo’s first training camp as The Blues skipper. Along with Yeo the Blues have completely overhauled their coaching staff as at the end of last season GM Doug Armstrong made the call to bring in Craig Berube, Steve Ott, Darryl Sydor, David Alexander, Daniel Tkaczuk, and Barret Jackman in an effort to revamp the club behind the bench. Along with massive coaching changes St. Louis also made noise at the NHL Draft. The racket came to form as on draft night The Blues traded away pricey defensive center Jori Lehtera to Philly for the young dynamic Brayden Schenn. Followed but the parting with loveable tough guy Ryan Reaves in order to grab Russian prospect Klim Kostin in the first round. The addition of Kostin seems to be in hope of him being the replacement for winger David Perron. Perron was lost to the Vegas Golden October 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

where he was only able to produce 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists), however expect his production to go up as he joins a Blues attack with much playmaking ability. Leading the attack is alternate captain and All-Star Vladimir Tarasenko. Tarasenko has been the main catalyst of the St. Louis attack as for the past three years he has led The Blues in points (goals + assists). The 25-year-old Russian winger is looking to make his 4th straight All-Star appearance and also hopes to be able to finally hold the much elusive Stanley Cup. Along with Tarasenko are fellow attackers Jaden Schwartz and Alexander Steen. Steen is one of Knights in the expansion draft, Perron appeared in the four 33-year old’s on the roster but he been with all 82 games where he tallied 46 points (18 goals, The Blues for over 8 years now making him the most 28 assists). Kostin however is only 18 and has never experienced player on this Blues roster. played for a team outside of Russia, so expect 25-yearOne of the biggest question marks going into this old Beau Bennett to make the transition. season is without a doubt goalkeeper Jake Allen. In The Blues picked up Bennett in free agency as his his first season as the No.1 it seems the pressure got to former team the New Jersey Devils did not make him as when it came down to it he had to be bench so him a qualifying offer. Bennett appeared in 65 games he could collect his composure. Allen however came full circle though as when the playoffs came around 12

|

Missouri Magazine | October 2017

Allen was ready go as he looked like a new man as he only gave up 1.96 goals throughout the playoffs he also boasted a .935 save percentage. However, his season Allen is going to have to go without star defender Kevin Shattenkirk who was traded last year. But if Jake the Snake can play the way he did in April the loss of Shattenkirk may not be as big as expected. Along with the question of Allen fans want to find out whether or not 30+ year old’s Stastny, Alexander Steen, Vladimir Sobotka, Kyle Brodziak, Chris Thorburn, Jay Bouwmeester, Carl Gunnarsson can give Father Time a stiff-arm or will The Blues have to dig into the minors and scoop up Kostin, Jordan Kyrou, Tage Thompson, or Jordan Schmaltz to pick up the slack. The Blues have shown throughout the years they can compete with and against the best the Central conference has to offer. With Nashville showing that any team can make the Cup it gives St. Louis hope that one day and maybe this season we can have a parade of our own. October 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

Fall by Jazmin Decker

DIY

Say goodbye to summer and spring into fall with some super easy DIY DĂŠcor ideas for the interior and exterior areas of your home! Add a few unique Autumn touches this fall with a couple of these cheap and simple DIY designs.

16

|

Missouri Magazine | October 2017

Fall Succulent Planters: “For a super simple, easy fall decor, grab a pumpkin container and make some adorable fall succulent planters!” What you will need: • a pumpkin shaped container and/or a Styrofoam core pumpkin • a large knife to cut through the pumpkins • potting soil • varied small succulents

First, draw a circle the size of your desired opening and use a large knife to cut a circle at an inward angle. Take out the cutout section and dig out any extra bits of Styrofoam with your hands to make a bowl-shaped hole. Line the hole with plastic before you pour your soil in. Pour the desired amount of soil into the pot and choose which succulents you would like to plant in each container. Try pairing different styles and shapes of plants together to create diversity between the pumpkin containers. Once you have planted everything, trim the excess plastic from the edge of your plantings and enjoy your beautiful creations!

Leaf Bowl

What you will need: • a plastic bowl • artificial leaves • a sponge brush • a jar of mod podge • plastic wrap

This craft is very unique, creative, and very easy to recreate! The first step to this craft is to cover the bowl you would like to use in plastic wrap. After the bowl is wrapped, paint Mod Podge onto a leaf, and press the leaf onto the bowl. Repeat with various leaves, overlapping the leaves as you go. Continue doing this process until the base is covered and half the sides of the bowl are covered with leaves. To hold the leaves in place while the Mod Podge set, cover the wet leaves with more plastic wrap. Press on the plastic wrap to smooth out the leaves and help them stick together. After that, place the covered leaves in the sun for about 4 hours, then carefully removed the outer layer of plastic wrap and let the leaves dry completely. When the mod podge is dry, carefully take the leaves and plastic wrap off the bowl. Carefully peel back the plastic wrap from the inside of the leaf bowl. This gorgeous DIY design makes the perfect addition to a side table or coffee table this fall season. October 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

Bourbon Bottle Pumpkins & Gourds: What you will need: • white spray paint primer • colored acrylic paints of your choice • cheap craft paint brushes of various sizes • your gourd and pumpkin shaped bottles • any decorations you would like to put on your bottle (leaves, string, etc.) To start off, it is smart to first spray the bottles with white primer once the labels are removed to make it easier to paint the bottles later. Once the primer is dry, it is time to paint the bottles with the various oranges and yellows that you chose. If you’re attempting to make the bottles look more realistic with the color choices, then try to mix the different colors together and create variations of color throughout the bottles. From the middle of the neck of the bottle all the way to the top, take a dark green or a dark brown and paint it one solid color so that none of the orange color is showing through. To finish up the bottle gourds, wind jute twine around the dark green neck, using a hot glue gun to hold it in place so that it doesn’t move around. While wrapping the twine, try gluing in a few vine-like leaves (ones that can be found at Michaels) in order to make the bottles look like real pumpkins and gourds. Once you finish wrapping the twine, then you’re done! Your pumpkin is finished and you can use them to decorate around your home for any of your Autumn DIY needs.

Fall Leaf Mason Jar Candle Holder Start off this craft by taking your clean What you will need: mason jar and applying the mod podge • a mason jar to the outside of the jar, making sure to cover every inch of the jar with a decent • leaves (can be real or fake) amount of mod podge. Right after • a sponge brush applying the mod podge, take the leaves • a jar of mod podge of your choice and start pushing them onto the outside of the jar making sure they stick to the adhesive. After the entire jar is covered with your desired amount of leaves, take more of the mod podge and apply it to the top of the leaves, causing the leaves to have a top coat of adhesive so that they don’t end up falling off. Once the jar is dry, take any other desired decorations and apply them to the outside of the jar. Once you are finished decorating the outside of the jar, grab the candle and stick it inside the jar. Light up the candle and you now have a beautifully unique candle holder for the upcoming Autumn days! 18

Rashelle Weissenbach is a contemporary abstractionist painter known for her expressive use of color and textural approach to her mixed media paintings. www.rashelleweissenbach.com 26

Missouri Magazine | October 2017

Layers of suggested imagery create depth and tension within her compositions enticing the viewer to reflect on their own psyche. While imagery might appear free-spirited or random, Weissenbach’s paintings are always a visual allegory which entice the viewer to consider a larger message; love, loss, change, aging, growth and human relationships. Her use of color and tonality within abstract elements intentionally suggests the conflict or adaptation between personal relationships and the changing dynamic of

individual personalities when confronted with uncontrolled cultural and societal issues. Speaking visually through metaphor, she addresses her canvas with the sincerity and authenticity that one might approach a personal journal or a letter to friend. The canvas serves as an emotional outlet, pure catharsis, where she can therapeutically purge and visually record feelings and reactions to both observed situations and experiences.

Meet the Brewmaster: Marc Gottfried Marc Gottfried drinks Kräftig on the job. And he’s paid for it, too. It’s one of the perks of being a brewmaster. But there’s a whole lot more to the job than just drinking lager. From helping create the Kräftig recipes to overseeing the entire brewing process, Marc is a man committed to quality. Meet the guy who spends most of his waking life surrounded by beer: Brewmaster Marc Gottfried.

What drew you to the beer industry? While I really don’t know for sure since I was so young, I usually attribute it to the immense presence of the beer industry in St. Louis. I lived in Connecticut until I was 12 and we didn’t have any one industry that the region wore like a badge of honor. Curious, I went on several brewery tours with my mom and I eventually started homebrewing at the age of 14. Keep in mind my mom was a nationally-respected microbiologist and textbook author, so she humored my new hobby for its scientific value. My interest piqued after a meeting she set up for me with now retired brewmaster, Phil Columbatto, who offered encouragement and advice. We are still good friends today.

to be very challenging. The process isn’t like making lemonade where you can just double or triple a recipe by adding more ingredients. There are countless variables to take into account when trying to make a beer in a brewery other than the one it was developed in. We piloted Kräftig and Kräftig Light in a small format, and when we realized we had a winner, I had to blow it up for production. What do you find most rewarding about being a brewmaster? This is a pretty big dork answer, but the finetuning of a recipe to maintain consistency. You hear slogans like “The same recipe since 1901…” but that’s never true. I like to say that we never brew the

same recipe twice in an attempt to make the same beer every time. As brewers, we are dealing with crops and their ever-changing characteristics. The brewer must pay attention to the analyses of these crops and alter the recipe so that they have the same effect on the finished product. What inspires you? Witnessing a consumer buying our beer. A legitimate sale without influence from my being there or having talked to them first tells me that we are doing something right. That person decided to give up some of their hard-earned money in exchange for something we made. It inspires me to maintain our level of quality so that we do not let that person down.

What has been the biggest challenge working as a brewmaster? When I transitioned from being a craft brewer using a 15bbl. manual brewhouse to a premium lager brewer using a 1440bbl. fullyautomated brewhouse, it was and continues

What’s the craziest beer you’ve ever tried? A very long time ago, there was a homebrewing competition where the goal was to make the most disgusting looking beer that tasted fantastic. This one guy made a jet-black beer with squid that he had cooked to the point of being flavorless. The white squid tentacles in the black beer were a gross contrast, yet the beer was quite good – a schwartzbier, I think. If you could have a beer with anyone who ever lived, who would it be and why? My mom. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for her vision on an obviously sensitive subject given the age I was when I started. Brain cancer took her quickly, and while she got to see some of the fruits of her labor, it would be nice to share a Kräftig Light with her… or two. Being a brewmaster ain’t easy, but Marc Gottfried does a great job of making it look that way. Kräftig wouldn’t be the same without him. Prost to you, Marc!

Fall Fashion Trends by Jazmin Decker

The leaves are starting to change and so are your wardrobe choices! Here are a few of the biggest trends seen in stores and on the runway this season. Get some of the best tips and find out which colors and styles work best for the fall and how to pair them with the perfect accessories for both men and women!

32

|

Missouri Magazine | October 2017

TRENDS FOR MEN Graphic Knitwear: This past summer we saw the return of the graphic tees and this fall is the beginning of the graphic knitwear trend. Since it’s about to be a little too chilly to wear a t-shirt alone, try wearing a sweater with one of your favorite characters or statements on it. Look fresh and stay warm throughout these next few brisk months.

Quilted Jackets: Quilted jackets are going to be in this fall and can be found in many different versions. Quilted bombers and quilted blazers are a go-to for a high fashion look this fall season. Stay warm and look fresh with a jacket that is amazing for the chillier days. Match this style of jacket with a pair of skinny jeans and a graphic tee to create the perfect outfit.

Chukka Boots: These ankle-high leather or suede boots are the perfect accessory to pair with any fall outfit. If you are looking for shoes that are fancier than a simple pair of gym shoes, try a pair of Chukka boots! Rock this trend throughout the fall as you visit a few pumpkin patches and enjoy the fall weather.

October 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

33

Beanies: Although beanies are popular every season of the year, they tend to be more prominent in the fall and winter seasons. Wool beanies are super stylish when paired with a pair of leggings or skinny jeans and an oversized sweater. Whether you wear your hair down, in a braid, or any other possible way, pairing a beanie with it will improve your fall outfit 100%. Sport a neutral colored beanie and rock your outfit one day at a time!

Blanket Scarves: The bigger the scarf the better this fall when it comes to pairing scarves as an accessory to your outfits. Instead of wearing a thin infinity scarf, try wearing a thicker blanket scarf that is going to keep you both fashionable and warm all throughout the fall and winter. Find a blanket scarf with a pattern so you can easily pair it with a plain white or black t-shirt in order to create an easy and simple fall outfit.

Fleece Pullovers: When searching for a way to stay warm, fleece pullovers are one of the biggest jacket trends this season! Although these jackets are made out of a very thick material, sometimes it is necessary in order to fight through the very chilly fall nights. Popular companies that create fleece pullovers are Patagonia, North Face, L.L Bean, True Grit, and Columbia. If you’re interested in looking good and feeling good this fall, I definitely recommend wearing a fleece pullover, you won’t regret it! 34

|

Missouri Magazine | October 2017

Flannel Shirts: Flannel Shirts have been one of the biggest fall trends for both men and women for years and this season it is bigger than ever! Instead of wearing a tighter fitting flannel that is made for women, try wearing a looser fit flannel made for men. The looser fit flannels look perfect when paired with leggings and a tight fitting tank top or t-shirt.

TRENDS FOR WOMEN

Sweater Dress: For a dressier fall look, try pairing a warm sweater dress with a flannel shirt and a pair of boots. This look gives you a sense of professionalism while also looking a lot more laid back than an actual dressier style garment. Sweater dresses provide the perfect mix of comfort and cozy-knit for any chilly fall night. Another way to style this type of dress is by pairing it with a larger blanket scarf or a long, floor length cardigan. No matter how you choose to style a sweater dress, you can ultimately never go wrong!

Booties: Instead of the usual pair of knee-high boots, try pairing your fall outfits with a pair of ankle-high booties! Booties are a popular fall trend this year and come in many different styles, colors, and heights. Whether your booties are brown, black, flat, healed, zippered, or button-up, find the perfect booties to complement your beautiful fall wardrobe and rock the town as confident as you can be! Tina Newton Photography I have been shooting weddings since 2011. I am a hopeless romantic and I cry at every single wedding! Call me a baby, but there is just something about the excitement of a wedding day and the beginning of someone’s forever. At my grandmother’s funeral her wedding album sat out and I just remember thinking to myself how the photographer caught their personality so perfectly. That is true beauty and that is what I strive for at every wedding. It’s when you can look back at those photos that are so old of family members and see the beauty of who that person was, as almost looking into their soul.

Phil and Kelly knew early in the relationship they were meant for each other and would one day get married and spend the rest of their lives together. Kelly said, “This was no secret to anyone around us either, everyone knew the special love we had for one another.”

Phil planned a special dinner and then took Kelly to the plaza following dinner to enjoy the beautiful weather. They went for a stroll along brush creek where he popped the question and then later had all of Kelly’s closest friends and family waiting to celebrate with us! Kelly said, “it was the best surprise ever!” The blissful couple tied the knot July 1, 2017. Megan Karst served as Maid of Honor; bridesmaids were Mallory Bahmani, Aubrey Bachand, Meggie McConnell-Lewis, Rachel Epperson. Phil Bolin was Best Man, and groomsmen were Kyle Copeland, Dennis Copeland, Josh Kreiling, James Bachand. Gibson Lewis & Aurora McCahon were the precious flowers girls and Gabe Bolin was the ring bearer.

oted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris joined by former Presidents and hundreds of North America’s conservation leaders unveiled the all-new Wonders of Wildlife National Museum Aquarium, located in the center of America’s heartland in Springfield, Missouri. Nearly ten years in the making and unprecedented in scale and scope, Wonders of Wildlife is larger than the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and an inspirational tribute to the adventurers, explorers, outdoorsmen and conservationists who helped discover, develop and preserve the nation we love. With 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds, the 350,000-square-foot complex is a wonder in and of itself. It contains more than 1.5 miles of trails through authentic, immersive habitats and

features 1.5 million gallons of freshwater and saltwater aquariums and immersive wildlife galleries. Signature galleries include a massive “open ocean” ring-shaped aquarium and the two-story Shipwreck Room where guests can touch stingrays on the ocean floor. Immersive wildlife galleries feature 4D dioramas that transport guests through sights, sounds, smells and climates to some of the wildest places on earth, including a trek across the African savannah, the Amazon rainforest, the Arctic and America’s National Parks and more in a multisensory celebration of conservation and craftsmanship. The all-new museum and aquarium is located next to Bass Pro Shops National Headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, one of many signature naturebased attractions in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, a region emerging as America’s Conservation Capital. The visionary behind the project is noted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, sometimes referred to as “the Walt Disney of the Outdoors” for his knack for creating amazing experiences that connect people with nature. Morris, who grew up fishing with his family on Missouri’s White River before founding Bass Pro Shops in 1971 with eight square feet of space in the back of his father’s liquor store, created the not-forprofit Wonders of Wildlife as a gift to the nation intended to inspire people of all ages to engage with the natural world.

hunters and anglers as America’s true conservation heroes,” said Johnny Morris. “We proudly invite families and sportsmen to come share the wonder with an unforgettable experience meant to inspire generations of future conservationists.”

A world class aquarium adventure At the heart of the Wonders of Wildlife experience is a worldclass aquarium adventure, home to massive aquatic habitats teeming with life. There has never been an aquarium as immersive, interactive or engaging as this. Guests of all ages can immerse themselves inside a river full of piranhas, discover what it’s like to touch a stingray, traverse an underwater tunnel surrounded by giant river monsters and come face-to-face with sharks, jellyfish, snakes, iguanas, eagles, owls and more.

“Wonders of Wildlife is an inspirational journey around the world that celebrates the role of

The experience begins with the breathtaking Great Oceans Hall, bringing the excitement of the ocean to the middle of America. Visitors will step inside a 300,000-gallon circular “open ocean” habitat, teeming with life, including zebra sharks, leopard rays and goliath grouper; look in awe at a mesmerizing living bait ball; and discover the Great Barrier Reef, a towering saltwater aquarium showcasing colorful reef fish, including Maori wrasse, potato cod and

more. Additional noted exhibits include Shipwreck Reef, which plunges guests to the depths of the ocean floor where they can touch stingrays and explore a sunken shipwreck now home to colorful reef. The aquarium also honors legendary anglers with boats from Earnest Hemingway, Zane Grey, personal fishing artifacts and mementos from Bait ball U.S. Presidents, and some of from below fishing’s most accomplished sportsmen and women at The International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) Fishing Hall of Fame and the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame. More fun surprises await around every corner as visitors traverse cypress swamps, tropical rainforests, Ozarks waterways, craggy caves and more. The aquarium’s unique design ensures visitors are constantly surprised and amazed by where they might end up next, and the creatures that await to be discovered around the bend.

Immersive wildlife galleries transport visitors around the world Visitors can pack their bags for adventure as stateof-the-art 4D dioramas completely surround them within the sights, sounds and smells of the planet’s

most extreme wildlife habitats. Each environment features meticulous attention to detail including massive hand-painted murals, native foliage and special effects that deliver the chill of the Arctic, the cold winds of the Alps, the dry sun of the African Savannah and more. Signature exhibits within the wildlife galleries include The Great African Hall, immersing guests in the African savannah with animals including elephants, giraffes, rhinos, crocodiles, zebra and more and Sheep Mountain, with more than 40 record-setting sheep from around the world. Visitors will relive conservation’s history with The Boone and Crockett Club’s National Collection of Heads and Horns. Founded by our nation’s leading conservation hero Theodore Roosevelt, the Club’s legendary exhibit gives visitors the chance to step back in time and see more than 40 historically significant North American game animals that helped spark America’s conservation movement when it debuted at New York’s Bronx Zoo in 1908. Guests will encounter World Record bears, bison, caribou, elk and other big game species while learning about these iconic animals and how science, sportsmen and regulated hunting saved them from exploitation and near extinction. One remarkable display is the famous Chadwick Ram from British Columbia taken in 1936 featuring 51-inch horns and considered to be the finest North American big game specimen ever collected. The influential collection relocated to Wonders of Wildlife from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming.

Wonders of Wildlife is now open daily except Christmas. For additional information including admission, hours of operation and directions visit www.wondersofwildlife.org.

INGREDIENTS 1 roasting chicken ¾ tsp. salt 3 medium apples 3 small onions 2 celery stalks 2 clove garlic 2 tbsp. fresh sage ¼ c. butter 1 tbsp. whole-grain mustard .13 tsp. Cracked white pepper 1 tsp. fresh thyme ¼ c. fruity white wine, such as Riesling ¾ c. fresh apple cider

Apple & Sage Roasted Chicken Preheat the oven to 375°F. Rub the inside of the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Chop 1 apple, 1 onion, and the celery into 2-inch pieces. Toss the apple mixture with the garlic and 1 tablespoon sage, and place it all in the chicken cavity. Tie the legs together with kitchen twine, and tuck the wings securely under. Mix the butter and mustard to a smooth paste and rub over the chicken skin and sprinkle with the remaining salt and white pepper. Place the bird in a medium roasting pan. Missouri Magazine | October 2017

Scatter the remaining apples and onions around the bird, tossing lightly to coat with the drippings. Add the white wine, and roast the chicken 20 minutes. Baste the bird, and toss the apples and onions again for even browning. Continue to roast until bird juices run clear and the meat between the leg and thigh reaches 160°F. Remove from the oven and transfer the chicken to a serving platter. Arrange the apples and onions around the chicken. Prepare the jus: Tip the roasting pan so the liquid pools to one end, and use a large spoon to remove any excess fat from the pan juices. Add apple cider and place the pan over medium-high heat. Use a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the pan, and then pour the jus over the chicken, apples, and onions. Serve warm.

Sam Haferepe Jr. worried that he had driven too hard and burned up his tires as the laps in Saturday night’s 7th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial dwindled. But there was a good reason the Lucas Oil ASCS Winged Sprint Series championship leader was pushing his car to the limit at Lucas Oil Speedway. “Normally I don’t drive like that, but this is the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial,” Hafertepe said. “It’s $10,000. This is a big race to win and it’s one that we hadn’t won that I really wanted to win.” Hafertepe held on to claim one of sprint-car racing’s crown jewel events before a big crowd, capturing his 14th Lucas Oil ASCS Tour feature win of the season.

paced the field until Hafertepe used the high groove to make a pass coming out of turn four to complete lap six. “We got the top (groove) rolling and just got right by him,” Hafertepe said. “I knew we were pretty good, to drive around Sammy. After that, I guess I drove a little bit too hard - but I guess you have to do that sometimes.”

A four-car pileup Sam Hafertepe Jr. on his way to the $10,000 victory in Saturday’s In the co-headliner, among lapped cars, Hockett/McMillin Memorial. (Kenny Shaw photo) Logan Seavey finished right in front of the off a sweep with his third win in as many nights in leaders in turns one and two, sent the race to a caution the POWRi Lucas Oil Wingless Auto Racing Series on lap 10. Hafertepe navigated his way through the feature. Seavey earned $2,077 with a wire-to-wire clutter and Swindell spun to a stop, trying to avoid triumph. hitting anyone. Hafertepe, of Sunnyvale, Texas, passed Sammy Swindell early in the 30-lap feature and denied the veteran a three-night sweep. Matt Covington wound up second with Jason Martin third. Swindell recovered from a spin that put him tailback to finish fourth. “This is the one that we haven’t been able to tie down,” Hafertepe said. “I thought we had the car to win last year and messed up. Sammy’s been really good and he’s a tough competitor. I knew he was going to bring everything he had and we got the best of him.” Starting from the pole, Swindell roared to the lead and

That forced Swindell to the rear for the restart and elevated Wayne Johnson to second and Covington in third. Hafertepe and Johnson broke away from the field, but Johnson and the lapped car of Thomas Kennedy tangled on lap 23 coming down the front straightaway. That ended Johnson’s chances to repeat his Hockett/ McMillin win from a year ago. One lap after the restart, fourth-running Giovanni Scelzi hit the wall in turn four to bring out a red flag. That left a six-lap shootout with Hafertepe leading October 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

Covington, Johnny Herrera, Jason Martin and Swindell. Hafertepe, nursing a right rear tire that he said was burned up, was up to the challenge. “I could barely stay on the race track the last two or three laps,” Hafertepe said. “I’m just lucky to come out here with a win.” Covington hung on for second with Martin joining the top two on the podium. “We had a really good run and a good car,” Covington said. “Sam’s been so fast all year. He just ran a perfect race. We ran a pretty good race and it’s good to get the runner-up position.”

a red flag came out on lap four when Katlynn Leer flipped in turn three. She climbed out of her car uninjured. Seavey opened a big lead after the restart and was ahead of Dustin Morgan and Mario Clouser - but battling lapped traffic - when another red flew on lap 22. A four-car wreck eliminated contenders Morgan and Boyles as R.J. Miller flipped in turn three. Miller was not injured, but he, Morgan and Boyles were done for the night. “I was a little worried once I got to them,” Seavey said of his battle with lapped traffic just before the red. “It was pretty sketchy there a couple of times. We were able to get through there right before that wreck and it worked out perfect for us. “Everything just went right for us this weekend.” Quinton Benson, Clouser, Chris Phillips and Andrew Deal lined up behind Seavey as the race resumed with eight laps to go. Seavey, with a clear track ahead of him, pulled away after the restart to prevail. Ninth-starting Quinton Benson finished second and Clouser wound up third. “Hats off to Logan; he was the class of the field all weekend,” Benson said.

Seavey cruises to WAR win: It was fitting that Logan Seavey, a 20-year-old from Sutter, Calif., led flagto-flag in the POWRi Lucas Oil War Series feature, considering he dominated all three days. Driving a car owned by Zach Daum, who is currently sidelined by an injury, Seavey said he didn’t have any idea he might be coming to the Hockett/McMillin Memorial until a few days before. “We race against Zach every week in the Midgets and it’s nice to be able to get here and run in his stuff and know it’s going to be good every time you hit the track,” Seavey said. Seavey outdueled Clinton Boyles for the lead at the conclusion of lap one and was setting the pace when
