Service with Heart Story by Jazmin Decker | Photos by Crystal French

This past Memorial Day Weekend, an opening for a new smartphone app that provides boat ride services was launched and has set sail in a positive direction. Anchor Charter Services is a pier-to-pier boat charter service that provides water transportation from one location on the lake to the next.

8

|

Missouri Magazine | June 2017

Zach Hatraf, the creator and CEO of Anchor Charter Services, stated that the company has already had about 1,200 app downloads, 600 trip requests, and has been able to fulfill around 50% of the total ride requests so far. The reason for only being able to fulfill around 50% of the requests is because about a week into the application launch, a tornado touched down and knocked down power lines, ultimately knocking out all the data service in the area. After moving past the tornado situation, they have had 100% good feedback and are constantly working towards improving the app. Anchor Charter Services launched the application with intention to learn from their mistakes and improve the app in order to create the safest and most convenient boating assistance as possible. The concept of this business originated around eleven years ago after a dear friend of Zach’s died during a drunk boating accident. He knew that something had to be done about the safety of those on and around the lake. Hatraf started “Who’s Your Captain, LLC.”, a company that provides boaters with a USCG licensed captain for hire for any boating experience that the customer needs. After about four and a half years, the company was sold and he started accumulating ideas for this new application. “The biggest problem with “Who’s Your Captain, LLC.” was the manual labor of contacting over the phone with customer service in order to hire a captain for your boat. The only way to expand the business was to hire in more people for the customer service aspect. Now that technology has so many new advances, it’s a lot easier to track where people are located, track the boats near the customers, and see where the overall need is for those around the area.”

“If you would like to get on the water, you just have to download the app for free, fill out your name and the basic information like where you need to be picked up from, what kind of boat you would like to be picked up by, and essentially how many people are needing to be picked up at the time, and then in five minutes you’re able to select a boat to pick you up. It’s that simple!” he stated. At the moment, the company is trying to alter the price of each ride to make it more favorable towards the bigger groups or those traveling a longer distance, but for right now the average one-way trip is around $150$180. Of course, the ride is cheaper per person when you have a larger group, but Anchor Charter Services tries to make the ride affordable and safe for those who are in need of service. The ultimate success of the business is attributed to the overall need in the marketplace. The options before Anchor Charter Services were prehistoric and they haven’t changed much over the past forty years besides the variety of the specific boats provided. There’s been a gap in the marketplace and there is a definite want and need for a new service. Anchor Charter currently has around seventy drivers and twenty of them have already made their boat payment for the

month. A plethora of the drivers have been able to make around $1,000 a day just by providing their services as a driver. Not all of the drivers have their own boats to provide as well. If the company comes in contact with a great boat operator, then they are able to pair these operators with a partner or a boat can be provided to them

charter experience for the entire day where the customer can customize their offerings and specify what their needs are for their trip. For example, if a customer is in need of a sunset cruise one day with on deck music and champagne, then Anchor Charter will find a driver for them who would be able to provide them with that specific service. Currently, Hatraf is attempting to search for additional investors and funders who are willing to assist with growing this company and providing a broader experience for the groups and individuals in need.

“The goal of this company is to impact the world and assist in making it a safer place one day at a time.”

with the boats they currently have available until that driver is able to save up money for their own boat. Over the next few years, Hatraf plans to expand the services so that a customer may be able to preplan a ride for the next two hours, two days, two weeks, or whatever it may be. He also plans to someday provide a traditional

At the end of the day,

the ultimate goal for Hatraf and his wife is to leave a legacy not only for his buddy Stuball who was killed in the accident, but also for his family and for anyone else who has been impacted by a drunk boating experience in one way or another. Anchor Charter Services plans on not only assisting in recreational fun and entertainment, but also improving the safety aspect of the lake as well. “ M o n e y,

to us, is only a biproduct of providing value and impact for the better of the world. Being an entrepreneur is not all glamour. It’s very difficult working 100+ hours a week, but I will stop at nothing to be successful because ultimately making $1 for yourself and overseeing your own company feels so much better than making $100 for someone else.”

“The goal of this company is to impact the world and assist in making it a safer place one day at a time. I’m excited to see where this company goes and we’ll hopefully be expanding our services to other lakes around the United States very soon.”

SAFE BOATING TIPS

No matter how much experience you have, it’s always a good idea for everyone to review boating safety rules before departures. Basic boating safety tips to help you stay safe: Be Weather-Wise Always check local weather conditions before departure; TV and radio forecasts can be a good source of information. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.

Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist Proper boating safety includes being prepared for any possibility on the water. Following a pre-departure checklist is the best way to make sure no boating safety rules or precautions have been overlooked or forgotten.

Use Common Sense One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times (especially in crowded areas), staying alert at all times and steering clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop or turn. Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, all of

which have been placed there to ensure your own safety.

Designate an Assistant Skipper Make sure more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. If the primary navigator is injured or incapacitated in any way, it’s important to make sure someone else can follow the proper boating safety rules to get everyone else back to shore.

Develop a Float Plan Whether you choose to inform a family member or staff at your local marina, always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone. A float plan can include the following information: name, address, and phone number of trip leader name and phone number of all passengers boat type and registration information trip itinerary

Learn to Swim If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety includes knowing how to swim. Local organizations, such as the American Red Cross and others, offer training for all ages and abilities. Check to see what classes are offered in your area.

18

|

Missouri Magazine | June 2017

Take a Boating Course Beginning boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. Boater education requirements vary by state; however, some require validated completion of at least one boating safety course. Regardless of your individual state’s requirements, it’s always important to be educated and prepared for every circumstance that might arise. You can learn boating safety rules by taking a local community course or online course to help educate yourself.

Consider a Free Vessel Safety Check Take advantage of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations. They also offer virtual online safety checks as well.

Make Proper Use of Lifejackets Did you know that the majority of drowning victims are the result of boaters not wearing their lifejackets? Make sure that your family and friends aren’t part of this statistic by assigning and fitting each member of your onboard team with a life jacket prior to departure. Wear it!

What leading designers do you offer your customers?

We sell Areve, Ryu, Élan, Surrealist, Comfy Usa, Dear John, Lysee, & Sorrelli Jewelry just to name a few of our lines. When did you become interested in fashion?

I have been interested in fashion my entire life! I played dress up as a child and have never stopped! What makes Shabby Chic Boutique stand out?

What makes us stand out is the way our merchandise is displayed. We have outfits displayed all over the store, not one outfit is complete without a piece of jewelry to accessorize it! Our customers usually shop from our displays and our staff are expert at putting together outfits and helping customers one on one! Who would be your fashion role model/Icon?

Honestly, I don’t have one role model! I just love everyone from Audrey Hepburn to The Junk Gypsies, I LOVE it all!

What’s your career or educational background in the fashion industry?

What inspires you to keep up with the current fashion trends?

I went to college and studied Fashion Merchandising and was lucky enough to work as a Buyer, manager & merchandiser for a very successful boutique owner in the Chicagoland area. I worked at this company for 15 years and learned everything about the retail business.

I’m inspired everyday by just the sheer excitement and love I have for fashion! I’m constantly searching social media and designing in my head. I can spend hours combing through magazines & scrolling through social media! I’m a Pinterest and Instagram junkie!

What are some major setbacks that you’ve had in this particular business, that you had to overcome?

From an aspiring boutique owner’s perspective, what are some challenges you’ve had along the way?

I opened my boutique in 2011 with very little experience in social media or computers programs, so I had to teach myself with the help of my son & younger sister. It was a challenge, but now I’ve really got the hang of advertising & promoting my business on Facebook & just recently added an Instagram account.

It’s always a challenge to stay unique & to stay true to your look! It’s also challenging to find time for yourself, if you want to be successful, you must oversee every detail, you oversee everything!! My biggest challenge, the business side, I would much rather just dress up & be on the floor helping customers & playing with displays!

How long have you been a business owner?

What are your beauty secrets?

I’ve had my shop for 6 years.

My beauty secret is a good skincare routine & a good night’s rest! I also treat myself to regular manicures & pedicures since I’m on my feet 24/7. |

The City Museum located in St. Louis is an incredible building that is difficult to describe if you haven’t been to experience it yourself. Contradictory to the name, it is not much like a museum at all but more like a 600,000 square foot fun-house attraction. Built in a former International Shoe Company, The City Museum is a giant children’s playground, funhouse, and architectural masterpiece allin-one. Whether you’re five or thirty-two, I guarantee there’s something here for everyone to enjoy. 760 N. 16th St. | St. Louis, MO. www.citymuseum.org

This Anheuser-Busch Brewery is the largest and oldest brewery site located in St. Louis alongside the Mississippi River. While taking the complementary tour, you get to observe the seven-step brewery process and visit the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales located in the historical stables. The complementary tour is offered year-round and is a refreshing way to escape the summer heat while also learning about the rich brewing heritage. 12th & Lynch St. | St. Louis, MO. www.budweisertours.com

The home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, is located on 206-208 Hill Street in Hannibal, Missouri and is the inspiration for many of his stories, including the renowned white picket fence. While wandering through some of his famous novels, children of all ages can ride a raft with Huck and Jim or explore a cave with Tom and Becky. Many of Twain’s memorabilia and personal artifacts are also displayed on site. Enjoy a Mark Twain performance or Music Under the Stars every Thursday night throughout the Summer.

This historical house in St. Louis was plagued by a series of suicides committed by family members involved in a successful brewing company back in the late 1800’s. The only remaining child of the family, Edwin Lemp, never moved back into the mansion after the series of events which allowed the Lemp Mansion to be made into a restaurant and inn by the Pointer family. The mansion now offers tours, both historical and haunted, murder mystery dinner theatre shows, and yearly Halloween parties.

Get Back to Summer with Kräftig Summer’s almost here, so break out your tank tops, flip flops, or whatever you wear when things get hot. Get outside and have some fun in the sun. While you’re out there, enjoy some nice liquid company. With its refreshing taste and sessionabilty, Kräftig is the perfect summer lager.

Missouri Magazine | June 2017

Here are six summertime activities for you to enjoy with Kräftig: Grilling – Since the dawn of grills, man has enjoyed beer. And it’s time for you to break out the propane tank or charcoal and grill some juicy burgers and brats in your backyard. What’s more American than burgers? Burgers and real American lager, that’s what. Picnicking – Get your hands on some tiny triangle sandwiches and one of those checkered blankets. Bring cornhole, washers, a flying disc, or your favorite game and spend some time enjoying the outdoors. Eat. Drink.

And be merry, enjoying the company of friends and Kräftig. Fishing – If the fish aren’t biting, fishing can be just about as exciting as watching paint dry. Bring a cooler full of Kräftig with you, though, and we promise you’ll have a great day no matter what you catch. There’s nothing quite like relaxing on the water with an ice cold real American Lager. Golfing – A game of golf can take a while, but sometimes that’s the best part. There’s plenty of downtime to drink and enjoy the weather. What’s better than taking a solid swing off the tee? Taking

a solid swig of Kräftig while on the green. It’s the perfect session beer for your golf session.

Camping – Grab your friends, pitch some tents, and go exploring. When night falls, tell scary stories around a fire. The ultimate horror story would be running out of Kräftig, though, so make sure you’re well-stocked.

Floating – Hop in a canoe and go floating down a river like Huckleberry Finn. Just sit back and relax with a nice, cold Kräftig in hand, letting the current carry away every care. If you start to capsize, save the beer first. You know you’ve gone too far when you hear the dueling banjos from Deliverance. It’s time to put your phone down, log off your laptop, and go outside. Get some Kräftig, get active, and let the good times roll all summer long.

Graphic Design...it’s what I do, it’s what I love. I love all aspects of design. I love to tackle the challenge of coming up with the best design concept to get your message across. I love finding the right font, the right colors, and the right layout. I graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a degree in Graphic Design in 2009. As a wife of 17 years at the time and a mother to two kids who were in the 3rd and 5th grade at the time, it was a great accomplishment to finish college and be an example to my kids to follow your dreams and do what you love. Fast forward to now. I am celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary this year, my daughter is a sophmore in college and my son is a senior in high school. When I was approached to help kick off this magazine I was really stoked. It’s exciting and refreshing to get to learn all the things about Missouri and see why every one LOVE’S Missouri so much!

Casie (Renyer) and Cade Post of Branson, Missouri met while working at Westgate. Casie was looking for a new job but decided to stick around long enough to get to know Cade better before switching jobs. Cade’s dad also worked with them and was on the sidelines trying to set the couple up. Soon the happy couple began to date and then started talking about an engagement. Casie’s sister gave the couple free tickets for the nature trail at Top of the Rocks. With the help of Casie’s sister, Cade started planning the proposal! Cade proposed while standing in front of one of the beautiful Top of the Rocks’ waterfalls. Cade had Casie’s sister ride on a golf cart far enough behind them so Casie couldn’t see her. With her sister in hiding waiting to capture the moment on camera, Casie said, YES! On November 26, 2016, the happy couple tied the knot at Brookside Church. Casie’s favorite part of their wedding day was when Cade said his vows to her. Another highlight for her was when Cade included Casie’s daughter in the vows by giving her a ring to show his commitment to the entire family. As of that day, Casie’s daughter calls Cade, Daddy! The couple enjoyed a beautiful honeymoon in Ireland.

TOP 10

HOT SUMMER FASHION by Jazmin Decker

1

No.

Florals are in full bloom this summer as the floral print is making a drastic comeback. Between blouses with ruffles or statement handbags, many are dressing headto-toe in floral print and looking brighter and better than ever while doing it!

52

|

Missouri Magazine | June 2017

This Summer the weather is hotter than ever and many are moving past the spring fashion trends and slipping into something more appropriate for the upcoming weather. Here are the top 10 Summer Fashion trends for 2017 to keep you feeling cool and looking fresh these next few months!

2

No.

Stripes made their appearance on the Spring/Summer 2017 runways in every single style you can imagine: some vertical, some horizontal, some thick lined, and some super skinny. Balance the lines out with a bodycon piece or a casual sneaker and you’re bound to have an amazing statement piece that is artfully different than the everyday usual.

3 No.

The 70’s are definitely back in this Summer as fringe made its way down the runway on both handbags and maxi skirts this season. This trim design adds an element of sophistication to any body shape, just be cautious when pairing it with other statement pieces. Try to pair the fringe with something modern or minimal so that the rodeo or cowboy vibe doesn’t make its way into play.

Metallic sneakers are now the secret weapon to making any jean and white t-shirt combo look up to date and stylish. A flashy pair of kicks are viewed more like jewelry this summer: they add an extra accent of flair and depth to any minimalistic outfit.

The statement tee this summer is the most unique trend in the sense that it is definitely the most versatile trend to come by. Whether you pair a statement tee with a normal pair of jeans or a velvet mini skirt, neither way is wrong and both ways are bound to impress. Invest in this trend and be confident in what you wear because looking good doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. |

FASHION Many trade shows this season were rich with pieces that were enhanced by embroidered details causing the pieces to look more whimsical than usual. Whether it be on a jean jacket or a maxi dress, this stitching technique is upgrading many pieces and improving the overall look of your everyday outfit. Bib tanks, more commonly known as high-neck tank tops, are making a fresh new comeback all the way from the 90’s. This very flattering trend is sweeping the nation this summer, providing women everywhere with a refreshing style of tank top that is both sophisticated and trendy.

8

No.

Okay, so denim may not be a new trend this Summer, but it’s definitely not a trend that’s going to fade away. Button-up denim skirts are very cute when paired with a statement tee or a tank top, while a pair of flared denim jeans look incredibly stylish and unique when paired with a flowy blouse and a sunhat!

9

No.

The romper trend really took charge this Summer and is one that you won’t want to miss out on. Whether you wear it on a date with a pair of strappy heals, or over a bathing suit while walking beside the ocean on a hot Summer’s day, the romper is perfect for any body type and is a great piece to add to your Summer closet collection.

10

No.

Last but not least, another fashion trend that is making its way into many closets this 2017 is the boho chic style that is full of loose-fit garments, a lot of crochet, and sexy lace staples that are bound to turn heads. This harmoniously bold look is ideal for the summertime and has already made its entrance to the fashion world through multiple summer music festivals and beach trips. |

10 TIPS

for Selecting Outdoor Furniture

by Lidancie Arts

When you’re creating a fun and functional entertainment patio, you need great outdoor furniture that fits your style. After all the effort you put into building your outdoor patio, complimenting it with the right furniture gives you the perfect place to relax. To select the best outdoor furniture for your outdoor entertainment area, start with these helpful tips.

ONE

Consider the space’s function Start by considering how you want the outdoor area to function. Will it be a dining area, a living room style space or combination of both? Create a list of the activities you plan on doing in the space and use that to determine the kind of outdoor furniture you purchase.

TWO

Try out the furniture Before purchasing any outdoor furniture for your patio, try it out by sitting on it and moving it around, if possible. Some outdoor furniture looks pleasing to the eye but can be uncomfortable or too heavy to move easily.

THREE

Choose low maintenance To promote the idea of a fun and relaxing space, choose low maintenance exterior furniture that won’t keep you painting, sanding and cleaning for hours annually. Outdoor furniture designs made from rattan, teak or metal are durable and require minimal upkeep.

FOUR

Consider storage needs To keep your outdoor furniture looking its best, you need a place to store it when you’re not using it. As durable as outdoor furniture can be, it still benefits and has a longer lifetime if you store it out of the

56

|

Missouri Magazine | June 2017

elements when appropriate. Foldable patio furniture or furniture that’s easy to take apart are good options.

FIVE

Incorporate color Outdoor furniture comes in a wide selection of colors, which means you’re not restricted to using natural wood tones or neutral colors such as white or beige. Choosing colorful cushions or finishes for your outdoor furniture creates a space that expresses your own personal style.

SIX

Fit the furniture to the space Overcrowding a patio with furniture is unattractive and can inhibit the flow of foot traffic. Place enough furniture in the space to provide comfort without overcrowding it. If you need additional space, consider extending your entertainment area into the lawn or garden.

SEVEN

Quality over quantity While it may cost less to buy several pieces of plastic chairs and tables for your patio, they’re not designed for durability or longevity. It’s better to invest in quality pieces that can withstand regular use and the elements without fading or suffering damage. Look for online reviews of the outdoor furniture you’re considering and ask your neighbors what has worked best for them.

EIGHT

Multipurpose furniture Even if your patio has ample space, it’s a good idea to invest in multipurpose outdoor furniture. Ottomans that serve as a central table can convert to extra seating or foot rests at needed. A simple bench that provides casual seating can be pulled up to a dining table for those extra guests. That round side table can provide an additional surface for eating in a pinch.

NINE

Add a rug

Placing the right rug amid indoor furniture can help tie a room together, and the same holds true for an outdoor space. Finding a quality, all-weather rug that coordinates with your outdoor furniture can provide cushioning underfoot and a cooler surface to walk on than a bare patio on a sunny day. In addition, an outdoor rug can bring the entire outdoor space together in style.

TEN

Provide shade On hot days, the sun can become too warm to remain outside for very long on your patio. Purchase attractive patio umbrellas or partial enclosures that coordinate with your outdoor furniture and provide needed shade. By selecting the right outdoor furniture for your patio, you can create an area that everyone will enjoy during nice weather.

What’s it like to go 270 mph on water?

What’s it like to go 270 mph on water? “I love it,” says Lucas Oil Top Fuel Hydro champ Sanders. The fastest man on water says driving a Top Fuel Hydro drag boat is not for everyone. “It’s like everything slows down the faster I go,” Bryan Sanders said. “I know that not everyone is built that way.” Sanders, who piloted the Tommy Thompson-owned Nitrochondriac to a 270 miles-per-hour run earlier this year, looks to make it three wins in three starts on the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series this weekend. The 6th annual John Haas Memorial Drag Boat Classic starts a three-day run on Friday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland. “We’re ready, man,” Sanders said of the trip to Lake Lucas. “We’ve had a big, long break since the last race and we are ready to go racing again. We love coming to Wheatland. That’s our premier track.” Sanders won the Haas Memorial en route to his first Top Fuel Hydro series championship in 2016. The Nitrochondriac team hasn’t missed a beat with wins in Arizona at Chandler’s Valley of the Sun Spring Nationals and Parker’s Colorado River Challenge. His 270.38 mph clocking during a 3.445-second run at the Colorado River Challenge was one of the fastest ever on water. The fastest pass in history remains the 274.95 mph that Scott Lumbert ran two years ago in the Spirit of Texas boat. Sanders said that all-time speed record is something he would like to achieve. “Is there more to come from it? Yeah there’s more to come,” Sanders said earlier this week in a telephone interview from his Houston, Texas home. “We’re not really leaning on it hard and it’s running the numbers

it’s running. It can do more, for sure. “I think 275 is very reachable and very do-able. I think we can make that happen. As we learn more in the progression of the boat and if we really wanted to step on it ... it’s possible this thing could run 280.” Of course, it would take a perfect combination of water, wind, temperature and performance for that to happen. “It depends on where you are for safety and shutdown,” Sanders said. “When you get these speeds, this thing doesn’t want to stop. Second thing is water conditions, meaning temperature of the water. The colder the water, the faster this thing wants to go. So you go to a place like Augusta (Georgia) or Parker (Arizona) where the water is cold, that’s where you get your big numbers from. Phoenix is pretty much in the middle. “You go to hot tracks and you’re not going after the miles per hour as hard as you are the ET (elapsed time). We went to a hot track in Marble Falls (Texas) and we broke the ET record.” Sanders credits crew chief Todd Haas and owner Thompson for the results and for putting together a championship team. Haas came over to boat racing a year ago after several years working in NHRA drag racing on pavement with drivers such as Tony Schumacher and Cruz Pedregon. “He made a big difference. He brought a lot of knowledge in technology with him over from NHRA, which he’d been with a long time,” Sanders said. “He’s an old boat racer so he knows the boats and bringing the technology (from NHRA) ... the latest and greatest ... he knows the boats. He knows how to apply it.” Sanders is a second-generation drag-boat racer. His dad drove Top Alcohol Flats for several years, | but before Bryan began racing boats he drove NHRA turbocharged car-tire drag bikes. “Then I boat one boat and then another,” he said. “Now here I am, running Top-Fuel. It just progressed.”

Asked to describe the sensation inside the capsule when the Top Fuel fires off the line and reaches 250 miles-per-hour you could almost envision Sanders smiling over the telephone. “I tell you, I love it,” he said. “I always get that little nerve-wracking deal right before I go. Who wouldn’t? When they close that capsule, it’s game on. “The best sensation for me is when you throw the parachutes out and everything has done what it’s supposed to do, that’s when you take your breath. There’s nothing quite like it.” Action in the Haas Memorial begins on Friday with the opening rounds of qualifying in both the pro and sportsman divisions. Saturday includes a doubleheader with racing both on Lake Lucas during the day and the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series on the dirt track at night. Drag boat weekend concludes on Sunday.
