From the Director

Keeping pets together with their families Animal welfare has come a long way in recent years and the way that shelters like Little Traverse Bay Humane Society operate reflects that progress. There was a time, not so long ago, that conditions like heartworm could not be treated and simply entering the doors of any humane society across the country as a feral cat was a death sentence. I am thankful that this is no LTBHS Executive Director, longer the reality that we face Danielle Blasko. in our field. The “untreatable” has become “treatable,” the development of behavior modification and enrichment programs has allowed us to rehabilitate the most difficult cases, and even feral cats are finally getting the attention they deserve, which sometimes means creative re-homing tactics. Every animal that comes into our care at LTBHS is an individual in need of medical care, emotional support, or behavior training (and some may need all three!). We are able to treat each unique animal who enters our doors with an individualized approach thanks to generous members and donors like you. We literally cannot do this important lifesaving and life-changing work without you! I am grateful every day that my team no longer has to make the difficult decisions that faced so many animal welfare professionals before us. Our work is by no means easy and society still has a long way to go in the humane treatment of companion animals, but we are fortunate to live in a time of progress for pets and the people who love them. In addition to major medical and behavior modification developments, a monumental shift that has occurred in recent years is the rise of intake diversion programs. These have become a priority all over the country, including right here in our own community. The concept begins with the tough recognition that not all animals are best served by entering the shelter. Too often in the past, shelters have taken animals in that could have remained with the family that loved them if only the owners were given the support they needed to

care for them. This care might range from meeting basic needs like providing food during a temporary hardship to costly medical expenses like a major surgery. For example, shelters would intake an animal whose owner was surrendering them because they could not afford an emergency surgery. They loved the animal so much that they were willing to give them up in order to provide a better outcome, which they simply could not afford. And then the shelter would pay for the animal to have the surgery and re-adopt the animal to another home. An intake diversion approach makes us think twice about what’s truly best for each individual animal. LTBHS, for example, has established the Furry Faces Program, funded by individual donors and grantors like the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, which allows us to assist owners in paying for costly medical procedures. The newly established Pet Food Pantry provides food and litter to owners who may be experiencing temporary hardship as so many people have during the ongoing global pandemic. Both of these programs keep cats and dogs out of the shelter and in loving homes where they belong. Oddly enough, as you’ll see in this newsletter, COVID-19 and the resulting stay at home orders have in their own way led to fewer owner surrenders as people have relied on their pets to provide much-needed companionship during this challenging time. Of course, there is always going to be a place in our shelter for the pets who need us most and it is our ongoing commitment to provide best-in-class care to those who comes to us out of necessity. As we head into the holiday season and reflect on 2020 (which I’m sure we can all agree cannot be over too soon), we have a lot to be thankful for. After all we are blessed with the pets that complete our own families and we have made great strides in keeping families together. Thank you for choosing to be a part of it!

Staff Spotlight

Business Member Spotlight We are very fortunate to have a generous community of local businesses that give back. We will be highlighting some of these businesses in our upcoming Newsletter issues in our ‘Business Member Spotlight.’ This issue, we talk to Dr. Susan Malone, DDS/PC of Petoskey. She shares with us why she supports the mission of Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. Q: You have been a longtime supporter of Little Traverse Bay Humane Society. Why do you support this organization and its mission? A: I support LTBHS because I believe in the mission to rescue and save as many animals as possible, no matter the challenges involved. Also, every staff member I've come to know has been committed to the highest level of excellence and empathy in all that they do. Q: As a business owner, why do you feel it’s important to give back to the community you work in? A: I consider it a privilege to have the resources to support the programs I believe in in my community. I have always found that any of the volunteer programs and charities that we support have given myself and my team so much more in return. It truly is a "win-win" for us to have the honor to help others, especially these wonderful animals! Dr. Susan Malone, DDS/PC with her team.

Q:

Have you always been an animal lover? Tell us about your pets at home.

A: I have always been an animal lover! In our 36-plus years of marriage, Michael and I have had varied pets and breeds, with our dogs numbering two to three at a time, including our beloved rescue "Rocky"! We also loved our many rescue cats, bunnies, and fish. Our current canine kids are our two standard poodles. Henri is four-and-a-half years old and Hutch is 10 months old. We can't imagine our lives without the joy and delight our animals have brought us! To learn more about Dr. Malone’s practice, please call 231-347-6932 or go to: https://www.drsusanmalone.com/

Finding Joy In the Love of a

Pet

Buster, who was adopted by LTBHS Executive Director, Danielle Blasko in June.

and sanitizer, toilet paper, and…family pets? While it may seem strange to lump the three of these into one group, there’s something that they all have in common this year: the demand for each is significantly high.

When COVID-19 ascended in March and turned the whole world upside down, everyone had to get used to a new way of life very quickly. This was also true for the staff at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS) who rushed to establish a foster network and place all of the shelter animals in homes when the pandemic hit. Incredibly enough, after reaching out to supporters and the community as a whole, this seemingly impossible task wasn’t insurmountable after all. A wave of families and individuals willingly opened their hearts and homes to the shelter animals and the organization was able to place 100-percent of them within a matter of days. What was even better is that many of the families fell in love with their animals resulting in several “foster fails” which ended up being a positive outcome. And better yet, was the countless number of people who were interested in fostering and adopting during this time. The result was far more foster families and interested adopters than there were dogs and cats—a good problem to have when you’re working in animal welfare. The surging interest in fostering and adoption didn’t stop this past spring, and if anything, it grew during the summer months and has continued into the fall. The shift in many people’s working arrangements and dayto-day schedule has likely had a lot to do with this increase, according to Little Traverse Bay Humane Society Shelter Operations Manager, Kelsey Reimink. “There are so many people who have time for a pet when they didn’t before,” Reimink said. “They may be working from home or not leaving the house as much, and they now have time to potty train or introduce the animal to other household pets. They may have children who are home to help out. It’s been the perfect time for people to add a pet to their family.” This led to a shelter of empty kennels, and while out of state transports weren’t an option then, the organization focused its efforts closer to home. As it turned out, several shelters throughout Michigan were desperately in need of assistance. LTBHS worked to safely transport animals from various shelters across the state to Harbor Springs where they quickly found homes. “People have very much wanted to adopt this year,” Reimink said. “We’ve actually had a hard time keeping our kennels full,

Marcie Wolf and her husband Eric Davis adopted Zoey last July after losing their beloved dog Trekker earlier in the year.

which is a great problem to have. We feel very fortunate to have been able to help these other shelters, and a lot of good has come out of this.” Interestingly, another side effect of the pandemic is the fact that there have been fewer owner-surrendered animals this year. Reimink noted that the organization has seen less calls from people wanting to surrender their animals, and she attributes this to more people being home and having time to care for their pet. This, combined with the creation of the shelter’s Pet Food Pantry in May, (which provides food and litter to any owner in need) has resulted in fewer owner surrenders as we’ve removed the barriers to providing basic care for their pet. There have been countless uncertainties this past year, but the relationship that people have with their pets has remained strong during COVID-19. “A lot of people just want companionship,” said Reimink. “They’re lonely and want a friend to hang out with.” “One of the wonderful things about animals is that they take you outside of yourself and help you to focus on someone else,” she explained. “They force you to get up every day even when it’s hard to do so or depressing. By taking care of a pet, it helps people to focus on the needs of their animal and less on the negative.” Continued on page 6

LTBHS,” Michalewicz said. “They are our first cats and have been a joy and a real source of comfort. Each of us in our family has a cat of our “own” that has bonded with us, plus a fourth cat who is kind of like the house manager and nanny to the rest! The most special bond of all, in my opinion, is the one shared between my three-year-old and his “nitty-nat.” If he forgets to take her to bed with him, she’ll be waiting at the door to go in for snuggles. They’ve really helped us destress, improved our mood, and given us something to look forward to during these weird and hectic times.” It may seem strange to search for a silver lining in the past several months, but at the end of the day, more pets are out of shelters and into homes (foster and adoptive), which is exactly where they belong, according to LTBHS Executive Director, Danielle Blasko.

“We have an incredible facility and compassionate staff, but at the end of the day it is still a shelter and pets belong in loving homes,” she said. “Placing animals in foster homes Continued from page 5. also allows us to get to know the animals even better, and then to do our best matchmaking with adopters. The This was true also for LTBHS Executive Director, Danielle pandemic also seems to have directly resulted in fewer Blasko, who adopted an eight-year-old Pit Bull named owner surrenders, perhaps because people have had the Buster in May. Blasko originally meant to just foster Buster, time to put into caring for an animal.” but soon fell in love with him. “The whole world is going through a collective struggle “Buster has brought so much joy and laughter to my life. He today,” she continued. “What better way to cope than to add is such a character with a huge personality,” Blasko said. a loving pet to your home?” “And quite frankly he just looks hilarious. Everyone he meets adores him. I joke all the time that he has no idea that he is a Pit Bull: he loves to swim and retrieve, to chase deer off the property, and he absolutely hates going downstate to the big city! He snorts like a pig so we say his breed is “Pig Bull” when people ask.” Blasko isn’t the only one who has been grateful for the joy brought to her by an animal the past several months. Marcie Wolf and husband, Eric Davis, lost their beloved 10-year-old dog, Trekker, to cancer in early June. Feeling a huge void in their lives, they decided to explore the possibility of opening their hearts to another furry friend. Thankfully, they found just what they were looking for in Zoey, a one-year-old Black Lab who they adopted in July. “Our hearts were broken when Trekker died, and being so isolated due to COVID made it worse,” Wolf said. “Then we adopted Zoey at LTBHS on July 6 after her 7-day quarantine. She was a handful at first, but we’re all doing so much better today. Zoey gets two long walks/runs each day which has been great for me - I’m down a pants size! We are bonding more every day and she is a true comfort to us.” For Alyssa Michalewicz, the crew of cats she has adopted during COVID-19 have had a hugely positive impact on her family. “We have rescued four cats since COVID-19 and the ensuing quarantine began, two of them are sisters from

For the Michalewicz family, adopting four cats during COVID-19 has been a positive addition to their home, particular with her three-year-old son, pictured.

We asked:

How has your pet been a lifesaver since COVID-19 hit last spring? Tell us how they’ve helped you get through this challenging time. Lilly & Cruiser

I don’t know how we would have survived being quarantined for the last six months without our two dogs, Lilly and Cruiser. They provide comic relief every day with their antics, along with love and kisses.

Finley & Louie

I adopted my cat Louie through LTBHS four years ago. Finley is my Aussie pup I decided to bring into the family two months ago. He is such a joy. He motivates me to get out of the house and be active even on the most depressing days. He’s also given Louie companionship especially since our dog died last year. I can’t express how much he helps on a daily basis. Waking up to that face is exactly what I need to be productive and positive.

Dogs have been a huge part of my life for many years, but earlier this year, their unconditional love meant even more. It’s true that people who have animals in their lives are mentally and physically healthier. In times of difficulty, they will always carry the day and make you smile. -Bob Hull

It has been a long six months. I lost my dog right after Christmas but decided not to get another as I was planning on moving into an apartment. Well, the pandemic hit and my thoughts about moving came to a dead end. I was so lonely and saw a rescue “kitty” on Facebook and decided I wanted him that very day. Long story short, I have never had a “kitten” before (just a full grown cat) and had no idea what mischief a kitten can get into. He has kept me plenty busy, night and day, and still does This is my Grayson. -Carla Sare

Veterinary Clinic

Ask the Doctor Fall is here with the holiday season right around the corner. Little Traverse Bay Veterinary Clinic veterinarian, Dr. Katie Zubricky gives pet owners advice about holiday treats that are appropriate for your pet and the best ways to keep them healthy during this time. She also talks about the benefits of walking with your pet for National Take a Hike Day on November 17. Q: We have a number of holidays coming up that involve food. Can you give us some advice on how to keep our pets safe and healthy during these holidays? Are there any good holiday treats you can share with your pet safely? A: In general, I advise against giving pets table scraps. But, if you must, then healthy options include green beans, pureed pumpkin, cooked eggs, and small amounts of lean, boneless, cooked meat are a few you can choose from. Everything in moderation!

Dr. Katie Zubricky

With that in mind, you should be very cautious about which table scraps you give your pet and how much. Some can cause GI disturbances (including vomiting and diarrhea) or pancreatitis, which can require hospitalization. It may seem obvious, but you should never feed your dog raisins, grapes, onions (or garlic/chives), chocolate, or sugary treats. Studies have found that pets often fed table scraps are more likely to be overweight or obese. It can also lead pets to be fussier in the food they want to consume.

Q: November 17 is National Take a Hike Day. Why is it important to take your dog on walks and what are some of the benefits of doing so? On the other hand, what are some of the negative effects of a pet living a sedentary lifestyle? A: Regular exercise is good for helping your pet maintain a healthy weight, and keeping their mind active as well. The old adage, ‘a tired dog is a good dog’ is true! Keeping your pet active helps prevent boredom (and coming home to a chewed up pile of shoes!). Regular walks with your pet also increases the humananimal bond. Not to mention, regular exercise is good for owners, as well, so it’s really win-win! A sedentary lifestyle can lead to obesity, which can cause a myriad of health issues and can result in a shorter lifespan. So be sure to take some time every day to hike, walk, or play with your pet. They’ll have a great time and be healthier because of it!

Make your fall grooming appointment It’s fall, and now is the perfect time for a new hairdo for your pet! We have two new groomers on staff, in addition to longtime groomer, Patty Howard, who is back after recovering from an accident this past summer. We welcome Noelle Mallory, who has been with the organization for over a year and has recently transitioned to her new role as a groomer. We also welcome Naomi Behrmann, who has years of grooming experience, and we are happy to have her on board! Noelle Mallory

Adopting/Youth

Adopt a shelter dog this fall When is the best time of the year to adopt a new canine companion? When it comes to cats, it doesn’t make as much of a difference since they’ll be inside using a litterbox anyway, but with dogs, we argue that autumn just might be the perfect time! And why is that, may you ask? We like to think that cooler weather is perfect for training, first of all. Whether you’re potty training a new puppy or working on basic obedience commands with an older pup, there’s a good chance that the weather is conducive to whatever you’re doing outside. It’s not hot and muggy as it can sometimes be in the summer, yet you’re not wading through a foot of snow to potty train your puppy. It’s also a great time of the year for going on long, leisurely walks! The temperatures are likely to be perfect for both you and your pooch and what better way to enjoy the changing colors than with your new friend? By adopting a dog this time of year, you’ll also have some time for them to acclimate to their new life and routine prior to the craziness of the holidays. While Christmas is always a popular time to adopt a pet, there’s already so much going on, that it may be difficult to devote the necessary time to training, getting to know your new pet amiss the busyness of the holiday season can be stressful for both of you.

Not to mention, October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! The goal of this is to bring awareness to the number of shelter dogs across the country that are in need of homes and to celebrate the joy of adoption! So if you’re looking for a new canine companion, this just may be the best time to do it! To view all of the dogs available for adoption at LTBHS, go to www. ltbhs.com.

A community of young philanthropists At Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, we believe that learning to be kind to animals starts at a young age, and so does giving! We are so very fortunate to have a wonderful community of young people who care so deeply about the homeless animals at LTBHS. From birthday donations to lemonade stands and more, we have a passionate group of kids who support the lifesaving mission of the shelter. From the bottom of our hearts to the tips of our tails, we are thankful for them!

Happy Tails

Happy Tails Read below as we share some of the ‘Happy Tails’ of our past Little Traverse Bay Humane Society shelter residents. These lucky pets have gone on to find forever homes, and we are thrilled that they now have families to call their own.

Eddie

Adopted September 3, 2020

Eddie is amazing! It was so hard to come back in and try again because my heart was hurting so much after Sadie, but I am so glad we did. Eddie is clingy for sure, and has very few manners when it comes to nosing the garbage can and being by my kitchen counter, but we’re working on that. It is a night and day difference from a month ago. He’s confident, and happy, and sweet - he takes treats so gentle, he will not get on the furniture (despite our permission to do so), we haven’t had to play a chase game for potty time, and no accidents in the house. Thank you so much for being patient with us, and kind with your animals and truly looking out for their, and our, best interests. Fingers crossed things continue on this path, and we will continue to keep you updated. -Jill Suitor

Hal

Adopted August 31, 2020

Hal is doing great! He’s meshed well into our home, and he is showing me more quirks every single day. He loves to sleep under the covers in my bed and loves to beg for treats (and it takes some major self-control not to give him any). He is very popular with my friends because he loves everyone! My home is covered with his favorite springs that we play with constantly. I have enjoyed having him every single day, even if he did immediately knock my fish off the counter (it was my fault, I should have known!). Hal and I are a great pair. I am so happy to have him. -Margot Zink

Otis (Buster) Adopted August 7, 2020

Otis is doing so well. He and Gus are best buds and play constantly. He loves chasing the squirrels in the yard and looking for toads in the flower beds. We are working on learning that flowers beds are off limits, but we will get there. Toads are pretty fun to chase. We did have some food aggression issues, but now we just feed them separately and he is starting to eat slower and is more relaxed. He goes into his crate and sits and waits for the okay to dig in. Gus did a great job picking him out. He loves to snuggle and has learned to sit, down and wait with verbal and hand signals. He is a smart boy, and we are so happy that he has found his forever home with us. -Kristen Harris

Five Star Favorites

Five Star Favorites Some shelter residents are adopted quickly while others wait longer to find a home. No matter how long it takes, every animal has a temporary home with us until they find a permanent one. Read about some of our long-term shelter residents who are still waiting to find a forever family.

Laker

My name is Laker, and I’m a ten and a half year old Boxer/Bulldog mix that was found as a stray well over six years ago. If you’re good at math then you’ve probably figured out that I was nearly four years old when my original family abandoned me and I became a resident at LTBHS. At the time I was truly devastated, but fortunately for me I was adopted within a very short time. My new family filled my heart with love and I made many friends over the years. I hope you can imagine how I felt when everything fell apart for the second time in my life. In just a matter of days I lost my forever home and my best friend ever when they passed away. With all the coming and going of strangers in my home, I was confused and frightened, and then I was returned to LTBHS. It wasn’t long before I re-acquainted myself with some old friends and quickly made new ones. All was well once again and I soon settled down. And now that I’ve lost a few pounds—I’m sure you understand emotional eating during stressful times—with a proper diet and plenty of exercise, I’m really starting to feel like my old self again. I have more pep and I’m looking forward to a fun filled retirement with a new forever family. The only stipulation is that I’ll probably need to be an only pet, and that’s because I’ve gotten used to being a spoiled--I mean single--guy for the latter part of my life. They say you can “teach an old dog new tricks”, but in my case probably not. I’m more of the “old habits die hard” thing. Nonetheless, I need a home that will love me for who I am for and in return I promise that I will give you my heart.

Renae

When you come to LTBHS it’s more than likely that you won’t see me at first because I’m not a socialite. My name is Renae and I’m a small one year old tiger cat. During these trying times I was transported from another shelter with too many cats. I’ll admit that it’s nice to have all this space to roam around in, that is, when I’m in the mood. Once in awhile I wander down to the lobby to visit the staff and some of the other quiet cats, but most of the day I lounge in my cozy little bed up on top of the cat condos. One of my favorite pastimes is watching all the activity below me. Needless to say, I’m a shy little girl who prefers a tranquil environment, so that means no small children, dogs or active young cats. Placid older cats are fine as long as they like me and give me some time to adjust. If you have love, patience and maybe a few yummy kitty treats, I’ll be your forever furry friend in no time.

Kaia

My name is Kaia and I’m a beautiful one year old Pit Bull mix. I was a rescue dog from down south and because things were tough for awhile, I may have picked up some unwelcomed habits. Ever wonder why some dogs cower and won’t even give you a sniff, while others approach with a wagging tail and lolling tongue? I know I do, and believe me, in my heart I wish I could be like that; openly friendly with everyone. However, there’s always something inside of me that puts the brakes on when someone unfamiliar approaches. Interestingly enough, once I’m familiar with you and I start to feel comfortable, I’m a very devoted little girl. And it was with this hope that I was taken in by a wonderful foster family who’s helping me work through this awkward situation. We’re currently polishing up my “stranger danger” socialization skills and so far I’m making great progress. In addition, I’m also learning how to use a crate and how to enjoy playing with squeaky toys and tennis balls—not all dogs know how to amuse themselves. Another thing, some dogs actually dislike other dogs and that’s me, so I need to be an only dog. However, I’m okay with cats and older children. I’m eager to have a quiet meet and greet with you, so I can show off my new social skills.
