Dear Friends,

We are honored, once again, to share the Community Foundation’s Annual Report with all of you. This year’s report is special, highlighting not just the growth and impact of the Community Foundation in the past year, but also celebrating the many “Seasons of Impact” in this, our 30th year.

In 1992, we started from scratch, when a small and committed group of thoughtful and well-intentioned community members rallied around this big idea . . . that a Community Foundation might be the perfect place for donors, large and small, to exercise their charitable intentions in a positive way. They got it right, and the community has benefited in countless ways because of their visionary leadership.

Today, we’re humbled to continue the work they started, and we know that those who follow us will do the same. You see, this commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens of Charlevoix County isn’t just a sometime thing . . . it’s an all-the-time thing.

As we celebrate this year, and our first 30 years, we’re thankful for all of you that have kept us on the path of growth and success. Every donor, every Legacy Society member, every nonprofit partner, every board member, every volunteer, every team member . . . everyone . . . who has engaged with the Community Foundation to help us along the way. We’re mindful that it is on your shoulders that we stand.

As we recognize this year and all that is in our past, we do so with great excitement about the future of the Community Foundation. Here, we don’t just think about today. We’re also intentional about tomorrow, and every tomorrow after that. We’re committed to being precisely the kind of philanthropic resource that Charlevoix County needs and deserves in all the “Seasons of Impact” that lie ahead.

With gratitude,

Chip Hansen and Fred Malpass on the Joining Jordan boardwalk in downtown East Jordan.

Establishing roots.

In the Community Foundation’s 2022 Input Survey, housing was identified as the top need for growing thriving communities. Housing isn’t a new issue. In fact, a 1996 grant to the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance funded a study to better understand the need for affordable housing in our region. The housing challenge won’t be solved quickly, but there has been remarkable progress over the years.

Working with support of the Community Foundation, Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is building and rehabilitating more homes each year, and Northern Homes Community Development Corporation continues to create housing solutions, while offering financial counseling for new homebuyers. New organizations like Housing North are providing expertise and leadership to encourage steps in the right direction. Municipal partners are on board too, as they see the importance of having a variety of housing options in their communities.

We know that some things take time and the right conditions. Grant by grant, build by build, the Community Foundation is here to nurture good ideas and respond to community needs.

Cultivating giving.

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) provides opportunities for young people to make a difference in their own communities through grantmaking and volunteerism.

Since the YAC got started in 1992, the teen representatives have recommended grants totaling $1.2 million!

This year YACers completed a Youth Needs Assessment to learn about the greatest concerns and most positive influences students experience to guide future grantmaking.

In response to the results, the YAC will seek to decrease stigma and increase education around mental health. A new but related focus will aim to improve school atmosphere — increasing acceptance and belonging for youth at school and decreasing school related stress.

This group of dedicated teens is learning by doing, growing their knowledge of community impact, and cultivating a healthier path forward for their peers.

In 30 years, countless grants have been made to help friends and neighbors in need. During the economic struggles in 2009, the Urgent Needs Fund was established to grow resources dedicated to meeting peoples’ most essential needs and it continues that support today. Our area is fortunate to have nonprofit organizations that offer diverse and important services. Community Foundation grantmaking aims to meet individuals’ needs and strengthen partners serving our friends and neighbors.

Looking out for one another has always been a priority for Community Foundation donors.
Nourishing our neighbors.

Growing for good, for ever.

Susan Van Wieren has as many connections to the Community Foundation as there are leaves on a tree. Her late husband, Gordon Van Wieren, facilitated the earliest discussions among the Community Foundation’s founders back in 1991. Her daughter, Cathy Atchison, joined the Community Foundation’s staff as a program officer several years later. Susan also learned about the impact of the Community Foundation during her time as an Assistant Superintendent at CharEm ISD. “Then, when I read the story in an annual report about Sandi Laucher Button starting a fund – she’s a friend of mine – I remember thinking that I would like to do something lasting when I had the capacity. Seeing Sandi’s story really planted that seed for me,” says Susan.

In 2021, Susan was working with her financial advisor and reached out to the Community Foundation to learn more. After consideration, Susan opted to establish two funds for impact now and also made a plan to support causes she cares about most when she is gone.

“Cathy’s work with the Community Foundation all those years ago influenced me to establish the Susan and Gordon Van Wieren Fund for the Community. I don’t need to direct how every dollar is spent and I know those flexible dollars can make a difference.

The Susan Van Wieren Endowment that will be established when I’m gone will send contributions every year to the charities that are close to my heart. Community Foundation staff worked with me to consider and construct my legacy — I care about supporting those who are facing challenges and who need to know there are options for moving forward. My contributions through the Community Foundation will do that work, now and in the future.”

Sustaining support.

It’s not an overstatement to say that our lakes and rivers are central to the quality of life in Charlevoix County.

Beautiful Lake Charlevoix is a source of pride, a place for enjoying the outdoors, and a primary driver of our region’s economy. Comments made in the Community Foundation’s 2022 Input Survey made it clear that grants should continue to focus on preserving and protecting the rich natural resources that are abundant in Charlevoix County. With funds dedicated to environmental education, protection, restoration, access, and sustainability, the Community Foundation intends to do just that – for the next 30 years and beyond.
