Miss Missouri Teen USA Sophia Dominguez-Heithoff, 17, freshman at the University of Kansas, was picked by a handful of judges after a series of events including an interview, an evening gown presentation and an athletic wear competition. Dominguez-Heithoff beat out 50 other contestants representing 49 other states plus the District of Columbia. Miss Missouri Teen USA Sophia Dominguez-Heithoff dazzled the crowd and claimed the title of Miss Teen USA 2017.

An interview with

Sophia Dominguez-Heithoff Missouri Magazine: Please tell us about yourself. Sophia: I’m so proud to be born and raised in Missouri. I’m a hard worker, in and out of school, allowing me to graduate early and receive the Girls Scouts Gold Award. I dedicate a lot of my time to organizations that support people who have disabilities and also worked alongside Missouri state legislators to create policies that provide them with the best quality care. I just began my first week at the University of Kansas and plan to pursue a degree in Political Science and Ethics. I’m so excited to finally be on campus and meet new people!

Missouri Magazine: What do you like to do in your free time? Sophia: In my free time, I am an avid reader, specifically nonfiction books including American and World history. I also love to support our Kansas City sports teams! Missouri Magazine: What’s next for you, where would you like to go in your career? Sophia: For now, I plan to obtain my 4-year degree in Political Science and Ethics and eventually purse a law career to help influence public policy.

Missouri Magazine: What inspired you to compete in your first pageant? Sophia: Pageants give me an opportunity to share the many positives facets of being a woman. Women need to have a strong voice on relevant issues and I needed to be heard on my passion for issues on justice and inclusion. I learned at an early age that adults with developmental disabilities have a very difficult life and I want to work to improve their conditions. Missouri Magazine: Tell us about the Miss Missouri Teen USA competition. Sophia: I was encouraged to enter Miss Missouri Teen

USA by a middle school teacher and by the current Miss Missouri USA. With the strong support I received from my parents, I felt confident to compete. The contestants I met were wonderful young women, and it led to many life-long friendships. I am so fortunate and honored to represent my state as Miss Teen USA.

Missouri Magazine: Tell us about Miss Teen USA competition. Sophia: I became very close to all of the young women competing in Miss Teen USA and it was easy because we all had a common ground – a passion to use our platform to give back. The days leading up to the competition consisted of long hours at events, shoots, and rehearsals. I couldn’t believe at the end of the show that I was hand and hand with Vanessa, Miss Oregon Teen USA. When I heard ‘Missouri’, I was in complete shock and was immediately overwhelmed with love and support. I still think about that moment in disbelief. Missouri Magazine: What evening gown did you choose for the Miss Teen USA competition? Sophia: I competed in a silk, peacock blue Sherri Hill evening gown. Missouri Magazie: What was your interview question for Miss Teen USA? Sophia: During the interview portion of the competition, I was asked about the Girl Scouts Gold Award and what leadership values I displayed. Missouri Magazine: What does it mean to you to represent Teens across America? Sophia: It’s an honor to represent all teens across the US. I plan to spread a message of inclusion, and hope that other teens can join in on the action. Missouri Magazine: How has participating in Miss Teen USA changed your life? Sophia: It has been an incredible experience so far, and I still have so much more to look forward to. The first week after I was crowned, I hopped on a flight to New York City to begin my media tour. It was an exciting experience and opportunity to engage with people about who I am and what my goals are. A state of normality returned, but I look forward to an exciting year as both Miss Teen USA and a college freshman. Missouri Magazine: What appearances do you plan to make as Miss Teen USA? Sophia: I plan to be the voice for adults with developmental disabilities and to support the charitable organizations in my region and beyond.

Sophia: Having the title Miss Teen USA means that you must set goals. You must be grounded and have big dreams for your community. The crown is symbol of womanhood and the brilliant ideas that women have. To me it means to do good, cherish the small things and celebrate every day.

Missouri Magazine: Do you have a personal quote you live by? Sophia: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Missouri Magazine: What’s a typical day for you? Sophia: A typical day for me is classes, reading and more reading. I’m living the college student life now and since I’ve arrived, I’ve called my family every day and met many new friends. So far, I love the college experience! Missouri Magazine: What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind? Sophia: I want to leave a legacy that celebrates people because I believe that everyone brings a gift to friendship. Missouri Magazine: Tell us about your road to Miss Teen USA? Sophia: My road to Miss Teen USA has been nothing but an encouraging experience from my friends and family. As Miss Missouri Teen USA, I wanted to make sure that my state was proud of me and the challenge is greater now that I represent the nation.

Missouri Magazine: What advice can you give teens who are intimidated by all the glam on social media and struggle with self confidence? Sophia: My advice to teens that struggle with selfconfidence: Be yourself, be truthful and be a good friend.

Missouri Magazine: What was the most challenging aspect of the Miss Teen USA competition? Sophia: Balancing life has been the most challenging aspect. It’s easy to get pulled in many directions, but in the end you must be true to yourself.

Missouri Magazine: How can fans follow you? Sophia: You can follow my journey as Miss Teen USA on Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram at @MissTeenUSA.

Missouri Magazine: What does your crown mean to you?

Missouri Magazine: Anything else you would like to share? Sophia: I am excited to be in this role and I look forward to making a difference!

A young scientist, inventor and clockmaker by trade, Charles Henry lives in Silver Dollar City with his wife, Anna, and their only daughter, nine-year-old Emmaline. Charles is enthralled with the incredible works of visionary and adventurer, Jules Verne. The author of such incredible tales including Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days, captures the imagination of many during the late 19th century, including Charles and his young protégé. Most townsfolk think of Charles as a dreamer, with strange notions they don’t quite understand. But they humor his fantastical ideas, as deep down, even though they won't always admit it, they wonder whether it all might be possible. Emmaline, on the other hand, doesn’t wonder, she knows it’s possible as her dad teaches her everyday people can do amazing things. Charles insists dreaming is important, but you have to do something about those dreams to make a difference. In fact, he and Emmaline often repeat a mantra as they work side by side—

”Dream Big. Do Good.“ Charles is particularly enthralled with the idea of speed, time and flight. He is determined to build a machine that defies time.

T he F acts

Today, he and Emmaline invite the most intrepid townspeople to take flight in his most current prototype, taking riders on a fast and whirling tour which leaves them wondering if time is moving forwards or backwards!

DIVE LOOP: A dive loop is a type of inversion where the track twists upwards and to the side and then dives toward the ground in a half-vertical loop. Its inspiration comes from a stunt plane maneuver.

THE THRILL 6

Zero-G Roll

VERTICAL LOOP: The vertical loop is the most basic of roller coaster inversions. Specifically, the loop refers to a continuously upward-sloping section of track that eventually results in a complete 360 degree circle. At the top-most piece of the loop, riders are completely inverted. Typically, these loops are not actually "circles" but more of a teardrop shape, with the top of the loop being a tighter arc. This shape makes the loop more comfortable for riders than a true circle shape. ZERO-G ROLL: A zero-gravity roll or zero-g roll is an inversion where the track twists 360 degrees as it rises and falls in elevation, usually at the crest of a hill. The element gets its name from the weightless effect of zero g-force that a rider experiences during the inversion. September 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

Mizzou Football Preview

by Aaron J. Bass

The much-anticipated 2017 University of Missouri football season is fast approaching. Coach Barry Odom and Missouri will kick off the Tigers’ 2017 season against Missouri State at 11 a.m. Sept. 2 at Memorial Stadium.

A

fter a disappointing season last year Mizzou is not looking like the well-built and we’ll coached team they have in the past. Since entering the SEC in 2012 The Tigers went to back to back SEC championships and the champions of the SEC East giving many fans much excitement for the years to come. Instead they finish the 2015 campaign with a losing record and did not qualify for a bowl game. Last season was not any better. The Tigers went 4-8 with only 2 conference wins vs Vanderbilt (6-7) and Arkansas (7-6). With both those teams making bowl appearances it leaves this feeling of uncertainty as it brings the question “How can Mizzou do well against those teams yet be able to pull out at least one more win whether it be against South Carolina or Kentucky?”.The answer, close games.

24

|

Missouri Magazine | September 2017

Mizzou list two games in 2016 by scores or six or less points as they lost to #19 UGA 28-27 and unranked Middle Tennessee 5145 on homecoming. Both games showed very disappointing outings by their defense including giving up 584 total yards against Middle Tennessee. On the offensive side of the ball Mizzou who had the third most total offensive yards in the SEC is looking good as they are returning all but one starters including QB Drew Lock. Lock who is entering his junior season after putting up good numbers in his sophomore year as he totaled 3399 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. With the help of former freshman phenom Damarea Crockett at RB The Tiger backfield is looking more stacked than ever as they are returning over 80% of total offensive

production from last season, and are also bringing in freshman talent for the offensive line in Darvis Holmes the #87 overall recruit by 24/7 sports in the 2016 class. Mizzou this up and coming season is looking like an offensive force to be reckoned with. Their defense leaves something to desired as they were only able to bring in the 13th rank SEC recruiting class for 2016 and most of the players brought in were on the offensive side of the board. I expect The Tigers to make waves in the East but UGA is looking even better than last year and they have the defense that can pick up the slack that have on offense. For the rest of CFB this season is looking very exciting as every power five conference has at least two teams that can make a real move for the college football playoffs. The preseason Top-Five has what most would call “the familiar faces”; Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, USC, and Clemson. Four of five range from different conferences and three of the five participated in last year College Football Playoffs where #2 Clemson (at the time) defeated #1 Alabama 35-31 in a game for the ages. However not many expect the defending National Champs to make their thrid-straight appearance in the CFP as they are the only team in the Top-Five needing to replace their starting QB. This is one of the only seasons in the past 5+ years where most people can say the Top-Five shows the best teams this up

and coming season instead of the top teams from last year’s season. Now let’s breakdown this upcoming season and take a look at who I expect to win their respective conferences and who will make it to the 2018 College Football Playoffs. ACC: Florida State Florida State’s returning 15 out of their starting 22 on offense and defense. Of those returning are all ACC players Derwin James and Deondre Francois. France was expected to have a breakout season as last year his offense of line had major issues protecting him but with last years’ experience under their belt hopefully they’ll have no trouble protecting their Star Quarterback. Big 10: Ohio State Ohio State stirred up controversy last season as they made the college football playoffs without making the Big Ten Championship. And in said playoffs Clemson defeated them 31-0, with a team returning 14 of their 22 starters and Captain J.T. Barrett they are looking like they will control the Big 10 and make their championship this year. Big 12: Oklahoma With 16 starters coming back and Heisman finalist Baker Mayfield at the helm it’s easy to see the Sooners make it to their second college football playoff. Oklahoma will have one of the most explosive offenses this season however in the past their defense has been something to wish for. Hopefully with 7 returning starters that will change.

Group of Five Conferences: Wyoming The Cowboys return 15 starters along with potential Heisman quarterback Josh Allen. The big body strong-armed Gunslinger had a breakout sophomore campaign but the hype going into the 2017 year is bigger. With Houston and Western Michigan replacing their head coaches expect Wyoming to crash the party. PAC-12: Washington Bringing in the #22 recruiting is going to help the Huskies as they need to rebuild their dominate secondary. On offense, however Washington returns all Pac QB Jake Browning who had an amazing 2016 year. It’s not expected if his shoulder will nag him as it did late in the season but this Junior is looking to make a run at the Heisman Trophy SEC: Alabama With the #1 recruiting class for the 6th straight year and returning offensive stars Jalen Hurts, Bo Scarborough, and Calvin Ridley the Crimson Tide want to avenge last year’s CFP loss to Clemson. Expect them to no longer run a Cover Zero defense in the goal line this season. Playoffs 1) Alabama (13-0) 2) Ohio State (13-0) 3) Florida State (12-1) 4) USC (11-2) Tickets are available for the season by calling 1-800-CATPAWS (884-PAWS locally), or by going online at MUTigers.com.

A

mber Singer has already parked her camper, unloaded her boys’ 4-H projects, and has started to lay down a bed of straw for the show cattle when she gets a call from her husband … “Yes, you can spray them down… Yep, I’m sure it’s OK… OK thanks… See you soon. ”

10:15am “Breakfast.” 11:00am Quittin’ Time – “Everything!” She jokes. “Keeping everyone moving forward, helping where I can, taking lunch, mowing hay, raking hay, going to town to get parts, checking crops. That’s my job.”

makes her adamant about raising her family as an ag family? “What better way to live? It really is a wonderful lifestyle that teaches our kids real life skills that they will have forever. My 13 year-old is constantly checking the weather and market prices. He makes sure to let his dad know

Buddy and Amber Singer from rural Hale, MO are in the business of raising boys, cattle, chickens, ducks, hay and row crops. Amber does not let being the only woman on the farm keep her from being involved in the family business. I was able to hang out with Amber in the cattle barn at the Livingston County fair grounds so I asked her what a normal day looked like for her on the Singer Farm. 6:00am “We round up the show cattle and bring them in. Yes, we feed our animals before we feed ourselves.” She says with a smile. “On Sunday’s we usually ‘meal prep’ for the animals and we will weigh their food out all at once so it makes it easier for us during the week.” 7:00am – 9:00am “We take the show cows on a walk, then wash, brush and blow out their hair every day. We make sure they are standing for two hours.” 9:30am – 10:00am “The boys then chore their ducks and chickens.”

Farm life really is something new every day. In addition to her dual roles of Mom and Farmhand, Singer has had to change her way of thinking from “checking things off of a to-do list” to “organized priorities” in order to keep her family and operation successful. “Our work is never done, so you really have to prioritize to keep going. When we are between fields, I will stop by the house and throw something in the slow cooker. Or if we are in the area to move equipment, I will run in the house and switch the laundry.” What makes Singer love the farm life? What

when we need to sell to make the most money! Our boys (ages 13, 8 and 6) aren’t just learning how to change fuel filters on old John Deere tractors, they’re learning that you can still be successful by working with what you have and by being good to the land.” As for the County Fair season, the Singers attend 10-12 cattle shows per year. “We want our boys be good stewards to the land and animals and the only way for them to learn is for them to be hands on in the operation and to let them have responsibilities. There are so many opportunities within 4H and FFA that kids can learn; it’s not just about

the livestock. By the end of the summer, our boys will have participated in: public speaking, judging, showing, photography and sewing. The fair is a learning opportunity and it helps them to enhance personal growth and it also establishes relationships that they do not get on the farm. It gets them out of their comfort zone, meeting new people and building relationships.” Carrying On.. “I try to be as encouraging as I can with my family – giving credit where credit is due because the daily workload can be tiring. I know this lifestyle can be challenging and I am so thankful that we can do it as a team. Our boys see Buddy and I working together everyday and it gives them an example on how to work together. Buddy is the fourth generation farmer on our farm and as we grow and expand, we are calculating every move towards success because we want this to be a place that our boys can come back to live and work, if they choose.” As I watched her go back to work, it’s obvious the love Singer has for her family and her Missouri farm. Her modest look: gold band, no makeup, messy bun and “Mom of Boys” T-Shirt is a perfect representation of the Missouri Farm Wife. She wears her role with pride…through and through!

The William K. Busch Brewing Co.

Meet the Brewmaster: Marc Gottfried Marc Gottfried drinks Kräftig on the job. And he’s paid for it, too. It’s one of the perks of being a brewmaster. But there’s a whole lot more to the job than just drinking lager. From helping create the Kräftig recipes to overseeing the entire brewing process, Marc is a man committed to quality. Meet the guy who spends most of his waking life surrounded by beer: Brewmaster Marc Gottfried.

What drew you to the beer industry? While I really don’t know for sure since I was so young, I usually attribute it to the immense presence of the beer industry in St. Louis. I lived in Connecticut until I was 12 and we didn’t have any one industry that the region wore like a badge of honor. Curious, I went on several brewery tours with my mom and I eventually started homebrewing at the age of 14. Keep in mind my mom was a nationally-respected microbiologist and textbook author, so she humored my new hobby for its scientific value. My interest piqued after a meeting she set up for me with now retired brewmaster, Phil Columbatto, who offered encouragement and advice. We are still good friends today.

to be very challenging. The process isn’t like making lemonade where you can just double or triple a recipe by adding more ingredients. There are countless variables to take into account when trying to make a beer in a brewery other than the one it was developed in. We piloted Kräftig and Kräftig Light in a small format, and when we realized we had a winner, I had to blow it up for production. What do you find most rewarding about being a brewmaster? This is a pretty big dork answer, but the finetuning of a recipe to maintain consistency. You hear slogans like “The same recipe since 1901…” but that’s never true. I like to say that we never brew the

same recipe twice in an attempt to make the same beer every time. As brewers, we are dealing with crops and their ever-changing characteristics. The brewer must pay attention to the analyses of these crops and alter the recipe so that they have the same effect on the finished product. What inspires you? Witnessing a consumer buying our beer. A legitimate sale without influence from my being there or having talked to them first tells me that we are doing something right. That person decided to give up some of their hard-earned money in exchange for something we made. It inspires me to maintain our level of quality so that we do not let that person down.

What has been the biggest challenge working as a brewmaster? When I transitioned from being a craft brewer using a 15bbl. manual brewhouse to a premium lager brewer using a 1440bbl. fullyautomated brewhouse, it was and continues

What’s the craziest beer you’ve ever tried? A very long time ago, there was a homebrewing competition where the goal was to make the most disgusting looking beer that tasted fantastic. This one guy made a jet-black beer with squid that he had cooked to the point of being flavorless. The white squid tentacles in the black beer were a gross contrast, yet the beer was quite good – a schwartzbier, I think. If you could have a beer with anyone who ever lived, who would it be and why? My mom. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for her vision on an obviously sensitive subject given the age I was when I started. Brain cancer took her quickly, and while she got to see some of the fruits of her labor, it would be nice to share a Kräftig Light with her… or two. Being a brewmaster ain’t easy, but Marc Gottfried does a great job of making it look that way. Kräftig wouldn’t be the same without him. Prost to you, Marc!

Patchwork Denim

SCHOOL STYLE by Jazmin Decker

The start of a new school year means making a great first impression and picking out the best first day ensemble! Whether you’re planning on debuting any new fall-wardrobe buys or spicing up the clothing you’ve had for a while, putting a lot of thought into your debut look is necessary! Here are a few inspirations to polish up your outfit and create a campus ready look that is guaranteed to turn some heads!

34

|

Missouri Magazine | September 2017

Fall always brings a new denim trend and this year is no exception. In Selena Gomez’s music video for her new song “Bad Liar” she officially brought back the 70’s style which means it’s time to embrace the patchwork denim again! High-waisted patchwork denim jeans are a fashion statement and can be a lot to look at, so if you want to keep the outfit casual, simply pair the jeans with a plain, white tank top or tee and a pair of sneakers. If you’d rather rock a denim jacket, choosing to wear the pieced together denim over a mini skirt and some modern accessories creates the perfect mixture of modern and vintage.

Bell Sleeves

Band Tees

Boho Overalls

Bell sleeves are back and bigger than ever! Crowds at school love to inject a little drama into their outfits and the statement sleeve is the way to do so. Many bell sleeves are versatile enough to wear by themselves, or can still be pulled off by layering a dress or a vest on top of it. Whether it be in a blouse or a shift dress, channel your inner 1960’s and make a major statement this back to school season.

Overalls made a comeback statement this summer and are accelerating into the fall as well. Mix your short or long boho overalls with your warmest fall layers to take your look from summer to fall and create the cutest fall outfit for the chilly Friday-night football games. Layer an oversized plaid flannel or simply tie one around your waste to create the ultimate fall outfit.

From AC/DC and ZZ Top all the way to the Beatles and Guns & Roses, people everywhere are taking to the streets and rocking their band-tees. Wear your tee with jeans and a leather jacket for a laid-back look or pair it with a mini skirt and some fishnet stockings for an edgier feel. No matter how you choose to style the shirt, you can’t go wrong with a vintage band t-shirt and you sure will feel good wearing it knowing you look incredibly good in your outfit for the day.

Laced-Up Neutrals

Suede

Suede has been super popular these past few months in the form of skirts, dresses, shirts, and boots, but this fall the suede jackets are back in and provide a more boho style if paired with fringe. Go for a more classic look by pairing a suede jacket with a striped shirt and a skater skirt or add a summery dress with tights and ankle boots for a chilly, fall day.

36

|

Missouri Magazine | September 2017

Cargo Jackets

Although this trend may be a throwback to the early 2000’s, many women everywhere are wearing the lace-up dresses, shirts, and bodysuits. These laced-up beauties provide just enough coverage and have a very trendy vibe about them. The most popular way to wear this style is to tuck it into a pair of high waisted jeans and a stylish belt. Another way to strut this style for this back-toschool season is by wearing a laced-up neutral dress, a nice sunhat and a pair of booties.

Army green cargo jackets aren’t, by any means, a new trend and have been popular for many, many years. If you want to make your outfit look both feminine and masculine at the same time, try to mix proportions or textures with a longer sweater and a pair of shorts or a short skirt. Layering necklaces and a beanie with your cargo jacket provides a great mixture of femininity and masculinity allowing you to create the cutest fall outfit.

Bomber Jackets

Classic White Tee

Cutesy Tomboy

The classic white tee is cute, classic and comfy and can ultimately be worn thousands of different ways. Go for a more daring look by adding a pair of leather pants or leggings and colored highheals or pair your white tee with eyecatching accessories and bold makeup to create a bold pop to your outfit. No matter how you choose to wear your white tee, there’s absolutely no way you can wear it wrong!

Put a girly spin on a sporty trend this school semester by wearing mesh like jerseys or letterman jackets and pairing it with femme like colors and patterns scoring you the ultimate look. If you don’t feel like wearing sporty clothing, try pairing the skater look with brighter colors creating the perfect blend of tomboy and femininity.

The bomber jacket is the biggest fashion trend this fall and is sweeping the nation with style. Wear the jacket with a pair of skinny jeans and classic Adidas shoes to create the perfect weekend outfit or add a plain colored hat and a pair of heals for the perfect mixture of laid back and classy. Either way you choose to wear the jacket, make sure to be confident in what you wear and rule the school in your perfect outfit.

Tina Newton Photography I have been shooting weddings since 2011. I am a hopeless romantic and I cry at every single wedding! Call me a baby, but there is just something about the excitement of a wedding day and the beginning of someone’s forever. At my grandmother’s funeral her wedding album sat out and I just remember thinking to myself how the photographer caught their personality so perfectly. That is true beauty and that is what I strive for at every wedding. It’s when you can look back at those photos that are so old of family members and see the beauty of who that person was, as almost looking into their soul.

New Solar Installation Now Makes Les Bourgeois Vineyards Largest Solar-Powered Winery In Missouri A long-time local leader in sustainability, Les Bourgeois Vineyards is continuing its efforts to run a more environmentally-conscious operation with the addition of a solar electric system perched atop their wine-making facility. With the help of Above All Energy (AAE, a solar electric installation company based in MidMissouri), a commercial loan secured by Wood & Huston Bank, and a grant from the USDA, the 240 American-made solar panels will offset an estimated 57 thousand pounds of coal burned each year. Travellers along I-70 can view the installation from the highway, delighting both passersby and wine enthusiasts alike. “We are really excited about this install as a company because, not only does it make a green statement being so visible from the highway,” said Curtis Bourgeois, Chief Financial Officer at Les Bourgeois Vineyards, “but it also will save us over

$8 thousand annually which we can now funnel into the development of our winemaking and distillate programs.” AAE specializes in small commercial solar installations, placing a strong emphasis on American-made products and personalized service. “We work closely with the USDA and other government programs to try to find the best incentives for our customers,” said Scott Williams, Owner of AAE. “I pride myself in working with every customer personally from start to finish, ensuring their energy needs and financial goals are met.” The solar energy created will help bring power to the winery’s tank system, which regulates the temperature of the wine tanks. The Les Bourgeois Vineyards Tasting Room and Gift Shop offers weekend tours of the wine-making facility. Through the winery tours, which include entrance into the Barrel Room and production facility, patrons can Guys in the photo: Above All Energy, including AAE's president, Scott Williams.

by Jazmin Decker Just(In) Memory, an online store that sells homemade boho jewelry, is a company that not only sells incredibly beautiful pieces, but also has a beautiful backstory behind the works of jewelry as well. Mackenzie Hamilton and Danikka Bartolo created and own this online store to help men who battle with addiction on a daily basis. Mackenzie’s brother, Justin, passed away after battling with his addiction, so Mackenzie decided she wanted to do something in memory of her brother. Knowing that she wouldn’t want anyone else to struggle with addiction like he did. Mackenzie and Danikka created Just(In) Memory to help those who are struggling at the moment as well. The majority of the proceeds from making the jewelry are given to No Longer Bound, located in Cumming, Georgia. No Longer Bound takes in men who are battling with addictions and assists them with getting a job and overcoming their addictions. “This company offers a 12 month long, residential process to rescue addicts, regenerate men, and reconcile families.” Everyone who is working at No Longer Bound has struggled with addiction in one way or another, has gone through the program, and has overcome their addiction. The majority of the proceeds from the jewelry that Mackenzie and Danikka sell are sent to No Longer Bound and are used to assist them with renovating and building more housing for the

men going through the program, food for the men, and anything else that they see is needed to help their organization and their program grow! McKenzie shared that her brother was “one of the best people she has ever met in her lifetime and was ultimately her best friend. She has never met a better brother, father or person in her entire life.” Everyone that knew him absolutely loved him and she wants people to remember him as who he was and not by what had happened in his lifetime. Justin was 31 years old, a husband to his beautiful wife Cassie, and the father of two precious kids Collyns and Hensley. Justin’s favorite thing to do was be a

father and spend time with his family. His love for his family was never questioned and he had a strong faith in God. He grew up playing baseball most of his life and was loved by everyone. He had a smile that could brighten anyone’s day and his love for people was shown daily through his business with Tomahawk Pest Services that he owned with his brother, Jeremy Hamilton. “Justin was only 31 years old when he passed and there’s not a day goes by that I don’t think that he should be here, that at 31 years old, his life was just getting started. Justin should be remembered for being the best friend anyone could have had, the class clown and a teammate to so many. I want him to be remembered by his smile, his contagious laugh and sense of humor. Most importantly I want him to be remembered for his love that he had for his sweet family.”

Back-to-School

Healthy Lunches

by Jazmin Decker

When it comes to healthy lunchbox ideas for this back-to-school month, packing a lunchbox for your child can go from being healthy to really boring in just the duration of a week. With today’s society being full of extremely unhealthy foods, making a balanced and healthy lunch for your child should be the highest priority. Coming up with creative, healthy lunchbox ideas can be difficult, so here are dozens of lunch ideas easy to pack and easy to love! September 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

63

main course The main course is the part of the lunch that your child will be looking forward to the most this back-to-school season and there’s not many ways you can go wrong! Cooking up grilled chicken bites or a grilled chicken sandwich is one way to provide the correct amount of protein, or if your child prefers the chicken

in a different form you can create a chicken quesadilla or a grilled chicken wrap as well. Other healthy lunch alternatives include your choice of pasta, tacos, lunch meat sandwiches, rolls & tuna, bagels, or cheese and crackers. Any of these choices offers a wide variety of main courses for your child to choose from and enjoy.

snack & treats Snacks and treats are a necessity for any child attempting to make it through the school day and unhealthy snacks can only slow them down. Instead of chips, cookies, or candy, try stuffing their lunchboxes with nuts, trail mix, string cheese, hummus, cheese crackers, fruit snacks, popcorn, yogurt, fig bars, or pretzels. Healthier snacks and treats are better for your child to consume and are important for them to have

side dishes Alongside the main course comes the fruits and veggies! If your child despises fruits or vegetables, try to make it fun and switch it up to find out which fruits and veggies they enjoy consuming. A few fruits and vegetable that many children are known to enjoy are bananas, apples, carrots, peaches, applesauce, grapes,

edamame, and celery. If possible, try to cut the food into shapes or objects that your child will love to look at and relate to. My personal favorite ever since I was a child has been ants on a log made from peanut butter and raisins on top of a log of celery. Children love it and it’s super easy to make in the morning!

throughout the duration of the day. If you want to change it up a little bit, try covering fruit like blueberries or raspberries in yogurt and freezing them overnight, providing your child with a cool, refreshing snack.

All the recipes created in this article make sure to include most, if not all, of the main necessities needed for a healthy lunch. It’s okay to include items in the lunch that may consist of some salt, sugar, or fat. When this is the case, just make sure to balance it out with food like yogurt that is lower in sugars or fruits covered in yogurt instead of candy as a treat. As you can see, not all of this is unrealistic and hard to recreate. These recipes are delicious and offer a wide variety of choices, many of which your children will love and want repeated day after day. If that’s the case, do not stress! If the lunches are healthy, you shouldn’t be ashamed to offer the same foods repeatedly because you know the food will for sure be eaten up and not wasted! Take control and provide healthy lunches for your child, they will benefit from it and thank you for it later!

Located in the heart of the city lies the Missouri State Museum, the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, the Lewis and Clark Monument, the Fountain of the Centaurs, and the Jefferson City Museum of Modern Art. To add a little excitement and mystery, consider visiting the Missouri State Penitentiary, the prison of Missouri that operated from 1836 to 2004. Serving as the state’s primary maximum security institution, the architecturally beautiful prison serves as a wonderful and famous piece of history. Lake Ozark has a humid climate with hot summers and multiple thunderstorms. If you’re looking for a cool insight into history, try visiting the Lewis and Clark Boat House. This exhibit includes full-scale replicas of the boats used by Lewis and Clark and it also walks you through their 1804 expedition. SECOND GENERATION RACER

scott chism

Finds Fit In Lucas Oil Speedway Street Stock Division

(Kenny Shaw Photo) Scott Chism and the Big O Tires Street Stocks wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway.

80

|

Missouri Magazine | September 2017

“It’s been a little bit of a rough year, This is the first year I’ve run the Street Stocks and it’s a learning process. There’s more than goes into those than people think. “But I’m enjoying it and having fun. The guys that race the Street Stocks at Lucas are a good group of guys.” The makings of a much-needed good night as he finished second in a heat race turned in the blink of an eye - and a smoking motor - as Scott Chism came to the checkered flag. A blown motor left Chism loading up early and a non-starter in last Saturday’s Big O Tires Street Stocks feature at Lucas Oil Speedway. He’s 10th in the points chase entering this week’s Season Championship program, which is admittedly disappointing. “It’s been a little bit of a rough year,” the Bolivar, Mo., driver said in reviewing his 2017 season. “This is the first year I’ve run the Street Stocks and it’s a learning process. There’s more than goes into those than people think. “But I’m enjoying it and having fun. The guys that race the Street Stocks at Lucas are a good group of guys.” Chism, the Tailgate Guys Radio Show Spotlight Driver of the Week for Lucas Oil Speedway, is carrying on the legacy of one of the Ozarks’ favorite drivers. His green-colored No. 8 is a tribute to his father, Ozarks Area Racers Foundation Hall of Famer, Roger Chism. For Scott Chism, 48, the complimentary comments about his car are frequent from fans who remember seeing his dad race. The decision to build and race a Street Stock after many years in a Modified was made in harmony with his dad’s wishes.

“I started in about the mid-1990s, running Modifieds, and I struggled there for a while,” Scott Chism said. “The last about 10 years, I went to running B-Mods and we started finding our niche in those. Then it got to the point where I just wanted to try something new. “My dad’s always liked those old Street Stocks, so I told him I’d build one. He passed away about a year ago. But he liked those old cars and they’re a lot of fun. I’m having fun racing again.” Scott Chism said his dad always was the driving force behind his racing. Roger quit racing in the late 1980s after a long career on area speedways. “He pushed me,” Chism said. “He’s one of those types that could drive the wheels off anything, but when it came to working on them, he didn’t do that much. So a lot of times we lacked information, but we always figured something out. He kept pushing me to keep going, to keep trying and I appreciate that.” Scott Chism also appreciates good friends who are willing to help in difficult times. After the blown motor last week, Modified racer Tracy Wolf has offered to loan him a motor if Chism can’t get his own fixed in time for Saturday’s races. “Tracy Wolf is good people,” Chism said, adding that the camaraderie among the drivers as a whole is strong.

September 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

81

“They make things real competitive every night, but you can drive clean with them and race hard and have fun. You can then go back to the pits and talk,” Chism said. “It’s just a good time.” Chism’s said his race crew consists of wife Freda, son Bau Chism who’s crew chief and friend Brandon Patton. Sponsors include Stepping Stone Office Products in Bolivar, Joe’s Tire of Stockton, R & R Graphics and Double H Lawn Care. He’s hoping for a strong finish on Saturday to build some momentum for specials around the region this fall - including the Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Hunt at Lucas Oil Speedway Oct. 6-7.

“We’re gonna try to move around a little bit and see what we can do,” Chism said. “If you can run well at Lucas, you can go about anywhere and be competitive.” Champions in the Big O Tires Street Stocks, Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds, Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mods and Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models will be determined on Saturday. It’s Bill Roberts Chevrolet-Buick Season Championship Night Presented by KYOO-Your Country 99 & KPOW-Power 97.7. It also will be Public Safety Appreciation Night as all police, fire and rescue personnel will be admitted free with ID. Police, fire and rescue vehicles will be displayed on the midway.
