Ventures Enterprising News & Ideas for Nutrition Entrepreneurs

Helping You Grow through Effective Communication Rosanne Rust, MS, RDN, LDN Chair

Welcome to another year with Nutrition Entrepreneurs DPG! I am so honored to be chair for the 2017-2018 year, following in the footsteps of so many colleagues I admire. As someone who makes a living stringing words together, I believe in effective communication. I love creating messages that people will read, or crafting a blog post that really resonates. My goal is to inspire and inform, and I hope I can lead NE with the same inspiration. Since many of the most popular member benefits of NE include our webinars and this newsletter, I’ve pinned “Communication” as our theme for the year. We already do a great job and I hope to help get news and resources out to our members in an even more effective way going forward. So let’s begin. We have some big things planned for NEDPG this year. In the wings, we are creating a brand-new form of communication for our members that we believe will be vibrant, engaging, personalized and fun. We’re also gearing up for the Academy’s 100-year celebration and the Second Century. Members who count on our fabulous FNCE® Networking Event won’t be disappointed as we embark on plans to knock this year’s event out of the park (go, Cubbies!). Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 22, 2017, for this year’s event. The Executive Committee worked very hard last year on a plan to optimize member benefits. Part of this plan included a restructuring of the Executive Committee (EC) which leads the organization. We refined some of the job descriptions, modified the

reporting structure and added positions to both involve more NE members and also lighten the workload for volunteers. We hope to continue to create opportunities for our members to network, learn from one another and grow, per our mission: Inspiring and cultivating entrepreneurs through a community dedicated to supporting infinite success.

I’ll never forget the first day I felt like a success in my business. It was a little over a year after I started my business. After the inevitable initial slow period, I was starting to see that slow and steady growth I had been working toward. I was regularly signing new clients. Business was profitable and increasing each month. By all measurable outcomes, my business was growing.

For a month, business was at a standstill. I hadn’t signed a single new client. An online product I launched barely sold. And I was rejected again and again in my networking attempts. After looking at my income and expenses for the month, I broke down in tears to my husband, crying that I was a failure. What he said next completely changed my outlook. He asked, “If money were no object, would you still be doing what you’re doing?” “Well … of course!”

“Then you’re not a failure,” he said, matter of factly. With that, I suddenly felt like a success. That moment stuck with me. Not only has it helped me weather the usual ups and downs of entrepreneurship, but it’s helped me make decisions that have grown and improved my business in a way that feels authentic to me and honors my needs. Making the decision to open a business is never just about money – it’s about creating a space that allows you to help people to the best of your ability, and to be able to do work that you enjoy. Recently, I made the decision to stop doing something that was profitable that I didn’t enjoy doing. It was a hard decision, but I knew that if money were no object, I would have tossed it long ago. While it may mean less income for a while, it gives me room to grow my business in the areas I actually do enjoy. I hope this issue will help you look beyond income and learn to measure your success in a way that does more than grow profit, but creates a business you love!

I Never

Could Have

Imagined Julie Beyer, MA, RDN Outgoing Authors Specialty Group Leader Nearly 20 years ago I was diagnosed with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC), and I went from being fully active to nearly bedridden. As I navigated treatments, the only “diet” distributed for this puzzling condition was a photocopied, patient-produced, good food/bad food list. Who could have known then what I would have both learned from and contributed to the IC community today? 1. Just because there isn’t evidence doesn’t mean it isn’t true. It just means there isn’t research yet. Within months of diagnosis, my family got an AOL Internet-enabled computer. (Some of you probably don’t even realize that not all computers could access the Internet back then, did you?) I immediately found

a goldmine of wisdom, an electronic message board where patients shared their stories, treatments, and offered support for what had previously been an extremely isolating condition. In addition, patients were exploring lifestyle changes that the doctors just didn’t understand at the time. These patients were paving the way. 2. Everything you learn prepares you for your next step, even if you don’t know what that is. In 1998, my children were older and I was beginning to explore full-time work again. Eventually, as I began to manage my condition both medically and with diet, people found out I was a dietitian. “Write a book,” they all said. “Write a book,” I thought? No way. Then I saw an ad for a self-publishing class at my local high school. Four books later…

protocol, and research into IC and diet is happening all over the country. What experiences have you had or people have you met that have paved the way for you in your career? Have you had any unexpected detours that resulted in a more fulfilling career?

Julie Beyer, MA, RDN, is the author of four books including You CAN Write a Book: The No-Nonsense Guide to Self-Publishing. In addition to coaching dietitians on communication strategies, Julie is always happy to share her expertise about all things Disney. She has visited Disney World a couple times a year for the past 40 years, and now enjoys the "magic" with her four adorable granddaughters two sets of twins!

3. One person can make an enormous impact. As a modest person, I find it hard to share this, but I want everyone reading this to reflect on their own accomplishments in the same way, so here it goes. In 1998 many IC doctors didn’t “believe” that diet could make a difference in IC/bladder pain patients. Today, as a direct result of my books, presentations and my relationships with other dietitians in the IC community, dietary modification is now part of the first-line treatment

“positive pull.” This emphasizes the benefits that one will get if the goal is reached or the action is taken.

Lesli Bitel, MBA, RDN, LDN Outgoing Coaches Specialty Group Leader

The negative pull is a powerful strategy and there are times when you should use it for sure. But get this: it appears that clients and customers tend to become more loyal and long-term fans when the majority of what they experience from you is the positive pull.

Newsletters, blogs, no-cost webinars and social media posts are all great ways to stay in contact with your tribe, raise the perception of you as an expert and attract new clients. But there is another important thing that all these tools can achieve. It’s what marketing guru Frank Kern calls “Results In Advance.”

So how do you create marketing that is more positive than negative? That’s where ResultsIn-Advance comes in. The idea here is to strengthen the weak effect of the positive pull by, very early on, giving your potential clients a taste of what it would be like to reach their goals.

A lot of marketing is based on the so-called “negative push” mechanism that we humans all have. The potential client is made aware of the negative aspects of where she/he is now and the relief from these things that will come if a certain goal is reached or action is taken. The opposite of this is called the

You need to know your clients’ most heartfelt, deepest desire. This is the experience that they hope to have by achieving their dreams. Someone might say she/he wants to lose ten pounds, but the person may really want the experience of feeling empowered, confident and comfortable in her/his clothes again.

Based on the steps you will be taking them on, what could you teach them, show them or enlighten them with what would give them a glimpse of where they are heading in a really visceral way? You want this “taste” to bring them one step closer to their deepest desires. Creating these “little wins” early on will make them believe in you and want more and more of what you offer. As a result, your clients will not only be able to be more motivated to achieve their desired outcomes, they’ll LOVE you for helping them to stay focused on the positive.

Lesli Bitel, MBA, RDN, LDN, is the happy owner of Lesli Bitel Coaching (www.LesliBitel.com). As a business success coach and mentor to integrative nutrition professionals, Lesli teaches her clients to overcome the all-too-common sense of overwhelm and confusion that’s associated with the business side of running a successful practice. When she’s not coaching her rockstar, RDN clients, you will find Lesli traveling with her husband and two teenage kids, goofing around with their two-year-old Labradoodle Rocky or reading cooking blogs.

Seven Pinterest Strategies

to Market and Grow Your Business

Susan Mitchell, PhD, RDN, LDN, FAND Technology and Social Media Specialty Group Chair Are you Pin-interested? If not, you may be when you find out the power of Pinterest, the digital version of items pinned to a bulletin board. Pinterest can help grow your business and create greater brand awareness with the trifecta of increased credibility, brand value and traffic to your website. Of its 150 million users, 84% use Pinterest across multiple devices and 81% are female. Pinterest is a tremendous social media site for a food-related professional or business, making it perfect for registered dietitian nutritionists. Shared images of mouthwatering food will engage your followers to find out more about what you offer. Where men are from Google+, women are from Pinterest - and women of all generations love it. Whether you use Pinterest for your business or a business you work for, it’s worth considering as another layer to your social media plan. Get SMART to determine if Pinterest is right for your business.

If you decide Pinterest is right for your business, utilize these seven smart strategies to power up your Pinterest presence: 1. Create a business Pinterest account so you have access to analytics. Add your Pinterest URL to your signature and anywhere you include links to your social media. 2. As you start to follow others on Pinterest, go to your Pinterest news feed and LIKE or Comment on pins to increase exposure. 3. When you pin, add the URL to your blogs and other social media posts when appropriate. 4. Use a call to action in the pin description such as “Click this pin to see… ” 5. Think big-picture keywords in the captions of your pins. 6. Add Pins within your blogs or articles. 7. Tweet a Pin of the Day: #PinoftheDay with a link to a popular pin.

Rebecca Bitzer, MS, RD, LD, CEDRD Outgoing Private Practice Specialty Group Chair

It is important to focus on good values which are reality-based, socially constructive, immediate and controllable. Examples of good, healthy values include honesty, innovation, vulnerability, self-respect and creativity. Are you living your life as though these are your priorities?

As a Rebel Dietitian, I am attracted to alternative ideas. I recently read the book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*CK: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, by Mark Manson. It definitely captured my attention because I tend to “care” too much. So what is this book about and what golden nuggets would be helpful to those in private practice? Manson includes stories to illustrate his points from Buddha, heavy metal bands (including Metallica and Megadeath) and rockstars like the Beatles.

Is pleasure a worthy goal? Pleasure is not a goal that will bring happiness. The example Manson gives is the man who almost ate himself to death. How did pleasure help him solve his problems?

Here is what inspired me:

Is material success a worthy goal? Is working 24/7 really your value or is it preventing you from a more important value like compassion?

Growing Your Business:

1. Exposure: Take (and make) opportunities to get in front of your target audience in a helpful way by offering value instead of just “selling.” Let your audience know what specific value you offer them – everything from free information and products to services/products you sell.

It’s All About

Relationships. Melissa Joy Dobbins, MS, RDN, CDE Outgoing Speakers and Media Specialty Group Chair When I think about measuring outcomes, money is honestly not the first thing that comes to mind. That doesn’t mean money isn’t important to my business. Of course it is. But instead, I think about relationships. I believe, and have witnessed, that the money (and the fulfillment) flows precisely from this stream. As your outgoing NE Speakers & Media Chair I’d like to share a few tips that have helped me measure outcomes that translate into growth, money and success:

8

Self-improvement is all about prioritizing better values and better things for you to “care” about. What are you choosing to “care” about?

2. Engagement: Potential clients want to know some of your “numbers.” Be sure to track that information so you can easily share it. Don’t compare yourself to others; instead, highlight your unique assets. For example, if you’re in a large media market, you may not be able to secure as many segments as dietitians in smaller media markets, but your audience reach will be larger. I do more podcasting than blogging, so tracking my podcasting downloads is essential. My Twitter followers are over 10K but I actually see more engagement from Facebook. 3. Evaluations: Seek, collect and compile feedback from your media and speaking gigs. Use that information to help you

The key points of the book, illustrated by many thought-provoking stories, is that it is important to: n Pay attention to your values and be willing to adjust them as needed n Take action and avoid procrastination n Learn to “care” about only what is truly important to you and not get sidetracked by things that are not important. And most important, stop making excuses and get on with your life and your business!

pitch future gigs and continue to improve and hone your skills. Ask your contacts for testimonials to share on your website or LinkedIn. This is a great way to share your value with potential clients. As I pass the baton to your incoming Speakers & Media Specialty Group Leader, I want to leave you with my mantra: It’s all about relationships. Any time you talk, listen and get to know a new colleague or client, you have an opportunity to connect and collaborate with others. It’s through these relationships that growth, success and money will follow.

Melissa Dobbins, MS, RD, CDE, relishes time with her family, even while working on podcasts and blogs with her 16-yearold daughter. Melissa’s eight-year-old son says she is “fun, happy and surprisingly good at chess.” Her computer-geek husband is finally on board with all of her “Twittering” because U.S. News and World Report recently named her as one of 10 Dietitians You Should Follow on Social Media.

Enterprising News & Ideas for Nutrition Entrepreneurs

Rachael Hartley 1898 Calhoun St. Bldg #8 Columbia, SC 29201

Are you

Attracting Poor Outcomes? Chere Bork, MS, RDN Abundance Ambassador A successful nutrition entrepreneur business means a robust bottom line serving delightful clients and creating a joy-filled home life. But all too often our beliefs prevent us from creating this successful life we desire. Do you know your beliefs become your reality? What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for. You become what you believe. Even though you cannot control things that happen, you can control your attitude toward what happens; in other words you can control your beliefs. Here are three ways your beliefs could be getting in the way of your own success: You are letting past mistakes haunt you.

Everyone makes mistakes. Mistakes make you feel stuck. Mistakes are learning vehicles. Decide today you are not the sum of your past mistakes. Decide today your mistakes created you to be better and stronger. Sometimes the best lessons are what we learned from mistakes we made, not just the hard work we poured into a project.

what is going great in your life instead of the one client who didn’t hire you.

You are letting comparisons of other nutrition entrepreneurs devour you.

“One's own thought is one's world. What a person thinks is what he becomes - That is the eternal mystery.” -The Upanishads (800-600 BC)

Comparisons drain your soul and dampen your spirit. Comparisons make you feel stuck. Comparisons are definitely not a productivity booster. Decide today that you have special gifts that this world needs. A successful nutrition entrepreneur acknowledges that her/his competitors can be her/his champions. You are assuming the worst and take things personally. A potential client doesn’t hire you. You want to give up. Decide today you are doing your best. Decide today it is okay to get many no answers before you get a yes. Decide today you only need a few clients not hundreds at a time for a successful, satisfying and balanced work and family life. Decide today to focus on

A successful nutrition entrepreneur knows and believes that she/he will have a vibrant and satisfying private practice through persistent, consistent actions and that what she/he focuses on gets bigger and bolder.
