Dear Friends, One evening each year, we have the great honor and privilege to celebrate our previous year’s accomplishments with all of you who made them possible – our dedicated family of contributors. With your generous support, McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation received more than $4.5 million in donations in 2016 and disbursed more than $3.4 million for the benefit of our patients, and all who care for them (see page 5). From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Looking ahead, the coming year promises great opportunities and changes. We will continue working hard to secure leadership gifts for the largest capital campaign in our history, with plans to transition from the quiet to public phase in mid-2018 (see timeline on page 6). As many of you may know, we will see a change in Foundation leadership with our beloved Moon Seagren retiring in December and her successor, Patrick Schulte, joining the Foundation team this month. While we are truly sad to see Moon leave, we feel very fortunate to have hired Patrick (see page 4). We hope that you enjoy tonight’s event and we thank you for helping us to make McLaren Northern Michigan the best place for physicians to practice, for colleagues to work, and most importantly, for patients to receive care. Warmly,

Elise F. Hayes

McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation Leadership Transition After more than two decades of service, Moon Seagren will be retiring in December 2017. While not an easy decision, it is the right one for Moon and her family. Moon loves this hospital, all of the wonderful people who support it, and the work she feels blessed to do every day. For over 20 years, Moon has been a visionary and leader for McLaren Northern Michigan and the Foundation, passionately fundraising on behalf of our patients and all involved in their care. Time and again, Moon has surpassed expectations. Her many accomplishments include: In the last 10 years, Moon oversaw and directed the disbursement of over $64 million to the Petoskey Campus, Cheboygan Campus, VitalCare and Hospices, and Boulder Park Terrace.

Leading successful campaigns to fund:

major equipment, such as the 64-Slice CT, Digital Mammography, Mobile Diagnostic Unit, EKG equipment, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), and Heart Bypass. building projects such as the Heart & Vascular Center, Emergency Department, John and Marnie Demmer Wellness Pavilion & Dialysis Center, Boulder Park Terrace, and the New Wing. programs such as the Nurse Liaisons, Autism Program, Guardian Angels, Trauma Center designation, and Physician Recruitment and Retention.

Developing a professional fundraising program that exceeds industry standards, making Moon a sought-after speaker at national conferences

McLaren Northern Michigan and the Foundation are deeply grateful for Moon’s exceptional leadership and contributions to the organization’s success. Moon’s Mantra (ask any Foundation colleague!): Why Are We Here? For the PATIENTS!

Introducing Patrick J. Schulte, CFRE McLaren Northern Michigan is pleased to share that Patrick J. Schulte, CFRE has been hired to transition in as theVice President and Chief Development Officer. Patrick brings nine years of successful experience as the V.P. and Chief Development Officer for Ascension | St. John Providence located in southeastern Michigan. In addition to Patrick’s fundraising and management expertise, he has ties to our area as a longtime visitor to his family’s summer home in Menonaqua. Patrick will start in his new position this month. Moon and Patrick will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition and to maintain momentum with the

capital campaign.

Robert “Ham” Schirmer has been one of McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation’s strongest advocates with his support and leadership spanning almost three decades. As a board member and contributor, Ham embodies the role of a volunteer solicitor, inspiring friends and neighbors to extend their own philanthropy to include McLaren Northern Michigan. Ham has devoted his time, expertise and wisdom to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation Board since 2009, serving as Board Chair and liaison to the McLaren Northern Michigan Board from 2012 to 2015. As a leader, he believed that actions often speak louder than words and it was during this time that he and Barb established the Schirmer Family Fund. This fund provides support for the Oncology program, Colleague Continuing Education, or the area of greatest need. It was also during this time that Ham committed to ensuring future support of quality health care in northern Michigan by arranging for a gift of life insurance.

Congratulations Robert “Ham” Schirmer

for being named our 2017 Jack Clark Philanthropy Award Recipient!

His deep passion for our mission, personal commitment to the hospital and his leadership of our board helped to successfully steer the Foundation through important milestone events including the merger with McLaren Health Care, the integration of the Cheboygan Campus fundraising program, and the acquisition of new equipment and technology for the Hospital Ham’s tenure is marked by the Foundation’s success in securing over $22 million in contributions and investing $12.6 million in equipment, technology, programs and education for the benefit of patients throughout the 22 county service area. Perhaps most impressive of all is the humility and kind heartedness with which he approaches his responsibilities. With gratitude and admiration, we are honored to celebrate Ham Schirmer as the 2017 Jack Clark Award Recipient.
