Riona O’Sullivan Make up artist
Riona O’Sullivan is freelance fashion make-up artist living in London. The look for the shoot was ‘Sailor Girl’ and to achieve this I used an electric blue liquid liner for a modern take. For the lead singer in Cushh, I did a classic 40’s look - soft flick eye-liner, fresh skin but with the modern touches being a glossy fuchsia pink lip and diamanté around the eyes. My all time favourite movies would have to be: ‘Rear Window’ - 50’s icon Grace Kelly looked stunning as usual with some fabulous outfits. “Guys and Dolls’ - the set design was brilliant and makes me wish I could go back in time. ‘Labyrinth’ (I must have watched it over 50 times as a kid and still love it!) ‘The Shining’, ‘Clockwork Orange’...the genius and twisted ones that stick in your head days after! I love all the old films where every ‘pause’ could be a poster!
Adebunmi V.O Sanusi Hair Stylist
She has been in the hair industry with experience as a senior stylist and has trained at one of London’s top hair salons, Amina Kadia hair salon and award winning stylist Amina Lawal. She has quickly developed the trade and the skills that have led to her success. Self driven and ambitious, she has had the privilege of styling high profile clients such as Late Mrs Mariam Babangida, Aysha Sessay (CNN News), Jemima Cousin (Black Hair Magazine) to name a few, she has worked with designers such as Yemi Osunkoya (Kosibah), Pierre Garroudi, Alexander Longe, The Collective and Yetty D. She has worked on high profile fashion shows such has London Peace Week Fashion show 2009, London Fashion Week 2010 and Face of Nigeria 2009.

Bisi’s creativity, innovation, and mastery of the arts are evident in her successful career as an architect, and her other interests including sketching, painting and graphics and web design. As a huge fan of the arts, Bisi also loves listening to music, playing the piano and watching movies. My favourite movies are Lean on me and Double Jeopardy. I’m a fan of Tyler Perry and I get Inspired by how well he’s done despite where he started off from.
Alison Cameron Make up artist
Alison started her career working for MAC Cosmetics in Sept 2006. “I knew a bit about makeup, thankfully enough for the good folks at MAC to take a chance with me!” She passed her makeup test and was unleashed on the general public at the MAC counter Fenwick, Brent Cross. It was there she learnt her craft. “The customers show you no mercy, you better know what you’re talking about!”4 years later, Alison is working in fashion, music, advertising with the odd Bride thrown in. Her surroundings, colour, texture, moods, the atmosphere influence Alison and the electricity of an environment, a smile, a look, the wind, the sea, light, shadow...everything! On date night I’d rather...Go to the cinema, but if I wasn’t married I’d say dinner so you can talk to your date! If I was cast in a movie it would be with...Johnny Depp hands down!! He is such an amazing actor, I would have loved to be on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean... Favourite movie genre...Action Adventure.. I love a good family blockbuster like Transformers, X-men, that kind of thing with explosions and fight scenes and other worldly characters, yeah! alisoncameron.carbonmade.com

EDITOR’S NOTE WHO IS YOUR MOVIE ICON? Welcome to another issue of SideView Magazine. We have amazing treats for our readers, with an exciting new addition and a give-away prize for one lucky reader. Who is your Movie Icon? Growing up I always loved recreating the looks from all my favourite movies. I remember trying to find leggings to rival those of Olivia Newton John in Grease. Believe it or not as a child I always remember looking forward to going home but not to see my parents or play time but to make myself tea with my mother’s tea set that only came out for special occasions and watch Mary Poppins. In this issue, we explore emerging actors and actresses and also those who have made the mark in the acting world. On our cover is international model and stylist to the stars Tosh Yanez. Having worked with the most amazing celebrities in Hollywood and the best magazines Tosh has decided to immerse himself in the world of acting. His movie, ‘The House On The Black Lane’ gained rave reviews about his performance. Find out more about Tosh’s plan for the future and what he thinks about African women. Other interviews we have lined up are with LisaRaye McCoy from the popular sitcom All of Us which is based on the life of Will Smith and her new reality show The Real McCoy. We also sit down with Hakeem Kae-Kazim from X-Men Origins & Hotel Rwanda and Adewale Akinnouye Agbaje of Bourne Identity & Lost. (Page 36 ) We are ever so excited that summer is here again and because we are so happy we will be giving away a pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs Sunglasses in time for the summer. To win simply follow us on twitter @SideViewAfrica. The winner will be picked at random and will be announced in the next issue. Fancy being on the cover of SideView? Take a look at page 52 for details of the competition. Get in touch by email at editors@sideviewmagazine.com or follow me on Twitter @DumebiSideview Editor Dumebi Agbakoba
I asked the Side View team who their movie icons are and why.... Creative Photographer, Seyi Charles George My movie icons have to be the women: Jane Fonda as Barbarella in Barbarella, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Alien. If I could shoot any of them it would be Sigourney Weaver, she looks fearless. Editor at Large, Tinu Adesugba The Late John Candy, I remember as a child being glued to the TV laughing my head of. His comedic timing was genius! Contributing Photographer, Jen Salt My movie icons.... I would have to say Tim Burton as a director, his movies are so recognisable and always strangely beautiful. If you’re after an actor/actress I think Jonny Depp as he consistently astounds me with the roles he plays, he is one of Hollywood’s most handsome actors but he very rarely will play a “conventional” handsome hollywood role. Whether he is doing quirky characters or psychological roles, I always find him mesmerisingly believable. A movie star I would love to shoot is ... Tilda Swinton. She has such an unusual face, the possibilities for images are endless! I’ve seen some truly stunning imagery of her, she’s obviously quite happy to try something a little bit different other than the usual beautiful pictures most actresses opt for.

Get the Look by Imelda Ladebo
Bronzed Goddess
Resident make up artist Imelda Ladebo shows you how to achieve the bronzed goddess look this summer. Here’s a summary on how to recreate this look providing you with the tools and products used.
Start by applying your foundation and setting it with loose powder (liquid foundation will help achieve that dewy look) Brush your brows in place using a brow brush and then fill them out using a brow pencil. Rimmel’s Eyebrow pencil (brown), £2.79, was used on the model Prime your entire lids using BMPRO’s eye shadow primer, £10.00 (or any other eye shadow primer). Using a flat eye shadow brush, apply eye shadow pigment (Bare minerals pigment in true gold, £12.00) on the entire eye lids and using the same brush, go over it with M.A.C’s goldmine eye shadow, £11.00 To achieve the dark brown crease, apply Prestige eye shadow in Rosin, £6.00, using a crease brush and blend in properly. Draw a thin line across the lash line using Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner in black, £17.00, with a small angle brush. For the waterline, use a black kohl eye pencil and avoid smudging on to the lower lids. Finish the eyes off with a pair of sacred lashes (bobby), £8.50, to elongate the eyes giving a full impact with the side sweep. To create that extra glow on the cheeks, sweep some of NARS’ bronzer (casino), £22, across the cheeks, Tzone and chin. Be careful not to over bronze your face, so use soft light strokes during application. Go over the cheeks with a blush brush sweeping some of Sleek’s blusher (flushed), £3.99, to brighten and define the cheeks. Finally for those gold lips: use a lip brush to apply some of M.A.C’s bronze shimmer lipstick, £12.50, and go over it with Lancôme’s colour fever lip gloss in pure gold, £17.00 to make the colour “pop”.

You’ve probably seen him or caught a glimpse of his work in international campaigns; from being Kate Moss’s leading man in Donna Karan’s Spring/Summer 2008 Campaign to styling for the likes of Harper’s Bazaar (Russia) and working with the biggest names in Hollywood. The laid back hottie took time out of his busy schedule to sit with Side View. We found Tosh to be extremely down to earth as he answered all the questions we threw at him, from wearing boxers or briefs to more serious issues such as the size 0 debate.

Side View COVER FEATURE need you in with the model’. They never said Kate Moss. So I get on set and there is this blonde model with huge Donna Karan Sunglasses , at this point I didn’t recoginse her and I had to kiss her for the shot. During her wardrobe change I’m asked what it feels like to kiss Kate Moss and I got a bit confused because I thought I had never met her before, and everyone on set starts laughing. I felt so embarrassed because I hadn’t recognised her and I begged the crew on set not to tell her. However she was a good sport and she started cracking up. I have been a pretty big fan of hers for a while so that definitely broke the ice.
SV: I’m sure your get this a lot but wow..that body? Side View: Your a Model, Stylist and Actor, can you tell us who Tosh is? Tosh: I grew up in LA where I was discovered by the editor of Teen Magazine and now i’ve been modelling for nine years. I get to work with beautiful people and I love what I do. Everyday is a different story and to get paid to tell a beautiful story and work with such beauty makes me feel truly blessed. SV: What comes first, being a Model, Stylist or an Actor? T: Definitely modelling. Styling has taken a back sit as I get bigger modelling campaigns -acting is new. I was in the Chrysler ad that ran during the Oscars, but I’ll have to say modelling is my forte. SV: So when you see yourself on the billboards or in the adverts, what thoughts go through your mind? T: Oh definitely excitement. It’s always the same. My friends will usually call me and tell me they’ve seen me in a magazine or a billboard. If its a billboard then I’ll run there and see if I like it first of all. I remember the first time I was on a billboard, my parents came with me and we all took pictures in front of it and we were all so excited.
T: I look after myself and I watch what I eat and I exercise. SV: That said as a model, where do u stand on the whole size 0 debate? T: I think it’s very sad. I’ve been in this industry and have seen models killing themselves for it. The foundation of this industry is not always built on morals and ethics but that said, it can also be beautiful and rewarding and that’s what I love about it. SV: On a lighter note, what do you think about African women? T: (LAUGHS) I love African women, I’ve been lucky to work with some African models here in LA and I find them really beautiful people. SV: Who would you love to work with? T: Mert Alas and Marcus Pigott definitely. They shot the Donna Karan campaign and i’m a big fan of theirs. SV: Who would you never want to work with again? T: (Giggles) That’s a tough one. I’ve been really lucky to have worked with people I like. But if I think of anyone I’ll let you know.
SV: There were a lot of rave reviews about the Spring/Summer ‘08 Donna Karan campaign. Were you nervous about working with Kate Moss?
SV: The industry is getting so competitive, do you have any advice for anyone trying to break into it?
T: It’s a funny story about what happened on that shoot. When my agent called me for that job, I knew it was a Donna Karan campaign but I did not know that Kate Moss would be the leading lady. So I showed up early in the morning and I saw a blonde model shooting in the distance. I went into hair and make-up, minding my own business until I was called frantically and they said ‘Tosh I
T: Anyone that is trying to break into any aspect of the industry needs to understand what it entails and thats what I have always done. If you want to be a model, understand what or who the client is, what the photographer wants. You cannot be just a pretty face in this industry. More importantly, you have look after yourself. Do not party too much!

Hakeem Kae-Kazim Photography: Seyi Charles George Interview by Dumebi Agbakoba
Side View: Hi Hakeem, so tell us about yourself Hakeem: Well I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in London. I went to Bristol Biggs computer school and the Royal National Theatre; from there I moved to South Africa where I worked for 10 years and finally ended up moving to Los Angeles 2 years ago to pursue my career further. SV: London to South Africa? H: I actually went for a wedding but ended up staying there for 10 years. Someone asked me to do a commercial for the soft drink Fresca and at the time I didn’t not realise it would be so successful. It became this huge deal and that’s how I ended up living there. SV: What was the experience like? H: I left Nigeria for London at a very young age so I didn’t notice the change much. But going from London to South Africa was very interesting. I moved between 1994 and 1995 when Mandela had just been elected as President, so it was a very exciting time. SV: When did you get your big break? H: Hotel Rwanda was my first big movie break that launched me into America. I got nominated for a Gemini Award (the Canadian equivalent of the Emmys).

SV: I found Fourth Kind a bit scary, how did you feel about taking on the role? H: Oh wow - It was so interesting! To make it believable I had to bury myself in alot of books. I found it fascinating with all the findings and visiting the different museums was a very enjoyable experience. SV: What’s the next project for you? H: I am working on another movie called Dove 4 and this will be with a few well known actors. I plan to spend alot of time in Nigeria this year working on a couple of
Side View 34
SV: Have you ever considered moving back to Nigeria? H: I would love to go back. It’s a fantastic country. I will do so many things - as they say its the land of opportunity. projects – I am doing a movie with a director called Jetta Amata who did Amazing Grace. I like the fact that he is stepping out of the box.
SV: What do you think of Nollywood? H: It is interesting; they captured the art of storytelling. It’s now the second biggest film industry in the world. So they must be doing something right. I definitely think things can be improved in terms of production. More and More film-makers are emerging and also more film makers from this side of the pond are moving back home. This definitely is exciting for actors like myself.
SV: Your personal style.... H: Funky casual. SV: When you’re off set and not working, how do you relax? H: I love spending time at home, just sitting down to chill and take it all in. I have two girls, so I spend time with them and watch them grow up.
SV: Do you think you would go from acting to become a director later on in your career? H: Yes. I would love to. I am actually producing a couple of things right now. I want to produce and direct. I have been in America for 4 years now and I am working on putting money into productions and things SV: How do you get ready for a movie? H: If you are really lucky you have multiple movies. You have to be able to prepare accordingly. I do a lot of study and research to develop a character to try and make them as real as possible. For example if I have to do accents, I study the language and really immerse myself into the whole experience. Just like the movie the Fourth Kind, I had to study them and really get into the cultures. SV: What’s been the most exciting time in your movie career? H: I will say doing ‘24’. I really enjoyed the character and doing 12 episodes of it and the movie ‘The Redemption’.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje The Nigerian Diamond in Hollywood By Kay Kay Omar I remember when Bourne Identity was released in 2003 a friend could not get over the fact that Yoruba was spoken in the movie. “They spoke Yoruba,” the friend said over and over again as he urged me to watch the movie. It would seem that this was the most important event in the movie which, with all the stunts and plot twists, it was not. But for a Nigerian, it felt good to hear our native tongue being spoken on a major Hollywood motion picture.
The character responsible for all the excitement was Nykwana Wombosi, a funny name for a Yoruba-speaking dictator seeing as the name sounds more like Swahili than Yoruba. But Hollywood rarely cares about such thingsan African language was spoken by an African character, who cares if the name and language do not match! For those of us who care, it was even more exciting to find that the reason why Yoruba was spoken by character with a Swahili name, was because the actor is Yoruba. Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje (Nykwana Wombosi) is a Briton of Nigerian parentage. Judging from his triplebarrelled African name and the fact that the most outstanding characters he has played have had Nigerian names (Simon Adebisi in Oz and Mr. Eko in Lost), his Nigerian background is obviously something he is proud of. His character in Lost was originally tagged as Emeka but Triple A, as he is known, convinced the producers of the show to rename it Eko adding the “Mr.” for more effect. Agbaje was born in Islington, London to Nigerian parents who had gone to the UK for work and study. At the tender age of six months, he was given up to the care of foster parents who raised him well into his teens. He got regular visits from his birth parents though and was sometimes shuttled home to Nigerian for visits of his own. The circumstance of his upbringing is the focus of a current movie project he is working on. In the post-World War II era, most African migrants to Britain often left their kids to be raised by usually poor white families for reasons related to study and work and also so that their kids could be better integrated into the British society. This process was known as “farming”. Ultimately, Agbaje’s foster parents had a total of fiftyfour (54) kids farmed out to them. According to him, the movie is aimed at throwing light on a very important

period in Black-British history. And personally for him, it is about ‘the lack of, search for, and ultimately the finding of oneself.’ Before going into acting, Agbaje earned a Master in Law from the London’s prestigious King’s College University. His first turn on the camera was in Mary J. Blige’s 1993 video of the song Love no Limit. He had his motion picture debut in Congo (1995) as Captain Munro’s guide Kahega. From there, he featured in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) as Hitu, The Mummy Returns (2001) as Lok-Nah, the Fifty Cent biopic Get Rich or Die Trying as Majestic and of course Bourne Identity amongst others. His most recent movie role is as Heavy Duty in G. I. Joe: the Rise of the Cobra. He has also expressed interest in playing the role of Black Panther, a Marvel comic character in its movie adaptation. However, Agbaje is better known for his TV roles especially his critically acclaimed role in HBO prison series Oz as the criminal Simon Adebisi for which he got two NAACP Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He played the role of Mr. Eko in Lost starting from the second season but towards the end of the third season and following the death of his birth parents in 2005, asked to be written off of the series. Current talk is that Mr. Eko may make a re-appearance in the show’s final season. In 2009 he guest-starred in Monk, a police-procedural comedy-drama on the USA network, playing the role of a Nigerian widower. Agbaje has often displayed his pride in his Nigerian roots, insisting that his characters be given Nigerian names.

Although off-screen he speaks with a noticeably British accent, he employs a pronounced Nigerian accent in the portrayal of his characters. In a recent interview, he talked about how he tries to keep as close to his roots as possible. He often returns home to Nigeria and wherever he is, he makes his own Nigerian meal, using recipes learned from his mother. The fact that Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje has embraced his heritage,is something worthy of praise. He is Nigeria’s own true Hollywood hero. One can hardly wait for more films and TV shows with the unmistakable “Nigerian accent” and sometime that Yoruba that does not fail to fill us with pride.

Interview with
MARTIN MURPHY Play-writer and director, Martin Murphy is the Man on the hot seat. In this interview he talks about growing up, his new play Manor and why its a must see.
Side View 38
ripping out a man’s eye. Stud who is the main character in Manor has a similar logic to this although Stud is far more charismatic than the doorman I based him on.
I grew up in Holloway in North London. I think it was nice when my mum moved there but our road got taken over by drug dealers and there were quite a few shootings. We moved when my little sister was born because it didn’t feel that safe for a little girl, I think it’s got nicer now though. What is it like coming from an acting family? I wouldn’t really say I come from an acting family background. My grandfather Brian Murphy is one of the best comic actors alive today and he has been a useful source of advice, but my parents work in different areas of Theatre.
The first play I wrote was Manor, I’ve had lots of other stuff produced since writing it, but it’s taken a long time to get fully running in town which I feel it deserves. What inspired Manor? I studied Drama & Creative writing. By the end of the course, I was a bit sick of the formulaic way they teach you to create work. I wanted to write something completely different to what you’d expect to see in a play. I wanted to write something that grabs you off the street, punches you in the face, gives you a blowjob and then throws you back outside. Were the characters modeled after anyone specifically? I was in an adaptation of Kevin Sampson’s novel “Outlaws” a few years back and so hung out with a lot of doormen for the part. One bouncer in particular I found fascinating for his near psychotic logic. If someone had a fight or did a line in a club when he worked the door he took it as a personal insult. His reactions to this included
How do you want the audience to respond to Manor? I see Manor as a very dark comedy so I enjoy the nights where it gets the laughs. Because the play is so brutal I understand there are evenings where audiences don’t feel comfortable laughing out loud but it’s nice hearing line’s like “ Now you can’t just spunk up on a lettuce and call it a Caesar salad’ repeated as people drink in the bar after. Why is Manor a go see? Any fan of the film Sexy Beast will love Manor. David Scinto (Writer. Sexy Beast & 44 Inch Chest) has been a massive support to me in getting Manor on and is hosting talks with me after selected performances. What is your style on a regular day? My style off set is I suppose is a bit like a cartoon character. I tend to always wear the same thing. I nearly always wear blue turned up 501 Levi’s a black leather jacket, black leather chelsea boots and probably a Bowie t-shirt. What is your favorite food? It would have to be steak and fried potato chips with a bottle of nice red wine. Food wise I’m nearly entirely carnivorous. What is the most unusual thing about you? I wouldn’t necessarily say I have an unusual thing about me but I do have a wide range of heroes, from the likes of Morrissey & Bill Hicks to Teddy Sheringham & Sarah Harding.
You can catch me on a sunday performing at the Soho Theatre Bar as part of my comedy rock cabaret act Pistol and Jack, check Soho Theatre site for info. We’ve had great acts like Scott capurro so always a fun Sunday. Right now I am working on adapting Manor for the screen.

LisaRaye McCoy
Interview by Tinu Adesugba Photography by D’Andre Michael Accomplished actress, model and reality tv star, LisaRaye McCoy is definitely a very busy woman and inspiration to young women. LisaRaye talks to us about her reality show, being a single mum and why she loves wearing white.
Side View 40
We know you are an accomplished actress, how did you first get into acting? My introduction to acting came through modelling, I would do fashion shows and then I graduated into ad campaigns. I loved the attention, but I never thought big screen. A friend introduced me to a casting agent. I went for an audition and came out with the lead. After that I decided to move to LA but I did not get an agent or manager but it just felt right to be there at that point. I started doing videos and Ice Cube saw me in Tupac’s last video ‘Toss It Up’. I took a couple of meetings for the movie Player’s Club and got the lead and the rest is history.
All of Us is a sitcom that was a huge hit? What was your experience filming ? Its was awesome. The chemistry between Duane Martin was great on screen and also the chemistry between Khamani Griffin who played my son, was amazing. The stability of having a hit show was great especially for me as a black woman in Hollywood. I also used the opportunity as training for the next job and during that period I did Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah. It was an amazing experience.
Looking back did you ever think it would be such an impact, especially with single parents? Absolutely, I think it was perfect timing for a show with that type of story line to go on television. Now there are a lot of single parenting going on. Not only single mothers but also single fathers. All of Us portrayed a positive light on which a kid can grow up healthy in a single parent environment.
A lot of people have been glued to your reality TV program Lisa Raye: The real McCoy- What was the decision to have a reality tv series? After my divorce there were all these perceptions about me and I thought why not tell my story my own way. It was also a business decision. Coming back from the island (Lisa was married to the premier of Turks and Caicos)I found out that reality tv had totally taken over. So I thought ‘if you cannot beat them join them’ and in doing that I get my story across to the my fans
How did you feel having your daughter Kai share this experience with you? My daughter is not new to the cameras. She has been
involved In my career from the beginning . Its also a chance for her to tell her story coming from a single parent home.
Your known for being very confident, do you think that comes from experience? I’m not as confident as people think I am. Some people think I just walk into a room and dominate it but it’s not like that. I’m a mature woman and I’ve grown to understand what works for me. I’m happy with myself. I don’t believe in going under the knife or extreme dieting. If I have a few cellulite here and there then so be it. I’m also not afraid to grow old. I feel I look good in my maturity than I ever have. What advice will you give to young women struggling with confidence issues? I think society puts a lot of pressure on women nowadays and it has to be up to us to stand tall and correct that. Especially when it comes to the issue of weight. Even when I look at myself and the movie I’m currently filming with Stacey Dash and Tracey London for VH1, I’m the more curvaceous one and I really don’t mind, I’m happy and that’s what counts. Women need to be happy with themselves. You’ve been wearing white for 8 years? Why white? (Laughs) You know, I just absolutely love wearing white because it makes me feel clean and fresh. It’s really nothing other than that.
There is a huge movie industry in Africa with Nollywood being the third biggest. Will you ever consider coming to Nigeria and acting in a Nollywood movie? Please could I? I love Africa and it’s something I would love to do. Although I have not being to Nigeria I visited South Africa and it was amazing. The people were so nice and receptive of me and I was so surprised they knew who I was.
Give us a typical day with LisaRaye? I don’t have typical days. I’m always working so I’m always busy. I am currently filming in Atlanta for VH1. So when I’m not filming I’m promoting my show Lisa Raye: The Real McCoy. So in a day I’ll have promos, interviews, hosting radio shows. I don’t have time for anything, but I’m grateful for all the work because I get to do what I love.
Side View INTERVIEW
How did you get into the film industry? I have been in the TV/film industry since I was 14 years old. I started by joining small drama clubs and groups, then going on to attend drama schools such as Sylvia Young and Anna Shears. You’ve attended Drama School to further your career, how would you describe your time there? I went to drama school for 3 years. It was a lot of hard work and probably the hardest time of my life. I had to put a lot of myself and at times I was emotionally drained. But all in all it was a positive experience.
Danielle Isaie
Interview by Tinu Adesugba
She is certainly an actress to watch for in 2010; having been cast in numerous shows on the small screen like BBC’s Casualty. Talented, charming and super enthusiastic - she invited us to find out more about her future plans. SideView Introduces Danielle Isaie.
What is your proudest moment in your career so far? The proudest moment so far is probably when I was cast as the character Felisha in a film I did for ITV called “Caught In A Trap”. It was my first film. I’m very proud of that. You have appeared in quite a few TV shows here in the UK, would you like to break into the movies as well and what other roles would you like to play? I would definitely love to be involved in film. It is very difficult because there are not as many films being produced in the UK . My plan is to get a few leading roles in T.V here first, then move to Hollywood and break into film when I feel ready. If the opportunity comes earlier I will welcome it with open arms. Ultimate Ambition? My ultimate ambition would be to be an accomplished black actress in Hollywood and be recognized by my peers. How would you describe your personal style? It really depends on how I feel. I have a very diverse wardrobe. In the summer time I tend to wear more floral prints and show my girly side. In the winter I opt for a more grungy style with oversized cardigans and skinny jeans. Either way I like to keep it simple and elegant Designer or high street brands? Definitely high Street, Top shop and Miss Selfridge are my favorite high street shops. Sometimes I splurge on the odd designer piece. I usually will mix and match high street brands with designer pieces.

The most expensive piece of clothing I ever bought was.. A Gucci bag £1200! Clothing probably an Armani dress £580. What is your favorite piece of clothing? Black and electric blue tartan skirt with pleats from Punky Fish! All time favorite movie? I love E.T, that’s my favorite of all time. Oh and also Bad boys, Troy and 300. How old were you when you had your first kiss? I was 14 years old when I had my first kiss. It was outside my front door when my boyfriend at the time was walking me home from school. Have you ever been chatted up by a celebrity? Funny enough quite a few times! The one that sticks out the most was JoJo from Jodici. We met in a club years ago and he was trying to flirt with me, I asked him to sing for me. It was so funny. My most embarrassing moment was .... When I was walking down the stairs at a nightclub a few years ago and I was getting quite a lot of attention, so I played on it and started to do a stylish catwalk kind of walk down the stairs and low and behold, I tripped on the bottom of my long, flowing dress, a friend had to help me up. I just wanted to stay down! What do you love to hate? Rainy days! What is your favorite holiday destination? The Bahamas, I have only been once but I really loved the beaches and the food, It was AMAZING Who is the most famous person you have ever met? Reece Witherspoon, I worked with her on Vanity Fair back in 2004, she is a really lovely person. Tell us a strange fact about yourself I can separate my little toe completely from my other toes!!!

Side View’s Top 5 trends in films
Onscreen-off-screen, fashion and Hollywood are two inseparable friends. Here are the top five movies that have done the runways one over by setting the trend in terms of what we buy and wear.
By Kay Kay Omar Leather, sunglasses and Matrix Sunglasses come and go. With each fashion revolution, they make a comeback either as an ultra-cool accessory, exaggerated bohemian or nerdy nerd. Sunglasses made their biggest comeback with 1999’s Matrix and at the height of ultra-cool. Matrix not only brought back the sunglasses. It was responsible for the reinvention of the Trench coat or (overcoat)- in leather!- turning it from a must-have for all would-be Inspector Gadgets turned into a musthave for all would-be fashionistas. The movie went a long way to also inspire the leather movement. Between 1999 and 2000, everyone had something leathery in their wardrobe, but mostly faux for the sake of political-correctness. Felicity’s leather cat-suit was a major inspiration for designers that year. This led to its remake in other unappealing materials, such as denim, which did not do so well for the look. We all still preferred it in leather and on Felicity’s toned body. Same as the dark-dark (black) sunglasses; off-screen no one could pull off that air of mystery and edginess like Neo. Men in skirts and sandals (Gladiators, 300 and Clash of the Titans) The gladiator sandals (Jesus sandals) first made an entry into the fashionista’s wardrobe after the release of the Gladiator (We who are about to die salute you). It got another boost with the release of 300 (Spartans! Awooh!). Now, with Clash of the Titans (Release the Kraken!), the gladiator sandals’ popularity as favored footwear especially for the ultra-casual chic fashionista still remains undisputed. Worthy of note is the fact that these sandals were worn in the movies mostly by men. One would expect this look to be translated off-screen. But as the whole total Greco- Roman requires donning a skirt or underpants (in the case of 300) and like most trendy stuff, gladiator sandals has more or less being relegated to feminine fashion. Men being fashion-reticent beings have long since chosen, after its invention, to remain in the trousers era. Even Ralph Lauren in the early to mid
nineties could not get them to wear skirts. However, guys going for the bohemian look are known to don them with shorts. As for the skirts and underpants, short black leather skirts followed the Gladiator movie. And after 300, singers like Madonna and Lady Gaga saw absolutely nothing wrong in performing onstage in underpants that looked suspiciously like something they nicked from their grandmas.
Sex and the City: Manholo Blahniks, anyone? Granted, before Sex and the City became a movie (twice) it was a TV show. But it was a TV show that popularized high fashion. Prior to S&C, we were all doing fine on our platform shoes and in our retro boots. Then came Carrie Bradshaw with her Manholo Blahniks and all any woman could dream of was a pair of six-inch heels and a sprained ankle. Before Carrie Bradshaw, heels had more or less been relegated to stripper joints. Nothing like a good TV show/movie for that image boost, right? Pregnant Teenagers, Blame it on Juno! Angelina Jolie made adopting kids and getting pregnant at the drop of a hat fashionable. But for teenage pregnancy, blame it on 2007’s Juno. After the movie release, the media was awash with the story of some high school kids- in America- who had suddenly decided that getting pregnant was something cool. After all, if Juno could get away with lobbing a huge belly around the school hallway, why not them? Of course, what most people fail to observe about movies is that the results are usually different in real life. While Juno’s pregnancy did not lead to much drama in the school, these high school teenagers caused an up-roar in their country!
The Avatar Effect Before there were blue people, there was blue jewelry. In fact, there was a time in the late nineties when beaded turquoise ethnic jewellery was the hot item. Now, thanks to the blue people from Pandora (Avatar, 2009), ethnic jewelry is making a big comeback- feathers, beads and semi-precious metals in intricate designs. Not only that, Avatar is the inspiration for the new Nike Air Max. Its colours are reminiscent of the ethereal Pandoran forest. However, we are hoping that blue body paint and tails do not find their way onto the fashion’s high streets. There is a reason, after all, that the movie was made in CGI. Not all things look good on humans.

Summer Beauty By Alison Cameron With summer finally upon us, and the sun is peeping through the clouds, it’s time to detox our makeup bags in favour of lighter, fresher colours and products that will see us through a season of sunny BBQ’s, afternoons in the park and holidays on the beach.Summer makeup should be fresh, fun and pretty in the day. Oily combination skins should swap their matte liquid foundations for a powder foundation compact. Studio Fix powder plus foundation by MAC Cosmetics, £19, gives a medium buildable coverage with a matte finish in an easy to carry compact perfect for chucking in your bag and fantastic for touch ups. Dry skins should check out Studio Moisture Tint, £19, also by MAC Cosmetics. With SPF 15, this lightweight gel formula gives sheer to medium coverage that leaves the skin soft and hydrated. Bright colours worn sparingly can look amazing in the summer light and bang on trend. Pick your favourite colour eye shadow by cult brand Inglot www. inglotmalta.com. They have a dizzying selection of awesome colours. Choose a shimmer texture (mattes are slightly harder to blend whilst shimmer flatters the skin) and apply it sparingly at first then build up the colour to your desired intensity, finish off with mascara (ditch the eyeliner for a fresher look) bronzer and a natural lip gloss to keep the focus on the eyes, Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes, £14, are the best for sheer long lasting summer ready colour. Stay stunning but safe this summer with Sun Protection! Even if you are a woman of colour, all skins are susceptible to sun damage. Darker skins may not burn in the conventional sense but can be irreparably damaged in the sun, leading to wrinkles and dry skin giving it a mottled appearance. Minesol Triple Defense SPF30 spray lotion by ROC, £12.99, has a lightweight milky formula that sinks into the skin and is perfect for the face. For sultry summer nights experiment with bold colour on the lips which can look fantastic against skin that has been kissed by the sun. Perfect brows Simple guide to getting perfect eyebrows By Imelda Ladebo The eyes are a prominent facial feature that people are normally drawn to and the shape of your eyebrows can draw even more attention to your eyes, making it a strong beauty focal point. Perfectly shaped eyebrows tend to highlight and enhance any look you have on, so say good bye to thin or shapeless eyebrows and welcome the beauty of full perfectly shaped brows. In order to accomplish nicely shaped eyebrows, it is essential that you follow your natural eyebrow shape and work around it, without altering it completely. We will assess three major techniques of eyebrow shaping by highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each.
Sometimes these methods do not create that perfect brow shape you are after, but fear not, there are ways of filling in those brows to create that rich, thick and perfectly arched eyebrow.
EYEBROW THREADING
Using a small angle brush and the brow powder, create definition to your brows after filling it in with the pencil. A matte eye shadow 1 shade darker than your brows can also fill in as a brow powder. Try Laura Mercier’s Brow Powder Duo (£18.50).
Results last longer than other eyebrow hair removal techniques, with hair taking up to three or four weeks to grow back. It produces a more precise shape compared to other techniques, making it more likely for you to achieve the perfect shape you are after. TWEEZING/ PLUCKING
This is a very convenient method of hair removal that can be carried out anytime. It involves removing only one hair at a time, giving you control over what hairs are removed from your eyebrows. Can be used to neaten the eyebrows by plucking only the unwanted hairs at the bottom of the brows It is quite painful and can sometimes lead to eyebrow re-shaping especially if the wrong hairs are plucked.
M.A.C’s Brow Set (£10) is a brush-on gel that grooms and slicks the eyebrows into shape without flaking or stiffening. It’s also great for adding that extra glow to the eyebrows, and keeping them in shape all day long. N.B Always select a soft pencil which matches the shade of your brows.
Brow Definer by The body shop (£7.50) is perfect for filling in your brows using light, short feathery strokes to help create a more natural look.
Brow & Liner Kit, £10, The Body Shop
WAXING
Hair takes a while to grow back–because hair is removed from the root- meaning your shape lasts for quite a while. The ideal shape you are after can be achieved through waxing and less time is spent on maintenance. Hair tends to grow back finer and softer, leaving your eyebrows stubble free.

Necklace Q & A Each month Side View Fashion Editor Ronke Fashola answers your fashion questions. This month Ronke gives fashion tips and advice about the perfect statement necklace.
Q: I’m getting married soon and have brought the most amazing satin dress for my wedding day. It’s very simple and has a low neck drop so I need a wow necklace to really bring it together. My bridesmaids are wearing a deep purple so it would be nice to have something which works colour wise to tie their colours together. I want something different, not the usual styles which are offered for brides. What can you recommend? A: This amazing necklace from Freedom is a true statement necklace. Adorned with rhinestones this necklace gives that impact you’ll be looking for when worn with a simple dress. The colours are ideal and will link in perfectly with the ones you have used for your wedding/bridesmaid. Pick out the main colour of the necklace by purchasing some shoes to compliment and finish off the outfit.
Freedom necklace £100
Q: I’ve been looking for a necklace to update my work outfit. I have to wear a suit to work most days but want to inject some of my personality into it. I normally shop at Evans but struggle with how to accessorize. Have you seen anything in their range, which you can recommend?
Evans £25
A: Injecting some of your personality into work wear is much easier today as most high street stores offer some fabulous styles which you can mix and match for affordable prices. Try adding this necklace to a plain turquoise or pink shirt to compliment the coloured beads used in the necklace. Instead of wearing a jacket add a long line cardigan over your shirt, preferably a colour not black and this creates a great smart and trendy outfit for the office.
£39 Mint Velvet
Q: I’ve been looking for a really fashionable chain style necklace for ages but the ones I keep finding all look the same. I want something really exciting. Can you suggest anything? A: This necklace from Mint Velvet is ideal as it has the chain feature you have been looking for. It’s also has been combined with grey fabric to make it look more casual and funky! Ideal for wearing with some chino’s, and drape style tops. This will add a bit of rock glamour to a sophisticated army outfit.
Wallis necklace £ 35
Q; I have a birthday coming up and am going for a family dinner. My dress is metallic silver and really fitted! I don’t want to wear gold or a plain silver necklace, what other options can I go for? A: This necklace is an amazing piece of jewellery to invest in. It’s a true statement necklace, which you can wear on other occasions after your birthday, and for only £35

The Wedding Makeup Expert Asks: What kind of Bride are you? by Bisi E., Bridal Beauty Expert / Professional Makeup Artist You are engaged! Congratulations! Do you occasionally catch yourself daydreaming of your wedding day? Does your dream involve beautiful, fairytale scenery full of love, yet classy and elegant like you? Ahhh…you are what I call, The Romantic Bride! With romance comes class, elegance and purity-a refined quality of precision, detail and enhancement of all things natural; that is your beauty. So it is a no-brainer why the romantic bride wears her makeup not only flawlessly beautiful, but also light and natural to remain true to her beauty. To create the perfect look for the romantic bride, note that you need to have the right tools such as the highly recommended Crystal-Eyez Professional Makeup Brushes to achieve the perfect coverage and finish. Marriage needs a proper foundation, and so does your face. Start by applying foundation on a well prepped face. Keep in mind that in creating this look, it is important to keep the foundation light, thin or in other words, weightless. This way, the skin remains visible so the groom is able to see his bride blushing right through the transparent makeup without any distraction. The CrystalEyez Foundation and Powder brushes are the perfect tools to create a flawless skin. Shimmer, sparkle and blush. Shimmery light pinks, silvers or grays, and earth tone creams, oranges, and browns are the perfect eye shadow colors for creating dreamy romantic eyes. Let your smile complement your eyes by highlighting your cheek bones with a blush color in the same family as your eye shadow. Using the CrystalEyez Blending and Blush Brush will result in unnoticeable transitions to give your beautiful eyes and cheeks a subtle spark and a natural glow. Bat your lashes and wink at him! Your lashes should be curled and your eyes lined very close to your lash line. If you must use false lashes, make sure they look natural and are applied neatly and as close to your lash line as possible. Use the Crystal-Eyez 3-in-1 Lash Comb, Wand and Brush to comb your lashes to perfection. Raise a brow…Your brows speak a thousand words as they frame your face. Get them professionally groomed a week prior to the big day. On your wedding day, be careful not to have your brows drawn on, but filled in lightly with short strokes in the direction of your hair growth. Use the Crystal-Eyez Angled Precision Brush and a brow powder or pencil in a color close to your hair color for rich brows that look elegant and most importantly, natural.
Are you off daydreaming again? Well at this point you are probably on cloud nine, but be sure to remember to have your Crystal-Eyez On-D-Go Touch Up Kit with you on your big day. This compact kit includes the important quick-fix touch-up essentials you’ll need to maintain that flawless look that will keep you elegantly beautiful, and of course, a truthfully romantic bride all day long.
Finally, blow him a kiss. Your lipstick should complement your bouquet. To create the perfect lips, use the Crystal-Eyez Lip Brush for accuracy and precision. Give your lips a rich boost of shine by using one of the Crystal-Eyez Lip Glosses in the same family color as your lip stick. Crystal-Eyez Lip Glosses come in a variety of beautiful colors, each with a built-in precision lip brush for a precise and easy application. Now with these irresistible lips, let’s hope your groom can hold off long enough ‘till “You may now kiss your bride!”

Reviews by Carly Florentine I Am Love (lo Sono L’Amore) Seduced by a poster, In love with Tilda, ending in existential consternation.
I would give this Italian production 5 *’s on the strength of its advertising campaign alone. From the moment I saw the alluring posters; with its high-fashion style photography and powerful Persian Rose Pink typography to display its curious title, I was spellbound. They were works of art in themselves which lit up my comings and goings on the underground. It was hardly necessary for me to even watch the movie as I would have been happy to merely look at the poster all day long. But of course the casting of the queen of cool, ‘Tilda Swinton’ persuaded me it was compulsory viewing as though she looks gorgeous in the poster, she is an actress rather than model and one of the finest at that. Furthermore the trailer lent to the air of intrigue surrounding this release as it revealed nothing yet remained deeply fascinating. Top marks there as ambiguity is nearly always appealing as it has such possibility. So after all this piquing of interest, did the main act disappoint? The opening scene depicted a snow-caked urban terrain to a dramatic classical music score and closed on snowflakes descending upon a luminescent palatial abode. Once inside the elite interiors of this mansion, a sense of disquietude is conveyed by intrusive camera angles and many an exchange of meaningful looks. The mysterious concealment of the storyline from the trailer intuitively I felt was deliberate and quite rightly so. The action of the film is neither eminently exciting nor remotely original, its structure based on familiar themes
of the the gilded cages of the bourgoisie, the eroding of traditional values and one woman’s awakening and undoing through passion. But I think as an impartial observer, one ought to know nothing of the plot to enjoy an untainted cinematic experience, especially in this suspenseful operatic piece that hints at the serpentine forces that come into play. Therefore I care not to talk about the narrative of the film but instead on its execution. Luca Guadagnino’s film could be described as a glossy tragedy, with its highly stylised rendering of events, at times understated, at others over the top, it is collectively nothing short of a masterpiece. The musical score is thrilling, illboding and rather wonderful and the acting exceptional. Tilda displays her customary brilliance, her Italian is impeccable and her character’s couture is divine. This spectacle benefits from the grand Milanese architecture and is truly elegantly shot. ‘I Am Love’ is a surreal and sublime sensory overload. Speaking of love, the character of Edoardo Recchi Jnr(and potentially his real life counterpart) is a worthy replacement of all his predecessors as the ideal object of my affections. Epic, melodramatic and subtly mesmerising, this is an aesthetic treat for the subconscious. Comparable to Brideshead Revisited, in its ostentatious setting and philosophical overtones and perhaps even more reminiscent of Madame Bovary, ultimately as a package it was a unique cinematic offering, exceptionally clever in its coy suggestions to the peculiarities of existence. It provides us with an ingenious and imperceptible understanding of what it feels like to lose the plot of who we are as the escalating confusion of the final sequence is unravelled, runs parallels to the protagonist’s grasp that one’s profession, location and lifestyle are transient things that can be forgotten. Then the terrifying dismantling of the comfort of our identities confronts us with the pure ‘being’ aspect of our true natures. This is really worth seeing especially for lovers of beauty and the profound. It reminds us that we are not the roles we adopt, the styles we affect or the people we pretend to be but instead and quite simply, we are love.

Top 5 hotels in films
by Fred Nwonwu
1
The Fontainebleau Miami Beach The Fontainebleau Miami Beach or the Fontainebleau Hotel; one of the most historically and architecturally significant hotels on Miami Beach, has featured in many notable movies like Scarface (1983), Goldfinger (1964), The Bodyguard (1992), Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach, and The Specialist.
3
In the Woody Allen-movie, Bananas, the hotel is referenced when the ex- dictator Vargas flees his fictitious country San Marcos in a plane and calls the Fontainebleau to reserve a room.
Grandhotel Pupp The 228-room Grandhotel Pupp, Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czechs Republic, plays host to the tension and provides a stunning back drop for 2006 Bond film ‘Casino Royale’. The movie directed by Martin Campbell stars Daniel Craig as MI6 agent James Bond on his first assignment. Fresh from preventing a terrorist attack at Miami International Airport, Bond falls for Vesper Lynd, the treasury agent assigned to provide the money he needs to foil a high-stakes poker tournament organised by Le Chiffre in Montenegro at Le Casino Royale. Pierce Brosnan fans threatened to boycott the film to protest the selection of Daniel Craig to portray James Bond.

Mountain Lake Hotel Mountain Lake Conservancy & Hotel Giles County near Pembroke, Virginia, in the United States is the location for what has been described as ‘the biggest chick film of all time’ 1987’s Dirty Dancing. The film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach in a coming of age drama that documents a teenaged woman’s relationship with a dance instructor. The film is directed by Emile Ardolino and the extensive dance scenes were choreographed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), including the finale has been described as “the most goosebump-inducing dance scene in movie history”. Jennifer Grey, at 27, was 10 years older than the character of Baby. During her audition, she had 5 minutes to prove she could play younger, and that she had the moves for the role.

BELLAGIO The 50 story, AAA Five Diamond Luxury award winning Hotel and Casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in the Paradise area of unincorporated Clark County, Nevada, USA is the location for the 2001 remake of 1960’s classic film ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ for which Hollywood’s A-list turned up for. Clooney and Pitt replace Sinatra and Dean. A collection of Hollywood A-list: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, and Steven Soderbergh, Don Cheadle etc.

THE TIMBERLINE LODGE Most people assume that 1980’s ‘the shinning’ was shot on location at the Timberline lodge on Mount Hood, Oregon. Actually, most of the psychological horror film, starring Jack Nicholson as a writer that slowly goes mad and Shelley Duval as his wife, was shot at soundstages at EMI Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England and only a few exterior shots of the actual hotel was used in the movie. Still, the movie’s popularity borrowed off the hotel that still caters to high-end vacations and weddings. The Timberline Lodge requested the film’s director Stanley Kubrick change the sinister Room 217 of King’s novel to 237, so customers would not avoid the real room 217.

HOW SAFE ARE YOUR SEX TOYS?
What influences you when you’re buying Size? Shape? Vibration sex toys? strength and speed?
Do you consider what it’s made of and how safe it is for you to use? With the ever growing popularity of organic food and toilet- ries and our increasing awareness that what we put into our bodies has long term effects, why don’t we consider this with our sex toys? Over the last six months I’ve been shocked to learn about the gamble that we are all unknowingly taking with our health through our widespread use of phthalates. Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are phthalate esters formed from dibasic phthalic acid and various organic alcohols. Their main use is as a plasticizer to make a hard plastic, often PVC, soft and flexible. Phthalates have been so widely used in industry, and even in medicines and health products, that they have become ubiquitous in modern day life. Phthalates have been linked to childhood asthma and allergies. They are also widely believed to be endocrine disruptors, which means that they interfere with the body’s chemical messenger system by mimicking the effects of hormones. It is believed that some phthalates are anti- androgens that cause problems in male sexual development and that exposure to phthalates by pregnant women carrying male foetuses could lead to emasculation of the resultant child. As such The European Union (1999) and The USA (2008) prohibit the use of certain phthalate esters above 0.1% by weight in children’s toys. Here at Pomegranate we believe there should be similar regulations covering the use of phthalates in sex toys, which are used so intimately. Phthalate filled sex toys are cheap and easy to manufacture, but we believe they have no place on shop shelves.
Pomegranate Erotic Boutique is working to reconnect sex and sensuality by providing safe-to-use sex toys, luxurious lingerie and accessories to enthral. We partner with local businesses wherever possible and are committed to donating 10% of profit to charity, 5% to Age UK and 5% to Refuge. We also campaign to raise awareness of phthalate use in the sex toy industry. Follow us twitter.com/PomegranateEB
A new breed of manufacturers use silicone for their sex toys. Silicone is nonporous so nothing is transferred from toy to you and there’s nowhere for germs to go mak- ing cleaning and sterilisation easy. Silicone affords all the benefits of a ‘jelly’ vibrator (transfer of the vibrations, ergonomically designed shapes, attractive colours) and removes all the health risks. Borosilicate glass has been used in the medical and sci- entific fields for many years. Borosilicate glass sex toys are nonporous, easily cleaned and quickly change tempera- ture to bring hot and cold sensations into sex toy based play. As with all glass, chipping can occur, but with careful storage and regular inspections glass sex toys are a safe alternative to phthalate filled sex toys.Wooden toys have also been used for thousands of years and are becoming more popular today. These are coated with a protective sealant or food safe varnish to prevent splinters and provide a smooth finish.
Many popular ‘jelly’ type sex toys are known for their strong smell. This is basically the vinyl of the vibrator off- gassing the large amounts of phthalates contained within it; the stronger the smell the higher the phthalate level. Yet there are easily available, affordable and good quality alternatives available.

Reviews by Carly Florentine The Last Days of Decadence Drinking to a delightful decade Admit it, you wish you could have gone to one of Gatsby’s parties or rolled around with the Bright Young Things. For the elegant portions of the edge-enamoured East End, a home has been found to persist in living the dream. On Shoreditch High Street there lays a boutique club that performs an ode to the 1920’s. With an Art-Deco feel and prohibition style interiors, as well as classic cocktails including my personal favourite ‘Brandy Alexander’, this chic venue is at the pinnacle of a love affair with the times of yore.
Saturdays at LDOD is full to the brim of eccentricity, excess and the social whirl. The club offers a peppering of fabulousness, a crowd of pretty people who stay out ‘til jolly late and alcoholinfused cocktail teas (served hot and in teapots). As well as avant-sweethearts, all posing and proud and fleeting glamour and alcohol abuse of every kind, they put on a fine show of entertainment, with an array of performances including live music, theatre and burlesque cabarets (check listings for specifics). Of course Decadence is about more than just over-indulgence; it was associated with late 19th century fin de siècle writers and was more recently an old friend of mine.
Now a socialite of some repute, who has attached himself to every interesting scene from the 60’s to the present day’ featuring friendships with Marlene Dietrich and Andy Warhol believes the key to happiness is to never do nostalgia. This is a particularly impressive feat considering the grandeur of his past. Well for those who are so modern, they seem to have no choice but to go retro and are not pining for their own glory days but recreating ones they never had the chance to experience, I don’t think said socialite would disapprove at all. It is instead the embodiment of The Libertines’ lyric “These are the good old days”. During the height of my infatuation with this movement I formed an art collective and hosted a multi-arts soiree under the moniker ‘Devoted to Dorian Gray’ courtesy of Decadence Events. Furthermore I took a course on it, literally as opposed to metaphorically, yet I was still partial to the old cliché of preferring absinthe to abstinence and dreamed of a noirish Montmartre.
One can assume that this consort of chaps and dames have read “À rebours” or merely have the style and wish to flaunt it. Comprised of dressed up darlings, with vintage clutches of debauchery, the “Last Days of Decadence” is full of shiny rather than sordid offerings. I would highly recommend this night for the beautiful and the damned and all teaintoxicates. You will have Jazz, you will have wine, and you will have fun!

Issue 6 release Photography: Venus Raven Fashion by Victoria Hill
party
On the 1st April, full of tidings of spring, SideView hosted ‘The Music Issue’ release party in contemporary new North London venue Faaji hosted by Ada Ogunkeye. After some last minute dashing, pretty preparatory details, sound checking and paranoid panics that the photographer wasn’t going to make it, the cabaret commenced shortly after six. The evenings guest’s got to witness the wonders at work when our team of professional stylists and makeup artists beautified our already beautiful models. Then Karl Lake (who arrived fashionably on time in the end, as opposed to super early), our leading photographer, immortalised them as they struck a pose. Rolls and rolls of film were disposed of, there were high cheekbones galore, lashings of mascara but not a diva in sight. The photo-shoot provided an opportunity to see behind the lens of the industry and satisfied the cravings of many a curious cat. All the stunning designs, were vying for attention on the rails, in what was a glam-packed wardrobe, luckily our resident Stylist Victoria Hill was on hand to keep the chaos at bay and did a fantastic job.

The models adopted a variety of guises over the course of the evening, from the ships ahoy start with the nautical and nice offerings from Sailor Girls & Gents showcase. This was a brilliant introduction to the night ahead and brought us all the fun of the sea from the comfort of a candlelit lounge. This was followed by the exotic pioneering trend of regal Afro-Bohemian Chic, then to the Manhattan inspired looks in the concluding theme ‘Sex and the City’. To allow our marvellous mannequins and frantically overworked fashion staff a moment to breath, we had made arrangements for some excellent entertainment in the interim.

First up we had the dynamic vocals and expert guitar techniques of Gaz Twist to delight our audiences. Gaz has played with other fine performers of our times such as KT Tunstall, Pete Doherty and Georgie Fame (!). Furthermore he has toured the US and is currently working on a debut album with the band Mr Twist - working with ‘Editors’ producer Gavin Monaghan, which came out in May 2010. He is also recording and producing several artists in his North London studio. He also had a wonderful stage presence and was also a thoroughly nice chap. Shortly after we had the good-fortune to present, Hendrix and The Doors inspired rock outfit, Komla. Fusing soul and funk and psychedelic elements into the mix sang with Komla’s velveteen and impassioned vocals and Kelpie’s almost childlike enthusiasm as he played his guitar with joyful abandon. They electrified the mood and we were very grateful to have them as part of our event. Lastly but of course not least we were touched when soulful songstress ‘Delilah’ arrived, unswayed by her below par wellness and sore throat to honour her commitment to Side View and contribute to the charitable cause. Too passionate to be dissuaded she took to the mic and wowed us with her beautiful voice. Particularly brilliant was Dj Joe Jamato who catered

for every musical taste and chose tracks to perfectly fit with imagery of the shoot. Event Co-ordinator, Carly Florentine was ecstatic when one of his first requests was permission to play a few Libertine’s tracks to celebrate their getting back together, any old however arbitrary acquaintances of hers know that is literally music to her ears. They spent much of the evening in cahoots over the playlist which was thoroughly appreciated by all. It was wonderful to have Joe on board, he’s had a long and successful career, starting at the age of 12. After forming and playing with several bands he ended up buying his first computer. From that moment he started to be seriously involved with djing and producing electronic music .He made his first moves as a dj playing chill out music and drum and bass when these genres were still unknown and underground. In 2001 he moved to London where he set up his own dance record label Logicalnoise with 3 different genres involved chill out, drum and bass and techno house. As a producer he has remixed artists such as Kate Bush and Tina Turner. We also consider him to be a serious contender to SideView’s Stylish Glasses Wearer of the Year. While much has been mentioned of all the visual and aural treats we provided on the night, as is standard, we had goodies to satisfy all of the senses. To look after the nutritional needs of all attendees, we had some flavoursome african nibbles, such as Faaji Beef and the cutely titled puff-puff. We also had dainty little fairy cakes dotted around and thanks to our sponsors of Sainsbury’s and The Body Shop, we had goody bags for everyone. So it was all easter-eggs all round! The Music Issue Release Party was organised to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and we are deeply thankful to all the models, all the musicians, the manager of Faaji, our lovely sponsors and to everyone who came.
