Essential Items Every Boater Should Have On Board

Adding Your Marina to Your Policy: Why It Matters

From the Wheelhouse

The 2024 boating season has already come to an end. How fortunate we are to have spent another summer under the Michigan sun. This summer felt different than the last few. There was a noticeable shift away from the COVID frenzy that sparked unprecedented growth in the boating industry. This summer, I was able to fully appreciate how much our operation has expanded in the past few years.

When I first started writing this annual piece for Docklines, we had two locations in Northern Michigan. Since 2020, we have added four new locations, doubled our boat lines, and more than tripled our team. Optimization of the customer experience at each of our locations, which are now spread throughout the state, has been our main focus during this expansion.

One of the things that is ingrained in the Walstrom culture is continuous improvement, with the end goal being an elevated customer experience. We do this by continually training our team on the latest products and technology and recruiting the best candidates in the market. In the past two years, we have had the good fortune of acquiring two highly successful marine businesses – Algonac Harbour Club and Grand Bay Marine. The highly-skilled team members from these businesses have made immediate, notable contributions to our success. We have also learned more useful methods for serving our customers and our team, and we have adopted many of their best practices.

I have often been asked “Why do you want to grow?” As we grow, it presents many opportunities for the improvement of our customers’ boating experience. It also allows us to provide products and services to our customers that they otherwise would not have access to. In addition, growth enables us to provide security and career advancement opportunities to our team. As someone once said, “You are either green and growing or ripe and

rotting.” It is our intention to remain green for a long time!

In my messages over the years, I have often acknowledged our team. They are what makes Walstrom Marine unique in the marine industry. I marvel at their talent and dedication. As our company continues to grow, I have assured the team of my commitment to continue to make every decision with their best interests at heart.

With that said, I would like to take a moment to recognize and express my gratitude to the following team members who have celebrated significant Walstrom Marine service milestones in 2024:

Heather Lake | 25 years

Wayne Peterson | 34 years

Steve Murchie | 35 years

Stan Carter | 35 years

To all our team members who are out there every day serving our customers: thank you. I would also like to extend a special thank you to each and every one of our customers. We value you and feel privileged to serve you. We are committed to elevating the boating experience, for you, our most valued asset.

See you on the lake!

STAN CARTER 35 years

EmployeeCORNER 2024 MILESTONE Anniversaries

In 1989, Stan received a call from a technician at Walstrom Marine during his lunch break. Known for his experience in automotive painting and finish work, he was asked if he’d be interested in a new opportunity. Stan spent the rest of his lunch break considering the career change, then got in his car and drove to Walstrom Marine 20 minutes later. The rest, as they say, is history.

For 35 years, Stan has embodied the passion and dedication that define Walstrom Marine. “I love what I do,” he says, attributing his long tenure to a deep pride in his work and a genuine enjoyment of teaching others the craft. A Ferris State graduate in Auto Body, Stan initially pursued welding after his service in the Army. But it wasn’t until he joined Walstrom that his career truly aligned with his creative passions.

“I’ve always been an artist,” he shares. Outside of work, Stan enjoys drawing and painting, skills that have seamlessly translated into his career, allowing him to channel his creativity and keen eye for

detail into every project. Over the years, his experience has grown into confidence, leaving behind a legacy of outstanding, highquality work.

Early in his career, Ward Walstrom asked Stan what his long-term career goals were. Stan replied, “I want people to leave other marinas and come to Walstrom Marine asking for me by name to work on their boats.” And he’s succeeded. Many customers seek out Stan specifically for finish work, drawn by his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.

When asked what he thinks he’ll be remembered for, Stan laughs and says, “Probably for being grumpy.” Beneath the humor, however, lies a deep sense of dedication. “I’ve always shown up early, stayed late, and seen things through, no matter the challenge.” He also credits the leaders he’s worked with, including Dave Cope, service manager in Cheboygan, who shares Stan’s dedication and, as Stan notes with a smile, his grumpiness.

Stan has witnessed significant growth

and change at Walstrom Marine over the years. Despite the expansion, he hopes the company will continue to uphold the quality and professionalism that have been central to his 35-year career.

Stan's legacy is one of dedication, craftsmanship, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Walstrom Marine is honored to celebrate this milestone and grateful for his immense contributions.

STEVE MURCHIE 35 years

For 35 years, Steve Murchie, known to many as “Murch,” has been a pillar of dedication, hard work, and humor at Walstrom Marine. Dressed in his signature look—sporting Walstrom gear and a nod to a sports team, today a University of Michigan visor—Steve sat down to reflect on his journey with the company.

Steve’s story at Walstrom Marine began in 1989, when he was hired as a temporary yard crew employee. Originally, he was only supposed to work until July 4th of that year. But recognizing his potential, the service manager at the time offered him a full-time position (that may be mostly Steve’s opinion). Steve started out working in the yard, where the team of just 1520 employees stayed busy year-round, much like they do now, handling tasks like buffing, waxing, and painting boats. Back then, the three storage buildings at Hoyt were mostly unheated, and the company stored around 150 boats in total – all with one travel lift.

A significant shift came with the development of Bay Harbor. This led to the construction of heated storage buildings and expanded Walstrom’s customer base,

which had previously been centered around Harbor Point and Wequetonsing. Steve recalls watching barges load cement from his house before Bay Harbor transformed the area into a thriving marina. The influx of new customers and tourists changed the course of business for Walstrom Marine.

Over the years, Steve not only grew professionally but also handled raising his three children largely on his own. Balancing the demands of fatherhood, a full-time job, and the need for personal time was tough, but Steve always found security in his steady paycheck from Walstrom. What truly made a difference, though, was the sense of family within the company. “Everyone took care of each other,” Steve says. He hopes that future generations of employees recognize this same value: if you put in your time and effort, the rewards will come—not just in money or vacation time (although, as Steve quips, those are nice), but in the form of a supportive company that has your back.

After 35 years of service, Steve has earned a bit of flexibility in his schedule. He’s one of the lucky few who gets to travel between Walstrom’s various locations, meeting employees and sharing his wisdom. In fact, he knows more employees than anyone—except perhaps HR.

Margaret Groenevelt, a 19-year Walstrom veteran, had this to say about Steve:

“At that time I was hired on, I was one of the few women on the team, but Steve treated me just like everyone else—no different, no special treatment. He kept me busy and taught me the value of staying productive. To this day, I carry that lesson with me, always finding something that needs doing. Steve is the hardest-working person I know, and Walstrom is incredibly fortunate to have him.”

Outside of work, Steve stays just as active. He enjoys hunting with his wife Kasey, camping throughout the state, and cheering for the Packers, Lions, and Tigers (oh my!). He’s also a proud grandpa to his granddaughter, Layla.

Steve Murchie: Dedicated. Dependable. Funny.

Thank you, Steve, for 35 years of making Walstrom Marine a better place. We are all grateful for your contributions and look forward to the years ahead.

HEATHER LAKE 25 years

Heather Lake’s first day on the job at Walstrom Marine was also her son’s first day of kindergarten. As she celebrated her 25th anniversary with the company and her son’s 30th birthday, her grandson started school this fall.

“It makes me wonder where the time went…”

Hired as a service writer in the Cheboygan location in 1999, Heather went on to wear many different hats in the office. She learned how to manage storage, write work orders, order and receive parts, manage inventory - the list goes on and on.

“It was very different back then. The technicians punched in on paper timecards… we sat down with a calculator and the paper timecards and calculated the hours on a job for billing. We had one computer back then, but it wasn’t even plugged in.”

In October of 1999, she was sent to Florida for training on DockMaster, the new marina management software at the time, and finally had a reason to plug in the computer.

A far cry from the amount of technology we are using in our marina operations today, Heather has a unique perspective on how much the industry has changed and grown. But the one thing that has remained: her passion for people and her job.

Heather’s manager, Dave Cope, service manager of Cheboygan, sums it up nicely: “Heather’s genuine nature is outstanding. Her love and devotion to her family carries over to the workplace and her strong work ethic. She has seen a lot of change in the past 25 years- from paper copies to the digital world we live in today at Walstrom Marine- and she has remained a beacon of positivity.”

Thank you, Heather, for 25 years of dedication, positivity, and service at Walstrom Marine. We are proud to work alongside you.

INVESTING in Our People How Walstrom Marine Fuels Growth Through Training

In today’s rapidly evolving marine industry, where the technology on a boat varies significantly between models and even year to year, Walstrom Marine recognizes that our greatest asset is our employees. Investing in them isn’t just a perk—it’s a strategic initiative that drives growth, enhances resources, and gives us a competitive edge.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING AND TRAINING

Training plans are critical for equipping our employees with the latest skills and knowledge. Whether it’s mastering new technologies, improving communication and teamwork, or developing leadership capabilities, continuous learning enables our team to perform efficiently and effectively.

At Walstrom Marine, we've committed to leadership development by enrolling six employees in leadership training. We want our leaders to create a workplace that stands above the rest—one that values team engagement, fosters personal relationships, and motivates everyone.

As Anthony Christie, Harbormaster at Algonac Harbour Club, shared:

“The leadership training focused on emotional and situational awareness— understanding the differences in personality

traits and how certain personalities react in various situations. Having access to this type of training at Walstrom is a huge benefit and something that can be used at work, home, or with our customers!”

Dave Cope, service manager in Cheboygan, also reflected on his leadership training:

“I appreciate the investment that Walstrom has made in me. The training has increased my awareness of how my actions impact others. It has also allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Walstrom Marine and I are constantly pursuing excellence.”

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE: THE BACKBONE OF CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

Marine technicians play a crucial role in the maintenance and repair of our customers' boats. Proper training ensures they have the skills and knowledge needed to identify and address potential issues before they escalate. Our customers have limited time to enjoy their boats, and our marine technicians make that time possible. Between fall 2023 and spring 2024, Walstrom Marine sent over 20 marine technicians off-site to complete hands-on

training across multiple states, including Florida, Virginia, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan. Throughout their time at Walstrom, these technicians have access to vendor websites and continuous online training to ensure they're always up to date.

SEVERAL OF OUR TECHNICIANS HAVE REACHED IMPRESSIVE MILESTONES

Brian Lentell, lead marine technician in Cheboygan, has been with Walstrom for seven years and holds Yamaha Master Certification and Seakeeper Master Certification.

Reflecting on his training, Brian shared:

“I’ve been working on boats for over 25 years. The most common question I get asked is, ‘How hard is this job?’ My response is always the same—with experience and the right training, nothing is hard; some things just take more time.”

Scott Stephen, marine technician in Traverse City, has been with us for 21 years and is Volvo Gas and Diesel Certified.

Ian English, also a marine technician in Traverse City, has been with us for 10 years and is Volvo Gas and Diesel Certified.

Brian Johnson, lead marine technician in Harbor Springs, highlighted the importance of ongoing training:

“In the marine industry, the need for continued training never stops. Walstrom Marine understands this! The investment Walstrom makes in its employees ensures we stay up to date with the latest in sales and service knowledge. Boat manufacturers are constantly upgrading to the latest technology, and it takes continuous training to stay ahead.”

EXPANDING TRAINING ACROSS DEPARTMENTS

Our commitment to employee development extends beyond marine technicians. Employees from our parts department and gel/fiberglass teams are also expanding their skills. For the first time, we held an internal gel/fiberglass training at our Harbor Springs location, which included employees from all locations—seven in total. Andrew Slater, a gel/fiberglass technician at our Harbor Springs location for over six years, led the training. He shared his

perspective:

“Boat finishing evolves daily and requires constant learning. The training I’ve attended while at Walstrom allows me to stay current with the latest products, trends, and standards. It also sparks a passion to share this knowledge with future technicians. The flow of information—from technical courses to me, and from me to potential technicians—is crucial to pushing our team and the next generation to the forefront of yacht cosmetics.”

INTERNAL COLLABORATION AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Our commitment to training goes beyond technical skills. We recently launched internal warranty training to ensure that employees handling warranty claims have a clear understanding of each boat manufacturer’s process. This has fostered continued collaboration among team members, ensuring that we have the tools necessary to provide top-tier service and warranty repairs for our customers.

Our service advisors, who interact most frequently with customers, have also undergone multiple training sessions. Perhaps even more important than the training itself is the relationship building that happens alongside it. Strong professional relationships are the backbone of a supportive and efficient work environment.

We continuously ask each other, “How can we best support one another and, most importantly, our customers?” By learning from our co-workers, we refine techniques and develop skills critical to providing exceptional customer service.

LOOKING FORWARD: DELIVERY CAPTAIN TRAINING

As we look to the future, we plan to implement Delivery Captain training to establish a level of service that surpasses our competitors. Our goal is to ensure that customers feel comfortable and confident operating their boats from day one.

FOSTERING A CULTURE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

By offering tailored, engaging, and costeffective learning experiences, Walstrom Marine fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Employees benefit from enhanced skills, greater engagement, and opportunities for career advancement. This commitment to internal training is a winwin for both Walstrom and our employees, driving success and growth for everyone involved.

At Walstrom Marine, we will continue building a culture of continuous learning and strong relationships with both our employees and our customers.

INAVIGATING CHANGE

Grand Bay Marine Transitions to

n August 2024, Grand Bay Marine officially transitioned to the Walstrom Marine brand, marking a significant milestone for both the company and its customers. This merger unites Grand Bay Marine’s strong reputation and personalized service with Walstrom Marine’s 78 years of industry-leading customer support and extensive resources. For customers, this means an unparalleled boating experience as the two brands come together to enhance and elevate the level of service and expertise available under one trusted name.

For employees, this transition represents an exciting opportunity for growth and development. Jessica Karr, HR & payroll manager, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “With an acquisition, employees can benefit from better training programs, improved benefits, opening new opportunities for growth and resources. I have witnessed our Traverse City team gain relationships with each other, problem-solve together, support and encourage. This creates a sense of strength as we continue to drive the company forward.” The merger not only enhances resources for employees but also fosters an environment where teamwork can thrive.

This sense of collaboration has been key as long-standing Grand Bay Marine employees embrace their new roles within the Walstrom Marine family. Dan MacArthur, parts manager, reflected on the challenges

and triumphs of the transition, saying, “Transitioning from a small privately owned business to a large group of stores was a challenge…The support I have received from [Matt Tarsney], as well as the rest of the parts departments in the Walstrom group, has made me feel confident and secure while implementing wide-sweeping changes within our location.” Dan’s experience underscores the importance of shared knowledge and resources that come with being part of a larger organization, which has alleviated pressure and fostered a sense of community among employees.

Now that we’re united as one company, we’re focused on enhancing the customer experience at every touchpoint. One component of this effort was the launch of a new website in fall of 2024. Designed to bring together the best of both brands, the site offers a streamlined and user-friendly experience, making it easier than ever for customers to browse inventory, learn about our team and services, explore informative blog content, and stay up to date on events. These improvements reflect Walstrom Marine’s commitment to evolving with our customers’ needs and enhancing every aspect of their boating journey.

“This new website reflects our dedication to creating an exceptional experience for our customers,” said Carie Birkmeier, Marketing Director. “It’s not just a digital tool—it’s a

foundation for how we connect, share knowledge, and support the boating lifestyle. With every step we take, we aim to make things easy on our customers and raise the bar for service and innovation.”

The transition has also introduced enhanced operational efficiencies that benefit customers. With streamlined processes and improved communication channels, Walstrom Marine is poised to offer a more cohesive experience across all locations. This integration means that customers can expect not only a premium selection of boats and services but also the kind of personalized support that has always been a hallmark of both brands.

Looking ahead, the merger is set to pave the way for exciting developments in the future. Plans are already in motion to unite both Traverse City locations under one roof, creating an even more efficient and customer-focused operation. This consolidation is not just about operational efficiency; it’s about creating a more elevated experience for customers, ensuring they receive the highest level of service possible.

With big developments set for 2025, the next chapter for Walstrom Marine promises exciting opportunities for Michigan’s boating community. As both employees and customers embark on this journey together, the commitment to excellence remains unwavering, setting the stage for a thriving future on the water.

A LEGACY OF

Giving Back

TRAVERSE CITY

At Walstrom Marine, we recognize that our role extends beyond providing exceptional service in the boating industry; it also involves making a difference in our community. Our employees actively engage in various initiatives that support local organizations and enhance the lives of those around us. This article highlights some of the impactful ways our team is contributing to the community, showcasing our commitment to service and the spirit of collaboration that drives us to give back.

Father Fred HighlightWalstrom Marine Employees Support Local Food Pantry

Walstrom Marine employees recently made a significant impact in the community by volunteering at Tom’s Food Stores in Traverse City. Their mission was to collect donations for the Father Fred Foundation’s food pantry, which plays a crucial role in providing free services to those in need.

The Father Fred Foundation is a locally founded, locally funded organization that focuses on serving individuals and families across five counties. With a commitment to dignity and respect, the Foundation offers essential services such as food, clothing, and financial aid free of charge. They operate an onsite pantry and several outreach programs to support those who cannot visit in person.

During the volunteer event, Walstrom Marine’s team dedicated their time and energy to assisting with the donation drive. They worked diligently to gather

non-perishable food items and financial contributions from customers, all aimed at supporting the Father Fred Foundation’s mission of helping those in crisis.

Walstrom Marine is proud to stand alongside the Father Fred Foundation in this vital effort and is committed to participating in more community-focused initiatives in the future. Through these efforts, we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us, reinforcing our dedication to community support and engagement.

Walstrom Marine’s Ongoing Support of the Gladhander Fundraiser

For years, Grand Bay Marine has been a cherished supporter of the Gladhander Fundraiser, a premier event benefiting the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools. This elegant black-tie gala, open to the public, not only brings the community together but also raises vital funds for local education. Continuing the legacy of Grand Bay Marine, Walstrom Marine has pledged to uphold its support of the Gladhander Fundraiser. This commitment ensures that the event maintains its impact and that the schools continue to benefit from the generosity of the maritime community.

Our involvement has long been a highlight of the Gladhander event, contributing generously through a silent auction featuring a luxurious tritoon boat and an exclusive cruise package on Grand Traverse Bay, complete with a chef’s prepared dinner at the Boat House on Old Mission. These donations have played a crucial role in raising over $610,935

annually, directly supporting students and teachers in the Grand Traverse area.

Walstrom Marine’s dedication to the Gladhander Fundraiser underscores the importance of community involvement and support. By preserving the tradition of contributing to this key event, Walstrom Marine helps secure the future of local education and reaffirms its role as a vital community partner. As we honor their ongoing contributions, we celebrate the spirit of collaboration that strengthens our

community and ensures that the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools continue to thrive.

ALGONAC HARBOUR

Algonac Harbour Club

Hosts Boats 4 Vets

Algonac Harbour Club is the new home for Boats4Vets, a heartwarming initiative dedicated to giving back to our veterans through the joy of boating. This vibrant program, which first launched on Lake St. Clair in 2009, has grown into a cherished tradition, now with three chapters across Southeast Michigan.

Boats4Vets is more than just a boating experience; it's a heartfelt way to honor and appreciate those who have served. Each event begins with a warm welcome at the VFW, where veterans and volunteers gather for coffee and donuts. The day then unfolds with a relaxing boat cruise on Lake St. Clair, offering a chance for veterans to enjoy the serene beauty of the waters while connecting with fellow enthusiasts and supporters.

This collaboration highlights the power of community and the impact of simple gestures in showing appreciation for our veterans. As Algonac Harbour Club opens its doors to this remarkable program, it reinforces the importance of supporting those who have given so much for our country. Through initiatives like Boats4Vets, we celebrate our veterans and strengthen the bonds within our community, proving that acts of kindness and gratitude can make a significant difference.

HARBOR SPRINGS

Harbor Springs hosts Little Traverse Bay Humane Society

On August 15, 2024, the Walstrom Marine Boat Warehouse in Harbor Springs was transformed into a dazzling venue for a heartwarming and impactful celebration— the 25th anniversary of Little Traverse Bay Humane Society’s Howl at the Moon. At this annual event, known for its blend of fun and excitement, attendees were treated to a spectacular evening, beginning with an array of fabulous food from the Crow’s Nest Restaurant & Catering. The culinary delights were complemented by delectable desserts from Small Batch, ensuring that every palate was catered to. An open bar added to the festivities, creating a lively atmosphere where supporters could mingle and celebrate the cause.

The event was more than just a night of indulgence and enjoyment; it was a testament to the generosity and commitment of the community. With a mix of silent and live auctions, raffles, and a variety of engaging activities, the evening was filled with enthusiasm and anticipation. The highlight of the night was the record-breaking amount of over $500,000 raised, thanks to the incredible support from sponsors, donors, local businesses and dedicated volunteers.

Since 1951, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society has been serving pets and the people that love them. In 2023 alone, over

850 animals were cared for by LTBHS. This year’s Howl at the Moon was a celebration of their stories and the collective efforts that made their care possible. The funds raised during this milestone event this year will go directly to providing animals in need with the essential resources: healthy food, warm beds, medical care, and the love and attention they deserve until they find their forever homes.

Little Traverse Bay Humane Society’s mission remains steadfast—to sustainably and respectfully serve pets and the people who love them with compassionate, comprehensive, and exemplary care. The overwhelming support from the community at this year’s Howl at the Moon is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together.

As we look forward to another year of serving animals in need, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this event a success. To learn more about Little Traverse Bay Humane Society or to make a donation, visit ltbhs.com.

BAY HARBOR

Bay Harbor hosts Petoskey Yacht Club

On a beautiful evening in Bay Harbor, Walstrom Marine opened its doors to host a lively social event for the Petoskey Yacht Club. The "Happy [2] Hours" event brought together members of the club for an evening of camaraderie, music, and fun.

Attendees enjoyed a live acoustic

performance by the local favorite, Two Track Mind, whose music set the perfect tone for the evening. The venue was filled with cheerful conversations, laughter, and a warm sense of community as members mingled and shared stories of their summer adventures on the water.

The event was well attended, with a great turnout of yacht club members who took advantage of the opportunity to connect with fellow boating enthusiasts. The spacious and inviting atmosphere at Walstrom Marine provided the perfect backdrop for the event, allowing guests to relax and enjoy the evening.

The success of the Petoskey Yacht Club social gathering is a testament to the strong partnership between the Petoskey Yacht Club and Walstrom Marine, both of which share a passion for fostering a vibrant boating community. Overall, it was an evening filled with good music, great company, and lasting memories—truly a "boatload of fun" for all who attended.

At Walstrom Marine, we believe that giving back and making a positive impact on the community is essential. We wholeheartedly support our employees in their efforts to volunteer and engage with local initiatives. Women in Boating: A Recap of Our Traverse City, Bay Harbor, and Harbor Springs Events

Walstrom Marine recently hosted a series of "Women in Boating" events aimed at empowering women with the skills and confidence to navigate the water. These events, held in Traverse City, Bay Harbor, and Harbor Springs, were a resounding success, bringing together women from the community and within our own company.

The first event in Traverse City at CenterPointe Marina offered participants the opportunity to learn boating basics under the guidance of Tom Ervin, president of Walstrom Marine. The combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practice on the water ensured that attendees left

feeling confident and capable. The beautiful setting of Traverse City added to the day’s enjoyment, making it a perfect start to our series.

The following weekend, we hosted an event at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club, where participants once again benefited from Tom Ervin’s extensive experience in the marine industry. The focus was on mastering docking and maneuvering, with participants gaining valuable practical experience in these essential skills. The stunning views at Bay Harbor provided an inspiring backdrop for a day of learning and connection.

In addition to our public events, we also organized a special Women in Boating session exclusively for Walstrom Marine employees in Harbor Springs. This event allowed our team members to gain the same skills and confidence we aim to provide our customers, fostering a deeper connection to the boating lifestyle we promote. It was a fantastic opportunity for our employees to bond, learn, and take to the water with newfound confidence.

Across all three locations, the Women in Boating events were about more than just learning; they were about building a supportive community of women who share a passion for boating.

We’re proud of the success of these events and look forward to continuing to support and inspire women, both within our community and our company, as they embark on their boating journeys.

BOATS that BUILT US

Harbor

I remember as a kid sitting on the end of our dock on Dickenson Island, watching the cigarette boats and yachts go by with my brothers and trying to guess the brand of each passing boat. I spent every summer growing up on the Saint Clair Flats, hunting, fishing, and exploring every bit of Lake Saint Clair we could pack into a summer.

I have spent the majority of my life on a boat in one way or another. From duck hunting in a 12-foot aluminum boat and day boating in our Boston Whaler 180 Dauntless to serving aboard an amphibious assault ship (the Bataan LHD 5) and cruising Lake Saint Clair on our Dynamic Marine with a 502 big block, boating has been a constant in my life. My very first job was here at Algonac Harbour Club at the fuel docks. Boating got into my blood at a very young age, and I was adamant that my children experience it too.

My earliest memories are of my dad picking up my brothers and me after work, jamming to Stevie Wonder on the way to Johnny Legas for a quick bite to eat before filling the cooler with ice, jumping on the boat, and heading to the cabin for a weekend of bonfires, tubing, snorkeling at the drop-off at the end of our dock to find long-lost treasures, and playing the greatest game ever created, “kick the can.”

When my dad first bought our cabin, he told my brothers and me about an old, abandoned cabin and a plane wreck from the 1950s somewhere on the island. We spent so many summers exploring every inch of that island to find them. To this day, when I pass by the island on the boat, a part of me still eyes the shoreline to see if we might have missed something.

I have told my wife ever since we met that this place is magic and always calls me back. No matter where I’ve gone or what I’ve done in life, this place has always drawn me home. Once this boating culture gets inside you, it becomes a part of you forever. It’s a magic I’ve been fortunate enough to appreciate my whole life, and now I get to watch my boys have those same experiences. My oldest son started his first job this summer here at Algonac Harbour Club, and it’s crazy how many memories it brought back for me. Here’s hoping he and his brothers will find that old, abandoned cabin and plane wreck sometime next summer!

A reflection of the boats and experiences that made our staff passionate members of the boating community.

Boat & Yacht Sales, Bay Harbor

Ever since I was born, I have always been a boater. Growing up on Gull Lake near Kalamazoo, Michigan, I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time on and around boats. My fondest memories with my friends and family involve boats; my first job was working for a marina, and the first vehicle I was ever licensed to drive was a boat. Throughout the years, my boating experiences have contributed to the person I am today.

Many of my early boating memories took place aboard my family’s 1992 Ski Nautique. This Ski Nautique was the first boat I learned how to drive and really kickstarted my love for boating. After many hours of driving boats alongside my parents, I obtained my boater’s safety certificate at the age of 12, and we acquired a 1999 Boston Whaler 13 GLS that we found on Craigslist. Boy, was I excited! For the first time, I was behind the wheel of a boat on my own. I spent the following years logging

countless hours driving around Gull Lake, going to friends’ houses, and enjoying summertime to its fullest potential. I can’t imagine a better way to grow up!

As time went on and wake surfing became all the rage, it was time to upgrade the Ski Nautique to a boat that we could wake surf behind—at least, I thought so. I spent countless hours researching boats and doing my best to convince my mom and dad it was time for an upgrade. After months of hard selling, we went to the Grand Rapids Boat Show, where we found a replacement

for the Ski Nautique. The replacement was a 2009 MasterCraft X-14V, which became my pride and joy. I spent hours cleaning, waxing, and making sure that if it was time to go for a boat ride, we were ready to go! It was behind this boat that I learned to wakeboard and wake surf. After some time had passed, I gained my parents’ trust to begin taking the MasterCraft out on the water alone with my friends. What a time! After logging hundreds of hours on the X-14V, we upgraded boats once again, this time to a 2015 MasterCraft X-10. Looking back upon all the boats that have shaped me, the X-10 was my favorite. My family acquired this boat when I was a sophomore in high school, and I spent as much time as I could on it. I met many of my lifelong friends on this boat, created countless great memories, and even took my wife out on one of our first dates aboard the X-10.

I am truly grateful for the memories and experiences boating has given me throughout my life. My time spent on the water culminated in the perfect career working in sales for Walstrom Marine. Every day is an opportunity to assist customers in finding a boat they’ll remember for a lifetime.

KYLE OLESON

Memories of boating with my family are as clear and vivid as any from childhood. Our weekends were punctuated by a carefully synchronized ritual of preparation before hitting the water, with each family member playing a role in what felt like an intricate dance. The day would always start with my dad setting the mood. He would pull out a well-worn green album with a pink flamingo on the cover from his record collection—none other than yacht-rock inventor Christopher Cross. As “Ride Like the Wind” and “Sailing” filled the house, the excitement for the day ahead would build. Everyone knew their role. My mom was responsible for packing the cooler, and she never disappointed. Pickled bologna and her homemade spinach dip were staples of our boating days, and to this day, those tastes immediately bring back memories of being on the water. After the cooler was packed, she’d move on to the “Bean Bag,” an oversized L.L. Bean canvas beach bag reserved solely for vacations or boating. That bag seemed to fit everything we needed—towels, sunscreen, sweatshirts, and more—magically fitting it all in without fail.

While my mom took care of the essentials, my dad would be in the driveway, carefully staging and organizing our gear. My brother and I, eager to help, would load everything into our 1979 Sylvan 18 Sportster. This modest aluminum bow rider, powered by an 85-horsepower Evinrude, was our vessel for countless adventures. Every weekend brought a new destination: the Chain of Lakes, Crystal Lake, Lake Leelanau, Glen Lake, and more. It was as though we were explorers charting new waters, discovering a new corner of Northern Michigan each time.

One of our most memorable trips in the Sylvan was a camping weekend to North Manitou Island. I was around 10, and it felt like the greatest adventure I had ever been on. The island was incredible, but what stands out most is the harrowing journey home. A storm rolled in overnight, and by morning, we found our boat beached on

the shore. After some hard work getting it back into the water, we faced enormous waves on the return trip to Leland. I can still remember the feeling of being tossed around by the waves, my life jacket cinched up tight, convinced we wouldn’t make it. But my dad, with years of boating knowledge passed down from his father, expertly guided us home.

Fast forward a few years to 1993. My friends and I, now 15, had our hands on a 1991 Rinker 170, our ticket to freedom. Armed with boater’s safety certificates and just enough money for a ham and cheese sandwich from Long Lake Grocery, we spent the summer wakeboarding, slaloming, and

blasting Van Halen at the sandbar. It was pure bliss. Years later, I saw that same model of Rinker on the side of the road for sale. I couldn’t resist—I bought it. Little did I know that impulse buy would reignite my passion for boating and ultimately lead me into the industry professionally.

There’s something truly magical about being on the water. Boats bring us together, allowing us to create unforgettable memories, and I’m grateful to be part of an industry that helps others do the same.

CEO SPOTLIGHT

An Interview with Mercury Marine’s CEO John Buelow

CAN YOU RECALL SOME OF YOUR EARLIEST BOATING MEMORIES?

I’ve been a boater all my life. I grew up in a family that enjoyed boating, fishing and other recreational boating activities. My father was an avid angler, and he introduced me to the joy of fishing when I was young. I have many great memories with my family growing up, and this joy of boating stuck with me and I passed it on to my own family (wife and kids).

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE BOATING DESTINATION OR EXPERIENCE?

I’ve been fortunate to experience boating all around the world. I’ve boated across Europe, from the beautiful lakes and Fjords of Scandinavia, to the French Riviera. I’ve boated in Australia near the Sydney Opera House, the beautiful waters of Tahiti, and across North America, from Florida to New York and Canada – all wonderful locations I consider myself very fortunate to have experienced. However, the best boating experience for me is right here in Wisconsin, boating on our beautiful waterways with friends and family.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GET INTO THE MARINE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALLY?

I was drawn to the industry by my passion for boating and the opportunity to be part of an incredible company. Mercury is an iconic brand and the leader in the industry – we continue to innovate and help boaters enjoy their time on the water.

CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF HISTORY OF YOUR TIME & EXPERIENCE SINCE JOINING MERCURY MARINE?

I joined Mercury Marine in 2004 and during my Brunswick career held a variety of positions in finance, including vice president and CFO of Brunswick Marine in EMEA and Asia-Pacific. I also held several leadership positions at Mercury’s global headquarters in Fond du Lac including roles in business development, category management and strategic planning. Most recently, I served as Mercury’s vice president, Global Operations.

WHAT SETS MERCURY MARINE APART FROM ITS COMPETITORS?

Mercury engines are designed and tested to provide the highest performance and most enjoyable boating experience possible. Mercury’s recognition as a leader in noise, vibration, and harshness, as well as performance, sets us apart from our competitors.

HOW DOES CUSTOMER FEEDBACK INFLUENCE MERCURY MARINE’S PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT?

Mercury has developed a process called “voice of customer” to incorporate customer feedback into product development. This approach was adopted about 15 years ago, shifting from a “voice of engineering” approach where decisions were made internally.

We collect feedback from various customer segments, including OEMs, boat owners, and captains. We ask specific questions to understand the importance of different features to these customers. The feedback collected is used to quantify the importance of various features. For example, they might determine that fuel economy is twice as important as acceleration. This quantitative data helps Mercury prioritize features based on customer preferences.

We also use tools from the Design for Six Sigma methodology to compare different design options against the top customer attributes. This helps us optimize designs based on data rather than opinions.

Mercury also benchmarks our products against competitors. We compare performance metrics such as top speed, fuel economy, and noise. This benchmarking helps us make adjustments to our future products to better meet customer needs. This data-driven approach has allowed Mercury to hit sweet spots in the market, leading to successful products that gain market share.

HOW IS MERCURY MARINE ADAPTING TO THE INCREASING INTEGRATION OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE BOATING INDUSTRY?

Mercury has developed a module called Smart Craft Connect, which integrates digital technology into boats. This module plugs into the Smart Craft network and interprets engine data such as RPM, fuel economy, and tank levels. The Smart Craft Connect module delivers this data to multi-function displays (MFDs) from various suppliers. The data is presented consistently across different systems, ensuring that captains receive critical

information in a familiar format, similar to the consistency seen with Apple CarPlay in cars.

The module also has a wireless element that communicates with smartphones via Bluetooth. This allows users to access the same data on their phones, providing additional features such as cloud data storage and remote diagnostics by dealers. The wireless communication feature enables dealers to access boat data remotely, helping them diagnose issues before the boat comes in for repair. This improves the efficiency of the repair process and enhances customer service.

The Mercury app allows users to check fuel levels and other critical information remotely, which is particularly useful for planning trips. For example, users can check fuel levels before heading to their boat, ensuring they are prepared for their journey.

The Smart Craft Connect module is also integrated into Mercury’s Avator electric products, providing information on battery charge, mileage, and range. This helps address range anxiety, a common concern among users of electric boats.

The Mercury app includes tutorials for new users, guiding them through tasks such as connecting batteries and operating the tiller handle. This ensures that customers are well-informed and can make the most of their products.

HOW DOES THE COMPANY ENGAGE WITH OR GIVE BACK TO THE BOATING CULTURE AND COMMUNITY?

Mercury supports nonprofit organizations around the world that are dedicated to improving local communities, expanding access to recreation on the water and protecting natural environments. Our

community support efforts come in a variety of forms including financial or product philanthropy, educational scholarships, volunteer service events, collection drives and promotional partnerships.

CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY OF HOW THE REVOLUTIONARY V12 600HP MERCURY CAME TO BE?

The V12 was created to meet the growing demand for more powerful and capable outboard engines for larger boats. It was designed to replace multiple highpower outboard engines with fewer, more powerful units. The V12 was developed by our incredibly talented engineering team and in close partnership with our OEM partners. Using our advanced engineering and design capabilities, we completely redefined outboard performance.

We showed the OEMs a prototype of the V12 and asked if they wanted to design boats around the engine’s features. We had never brought builders in that soon in the process, and they rose to the challenge. The response to the V12 since we launched it in 2021 has just been incredible. It’s in a league of its own and it’s the quietest engine we build. We continue to see that category expand (50 ft and larger boats with outboards) and it has a lot to do with the V12. It enabled builders to think differently and to think bigger.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM MERCURY MARINE IN 2025?

You’ll continue to see more innovation from Mercury in 2025 as we continue to listen carefully to boaters’ needs and wishes, and create new product capabilities aimed at exceeding their highest expectations.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AT MERCURY MARINE?

I’m most proud of our employees. Not only do they continually apply their talents to innovate and develop products that our customers love, but they also care deeply about the communities in which they live and work and give back in a number of ways.

My Journey with the Pursuit 365 DC A LIFELONG LOVE OF BOATING

My name is Dr. David Martin, and for over 25 years, I had a busy career as a cardiac surgeon in Metropolitan Detroit, later becoming the Director of Cardiac Surgery at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

While my professional life was demanding, I always made time for what I love - boating. I’ve

been married for 44 years, and my wife and I have raised four children and now enjoy our seven grandchildren. Boating has been a constant throughout the years, offering a sense of adventure and balance to an otherwise hectic life.

My grandfather introduced me to the water when I was in grade school, taking me and my four brothers fishing in a rented rowboat on Saginaw Bay, off the coast of Caseville, Michigan. While we didn’t always catch fish, the experience hooked us all. Over the past 50-60 years, each

of us has owned a variety of boats, from small ski boats to larger motor yachts. My own homeport is the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, and I’ve explored the Great Lakes extensively, creating unforgettable family memories along the way. As my family grew, so did our boats, evolving to suit each new stage of life. Now, with seven grandchildren, the tradition continues.

After decades on the water, I’ve become a very discerning boat buyer. These days, my family and I enjoy the beauty and adventure of day boating throughout Northern Lake Michigan, cruising out of Bay Harbor Yacht Club. Years ago, driven by our love for being out in the open air, I decided to purchase a 29-foot bowrider—a decision met with skepticism by nearly everyone I knew. But it turned out to be the perfect choice for us. Since then, the concept of a large dual console has become incredibly popular across many boat manufacturers. My challenge then became finding the safest, most seaworthy dual console for our growing family.

The first time I saw the Pursuit 365 DC was at the spring boat show at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. After years of boating, I could tell right away that this boat met all my criteria. Six months later, I saw it again at the Grand Rapids boat show in the dead of winter, and by July 2023, I became the proud owner of Heart Throb V, thanks to the team at Walstrom Marine.

In just two seasons, my Pursuit 365 DC has been put to good use, from swimming with the grandchildren to watching fireworks over the Bay. This vessel is fully equipped, featuring the latest electronics and dependable triple Yamaha outboards, making every outing a pleasure. Its sleek design, quality fit and finish, and ease of handling have earned compliments at every port. The ride is smooth, and its functionality far exceeds what we formerly owned.

From my grandchildren to the adults,

everyone loves their time aboard this modern yacht. The Pursuit 365 DC is more than just a boat—it’s a continuation of our family’s boating legacy, with capabilities that will evolve as we do. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get back to fishing, just as my grandfather taught me all those years ago. Only this time, it’ll be in far more style and comfort than that old rowboat we started in. For me, that would truly complete the circle of life.

TIARA YACHTS

50 Years of Continued Excellence

Adeeply rooted passion, enthusiasm for innovation and design, and an unwavering focus on quality and craftsmanship have been woven into Tiara Yachts’ DNA since Leon Slikkers began his career building boats in 1946 in Holland,

Michigan. From humble beginnings to one of the marine industry’s finest boat builders, Tiara Yachts Founder Leon Slikkers has always been, at heart, a craftsman who enjoyed working with his hands. He built his first boat while working for Chris-Craft in 1946, started his first company, SlickCraft, in 1955, and in 1974, along with his sons David and Robert, Slikkers founded S2 Yachts, known today as Tiara Yachts, with a

single quest: to be the best.

From the very beginning, the Slikkers’ family mission was clear: only the finest would do, from materials and quality standards, through to the customer buying experience. It was Leon’s vision that Tiara boats would emulate the top; they would be coveted by their owners and known for being the best.

Five decades later, Tiara Yachts has become a leading manufacturer of luxury yachts from 34 to 60 feet while remaining a family-owned business. Recognized for the highest quality craftsmanship with exquisite fit and finish and an exceptional level of customer service, Leon’s vision – to be the best – remains alive and well.

As the company prepares for its next 50 years, the foundational building blocks of innovation, elegance, craftsmanship, quality, and exceptional customer service will remain at the center of Tiara’s iconic designs. Tiara’s current product line features two recently introduced inboard models— the EX 54 and EX 60, and eight outboard models across three distinct series—Luxury Sport, Luxury Express and Luxury Crossover.

EX SERIES

Radiating the inspired luxury that all Tiara vessels are known for, the EX series is purpose designed for owners who expect the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and luxurious, extended stays on the water.

Taking

the guesswork out of configurating settings, the boat is equipped with a Sea Ray custom surf interface powered by Mercury Smart Tow® presenting three pre-set modes for surfing, wakeboarding and skiing/tubing. Also, boaters can use the visual display to adjust the settings with the touch of a button to accommodate riders’ preferences and skill levels.

PURSUIT S 328

My pick this year is the Pursuit S 328 Center Console. There are a lot of advantages to this model, but in my opinion, the most important of these is its versatitlity. The S 328 is a serious fishing machine with all the creature comforts of a family day boat. You get the best of both worlds to keep your family and fishing buddies happy. On the fishing side, the boat has a huge, open aft cockpit with fish boxes on either side and a 24 gallon, lighted livewell. There are 9 standard rod holders with an optional rocket launcher on the hardtop. At cruise, the 300 gallon tank gives the boat a 420 mile range. This same aft cockpit quickly converts with an electric actuator to a face-to-face dining area with twin tables for entertaining. There is deep freeboard all around the boat including in the bow, which allows for four passengers to face forward while under way.

MJM YACHTS

If you desire superior performance, agile handling, quiet luxury in a down east style yacht with Carolina flare; Walstrom Marine is proud to offer MJM Yachts. There are four models to choose from: The MJM 3 and 4 are pilothouse bow riders and the MJM 35 and 42 are express cabin cruisers. In Northern Michigan, customers have enjoyed the versatility of the MJM 3 and 4, which offer an enclosed pilot house for weather protection and three forward windows that open as well as opening pilot house windows, bringing boaters closer to the water and feeling warm summer breezes. The quality construction offers strength and resilience, providing a quieter, more solid feel on the water. These yachts are built to withstand the elements. Don’t just take my word for it, here is some testimony from a happy MJM yachts owner: “Robert, I have enjoyed my early experience with my new MJM 4. I’m a car guy; I love the performance of my Ferrari, Corvette, etc. The MJM 4 performs like a sports car on the water. I love how it’s up on plane in seconds, literally no bow rise. The boat is quick and responsive, and I appreciate its versatility and social area. It is a remarkable boat, offering something for everyone.”

1

A MULTI-TOOL: My go-to is the Leatherman Wave, but any multitool with pliers, a screwdriver, and a knife will suffice. While a longer trip might call for a more comprehensive toolkit, for daily boating, a multi-tool is indispensable for quick fixes—whether it’s cutting through a line, loosening a hose clamp, or removing a fuel cap. I rely on my Leatherman every single day on the water.

2

MICROFIBER TOWELS: These are perfect for wiping down dew-covered windshields, cleaning up dirt, and drying off surfaces. They’re incredibly versatile, great for polishing stainless steel, cleaning glass, or even protecting dock lines from chafing. I always have a few stashed nearby for quick cleanup.

Essential Items Every Boater Should Have On Board

At Walstrom Marine, I’m lucky to operate a variety of boats daily. I might start my morning moving a customer’s 21’ Sea Ray and later navigate a 49’ Tiara down to Traverse City. The boats may change, but my gear remains consistent. Aside from the required safety equipment, ditch bag, and cell phone, here are five essential items I always keep nearby:

3 QUALITY POLARIZED

SUNGLASSES: After years of working on yachts in South Florida, I’ve found that brands like Costa, Maui Jim, and Smith Optics provide the best eye protection. Polarized sunglasses do more than just reduce glare—they help you spot underwater hazards and prevent eye strain after a long day in the sun. A good pair of sunglasses keeps your eyes feeling fresh and allows for better visibility on the water.

4 EXTRA WATER:

What might start as a 30-minute ride often turns into a full-day adventure, so I always pack extra water. Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on hot days when you end up out on the water much longer than planned.

5

ZIP TIES: Known as tie wraps or wire ties, zip ties are invaluable for securing flags, tidying up loose wires, or fastening gear. They’re small, lightweight, and versatile, making them a go-to item for any quick fix.

These five items may seem simple, but they’ve proven to be reliable companions on every journey. They ensure I’m prepared for both planned tasks and unexpected challenges that come with a day out on the water. Whether it’s solving minor mechanical issues, staying refreshed, or keeping things tidy, these essentials make boating easier and more enjoyable. Having them within arm’s reach helps ensure smooth sailing, no matter the size of the vessel.

Adding Your Marina to Your Policy WHY IT

MATTERS

Why does my marina ask to be listed as an additional insured on my insurance policy?

This is one of the most common questions at marinas in recent years.

Insurance can be hard to understand and follow. It changes regularly and can seem like you need a degree to keep up. Simply stated, it’s a way to manage your risk.

All marinas require their customers to have a watercraft insurance policy that includes liability coverage. Importantly, marinas often require being listed as an “additional insured” on the boat owner’s watercraft insurance policy. This helps protect the marina’s interests if your boat causes damage to the marina or another customer’s boat.

A common misconception is: “If I list the marina as an additional insured, they will be paid out on a claim filed for damage to my

boat.” This is not true. There is a difference between an “Additional Named Insured” and a “Loss Payee.” A lienholder, such as the bank, is usually listed as both on your policy. When the marina is added as an additional insured, it applies to the liability portion of the policy and is not applicable to any firstparty property damage claims.

Additional interest is something most policies list automatically. Additional interest simply means that the named party, Walstrom Marine in this case, is interested in the fact that the insurance exists. That is not what we are looking for. The additional interest party is not provided any coverage under the policy—even for claims caused solely by the actions or negligence of the named insured. Additional interest only gives notice if there are changes to the policy or if it is canceled.

Adding your marina, Walstrom Marine in this case, as an additional insured protects us from claims against the vessel that don’t involve the marina. For example, if the vessel is involved in a collision resulting

in bodily injury and Walstrom Marine is named in a lawsuit, the vessel’s insurance would defend Walstrom Marine as well as the owner of the boat. Additional insured provides coverage for third-party claims arising out of the actions or omissions of the named insured. Naming Walstrom Marine as an additional insured grants no rights to the ownership of the vessel; it simply protects the marina from the actions of the named insured.

There is usually no cost associated with naming an additional insured. If your insurance carrier suggests you pay a fee, call other carriers. This is typically a matter of them checking a box.

One more important factor to consider is that by providing this insurance to your marina, you’re also ensuring that your neighboring boaters have the same insurance. They have peace of mind knowing that you are covered, and you’ll know the same of them.

Simply stated, it’s a way to manage your risk and the marina’s risk.

WINTER PROJECT Recap

We are often asked what we do during the long Michigan winter to stay busy. In addition to the annual maintenance we perform on the boats we store, we also tackle a handful of larger projects at each location. These projects include engine upgrades, full electronics upgrades, cosmetic restoration, woodworking, and complete paint jobs.

Last winter, our Harbor Springs and Cheboygan locations each had multiple large paint projects. Two of these projects—a 38 Regal Grand Coupe and a 75' Burger—required extensive repairs to the hull sides before being primed and painted. Our technicians are trained and certified in DuPont, Axalta, and Awlgrip paint products. The damaged areas were ground out, filled, and faired to create an even surface. Primer was sprayed, followed by multiple coats of base and clear. The clear coat was then wetsanded and buffed to a mirror finish.

Our Harbor Springs, Cheboygan, and Traverse City locations also had significant repower projects. In Cheboygan, we removed four Mercury 450R outboards and replaced them with four new 500R outboards. Harbor Springs upgraded three Mercury 300 outboards to new models of the same horsepower. Meanwhile, Traverse City replaced two Evinrude 200 hp outboards with new Yamahas. In addition to the engine replacements, each boat received the latest controls, engine displays, and software.

If you’re contemplating a mechanical, electrical, or cosmetic upgrade to your boat, now is the time to contact your Service Department and schedule the work. All our locations have trained technicians with the knowledge needed to make your boating dreams a reality!

Nashville, a Llewellin Setter, is the beloved companion of our Chief Integration Officer, Amy Crouchman. Nashville is a big fan of boat rides and often lends a paw around the yard! Keep an eye out for him on the Algonac Harbor Club social pages, or follow him @nash.villellewellin.

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

Boating Michigan’s Lakes with

Man’s Best Friend

Taking your dog along for a boating adventure on Michigan's lakes can be a fantastic experience, but it requires a bit more finesse than just loading up and hitting the water. With the right approach, you can help your dog look forward to boating trips rather than feeling nervous aboard your vessel. Here are a few tips to make your boat truly dogfriendly, ensuring both you and your furry companion enjoy your time on Michigan’s beautiful waters.

INVEST IN A QUALITY DOG LIFE JACKET

Even if your dog is a natural-born swimmer, Michigan’s lakes aren’t your average backyard pond. Between waves, currents, and deep waters, a life jacket is a must. Look for one that has a handle, so if they go for an unplanned swim, you can easily pull them back on board. Bright colors are best since they make it easier to spot your dog in the water. Even if your dog doesn’t have it on constantly, having it available on board can be crucial in an emergency.

MAKE A GRADUAL INTRODUCTION

Before you take off for a big boating adventure, get your dog comfortable with the boat. Start by letting them explore while the boat is still docked. Turn on the engine so they can get used to the noise. Once they seem at ease, take them for a short trip on calm water. This helps avoid any surprises when you hit the bigger lakes like Michigan or Huron. Over time, they’ll get used to the sights, sounds, and movement.

SET UP A SLIP-RESISTANT AREA

Boat decks can be slippery—especially when wet. This can be tough for dogs who don’t have the best traction to begin with. To avoid any wipeouts, add non-slip mats or rugs in the areas where your dog hangs out most. It helps with their footing and keeps your deck scratch-free. Plus, it gives them a comfy spot to lie down when they’re tired from running around or swimming.

PLAN FOR COOLING OFF

Boating in the summer can get hot, and dogs don’t sweat like humans do, so it’s up to you to keep them cool. Make sure your boat has a shaded area where your dog can get out of the sun. Bring lots of fresh water. A collapsible water bowl works great for easy hydration on the go. And remember, if you’re hot, your dog is probably hotter.

DESIGNATE A POTTY SPOT

If you’re out on the water for a while, your dog’s going to need a bathroom break. It’s best to plan ahead by designating a potty area on your boat. Pee pads or a patch of artificial grass work well. Get them used to the setup before you leave shore, so they know where to go when nature calls. It’s not always convenient to pull up to land, especially on bigger bodies of water like Lake Michigan.

MIND THE DECK TEMPERATURE

In the summer, boat decks can heat up fast. If the deck is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Before letting them wander around, make sure the surface is cool enough to walk on. Booties can be helpful if you’re on the boat during peak sun hours, but at the very least, designate a shaded spot to hang out.

BE WEATHER-WISE

Michigan’s weather is unpredictable, and things can change quickly on the water, especially on the Great Lakes. Check the forecast before you head out, and be prepared to head back in if the water starts getting rough. Dogs aren’t going to enjoy being tossed around on choppy waters, and it’s better to cut the trip short than to have a stressed-out pup (or worse, an accident).

GIVE THEM A REST SPOT

After a day of swimming, running, or just being on their paws, your dog will need a place to relax. Set up a cozy spot for them on the boat with a blanket or their favorite bed. This gives them a familiar place to chill out and keeps them out of your way when you’re navigating or handling other boat tasks.

MIND THE WILDLIFE

Michigan’s lakes are full of wildlife, from birds to fish to the occasional curious otter. Keep an eye on your dog to make sure they’re not getting too interested in chasing after something they shouldn’t. It’s best to keep them in a secure area or on a leash if you’re in a busy or wild area. You don’t want them jumping overboard to chase a seagull in the middle of Lake Michigan!

HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN

No one expects an emergency, but it’s always good to be prepared. If your dog falls overboard, keep an eye on them, approach them slowly and cut the engine immediately. Use the handles on their life jacket to pull them back on board. Additionally, be prepared for minor injuries by keeping dog first aid supplies in your first aid kit. It’s a good idea to keep your vet’s number handy just in case, and know where the nearest animal hospital is if you’re out on a multi-day trip.

Taking your dog out on Michigan’s lakes is a great way to enjoy the water together, but it does take a little extra preparation. Make sure your boat is set up for their safety and comfort, plan for things like hydration and bathroom breaks, and always be ready for any surprises the water might throw at you. With a little prep, your dog will be the best (and cutest) boating buddy you’ve ever had.

CHARLEVOIX

A History of Visiting Boats

The cover of this year’s Docklines shows three pleasure craft leaving Charlevoix’s Round Lake harbor, passing through an opened bridge, which incidentally turned 75 years old in 2024. This is certainly not an unusual sight during the temperate seasons. But where have they just been? Perhaps they were tied up somewhere in the city yacht basin along the western edge of Round Lake, just below downtown Bridge Street/ US31, the town’s main artery and the only way through town. Maybe they’re coming from one of the marinas on Lake Charlevoix. Wherever they have just been, they are leaving what has long been regarded, by both pleasure and commercial mariners, as one of the best naturally protected harbors in the country.

In 1869, both channels were cut to connect Lake Charlevoix and Round Lake to Lake Michigan and the inland seas for the first time. Then the world began to beat a pathway to Charlevoix’s door. This cutting caused an economic explosion, which surpassed the wildest dreams of the Charlevoix Harbor & River Improvement Company. This determined group accomplished the channels’ creation for less than $1,500. Schooners, passenger steamers of all sizes, wood and metal lake freighters, tugs used for general haulage and fishing, Coast Guard boats, lumber hookers, government vessels, naphtha launches, and resorter sailboats poured in during the first few decades. By 1897, the Charlevoix Sentinel newspaper reported that more maritime tonnage was now passing through the waters of Charlevoix than any other port on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.

But motorized smaller pleasure craft? Not so much, in the beginning. That industry took a while to get started. Round Lake

First pleasure boat dock area, installed ca.1925-26

was chockablock with maritime commercial enterprises that occupied almost every inch of shoreline. The town’s two resorts, the Belvedere and Chicago Clubs, provided much of the pleasure dockage and boathouse areas for their own members. It wasn’t until the mid-1920s that the city began to receive requests for pleasure docking from outsiders and wisely acted upon it, if on a very small scale.

The first section of Round Lake to be designated solely for small craft was at its southwest corner between Antrim and Mason Streets, next to today’s Ward Bros. Boats, Inc. fueling location. This

once busy commercial hub had gradually disintegrated, even before the onset of the Great Depression in 1929. Round Lake was beginning to change with the times. Here, a grand total of five new docks, eccentrically spaced and of varying sizes, provided moorage for ten boats around 1925-1926. Now, boaters could enjoy the privilege of driving down to their dock, parking, taking a sail or cruise, returning, and driving back up to Bridge Street. Not long after the docks

were installed, the city replaced the initial rough roadway with an actual block-long paved road with curbing. The area above this, the east 400 block between the two streets, was transformed into a park complete with a bandstand.

It wasn’t until the complete development of East Park, in the depth of the Depression, that anything more happened. After a hotel in the east 300 block of Bridge Street burned in 1935, the city saw the view

through the gap and realized the potential for a magnificent park that would ideally stretch from the channel bridge, along all four downtown blocks, to Antrim Street. After a successful fundraising project, which involved both locals and resorters, all but two of that block’s decrepit commercial buildings were purchased and taken out, freeing up the land behind them. From 1937 to 1939, the crown jewel of Charlevoix’s park system transformed the land, efficient spaces for over thirty boats were added, and the original five docks were refurbished. A four-block park never did come into being, but what did certainly changed downtown and brought uncounted hundreds of additional pleasure boaters into the heart of town.

However, over the ensuing decades, as the demand for dockage steadily increased, all this development became woefully inadequate. The constant upkeep of an increasingly scruffy park and crumbling amenities, plus the replacement of stationary docks that battled the lakes’ high/low water level cycles, was simply not enough. In the late 1990s, a committee of

determined citizens laid the groundwork for a complete redesign of the park and yacht basin. They didn’t let one cubic inch escape their inspection and decision making. After nine years, it all came together. Between 2007 and 2009, the yacht basin was radically reconfigured with floating docks, which would accommodate over twice the number of boats. A large, acoustically perfect performance pavilion was erected, and the entire two blocks were relandscaped into something spectacular. The American Planning Association of Chicago and Washington, D. C. was so impressed with what Charlevoix had accomplished that, on its 2009 annual honors list of ten, in company with Lincoln Park in Chicago and the squares of Savannah, Georgia, Charlevoix’s East Park/ yacht basin complex was named one of the ten best public spaces in the United States.

BUT HOW WERE LARGER VESSELS HANDLED?

Charlevoix certainly has seen its share of some of the grandest yachts ever to sail

the Great Lakes and the world’s oceans. Seagram’s, L’Oreal, and IBM vessels have been visitors, as were those of Ivana Trump and Kid Rock. A few, like those registered in the Cayman Islands, have come in with strict orders not to divulge ownership or origin to anyone.

The Dorothea began life as an intended palatial yacht in 1898. Its owner died before it could be finished. The federal government bought the vessel and completed it as a “torpedo boat-destroyer,” which saw duty as a patrol boat off the coast of Cuba during the Spanish-American war. In 1901, the state of Illinois asked the government for a vessel that could be used as a training ship for its naval militia. The Dorothea was offered, and it served during the summers in Charlevoix through 1909, after which another boat took its place. It was quite

a sight to see this beauty depart from its center-of-Round Lake mooring into Lake Charlevoix for maneuvers, with its entire cadet crew formally lined up on both sides of the boat, all clad in their training uniforms and white hats.

The largest private yacht on the Great Lakes, the 225-foot Venetia stayed for a grand total of two days in July 1928. Owned by James Fairplay of Midland, Ontario, the vessel was so big it couldn’t be accommodated in Round Lake. The Venetia had to sail in, turn around, and come back down the lower channel to tie up against the cement revetment close to the former Coast Guard station. Fairplay was on an extensive excursion with some gentlemen friends. They stopped here to try out the recently completed golf course of Charlevoix’s Belvedere Club resort association, quickly recognized as one of the best in the country. So impressed was Fairplay with both the town and the course that he expressed the wish to return later in the season for an indefinite length of time. It’s not known if he made good on his intention.

Mizpah, the Hebrew word for “watchtower,” became the name of a vessel originally built by the Navy in 1926 as part of a new class of destroyers. However, the 185-footer was never commissioned, due to an international agreement to limit the sizes of the world’s navies. Three years later, it came into the hands of its third owner, Eugene McDonald of Chicago, head of the Zenith Radio Corporation, who gave the boat its name. “Mizpah” appears in Genesis 31:44-54 in the line “the Lord watches between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” The boat was one of the largest luxury yachts on the Great Lakes, sporting gold-plated doorknobs and carrying a crew of twenty-seven. Charlevoix was the Mizpah’s base for many summers. In 1932,

Venezia, here only once, July, 1928

it sailed in with several guests aboard, one of them sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who was taking a break from carving the presidential heads on Mount Rushmore. McDonald used the boat to test a rudimentary form of radar off Cocos Island near Costa Rica, and found it to perhaps have a future, little knowing the importance and scope of what was to follow.

And the greatest of them all, the incomparable 192-foot Sylvia was the fifth in a series of vessels named after the wife of Logan Thompson, head of the Champion Coated Paper Company of Ohio and a member of the Belvedere Club. Completed on spec in Maine in 1930 as one of five identical sisters, the boat had its own dock on Round Lake at the club. For some reason, Thompson dropped the Roman numeral V from its name. So svelte and graceful were the lines of the Sylvia, that when it traveled back and forth across Round Lake, it appeared not to be cutting through the water, but gliding atop it. Both pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Bridge Street came to a hypnotized halt whenever the boat made an appearance.

Sensing what was about to explode in an increasingly troubled world, Thompson donated his treasured yacht seven months

before Pearl Harbor occurred in late 1941. He knew all boats of this kind would be confiscated for war duty should hostilities erupt, so he willingly, patriotically did his duty in advance. In April that year, the Sylvia, with the Stars and Stripes painted mid-hull on both sides, made its farewell tour of Lake Charlevoix before heading out to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for gutting and conversion, never to be seen in Charlevoix again. During the war, it served as the Patrol Yacht Tourmaline. After the war, the boat was sold for the Greek war relief effort in 1946. Used as a freighter/passenger vessel in the Aegean, it was first named the Adelphic and later the Kyknos. The last trace of the stunning Sylvia was the mention of it being scrapped in 1979.

This is some of what Charlevoix has witnessed over the past century, during which pleasure boating grew into a major industry, producing vessels of all sizes and many types. The town is not able to have the largest marina in the immediate region, mainly because there is little, if any, room to expand in Round Lake. To do so would compromise the integrity of what Charlevoix is so fortunate to possess--the beautiful blessing that nature alone has

bestowed upon it. Reports have reached the Charlevoix Historical Society of first-time visitors being gobsmacked at the first sight of Round Lake, whether arriving by vehicle or boat. “We have traveled all over the world, and we have never seen anything to match this,” they declare. Well, a little justified bragging might be called for right here. In 2021, USHarbors.com declared Charlevoix’s Round Lake to be the best harbor in the United States.

The preceding article is based on an exhibit at the Charlevoix Historical Society’s Museum at Harsha House, 103 State Street, titled the “Maritime History of Charlevoix, the City on Three Lakes.” This exhibit will be open all year for viewing through December 2025. Brian and Kathy Mayhew’s

GREAT LAKES ADVENTURE

For Brian and Kathy, boating is more than a pastime - it’s an important part of their lives that has taken them on remarkable journeys and helped them to create countless memories. After many years exploring waters from Florida to Maine, they set their sights on a new challenge: a summer adventure on the northern Great Lakes. Their journey became an experience full of discovery, challenges, and an even deeper appreciation for life on the water. It’s a story that reflects the spirit of boating and the connections it creates.

A PASSION FROM THE START

Brian’s love for the water started early with fishing trips in small outboard boats with his dad. It wasn’t long before waterskiing joined the lineup after his dad bought a used aluminum runabout with a Johnson 35 engine. These childhood summers spent on the water ignited a passion for boating that would last a lifetime.

Kathy got into boating later in life but she quickly fell in love with it. “We both lived on Kent Island (Maryland) and each of us had a boat, so we shared that interest from the start,” she said. “Our second date was on my boat,” Brian added. “It was a beautiful day, we anchored in a cove and had lunch on board. Looking back, maybe that was a sort of a mutual compatibility check?” Decades later, that compatibility has translated into countless boating adventures shared together, and a life where exploring the world by water plays a big part.

LIFELONG BOAT OWNERS

By age 10, Brian saved up enough money from summer jobs to buy a small wooden daysailer and learned to sail on the lake near his family’s home. “My friends and I had a ton of fun with that little boat!” he recalled. Twenty years later he bought an 18-foot Wellcraft ski boat, and from then on boating became a constant in his life.

When children arrived, so did the need for a larger boat. Enter “IV PLAY,” a 1993 Cobalt 272, which became a family favorite on the Chesapeake Bay. “All three of our kids learned to water ski or wakeboard on that boat as did many of their friends,” Brian said. After many years of fun on the Bay, it was time to either overhaul it or replace it. The whole family liked the boat so much we had it completely restored, then moved it to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. “Our kids grew up on it, now our grandkids are, and after 31 years the whole family is still having fun on “IV PLAY” every summer!”

THE PERFECT MATCH: THE TIARA 36 CORONET

Today, Brian and Kathy’s primary vessel for adventure is their Tiara 3600 Coronet, aptly named “JUST IV FUN.” Living in South Florida, they needed a boat that could handle everything from exploring the Bahamas to casual cruises with friends. “We needed a well-built, seaworthy boat with plenty of enclosed and air-conditioned

seating, decent cruising speed, plenty of range, a big cockpit for diving and fishing, and a comfortable cabin for a couple. For cruising the Bahamas and Gulf side of Florida, we also wanted a shallow draft,” Brian explained. They found a Tiara that met all of these requirements at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Then, they customized the boat by adding racks for Scuba tanks, and for the out islands in the Bahamas where tank refills and fresh water are hard to find, they added a compressor to fill their tanks and a water maker.

JUST IV FUN has taken them on adventures that only boating can offer. In 2019, they embarked on a 4.5-month trip from Ft. Lauderdale up to northeastern Maine and back. Brian explained, “We also took her on side trips up several rivers including the Hudson, Connecticut, and some in Maine, and visited just about every place we had ever read about or heard of. We traveled more than 3800 nautical miles and lived on the boat most of the time.” Kathy added, “And miraculously were still married when we got back to Florida!”

EXPERIENCES ONLY BOATING CAN OFFER

The Mayhews have created countless lifelong memories on the water. Boating has opened doors to experiences that would have been unreachable any other way, including unforgettable encounters like: Swimming and free-diving with wild dolphins in the ocean near Bimini; a humpback whale surfacing less than 100 yards in front of their boat going into New York Harbor; idling along next to a 20-foot hammerhead shark leisurely cruising on the

surface in the Gulf Stream.

“JUST IV FUN has taken us to so many places we could not reach any other way, and so many experiences we could not have had any other way, our family refers to it as the ‘Magic Carpet,’” Kathy said. “A retired yacht captain in Portsmouth told us about a perfectly restored 1600s fishing village on a remote island off the coast of Maine. So we went out there and it was absolutely surreal, like a movie set,” Brian added, “and in the Exumas we had an entire island with turquoise waters and a pink sand beach all to ourselves”.

FINDING THEIR PATH TO WALSTROM MARINE

When the Mayhews started planning their adventure in the northern Great Lakes, they asked Tiara to recommend a “home base.” Tiara’s customer service team recommended Walstrom Marine’s Cheboygan location.

“Walstrom is a Tiara dealer with a full-service yard and small marina at Cheboygan,” Brian explained. “It is on Lake Huron, very close to northern Lake Michigan, and easy to get to Lake Superior from there, so it was the perfect home base for us.”

Trusting Walstrom’s expertise, the couple arranged for their Tiara 36 Coronet, JUST IV FUN, to be transported from Florida to Michigan with the help of Brink Marine Transport. Walstrom’s team ensured that everything was ready for the summer ahead. “Walstrom’s people at Cheboygan were great to deal with!” Brian shared. “Dave Cope and his staff are outstanding, and like so many other folks we met in the upper Midwest, very friendly and helpful.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE GREAT LAKES

From their base in Cheboygan, the Mayhews set off to explore waters unlike any they’d experienced. “After more than three months on these lakes, all we can say is ‘Wow! What an amazingly beautiful area to explore by boat!’” Brian reflected. “Crystal clear water and air, huge expanses of hills and forests, miles of cliffs and sand dunes, gorgeous beaches, waterfalls, thousands of islands, great fishing, lots of wildlife, really good craft beer, nothing is crowded, and the people are sooo nice everywhere.”

“Huron, Superior and Michigan are so beautiful and there is so much to see and do, it is hard to choose a favorite - but if we can only pick one, it would be Superior,” Kathy said.

ADVENTURES AND ENCOUNTERS ON SUPERIOR

“All of these lakes are beautiful but for scenery Superior has an advantage because it is so big, pristine, and wild, and the coastline varies so much,” Kathy shared. Brian summarized their route this way: “The south side starts with huge beige sand dunes, then colorful cliffs and big sea

caves, and forested mountains the rest of the way. The west side has cliffs, waterfalls, and huge mesas near Thunder Bay. At Isle Royale a ranger briefed us on what to do if we encountered a wolf or a moose, like the grizzly bear briefing you get in Alaska. The northwest part has a lot of big islands, the entire north coast is very rugged, and there are caribou on the Slate Islands. The east side has a huge wilderness area with no roads near the lake for 100 miles but there are plenty of protected coves to anchor in.”

Kathy added: “Some of our favorites on Lake Superior are Huron Island Lighthouse, Pictured Rocks, northern Keweenaw Peninsula near Copper Harbor, Madeline Island, Isle Royale, the Slate Islands, and Indian Harbor.” The quiet, pristine surroundings and encounters with bald eagles and other wildlife added to the magic of their time on the “Big Lake.”

HURON’S NORTH CHANNEL & GEORGIAN BAY – CLOSE BY AND GREAT CRUISING

Lake Huron’s North Channel offered a contrasting, gentler beauty that the Mayhews found enchanting. With its many quiet islands and protected anchorages, the North Channel became a favorite. “Huron’s North Channel is easy to reach and has a lot of beautiful islands and coves to anchor in and explore by dinghy,” Brian explained. White quartz outcroppings on the mountains are eye-catching because they look like snow on the ground among the pine trees during the summer! Georgian Bay has even more islands and some very

pretty fjords like Baie Fine and Collins Inlet, but it is busier than North Channel. Crossing Georgian Bay to Bruce Peninsula is well worth it because the scenery is a lot different with high headlands, long narrow bays, and pretty little towns.

Compared to Superior, Huron’s North Channel and Georgian Bay have narrower expanses of open water, more islands and coves, more towns, and all of these things are closer together. Among Brian’s favorites were “the cove on the north side of Hotham Island, the Bustard Islands, Lions Head village on Bruce Peninsula, the Antique Boat Show at Hessel, the restaurant in the Anchor Inn at Little Current, and Split Rail Brewery on Manitoulin Island.”

LAKE MICHIGAN’S NORTHEAST COASTLINE: CULTURE AND SCENERY

In contrast to the wilderness on Superior and Huron, Lake Michigan brought a mix of scenic coastlines and vibrant towns. The Mayhews explored the area from Sleeping Bear Dunes up to Little Traverse Bay, where they found plenty of small towns with rich local culture, great restaurants, and unique shops. “All of the towns in this area are nice and each one has its own character,” Kathy explained, calling out Leland, Traverse City, Suttons Bay, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs as favorite stops.

The clear, inviting waters of Michigan’s northwest coast made it a great spot for anchoring out and spending lazy afternoons swimming and sunbathing.

“Lake Michigan’s coast from Sleeping Bear Dunes to the north side of Little Traverse Bay is beautiful with hills, crystal clear water, really nice beaches, and it offers an amazing variety of year-round recreation,” Brian shared.

WEATHER CHALLENGES AND “WEATHER DAYS”

While they experienced mostly calm conditions, the Great Lakes’ weather can be unpredictable, so they relied on a personal rule they learned over the years: “Go when the weather is nice, leave early and get to destination by noon.” But even the best-laid plans sometimes went awry. An appointment ashore ran late, made their departure from Cheboygan much later

Laker in Duluth

than planned, turning that leg into a bit of a challenge and the only rough ride they had during three months on these lakes. “We left Cheboygan about 4 PM for the short run over to Detour Village on the north side,” Brian recalled. “The wind had been from the east all day, was fairly brisk as we cleared the breakwater, and the deeper water had white caps.” Heading northeast we were angling into the waves and wind with sheets of cold spray hitting the windshields and fogging them up. Stopping fogging caused by very cold spray was a new challenge for boaters accustomed to cruising in warm seas. “Our first reaction was to turn on the heat with the fan on high like you would in a car but this made the fogging worse. So we turned on the air conditioning which helped, and turned to parallel the waves to reduce the spray. That solved the fogging problem and gave us a much better ride” but after this experience Brian noted, “We never left late in the day again.”

Whenever weather, mostly high wind and waves, kept them ashore, they discovered even more things to do. Among their “weather day” adventures, they explored Copper Harbor’s rugged mountains, toured the Canadian Bush Plane Museum in Sault Ste. Marie and a huge “Laker” (ore ship) in Duluth, watched huge waves striking the cliffs and sea caves on Madeline Island’s north shore, and hiked to a big waterfall near Thunder Bay.

CHALLENGES AND GENEROSITY

One of the biggest challenges they faced was finding enough diesel fuel to explore the remote on the north and east sides of Lake Superior. “There are no marinas or docks with diesel fuel after you leave Red Rock at the NW corner of Superior until you get to Soo, and no commercial tow services on that half of the lake,” Brian explained. So they faced the dilemma of how to get enough fuel to continue exploring Superior’s untamed northern and eastern shores and get to Soo with a healthy reserve.

Fortunately, the kindness of strangers came through. After sharing their fuel dilemma with a fellow boater in Thunder Bay, they were connected with a guide willing to bring a120 gallons of diesel out to their boat and do boat-to-boat refueling. “We had to trust a marina owner in Wawa

we never met, who vouched for a guide in Marathon we didn’t know,” Brian said. “To our great relief, our trust in these strangers was justified.” This act of kindness allowed them to continue their journey and fully experience Superior’s wild beauty.

WALSTROM MARINE: A TRUSTED PARTNER

From the initial planning through the summer and into early fall, Walstrom’s team was there to provide a warm welcome, guidance and great service for the Mayhews. “Every encounter we had with Walstrom’s people was very positive,” Kathy shared.

Whether assisting with last-minute maintenance, offering advice on local attractions, or simply greeting them with friendly smiles, Walstrom Marine’s Cheboygan and Harbor Springs teams made a lasting impression. “Their mechanics were very busy but when I told them we had no fresh water in the cabin because our pump quit, they replaced it the same morning,” Brian noted.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: A RETURN TO THE GREAT LAKES

With so many memories created over the summer, Brian and Kathy found it hard to say goodbye to the Great Lakes. The warm waters of Florida are home but the wild beauty and friendly communities of Michigan, Huron, and Superior left a

deep impression. Even as they returned to Florida, plans were already taking shape to bring JUST IV FUN back to the northern Great Lakes the following summer.

Walstrom Marine played a pivotal role in their unforgettable experience, and the Mayhews are already looking forward to reconnecting with the team in Cheboygan next year. For Walstrom Marine, it’s been a pleasure to support Brian and Kathy’s journey on the Great Lakes. We look forward to being part of their next adventure and to helping them explore even more of what these remarkable lakes have to offer.

EMERGENCY Service Anytime

No matter how hard you plan or how much maintenance you perform on your boat in the winter months, there is always the possibility that you will need emergency after hours support. To provide this support and to give our customers peace of mind, we’ve instituted an emergency after-hours call service. By calling our main number after hours, you will be directed to a local call service that will then notify one of our senior personnel of your situation. That Walstrom Marine team member will then call you directly to assess the situation and work to get your issue resolved as quickly as possible. In certain situations, such as life or death or fire, the call service will also ask you to notify the proper authorities by calling 911. Calls made after 10 pm that are non-life threatening will be returned first thing the following morning.

In the summer of 2021, we had a few instances where this service came in handy for our customers. The services were provided between our Harbor Springs and Cheboygan locations. In all instances, our team was able to follow up with a phone call and bring our customers’ vessels in for repairs. Just as we had hoped, we are able to help our customers enjoy our short summers a little more by giving them this peace of mind.
