NEWS

Crooked Tree Arts Center is a community organization based in the arts, committed to providing quality and unique arts-related experiences to local individuals and those who are visiting and residing in the Northern Michigan region. Through fine art exhibitions, lectures, visual arts workshops, dance and music programs, concerts and more, CTAC inspires and enriches lives through the arts.

FROM BOARD CHAIRMAN – CAROLE CARROLL The experiences and wonderful friendships which have developed for me because of my position as Chairman of Crooked Tree Arts Center are more special to me than you will ever know! Liz Ahrens’ leadership and the staff teamwork are remarkable. The Board of Directors is made up of a group of dedicated men and women who believe in and support the values of CTAC. And, we have the BEST volunteers! I truly respect, admire, and love this organization. It has been a pleasure to serve as Chairman this past year. I know that Dan Ledingham will carry on the office of Chairman with much knowledge, experience, and a true belief in the future of CTAC. I will continue to serve on many committees and look forward to seeing you at upcoming events. Thank you ALL for your contributions. While we are enriching the lives of others through the arts, our own lives are also enhanced.

FROM LIZ AHRENS — PRESIDENT/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We invite you to join us for our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, September 26, in the galleries in Petoskey. CTAC Board of Directors will elect new members and officers, present the award for Volunteer of the Year, and review reports from our diligent committee chairmen. Welcome aboard to Ragnar Avery, Tom Bickersteth, Marilyn Crawford, Steven J. Fishman, Rob Harold, Jay Neff, Celia Sinclair, Robin Small, Elaine Smiley, and Ben Whiting! We have a few more potential board members but this is the list as we go to print. The full list of board and new officers can be found at the back of the newsletter. We are grateful to our outgoing board members, Maureen Bickersteth and Joe Hollis. My sincere gratitude to Carole Carroll and Tim McAndrew as they complete their terms as Chairman and Treasurer. Their dedication to CTAC is unparalleled! Want to know more about serving on our board or a committee? I’d be pleased to meet you for coffee and discuss how you want to be further involved with CTAC! – Best wishes to you, Liz

In 2014, CTAC partnered with artist John Sauvé to bring the Man in the City “Up North” as part of its summer exhibition, Detroit @ CTAC. The northern version of this installation joined Sauvé’s 40+ other sculptures on the rooftops of Detroit and Windsor. As the northern version of this installation winds down, CTAC wishes to thank John Sauvé and all of the host venues. The little orange men have been displayed in locations across our region from Crystal Mountain to Mackinac Island. We’ve enjoyed wonderful behind-the-scenes tours and stories at these special spots and we hope that people have enjoyed looking up! “Working with the Crooked Tree Arts Center gave me the opportunity to introduce the Man in the City project to Northern Michigan. D'ART FOR ART 20TH ANNIVERSARY— ATTENDEES OF ALL 20 YEARS Long time Crooked Tree Arts Center members, Jan Soblesky and Josie Flaherty both share a love of the arts and have happily supported CTAC by attending D’Art for Art since the beginning. Jan initially heard about D’Art through a friend, thought it sounded like a fun time, and gave the new fundraising event a try. Since her first D’Art, Jan’s collected enough artwork to cover walls, tables, and even her kitchen cupboards—she loves having artwork all around her! Josie first learned about D’Art while walking through one of CTAC’s exhibits, and she too decided to attend. Over the years, Josie has curated quite the collection of D’Art artwork, some of which she has surrounding her in Florida, and the rest she has given to family and friends. Thank you, Jan and Josie, for continually supporting Crooked Tree and the arts in Northern Michigan.

Thank you Paul Rutherford Photography, Sean Miller Photography, and Maggie Van Wagoner 13

A Long History of Supporting the Arts KURT AND PHOEBE WIETZKE are proud

Crooked Tree Arts Center members. Without a doubt, you’ve seen them around at CTAC events or supporting local restaurants, performers, and the like in Northern Michigan and beyond. Always excited to promote Crooked Tree, the Wietzkes have been happily involved with CTAC since the late 90s, serving as two of CTAC’s most energetic ambassadors. Their love and appreciation for art was nurtured early on by family and school. Phoebe was surrounded by her father’s Asian art collection growing up, and she favored art history and literature, always seeking to better understand art. Kurt focused on the math and sciences during his school years, but also experimented with the arts in his high school’s strong humanities integrated programs. As a teenager, Kurt enjoyed creating wooden sculptures in school, some of which he still has on display. With art holding a presence in the Wietzke’s lives since their youth, it only made sense that they plug into the Northern Michigan arts community when they relocated to Boyne City in 2000. Kurt and Phoebe were recruited by Crooked Tree members Martha Landis and the late Marilyn Davies—two other great ambassadors for the Arts Center—to get involved. Phoebe dove in, ready to be part of the organization and promote the arts, and Kurt was right behind her. Early on, Phoebe sat on the Performing Arts Committee, and Kurt continues to serve on the Finance, Investment, and Executive Committees. The Wietzkes have both served as Chairman of CTAC, a distinction shared only by one other couple— Bill and Jane Millar.

For almost twenty years now, the Wietzkes have supported Crooked Tree by introducing friends, family, neighbors, and new acquaintances to the organization. They love making new connections, and they love introducing people to CTAC, just like Martha and Marilyn introduced them to Crooked Tree years ago. Their outgoing and magnetic personalities allow them to walk into a full room of strangers, and walk out with several new friends and future Crooked Tree supporters. “We hope CTAC is around for another hundred years, and in order to do that we need to continue on our path of sustained and responsible growth,” said Kurt. “We want to get more people involved and to create more disciples for the Arts Center.” Kurt and Phoebe have graciously hosted artists, musicians, and filmmakers at their home; they patronize the Arts Center and other arts establishments on a regular basis; and they even dressed up like Santa Claus and an elf for the 2016 Countdown to Christmas! Through their role as patrons and ambassadors, Kurt and Phoebe have built lasting friendships and made great memories. “We hope Crooked Tree continues to bring as much enjoyment to others as it has to us,” said Phoebe. Some of their favorite CTAC memories include the second Manoogian exhibit in 2004, working the Million Dollar Dinner—a former fundraiser, participating in “call-a-thons” for the Capital Campaign, and getting to work alongside the late Edith Gilbert, one of Crooked Tree’s founding members. Their dedication to the arts even led to their nomination and consequent winning of the 2016 Individual Patron eddi Award. The Wietzke’s love for Crooked Tree and the arts has not gone unnoticed, and we thank them for all their hard work—every organization deserves to have a pair of big-hearted ambassadors like Kurt and Phoebe.

ROCOCO SOCIETY FEATURED ARTIST— LARISSA FLYNN My current body of work is lifted from my daily Northern Michigan surroundings. Just things that catch my eye long enough to focus my attention to the present. On occasion I work from life, but mostly from recollection. Sometimes I’ll jot a note or two on a random scrap of paper referencing place, color, mood, etc., to work from later. When I set myself down to execute my art it’s a chance for me to relive a fleeting moment I was privileged to witness in the middle of work, commitments, struggles, and play. The birch bark that makes an appearance here and there is acquired by happenstance. The first piece that wandered into a composition was found along the path to my mailbox. When viewing my minimalist and simplistic drawings and paintings, I invite you to get lost in the negative space. Wander in and out of areas that are lost in translation. To stand still, take in the calm, breathe, relax, surrender, and connect… the same experience I have when I take notice of the subject I’m compelled to translate and share. 15
