Community Sustainability
Creating a thriving Mackinac Island for seasons to come
Mackinac Island Community Foundation promotes the general well-being of Island residents and visitors by working in community partnerships to generate endowed and un-endowed funds and stimulate community-wide initiatives. Throughout 2022, MICF continued to strive for this mission through fulfilling various strategic objectives. These included strengthening financial capabilities, building stronger operations, cultivating partnerships, and taking a greater leadership role on Mackinac Island by tracking community needs to initiate the appropriate response through proactive grantmaking.
Strengthening Financial Capabilities
• Donor-advised fund dollars continue to multiply, generating greater impact in specific areas of need on the Island
• Growth of unrestricted funds, such as the Island Community Needs Fund
• Increased number of grants made through the Island Community Needs Fund
Building Stronger Operations
• Restructuring the grantmaking process, including launching GoApply grant application software
• Becoming more technologybased with increased utilization of AkoyaGO foundation software
• Moving to a new office location, sponsored by Grand Hotel
Cultivating Partnerships
• In partnership with LMAS District Health Department, distributed COVID-19 tests, PPE, and other healthcare supplies to Mackinac Arts Council cultural celebration events
• Member of the Mackinac County Wellness Coalition
• Partnership with Shepler’s and Mackinac Island Ferry Company to provide ferry tickets to Medical Center patients
Leadership Role
• MICF office is a meeting hub for organizations to discuss potential programs and how the foundation can support them
• Granting towards community enrichment programs, such as Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church Employee Meal Nights and Mackinac Arts Council’s Employee Dinners
• Tracking community needs through surveys about housing, childcare, recreation, and other focus areas
Chairman’s Report
These words, penned in 1882, remain true 140 years later. In 2022, our Foundation Board, staff, volunteers and community partners all shared in “taking a turn at the helm.” As such, and consistent with our strategic plan, our Island community grew stronger by working together.
We have many great examples of these shared efforts this past year. Working with others, we were able to: promote winter classes through the City’s Recreation Department; assist Mackinac Connect in its weekly events; support the Mackinac Island Arts Council with its employee dinners. These, and many other events, all benefited Island residents.
Many other took the helm as well. Though there are too many to recognize individually, I wish to highlight the generous gift by the Grand Hotel for providing new offices for our Foundation staff. If you have not seen the new offices, (behind the Gate House) please stop by and say “hi” to Stephanie and Maria.
While 2022 was a tough year for the stock market, we want to assure you that our investment strategy remains sound. We held true to our investment guidelines and expect to rebound soon.
Once again, I appreciate the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Foundation. I value the efforts of so many and want to express my gratitude. Together we can do even more! For good. Forever. For everyone.
James J. Murray, Chairman“A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.”

We’re proud to support Island youth through furthering their higher education goals
Throughout the school year, students at Mackinac Island Public School learn the importance of philanthropy by participating in the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The Youth Advisory Council is made up of MIPS students and an adult advisor, and makes grants towards youth-oriented and community enrichment programs, such as horseback riding lessons and winter recreation opportunities. YAC members also volunteer in their community, helping with the annual MICF Community Celebration Picnic, and delivering Meals on Snowmobiles in the winter months.

How you can make a difference for seasons to come
Legacy Society member Nancy C. Reeser made a generous impact on the future of both Mackinac Island youth and healthcare in our community. Ms. Reeser, who passed away on October 6, 2021, achieved a successful career in design and advertising, building a connection to Mackinac Island through her graphic design work for the Grand Hotel and the Musser family in association with Carleton Varney. Her legacy on the Island will continue through the Nancy Reeser Scholarship Fund for Women, directed towards female Mackinac Island Public School graduates, and the Dr. Richard, Jr. and Mrs. Catherine Ernestine Reeser and Dr. Richard Reeser Fund, which honors Ms. Reeser’s parents and grandfather and will provide support for the Mackinac Island’s healthcare facilities, currently consisting of the Medical Center.
