Sports colours award ceremony.

Monday 8th October 2012 saw Lasswade HSC host its first school sports colour award ceremony. The aim of the awards was to promote excellence in sport. We were very honoured to have former pupil and bronze medal winning Paralympics swimmer Sean Fraser come along to be our speaker and present the awards. The award ceremony was opened by Mr Jaster who welcomed pupils and parents and thanked everyone for coming. Mrs Mitchell (Depute head teacher) then introduced Sean giving a brief overview of Sean’s achievements and how proud LHSC are of all he has done. Sean took to the stage and spoke about his main achievements to date and the experiences he has had along the way. He spoke very inspirationally and made it clear that if you work hard and apply yourself anything is possible. Mrs Burge (PE teacher /Sports coordinator) then started the formal presentations by praising pupils for their hard work and commitment to school sport. The first set of presentations was made to the school sports teams for their continued efforts and representing the school in their chosen activity. Pupils were awarded certificates and photographed alongside Sean, much to their embarrassment. The second set of presentations was to the sports people of the year. These awards were decided by the coaches/teachers who run the clubs and the recipients were selected from a range of criteria from biggest improvement made to most committed sportsperson. The final set of awards was the formal school sports colours; this is to award pupils who have displayed outstanding achievement, dedication and commitment as well as to recognise the service and contribution they make to sport. To be considered for the award pupils had to be nominated by a member of staff, peers, parents or themselves. There are 3 levels: the service award, half colours and full colours. The recipients of these awards had been nominated and then selected by the school sports colour committee to receive a certificated and a school pin badge bronze, silver or gold. The winners of the awards are on the school Website.
