Mitavite understands the nutritional and physiological interactions 0 and needs of the horse and Sodium and demands Chloride uses and applies this knowledge to develop feeds that meet the requirements of all types of horses.
The Steam-Extrusion Solution Potassium Magnesium Calcium Steam-extrusion is the process where grain and mixes are filled with steam and water and forced under high pressure through a barrel by a large screw. In a short period of time the grain is heated to boiling point. It then passes through a die and is cut into shapes. The extruded nut is then dried, cooled and bagged. By providing a high temperature, high pressure environment the complex structures of starches, proteins and oils are untangled, making digestion and absorption easier for the horse.
The previously dominant pasture diet for the horse is no longer sufficient for the workload and increased demands on leisure and performance horses. Diets containing more starch and protein are being fed to improve performance. The horses digestive system has not been designed to digest high starch and protein feed such in the small intestine and does as grains. When feeding grain it is important that it is digested not pass through into the large intestine (caecum).
There is a delicate balance of micro organisms in the caecum (part of the large intestine). If ammonia and lactic acid are produced (by-products of starch and protein digestion in the large intestine) then the beneficial micro organisms die. Once the good micro organisms lose the “balance of power” the bad ones increase in number which can lead to decreased efficiency, behavioural changes, diarrhoea and veterinary emergencies such as colic and laminitis. Early feeding practices added raw cereal grains to the diets of horses to increase the energy and nutrient levels of the ration. This was not an efficient method of feeding, because raw grains are poorly digested in the small intestine and provide a poorly balanced ration when fed with roughage. Only 29% of whole corn is digested in the small intestine. The remainder passes to the large intestine where it is fermented, yielding lactic acid and changing the acidity in the gut. Cracking and grinding feeds became a popular attempt at increasing the digestibility of the feed. Although this did slightly increase the digestibility of the feed it had limitations. Cracked and ground grains oxidize and become rancid very quickly, decreasing their quality and palatability. It became obvious that unprocessed feeds were not well digested by the horse and the older less efficient methods such as cracking, grinding and pelleting have now been superseded by a superior process known as steam-extrusion. 4

Leaders in Research and Technology Mitavite have been making horse feeds for over 28 years. During this time we have established ourselves as being a leader in the industry. Mitavite have an innovative, dedicated and committed approach in formulating and producing horses feeds. The veterinarians, biochemists, equine nutritionists and agricultural scientists all work together at Mitavite researching, testing and trialling the latest advances in feeding horses. Extensive research in the field and in the laboratory allow Mitavite to incorporate the latest advances in feeding horses into their steam extruded and rolled and roasted feeds and supplements. A perfect example is the research Ray Biffin and his team have done in unlocking the secrets to the functions and uses of natural Vitamin K (found in our product Bonafide with the active constituent Quinaquanone) and how it can be beneficial to the health and wellbeing of horses. This research has been integrated into our feeding range helping to improve the bone density and geometry in horses. Mitavite feeds and supplements are continually being tried and tested, revised and updated to produce premium products to provide horse’s with optimal nutrition. When formulating a premium feed the nutritionists and scientists at Mitavite look
at the nutritional goals that need to be achieved in developing a premium formula. The amino acid profile in Mitavite feeds has been closely matched to a horse’s needs to produce lean muscle mass and strong bone. Where possible chelated mineral proteinates and natural vitamins are used to enhance the bioavailability and absorption of nutrients. The amount of each nutrient fed is carefully calculated taking into account the needs of the horse and the interaction with other nutrients. When feeding horses it is important the best quality ingredients are fed. Mitavite source premium quality raw ingredients and have
strict quality control and testing procedures to ensure the best quality product is produced for all horses. The feeds are made in an equine only feed mill to rule out any possible cross contamination between species feeds, knowing every mouthful of feed is safe for your horse. Feeding horses is a science that involves a thorough knowledge of nutrients and how they interact. Mitavite have used this knowledge and the latest advances in science and combined it with a committed team to provide safe, quality, premium products to enhance a horses wellbeing, health and 5 performance.

Feeding Management
Meeting your horse’s nutritional needs in a safe, efficient manner PROVIDE A BALANCED DIET Feed a well profiled feed, such as Mitavite feeds, to the levels suggested by the manufacturer, with the correct amounts of roughage to provide a ration that is balanced for all nutrients. FEED BY WEIGHT NOT BY VOLUME 1 dipper of oats will not weight the same as 1 dipper of chaff. Ideally you need to weigh a dipper of each feed so you know how many dippers of each feed your horse needs to meet his/her needs. Look up the Mitavite feeding guides to work out how much weight of each feed you should be feeding and measure out the number of dippers needed to reach that weight. FEED THE RIGHT AMOUNT As a guide a horse should be fed approximately 2-2.5% of their body weight in feed per day. If your horse is 500kg he will need to be fed 10+kg of feed per day! This is made up of the hard feed and also includes the pasture your horse eats or the hay and chaff you are handfeeding. MAKE FEEDING CHANGES GRADUALLY Any changes to the feeding regime should be made over 7-14 days to allow the gut microbes and digestive tract to adjust to the new feed. Changes to concentrates should not be more than 0.2-0.3kg per day for mature horses.
MAXIMISE DIGESTION OF NUTRIENTS IN THE SMALL INTESTINE Feed a Steam Extruded Feed - Mitavite steam-extruded feeds are advanced feeds that are over 90% digested in the small intestine. By maximising the digestion of starch and protein in the small intestine, fermentation of undigested starch and protein in the hindgut is minimised, reducing the heat, acid and gas produced. Feed hay 2 hours before or 2 hours after concentrate. This slows the transit time of the feed, allowing the digestive tract more time to digest and absorb the hard feed. Split the feed up into 2-3 feeds per day. Feeding more than 400g of hard feed per 100kg of bodyweight per meal may overload the stomach causing poorly digested feed to flow through into the small and large intestine. E.g. If you are feeding say 4kg of hard feed to a 500kg horse, we suggest splitting the ration into at least 2 feeds so each meal doesn’t’ exceed 2kg of hard feed. PADDOCK SIZE AND EXERCISE Research suggests that paddock exercise increases bone strength and cortical thickness, although it needs to be for a minimum of 12 hours per day or bone density will decrease. Paddocks need to be big enough for the horses to run round in. i.e at least 5 acres. HORSES LOVE A ROUTINE Try to keep the same feeding time each day and keep the ration the same each day, adjusting the hard feed depending on the workload.
FEED ADEQUATE ROUGHAGE Roughage is the pasture your horse eats or the hay and chaff you hand feed. Ideally all horses should have ad lib roughage 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. This can be provided as pasture, or if the horse is stabled, ad lib hay. The minimum amount of roughage needed is 1-1.5% of the bodyweight of the horse….that’s 5-7.5kg of roughage (pasture, hay and/or chaff) per day for a 500kg horse. If your pasture levels drop you need to feed additional hay to make up for the difference. An ideal mix of roughage is 30% legumes such as clover or lucerne and 70% cereal or grass roughage. FEED TO THE WORKLOAD Always feed a ration that matches the workload of the horse. Feeding too much hard feed can increase bodyweight and the energy level of the ration. HOW MUCH PROTEIN? Protein is needed to build muscle and top line on horses. When checking the protein in a feed you need to check: (i) The grams of protein fed in the total ration, not just the % on the bag (ii) Make sure all the amino acids are fed at the correct level (Mitavite feeds provide a favourable essential amino acid profile) (iii) The protein needs to be highly digestible i.e steam extruded or rolled and roasted
7
Step by Step Guide to calculating a Ration for your Horse Step 1 Weigh your Horse Ideally the most accurate way to weigh your horse is to use horse scales. If you do not have access to a set of horse scales here are 2 easy ways to weigh your horse:
Step 2 Condition score your horse It is a good idea to regularly condition score your horse. This is done by comparing your horse’s condition with a condition score chart.
Step 4 Select a Mitavite feed that suits your horses discipline and make-up. Mitavite feeds have been formulated for the various pursuits and disciplines.
1. Load your horse on a float and visit a public weigh bridge or check if your local cattle farmer has scales. You will be surprised how many weigh bridges are about.
A healthy horse should be in moderately good to good condition. Have a look on our website for our condition score chart, so you can correctly assess your horses condition.
For instance if you use your horse for leisure and he can become anxious and spirited then XTRA-COOL would be a suitable starting feed. A hard working racehorse that needs a complete feed can be fed XLR8, FORMULA 3 or SUSTAINA.
If your horse is not in moderately good to good condition you may need to adjust his feeding regime. View the ready reckoners in this handbook for the discipline of your horse to help you choose the correct feed. If you’re still not sure what or how much to feed, try our diet analysis service on the website or call us on our toll free number.
View the ready reckoners in this handbook for the discipline of your horse to help you choose the correct feed.
If you don’t know the weight of your empty horse float you will need to make two trips, but be sure to record the weight of your empty float for future reference.
2. Using a flexible tape measure take the two measurements as per the diagram below and enter these into the weight calculator on the Mitavite website. This will give you the weight of your horse + or – 10%.
There are other ways to determine the current weight of your horse such as girth tapes, height tables and a guesstimate although the accuracy of these methods is limited. 8
Step 3 Determine the exercise level of your horse To determine the exercise level of your horse take a minute to visit the Exercise Calculator on the Mitavite website. This easy to use tool will help you work out how much ‘work’ your horse is doing every week and will tell you how much energy it will use to carry out this work. Your results can then be matched to the feeding guide on every bag of Mitavite.
Step 5 Look up the feeding guide for the appropriate feed on the bag or website.
Sport and Lifestyle Sport and Leisure horses are required to perform at varying levels over 1,2 or 3 days. They need to perform with a ‘cool’ behaviour, with long term soundness and a level of fitness and stamina that allows them to perform well.
Once you know what exercise level your horse has been scored at, we need to assess your horse’s make-up and temperament and feed the energy sources that suit and meet your horse’s needs.
All sport and leisure horses need a ration that is balanced for all nutrients. It is important that the ration reflects the changing demands of the horse throughout the year. If the workload of the horse is increased or decreased then the energy and nutrient level of the ration should be increased or decreased. Adjusting the amount of concentrate fed will change the amount of energy and nutrients that the horse receives.
Mitavite have a range of feeds to suit the workload, makeup and temperament of any horse and use a variety of energy, protein and nutrient sources to match the needs of individual horses. Our Sport and Lifestyle Quick Guide can help you to work out what feed suits your horse. If your horse is a good doer a feed such as Mitavite Munga may be suitable. Normal doers that can become fizzy can benefit from the Mitavite Xtra-Cool formulation.
Feeding the right feed for your horse’s workload, temperament and make-up is important. Take a look at the exercise calculator on our website to calculate the exercise level and workload of your horse.
If you want to achieve good topline and muscle on your horse you need to feed a good quality protein. Protein and amino acids are the ‘building blocks’ that play a role in the building and restoring of muscle. Optimal levels of protein and essential amino acids (EAA) need to be fed during all stages of work for the performance horse.
The protein in Mitavite feeds has a unique EAA spectrum designed specifically for horses. It is in a highly digestible form, provided at the correct amount and provides the correct level of amino acids to promote the appearance of strength and good muscle development. The vitamins and minerals are provided at the correct level in a bioavailable form to enhance absorption. No matter how much concentrate you are feeding, don’t forget that all horses need to be fed plenty of good quality roughage. Good quality roughage should be free of mould, does not contain poisonous or harmful weeds or pastures, has a pleasant sweet smell and is free from dust. An ideal mix of roughage is 25-30% legumes and 70-75% grasses or cereal roughage. Remember that roughage needs to make up a good portion of the horses ration and a minimum of 1-1.5% of their bodyweight should be fed as roughage, this includes the amount the horse eats at pasture.
Handy Hints • Improved muscling and top line may be achieved by adding 0.5-1kg of Mitavite Munga or Mitavite Promita or 200g or Super Amino 66 to your existing ration. • If your horse needs more cover or condition try increasing the amount of Mitavite feed fed or add in some Performa 3 Oil or Power On. • If feeding electrolytes always provide fresh water. • Don’t feed immediately before a competition. Take the grain or concentrate away approximately 4 hours prior to competing. • When travelling long distances take regular breaks and ensure there is adequate ventilation in the truck or float. Gut activity can be maintained by providing good quality dampened hay or a small amount of dampened chaff and steam-extruded feed. The concentrate should be reduced to 1/3 of what is usually fed, and where possible keep the head below chest height to assist lower airway drainage. Feed a steam extruded feed or a feed with a steam extruded component such as Munga or Promita that is low in dust, free of microbial contaminants, is nutrient dense and highly digestible. Horses that can go off their feed after a long journey and while away will benefit from Anazolic or Super Amino 66. • During winter the horse can be warmed by feeding an extra biscuit or two of a high fibre hay such as oaten hay. The hay is digested in the large intestine producing heat during the digestion process which warms the horse on the inside. • The shine on a horses coat can be improved by adding 50-150mls of Performa 3 Oil to the ration. It is also a ‘cool’ energy source, being predominantly digested in the small intestine. • Horses need a minimum of 1-1.5% of their bodyweight in roughage per day. As the seasons change and the pasture in the paddock changes, the amount of hay hand fed will need to adjusted to make up for the changes in the pasture. i.e during winter more hay may need to be hand fed. 9 • Condition score your horse regularly. Horses should be kept in a moderate to good condition. If the horse is too fat or thin adjustments can be made to the ration.

Helping Our Older Friends in Their Golden Years With an increasing number of ‘aged’ horses in the horse community it’s important that we understand how horses age and how their needs change so we can improve your horses longevity and wellbeing during his/her older years. Horses age at different rates and some horses will show outward and inward signs of aging from 15 years of age onwards. Changes occur in the horse and this may be evident by their reduced ability to perform at the same level, a loss of muscle mass, the loss of condition during winter, a susceptibility to be prone to more infections and diseases and poor dentition. By providing correct management and feeding techniques the age of the horse cannot be changed but we can help the horse in leading a healthy active life. By recognising the signs of aging we can implement the correct management and feeding techniques to increase wellbeing: Loss of Muscle Mass - Provide a feed, such as Gumnuts, that contains the correct level of protein, the right amount of amino acids and is well digested to enhance the building of muscle combined with a suitable exercise regime. Reduced Bone Density - Provide a balanced ration that provides the correct level of bone building nutrients including Bonafide to enhance bone geometry and density. These are found in Gumnuts.
18
Loss of efficiency to correctly thermoregulate – In hot climates, provide a steam extruded feed, such as Gumnuts, to minimise the heat produced during digestion. Increase the energy level of the ration in cold climates to maintain condition by increasing the amount of Gumnuts and roughage fed. Reduced Immune Function - Provide a ration that is balanced for all nutrients, such as Gumnuts and roughage More prone to inflammatory disorders - Feed a ration that contains Omega 3 oils to correct the Omega 3:Omega 6 ratio that may be beneficial in reducing inflammatory responses. Poor Teeth - Provide regular dental care and feed a steam extruded feed that can be dampened to a mash prior to feeding for horses with poor teeth (Gumnuts). Roughage may need to be fed in a partially chopped state to horses with poor teeth with the addition of soaked fibres such as beet pulp. Reduced Saliva Production - Provide a fully steam extruded feed to increase chewing time, increasing the production of saliva and coating the feed to minimise the incidence of choke. Other Effects of aging - Older horses can be susceptible to stress and their digestive system can be compromised as they age. By providing a probiotic like Protexin found in Gumnuts, gut health may be maintained
Providing a well-balanced diet that has been tailored to the older horse that recognises their changing needs combined with regular dental care and a stringent worming programme with some form of physical activity is essential to maintain an older horses condition and well being for a healthy active life.
Did you Know... To compare a horse’s age to human age, multiply the horse age by 3 and add 12. So a 2 year old horse has an equivalent age to an 18 year old human and so on. Research has shown older horses, particularly those that cannot maintain condition on a standard formulation, benefit from a ration specifically tailored for older horses. Gumnuts can be dampened to a mash immediately prior to feeding with cold water for horses with poor teeth. The ration and general management can influence how older horses stay in condition, particularly over the winter months. Horses with poor teeth can have trouble chewing pasture or hay and may require all their roughage to be hand fed.

Speedi-Beet Usage Guide As a feedstuff: Up to 20% of concentrate allowance, either as commercial feed or cereals can be substituted with Speedi-Beet. Adjust feed allowances accordingly. As a palatant: Up to 5% of concentrate allowance as a top dressing for hard feeds or where palatability is a problem. As a conditioner: Use 10% of concentrate allowance, mixed into the concentrate to maintain optimum condition in roughed off horses or to fill out of condition horses. As a nutritional aid: In cases where early grass growth leads to conditions of hind gut acidity, Speedi-Beet can be fed prior to grazing to reduce grass intake. Speedi-Beet is high in pectins and low in starch, allowing correct microbial fermentation and reducing the effect of acidosis related problems.

Premium Nutrition for Mares and Foals Producing a well-developed, sound, healthy foal is the aim for all horse breeders and stud managers. The combination of good management, correct care, genetics and most importantly a good feeding programme are needed for a foal to reach its genetic potential. The health of the mare needs to be maintained through all phases of pregnancy and her ability to care for her new foal and to be put back in foal in a timely manner after foaling is important.
Young Growing Horses The stud manager and owner need to be able to balance optimal growth with minimising skeletal problems that could affect the athletic ability and appearance of the horse. It is imperative that a balanced feeding regime is provided to young growing horses to minimise growth related disorders to produce a sound elite athlete.
The right mix of Energy, Protein, Vitamins and Minerals The energy a young growing horse receives contributes to the growth rate of that horse. Excess energy can contribute to bone related disorders and ideally, optimal growth rate should be encouraged to contribute to athletic performance, longevity and soundness.
22
A young horse will attain 90% of its estimated mature height by the time it is a yearling. Providing a ‘Good Quality Protein’ and the correct levels and ratios of minerals will support optimal skeletal development. A ‘Good Quality Protein’ will have the correct amount of protein, will contain the correct amount and level of amino acids and will be well digested. Good Quality Protein needs to be provided in the diet for the skeletal muscle and bone to be correctly built and formed. It is important that the correct level of minerals are fed, not too much and not too little. Deficiencies in bone building minerals such as natural vitamin K, Calcium, Phosphorus, Copper and Zinc can contribute to bone diseases. Deficiencies in Copper can affect normal cartilage development, yet excess levels of Zinc affect Copper absorption and high levels of phosphorus can affect Calcium absorption. Understanding and providing the right amount of nutrients is important in producing a well-developed horse. Free paddock exercise for a minimum of 12 hours per day is ideal for young growing horses. Paddocks should be no less than 2ha (5 acres) or preferably bigger. Confinement to stalls or small yards is not mentally beneficial for the young horses in addition to having and osteoporotic effect on bone, which decreases bone density. Research suggests that paddock exercise increases bone strength and cortical thickness, although it needs to be for a minimum of 12 hours per day or bone density will decrease.
The Mare Nutrition of the breeding mare is paramount to ensure she is healthy, has a good pregnancy rate, maintains her pregnancy, produces a strong, viable foal and can get back in foal in a timely manner. Pregnancy rates need to be maximised and this is done by ensuring the mare is maintained in a good condition and fed a well-balanced ration. Pasture alone is not enough to meet the nutritional needs of the pregnant mare. Protein, macro and micro minerals, energy and vitamin requirements increase as the foal develops and grows throughout the pregnancy. During lactation the mare literally needs to eat enough for two. She needs to be fed a ration that will meet the protein, mineral and energy demands placed on her and produce enough milk to correctly feed her foal. Therefore, the quality of the ration is paramount during lactation, ensuring it contains well digested energy sources, the best quality protein, amino acids and those all important bone building nutrients in a bioavailable form. Pregnancy, foaling and lactation are an exciting time for stud managers and owners. Feeding these horses a well formulated, highly digestible concentrate that contains the right amount of nutrients will ensure both the mare and the young growing horse are receiving premium nutrition to optimize the growth of the young horse and wellbeing and health of the mare.
Vitamin K function and bone density of growing horses Introduction and background on Vitamin K Vitamin K deficiency is widespread in non-free-range animals, including horses and humans. Vitamin K has three major forms: K1, found in fresh green leaves; K2, which is synthesized in the liver (and by various bacteria); and K3, the artificial form which is added to most stockfeeds. Until recently Vitamin K has only been considered for its role in blood clotting. It is now known to have a major role in bone metabolism, cartilage & joint integrity, and major blood vessel health.
Vitamin K in Nature Vitamin K1 is a transient instantaneous product of photosynthesis in living green leaves and is destroyed in cut leaves of all plants by light. For example, freshly picked spinach contains 5 times as much K1 as supermarket spinach which appears fresh but has been under fluorescent light. When pasture is cut for making hay, the Vitamin K1 level falls very quickly and the higher the UV index (UVI) the more rapidly it disappears.
Bonafide® Bonafide® is a water soluble, bio-available form of Vitamin K 1 & K2. Bonafide® is available as a powder and it is also added to Mitavite’s range of premium breeding and race feeds to support bone integrity.
Raising sound horses In the context of raising sound horses, limited access to fresh green foliage through drought, frost or availability may result in a Vitamin K deficiency which in turn can impact on bone strength. To support bone density, Vitamin K1 & K2 (Bonafide) is required on a daily basis. Horses that are spelled on fresh pasture and then moved to a full time box regime can show a reduction in bone density in as little as 10 days. In sport horses, particularly heavier breeds such as Warmbloods, bone and joint issues can easily go undetected until the horse is under saddle at 3 or 4 years of age or it has x-rays for a pre-purchase veterinary examination.

NEW SCIENCE IN BONE INTEGRITY
There is quite a dramatic improvement in the OCD lesion in this stifle that appears to be the result of Bonafide. As a breeder I would have been petrified, but as a vet looking for a purchaser, I would give this one the “low risk for racing” assessment after only three months treatment. Dr John B Walker BVSc
In the thoroughbred industry yearlings are often x-rayed well before they enter the sale ring to check for bone related disorders such as OCD lesions. Any faults can then be assessed and treated, often surgically.
Bonafide®
Bonafide® Yearling Study The following presale x-rays were taken of thoroughbred yearlings that were identified as requiring surgery.
NEW SCIENCE IN BONE INTEGRITY
The OCD lesion present was moderate to marked and would probably have affected performance, but certainly affected the price of the sale. After treatment with Bonafide, I would have a lot of confidence as a vendor, but would have it assessed as “low risk for racing” when assessing it for a purchaser. Dr John B Walker BVSc
The yearlings were treated with 20g of Bonafide® per day between the x-ray dates. The results show marked improvement and in all cases eliminated the need for surgery.
Clearly a moderate sized OCD lesion in the medial trochlear ridge of the right stifle that appears to have disappeared in the four months it was on Bonafide. As a veterinarian acting for a purchaser, I would pass this horse with no risk associated to the lesion after four months of Bonafide treatment. Dr John B Walker BVSc

Predictive Tools New Mitavite online tools allow breeders to monitor BMI (body mass index) and predict mature height and weight for growing horses.
BMI Calculator
The 3 estimators illustrated are easily accessible in a live format on the Mitavite website. Entering height, weight and age data for any horse or pony will allow you to monitor and track your youngster’s progress towards expected mature height and weight. These tools can be used in conjunction with the BMI estimator to check that your horse is in the correct condition band for its age and body type. If you don’t have access to horse scales see the ‘Weigh your Horse’ guide on Page 6 of this handbook and if using the measuring tape method then enter the measurements into the online weight estimator on the Mitavite website.
Predicted Height
Please note that the online tools are to be used as a guide only. While they are based on extensive statistical data, it is impossible to take into account all factors that may affect normal growth rates and weight gains.

Feeding the Stallion Stallions fed out of breeding season should be fed a balanced ration with energy levels that meet the workload of the horse. Ideally stallions should be maintained in a moderate to moderately fleshy condition and given adequate exercise so a reasonable fitness level is maintained. At elite studs, stallions may need to service more than 150 mares in one season and this could involve mounting two to three mares per day. If an artificial insemination program is used the stallion may need to mount the phantom three to four times in a week. This can be compared to some stallions that only breed with a few mares for the entire season. Therefore not every stallion is fed the same ration. Energy and nutrient needs will change depending on the workload and make-up of the stallion. During the breeding season the energy and nutrient levels required can increase up to 25-30%. Adequate but not excessive exercise should be provided. Excessive exercise can reduce libido and interest in mares so care needs to be taken when exercising breeding stallions. Breeding stallions require a ration similar to working horses. Many studs have had great success in feeding Mitavite Formula 3 or Breeda or a combination of Formula 3 and Breeda depending on the temperament and workload of the stallion with adequate roughage. It is important not to over feed breeding stallions as libido and fertility can be reduced in overweight stallions.
26
Super Amino 66, a protein, vitamin and minerals supplement can be fed to stallions that need improved muscling and top line, need a pick me up or have a heavy season. In addition to having anti-inflammatory properties and being beneficial for joint disorders and improving coat condition and appearance, Omega 3 Oil supplementation may be beneficial in reproduction and sperm health in stallions. Supplementation with an Omega 3 fatty acid will not increase the amount of semen that is produced but it may improve the health of individual sperm. There is ongoing research in this area and current research suggests that: • DHA-rich Omega 3 supplements may be beneficial by enhancing the number of sperm and sperm quality. It may also aid in improving sperm motility when the semen has been frozen or chilled in breeding stallions. • Omega 3 supplementation improves blood flow throughout the body, including blood flow to reproductive organs. • Essential fatty acids make up part of the sperm cell membrane. A portion of the essential fatty acid in the sperm cell membrane is DHA. This essential Omega 3 fatty acid is found in fish oil, i.e, Performa 3 Oil. If supplementing with an Omega 3 oil it needs to be introduced for 2 spermatic cycles (approximately 110 days, 55 days per cycle) prior to the breeding season and throughout the breeding season. This can be achieved by feeding 200mls of Performa 3 Oil to breeding stallions.
When adding oil do so over a 3-6 week period. Start with 20-30mls and increase by 5-10mls per day. If the manure becomes soft decrease the rate of increase. An increasing amount of research on Vitamin K1&2 is revealing how this vitamin has a role in the activation of osteocalcin, and also activation of 15 other critical proteins throughout the body. Resent research in this area has reported positive results in germ cell survival and spermatogenesis in other species, which may lead to benefits of Vitamin K1&2 supplementation to improve sperm production. Bonafide (a vitamin K1&2 supplement) is found in Mitavite’s premium feeds such as Breeda, Formula 3, Promita, & Munga and many more. Breeding Stallion Daily Feeding Guide Bodyweight kg

Racing The nutrition that the racehorse receives fuels, builds and supports the body for racing, and repairs and rebuilds the horse after training and racing. Good nutrition can not only help horses to win races, it can help to keep them sound and enhance recovery throughout their campaign. Providing the correct level and type of nutrients racehorses need for top performance requires a feed that is safe to feed, provides quick assessable fuel, promotes muscling, provides the nutrients for high performance and a quick recovery and is palatable and highly digestible.
Safe to Feed The challenge when feeding a high energy feed is to provide the energy to fuel the muscles without overloading the large intestine with starches which can cause hindgut acidosis, laminitis, tying-up or colic. Maximising digestion in the small intestine helps to reduce hindgut acidosis and this is done by providing steam-extruded feeds that are over 90% digested in the small intestine and rolled and roasted feeds.
Provides quick assessable fuel Fuel and energy is a major component of the high performance horse’s diet. The high starch levels found in cereal grains are broken down in the digestive process to glucose and stored as glycogen in the muscle. When an ‘average’ horse reaches speeds of 800+meters per minute he crosses the ‘anaerobic threshold’ and uses the fast contracting muscles that are fuelled full of glycogen to give him the explosive energy he needs to win races. Oil provides an alternative energy source, spares blood glucose and aids in reducing heat produced during digestion, allowing the horse to reach top speed for longer. The type of oil used has more specific roles and oils high in Omega 3 may improve red blood cell flexibility and reduce inflammation. Promotes Muscling Once the primary protein needs have been delivered for maintenance the protein needed by a racehorse, has two main functions, to build muscle and to help muscle recover and repair after training and racing. As the skeletal muscle in the horse is predominantly protein, ‘Good Quality Protein’ needs to be provided in the diet for the skeletal muscle to be correctly built and repaired. A ‘Good Quality Protein’ will have the correct amount of protein, will contain the correct amount and level of amino acids and is well digested.

Provides Nutrients for Performance and Quick Recovery As the exercise levels of a horse increase so too does the need for additional vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Optimum, not maximum or minimum levels of nutrients need to be fed. Feeding too much of a nutrient can cause antagonism with other nutrients and can cause as many problems as not feeding enough of a nutrient. Feeding excess levels of Vitamin E may have an inhibitory effect on beta-carotene metabolism and Vitamin K metabolism. Providing minerals that are chelated and vitamins in their natural form increases bioavailability and absorption and these are found in Mitavite feeds. Racehorses have high levels of oxidative stress. Well formulated concentrates can help to reduce oxidative stress by providing the correct balance of anti-oxidants. Mitavite race feeds provide anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E, Selenium and Vitamin C to minimise oxidative stress. These three anti-oxidants work together to decrease fatigue during racing, improve recovery times, reduce the risk of strain on the muscle, heart, tendon and joints and improve the longevity of body cells and the horses racing career. Bone Strength – The Bonafide Story The maximum bone strength of a horse is achieved between 4-7 years old, yet we start to race horses at 2 years of age. Ensuring all the nutrients are provided for optimal bone growth and strength is of primary importance in minimising injury and maximising soundness.
A protein in the bone called oestocalcin needs Vitamin K1/K2 (found in Bonafide) to stick the major components of bone together, Collagen and Hydroxyapatite. Without adequate levels of Vitamin K1 and K2 the oestocalcin cannot bind the major components of the bone together to build bone with good structure and density. Research by Ray Biffin and his associates have shown that there has been a reduction in shin soreness in 2 year old racehorses supplemented with Bonafide. The bone density of these trial horses has improved over the period
of supplementation. We would strongly suggest that any diet for a racehorse should contain Bonafide to ensure good bone density and geometry. Feeding horses is a science that involves a thorough knowledge of nutrients and how they interact. Mitavite take the guess work out of feeding by meeting the goals of nutritional management to nurture, develop and realise the horses natural and genetic athletic ability.
Handy Hints • Imbalances in electrolytes can affect performance, feed intake, muscle and heart function and bring on fatigue sooner. As horses lose electrolytes in their sweat it is important they are provided with adequate electrolytes each day in a well profiled feed such as a Mitavite race feed. • Horses prone to tying up can be fed a 400g dose of Fast Twitch Formula with their ration combined with a suitable training regime. • If a horse does not have access to feed for 10-12 hours the stomach wall begins to erode…this can develop into a gastric ulcer. ALWAYS ensure ad lib roughage is available to a stabled horse. • Muscles can be ‘trained’ to store more glycogen. This is done by providing a training program that puts a level of stress onto the muscle fuel storage system and feeding a ration targeting the correct energy systems. • Fast twitch muscles can be used aerobically and anaerobically. They can become more aerobic or anaerobic depending on the type of exercise given. • Muscling can be enhanced by providing a ration with branched chain and essential amino acids. • Vitamin C supplementation can benefit respiratory disorders such as bleeding and boost the immune system in some horses. • Research suggests that supplementing with Bonafide at recommended levels, and thereby increasing bone density, can reduce shin soreness in young race horses. 33

Mitavite® Extru® Grains – Provide Effective, Safe Feed-room Options Mitavite Extru® Corn Corn has long been used as an energy source in horse feeds. In its raw form it is poorly digested and when cracked, it oxidises quickly resulting in reduced nutritional value. Mitavite steam extruded corn is palatable, highly digestible and locks in the nutritional value for longer.

Enhancing the racing diet using super fibres • High energy fibre source • Pectins in beet pulp protect the stomach lining, reducing the risk of gastric ulcers • Helps horses hold condition through a preparation • Soaked feed aids rapid rehydration • Beet pulp improves muscle recovery rates after exercise Beet fibre is particularly suited for horses in hard work or racing. It has high levels of soluble fibre and is broken down almost completely in the hindgut producing high levels of propionic acid (one of the VFA) that is converted to glucose in the cells without stimulating insulin and being converted to glycogen.
Stomach Ulcers Fibre-Beet is a carefully designed blend of highly degradable fibre sources that provide optimum fermentation patterns. High levels of pectin and surfactants can help maintain the mucus linings of the gut whilst the structural fibre absorbs excess stomach acid -helping combat the conditions for ulceration. Alkaline Fibre-Beet is fermented to produce high levels of butyric acid, which aids the function of the cells of the gut wall, and low levels of lactic acid, making it an ideal alkaline feed. Energy and condition With an effective degradability 50% higher than forage fibre, Fibre-Beet can improve energy intake whilst keeping dietary fibre levels at an optimum.
INGREDIENTS: Speedi-Beet flakes, Lucerne nuts, Oatfeed Pellets, Cane Molasses, Vegetable oil, Vitamin &Trace element Supplement, Biotin, Peppermint

STORM® from Racing Blue is a unique feed supplement that aids training and performance, by targeting muscle acidosis, calcium regulation and antioxidant status to fully support muscle contraction during intense exercise, enabling race horses and other performance horses to delay muscle fatigue and maintain speed and power for longer. During intense exercise an increasingly acid environment in muscle, as a result of H+ released from lactic acid and other biochemical processes, is a major contributor to muscle fatigue. Tired muscles lead to a decrease in speed and or power, limiting performance. STORM® provides essential nutrient building blocks to boost the level of muscle CARNOSINE, an essential buffer of accumulating H+, and regulates calcium function in the muscle cells to support sustained muscle contraction. STORM® is scientifically proven to boost carnosine synthesis and is supported by extensive research data in horses. STORM® is supported by a suite of global patents and is exclusively available through Mitavite in Australasia. STORM® is a unique formulation incorporating ProCarnosine®, a single specific bioavailable source of beta alanine, combined with synergistic ingredients to boost muscle carnosine and deliver comprehensive support to muscle, the power-house for performance STORM® has a proven track record in the UK, Middle East and Hong Kong for racing and other performance horses.
STORM® is suitable for all performance horses including those involved in racing, eventing, showjumping, endurance, polo and dressage. STORM® conforms to the rules of racing and to FEI rules and each batch is tested prior to sale for the absence of specified prohibited substances (see website for details). STORM Actions • Unique source of ProCarnosine® • Boosts muscle Carnosine • Fights muscle acidosis • Regulates calcium within muscle cells • Provides antioxidant support for muscle • Maintains power output and delays muscle fatigue • Supports normal muscle function and aids training and performance

Vitamite® New Science in Performance Supplements A supplement can enhance performance and well being in horses that need ‘more’ than a balanced ration. The majority of horses can be fed a Mitavite complete feed with adequate roughage. At times due to injury, weight loss or gain, pasture imbalances and the need to push performance to the next level additional supplementation may be necessary. Vitamite have formulated supplements that provide nutrients that can enhance and accelerate well being and performance in certain situations. Handy Hints • Super Amino 66† increases muscling by providing a ‘horse perfect protein’ with a high level of branched chain amino acids that target muscle building • Feeding Super Amino 66† with a milk replacer, plus adequate roughage is an excellent way to optimise the growth and development of the orphaned foal • Backward weanlings and yearlings have shown growth in height and muscle when supplemented with Super Amino 66† • Super Amino 66† is ideal for horses that need a little more condition or they are going off their feed • Mares that have a condition score below moderate would benefit from a course of Super Amino 66†. Research suggests that an increasing plane of nutrition will increase fertility, particularly so in thinner mares • Convalescing horses benefit from a course of Super Amino 66† to accelerate recovery
46
• Anazolic may be beneficial for any stud horse that is going off their feed. Stallions that have a large book of mares or have been overworked benefit from Anazolic • Performa 3 oil is beneficial for energy production, storage of fat-soluble vitamins, formation of hormones, building cell membranes, natural anti-inflammatory properties, increase red blood cell flexibility and improve immunity by the addition of garlic • The maximum benefits from oil occur after approximately two months, so it is best to introduce oil-enriched feeds and Omega 3 supplementation in early training • Adding 60-90g of Bone Power* to the ration each day can balance calcium deficiencies in pasture due to oxalates, depending on the species of pasture present • Protecting young horses and racing 2 Year olds with Bonafide® may help increase bone density and lower the incidence of shin soreness

BONAFIDE® Vitamin K – Bonafide Explained
Trial Results
• The active ingredient in BONAFIDE is Quinaquanone, a water soluble, bio-available form of natural Vitamin K.
Trials have showed a marked increase in bone density on BONAFIDE treated two year olds.
• Natural Vitamin K has a critical effect on the function of osteocalcin, the bone protein that binds the mineral and protein in bone together. Without sufficient natural Vitamin K the binding process is incomplete and low density or defective bone and cartilage are produced. 1
26 two year old thoroughbred racehorses at commencement of training for racing were divided into two groups. One group “BONAFIDE” RECEIVED 7MG Vitamin K formulation each day in feed for six months. The other group “Control” received an apparently identical powder containing no natural Vitamin K.
• Natural Vitamin K is naturally available in fresh, growing green pasture but is highly unstable, being degraded by UV light, wilting or “wintering off.” 2 • Horses that do not have constant access to high quality pasture are likely to be deficient in Vitamin K, leading to a reduction in bone density and bone strength.
Digital radiographs of the left third metacarpal bone and an adjacent aluminium step wedge were taken at various intervals. The radiographic density of the bone and the step wedge were measured and RBAE (radiographic bone aluminium equivalence) calculated. 1,2
• Horses removed from Vitamin K rich pasture and brought into a box/yard regime have demonstrated a reduction in bone density within 7-10 days.
At each subsequent measurement the RBAE for each horse was compared to its initial RBAE and the percentage change recorded.
• There is an established correlation between bone density and the incidence of OCDs and DODs in yearlings and DMD (shinoreness) in 2 year olds. • BONAFIDE is the first product to contain Quinaquanone, a bioavailable form of natural Vitamin K.

Bonafide is now available in selected Mitavite feeds. The MITAVITE range of super premium breeding, sport and lifestyle and race feeds now contain BONAFIDE. These include the market leading race feeds FORMULA 3, ATHLETE PLUS, XLR8, ENERGIZA and IMPACTA, our trusted breeding feeds BREEDA, PROMITA and YEARLING PREP, our speciality feed for old horses GUMNUTS and our muesli feeds MUNGA and COOL CRUSADA.
PERFORMA•3 Performance, health and well-being The way horses are fed has changed over the years. The horse has evolved on a diet that was a mix of a variety of pasture species. This has changed and horses now have access to a limited selection of pasture species, and concentrates are added to the ration. Adding feeds such as soybeans, sunflowers and corn that are high in Omega 6 oils has skewed the Omega 3:Omega 6 balance in the horse’s diet. To correctly balance this ratio, Omega 3 oils need to be added to the ration. Omega 3 oils are a group of unsaturated fatty acids. They cannot be synthesised by the horse and are needed in the diet. There are three essential omega 3 fatty acids. α-linolenic acid which is found in vegetable oils such as Canola and Linseed. The other longer chain Omega 3 fatty acids are only found in animal tissue and fish oil. These are Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA and EPA are in a form that the horse can use immediately. The plant form, α-linolenic acid, needs to be converted to DHA and EPA before it can be used. This process is inefficient and the most direct way of providing these valuable long chain Omega 3 oils is by supplementation. Performa 3 Oil provides serious levels of DHA and EPA.
Research in human and animal nutrition have provided many benefits for feeding the longer chain Omega 3 rich oils, particularly DHA and EPA: • Racing and Performance may benefit as DHA-rich Omega 3 supplements may assist in: – lowering heart rates and lower packed cell volumes during exercise. – It may be beneficial in enhancing red blood cell formation, suppleness and flexibility. – There may be an improvement in blood vessel strength, elasticity of connective tissue and membrane flexibility. – Lung health may improve due to decreased inflammation and improved blood circulation. – Omega 3 supplementation can increase insulin sensitivity, increasing the uptake and storage of glucose and ultimately the energy available to the horse.
• Horses that have cartilage degradation and the pain and inflammation associated with degenerative joint disease such as arthritis, – may be improved with Omega 3 supplementation. It has been shown to be reduced with Omega 3 supplementation in humans. – Omega 3 supplementation may be beneficial for joint maintenance in all horses. – If the Omega 3:Omega 6 ratio is out of balance, moving the balance of power from the proinflammatory Omega 6 oils to the Omega 3 oils, inflammatory responses may be reduced. Help to keep the Omega 3:Omega 6 balance right. Performa 3 Oil provides Omega 3 rich, fish and vegetable oils with added garlic to increase immunity.
• Breeding may benefit from DHA-rich Omega 3 supplements that may contribute to: – enhanced fertility and improved sperm motility when the sperm has been frozen or chilled in the breeding stallion. – Bone and lipid metabolism is improved when Omega 3 fatty acids are used.

Concentrated, horse perfect amino acids Race and Performance Horses
Yearling Preparation
• Horse perfect protein and essential amino acids build strong lean muscle • Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) increase the muscle building power of the feed. • BCAA may be rapidly converted to energy to contribute to the ‘fuel tank’ during races and competition. • Antioxidants can reduce oxidative damage after exercise, improving recovery times. • Bonafide may improve bone geometry and density, that may contribute in lowering shin soreness in 2 year olds.
• Essential amino acids and BCAA build good top line and muscle definition. • Bonafide assists in keeping bones strong and dense.
• Increased nutrients and a horse perfect protein helps to keep older horses in peak condition
Backward Weanlings and Orphaned Foals • Essential Amino Acids, vitamins, minerals and Bonafide, assists to enhance the growth in height and muscle of young growing horses.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Mix in morning or evening feed. One heaped scoop (supplied) holds 200g of Vitamite Super Amino 66. Feed 1 – 4 heaped scoops (200g – 800g) per horse per day.
Horses needing more top line and muscle • Good quality protein with the right balance of essential amino acids helps to build lean muscle mass and top line.

FAST TWITCH A potent blend of nutrients and anti-oxidants to maintain glycogen storage and mitochondria generation in fast twitch oxidative fibres As horses progress during a preparation from paddock condition to race fitness muscle fibres must adapt to the increasing demands made on them. Tie up generally occurs when the horses work rate gets too far ahead of mitochondria production, causing muscles to freeze. Vitamite Fast Twitch Formula provides specific nutrients to assist mitochondrial formation, anti-oxidant vitamins, selenium to enable glutathione peroxidase production and magnesium to address the metabolism imbalance caused by calcium flux on the muscle cell wall.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE Add 1 cup (200gs) to morning and evening feeds for 3 weeks or until symptoms ease. For horses with a history of tie up a 3 week course of Vitamite FTF is recommended prior to the commencement of pacework.

RE-LYTE Vitamite Re-Lyte is a scientific blend of mineral salts that is closely matched to the horses sweat to replace the correct quantity of electrolytes in the horse. Horses fed Mitavite feeds to recommended levels will generally not need additional electrolytes, unless under veterinary advice. Electrolytes are an important part of the horses diet and are needed by the horse daily to regulate the correct acid base balance in the horse, to prevent dehydration, for proper nerve and muscle function and enzyme action. Imbalances in electrolytes can affect performance, feed intake, muscle and heart function and bring on fatigue sooner. Re-Lyte provides the correct balance of electrolytes in a high quality bioavailable, well absorbed formula. Re-Lyte has been formulated to be fed in addition to Mitavite feeds for horses that need additional electrolytes. Veterinarians usually recommend Re-Lyte when additional electrolytes are required. Re-Lyte helps to keep your horse’s electrolytes in the right balance by providing a quality electrolyte mix matched to your horse needs. When feeding electrolytes always ensure your horse has ad lib access to fresh water.

BONE POWER™
Registered with APVMA as an appetite stimulant for horses Anazolic® is a potent source of gamma-oryzanol. Vitamite Anazolic® is Australia’s first registered source of supplementary gamma oryzanol, providing over 1200mg per dose to reach levels necessary for improved appetite. Gamma Oryzanol, a natural, plant derived anti-oxidant, has been shown to be anabolic and have a protective effect against stress induced stomach ulcers in other species. Anazolic® is a valuable nutritional tool for: • Horses with reduced appetite under hard work or racing • Yearlings being prepared for sale
Calcium Complex for Maximum Bioavailability Calcium is an essential mineral, supporting correct, healthy bone development and remodelling in growing and adult horses. Many grasses, including kikuyu, buffel, pangola, setaria, stargrass and panics contain high levels of oxalate, which bind calcium, limiting it’s availability to grazing horses even when pasture is plentiful. Vitamite Bone Power™ uses advanced complexing technology to optimise calcium uptake. • Palatable high-dose Calcium Supplement • Prepared using advanced complexing technology to optimise Calcium bioavailability • Contains a significantly large dose of vitamin D to enhance Calcium uptake • High doses of B vitamins and Trace minerals essential for bone health • Restores Calcium-Phosphorus balance in horses on high grain or high phytate diets • Allows Calcium availalability in horses on pastures containing oxalates Regular Administration: If feeding Lucerne, mix 30g (one scoop) into feed in both morning and evening rations (60g per day). Without Lucerne increase dose to 90g per day If using for the first time gradually increase dosage to recommended levels.

At Mitavite we are continually striving to reduce the impact of our manufacturing and distribution processes on the environment.
Breeding
An effective method of achieving this is the supply of Mitavite Racing, Breeding and Spelling feeds in one of our bulk delivery options.
Bulk Mitavite delivered into silo Breeda, StudGro, Promita Concentrate and a number of custom mixes can be supplied to many areas using a bulk blower truck. Loads are usually either 12 or 24 tonnes. This delivery and storage method offers considerable cost savings and may reduce manual handling in the feed room. As with our feedmill, our blower trucks are designated “equine only for the safety of your horses and for your peace of mind.
Bulka Bag delivery Bulka Bags hold approximately 750kgs of Mitavite and are designed for a single trip to your property. Mitavite Bulka bags are fitted with an easy-to-open bottom shoot if the bag is suspended. Mitavite provide an on-farm delivery service for Bulka bags in some areas.

Equine Feed Safety
DISCLAIMER
Manufactured in an Equine Only Feedmill for your Horses Safety
While Mitavite has taken all due care to ensure that this Handbook contains accurate and up-to-date information, Mitavite makes no warranties or representations of any kind as to the accuracy, currency or completeness.
This simple phrase on the front of every bag of Mitavite feed makes a clear statement that as a company we have put the interests of your horse first. To maximize the return on investment in plant and machinery most feed millers produce feed for multiple species, including dogs, poultry, pigs and cattle. Many ingredients used in these feeds are highly toxic to horses. Despite often rigorous procedures history has shown that contamination of horse feed can and does occur in multi species feed mills, with consequences ranging from positive swabs and disqualification to sickness and even death. At Mitavite we take pride in the fact that we manufacture our horse feed at a dedicated equine only facility. As a further safeguard we strictly monitor raw material quality and integrity and work with “equine only” transport contractors to eliminate the risk of raw material contamination.
