PERSEVERANCE An “Annual Report” covering the months of March 2020 to June 2021

When the world paused, our trail building did not.

Boyne Valley Trailway The 6.3 miles between Boyne Falls and Boyne City got a little more pedestrian friendly in 2020. Twenty years of community effort paid off when the trail was finally paved connecting the two communities.

The picture in the background is a sneak peek of the new trail.

Charlevoix and Nakwema Trailways Burt Lake Trail Opened in 2020, the latest section connects East and West Burt Lake Roads along Riggsville Rd through the University of Michigan Biological Station. Road shoulders were also improved along East Burt Lake Rd for more friendly use.

In 2020 the trail team raised over $60,000 to begin the next phase along the north end of East Burt Lake Rd, planned to break ground in 2021.

Steady progress continues!

Little Traverse Wheelway The LTW washout happened just before the pandemic began, but thanks to your support we’ve been able to work hard to find a solution. We helped develop a “Westside Connector” concept to add a new trail along US 31, creating a safe detour and adding a permanent trail connection in that corridor. TOMTC is leading the charge to rebuild the original trail on the bluff and we need your support to step up that work to the next level.

In 2020, along with our partners, TART Trails, we launched the Nakwema Trailway - a 45+ mile trail between their network’s terminus in Acme and the Little Traverse Wheelway in Charlevoix. This incredible connection will create nonmotorized trail that stretches from Alpena to Suttons Bay! A long-awaited enhancement that will also benefit this connection is the Charlevoix Trailway that will take trail users away from Waller Rd, and more directly into downtown Charlevoix via this new connector.

Volunteers We couldn’t do what we do without the support of dedicated volunteers - maintenance crews, Wheelway Ambassadors, ski groomers, and Trail Center Ambassadors.

Despite COVID-19, volunteers masked up and took to the trails – clearing trash and debris, as well as assisting trail users – doing all they could to enhance the trail experience for new and seasoned trail users as a result of increased trail use.

Put on Pause Kid’s Biking Initiative

Unfortunately COVID meant two years of Emmet County fourth graders without KBI, but coordinator Cindy Okerlund is planning for the future. This program has been offered a generous $25,000 grant if we can raise the funds to match it - which would be enough money to support the program for three years.

This summer Cindy is running group rides along the KBI route to raise money and awareness. Please donate today!

Stafford’s Top of Michigan Festival of Races

We missed the faces of all of our runners, especially the elementary kids who participate in the 5k during our Festival of Races. We look forward to cheering you on in 2022.
