Willkommen!

And welcome to the 53rd Alpenfest. Our theme this year is “Alpenfest is Blumen Fun” and I can assure you fun will be had by all the entire week of our festival. Join us for art, entertainment, free food events, games and contests as well as carnival rides. This is a celebration for the entire family as the community of Gaylord opens its arms and welcomes you. We will jump start Alpenfest with the Honors Luncheon on Tuesday. Tuesday afternoon, Promise FM and volunteers from the community will be filling over 40,000 food packages under the Alpenfest Art Tent as part of a service project to give back to those in need. The opening ceremonies on the Jay’s Sporting Goods Alpenstage will take place Tuesday evening, followed by entertainment from Neshama, Jasmine Murray and our headliner band for the evening - Citizens Way. Stick around after the show for the Burning of the Boogg when all of our troubles go up in smoke, allowing us to enjoy the festivities worry free. Wednesday morning we will gather as a community for the Walking Parade which leads us into the World’s Largest Coffee Break. At noon the Midwest Dueling Pianos take to the Jay’s Sporting Goods Alpenstage to kick off a jammed packed day of entertainment. Over at our Pontresina Activities and Entertainment Tent we will be featuring juggling classes with Tommy Tropic, followed by a performance from the Gaylord Community Productions Children’s Theater. Our Art Tent, in its second year, is full of artist displays as well as live demonstrations, and hands on activities throughout the entire week. Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. we kick off our updated Ethnic Alley featuring German food, as well as a rousing good time with the Eric Neubauer’s Die Dorfmusikanten and his eight piece German band. Wear your German attire as prizes will be awarded for the best dressed. The evening concert will feature a return performance from Endless Summer taking you back to the big band sounds, the 50’s and 60’s as well as the latest hits to get you moving on the dance floor. Thursday Alpenfest keeps you going from morning till night. Activities for the entire family, along with free food throughout the day. Ethnic Alley steps it up a notch, as we feature Polish night beginning at 5:00 p.m. with Michigan’s own Big Daddy Lackowski and the La Dee Da’s under the Pavillion. Enjoy true authentic Polish dishes from food vendors in Ethnic Alley. Remember to wear your Polish attire as prizes will be awarded for the best dressed. At 8:00 p.m. move from the Pavillion to the Jay’s Sporting Goods Alpenstage as we have award winning country singer Drew Hale performing. Friday is another big day with free food, contests, performances from Rosco the Clown and Tommy Tropic, and at noon our Alpenfest Idol Tryouts. At 5:30 p.m. gather around the Jay’s Sporting Goods Alpenstage as we introduce Gaylord’s finest young ladies as they compete for the Alpenfest Queen’s Pageant and the coveted crown. Following the pageant at 8:00 p.m. you will be dancing in your seats as Alpenfest presents the Mega 80’s dance band. Dig out those acid washed jeans and hightop tennis shoes, and come dressed to have fun. After the show don’t go away, as Alpenfest presents one of the biggest fireworks displays in all of northern Michigan. Saturday is a full day of fun, fun and more fun. Alpenstrasse will open in the morning so that you can stroll the booths full of unique crafts. Our stores on Main Street will be open offering special sales and discounts to shoppers who want to take home a remembrance of a great time they had at Alpenfest. At 9:00 a.m. just before the Art Van Grand Parade, registration and staging will take place for our annual Classic Car and Truck Show on Court Street. Our afternoon entertainment features the always favorite Petoskey Steel Drum Band, Oktoben German Band and the Alpenfest Idol Finals, as well as performances by the Gaylord Community Orchestra and Band. The Art Tent comes alive at 5:00 p.m. with an art auction, entertainment and reception showcasing work from a number of our northern Michigan artists. Rounding out our busy Saturday, we conclude with our evening concert at 7:00 p.m. as we take you down memory lane with the band Phase 5 as they bring you all the hits from the Motown era. On behalf of the city of Gaylord, the Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Alpenfest Board, we invite you to share with friends and family, have fun, and enjoy this year’s 53rd “Alpenfest is Blumen Fun”. The Legend

HERR GESSLER OF

According to legend, Gessler was an evil ruler in Switzerland and Austria in the 13th century. He forced everyone in the area to bow down to his hat as a symbol of authority. Gessler would leave his hat in the square and all those who passed it would be forced to bow down. When William Tell, who had been hunting in the mountains with his son when Gessler came into power, came into the square he did not bow down to the feathered hat. Herr Gessler became so enraged that he arrested Tell and his son. As punishment, Tell had to shoot an apple off his son’s head. Tell succeeded and then turned his arrow on Gessler. Tell was able to overthrow Gessler and become the new ruler. Somehow Gessler was able to escape to Gaylord a few hundred years later. He now tries to ruin Alpenfest® for everyone by demanding quiet and that passers-by bow down to his hat. However, the Alpine Village wins over the evil tyrant with the sweet lyrics of “Edelweiss.”

The Legend of

THE BOOGG

Boogg, a giant snowman of cotton wool, symbolizes winter to the Swiss, and they burn the statue yearly with colorful pageantry to celebrate the beginning of spring. In Gaylord, the Burning of the Boogg has taken on new meaning and added delight. Alpine Village residents and visitors jot down their troubles and problems on slips of paper and then place them inside the Boogg. The Boogg is then ignited, and everyone’s troubles go up in smoke! Now all can enjoy the fun and festivities of Alpenfest®!

Lampion Parade

The Lampion Parade originated in Switzerland, where it also coincides with the burning of the Boogg during their spring celebration. Parsnips are hollowed out, and designs are cut into the sides. Next the lantern is then placed into a macramé basket, and a candle is placed inside. At Alpenfest®, children and adults cut designs into the sides and top of a box. The designs are then covered with colored tissue paper or plastic wrap. A flashlight is inserted providing light as well as a handle to carry the lantern. Everyone carries their lampion in a procession that takes the Boogg to its burning site.
