Hikers will love the trails, and the climb up the 462 steps to the top of Avalanche will get your blood pumping. The Lake Charlevoix view from the top is well worth the effort, and the trip down will seem like a breeze. Bear River Valley Recreation Area Lake Street to Standish Ave., Petoskey bit.ly/BearRiver This scenic natural park features a roaring whitewater river, whitewater kayaking, a 1.1-mile paved bike trail, improved nature trails that follow the river, and park amenities that include restrooms, picnic shelters, a skate park, sand volleyball courts and river access.

A map highlights featured preserves that offer trails, boardwalks, and access to the water. Seasonal field trips are offered, generally at no charge, including many programs just for children. Just a few miles north of Harbor Springs is Thorne Swift Nature Center, which includes an interpretive nature center, pond, dune overlook, and three easy trails that end at Lake Michigan. Preserve maps and guides are available online, at local chambers of commerce or download the conservancy app on your phone – search LTC Explorer. Here you’ll find informative guided hatchery tours, weekly nature programs, self-guided hiking/nature trails, interpretive exhibits and interactive displays. Kids and adults will enjoy watching fish through the glass of the stream viewing chamber. Special programs for families and groups are available by appointment. Admission and programs are free! If the weather decides to change, try the padded indoor walking track free of charge. The North Country Trail Northcountrytrail.org The longest scenic trail in the United States is the North Country Trail - stretching 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. Part of this beautiful trail goes through Petoskey (a designated trail town), and Harbor Springs on the opposite side of Little Traverse Bay.
