She had been anxious about how she would cope with Literacy as she had struggled with this at Primary. However she and her mum were reassured by High School staff during the Lasswade High School Primary Transition Programme, who told her about the additional support she would have in S1. Danielle was pleased to find herself in small classes for English where she benefitted from additional support from her teacher. She also joined the S1 Literacy Group, instead of French, and by the end of S1 she was happy that she had begun to improve in both reading and spelling. She quickly discovered that she particularly enjoyed Home Economics and was encouraged to join the after school Cookery Club which she really enjoyed. Through this, the ‘Confidently U’ support group and some further 1:1 support she grew in confidence. In S2 Danielle continued in the Literacy Group. With encouragement from her Geography teacher she joined the school’s Eco group. She was involved in a project focused on tidying up the school grounds and enjoyed working with a different group of young people. She found that she was able to encourage some new S1 pupils, who were lacking in confidence, to get involved in environmental group work as well. Through her work she helped the school to gain their first Green Flag and felt confident enough to talk to a group of officials and the School’s Parent Council about the work that she had done. With support from the School’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) Worker, Danielle and a friend from the Eco group joined the ‘Respect Us’ anti-bullying working group. Danielle’s friend had been bullied at primary school and they both played a part in a campaign with some senior school buddies which involved designing a presentation for the school’s plasma information screens. In S3, through discussion with her mum and her Support for Learning teacher, Danielle chose to specialise in Home Economics and Fashion & Textiles as part of the elective opportunities in “Technologies and Expressive Arts” because she really enjoyed practical work. She also enjoyed Geography because she could see how it linked with her interest in the environment and she continued with this as well as Modern Studies. When the time came to specialise in a Science, she picked Horticulture because of her interest in the Eco group. In her S3 pupil profile, Danielle identified a keen interest in, and aptitude for, practical subjects. She had benefitted from being in smaller classes for English and Maths for the first 3 years and was able to say that she had improved in these areas as well as developing her confidence through additional supports. Senior Phase S4-6 Building on her achievements in the Broad, General Education, in S4 Danielle undertook one-year programmes of learning, leading to National 3 Qualifications in English, Geography, Horticulture and Personal Development as well as Life skills Maths and Hospitality at National 4. She also continued with programmes of learning in PE, RMPS and PSE. This gave her some additional time, during which she was able to undertake other options to prepare her for life beyond school. Danielle had already identified Childcare as her future career path and was able to attend college, one day a week, to undertake a qualification in Childcare. For her 4th year work experience she spent a week at a local nursery where she received a glowing report. With the support of the School’s dedicated Youth worker, Danielle began to undertake voluntary work, first in the Lasswade Centre school crèche and then at a local nursery where she read stories to the children. All of these experiences developed her understanding of the demands of a career in childcare as well as her confidence and interpersonal skills.

Danielle benefitted from the Personal Support offered by both her Pastoral Guidance teacher and her Support for Learning key teacher throughout the senior phase. She was supported to apply for a Bridging course at college which she moved to at the end of S4. This gave her the opportunity to develop her skills and confidence so that she could progress to a full time course in Early Education and Childcare. She hopes to work in a Nursery on completion of this course.
