A HUMBLE ORIGIN

Through initiative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama who in 1987 said – “For quite some time I have a great interest in the close relationship between Eastern Philosophy and Western Science. My basic aim as a human being is to speak always for the importance of compassion and kindness to help build a better happier human society and a bright future.” What started as an intellectual experiment between scientists, scholars and contemplatives and experts in introspection and mental training, resulted into Mind and Life Institute organizing a two day conference in September 2003 titled Investigating the Mind at MIT. This marked a new development phase of MLI, catalyzing new fields of science that involved collaboration between scientists and contemplatives in research and clinical settings. In April 2012 MLI reached the global community by hosting world’s first International Symposium for Contemplative Studies in Denver. The work at MLI is always guided by the mandate to alleviate suffering, cultivate kindness and compassion and advance human flourishing. The Indian Trust Ayurgyan Nyas was registered in the beginning of 2014 to strengthen three global initiatives of MLI in the areas of ethics, education and human development; craving, desire and addiction; and mapping the mind. 3

OUR PURPOSE

Ayurgyan Nyas was established in 2014 with the aim to infuse new pedagogies into the existing educational system to help children inculcate values that make us human – care, peace, compassion, empathy responsibility, sharing eventually evolving into citizens who can work to promote national integration, interfaith and global harmony. Values exist naturally in the human mind and all it needs is nurturing. In order to eliminate the global problems, a natural tendency of compassion and caring especially in the children and young adults needs to be identified and developed. Parents and teachers want schooling to support children’s ability to become lifelong learners who are able to love, work, and act as responsible members of the community. To meet this goal an ethics based education has to be integrated, with the one that gives skills to earn. Such a secular ethics based curriculum will have immediate benefits in mental health, character building, social and emotional development and train the child to care of himself and others.

OUR METHOD

Ayurgyan Nyas wishes to make available its well- researched and intensively designed curriculum to all educational systems across India. This has been developed by experts to specially suit our context, in keeping the need for ethical education to parallel the more achievement oriented curricula. Our trainers share this knowledge with teachers in various formats for a school or many schools in a common workshop for all the three levels - primary, middle and secondary level. The teachers, in turn , equipped with study material as well as intensive training impart ongoing interactive sessions throughout the year to the students. "A compassionate attitude helps you communicate more easily with your fellow human beings. As a result, you make more genuine friends and the atmosphere around you is more positive, which gives you greater inner strength. this inner strength helps you spontaneously concern yourself with others, instead of thinking only about yourself." - Dalai Lama
