From the Wheelhouse
I
sit here writing this on a sunny cold February morning. I am looking out at a partially frozen Little Traverse Bay. There are a pair of bald eagles perched on the ice looking for their next meal. It’s hard to believe in only 33 days we will be launching our first boats! We have just completed our winter boat show circuit. This was an especially exciting winter show season, with lots of new products and innovations, and a renewed enthusiasm from the growing interest in boating. The crowds this year were very large and were eagerly making their selections and purchases for the upcoming season. I have always looked forward to this time of the year. With the holidays behind us, I find myself in the middle of the boat show season thinking about our summer time on the water. Here at Walstrom Marine, we have a season of on the water events planned... from our season open

house and demo event to our Women in Boating classes to a spectacular summer cruise to the North Channel. I would like to personally encourage and welcome you to join us for any...or all of our events! Talking about and being on the water with our customers is what I like best about this job. Stories are shared, friendships are formed, memories are made. Hearing the stories of boating trips and adventures or recalling my own adventures and family time spent on the lake is what makes working in the boating industry so special to me. The team here at Walstrom Marine is dedicated to helping you enjoy your time on the water and making your own memories. I am eager to meet many of you this season and to hear about your memories on the water. See you on the lake!

RETIREMENTS DAVID LYLE
DAVE ALLERDING
TOM LYLE
Dave Lyle started working part time at Walstrom Marine in 1981 doing general labor in the service department. He later moved into boat deliveries and became a full-time salesman in 1983, eventually working his way up to Sales Manager. In 1991, Lyle was promoted to General Manager and then to President ten years later in 2001, a position he held for 15 year until his retirement. Dave now serves on the Board of Directors.
Originally joining the company in April 1981 as an outboard mechanic, Dave grew in knowledge of stern drives, generators, diesel engines, and beyond. He witnessed firsthand the progression of engines and boat technology. As a seasoned Marine Technician, Dave was a great asset to the service department, especially in the seasons’ commission and decommission periods.
Tom was visiting his brother, Dave Lyle, when he accepted a part time position with Walstrom Marine in June 1987. While meant to be just for one summer, it eventually evolved into a full time role in service, painting and varnishing. The next year, he was promoted to Store Manager and later helped establish the parts department in 1992. He became Parts Manager, a position he held until he retired.

It opened Memorial Day Weekend 2016 and has recently finished all of the renovations to its new location on Main Street, directly across the street from the new Lyric Theatre. Propellers carries fantastic resort wear collections for men, ladies, and children, as well as accessories and nautical gifts.
Multi-Purpose Heated Storage Building, Sales and Service, Harbor Springs The new on-site heated storage building is now complete! Demolition of the old 1960 building took place last summer, and construction soon followed. Located next to the Sales Showroom and connected to the Boaters Lounge, this multipurpose building stands tall with multiple overhead doors for Travelift access and large windows for visibility from passersby on Bay Street. It is the perfect space for showroom overflow of boats for sale, quick summertime work, or heated winter storage.

An impromptu outing or a planned destination ... Boating season is a much-welcomed and anticipated time of year for our customers and employees alike. We are proud that 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of our Cheboygan location! There have been many changes and much growth at our facility during the past three decades. Just this past year, our staff in Cheboygan has grown. We now boast a polish, wax, and detailing crew, fiberglass and gel coat specialists, and staff to do painting, varnishing, and cabinetry work. Our marine technicians handle routine items like oil, filter and impeller changes, engine and transmission maintenance, and servicing and installation of marine sanitation systems, in addition to more specialized work like running gear repair and repowering your vessel. Are you interested in updating your electronics or installing satellite TV on your boat? We can take care of that! We also provide mobile marine service and will go to your boat when problems arise to get you on your way. We offer both seasonal and transient dockage along the Cheboygan River, which is just downriver of the drawbridge and an excellent starting point for day trips to Bois Blanc or Mackinac Island, the Straits of Mackinac, or excursions to the Les Cheneaux Islands or the North Channel. Our docks are within walking distance of downtown shopping, dining, hotels, the movie theater, and the Opera House. Parking is available within close proximity to most of our docks, which have 30 and 50 amp hookup, water, and Wi-Fi. Our
Boaters' Bathrooms have showers, washer and dryer, dumpster, and free ice available for our dockage guests. It's never too early to arrange for winter storage for your boat. Our heated buildings tend to fill quickly, and space is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't delay! A 25% deposit, along with a signed contract and a copy of the certificate of insurance for your boat is all that is required to guarantee your storage space, and you can enjoy your summer on the water with no worries about having to search for storage at the last minute. Our Travelift has a 70-ton capacity, and the doors on our storage buildings have up to 31'5" clearance. We also have outside storage available.
Our parts department has been remodeled, and we invite you to come and peruse our shelves for various products to keep your boat looking ship-shape. If we don't have something in stock, we can order it with free, next-day shipping on most parts. May you enjoy your summer making memories on the water, and when night falls beneath a star-filled sky as water gently rocks your boat and you are lulled into a peaceful dockside (or anchored) slumber, rest assured that Walstrom Marine will be here when you need us. Your leisure is our business, and we continually strive to maximize both. We thank you for your continued patronage and look forward to serving you long into the future!

2017 Bay Harbor BY HI STOVER
Once again, for the 23rd time, the community of Bay Harbor comes alive as we enjoy the summer months in Northern Michigan. While clearly a resort that is open year-around, Bay Harbor shines in the summer. Let's see how brightly! Walstrom Marine has been at Bay Harbor from the very beginning in 1994, first as the Harbormaster for Bay Harbor Lake Marina and then with our second Propellers lifestyle store located in the downtown Bay Harbor business district, also known as The
UPDATE
Village at Bay Harbor. Eleven years ago, Walstrom Marine added a full time yacht broker with an office in the Propellers store to better serve the Bay Harbor boating community. The addition of a Bay Harbor Yacht Sales office has been a good one for both Bay Harbor and Walstrom Marine as not only sales services are provided, but the award-winning Walstrom Marine Service Department is available to assist with the daily service needs of seasonal and transient boaters alike. Currently, Walstrom Marine offers the full line of boats from Tiara, Pursuit, Chris-Craft and MJM as well as tenders available from Zodiac and Avon... and there will certainly be more to come! We make every effort to help locate the ideal product that best suits you and your family's boating needs.
As we move away from The Village at Bay Harbor waterfront, back to the main intersection downtown, you will see the outstanding progress being made with the construction of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. The GLCFA has been in the hearts and on the minds of many over the years. With the groundbreaking in the summer of 2016 and July 7th, 2018 set for the Gala Grand Opening, Northern Michigan is eager to be inspired, entertained, and educated by the many options available at The Center.
Throughout the Bay Harbor community, you will find restaurants and retail shops for your dining and shopping pleasure. Most are a short walk from your slip at the Bay Harbor Lake Marina. Be sure to stop in to Propellers and Walstrom Marine in The Village, kittycorner from the boat launch, and say hello. Welcome to Bay Harbor!

An OUNCE OF PREVENTION is Worth a Pound of Cure BY DAVID LESH
I
magine a foot of snow on the ground, D-Dock is locked in ice that is over a foot thick, and the snow is blowing so hard I cannot see Harbor Point from the Service Office. This is Harbor Springs in January. So it stands to reason that the Service team at Walstrom Marine would be hunkered down, taking it easy, and enjoying the slower pace. Not so fast! This is our chance to catch all of those issues on your boat that could potentially be weekend disasters. As many of you know, we offer an annual inspection of your boat, stem to stern, that catches everything from gel coat chips to blown head hoses. Our customers who take advantage of this service usually experience trouble free boating for the duration of the summer; ultimately, that is our goal. We want you to enjoy your boat while you can because it seems that summer gets shorter and shorter every year.
Many of the items that we find during our annual inspection are routine maintenance recommendations such as hose replacements, fluid changes, filter changes, etc. While these are all important items to keep up with, the real value of the annual inspection is the detection of the items that, if left unattended, would lead to large problems in the future. One recent example of this was the discovery of a slight amount of waste water in the bilge of a boat which prompted us to pressure test the holding tank. The pressure test led to the discovery of a hole on the underside of the aluminum holding tank. If left unrepaired, this hole would have grown over the next couple of years, and our customer would have had a real mess on their hands. Thankfully we were able to remove the tank and replace it with a new stainless steel tank which will last much longer than an aluminum tank.
Another such issue was the discovery of a very soft foredeck near the anchor locker on another boat. Upon inspection,we discovered that a large amount of plywood coring was rotten and in need of replacement. Not only is it unsettling to walk on a spongy deck, it can also be hazardous to the structural integrity of the boat. We removed the wet core material and replaced it with new closed cell foam coring which will prevent further moisture intrusion in the area. These are just a couple of examples that show the benefit of an annual inspection. Our goal is, and always has been, to maintain our customers’ boats to the highest of standards so that you are able to enjoy them for the summer. The last thing we want is for you to miss out on a weekend of boating because of something that could have been repaired the previous winter.

The Wheelway:
Walk, Bike, and Boat BY KIRSTEN BUCCIGROSSI
J
ust over a marathon's length of pure Little Traverse Bay, the Little Traverse Wheelway clocks in at 26.65 miles, to be exact. Stretching from downtown Harbor Springs to downtown Charlevoix, this public multi-use paved path has a little bit of everything, and quick access to much much more! • You are a runner training to hit your PR in an upcoming race... • You are with your family taking a casual walk with the dog... • You are a Tour De France cyclist riding from Harbor to Charlevoix and back... • You are taking out your unicycle, cruiser, or tandem for a sunset stroll...
THE WHEELWAY IS FOR YOU!
20 | walstrom.com
Staying at the Yachting Basin? We invite you to keep your bike in the Boater's Lounge or reserve one of our bikes available for customer use. Bay Street is a perfect starting point, as there is almost immediate access to the Wheelway. You can walk or ride on the main roads and trek up the hill to the actual trailhead at Kosequat Park on the corner of Hoyt and Main Street. Instead, here's our advice: make a right out of our Basin and Sales Showroom parking lot heading east on Bay Street. Make a right on Zoll and an immediate left onto Beach. You can take Beach all the way through scenic, winding sections of forest and pop out on M-119, picking up the Wheelway between the Airport and Petoskey State Park. When you head out on your boat for a day trip or overnight across the Bay to Petoskey or Bay Harbor or south to Charlevoix, keep in mind that you can pick up a different section of the Wheelway
wherever you are. It acts as the main vein connecting the three cities with ample trails and streets to access restaurants, shops, parks and preserves, waterfront scenic views, etc. Wherever you happen to be in Little Traverse Bay, find the Wheelway. You will instantly be connected to miles of fun by walking, biking, and boating! Visit www.trailscouncil.org/littletraverse-wheelway/ for additional information.

HERE COMES HAL!
Hal and Kay Reick on “Candide”
BY WARD WALSTROM
Hal Reick started boating as a teenager waterskiing with his high school friends. After high school, he joined the Navy where he cruised the North Atlantic and the Bahamas on a survey ship. When he married Kay, the two were destined to be on the water in some type of boat. The first boat was a 15 ft. wooden Snipe sailboat on Reed’s Lake in Grand Rapids. Next was a 27 ft. Catalina, kept for a short time and then, a 32 ft. Pearson. Hal and Kay cruised that boat from their home port of Eldeans in Holland, Michigan, with their small children to ports north including Northport and Mackinac Island. As typical boaters, Hal and Kay got the bug for a bigger boat and ordered a new C&C 36 rigged for racing. They raced the C&C with great success, winning several flags and hardware trophies. After two years of racing, they decided boating should again be a family adventure. Hal always told the family, “Once the boat
rounds the next point, we can sail.“ Kay added, “We would try several head sails and, by the time we reached port, the foredeck looked like a yard sale!” Their trips included visits to Harbor Springs where, at the time in the early eighties, boaters would anchor in front of the club, check in by radio with the harbormaster, and hope to be called for a slip the next morning. Although they loved sailing, the trips north at the 6-7 mph blistering pace tested Hal’s patience. Since Hal was a die-hard racer, he would not consider adding a dodger to the boat. As a result, the family enjoyed frequent spray from the waves of Lake Michigan. The Reicks concluded comfort and a faster trip north would be a great goal. Six powerboats later, from 31 ft. to 43 ft., they settled on the Tiara® 43 Sovran®. All of their boats have been named “Candide,” after the Broadway play based on Voltaire‘s novel. The theme is “the best of all possible worlds.” No matter what trouble the characters found themselves in, they always had that positive attitude which cannot be avoided when on a boat. On one of the Reick’s cruises from Holland to Harbor Springs, they noticed an empty slip on E-dock and considered moving their boat to one of their favorite
marinas. After discussing that possibility, Walstrom informed them that they could leave their 40 ft. aft cabin beauty in one of the 60 ft. slips. This was in 1986, and Reicks have been at Walstrom Marine at various locations with different boats ever since. Kay is a retired nursing professor from GVSU. Hal is a patent and trademark attorney with the firm of Price Heneveld in Grand Rapids. After only a short 45 years, he is semi-retired. The firm represents S2 Yachts in patent and trademark matters, and Hal has obtained several patents for S2 Yachts on various boat-related inventions. After selling their home in Harbor Springs, Reicks live on “Candide” on D-dock or “The Island” dock. They keep a 28’ Pursuit®, also purchased from Walstrom Marine, on B-dock as a fun boat for short trips to Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Boyne City. Reick’s favorite destinations include Leland and Mackinac Island. They have made several trips up the St. Mary’s River to Sault Saint Marie and enjoy passing the freighters and logging the ships they see. Hal enjoys boat projects and is frequently seen in Walstrom’s service and parts area, where, as Kay jokes, it is frequently heard, “Duck! Here comes Hal!”

TIARA Q44 Adventure Yacht
BY RICK VENNER
Introduced in 2015, the creative genius and successful founder of Tiara Yachts, Leon Slikkers helped design the Q with the goal of attracting people wanting to live a more active lifestyle while boating. The Q44 is versatile at its most basic premise. She works well for bringing along stand up paddleboards, kayaks, bicycles, scuba equipment, and anything that might be needed to explore a nearby port, beach, or remote island. Walstrom Marine learned firsthand how much fun and versatile she is when hull #2 went on our rendezvous to Mackinac Island. Comfort, social, safe, easy, and just fun was the best
way to sum up the reaction from skipper and guests. For 2017, Walstrom Marine recently brought into stock hull #21. What we have learned is just how safe and easy boaters have discovered her to be. With a walk around cabin (no climbing up and forward to access the docklines or anchor) and joystick driving in addition to joystick docking, the Q44 is the ultimate stress free and enjoyable boating experience. When running at any speed, you will notice right away the benefits of having two forward facing seats. Both are capable of comfortably holding two people each for a total of four that get to enjoy the view and exhilaration of boating out on the open water.

TIARA Q44 Adventure Yacht
Continued from previous page Comparable yachts in her size or category just aren’t available with such a friendly layout. The entry into the helm area is by way of full size power doors on each side of the cabinhouse and the additional benefit of walking from bow to stern and throughout the helm and aft decks, all on a flush, single level deck. The interior is luxurious, starting with a split head. On the starboard side you have a private vanity sink head compartment. To the port is a separate shower stall with seat. The main cabin comes with two options for sleeping. The first is a vee made up of two bench seats that scissor together to form a single modified queen size berth. The second option, that came as a result of customer feedback, is the tried and true modified queen pedestal berth. Walstrom Marine opted to bring our newest Q44 in with the more week-end cruiser friendly pedestal bed. Great storage underneath as well. Michigan State Waterways Commission Update BY WARD WALSTROM, WATERWAYS COMMISSIONER
T
he Waterways Commission passed a resolution of support for the transfer of the balance from the 2013 Emergency Dredging Plan to fund improvements at a number of Grant-in Aid and State marinas and boating access sites (BAS) including South Haven S. Side Marina, L’Anse Marina, Ontonagon Municipal Marina, Belleville Lake East BAS, Eagle Lake BAS, and Torch Lake BAS. Funding was also committed for improvements at the Portage Lake Channel. The Waterways Commission toured the St. Clair Boat Harbor in April and two Sault Ste. Marie marinas, Pine River BAS, and Conely Point BAS, in June. In August, the Commission toured Frankfort Municipal Marina and the municipal BAS, as well as the Crystal Lake BAS and an undeveloped BAS property. In October, the former Au Gres State Harbor, Au Gres River Mouth BAS, and the East Tawas State Harbor were toured. The Commission addressed concerns from a private marina operator regarding dockage rates between State and private marinas. Linnae Dawson was appointed as the new Harbor Coordinator and visited various marinas and Harbor Commissions throughout the state. For two days in July, Waterways, in conjunction with MBIA, sponsored WJR radio station broadcasting from a boat on a marina tour in the Detroit area. This joint marketing effort with private marinas helped increase public awareness of the Waterways Commission activities and opportunities for boating enthusiasts to enjoy the marinas and boating access sites available. The Michigan Boating Newsletter is now reaching out to over 35,000 boaters in the state. The commission was made aware of an increase in the number of paddle
boarders and kayakers using State Waterways’ Facilities. Reservations at marinas through the reservation system were up 12% for 2016. Dredging and dock construction was underway for 50+ transient slips in East Tawas State Harbor. Also, Fayette Historic State Park Harbor had a new floating dock system installed with the addition of power pedestals and finger piers. A study of the Grand River Waterway began in 2016. Additional Capital Outlay Projects Funded in 2016 were East Tawas State Harbor, White Lake BAS, Allegan Dam BAS, Bergland Dock BAS, Otsego State Park BAS, and Lake Skegemog BAS. Projects receiving grant approval were Crescent Shores improvements in Long Lake Township, Mackinaw City Marina pier widening and new power pedestals, Village of Pentwater sea wall repair, Cedarville Harbormaster Building, electrical improvements at Elk Rapids Marina, City of Harrisville dock replacement and Cheboygan County Marina replacement of fuel tanks and dock improvements. In December, the Waterways meeting coincided with the Annual Meeting of MBIA
in Lansing. A representative of the DEQ was present at the Waterways meeting. A motion was passed to recommend to the DEQ lowering its bottomland lease rate from 10% to 5%, providing immediate relief to private marinas and to re-evaluating the method of calculating the annual lease fee. Some commissioners who attended the MBIA Harbormaster’s meeting explained the role of the Waterways Commission and offered opportunities for public and private marinas to work together more closely, including sharing facilities, marketing efforts, etc. The Michigan State Waterways Commission works to provide safe public access to the Great Lakes and inland waters of the State of Michigan. Working with the Department of Natural Resources, the Commission oversees the use of dedicated funds provided by boaters for the acquisition, construction and operation of marinas and boating access sites to support boating throughout the state. Pure Pursuit Dual Consoles Defined BY HI STOVER The four boat Dual Console model series from Pursuit expands on everything we have come to know and love about the Pursuit brand, particularly robust construction and exceptional seakeeping capabilities. We are all familiar with Pursuit's class-leading Offshore series of cabin boats as well as their legendary center consoles. Now, with the Dual Console series, Pursuit has enhanced weather protection like the cabin boats and expands on the utility of the center consoles. Comprised of 23', 26', 29', and 32' offerings, the DC series has something for everyone. All have fold-away aft cockpit seating that transforms the area for water sports or fishing. There's an aft cockpit table available for expanded entertainment options. The forward seating or bow rider areas are all deep with a table that converts to a sunpad. The deep bow seating areas promote a feeling of safety and security, lacking on a typical bow rider. Each boat has a console with head compartment complete with dockside
pumpout. The other console provides a huge additional storage area that is fully finished off. Hardtops are standard on the three larger boats. The DC295 and the DC325 both have taller windshields that directly connect to the hardtop, providing complete weather protection. The two largest boats can both be ordered with Joystick docking. Finally, the DC 325 takes everything a step further with a generator and air conditioning being available. Functionally, the Dual Consoles mimic the walk-thru capabilities found on center consoles which keep the crew and passengers safely inside the vessel. With all four boats being built to Pursuit’s industry-leading standards, the fit, finish, and attention to detail are legendary. Another Pursuit standard is the well-known Pursuit ride. The Pursuit Dual Consoles are all blue water boats capable of venturing offshore for fun, fishing, or travel. Classic good looks compliment Pursuit's history of building exceptional boats. Come and explore the Pursuit Dual Consoles at Walstrom Marine today. You'll find them to be Pure Pursuit!

Chris-Craft The Modern Center Console BY HI STOVER & STEVE WOLFE
S
tarted in 1874, Chris-Craft has built most boat shapes and sizes, beginning with small prams and building up to their largest build ever, the 74' Chris-Craft Roamer Flush Deck, built from 1973-1979. Today, ChrisCraft continues to produce a wide range of models from the closed-deck Corsairs and Capris to the bow rider configurations found in the Launches and Calypsos. Our focus here is on one of the newest model series from Chris-Craft, the Catalina Center Console Series. Specifically, we are going to share with you the features and benefits of the new Catalina 34 Center Console, a relative newcomer to the center console market. When you think of a new Chris-Craft and their design DNA, you may think that it would be a challenge even for Chris-Craft to enter into a market segment like center consoles. You can breathe a sigh of relief because you will be dazzled when you see our stock Catalina 34! We recently attended the Detroit Boat Show with the Catalina 34. Everyone who came into the booth would just stand and stare, then add the comment that this boat is hands down the winner of the show in style, features, and content...and that is with most of the center console manufacturers being represented.
40 | walstrom.com
Let's take a walk-thru and see what the Catalina 34 has to offer. As you approach the boat, you will note that power comes from twin Mercury Verado 350s with the Joystick Piloting option. Known for their quiet and fuel-efficient power delivery, the 350s push the Catalina 34 to a speed into the mid 50s while riding on a beautifullypainted, fountain blue, soft-riding, 21-degree deadrise hull. Note the matching painted engines and the underside of the hardtop. As we board through the hull-side boarding and dive door, we appreciate the easy access that this new feature provides. The cockpit area that we board into is an amazing area of the boat. Front and center is the complete multi-function galley with grill, sink, two-burner stove, icemaker, microwave and refrigerator. Everything... including the kitchen sink! The galley is adjacent to the cockpit seating with a transom seat, outboard fold-down seating, and a teak dining and cocktail table with dedicated storage. Overhead is the manually-operated, pull-out sunshade. Moving forward to the helm and console, you discover three-abreast seating with armrests and bolsters facing the most modern Garmin Glass Cockpit electronics suite available including closed array
radar. The Mercury Marine Joystick Piloting system provides effortless close-quarter maneuvering and docking capabilities and also has integrated auto-pilot at speed. As we transit forward on the port side, we open the articulating door to the interior of the console and discover full weekending accommodations. This is an area of the boat that surprises everyone by providing a double berth forward, a hidden head aft and a vessel sink to starboard. The console cabin is cooled and heated by a standard 12V air conditioning system that also feeds ducted air to the helm. Up in the pointy end, there is more to discover. The forward sunpad cleverly conceals an additional sunpad extension that opens forward, filling the entire bow with sunpad and seating. Below the sunpad is the storage for the forward cocktail and dining table. Further up in the bow is the anchor locker covering the windlass. Note that the teak decking used is PlasTEAK, offering both aesthetics and utility. This first Catalina 34 should be one of many, based on initial reactions. Be sure to contact us, as the Catalina 34 will soon find a home and is guaranteed to provide her new owners years of boating enjoyment a la Chris-Craft.

Protect Our Waters for Future Generations Three important tips for responsible boating BY JENNIFER MCKAY
42 | walstrom.com
While most boaters appreciate the natural resources that abound in the watersheds in which they recreate, many are unaware of the impacts boating can have upon those resources. Water pollution problems associated with boating include discharges of oil, fuel, sewage, trash, fishing line, toxic cleaning and maintenance products, bottom paints, and invasive aquatic species. While boaters may only contribute a small portion of the overall pollution entering our waters, the cumulative impacts can be considerable.
BOATERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE EVERYDAY BY FOLLOWING THE SIMPLE ACTIONS LISTED BELOW.
1 STOP THE INVASION Aquatic invasive species are organisms that have been introduced either intentionally or unintentionally into an area where they did not historically occur. These non-native species often have no natural enemies to limit their reproduction and spread, enabling them to out-compete native species and, in the process, disrupt entire ecosystems. Recreational vessels play a critical role in the spread of invasive species in freshwater systems through organisms inadvertently retained in live wells, bait wells, bilge pumps, motors, and on boat hulls, trailers, and equipment. You can help control the spread of these alien species by taking simple actions every time you remove your boat from the water regardless of whether you know the lake is infested or not.
2 KEEPING IT CLEAN Even though there are some detergents and cleansers that are better to use than others, there is no such thing as a detergent that is safe for the environment. Even detergents labeled “environmentally friendly” and “non-toxic” may contain ingredients harmful to aquatic organisms. Additionally, the use of cleaners with phosphates can cause excessive algae growth in our waterways.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Whatever you take aboard, bring back. • Contain trash – do not let trash get thrown or blown overboard and if it does, retrieve it and dispose of it properly on shore. • Do not toss cigarette butts overboard. • Purchase refreshments in recyclable containers and recycle them. • Recycle used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, and batteries.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Wash your boat frequently with fresh water – rinsing after each use will reduce the need for cleansers, can help stop marine growth and will extend the life of the protective coating.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Remove visible mud, plants, fish, or animals from your boat, trailer, or other equipment (anchor, centerboards, props, etc.) before leaving the water. • Drain all water from live wells, bilges, motor, transom, and other containers before leaving launch area. • Wash your boat, trailer, and equipment thoroughly with hot water (120 140 degrees) to remove plants and organisms that were not visible at the boat launch. • Allow your boat to dry for a minimum of 5 days in a sunny location before transferring into a new body of water. • Do not release live bait or aquarium pets into any waters. • Discard fish waste in the trash.
each time a boater goes out on a boat. Much of this waste can be significantly reduced with the simple act of recycling and a little common sense.
• Use alternative cleaning products such as baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and borax - and don’t forget about the power of “elbow grease”. • If you use detergents, use phosphate-free, bio-degradable, and non-toxic cleaners sparingly to minimize the amount discharged into the water. • Avoid cleaning your boat in the slip or dockside – wash your boat on land in an area that allows for infiltration of wash water, such as gravel or grass.
3 REMOVE AND RECYCLE Trash tossed or blown overboard, left on the beach or dockside is not only ugly, but also poses a hazard to humans and wildlife. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, recreational boaters dispose of approximately 422,000 tons of garbage into U.S. waters yearly. This amounts to an average of more than one pound of trash
• Recycle used monofilament fishing line at your marina or tackle shop. The health of our waters and our boating legacy depends on all of us – the future truly lies in our hands. By being a responsible boater you can lessen your impact on the environment and serve as good stewards of our precious recreational resources. The small, extra effort required to practice clean boating makes sense for our family’s health and safety, for the environment, and for the future of recreational boating. For additional tips on clean boating and ways to protect our water resources, visit www.watershedcouncil.org. Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council speaks for our members including full-time and seasonal residents, lake associations, and businesses. We work to maintain the environmental integrity and economic and aesthetic values of lakes, streams, wetlands, and ground water in Northern Michigan, as well as statewide and throughout the Great Lakes Basin. As the lead organization for water resources protection in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet Counties, the Watershed Council is working to preserve the heritage of Northern Michigan – a tradition built around our magnificent waters.

MJM’s 35z: The Luxury of Effortless Driving BY KIRSTEN BUCCIGROSSI
MJM introduces what other outboard brands are still tirelessly seeking... performance and comfort all -in-one. As an all-weather family boat, the new 35z shows off a stunning design with tried and true versatility. Style, performance, fuel efficiency, and comfort, the MJM 35z is in a class of its own!
44 | walstrom.com
You can read all you want about MJM's "new, unique wet pre-preg, postcure, epoxy composite construction." During a tour of the plant, you are further affirmed of how unique and boastworthy this process truly is. Superior material is hand laid in a time-consuming, but quality-ensuring, manner creating a stronger, lighter and longer-lasting hull. The modified deep-V hull has a noticeably greater waterline length-to-beam ratio. It is no surprise that this hull shape allows the boat underway to gain stability the faster it goes. Along with joystick docking control, GPS stationkeeping, and optional Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, it doesn't get much better than this! The 35z is very obviously a versatile family vessel, and it sets a new standard of luxury in allweather comfort. Designed to be certified at the highest rating for stability and seaworthiness for a boat under 40 ft, you can feel it all for yourself, first hand aboard a 35z! ...and did we mentioned the fuel efficiency? Not many manufacturers can boast an Eco-smart luxury boat. 300+ mile cruising range and 50+ mph speeds are achieved with twin 300s and only 250 gallons of fuel capacity. Aside from just the ride, below deck is just as worthy of highlighting. You'll immediately notice a continuation of its elegance throughout. Made very apparent that it's a sea-going boat, it also shows off the classic dĂŠcor, antique white paneling, clear gloss finished teak, holly cabin sole, and satin finished cherry joinerwork and
hull sidings. With headroom a spacious 6'2", a pair of almost 7 ft. long berths with optional double berth conversion, and ample storage for all of the destinations on your wishlist, this boat is made for just about anyone! The capacity on this boat continues to impress as you move to the galley, with plenty of storage above and below the counter. Furthermore, there are two lockers in the cabin sole, a hanging locker and head with shower, plus a deck shower on the transom. To balance the airiness and light with the upper deck, seven hull ports, portlights, and deck hatches bring the feel of the open water to the space below. As the ink hits the page on this issue of Docklines, the 35z Hulls #1 and #2 are in production in MJM's plant in Boston. One thing we know for sure, they will follow MJM's "Sea Trialed to "0" Defects Before Delivery" guarantee. Leaving nothing to chance, each and every yacht MJM builds is launched and sea trialed prior to delivery. Thorough tests of systems and calibration of instruments are conducted to ensure "0" defects. Our customers should not be satisfied with anything less than the best. It is no surprise then that, when it comes to timeless design, the latest technology, functionality and performance, Walstrom and MJM see eye to eye.

BOATING MADE EASY Joysticks and Gyros!
BY HI STOVER
Ah, yes, the boating lifestyle! What great fun for the whole family or a group of friends! For a reasonably accomplished boater, pulling away from and coming back to the slip or dock is not worrisome. And once away from the dock, typically things continue to improve. Introduce wind, waves, boat traffic, and an audience...or any combination thereof. Now this is downright stressful! Take heart! There are Joysticks and Gyros that will make your time afloat easier and more comfortable. Let's discuss joysticks first. Introduced by Volvo on the 2006 Tiara 40' Sovran for the US market, the first Inboard Performance System (IPS) with joystick docking became an overnight sensation. The IPS Joystick made, and continues to make, docking in difficult conditions child's play. The throttled device offers 360 degree control and has since afforded new boaters exceptional control over their new boat. The IPS Joystick
was rapidly expanded across all boat brands and now is close to a necessity to participate in the new boat market. Shortly after the introduction of the Volvo IPS Joystick, Mercury Marine came to market with their Zeus Joystick Piloting system for pod drives which was followed shortly by their Axius Joystick Piloting system for sterndrives. Mercury and Yamaha quickly followed up the inboard power offerings by applying the joystick docking technology to their larger twin outboard offerings. Today, virtually all propulsion systems are available with a joystick, clearly making docking difficulties a thing of the past. Two years ago, Volvo introduced the IPS Plus, the second generation of their successful IPS system. The most unique new feature on IPS Plus is Joystick Driving. The top right button on the joystick activates the joystick as the new helm. All you need to do is set your throttles at your desired cruising speed. When activated, the joystick can
now steer the boat at speed. The autopilot is also engaged simultaneously, keeping the boat heading on a straight course. The creation of the joystick for docking and driving of pleasure craft is clearly the single most important technology to impact boating in the past ten years. So, after joysticks, what's next? From all accounts, the next new big thing is going to be the gyro stabilizer. Sea Keeper has been working overtime to keep up with the demand for this new technology. It is being applied to boats 30' and longer and the target roll reduction is 95%! Have you ever been on a boat that rocked and rolled past your comfort level? Of course! We all have! Think of the impact on your boating whether you are under way, at the dock, or at anchor and to be able to reduce roll by up to 95%. Just like the amazing impact that joysticks are having, gyro stabilizers are poised to achieve the same.

THE ALLINCLUSIVE Boating Experience BY JOEL SHOEMAKER
Walstrom Marine has long been known as a full service marina. What does that mean, exactly, you may ask. The most simplified definition is exactly what we’ve built our reputation on over the last 70 years. The criteria of which, while somewhat vague, typically includes a combination of sales, service, storage, and dockage. As we all know, there is so much more to boating than that! Picture this... You have been planning for months! Your itinerary is set, your bags are packed, and a weekend getaway to Leland or a week-long trip to the North Channel is finally in your sights. Just think... what if all you had to do was pull into the parking area, load your personal items, and board? Sounds nice, right? We would love for you to be able to step aboard your clean, fueled, and provisioned boat all ready for you to put on

In 2014, Walstrom Marine helped support the Nehemiah Homeless Shelter in Petoskey in the building of Hope Hall. This new building offers the guests a warm place during the day in winter months, a place to seek employment opportunities, learn a new life skill, and gather for holidays and special events. In addition to private donations, Nehemiah receives additional funding through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Emergency Shelter Program with certain conditions. Last fall, homeless shelters became aware of possible requirements to be open 24 hours instead of 5pm to 8am and to admit those who are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. These new requirements, if adopted, would
Our employees are given the opportunity to choose charities for the company to support. increase costs and could cause Nehemiah to close. In response to this new challenge, Walstrom Marine and Ward and Mari Margaret Walstrom have created two separate accounts at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation to benefit The Nehemiah Project. The Nehemiah Project Endowment Fund and The Nehemiah Project Fund are investment vehicles to help sustain the ministry into the future. These funds will allow Nehemiah to build a reserve for the purpose of creating a firm financial foundation without government assistance. With the endowment fund, donors can be sure their gift will provide a source of lasting support as the gift itself is preserved “in Perpetuity” and only the investment earnings can be used for operations. In the words of David Jones, Executive Director of the Petoskey-Harbor Community Foundation, “An endowment fund for a nonprofit agency is a great way to support the long-term sustainability of the organization. Over time, with market growth and additional new gifts, the endowment fund will continue to grow in strength. Market growth alone is fine, but we know that some years the growth is not as robust as others. That is why steady, additional gifts to the endowment from individuals and businesses are so important.” For more information and how you can help donate to the fund, contact The Nehemiah Project at (231) 347-0363 or the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation at (231) 348-5820.
Walstrom Marine was once again a proud sponsor of the 2016 Mighty Mac Swim. Named the “Michigan Open Water Championship,” the Mighty Mac Swim supports the good works of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, funding building projects for American heroes, particularly Michigan Military Veterans and First Responders. The Mighty Mac Swim is an epic annual race across the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s peninsulas, participants swimming alongside the iconic Mackinac Bridge.
SOME FUN STATS:
• 37 of some of the world’s best athletes entered in 2016; 30 finished. • $200,000 was raised for Habitat for Humanity of Michigan in the 2016 Mighty Mac Swim. The total for the two years combined was nearly $700,000! • In 2015, the Mighty Mac Swim became the 12th largest charitable swimming fundraiser in the HISTORY OF THE WORLD! • The 2016 race, unlike the previous year, was sanctioned by the World Open Water Swimming Association and members of both the World Open Water Swimming Series (WOWSS) and the Global Swim Series (GSS). • $20,000 prize money was awarded to each gold medalist male and female swimmers. Many thanks to Jim “The Shark” Dreyer and his team of volunteers, all of the swimmers, sponsors, media outlets covering the race, and all others who made this event possible. A final thanks to Walstrom employees, Rick Venner, Hi Stover, and Kirsten Buccigrossi, for volunteering to help captain and crew, the Tiara 44 Coupe Media Boat and the Tiara 29 Coronet Race Monitor Boat.

NIGHTMARE in Horton Bay BY WARD WALSTROM
My favorite boating trips include anchoring in a safe harbor and falling asleep on the hook. Horton Bay is one of my favorite harbors in which to anchor for reminiscing visits during my youthful days with our family. Mom and Dad bought the Horton Bay Lodge, 35 acres and 1,100’ on Horton Bay in the middle 70s. On a Saturday in early September with just myself and Sir Watson, our 12-year-old Labrador, we departed Harbor Springs heading 270 into the late afternoon sun and an easy SW wind. My plan was dinner and overnight anchor in Horton Bay.
58 | walstrom.com
I was dying to try the tapas at the Horton Bay General Store. There were only a few other boats anchored when we pulled into Horton Bay. I dropped the hook in about 12’ of water, I considered safe with a west wind leaving the boat in about 15-20’. After a swim, I kayaked to shore and walked up the narrow road to the store. Chip escorted me to a table in a charming back room with comfortable chairs and pictures of Hemingway and unusual paraphernalia on the walls. The varieties of tapas (or small bites) were most delightful. After listening to the live music and enjoying the chatter around the room, I left, proceeding back down the straight road to the shore and paddled back to Maritime. It was dead calm, and the anchor line was limp in the water; a perfect night. After putting Watson to bed on the aft deck, I crawled into my cozy bunk. No lapping on the hull and hardly a sound in the harbor allowed me to fall into a deep, restful sleep, dreaming of the stars passing above. Sometime in the middle of night, I awoke to a slapping of waves on the hull. I thought it odd because I was anchored close enough to the west shore to protect from any wind from the north, south and west. I quickly realized the wind must be from the east. This was not the best place to anchor in an east wind but not dangerous
if you are in the middle. Just as quickly, I realized I could be in a predicament because I anchored closer to the west shore. To check to see if my fear was real, I hastily dressed and went to the chart plotter. Maritime had swung 180, leaving it too close to shore in only 3’ of water. So there I was in the dark of night, thinking... if I don’t move and the wind picks up and the anchor drags, I could wind up on the beach! I started the engines and went to the bow. By then, the wind was SE up to 15 kts. I hauled up anchor, but, where the chain connected to rope, the windlass just slipped, not taking any more in. The situation was getting worse! I had no choice except to haul the anchor with chain up by hand in the dark. That was time consuming, but not nearly as dreadful as the thought of getting back to the helm in time before I ran aground. I don’t know how, but I made it! Still not being able to see much, I managed to work my way out of Horton Bay with a heading to Boyne City. Around 4am, exhausted, I tied up to the dock in front of Cafe Santé and went back to sleep, thankful to get out of Horton Bay. Throughout the ordeal, Watson calmly laid on his bed, trusting me as dogs do, for surviving our “Nightmare in Horton Bay.”

Somewhere on the Shore BY WARD WALSTROM
Somewhere on the shore of the Lake they called Michigami, A passion grew from a covered dock. From the bottom of the lake, Springs brought up cold, fresh water, Springs that gave birth to eternal deep blue water. Wide expanse of open water unbroken by the shore Boats float on open water not needing more Except a harbor, safe, and deep, With a church and bluff that is steep To stop the cold wind from sweeping, To allow Ships to unload passengers. From a harbor of docks and moorings and morning fog, A boy watches from a dock. Crews dressed in khakis and caps and topsiders, Decks swabbed and oiled, Each night, lanterns hung, Berths tucked and lines coiled. The wind gathers clouds to fill sails And teach lessons to captains and gulls and to warn beyond. Turbulent waves rolling, overtaking, capsizing, Widows watch in the darkness before the fisherman returns, Now snug in the harbor, snug in the bunk, Sleep to swinging, to lines stretching, Dreaming of safe passage to the next shore. Fixed, fueled, repaired, sail away friend. Farewell to this port, Know it well, now explore. Return again to find the dock and the boy Waiting, missing, protecting The boat that comes in once more.
