Chairman’s Report

These words, penned in 1882, remain true 140 years later. In 2022, our Foundation Board, staff, volunteers and community partners all shared in “taking a turn at the helm.” As such, and consistent with our strategic plan, our Island community grew stronger by working together.

We have many great examples of these shared efforts this past year. Working with others, we were able to: promote winter classes through the City’s Recreation Department; assist Mackinac Connect in its weekly events; support the Mackinac Island Arts Council with its employee dinners. These, and many other events, all benefited Island residents.

Many other took the helm as well. Though there are too many to recognize individually, I wish to highlight the generous gift by the Grand Hotel for providing new offices for our Foundation staff. If you have not seen the new offices, (behind the Gate House) please stop by and say “hi” to Stephanie and Maria.

While 2022 was a tough year for the stock market, we want to assure you that our investment strategy remains sound. We held true to our investment guidelines and expect to rebound soon.

Once again, I appreciate the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Foundation. I value the efforts of so many and want to express my gratitude. Together we can do even more! For good. Forever. For everyone.

James J. Murray, Chairman
