BOARD OF TRUSTEES
FROM THE PRESIDENT Ever wonder why our magazine is entitled “Country Life?” If you have, then you know exactly why living or visiting here is relaxing and invigorating at the same time. Our Township’s Master Plan describes our area as “high quality rural life.” Rural here in West Traverse means a quiet, scenic character. Quiet doesn’t mean boring but rather peaceful. You can hear the gentle rain. Scenic doesn’t mean amazing man-made structures. It means vistas of natural beauty. To preserve this rural character, the Township and Birchwood have mutually agreed to certain ordinances and Bylaw/Rules on development and behaviors.
Nancy Sarowski President
Make loud noises after a certain time at night and Security or the Sheriff will pay you a visit and ask you to “keep it down.” There is a development density that we respect in order to preserve open spaces and natural beauty. The pace in our rural area is slower than the urban areas. Not slow as in “manana.” Just slow enough so that you can stay in touch with what’s important in Life: God, loving relationships, health, and laughter. Ed Murphy Vice President
Neil Loney Treasurer
If we’ve been away to the city or a more congested area, upon returning, we breath in the fresh air and relax as soon as we come over the hill and see the Bay. When we drive into Birchwood, the green calms us down and we’re glad to be home, even if it’s just for a few months. High Quality Country Life requires that members be of high quality.
Kathy Thompson Secretary
Dave Borchers Trustee
Caring for our neighbors, maintaining our property, respecting the community’s desire that everyone’s behavior is always respectful of others. In some places, rules are a nuisance and exist to be broken. To those of us who love living here, rules are expressions of what High Quality Country Life entails. We dress appropriately and tastefully at all times. We speak in quiet tones and with language that is not offensive. We’re grateful for those who serve us in any way. We don’t endanger others with our vehicles or pets. This is the time of year when spectacular colorful vistas appear in the distance and in our own back yards. Enjoy what many in the world would love to see, let alone live in: Northern Michigan, Harbor Springs, Birchwood.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER I hope everyone enjoyed their summer season here at Birchwood! It truly was a great season and so nice to see everyone together again. As wonderful as our 2021 season was, it was not without its challenges, especially dealing with the labor issues that have plagued Northern Michigan and, in fact, most of the country. A special Thank You to our Membership for your continued support for your Club as well as our team. Birchwood really has the finest Membership of truly caring individuals and we appreciate you. It's October 1st and as I write this, I'm reminded of what my father used to say: we make plans and God laughs. This is sort of how I feel about our 2021 season here at the Club. Paul Marazzo We had a lot of plans entering this season, some went very well and some didn't for a General Manager variety of reasons. I really want to recognize our core staff that helped guide us through the season. It was this team that, when plans unexpectedly changed, they truly rose to the occasion to get the job done. A big Thank You to our staff. Continuing on the topic of our excellent core staff, I would like to announce our Employees of the Month Winners from the past few months. These associates have been nominated by their Managers as showing exemplary dedication and service to our Membership and Club. Please help me in recognizing these individuals for their dedicated service to our operation. For the Month of June, Rob Antoine in our Culinary Department was nominated by Sara Tye our Director of Catering. For the Month of July, Julia Will in our Food & Beverage Department was also nominated by Sara Tye, our Director of Catering. For the Month of August, Payne Schanski in our Racquets Department was nominated by Chuck Reisig, our Racquets Director. Finally for the Month of September, Patrick Morris in our Security Department was nominated by Derek Williams, our Chief of Security. Congratulations to all and sincerest Thank You for your dedication to Birchwood. These individuals, along with the other 2021 Employees of the Month will be vying for the Employee of the Year title! As we begin to shift gears into the autumn and winter months, our Executive Sous Chef, Rob Antoine is preparing our new fall/winter menus. In our Maintenance Department, Meredith Coy and his team are gearing up for the snow to fly, while the rest of our team is transitioning from the business of our summer season to getting ready for the upcoming Holiday season. Remember to watch for our Birchwood Happenings emails as well as our newly redesigned website for upcoming dates and event information. Thanksgiving is our next Club-wide event, and it is right around the corner! We will be serving our Traditional Family-Style Thanksgiving Dinner with all of the trimmings on Thursday, November 25th from 12:00-3:00pm.

Be sure to make your reservations soon! As always, we will be offering our Thanksgiving To-Go program as well this year! Be sure to inquire with the Club about our to-go offerings for this day of tradition - we are more than happy to do the cooking for you! By the time this issue of Country Life is out, our new Racquets Director, Chuck Reisig will be back in Arizona where he spends his winter months. I want to thank Chuck for a great first season at Birchwood and his dedication to our tennis and growing pickleball programs! It was a pleasure to have him as part of our team and yes, Chuck will be back next year. Look for Chuck to return to Birchwood next April! As most of you know, Birchwood is growing. Just this year we have added 10 new single family homes to our community and the work has begun for a 20-unit condominium project called, The Ridge. With new construction comes new members. I want to welcome all of our new members to Birchwood and welcome back all of those who have rejoined through Birchwood's Emeritus Program. Welcome to you all - we are pleased to have you as part of our community! To the members that have left or are preparing to leave Birchwood for warmer climates this winter, we wish you safe travels and very much hope you enjoyed another Birchwood summer. To those year round members, I will see you all soon at the Club for Game Nights, Potlucks, and Weekend dining.
guidance was greatly appreciated. I also want to thank our Board of Directors for their support and guidance. A special thank you to Dave Borchers whose term on the Board has come to an end. It was a pleasure working with Dave. On an endnote, I would like to share this special note with the Birchwood Membership, that shortly after I arrived here, I realized that Birchwood was not your stereotypical country club. Many members, who have been members of Birchwood for years continue to tell me, they can't believe how beautiful our club is and how special it is to live here at Birchwood. Birchwood is truly a wonderful community surrounded by some of the most scenic landscape anywhere. I know I speak for the entire management team when I say, we are committed and excited about the growth and future development of our community, and understand that we must meet the demands of the future without losing the mystique of what makes Birchwood so special. As we begin to bring 2021 to a close, I truly want to thank the Membership for your unconditional support. Cheers to an exciting 2022! Paul Marazzo, CFBE General Manger/COO paul@birchwoodcc.com (231)526-2166 ext. 512

DIRECTOR OF GOLF Please find following the final results for our Club Championships: • Men’s Club Championship • Men’s Sr. & Legend Championship • Mixed Couples Championship • Labor Day Scramble • WGA 9 & 18 Hole Division Club Championship
Greetings from the Golf Shop! Wow, where did this summer go? As I write this fall article, I can’t help but reflect on this last season. We started out with a bang and it did not let up! The weather in northern Michigan was pretty good for the most part and we were spared the torrential rain that flooded southern Michigan a couple of times. We hosted all of our annual Club events, a few new events along with a couple that were re-scheduled from 2020. The weekly BWA Mixed Golf continues to be our best attended event. We saw 80+ players on more than one occasion. It was a very busy summer to say the least! Our last Country Life edition ended with final results through the Independence Day Scramble so let’s get caught up on the rest of our final results. This year’s Men’s Green Coat Invitational hosted 78 teams. This year’s Champions were repeat winners from 2019 (no event in 2020), Member Jim Perry and partner Mike O’Hara. Two weeks later the Women’s Silver Birch Invitation saw 20, 4-person teams (18-hole) and 4, 4-person teams in the 9-hole division compete. This year’s 9-hole Champions were Members Joan Young and Mimi Fitzgibbon paired with guests Katy Lewis and Martha Miller. Our overall Champions in the 18-hole division were Member Leslie Jones paired with guests Ardyce Conley, Suzanne Hubner and Cathy Kalahar. Congratulations again!
2021 Labor Day Scramble Winners George & Gail Torreano and Barbara & Duane Alvesteffer

Our Men’s Day year-long “Birchwood Cup” and the WGA’s year-long “Race for the Points” both came down to the final week of play. George Torreano edged out Paul Temple to win the coveted Birchwood Cup while WGA Chair, Deb Baker, picked up enough points over Vicki Parrott and win this year’s Race for the Points. Congratulations to all and big thanks to Steve Henderson and Linda Temple for tracking the statistics throughout the season. There were two new events added to the calendar this year that were well attended and a lot of fun! The ACE Shoot-Out was a competition between all of those that had a hole-in-one this year. In addition, anyone that was in our HIO Club could also participate. Our Members with the perfect shot this year were: Lou Achille Linda Temple Suzanne Upward Mark Gregerson Dennis Hogerheide Bob Levy

2021 Men’s Senior Club Champion George Torreano
The other new event, the Glow Ball Scramble, was attended by 32 players competing in a 3-hole scramble. We lit up 8 holes on the Farms and Birches course and headed out at dusk. There were a lot of laughs before, during and after the round! I look for both of these events back on next year’s calendar. In closing, I want to thank our Golf Committee for all of their efforts and support. It’s been a great season but we’re always looking to improve. I know that there are areas that we can enhance and make for a better experience and we will continue to do so. Thank you to our Members for their continued support, participation and patience during a crazy couple of seasons. I also want to thank all of my entire staff in the golf 2021 WGA 9 & operation. The golf shop staff and outside staff did an excellent job this season! Sure, there were a few hiccups along the way but overall they gave it 100%. As we all know, staffing has been a big issue for everyone in the service industry and Birchwood was no different.
2021 WGA 18 Hole Division Gross Club Champion Pam Tyler
For those traveling for the winter season, I wish you safe travels. For those that will be around northern Michigan, I look forward to seeing you. Have a safe, healthy and happy winter. Sincerely, Cris Cavitt, Director of Golf PGA Professional 231-526-6245 Ext. 517

RACQUET SPORTS PROFESSIONAL GREETINGS FROM THE RACQUET COURTS! As our outdoor racquets season comes to a close, it is time to reflect on a great season and to look forward to an exciting 2022. What was so surprising to me in my first year at Birchwood was the great passion for Racquet sports and the helpful dedication of committee members and volunteers. It is that passion which made this such a special year and what makes Birchwood, Birchwood. As we move forward to the 2022 season we will continue to build the Racquets program with a wide range of programming. From first time racquet holders to advanced players, from 4 years old to 95 years old, we want you to be challenged, entertained and involved.

Birchwood Outreach Fund We are all in this together! It is a team effort and with your donations to the Birchwood Outreach Fund you join many fellow Birchwood Country Club Members. Together, we partner with local organizations to make a difference in this community we all love. Let’s keep it going and build on our success. The Birchwood community and our partner organizations are very grateful for your support. In 2021YTD, the Birchwood Outreach Fund has supported 9 local organizations, 3 of which are featured here: We helped provide housing through our support of the Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity. This year our Habitat for Humanity partner will provide new homes for the families of a teacher, a construction worker, a dental assistant, an employee of the Northwest Michigan Health Department and the employee of a property management company. Limited affordable housing is our area is a critical issue for workers and their families.
We helped provide the opportunity for youth to develop important life values and leadership skills through our support of the First Tee of Northern Michigan. 450 children participated in the program this year learning the game of golf and its important life values such as integrity, respect and perseverance. The program also hires 15 local students as coaches, who learn important leadership skills and job related responsibilities. Our 2021 donation allowed First Tee to update much needed software.

We helped provide for women and families in jeopardy through our support of the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan. The BOF 2021 grant is being used to improve security at a Safe House and the WRCNM main offices. The Safe House provides a temporary home for women and children of domestic abuse. Due to the sometimes violent and unpredictable act of fleeing from an abuser, the security of the safe house is being enhanced with locks, secure windows and alarms. The Center also provides many other resources, such as educational and employment services and a free preschool program.
Congratulations to all of the BOF donors!! Your contributions continue to make Birchwood a leading force helping to meet the needs of this community. The BOF Committee is proud to represent our current donors and applauds each of the new participating members joining the effort that will make a difference. To contribute, please make checks payable to: Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation 616 Petoskey Street, Suite 203 Petoskey, Michigan 49770 Please remember to write in the memo line: "Birchwood Outreach Fund" Or go online to phsacf.org/giving/donate/ and be sure to indicate the donation is for the “Birchwood Outreach Fund” Thank you very much for helping to make a difference – Your Birchwood Outreach Committee.

SECURITY & EMS Security and EMS Greetings Birchwood Members, my name is Derek and I would like to introduce myself as the new Chief of Security and EMS here at Birchwood! I have been with the Birchwood Security Department since October 2020, and have extensive experience as an EMT and Law Enforcement, and I am also an EMS Instructor/ Coordinator. If I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet, please stop by the security office the next time you are at the Club! Recently, Jeremy Spencer, our former Chief of Security moved on from Birchwood to pursue other opportunities, and I am honored to step into the role of Security Chief. I would also like to take this time to introduce Patrick Morris as Assistant Chief of Security! Patrick has been with our department since February 2015, and will be of great assistance with the day -to-day responsibilities within the department. It seems like just a couple of weeks ago we were welcoming everyone back to the Club and getting ready for a another great summer season. In the blink of an eye, summer has come to a close and members are preparing to leave for their winter destinations. Please remember to fill out the Winter Home Inspection forms before you leave for warmer climates! I sincerely hope everyone enjoyed this season as much as we did. It was good to see the Club active again. On to the subject of COVID-19: the spread of COVID- 19 and the D Variant is starting to ramp up again. Communities and hospitals are seeing increased numbers throughout many states as well as locally in Emmet County. Our
EMS department received supplies from the state to help protect us while taking care of those who screen positive for COVID-19 such as disposable gowns, N-95 masks, and gloves. In the event you have a medical emergency and have to dial 911, the Dispatcher is going to ask questions to determine if there is a possibility of COVID-19 in the home, please take the time to answer these questions to help protect the responders coming to help you. These questions are being asked after an ambulance and Birchwood EMS has been dispatched, there will never be a delay in our response. Take the precautions mandated to keep everyone safe and healthy whether you are going to the store or travelling to destinations outside the area. Remember, you can never be too cautious.
ACSC
The Architectural Control Committee remains very busy with seven homes under construction right now along with four homes and a 20 unit condominium project approved to start construction. There are also numerous home improvement projects taking place all over the property. This is exciting for Birchwood as our community is growing! As always, review the Rules and Regulations to make sure your property meets the requirements of the POA. If you need a revised copy of the rules and regulations, please contact the Chief of Security or the Assistant Chief of Security to assist you. Thank you, Derek Williams, Chief of Security & EMS derek@birchwoodcc.com (231)526-2166 ext 549

Greens Condominium Association
Restored Rock Wall After several years of neglect, the members of the Green’s Condominium Association (GCA) donated money to restore a major landscape feature on Greenway Drive. The large rock wall has several terraces to support evergreens, flowers and shrubs and is the main landscape feature on the west side of Greenway Drive. The purchase of over 100 plants, shrubs and flowers including hydrangeas, lilies, butterfly weed, mugo pines and annual flowers was orchestrated by newly elected GCA President, Dr. Robert Levy and wife, Cherie. Deer resistant plants were selected to provide color and interest, and perennials were disbursed throughout the wall to provide many years of enjoyment for residents and visitors. The irrigation was adjusted to sustain the plantings throughout the growing season. The members of the GCA are enjoying the restoration and encourage our neighbors to walk or drive by and admire the colorful rock wall. Just another reason to enjoy Birchwood!
