From the Wheelhouse

I

am writing this having just returned from the Sea Ray Yacht Expo held on Captiva Island, Florida. A great time was had by all as we enjoyed friends, food and drink, and our love of boating. I was once again reminded that, wherever I am, boaters have one thing in common: passion. I think back to my childhood growing up in Columbus, Ohio. Getting our first boat when I was 12 years old changed our world. Our family became passionate about boating and spending as much time on Lake Erie as we could. We fished, cruised, and skied with our various boats as I was growing up. It didn’t seem to matter what we did as long as we were doing it on the water. My most memorable moments growing up are of our times boating. My children also grew up on the water. Most of their summer vacations were spent with mom and dad on a boat trip somewhere, usually for a rendezvous or a

4 | walstrom.com

cruise that we were leading. While it was part of my job, how could I think of this as work? I was spending time with my family doing what I love. My children now talk with the same passion that I have about their childhood boating memories. This issue of Docklines is all about sharing with and showing you our passion. Whether it’s a trip to the North Channel, a Women in Boating class, or the Bay Harbor Boat Show, we love serving you, our boating family and friends. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by a team that shares this passion. We love to see our customers making memories with family and friends. Our job here at Walstrom is to create the opportunity for you to make memories. Webster’s Dictionary defines passion as “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.” Please give us the opportunity to show you our passion!

See you on the water!

Cheboygan:

Boaters’ Best Kept Secret When one thinks of boating, they conjure up images of relaxation on the water, traveling from port to port, or dropping anchor to enjoy a peaceful afternoon in the sunshine or a romantic night beneath the stars. Some imagine fishing, while others anticipate zipping across the water with the wind in their hair. Others envision a home away from home, adrift on the water. The boating experience varies widely depending upon the preference of the individual, but the universal focus is on enjoying leisure time with family and friends. At Walstrom Marine, we love to see you maximizing your time on the water. When problems arise, as they sometimes do, we do our best to get you on your way promptly, with minimal interruption in your plans. To achieve this, Walstrom Marine makes an ongoing investment in training and continuing education for our employees, to ensure we have a skilled staff to handle your boating needs. We have certified technicians to repair Mercury outboards, Mercury inboards, and Mercruiser I/Os, and to install or repair Mercury Joystick Piloting Controls. Our crew includes Yamaha Master techs and techs certified in Volvo gas and stern drives. We can repower outboard, I/O, and inboard boats, and install bow and/or stern thrusters, and have technicians who have attended Ferretti Service University, and are familiar with Azimut, Pershing, and Riva yachts. Our knowledgeable staff includes

By Heather Lake

NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) certified installers, Garmin installers, and we can install customized electronics packages on your boat to suit your needs. We also service Navionics, install FLIR infrared cameras and audiovisual equipment, and install and service KVH satellite television systems.

Our finish department does custom woodworking and fabrication, installation and refinishing of teak and holly flooring and tile installation. We do fiberglass and gel coat repair and can color-match gel coat to your boat. We also offer customized painting. Along with our versatile service department, our parts department has access to thousands of parts, most of them available next day, and offers free delivery to local marinas. We have both transient and seasonal dockage and once again will be offering a highly discounted seasonal dockage rate in Cheboygan for the summer of 2018, with an added value of a 25-cent per gallon discount on fuel. Our heated storage buildings are clean and spacious and allow our technicians the opportunity to complete any repairs or modifications to your vessel during the off-season. Free pickup and delivery of your boat to and from storage and other amenities are included in the storage fee, and storage customers also receive a 25-cent per gallon

discount on fuel. Contact us for details! We are proud to maintain our Clean Marina status and have continued to invest in our equipment to ensure proper operation and safety standards and in tools to improve efficiency. We recently installed compressed air throughout our buildings to operate our tools. We also make improvements to our buildings in order to maintain a safe environment in which to house your boat during the winter months. When you entrust your boat to Walstrom Marine, we want you to rest assured that it is in good hands with trained professionals who are dedicated to providing you the exceptional service that you've come to expect during our thirtyone years in Cheboygan and the seventytwo year history of our operation. That peace of mind leads back to the overall purpose of boating ... relaxation.

BY RICK VENNER

The desire of Ward Walstrom and management to open a facility in Traverse City was there for years. In May of 2017, it finally happened after Walstrom Marine filled out the product line offerings which gave us the confidence to expand our reach. Walstrom Marine acquired the Sea Ray dealership status for all of Northern Michigan, boosting the already great offerings from Tiara Yachts, Pursuit, and Chris-Craft Boats. Rick Venner, who was then Sales Manager in Harbor Springs, assumed the role of overseeing the new location as manager and yacht sales. Chuck New came on board as operations manager and all around customer support, and Sandy Frye committed to full time boat sales. Service is on hand and supported as well by the entire team that makes up Walstrom Marine at our Harbor Springs, Cheboygan, Bay Harbor, and Charlevoix locations.

18 | walstrom.com

TRAVERSE CITY: Putting the “Grand” in Grand Traverse Bay Doors opened in May of 2017, and, much to our delight, we were well received because of our reputation of over 70 years of selling and servicing in Northern Michigan. We underestimated the demand for boats and had a hard time keeping and getting enough supply. Changes

By Dave Lesh & Charlie Duray

A

s the years have gone by, technology has outpaced the marine industry by a wide margin. Where the economy of scale may have allowed auto manufacturers and the like to make great strides, the marine industry has, until recently, been riding the shirt tails of technological advancements. And they are catching up quite rapidly. With all of this new technology comes the need to have Technicians trained in the many facets of repairs nowadays. In the old days, a diesel was just that, but now we have throttle by wire, drive pods, joysticks for everything from outboards to large water jet powered mega yachts and stabilizers that utilize gyroscopic force to maintain a boat’s riding attitude and reduce rolling, even at the dock. Schools have become a very important part of a Technician’s life as there are classes on line as well as instructor led classes at the manufacturer’s locations.

22 | walstrom.com

Harbor Springs Service Building Just recently, we have students signed up to attend Mercruiser Joystick Control School, Pursuit Tech, AwlGrip Refinishing School, Volvo Gas and Sterndrive Classes, Volvo Vodia Diagnostic Classes, Tiara Tech, Ferretti Service School, IPS Classes, Yamahas Continued Education Classes, Seakeeper Classes, Garmin Installation Class, ABYC Standards Classes. This is all in an effort to “keep up” with our changing world, small as it may be. It also gives us the ability to add to our ever expanding capabilities as a one stop shop for all of your service needs. We now have a state of the art paint shop capable of painting boats up to 55’ in length and four full time paint technicians between our Harbor Springs yard and our

Cheboygan yard. We are also now doing bow and stern thruster installations in house using Side Power thrusters. Over the years, we’ve had many requests for these installations, but we have relied on subcontractors to provide the service. Going forward, we will be able to do these installations faster and more economically for our customers by offering this service in house. As marine technology advances across all systems, we will continue to further our technical training and provide the latest in diagnostic equipment to better serve the northern Michigan boating community. Summers are short, and the faster we can repair an issue means the more time on the water for you, our customer.

THE END OF STANDARD DEFINITION By Rick Heiny & Dana Chapman

Similar to the image quality of a DVD, standard definition (SDTV) was one of the first steps into the digital television era. Introduced in 1994 for DirecTV, SDTV offered a superior audio and visual experience versus what you could get out of the old rabbit ears or even cable. But just like every form of electronic media, its replacement was already in the works. DirecTV knew that one day high definition (HDTV) would take the place of SDTV. As the demand for HDTV grew over the next decade, new DirecTV satellites were launched into orbit. These modern

satellites were built to provide HDTV broadcasting only; thus sealing the fate of SDTV. During the first quarter of 2019, DirecTV will end its SDTV programming after 25 years. Without getting too technical, when DirecTV makes this transition, they will be updating the software in the satellite. This new software will not be recognized by older marine satellite TV systems. So what does this mean to boaters enjoying DirecTV SDTV programming? Sorry to say, but if they are currently using a satellite system built before 2013, then 2018 may be the last season to use it. In order to continue watching DirecTV programming, you will need to upgrade your system. As of now, there are plenty of units available from the major marine satellite TV manufactures to meet current demand. Rebates and promotions are still available from these companies as well. However, when DirecTV flicks the HDTV switch in early 2019, tens of thousands of units will

instantly stop working. The laws of supply and demand could drive up pricing and some manufacturers plan on suspending their rebate programs. The good news is that there is still some time to plan. The knowledgeable staff at Walstrom Marine is more than happy to discuss the satellite TV options that best suit your needs. And should you decide to upgrade, our team of skilled and certified marine electronics installers can get you up and running with the newest satellite systems available.

SEA RAY Signature By Steve Wolfe

28 | walstrom.com

How can a boat such as the Sea Ray 510 Sundancer Signature enhance your boating experience? That is quite a question. Enhance: a verb; intensify, increase, or further improve the quality, value, or extent of. A boat that can enhance your boating experience? The Sea Ray 510 Sundancer Signature is exactly that boat. It may seem very simple, a new boat would always enhance your boating experience. This boat is different. Intensify your experience. The lines of this boat are intense. Do they make your heart race? Increase your experience. An increase of usage is expected if you owned this boat. Improve the quality of your experience. This boat is quality, American Made quality. Value of your experience. The value of family time, cruising time, and even dock sitting is increased 10 fold. Extent of your experience. Will you go far, how often, can you extend to your limits of imagination? Step aboard. The transformation to another world is immediate. Notice the huge swim platform and ample cockpit. The gathering place for most boats is the outside space. Can you see yourself watching your kids or grandkids swimming? How about sitting down with friends to have an evening cocktail and watch the sun set? Perhaps a meal on the dining table. The grill is located in close proximity

to the table as well as all galley items you need to make a meal. The cockpit and salon flow seamlessly between one another. The sliding glass doors open fully to a wonderful open and airy salon. There is a huge skylight that opens, and there is virtually no canvas to give you fits. The helm seat will swivel into the middle of the salon to give more seating for conversations. Please, move to a position behind the wheel. Take a look around. Can you see all four corners of the boat? Docking the boat will be easy with the help of the joystick. Touch screen navigation, perfectly positioned controls will make running this boat a breeze. By the way, at cruise speed the noise level in the salon is very quiet. Normal conversations can be carried on, and fatigue is lessened because the

engines are mounted in the back of the boat. Let's take a look downstairs. Have you noticed how much light there is below? An atrium style dash eliminates the dash that, in previous models, would run from the helm to the windshield. The galley down feature on this boat is open and spacious. People down in the galley or lower salon do not feel separated from the upper salon with the open atrium. The lower salon is very inviting. A great area for relaxing, watching TV, or gaming. The master stateroom is aft. Full beamed, and again, with very large windows making it open and airy. Plenty of storage and headroom, this is an oasis, not a stateroom. Your guest stateroom creates another great space. It is so nice, your guests may never leave. You may also not want to leave. Last, but not least, let's move to the bow of the boat. How do the sidewalks feel? Nice and wide? Grab handles placed in places you naturally grab? The walk around is designed for easy access to the bow. The forward sun pad also is a natural gathering outside space on the boat. Many hours of enjoyment can be spent just sitting on the bow, watching the world go by. The Sea Ray 510 Sundancer Signature is indeed a very special boat. Walstrom Marine would be pleased if you would take the opportunity to experience it for yourself!

Fresh Sea Jay & Shawna Owen

32 | walstrom.com

BY WARD WALSTROM

Jay and Shawna live in Chicago, in the city. They look at the beautiful horizon of Lake Michigan everyday from their apartment window. Jay and Shawna met while working in New York City. Their children, Amelia and Bo, were born in Chicago. Jay is President of an investment firm he founded, and Shawna is President of Huffman Travel. As a family, they enjoy adventure travel which has taken them to New Zealand, Australia, France, and Italy. Jay grew up in Palm Beach, Florida. His paternal grandfather was an avid boater who introduced Jay to the love of the water and power boating. Jay’s family lived on the Intracoastal Waterway, so his first means of transportation was a 15 foot Boston Whaler. He recalls using the boat to visit friends, water ski, wake board, and explore Florida waterways. In the summer, his family took their Tiara to the Bahamas. They would spend several weeks every summer cruising the Abaco Islands, fishing, diving, and anchoring off pristine beaches. It was during that time that Jay fell in love with the ocean and the ability to explore remote harbors and beaches on a boat. He also fell in love with the smell of the water and watching the sunset on the horizon. He recalls catching his first trophy fish, a 6 foot sailfish, off the back of the 31 foot Tiara near Palm Beach. The 45 minute fight to land the fish deepened his interest in sport fishing and boating. Jay left Florida to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and subsequently work in Amsterdam, Paris and

New York before coming back to Chicago. During that time, he no longer had the opportunity to enjoy boating outside of vacation back to Palm Beach to visit his parents. Shawna had not grown up with boats. She grew up in Dayton, attended Colby College and then Dartmouth for her MBA. She then settled in New York City working as a management consultant. About 10 years ago, they bought a home in Harbor Springs (Wequetonsing) to be closer to Shawna’s family who has vacationed in Harbor Springs for over 60 years. Shawna had grown up spending summers in Harbor Springs and wanted the children to have the same summer experience she had. For Jay, it had been many years since he had skippered a boat and had no experience boating in the Great Lakes. They purchased a 25 foot ChrisCraft from Walstrom and kept it in the Basin. They have enjoyed many afternoon picnics at Menonaqua Beach or the Point and memorable sunset cruises and rides to and from Bay Harbor or Petoskey for dinner. They also taught their children to water ski and tube behind that boat. With Amelia and Bo reaching an age where they could drive boats, the family purchased a 15 foot Boston Whaler, much like the one Jay had as a child. With boating licenses in hand, Amelia and Bo have driven countless hours around the harbor practicing. There were lessons on docking, anchoring, and navigating the waters of Little Traverse Bay. Along the way, they have built their confidence to pilot larger boats in the future.

All of this continued to grow their interest in expanding their boating life which led to the purchase of a 36 foot Christ-Craft. Suddenly, they had the opportunity to spend overnights and explore Charlevoix and Beaver Island. In 2017, they purchased a 44 Tiara Coupe which dramatically opened possibilities of exploring the Great Lakes. This past summer, their trips took them to Traverse City, Northport, Charlevoix, Mackinac, Drummond Island, Gore Bay, Killarney and the Benjamins in the North Channel. The Tiara is the perfect boat for the Owen family. It has plenty of cabin space to live comfortably during overnights. The console has plenty of room to accommodate numerous friends for an evening cruise as well. One highlight is the hydraulic swim platform that transforms into a beach club at anchor. They also love the large storage garage at the stern that allows them to pack various water toys. Most importantly, the solid Tiara build makes everyone feel safe when the weather turns and the sea gets sloppy. Boating as a family has brought them together. Everyone works together to pilot the boat. Bo and Amelia have become adept at reading charts and looking at the weather radar, and the family has come to better understand the power and the beauty of the Great Lakes. The family loves the boat because it gives everyone time to be together, especially as the kids grow older. They cook, clean the boat, play games, and enjoy the surroundings. It is truly a magical time for all!

THE PERFECT BLEND of Boats & Cars

Tom & Chucki Gale

BY HI STOVER

Tom Gale's first memories of boating go back to the 1950s and a 12' Yellow Jacket with a 30hp Lark outboard at the family cottage. With a molded birch hull, it was before the switch to the new fiberglass construction material. Chucki, fortunate to grow up on a lake, started with a wooden row boat and helped her uncle to paint the bottom. Roots this deep into the boating lifestyle have stood the test of time with Tom and Chucki Gale, long-time boaters in Northern Michigan. You may recognize the name Tom Gale from his storied career with Chrysler automotive design from the 1960s until his retirement in 2000. Tom was influential with mainstream designs like the Dodge Neon, LH sedans, the minivan, Dodge pickups, and such legendary, still sought-after designs as the Prowler, PT Cruiser, and Dodge Viper. Have a little fun, and check out the Chrysler Atlantic concept car. It's absolutely stunning! The Gales’ desire to spend time on the waters of the midwest continued from their youth into their early married years. Their fleet included more outboards, ski boats, and a 15' Mutineer sailboat. Tom 34 | walstrom.com

and Chucki have a humorous story to share about the challenges of launching the Mutineer. It’s quite funny and similar to launch ramp stories that several could tell. An 18'6" Sea Ray was purchased for the Gale family's first cottage. As is often does, the boating lifestyle evolves, the cottage was sold, and the boat stayed. After finding a seasonal condo at the Harborage in Boyne City, a slip was needed for the 18' Sea Ray. The 36' slip dwarfed the 18' boat, causing Tom to wonder if it was an industry ploy to get boaters to move up. Looking at twentysomething bowriders quickly changed to securing a 33 Sea Ray Sundancer. The 33 Sundancer was the start of something big for Tom and Chucki. Their first big cruise from the Harborage to Harbor Springs caught them with foul weather for their Sunday return to Boyne City. Now, that's a surprise for a boater! That first "Big Wave" day was when the Gales determined that boats can't be big enough. From the 33 Sundancer on, every couple of years brought a larger and larger Sea Ray, moving from gas to diesel power and even

having picnics on the boat while it was in winter storage. 2006 brought a significant change to a Hatteras 63 Raised Pilothouse. Actively entertaining and cruising the 63 for years, the Gales solidified their involvement in the boating lifestyle. Fast forward to 2018, and Tom and Chucki have just taken delivery of their latest vessel, a Sea Ray 510 Sundancer. Incorporating the latest in Joystick technology with her Cummins/Zeus pod drives, the 51 Sundancer brings an ease of operation and modern style to an individual with a keen eye for the latest and greatest. As you are cruising the waters of the Northern Great Lakes, keep an eye out for Tom and Chucki on their new 51 Sundancer. You will meet an approachable and enjoyable couple and family, filled the joy of boating.

TWO for ONE

Rick & Donna Simonton

What do you do when you can’t decide between the timeless style of a beautiful Chris-Craft, and the expansive entertaining features of a fantastic Sea Ray? Ask Rick and Donna Simonton of Sutton’s Bay. When Rick Simonton visited our Traverse City showroom dreaming about a beautiful new 25’ Chris-Craft Launch, he surely couldn’t have predicted the eventual outcome. Rick and Donna were invited to hop aboard the Chris-Craft for a sea trial— everyone was very excited. This would be love at first sight, right? Well, not really. Donna was not as enamored with the ChrisCraft as Rick was. Although the Chris-Craft is indeed a beautiful boat, it lacked some

of the entertainment features that Donna desired to entertain 6-8 people at a time. Rick was crushed; his dream of that new Chris-Craft was waning away. Back at the dealership, Donna was introduced to a big, beautiful, black and grey Sea Ray 270 SDX. With two tables, many cup holders and room for 10-12 people in multiple social zones, the Simonton’s new entertainment boat was presenting itself ... all while Rick was gazing across the lot at his Chris-Craft dream boat. It was suggested to Rick that he take a look at the Chris-Craft 21’ Capri that was front and center in the showroom. It’s a stunning runabout with a black and grey hull, teak heritage trim, and 350 hp under her sun pad. This is a fantastic boat with style, power, and the classic Chris-Craft vertical stem and tumblehome lines that make her a vessel of distinction. Rick’s eyes

were bright with the notion of that ChrisCraft, but then relayed that this boat would not satisfy the entertainment needs of their family. That’s when the creative idea was offered that the Sea Ray 270 and the Chris-Craft 21 were both black and grey and would look great “together” at the end of their dock. Yes, as crazy as it sounds, the suggestion was made that instead of a one boat compromise, TWO boats may be the answer. Donna is now able to entertain in grand fashion aboard their Sea Ray 270 SDX, while Rick grins ear to ear putting that beautiful Chris-Craft Capri through her paces out on the waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Welcome to the Walstrom family, Rick and Donna Simonton. So…Who else would like a new boat? … or two?

TIARA YACHTS

Always Innovating! By Hi Stover

In 1946, at age 18, Leon Slikkers left the family farm in Holland, Michigan and went to work for the then local boat builder, Chris-Craft. Some years later, in 1956, Leon started his own boat building company, Slickcraft, working with the then new material, fiberglass. In 1974, S2 Yachts was formed to become the parent company for the new Tiara and Pursuit brands. From building his first wooden boats with Chris-Craft back in 1946 to the extensive lines offered by Tiara and Pursuit in 2018, innovation has always led Leon and the Slikkers family to build a better boat with new style and

features never before seen. The 2018 Tiara line deserves a very close look with exceptional new offerings introduced alongside consistent strong performers.

The Tiara lineup for 2018 offers eleven models over five series. The Tiara Series consists of the boats that we have come to know and love as the Opens and Coronets. Offered in 31, 39, and 43 foot lengths, these boats are solid performers and have consistently delivered for a wide range of boating styles. The large, open cockpits and traditional inboard propulsion systems stand the test of time. And with the Coronet trims and decors, Tiara introduced one of the first "day boats" a number of years ago. (Walstrom Marine, working with one of our progressive customers, created the "Harbor Edition" 29 Coronet. The Harbor Edition 29 Coronet went on

Continued on next page walstrom.com | 39

TIARA YACHTS Always Innovating! Continued from previous page to become one of Tiara's most popular models and is sought after today even after production of the model stopped ten years ago.) Next up is the Tiara Convertible Series. Tiara Convertibles are built for offshore performance and onboard comfort. From the vantage point of a large, open flybridge, your panoramic view of the sea and its possibilities are endless. Designed and rigged for bluewater adventure, the Tiara Convertible Series features everything a serious angler could need, including confidence - standard. The Coupe Series has been a great success story for Tiara. The Coupes built on the Sovran Series with a number of enhancements incorporated from customer feedback. The Coupes, available in 39, 44, and 53 foot lengths, have brought the galley up and aft, placing it between the cockpit and the salon, easily accessible for expanded entertaining options. The counterbalanced sliding salon doors eliminate the need for any canvas, and as with all Tiaras, wide side decks make moving around the boat a breeze. The Coupe Series offerings are powered by the popular Volvo IPS pod drive system,

40 | walstrom.com

combined with Joystick control. The latest IPS now incorporates Joystick Driving as well as further expanding the functionality of the system. An interesting side note Tiara built the first boat for the US market to incorporate the Volvo IPS system, the Tiara 43 Sovran for 2006. The popularity of the Coupe spawned the expansion of the lineup with the addition of the Flybridge Series, essentially, the 44 and 53 Coupes with the addition of a large flybridge. This configuration meets the needs of many boaters looking to expand their living space and keeping the footprint a particular size. Tiara's latest innovation is so new and such a departure from their previous offerings, that a new brand had to be created to properly tell the story. Tiara Sport is the new brand that is showcasing Tiara's newest model, the Tiara Sport 38 LS. From her outboard power... Whoa! Outboards on a Tiara? Absolutely! Try

triple Yamaha 350s as standard to deliver a 55 mph top speed, the fastest Tiara yet, and with the quiet operation and great economy that modern outboards are known for. A Joystick is available, and the Garmin touchscreen electronics are the state of the art. The new hull, specially designed for the 38 LS, delivers the ride and comfort that you have come to expect from Tiara. Tiara's designers carefully integrated forward seating, easily accessible from the side deck. The aft seating system is truly amazing. With the flip of a lever, the seat rotates 180 degrees, facing the swim platform and transforming the entertaining possibilities. There's an outside galley aft of the helm seat and awnings available fore and aft for maximum sun protection. There is even a small cabin, done to Tiara's high standards, perfect for overnighting or weekending with a double berth and a separate enclosed head. The new Tiara Sport 38 LS breaks the mold of traditional Tiaras. Demand is already high, and supplies will be limited in this first year of production. Contact your Walstrom Marine yacht sales specialist today for the latest information on this exciting new offering.

LUXURY SPORT IN MOTION The 38 LS is the new gold standard of luxury sport yachting - a fusion of sophistication and performance that surpasses expectations. Functionality has never been so refined, with walk-around capabilities, island-style outdoor galley and bridge & lounge seats reachable via both port and starboard entries. Multiple and easily-accessible social zones allow friends and family of all ages to experience a myriad of waterplay activities, to grill & dine in the open air, or enjoy luxury lounging via a convertible sun pad, elegant cabin and aft cockpit areas. Wrap-around forward bow seating provides even more space to laze and enjoy time on the water together. Powered by triple Yamaha 350’s, she will boast performance, power and sleek styling. A glass cockpit and integrated electronics, including Garmin marine navigation systems provide ease-of-use for the Captain, and optional Yamaha Helm Master Joystick steering provides additional control whether underway or docking. Activity for 2017

BY WARD WALSTROM During 2017, the first phase of the East Tawas State Harbor Project was completed with pier construction to support 54 transient slips equipped with utility pedestals, new landside marina entranceway with seawall, and attendant building. In planning for future pier replacement, the commission requested DNR staff to research floating pier vendors for increased life expectancy and alternative construction methods. In April, the commission met in Douglas/Saugatuck. Members were informed of a pending grant for a non-motorized water trail connecting Richmond, a DNR site, Wade’s Bayou, and Coghlin Park. The commission approved a resolution for the Kalamazoo Lake superfund project. The Chestonia Bridge Boating Access Site (BAS) spanning the Jordan

River was relocated and built through a partnership with the Antrim County Road Commission. This project created a substantially improved access point for rafters, canoeists, and kayakers that utilize the Jordan River for a range of boating activities. Boyne City completed its engineering for phase one for a new floating break wall. Lime Island State Harbor has funding for design and construction improvements to support an improved safe boat refuge. Other projects are Onekama’s Portage Lake Navigational Channel revetment wall repair, and dredging Ontonagon Marina. In June, the Commission met in Escanaba with tours of Gladstone Marina and the municipal marina in Escanaba. Members reviewed improvements to docks and minimizing sedimentation. At this meeting, the commission approved a resolution to recommend approval of the Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan 2017-2022. The Operations Subcommittee recommended a request from St. Clair to allow commercial sailing excursions at the public marina for 2017, approval of 4 more seasonal slips in Port Austin, and up to 71 seasonal slips at Duncan L. Clinch Marina in Traverse City. A live broadcast was held during Michigan Boating Week in June on a boat from Detroit to Bay Harbor. During the week, boat demos and events were held at marinas, including Women in Boating. A survey for boaters using the reservation system was completed. Boaters listed the quality of marinas as the number one priority. Proximity to dining and shopping were also important to those who completed the survey. Early in the year, the Commission requested the DNR to research Electric Shock Drowning (ESD). Out of this endeavor came actions such as new signage posted at harbors, a brochure for

the public to learn more about electricity around boats and ESD, information posted online about ESD, training for staff, and annual inspections related specifically to marina power systems. Information was also posted online that allowed other publicly owned facilities the opportunity to purchase the signage created under this initiative. New power pedestals with low amp fault breakers were recently installed in Elk Rapids and Fayette State Harbor. The Commission met in Lexington and toured Port Sanilac Harbor and Lexington State Harbor in August and Mackinaw City in October, touring the Straits State Harbor, Mackinaw City Municipal Marina, and Mackinac Island State Harbor. A new comfort station with new showers/ restrooms is planned for Mackinac Island. Other area projects planned for improvements are Jewell Road BAS redesign/paving, Cheboygan Lock and Dam lock structure redesign, and Whitefish Point State Harbor feasibility study. The Michigan State Waterways

Commission advises the Department of Natural Resources on the development, improvement, and maintenance of state sponsored harbors and boating access sites. There are 19 State Harbors, 63 Grant-in-Aid Harbors, and over 1,300 state and Grant-in-Aid combined Boating Access Sites in Michigan that make up this state sponsorship. State facilities are administered under the DNR while Grant-in-Aid facilities are under the administration of local units of Government (City, Village, Township, or County). Waterways funds come from 1.6% of the state gasoline tax revenue, 51% of watercraft registrations, and various other revenue sources. Michigan’s streams are a young man’s dreams. In l968, the Michigan State Waterways Commission added the responsibility of public boating access sites (BAS) including opportunities to local communities for site improvements and development. Boating access sites are becoming more important because of

“Old Michigan steams like a young man’s dreams, the islands and bays are for sportsmen.” Gordon Lightfoot

the large number of trailerable boats that use the more than 11,000 inland lakes and streams. Some area BASs recently completed are Crescent Shores Road (Grand Traverse County), Sayler Park (Grand Traverse County), and Jewell Road (Cheboygan County). Other area projects slated for construction include Ironton (Charlevoix County) and Burt Lake State Park (Cheboygan County). Members of the Commission are Dennis Nichols, Chairman; Ward Walstrom, Vice-Chairman; Denny Grinold; Jim Hansen; Nicki Polan; Steve Arwood; and Mary Rising.

Meet MBIA

& learn what we do for you

BY NICKI POLAN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MICHIGAN BOATING INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATION

If you are receiving this amazing, first-class magazine it means you are lucky enough to be a lakefront property owner, work in the marine industry, connected with MBIA’s long-time member Walstrom Marine, and very likely a boater. As any one of these, you should be aware of an Association which works 24/7 to Advance, Promote, and Protect boating in Michigan. The Michigan Boating Industries Association (www.mbia.org) is a non-profit organization which has been around for nearly 60 years and is the only Association in Michigan of its kind. MBIA has a long list of legislative accomplishments which have helped boaters in this state, including the newly enacted law that requires you to pay sales tax “only on the difference” between the cost of your new boat and the value of your trade-in vessel. This was a huge win for boaters in Michigan. We also work to assure your lake is safe, your rights are not denied as it pertains to boating, and that you are not overregulated as you operate your vessel. We have been successful in securing emergency dredging funds for our industry during the low water crisis, and we fight for funding in Washington D.C. for harbor maintenance and infrastructure. These are only a few of the many issues we address on a regular basis. MBIA represents more than 350 marine businesses in Michigan. They are boat dealers, dock companies, insurance agents,

marinas, marine service companies, banks, credit unions, and more. These business members understand the strength behind a united voice and the importance of boating to our state’s economy and to their customers; and, for many, that is why they joined MBIA. Walstrom Marine has been a member for more than 35 years. Walstrom’s President Tom Ervin is on the MBIA Board. The next time you can, please thank him and the staff for being members, as they are supporting the recreational past-time that you enjoy. You should also feel satisfaction as you patronize MBIA member companies as you are supporting them as they support you. MBIA has both an educational foundation and a Michigan Clean Marina Foundation. We invite you to find out more about careers and scholarships in our industry and how you can help keep our waters and fisheries pristine. Both programs, along with others, are detailed on our industry website: www.mbia.org. Because MBIA’s members are marine businesses, we cannot offer you the opportunity to support your Association through paid membership, but we can ask that you support the MBIA by attending

our 3 boat shows: The Detroit Boat Show, February 17-25, 2018 at Cobo Center; the Novi Boat Show, March 15 – 18, 2018; and the Metro Boat Show, September 13 – 16, 2018 at Lake St. Clair Metropark. These shows fund our work. We can also invite you to stay connected with MBIA for important information on how you can stay involved in legislative activity that may impact you and your lake. Go to www.boatmichigan.org, and sign up to receive our free Boat Michigan email updates, sent 6 times per year - unless there is an urgent legislative issue related to lakes, boating, or fishing that needs immediate grass roots support – then you may receive a few more. This e-news and website will provide you with valuable information and events related to boating in Michigan. On behalf of the MBIA, I want to thank you for your support as we continue to work to advance, promote, and protect boating in Michigan and on your lake and for supporting MBIA members as they support you. We welcome your calls and emails sharing how MBIA can make your boating experience more enjoyable here in Michigan, 734.261.0123 ext. 0 or boatmichigan@mbia.org.

PORTS of CALL BY KIRSTEN BUCCIGROSSI

This year’s company calendar is full of ways for customers to get out and explore some new places by boat! We invite you to join us for any and all of our weekend cruises and are looking forward to showing you some premier Lake Michigan ports.

Leland June 9-10 FUN FACT: Leland is nicknamed Fishtown, and for good reason! With a deep-rooted history that could be a Docklines article all to itself, Leland is one of the very few remaining commercial fishing towns on the Great Lakes. MUST SEE: Whaleback Natural Area is what remains of a 10,000 year old glacial path. A 300' high dune has magnificent panoramic views. DINING: The Village Cheese Shanty! Pick out a few chunks of cheese, some loafs of their famous pretzel bread, and a bottle of wine. Bring your selections back to the boat for your very own wine tasting! BOATERS' TIPS: 1 Be cautious of shoaling around the end of the breakwall. The USCG has installed three red buoys for guidance. Stay up on the north side until you see the red buoys. The entrance is wide open, and the harbor can easily accommodate 6ft draft. 2 Bring cash. While some places do accept credit cards, many establishments in town are cash only.

48 | walstrom.com

Boyne City July 21-22

FUN FACT: May is Michigan's Morel Month, and Boyne City celebrates each year with Morel Festival. Held the weekend after Mother's Day (May 17-19 this year), the weekend is full of great food, seminars, and even a mushroom hunt! MUST SEE: The Art! From the Freshwater Art Gallery and Concert Venue to the SoBo Arts District and the Walkabout Sculpture Show, there's a lot of art and music culture packed into this little town. DINING: Stiggs Brewery is a good spot for beer, pub food, and live music. Red Mesa or Cafe SantĂŠ are recommended if you want something ethnic. Food and cocktails are on point! BOATERS' TIPS: Use Boyne City as your home base to explore all of Lake Charlevoix by boat. Cruise north to Charlevoix or head around through Ironton and down into East Jordan.

Lake Michigan Weekend Cruises Traverse City to Harbor Springs August 18-19 FUN FACT: The starting point and the destination were picked specifically because they are Walstrom territory. Our hope is to introduce some of our new Traverse City customers to our stomping grounds in Harbor Springs and to in turn introduce some of our longtime Harbor Springs customers to our new home in Traverse City. MUST SEE: Lighthouses! You'll see a handful of some of the area's most iconic lighthouses, including Old Mission Lighthouse, Grand Traverse Lighthouse, and Little Traverse Lighthouse. Charlevoix South Pier Light Station and Little Traverse Light aren't actual lighthouses, but they are some of the most well-known light stations in the area. DINING: When you get to Harbor Springs, The Pier is great waterfront dining for lunch or dinner. Gurney's make the absolute very best sandwiches; try the deli sauce (cash only). My Sister's Bake Shop is known for fresh and healthy sandwiches, soups, and salads. Don't pass up a scone or cookie to go with it. BOATERS' TIPS: If you want to sound like a local, just say Traverse and Harbor, and nix the "City" and "Springs" respectively. While it's only a short jaunt between the two, take your time! It's a scenic route, so it's worth cruising at lower speeds and navigating closer to shore to take in the view.

By Ward Walstrom, Jr. Do you know what to do if someone falls overboard? I asked myself this question while at the helm on a 41’ Sloop from Catalina Island to San Pedro off the coast of California with my son, Grant. Contrary to what I thought, Grant told me the correct man overboard (MOB) drill. Below is a MOB drill for a recreational power boat.

Whoever is at the helm must do the following calmly and quickly when someone falls overboard.

1 Yell “Man overboard” as loudly as possible. 2 Have a crew member throw a flotation device toward the person in the water- a PFD, seat cushion, life ring or anything that floats.

3 The crew member who saw the person go

overboard points continuously at the victim or the flotation device if victim is not visible.

4 Go to idle speed, turn the boat “in” toward the

victim to keep the propeller away from the person in the water, and turn around into your same wake.

5 Hit the MOB button on your GPS so that you can track the victim in the water.

6 Put out a Mayday or Pan-Pan on VHF

CH 16. Tell Man Overboard, give the Lat Lon from the MOB coordinates on your GPS, and give your general location.

7 Once you have located victim, approach upwind,

throw a life ring with a line attached and bring victim to the boat rather than the boat to the victim.

8 Stop vessel well clear of victim and take boat out of gear.

9 Pull victim out on swim platform or use an emergency ladder if available.

Pioneering an

ENVIRONMENTALLY COMPATIBLE CONTROL for Zebra and Quagga Mussels

BY MATT CLAUCHERTY, MONITORING AND RESEARCH COORDINATOR, TIP OF THE MITT WATERSHED COUNCIL

F

or decades, water lovers of all types have watched powerlessly as invasive zebra and quagga mussels have taken over aquatic ecosystems across the Great Lakes Basin. Anglers bemoan violent fluctuations in

54 | walstrom.com

fish populations spurred by food chain shifts linked to the mussel’s filter feeding. Beachgoers suffer foot injuries as shells wash ashore and foul beaches. Birders witness increased fall die-offs of waterfowl from avian botulism, a paralytic condition thought to originate in nutrient-enriched benthic environments driven by the mussels. Shoreline infrastructure, whether it be metal sheet pilings, water intake pipes, or other equipment, is often encrusted with zebra

mussels, creating a maintenance nightmare for shoreline industry. One lesser known effect of the proliferation of zebra and quagga mussels is the near-elimination of native mussels (many know them simply as “clams”) from the region’s inland lakes. Zebra and quagga mussels compete with native mussels for the same food source: phytoplankton suspended in the water column. In lakes where zebra and quagga mussels have taken

hold, monitoring efforts have documented plummeting phytoplankton concentrations. Indeed, our waters have become clearer, but not in a healthy way. Think of the increased clarity as sterility; there isn’t much life left. To add insult to injury, zebra mussels often encrust native mussels, taking root by the dozens upon a single native mussel shell, thus inhibiting essential movement and life functions. These two factors, in combination with habitat loss, have resulted in a vast reduction in native mussels across the Great Lakes Region. Among the economic and ecologic turmoil of a large-scale infestation, a glimmer of hope lies in a clever solution: a bio-based control measure that selectively eliminates zebra and quagga mussels from the lake environment. In the 1990s, researchers from the New York State Museum tested over 500 strains of bacteria for action against zebra and quagga mussels. One strain of Pseudomonas flourescens, a common soil bacterium often found living in symbiosis with plant roots, fit the bill. Marrone Bio Innovations (a California-based organic pesticide company) purchased the technology and patented it under the trade name Zequanox. After much preliminary testing, Zequanox was approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2012 for use in infrastructure such as water intake pipes or cooling systems. In 2014, an environmental restoration label was approved, allowing Zequanox to be used in the natural environment. The Zequanox product is an off-white powder that consists of dehydrated P. flourescens bacteria. Since the bacteria are dead (for nothing lives without water), there is no concern of growth of introduced bacteria within a lake. The powder is mixed with lake water and injected above the lake's bottom, where zebra and quagga mussels filter feed on the material just as they would their natural food source. Within 7-20 days, Zequanox causes the digestive system of the mussels to fail, and the mussels die. A large body of past laboratory work confirms that other aquatic organisms such as native mussels, invertebrates, fish, birds, mammals, and plants are unlikely to be harmed by Zequanox. Furthermore, Zequanox is biodegradable and quickly dissipates within the aquatic environment. In a recent research project, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Zequanox

was used to treat three acres of open-water lake bottom in Round Lake, near Petoskey in Emmet County. The Lake has a dwindling population of native mussels, many of which are encrusted with a heavy load of zebra mussels. The study, as the first large-scale open water use of Zequanox, will evaluate its effectiveness at rehabilitating threatened native mussel populations. In addition to native mussels, a wide range of other environmental parameters will be evaluated. Algal species, insects, and water quality measurements such as dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentrations were measured before and after Zequanox treatments to identify any non-target impacts or water quality degradation brought about by Zequanox use. The level of detail and wide breadth of work required participation from experts across many fields of aquatic study. Researchers from the University of Michigan Biological Station, Michigan Natural Features Inventory, and United States Geologic Survey partnered with Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council to carry out the study. While the study is still underway, some preliminary conclusions can be drawn. No immediate water quality degradation occurred, with dissolved oxygen levels remaining high throughout treatment areas. Close observation from multiple teams of researchers confirmed that no aquatic life was injured during or immediately after treatments. Ongoing lab work will evaluate every family of insect, species of algae, and type of zooplankton for possible vulnerability to Zequanox. Applying Zequanox to open water has presented its own challenges, with mixing of lake water diminishing treatment concentrations, which could lead to reduced effectiveness.

The current research efforts aim to bring Zequanox to the forefront of invasive species control, putting another tool in the toolkit of lake managers. While complete elimination of zebra and quagga mussels may not be a realistic goal, many other management activities are possible. Zequanox could be used as a rapid response measure for new infestations, or as a safety net around boat launches of uninfested lakes. Zequanox may be used in the future to help restore native mussel populations that would otherwise succumb to competition from zebra and quagga mussels. These visions and more depend upon the proven safety of this promising new treatment technology. Full study results, as well as videos and webinars, will be available at www.watershedcouncil.org in early 2019.

BY TAYLOR HUNTMAN

December 1st through 3rd was a weekend to go down in Walstrom Marine history... it was our first attendance at the Sea Ray Yacht Expo. Three days and two nights filled with boating, memories, and learning. Don’t blink! At Sea Ray Yacht Expo, the weekend could fly right past you! Hosted at the South Seas Plantation Resort in Captiva Island, Florida, the 2017 Sea Ray Yacht Expo was an event like no other! As the new Sea Ray dealer for Northern Michigan, we at Walstrom Marine

were equally proud and grateful to have the opportunity to share this weekend with a select group of customers and their dedicated Yacht Sales representatives. By glancing around the crowd, the many smiles of all those in attendance required little explanation as to just why this event can boast the ultimate customer-focused experience. With the ability to climb on boats from each of Sea Ray's product lines, Sport Boats, Sport Cruisers, Sport Yachts, and the L-Series, customers were able to have a once in a lifetime, hands-on experience that simply cannot be replicated. On the first of three days, customers are invited to join Sea Ray representatives for a welcome reception near the docks where each slip was filled with the latest and greatest that Sea Ray has to offer. That evening, customers fell asleep in anticipation of what the next day held... a day filled with a countless amount of cruises in boats of their choice! While boating at the first of December seems like a foreign concept to our customers, Sea Ray crew and

captains made the day seem like they had hand crafted the perfectly blue sky and warm sunshine themselves. Not only did customers get to spend their day on the water, but representatives from partners like Mercury, Raymarine, SeaKeeper, and CAT Engines were there to teach customers all about the new technology that is a part of their lives on the water. As the sun sank and we began to

Rounding

THE HORN BY WARD WALSTROM

The thought of rounding the horn brings shivers up any sailor’s spine. Cape Horn is at the southern end of Tierra del Fuego and marks the strait between South America and Antarctica, a necessary point to round for circumnavigating the world. Magellan was one of the first to experience the treacherous waters where the Pacific Ocean meets the Atlantic. Ships are tossed and smashed by frequent storms created by this extreme point of land.

Lake Michigan has a cousin to Cape Horn. It’s Waugoshance. Here, the lake, 900 feet at its deepest, builds for 300 miles from the south to squeeze through a narrow shallow passage at Grey’s Reef. Waugoshance is the long narrow point extending east to west in the northwest corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula and part of Wilderness State Park. Most pleasure craft opt to pass through the deeper shipping lane around Grey’s Reef Light after careful study of the chart. But local boaters know a few miles are saved by going around the Old Light (Waugoshance). My dad and I have never touched bottom in all our years going around it. Waugonshance Light was built in 1851, roughly 19 miles west of the Straits of Mackinaw. It was abandoned in l912 and replaced by White Shoal Light, one of the most expensive lighthouses built on the

Great Lakes to mark the shipping lane along with Grey’s Reef Light. Waugoshance Light was used for naval gunnery practice in World War II. The keeper of the Waugoshance Light during the 1800’s, John Herman, was known for his practical jokes and drinking. One night he locked his assistant in the lantern room. The lantern room is covered by a strange-looking birdcage. When the assistant finally found his way out, Herman was not to be found. Some believe he fell into the water. Now known as the Abandoned Light on the chart, Waugoshance has a ghostlike appearance after losing its steel outer casing in the mid-eighties exposing its concrete exterior shell. Its “bird cage” lantern house top is another unique feature and gives it a haunting look. It tells all who round it that this is not for the faint of heart. Approximately 20 ships sunk near Waugoshance between 1860 and 1890. Another 15 wrecks occurred between Cross Village and Skillagalee during that time. November is the most vicious month of them all. Gale force winds can blow up to 50 knots. One-third of all wrecks in this area, Beaver Island, and Little Traverse Bay occurred in November. Even on a summer day, the average seas are 3’. I would invite any Floridian who claims Lake Michigan is a pond to make this passage when it’s rough. I can recall my own white-knuckle rides around the horn. There are times I turn back at Seven Mile Point knowing what the seas will be like if I continue on. It’s my point of no return. The 50 mile stretch from Little Traverse Bay to Mackinaw is the only remaining shoreline that has no harbor of refuge every 30 miles, a long-time goal of the Michigan Waterways Commission. When Cross Village was chosen by the DNR for possible construction of a harbor of refuge, the nesting area of the Piping Plover, an endangered bird, was discovered. After a battle between DEQ, DNR and local environmental groups, the harbor has been left to the birds and all but forgotten. In the meantime, seafarers will keep a close eye on the weather and batten down the hatches before they attempt to round the horn.

CROSSING THE BAR BY ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.
