From the Wheelhouse

We blinked and another boating season in Northern Michigan was over. It goes too fast! I hope that you enjoyed time boating in our Great Lakes and inland waterways with friends and family and made many more memories on the water.

This year we also welcomed many new families to this wonderful pastime we call boating. I was thrilled to see so many new faces experiencing what many of us already know, that time on the water

with family is the place where memories are made. It was shared with me more times than once this summer by our new boaters, what a welcoming fraternity the boating community is. From lending a hand with docklines, to inviting the new boat across the dock to cocktails, boaters are always eager to make new friends. As we finally begin to return to our more normal activities post-pandemic, we are busy working on our schedule of events and cruises for 2023. If you are new to the Walstrom family, or know someone who is, please be sure to join us this summer for a fun-filled event or cruise!

On November 15 we welcomed Grand Bay Marine into the Walstrom Marine family. Grand Bay was founded by Liz Carney and her husband Kevin in 1997. Over the past 25 years they have grown to be the largest boat dealer in Traverse City and one of the largest Regal Boat dealers in the country. The Grand Bay philosophy of superior service to the customer and the team aligns well with the Walstrom Marine culture. We are thrilled to add the many customers and over 40 team members to our family. Grand Bay Marine currently has locations in Traverse City and Charlevoix. The addition of Grand Bay Marine will strengthen our sales and service presence

in and around Traverse City and Lake Charlevoix.

2022 once again saw our team achieve record results. From the sales, delivery, and the storage of the largest number of units in our history, the Walstrom team once again proved to be the best in the business! The Walstrom team each year provides the best in customer experiences while serving a greater number of boaters year after year. The team at Walstrom takes the charge of delivering boating excellence and your fun and enjoyment seriously. While we serve more and more boaters each year, we are committed to maintaining the same level of personalized service that you have come to expect at Walstrom Marine. If there is ever anything we can do to enhance your boating enjoyment, we want to hear from you! I remain so proud of our team and the jobs they do. My commitment is to continue to support our team in any way I can to continue their career growth at Walstrom Marine.

See you on the lake,

ACQUIRES GRAND BAY MARINE

November 15, 2022 Harbor Springs, MI

Walstrom Marine announces the acquisition of Grand Bay Marine as part of its ongoing effort to expand its operations across the Great Lakes region. Founded in 1997, Grand Bay Marine has been owned and operated by Liz Carney and her family. With locations in Traverse City and Charlevoix, Grand Bay Marine has positioned itself as the country’s largest retailer of the Regal Boat brand.

Mrs. Carney and her husband, Kevin, will assist in the ownership transition. Their daughter, Rachael Milliman, will serve as General Manager of the Grand Bay Marine Traverse City location. Tom Ervin, President of Walstrom Marine, will oversee the overall Grand Bay Marine business.

“We are honored to welcome Grand Bay Marine to the Walstrom Marine family, “remarked Ervin. “Grand Bay Marine has built a strong customer base and a leading position in the Traverse City market. Grand Bay Marine’s dedicated staff and expertise in the marine industry will be an asset to Walstrom Marine and all our Northern Michigan clients. With the addition of the Regal brand to the broader Walstrom Marine business, we continue to build our offering and drive our long-term strategy to be the premier Marine operator across the Great Lakes.”

Grand Bay Marine’s 38 employees will remain with the organization post-acquisition. In addition to being a boat retailer, Grand Bay is a full-service marine dealership offering service, storage, parts, and pro-shop gear from their showroom. Grand Bay focuses on premium sporting boats and offers a wide range of brands, from Regal and StarCraft to Godfrey, Bayliner, Robalo, and Berkshire. Grand Bay Marine also offers heated and cold indoor and outside storage during the winter months.

“As we thought about our succession, finding a partner who shared our passion and commitment to our customers was critical,” remarked Carney. “Walstrom Marine is undoubtedly

the best fit to carry our company forward. I’m so thankful to our wonderful employees and loyal customers, and I know they will be well served for years to come.”

The acquisition follows the investment in Walstrom Marine in 2021 by an investor group led by Continuum Ventures, the family office of Doug and Maria DeVos. The investor group also included the Jim Mestdagh family and the Pete Beauregard family. Additionally, the Ward Walstrom family retained an ownership position in the business. This same investor group will now own Grand Bay Marine and follows their recent purchase of Algonac Harbour Club in July 2022. The collective investments in Walstrom Marine, Algonac Harbour Club, and Grand Bay Marine further Continuum’s efforts to build the leading premium boat dealer and marina operator in the Great Lakes region, starting with Michigan.

Walstrom Marine, founded in 1946, offers a full-service boating experience in Northern Michigan with locations in Harbor Springs, Traverse City, Bay Harbor, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan and proudly represents some of the finest boat brands – Tiara Yachts, Pursuit Boats, Sea Ray, Chris-Craft, Nauticstar, Crest, and Lund.

from Rivertown NEWS

It’s said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. I was pondering this oxymoron as I began thinking about all the changes I have witnessed at Walstrom Marine throughout the years. There have been many, from personnel and management to brands we carry, services we provide, and the expansion of the company with new acquisitions across the state.

I remember when I was offered the position of service writer in Cheboygan in 1999. I was told that, due to the Labor Day holiday, I could just show up at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Ward Walstrom sensed a slight hesitation in my response and asked me if there was a problem. I explained that it was going to be my son’s first day of kindergarten, and I wanted to take him to school. Ward smiled and said, “By all means, take him to school!

We’re all about family here! Come in when you’re finished.” I’ve never forgotten that, and during the next several years, Ward graciously allowed me the freedom during the school year to participate as the PTO Vice President, then President, school fundraising chairperson, and Scholastic book fair organizer.

When I arrived at Walstrom Marine, there was one computer in the office, but no marina-specific software. It was mostly utilized to research parts online. Work orders were handwritten, in triplicate format. Technicians stamped their timecards, and each time segment was a sticker that was placed on the back of the appropriate work order to be calculated manually when the job was complete. Filing cabinets were packed with hard copies of service records for current and previous customers. On my first ever flight, I was sent to West Palm Beach, Florida to receive training for DockMaster software, to help implement the program in Cheboygan. A few months later, there were more computers in the office, and DockMaster was up and running, printing invoices on pin-fed paper. I surely don’t miss the racket of that loud printer, nor the awful, squawky sound of the FAX machine and of connecting to the internet, pre-wifi days.

Handling storage was always my favorite aspect of my job. The tracking of

square footage sold and remaining was done on Wilson Jones columnar pads for the first couple of years I worked here. Former service manager, Larry Kozlowski, had magnetic boards made for each of our storage buildings. We mocked up each building’s exterior walls and created magnets cut to scale for every boat we stored. It was a puzzle to lay out each building in such a way as to maximize our capacity.

Every now and then, I was called upon to assist the technicians. Once, I was asked to squeeze into the cramped quarters of a dash panel to unscrew several electrical components which were being replaced. I managed to fit myself inside and breathed deeply through the claustrophobic conditions to twist and shimmy from one end of the dash, back around to the other and out the hatch again. I came out a little scratched and was bleeding, but it was all in the name of customer service. The photos that were taken of me going into the opening and coming out dirty, with disheveled hair have long since been destroyed.

Another time, I held onto a line attached to one of the four stanchions of a tuna tower that was being lifted into place atop a boat with a crane. Three technicians held the other lines, and we were to guide it into place. The rope I was holding was

quite a bit shorter than the others, and as the tower was lifted, I suddenly found myself being lifted, too. I yelled to the crane operator, who couldn’t hear me over the noise, and the others began flailing their arms and telling me to let go. A crowd of Ryba Marine workers across the river stopped to watch what was happening. I didn’t want to let go, because to do so would mean I would fall into the river. I was eventually lowered down to the grass and walked back to the safety of my desk, my cheeks a little flushed.

During the past 23 years, I have seen structural changes to our buildings, the addition of a new building, and conversion of unheated buildings to heated. I have worked with six service managers in Cheboygan, and countless technicians, parts managers, and office personnel. We switched software programs a couple of years ago and have learned together how to process things in a different way. Most of our contracts, invoices and forms are emailed to customers, and we don’t have to keep hard copies of them as they are saved in our computers. Technicians punch

in and out on tablets to each job they are assigned and can take pictures and enter pertinent information such as engine hours and hull numbers. Technological advances have allowed us to do our jobs more efficiently, and with the ever-increasing workload as we have grown over the years, that is a welcome change!

In 2009, I became the office manager in Cheboygan and have handled a host of duties, from accounting to service, storage, and dockage, to assisting in the Ship’s Store and handling some of the HR duties. As the company expanded, additional staff was hired, and now my main duties are service billing, storage, and dockage. Storage requests continue to flood in, and there are long waiting lists for each location. Digital contracts and spreadsheets have replaced the paper documents of the past, and the magnetic boards have been put to rest.

I have met many customers throughout the years, and some from my early days at Walstrom Marine, now retired from boating, still stop in to say hello from time to time. There are a handful of employees who have been with Walstrom Marine

longer than I, and we sometimes talk about days gone by and how much growth and change there has been since then.

An exciting development in Cheboygan is the construction of a paint booth in one of our buildings. This is a welcome addition and will allow us to complete large and small paint jobs in a cleaner, more efficient manner. We’re pleased that the booth is already booked out and are looking to sustain that with long-term paint jobs in the future.

Although the way we do things has changed vastly since I began working here twenty-three years ago, at the core, we are still the full-service marina we have always been. We are a team of individuals, working together to deliver you the best possible service to maximize your boating time. We always welcome new faces to our Walstrom Marine family and encourage all to visit us anytime to see what’s new and to feel at home in the familiarity of our long-standing commitment to your boating needs.

Walstrom Marine Acquires ALGONAC HARBOUR CLUB

Walstrom Marine has acquired Algonac Harbour Club (AHC), a family-owned full-service marina located on the St. Clair River between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair. Algonac Harbour Club was founded in 1985 by Peter Beauregard, Sr., who retained ownership until this acquisition. Features of AHC include deep-water wells as well as being home to the original Chris-Craft factory, established in the early 1900s.

Beauregard, Sr. will serve as a consultant to ensure a smooth transition and continuity, while the Algonac Harbour Club will now be led by Tom Ervin, President of Walstrom Marine, with Algonac Harbour Club general manager Greg Macuga continuing to run day-to-day operations. Pete Beauregard, Jr. will also retain an ownership position in the Algonac Harbour Club. Algonac Harbour Club employees will continue to serve their loyal customers with the exceptional service, hospitality,

and friendliness they have offered for nearly 40 years. The Algonac Harbour Club will continue to operate under its Algonac Harbor Club brand name.

“I’m incredibly proud of our business, our history, and our legacy as a full-service marina operation that built a loyal customer base through the care and attention we provide to all aspects of our customers’ boating experience,” remarked Beauregard, Sr. “Our succession plan was focused on finding a partner who would continue our legacy and carry out our values. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Walstrom Marine and its ownership group carry on our family business, serve our customers, and care for our employees.”

The acquisition follows the investment in Walstrom Marine in 2021 by an investor group led by Continuum Ventures, the family office of Doug and Maria DeVos. The investor group also included the Pete Beauregard family, the Jim Mestdagh family, as well as the Ward Walstrom Family. This same investor group will now own Algonac Harbour Club. Both the Walstrom Marine and Harbour Club investments further Continuum’s efforts to build the leading premium boat dealer and marina operator in the Great Lakes region, starting with Michigan.

Walstrom Marine, founded in 1946, offers a full-service boating experience in Northern

Michigan with locations in Harbor Springs, Traverse City, Bay Harbor, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan and proudly represents some of the finest boat brands – Sea Ray, Tiara Yachts, Chris-Craft, Nauticstar, Crest, Lund, and Pursuit Boats. The acquisition of Algonac Harbour Club intentionally expands into Southeast Michigan, representing Continuum Ventures’ continued investment and interest in the market.

“We are honored that the Algonac Harbour Club and the Beauregard family found value in the relationship with our family and Walstrom Marine,” remarked Doug DeVos, co-founder of Continuum Ventures. “Our families share a love and passion for the Great Lakes, boating, and the marine industry, and we see the Algonac Harbour Club as a strategic complement to the Walstrom business alongside our pursuit of growth through partnership and acquisition in the industry.”

“Algonac Harbour Club is an exceptional marina operator with amenities and services that appeal to an engaged and loyal customer base,” remarked President of Walstrom Marine, Tom Ervin. “We look forward to working closely with the team and, through Walstrom and now the Algonac Harbour Club, offering an unprecedented community and customer experience.”

ALGONAC HARBOUR CLUB IS STEEPED IN MICHIGAN BOATING HISTORY. 100 years ago, in 1922, the Saint Clair River site was known as Chris Smith & Sons Boat Co., later Chris-Craft, and the site of the Chris-Craft boat production line. That year they produced 24 boats, ramping up production to 946 boats by 1929 and delivering to 30 countries around the world. Chris-Craft was also the second largest manufacturer of landing craft for the United States Navy and Army during WWII, totaling 12,000 military vessels built by 1945. Chris-Craft covered 114,517 square feet of floor space (2.86 acres), had 26 sheds, warehouses, manufacturing buildings, and offices.

THE FIRST FRANCHISE DEALERSHIP, E.J. MERTAUGH BOAT WORKS IN HESSEL, MICHIGAN, SIGNED ON IN 1928. Thirty years later Pete Beauregard opened Algonac’s first franchise location in 1958 with his founding of Colony Marine. Chris-Craft built their last mahogany hull in 1971 and stopped all production at the Algonac facility in 1972 where the property remained vacant for years.

PETE’S PASSION FOR BOATING AND HIS LOVE FOR THE CHRIS-CRAFT HERITAGE HELD STRONG, AND IN 1984 THE BEAUREGARD FAMILY, WITH PARTNERS SAM CATTONE AND JOHN AND JOE CARLO, PURCHASED THE SITE OF THE ORIGINAL PLANT IN ALGONAC. With great vision and passion for the industry, they broke ground on October 26, 1985 and opened the doors of Algonac Harbour Club 8 months later. Some of the original buildings remain standing and were converted for storage use at the reimagined site. Added as amenities were a pool, hot tub, kiddie pool, playground, basketball court, tennis courts (now pickleball), and volleyball courts (now bocce ball).

ALGONAC HARBOUR CLUB IS SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN’S LARGEST, MOST LUXURIOUS DEEPWATER BOATING COMMUNITY. Boasting access to the Great Lakes, the marina today has 318 seasonal slips, transient slips, a restaurant, and various gathering places for everyone to enjoy. It has become a popular destination for our Canadian neighbors, Yoopers, and even our friends down in Ohio. The marina is family friendly and always abuzz, whether it’s a live band in the summer or our famous Labor Day event, there’s sure to be something for the whole family.

MUCH OF THE HISTORY CAN STILL BE SEEN HANGING ON THE WALLS, FLOATING IN THE WATER, OR SEEN FROM AFAR AS THE ORIGINAL WATER TOWER REMAINS STANDING TODAY. This summer we celebrated Chris-Craft’s 100-year anniversary at our annual Antique & Classic Boat Show. We are thrilled to continue building the legacy that Pete resurrected in 1985 with Walstrom Marine and look forward to our bright future together. The possibilities are endless.

Barton & Gray Mariners Club has revolutionized yachting with a fleet of meticulously maintained 36’-62’ Hinckley, Daychaser, and sailing catamaran yachts serving a private membership in harbors along the East Coast and Great Lakes.

B&G captains operate day and evening trips and are back in their home port each night, enjoying a lifestyle unique in the industry.

NEW Paint Shop Capabilities

Painted hullsides are becoming the norm for most manufacturers as a long lasting and repairable alternative to colored gel coat. Some of the major brands we sell and service are painted during manufacturing using DuPont Axalta, including Tiara and Chris Craft. Walstrom Marine has been painting customer boats for many years and we now have the ability to paint and repair DuPont Axalta at our Harbor Springs yard. Our onsite mixing station in Harbor Springs along with the computer software is designed to match any color using a color match camera. Would you like the color of your boat to match your new car? We can do that!

With a broad range of Axalta clear coat options in house we can refinish wood trim and cold molded boats to have a hard finish that lasts longer than varnish and is more durable. The clear coat finish is completely clear and can be buffed to a mirror finish just like your car.

Vinyl repair and painting, which is a restoration alternative to old discolored cushions, is an additional benefit to using the Axalta line. Older boat cushions oftentimes develop a pink staining which is the result of mold growth due to moisture. Painting the cushions with vinyl paint can be an economical alternative to recovering the cushions completely.

In addition to Axalta, our Cheboygan yard has the ability to paint and repair Awlgrip. Paint technicians at both locations attend annual trainings for both DuPont and Awlgrip application and repair. With the addition of new equipment including a state of the art booth, spray guns, compressed air systems, and exhaust systems, both of these locations now have the ability to do complete paint projects and repairs in a safe and nearly dust-free environment.

Who is the American Magic sailing team, and

THEY SAILING’S NEXT BIG THING?

Inside American Magic, all eyes are focused on the journey ahead. The team mindset is about learning together and doing what needs doing. A lot has changed since the previous America’s Cup in January 2021 — a transformation of ambition and outlook, with more experienced leaders newly appointed in substantive roles and a profound sense of unity beyond that.

The overarching mission is not only to win the America’s Cup but also to expand, enhance and enrich the world of sailing. By collaborating with sailing organizations across America, American Magic is looking to engage with the public to strengthen the participation, vitality, and enjoyment of sailing.

New York Yacht Club American Magic’s returning team principals, Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth are at the head of the team and have taken on arguably the most difficult challenge in modern sport, winning the America's Cup. This pair of passionate yachtsmen share a vision for the team as an enduring competitor in the America's Cup arena. They are committed to investing in the technology, design, innovation, and talent necessary to build a winning franchise that will carry on for at least two America's Cup cycles.

"You can't just do this for one cycle; there's so much to learn, you'll lose all the experience and knowledge built

up. But, on the other hand, the lessons learned from the 36th America’s Cup give American Magic another opportunity for success. Our ability to learn, develop and move forward is critical," said DeVos.

"So, for American Magic, we are building a sports franchise. We’re letting everybody know we will be here for this and the cycle after. We're going to build a team. We’re going to bring more people in so we can continue to expand the sport. We're going to be very focused on the America's Cup, but we want to engage in the broader sailing community too."

The America's Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport, the pinnacle of yacht racing, attracting the world’s best

sailors. High levels of skill and expertise are required to race each generation of highly advanced and radically designed yachts to their limits.

Every four years, teams compete for sailing’s holy grail in yachts representing the latest cutting-edge design and technology. The current defender is Team New Zealand, and the next 37th edition of the America's Cup will take place in Barcelona, Spain, in September and October 2024.

the history of any sport. From its inception all the way through to 1983, this 132-year reign saw the New York Yacht Club defend the trophy 24 times.

The America's Cup is a winner-takesall race in which, as Queen Victoria was informed during the first contest, "There is no second." That phrase is still the best description of the America's Cup and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence.

head-turning yachts representing the latest design and technology thinking. The current AC75 foiling monohulls are returning for the 37th and 38th America’s Cup. However, this generation of AC75s are lighter and carry three fewer crew— eight, down from 11—resulting in faster acceleration and higher top-end speeds in the region of 53 knots.

However, it appears this could make a return for this edition.

Between now and October 2024, DeVos, Fauth, and their leadership team will rebuild and lead American Magic’s challenge, an effort underpinned by an unrivaled work ethic and steely determination.

So the burning question for this new American Magic is: can the team bring the America’s Cup back home? Continued from previous page

Throughout its history, the America's Cup has captivated some of the world's most ambitious and successful business people, such as Larry Ellison, tea merchant Sir Thomas Lipton, aviation pioneer Sir T.O.M. Sopwith, the Aga Khan, media mogul Ted Turner, Harold S. Vanderbilt and now Doug DeVos and Hap Fauth.

NYYC American Magic returned to Pensacola, Florida, in September 2022 to rebuild Patriot in preparation for the new America’s Cup rules before sailing all winter and relocating to Barcelona in the middle of 2023 for a final push into the 37th America’s Cup. The winter of 22/23 will mark the team’s third winter training on Pensacola Bay, where the consistent wind and relatively flat sea state make it an ideal training venue for foiling monohulls.

In addition to American Magic, four other teams have officially entered, the defenders, Emirates Team New Zealand, and three challengers: INEOS Britannia [GBR], Alinghi Red Bull Racing [SUI], and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli [ITA].

TO FINANCE or NOT TO FINANCE, that is the question

You have the money. You want the boat. Here is why you should finance instead of paying cash. Make your money work FOR you.

When deciding between financing or paying cash, there can be conflicting viewpoints on best practice. Let’s talk about keeping your cash in your pocket and what that can do for you. When financing a boat, you can hold onto your funds longer and keep cash in your pocket that would otherwise be lost. Investments that

have earning potential and interest that accrues over time can earn you more money than what you are paying on interest for your boat loan. Don’t let high interest rates keep you from seeing the bigger picture. When you take a step back and think about how much can change in a few years to even a few short months, it makes sense to keep your funds in your pocket.

Even if you are not looking to invest those funds, consider that most boat loans are between 10–20-year terms and over 10-20 years a lot can change. You may want that extra cash on hand if other opportunities arise. Make your money work for you, have cashflow for money-making opportunities, and enjoy life on the water in your new boat through financing… what’s not to love?!

Let’s face it: there are many aspects of life which, unfortunately, are out of your control. Surprise circumstances cost money. Even when you plan and prepare for the future, things can still

go sideways. Financing keeps your funds available to you and Walstrom Marine has streamlined the process to make it quick and painless.

When you finance through Walstrom Marine, we take away the headache of making sure you have all your t’s crossed and i’s dotted. We guide you through the process, complete all applicable forms and paperwork on your behalf, and work with your schedule and location to set up a time for the closing. Once you are financed, if something unexpected does come along, you won’t have to sell your boat as you now have a manageable monthly payment. When it’s time to upgrade your boat, Walstrom Marine walks you through the process of how we will help with the payoff and get a clean title for the new buyer. The whole process is easy with Walstrom Marine. Make your money work for you and we’ll do the rest.

BOATS that BUILT US

I grew up in Algonac, Michigan on the water and my love for boats started when my parents purchased a 17' Boston Whaler for my brother and me to run the St. Clair river and the numerous bays in the area. It was fantastic! Many hours and miles were put on that boat and it proved to be one of the most significant purchases my parents had made. Our family also owned a 32' hard top Lyman that served as a source of absolute delight for our family and many of my teenage friends.

My career started as a forklift operator at a local rack storage facility. I was attending college and working at the marina part time. I quickly realized that I was hooked on heavy equipment and boats.

My first job at a real boat yard was at Sassy Marina in Algonac. There, over a twenty-year period, I honed my skills and was able to learn an enormous amount about boats big and small, power and sail. The people I met and was privileged to work with during that time period were incredible. I had an opportunity to crew on the marina’s 78' maxi racing sailboat, as well as maintain her. It was pretty impressive to rig the boat when we were dealing with a 100’ high mast and a 30,000 pound keel.

My true passion for boats and the boating community as a whole was building

during this time. I worked hard and played hard. My wife and I spent nearly every day on the boat after work. We would simply cruise the river or run to our favorite place, Fisher Bay, to drop a hook, swim, and watch one fantastic sunset after another. We were truly blessed. During this time we lived on Harsens Island and my daily means to work was our 1958 22' Chris-Craft Sea Skiff. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. We probably owned at least six boats during this time. I would pick boats up and refurbish them and turn them over for the next project. Thank goodness for my patient wife.

In 2018, my wife and I decided to move north to be closer to my elderly

mother. We sold everything and took the chance and with hard work, sacrifice, and determination, I find myself as the service manager in Cheboygan. I am still overwhelmed by the quality of people who make Walstrom Marine successful and great. I am grateful for the opportunities Walstrom has provided, which include obtaining my captain’s license again. I feel the crew here in Cheboygan is my extended family and they share the same values of pursuing excellence as I do. Next time you are cruising the area, please stop in and say hello! We look forward to seeing you and serving your boating needs.

Service

I got my start at Walstrom Marine in High School as a parts gopher in the summertime. When customers were around and someone needed to go pick something up from Petoskey, that was me. I was never a boater, really. I was born in Petoskey and grew up in Harbor Springs, but when I came to work at Walstrom I took a look at the big boats and thought, “What did I get myself into?” I kept the parts job over the next couple of summers while I got my degree at Ferris State. I have two degrees, both in Automotive, one for body work and one for service management. Fred Walstrom caught wind of what I was doing with my automotive education and cornered me one day in the parking lot out by Service. He put his arm around me and said, “You ever think about working on boats for a living, kid?” I told him “I don’t have a job right now,” and that’s how I got my real start at Walstrom Marine.

Around about 1990 my buddy, who also happens to be my cousin, bought a runabout boat to race in the APBA boat circuit. Two weeks later I went to a race with him. That winter another

buddy of ours and I bought the equipment and gear we needed and started racing. I spent the next 15 years growing my career at Walstrom and racing during the summers before retiring in the early 2000s after winning the ASR (A Stock Runabout) High Point. I walked away cold-turkey. The racing family is such a family atmosphere I knew that if I didn’t walk away completely, I would get drawn back in.

A few years ago, I started going back to races to watch and help my cousin’s son race. As I knew I would be, I was immediately back in the family. I gave up retirement and raced one of Lauer’s boats with my motor attached to it. I guess you could say that my love for

boating isn’t really from boating, but from building and perfecting the equipment that runs my races. What I have learned at my job, and what I have learned racing have influenced each other, and I put just as much meticulous energy into ensuring our customers’ boats are in tip-top condition as I do my own racing equipment.

I now race against many of the children of my ‘90s competitors, who still attend to watch the races. I have no plans for retirement again anytime soon and look forward to many more years of perfecting my racing.

GRAND BAY MARINE

Where it began and where it is now

“I had never been on a boat until I met my husband. We were both in high school, and his sister was my basketball coach. She took all of us kids on her basketball team out to their cottage in Fenton and she was going to teach us all how to water ski. Well, everyone of us city kids not only learned to water ski, but most of us learned to slalom ski.” That was the day that Liz Carney fell in love with boating. From that moment on, she knew she wanted everyone to have that same opportunity and the fun that boating brings.

Boating had become such an important part of her family’s life. Her oldest daughter learned to ski at just four years old and was on the Silver Lake Ski Team. She and her husband boated on Runyan Lake every chance they had. Liz wanted everyone to enjoy the thrill of boating and the peace and tranquility it brought.

Liz graduated from Michigan State University in 1983 with an accounting degree. Upon graduation, she was employed in public accounting, and then in the banking industry. Although she enjoyed her time in the corporate world, she was thrilled to have an opportunity with a boat dealer, which would ultimately change the course of her professional life forever. The boating industry is where she spent the next 35 years of her life.

She joined the team at Lake Fenton Marina in 1992 in the small town of Fenton. During her time there, Liz was awarded the prestigious Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year award. She and

her team proudly became one of the top Four Winns dealers in the world. Along with pontoon, fishing boats and other boat brands, Liz was soon recognized as one of the top boat salespeople in Michigan and in the country. She loved her customers and the opportunity to create wonderful new memories for them and their families.

Liz soon dreamed of more and had a yearning to open her own business. She had an opportunity with Four Winns to open her own dealership. The locations offered,

were all in northern Michigan. Although Liz preferred hot weather and sun to cold and snow, she decided to open her first store in Traverse City, Michigan.

In June of 1997 with only $20,000, Grand Bay Marine was started in Traverse City, Michigan, still a hidden gem at the time. With just three employees, one boat line and a rented, small facility on US-31, Grand Bay Marine was started.

Liz and her family started commuting twice a week from Fenton, living in the Days Inn Hotel in Traverse City. It was an exciting time for Liz, but with a growing family of five children, she and Kevin definitely had their hands full. But it was a family affair, and her kids dove right in to help. They did whatever needed to be done that first summer, and many after. The remainder of the year, Liz and her husband would commute to Grand Bay Marine.

“I had never intended to move my family up here, but the business grew so fast. Kevin left his public accounting career to manage the financial side of the business. Our friends and family traveled miles to help us as well. The support we received from everyone was unbelievable. Our friends and family continue to help us at boat shows and during busy times of the year. Whatever it took, our family and friends were there to help us and our growing team succeed.”

Liz and Kevin initially rented their first facility, but as the business grew, they purchased their first service site, and then a few years later, they purchased their main facility, which is where Grand Bay Marine of Traverse City resides. A few years later, they were fortunate enough to begin a location in Charlevoix, expanding their sales and service efforts. Their team in Charlevoix

brought more talent to their already fabulous team, and they helped developed Grand Bay Marine’s market share in another beautiful area.

Besides getting to work in a stunning area, the Carneys soon learned that boating in northern Michigan was second to none. Although they loved their inland lake boating days in Fenton, their new found recreation of boating on the bay and on Lake Charlevoix became their true love.

In 2001, Regal became a part of Grand Bay Marine. The West Michigan territory for Regal boats was available as well, and in 2006, Grand Bay Marine opened a location in Grand Rapids. After the onset of a recession, they switched gears and focused on mobile service and boat shows in West Michigan. With Regal’s advancement of a luxury product line, their outstanding performance and new innovations, Grand Bay Marine continued to grow.

Expanding further north into Charlevoix, renting two different facilities, and continuing to cultivate in Traverse City, Grand Bay Marine became the #1 Regal Dealer in the world. In 2012, Grand Bay Marine broke ground on property in Charlevoix, expanding sales, service and accessories.

Grand Bay Marine flourished through the local community, participating in events like the National Cherry Festival, The Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools System, Elk Rapids Harbor Days, Charlevoix Apple Fest and Venetian Festival in Charlevoix. They took on many boat shows in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Gaylord, and Bay Harbor and hosted a multitude of family fun events.

They continued to welcome customers from all over the states, training new boaters and helping current boaters explore new models for their families to enjoy.

With increasing customers and boat lines, there was a need to expand to serve the boating community. In 2018, the business increased their showroom size to 21,000 square feet allowing for 25 boats inside year-round. Previously, it could only fit three boats inside. This became the largest showroom in Northern Michigan, allowing them to host their own boat shows and customer events, as well as being able to expand their services for their cherished customers.

Grand Bay Marine brings a family atmosphere to their customers that feels like no other. From in-store events to rendezvous and cocktail parties the customers joined a bigger boating family, the Grand Bay Marine Family!

Liz and Kevin’s outstanding team have evolved into their extended family. They have loved being a part of their employees’ lives, and their employees’ children’s lives. “Family first” has always been their motto. Grand Bay Marine now has secondgeneration employees which makes Liz proud. “It’s such a blessing to see our team’s kids here working alongside of their parents. Their parents are proud as are we.” Their beginning team of three has now expanded to over 50 people, and includes Liz’s daughter Rachael and her niece Cedes.

Liz and Kevin eventually moved to Traverse City with their five children. Although the move initially created anxiety as the kids were happy in their downstate environment, they are all now thrilled that they made the move. Three of their five children (and their families) reside in Traverse City and are active boaters, as well as being super active in the community. The other two children are always thrilled to come home as often as possible. Traverse City is home to the entire Carney clan, and their most favorite times together are spent on the water.

Faith has been the most important part of Liz’s journey and with her business. There were so many concerning and troubling times. But the good Lord always came through with so many blessings. “He continues to lead us and bless us. We are so thankful to be stewards in this amazing business.”

Liz’s mission has been to ALWAYS help everyone get on the water, so they can enjoy what Liz enjoyed on her first boat ride so many years ago. Whether the customer needs a spark plug or a new boat, she has prided herself on giving them the very best experience ever, knowing that their time on the water is about the best thing ever!

Liz and Kevin are grateful for the opportunity to serve the boating needs of so many people. They are grateful to their team today, and all of those who helped along the way. “We never really stopped to look back. But here we are. God has opened

another door for us, and we are thrilled to walk through it.”

In 2022, Grand Bay Marine was acquired by Walstrom Marine and Continuum Ventures as part of the long-term succession plan of the dealership. Continuum Ventures is owned by Doug and Maria DeVos and currently is the majority owner of Walstrom Marine, Inc. “This brings a multitude of opportunities to our customers and our employees and we are very excited! We are so grateful for this wonderful opportunity!” -President of Grand Bay Marine, Liz Carney

As most day cruising boats should, all Chris-Crafts have the ability to be put on a trailer when transportation is required. Whether that is transportation from the ChrisCraft factory to the boat’s new home where it will stay in the water for the foreseeable future, or an owner who needs a trailer and launch ramp each time it sees the water, all Chris-Crafts can be manageably hauled on land from point A to point B.

TRAILERABLE Chris-Craft

For Chris-Craft owners who may not live on the water and want to self-launch their boats on their own time, we offer a variety of products and features that make this sometimes-arduous task very convenient. Five of the 12 models in our offering have a beam of 8'6" or below, making trailering possible without any special permits. These models include:

The Launch 27: 8ˈ6 Beam/5,580 lbs.

The Launch 25 GT: 8ˈ5 Beam/6,260 lbs.

The Launch 28 GT: 8ˈ6 Beam/7,800 lbs.

The Calypso 24: 8ˈ6 Beam/5,905 lbs.

The Catalina 24: 8ˈ5 Beam/5,905 lbs.

As long as one’s trailer is rated for the proper weight of each of these boats, and the

towing capacity of the vehicle used is strong enough, the typical boat owner would be able to transport any of these with ease, and no permitting required. A key feature that sets Chris-Craft apart from the competition is the versatile tops. Exclusive to the Launch GT series, our customers have the ability to choose between multiple tops to best suit their boating needs. Choose between no top, a bimini, a folding sport top or a stationary painted hard top on this model line.

The greatest advantage when it comes to trailering is the folding sport top, which is available exclusively on the Launch 25 GT and Launch 28 GT. Not only does the folding sport top serve as great sun protection while out on the water, but customers can also lower it with the touch of a button to pass under a low bridge, or to lower the profile of the boat when on a trailer. It is much

easier to haul a boat lower to the ground to maximize aerodynamics, as well as avoid any unwanted low branches, trees, or otherwise while on the roads. Some of our customers even keep their Launch GTs in personal garages, so when the folding sport top is in its “down” position, the boat itself takes up far less space.

The folding sport arch was first introduced in 2017 with the release of the Launch GT line but was recently modified and enhanced to be automatic, and redesigned to mimic the look of the always-popular painted hard top. This feature continues to be a customer favorite, and a differentiator in the day cruising market.

In the segment of models with a beam of 8’6” and above, Chris-Craft offers 7 models across 3 model lines. Each of these models do require special permitting / specialized vehicles to get to their destinations. Some of these also feature a cabin that can be utilized for overnight and weekend excursions, which is denoted by *. These models include:

The Launch 31 GT: 10ˈ Beam/11,300 lbs.

*The Launch 35 GT: 10ˈ10 Beam/12,900 lbs.

The Calypso 27: 9ˈ1 Beam/8,428 lbs.

The Calypso 30: 10ˈ2 Beam/8,700 lbs.

*The Calypso 35: 11 Beam/14,770 lbs.

*The Catalina 30: 10ˈ2 Beam/8,700 lbs.

*The Catalina 34: 10ˈ10 Beam/12,500 lbs.

Hauling these models across the roads will certainly require some extra effort and preparation, however, it is a plus that some of these do offer the ability to stay overnight to get the most out of this effort.

The Tiara Yachts EX 60 INFINITE POSSIBILITIES. INSPIRED LUXURY.

“This is really uncharted in some ways, for this particular design, as we blend proven elements from our outboard product line and take portions we’ve learned from our inboard models,” said Tom Slikkers, CEO and President of Tiara Yachts. “The EX 60 honors the tradition Tiara is known for while building on our experience and expertise of our craftspeople.”

Salon with Bulkhead and Door Open

Set to debut publicly at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show in February, the Tiara Yachts EX 60 will be the flagship model in the Tiara lineup, the largest ever made by the builder. A blend of the successful LS series models alongside the tradition and heritage of the inboardpowered Coupes, the EX 60 maximizes the day boat experience with the comfort and

luxuries of live aboard accommodations.

“When designing the EX 60 we couldn’t leave things off the table; it really got our team re-engaged into what a product needs as far as live aboard accommodations go. It had to have ample storage, quality accommodations and blue-water capabilities. This project has made us think hard about what it means to design a yacht,”

noted Gabe Rose, Principal Designer.

A true reflection of each owner and their unique boating lifestyle, the 60 offers customer flexibility alongside elevated luxury. Four unique mid and aft cockpit configurations focused on cruising, entertaining or enjoying your favorite water sports provide a cockpit layout entirely and exclusively of your selection. The salon and galley integrate seamlessly to the cockpit via the electrically actuated disappearing bulkhead, maximizing social function and open-air entertainment. Forward, the easily accessible bow provides yet another exterior relaxation zone. Below deck, three peaceful sleeping accommodations for six adults and two private heads provide space

and comfort for all onboard.

In addition to selecting Ultraleather® and solid surface accents, every EX 60 customer will work together with Tiara Yachts’ premier Interior Yacht Designer who will assist in hand-selecting fabrics for your pillows and bedding, further making your EX 60 uniquely you. Various social zones, a robust galley, well-integrated Fusion® sound system and dual terraces are highlights of the entertainment options onboard.

In a longstanding partnership with Volvo Penta, the EX 60 offers Twin Volvo® IPS3 1350s alongside the latest Volvo® and Garmin® technology. With Volvo’s

Interceptor Trim System standard, you’ll enjoy a smoother ride while it anticipates and calculates roll, lean, and pitch, adjusting the boat for the most comfortable ride possible. Peace, tranquility and adventure are effortless with the reinvigorated Tiara spirit and quiet Bluewater Performance that allows you to venture farther and explore for the day, weekend, or week.

Further cementing Tiara Yachts’

leadership in the industry of large boat builders in the United States, the EX 60 promises to offer the next level of personalized luxury and endless exploration. “We’ve worked to accommodate the cruising proficiency and mix that with day boating, raising the bar about who we are and what we do all at the same time,” said Tom Slikkers.

An Interview with Regal Boats’ Duane Kuck

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT REGAL’S HISTORY AND YOUR TIME WITH THEM.

Regal was founded in 1969 by Paul and Carol Kuck (Mom and Dad). They had a dream for a new company that would produce high quality boats and provide an awesome boating experience for families all over the world. Paul and Carol believed that relationships were most important. That’s still true today.

I started working at Regal from the very beginning, while still in high school. I remember sitting around the kitchen table when Mom and Dad were discussing what they would name their new company. I have been fortunate to work in almost every area of the company over the years. The experience I was able to gain has been invaluable as my responsibility increased. It’s hard to believe that I have been with the company for almost 52 years. And it has been my true pleasure to serve as Regal‘s president and CEO for the last 25 years.

WHERE ARE YOUR BOATS BUILT?

We proudly build all Regal boats in Orlando, Florida, with a dedicated team of over 850 people and over 450,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Thanks to our dedicated upholstery, wiring harness and woodshop teams, we have significant vertical integration within Regal.

WHAT SETS REGAL APART FROM YOUR COMPETITION?

There is an incredible amount of competition in our industry, I was recently at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and was amazed by the amount of boat options available for customers to choose from.

The number one thing we hear from our customers as to why they choose Regal is because of the functionality of our product. We are a company of boaters that builds boats for boaters. We care deeply about the experience of our customers and work hard to ensure that every part of our design enhances a customer’s time on the water. The most significant thing we do on every model is to determine the layout. This is fundamental to every boat and we believe

our layouts are what sets us apart from the competition. From ergonomic seating, functional galleys and wet bars, to full-size beds, we consider every part of the design and how it will impact the customers’ experience.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE REGAL WORLD?

This is truly an exciting time for Regal with so much going on in many different areas of the company. From new model introductions to plant expansions, almost every department at Regal would have an exciting project to talk about.

However, what I am most excited about is our newly-launched leadership development courses to invest in the current and future leaders of Regal. We believe that a strong Regal starts with a strong leadership team, and we have been making investments to grow the capability of our leaders at every level. My brother always says, “We are in the people business, and we happen to build great boats,” and I could not be more proud of what we are doing to invest in our people.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MODEL AND WHY?

For me, this one is easy. It’s our flagship, the Regal 42 Fly. My wife Cindy and I have had the pleasure of boating on a 42 Fly for three of the past four summers and it truly is the perfect boat for us. The two stateroom layout provides us the perfect on-water condo. While most of our nights are spent on the boat, just the two of us, we love having enough room to invite one of our (five) kids to come and see us.

The upper salon is perfect for entertaining friends at the dock or watching our favorite team play on Saturday. (GO GATORS!)

When underway, you will find us on the flybridge. Three hundred and sixty degree views and fresh air is what boating is all about.

WHAT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FOR REGAL?

Like many manufacturing companies, over the past two and a half years we have had significant challenges with our supply chain. We build 25 different models and utilize over 100,000 unique parts. Keeping the right parts on hand was a challenge in the best of times, but the disruption caused by shutdowns and logistic breakdowns created a significantly more challenging environment than at any other time in Regal’s 53 year old history. Thanks to the incredible effort and dexterity of the Regal team, we have been able to overcome these challenges and still achieve all-time-high production. While we continue to struggle in this area, we believe the worst of the limitations are over and are confident that the process improvements these constraints forced us to make have made us a stronger company.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO BOAT?

I have had the privilege to boat in many special places over the years, but for me there are two personal favorites.

First is the Bahamas, where I have been going to the Abacos since my teenage years. However, the waters took on more of a special meaning when I met my wife Cindy. Her father was born on one of the out islands, Man-O-War Cay, and we have had the privilege of raising our family with a love for their Bahamian heritage, and a deep appreciation for the perfect blue

Bahamian waters. From a 21’ bowrider to our now 38 SAV, our time boating in the Abacos holds many of our family’s best memories.

More recently, Cindy and I have fallen in love with Northern Michigan. We spent the past two summers using a 42 Fly cruising the gorgeous waters of Northern Michigan. Charlevoix has been a standout favorite for us. Of course we love the weather, and the walleye at Terry’s is pretty hard to beat. But what we love most is all of the genuine people we have met along the way. From warm smiles and a wave from the new friends we have made at the marina, the Midwest hospitality is what makes our time there so special. We are proud to say that for the third summer in a row we will once again be boating in Northern Michigan. Our brand new 42 Fly will begin construction in January.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST IN THE FUTURE OF BOATING?

There is no doubt there are exciting new innovations and technology coming to the boating industry, but what excites

me most is the new generation of boaters experiencing the lifestyle for the first time over the past couple of years.

For me, boating has always been about relationships and enjoying God’s beautiful creation. There is something about boating and being on the water that enriches your life in a way that is hard to explain. Fellow boaters know exactly what I am talking about.

We know that as the world was dealing with COVID, more people than ever turned to boating as an escape. We also know that many of those who started boating for the first time will continue with the sport for the rest of their lives. Furthermore, we know that if you grow up boating, you are significantly more likely to continue boating as you grow older. It is this that excites me most. Current and future generations, spending time on the water, enriching their relationships and enjoying some of God’s most beautiful creations.

Whether on the water on your first boat or a Regal 42 Fly, there is no better way to create lasting memories with those you love.

GREAT LAKES BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL

Building n its History

Nestled in Cedarville, Michigan among the thirty-six Les Cheneaux Islands of the Upper Peninsula, is a marine trades institution - the brainchild of some forward-thinking residents respectful of the storied heritage of wooden boat building in the area. The progress and future plans for Great Lakes Boat Building School is exceeding their optimistic expectations.

The school was established in 2006 and until the fall of 2020, solely offered a program in traditional wooden boat building that prepared students for careers in wooden boat building, restoration, and service settings. There is no better mecca for wooden boat building, and testing the vessels, than the Les Cheneaux Islands.

An engaged and energetic Board of Directors and Program Advisory Board (PAB) lead and guide the direction of the private, non-profit marine trades school. The Board is composed of philanthropicminded business leaders that either live year-round or summer in the area.

The GLBBS mission is to prepare students for rewarding careers in the marine industry with the vision to be the marine workforce development leader in the Great Lakes region. School leadership relies on the PAB, made up of marine industry professionals and educators, to provide input, feedback, new ideas for programming, and advice.

It was PAB member David Lesh, Director of Service at Walstrom Marine, that carried the torch to develop the 12-month certificate program in Marine Service Technology. In partnership with Mercury Marine, this program is designed to prepare individuals who are well-rounded, entrylevel marine technicians who can work at marinas, boatyards, marine manufacturers, yacht clubs, and outstanding marine dealerships like Walstrom Marine.

“Walstrom Marine takes pride in being a top quality source in solving maintenance and repair needs for customers with our certified technicians,” said Tom Ervin,

LAKES BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL
Great Lakes Boat Building School

President, Walstrom Marine. “We have three GLBBS graduates on our talented team that are making an immediate, positive impact in our operations. The plans at GLBBS to expand their facility, essentially doubling their ability to prepare students for the marine industry, is great news for us and other marine employers.”

The expansion plans are bold, much like those of the school’s founders when they envisioned a 12,000 square foot facility to incubate the skills and craft of wooden boat building. Both GLBBS programs are addressing a critical need in the marine industry today; a dire qualified workforce shortage. Currently, the school has an annual capacity of 24 students and over the previous six years, 100% career placement of its graduates. The industry is demanding more.

This industry demand was the impetus behind the “Come Aboard, Launch Careers” capital campaign to fund a 10,000 square foot marine skilled trades training facility with contemporary equipment and technology to train more qualified service technicians. This space will also be the home to the first Marine Electronics Technology program in the country, addressing another emerging need in the marine industry.

Marine industry leaders like Walstrom Marine and Tiara Yachts have both responded in support of GLBBS.

“During a recent visit, I recognized the important role GLBBS plays in supporting the marine industry and the equally important role leaders in the industry have in ensuring the future of these schools. Tiara Yachts has invested in both the capital campaign to expand the physical size of the school

and in two sponsorships for students going forward,” said Tom Slikkers, CEO and President, Tiara Yachts. “I’m certain that Tiara Yachts can make a positive impact upon the school, but just imagine the impact our industry could make if we invested in this school and others like it, together. Whether we invest via funds, time, or mentorship, I believe supporting this program and others like it is how we right the ship when it comes to our need for skilled people in our field.”

“We are honored and humbled that Walstrom Marine and Tiara Yachts

supported our capital campaign and are advocates for our school,” said Nikki Storey, GLBBS President. “Growing up in this area I remember the excitement when the school started. Because of their commitment it is mine and our team’s goal to ensure the future is bright.”

GLBBS is building a strong future by building on their history.

GLBBS continues to produce qualified students from their Comprehensive Career Boat Building Program and the Marine Service Technology Program (MST), in partnership with Mercury Marine University, with a consistent 100% placement rate. The School is continuing to address the shortage of skilled trades and craftspeople in the marine industry following graduation. For prospective student enrollment information go to www.admissions@glbbs.org or call 906.484.1081.

Information about the “Come Aboard… Launch Careers” capital campaign is available by contacting Tom Coates, Director of Development at thomas.coates@glbbs.edu or https://glbbs.edu/support/ also by calling 906.484.1081.

One of the most iconic boats in Lund’s history took a break for about a decade, and anglers missed it—so we’re bringing it back. The Lund Fisherman is designed for one thing—to master big water and put fish in the boat. Specifically oriented toward trolling, the layout is ideal for running multiple downriggers out of the deep cockpit. And riding on Lund’s legendary

THE FISHERMAN

An Interview with Lund Product Managers Dan Anonen and Rory Wiebe

IPS hull—now with a deeper deadrise and wider beam—it boasts unparalleled stability, smoothness, and safety.

We interviewed the master boat designers behind the newest iteration of the Fisherman— Lund Product Managers Dan Anonen and Rory Wiebe—to understand the concept behind this impressive fishing machine.

WHY DID YOU BUILD THE FISHERMAN?

It’s built for trolling in big water. Salmon, trout, walleye, in the Great Lakes, the Pacific Northwest, striper in the Midwest and South. The Fisherman is designed specifically to handle the demands of dedicated anglers in big-water fisheries.

HOW HAS CUSTOMER FEEDBACK INFLUENCED THE DESIGN?

Lund listens through its Voice of the Customer program, and implements valid ideas whenever possible. This boat directly reflects the needs of big water anglers. The Lund pro staff and dealers across the continent also have a voice in boat design. How did the former Fisherman influence this boat? It retains the deep cockpit, smooth ride in the chop, and stability— they’re both made for big water trolling plus fishing at anchor.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF LUND’S DOUBLE-RIVETED HULL?

A riveted hull—built right—is incredibly straight for precise tracking in all conditions. Other manufacturing methods can cause warping and lead to cracking. Riveted hulls are also incredibly safe and durable—which

is why airplane wings and bodies are built of riveted aluminum. It’s just the best method of aluminum boat construction.

WHAT UNSEEN ASPECT OF DESIGN OR CONSTRUCTION IS NOTABLE?

The longitudinal hull reinforcement beneath the all-aluminum floor brings fulllength rigidity and long-term durability to the entire structure. Aluminum bulkheads and braces create a rock-solid substructure that provides safety and top performance.

HOW IS THIS BOAT SAFER THAN OTHERS IN BIG, ROUGH WATER?

The cockpit depth—30 inches—makes the boat incredibly safe. It doesn’t just feel safe—it is safe. You’d have to try to fall out.

HOW DOES THE HULL DESIGN AFFECT PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY?

The Fisherman’s IPS hull has a slightly deeper deadrise than the previous version plus a wider beam. This helps it cut through chop more smoothly and sit more stably at rest.

TALK ABOUT THE STORAGE AND SEATING IN THE FISHERMAN.

Rod storage is unmatched in this boat. Three rod lockers let you pack in your biggest trolling or casting setups. In-floor lockers and in-gunnel storage add capacity for tackle and safety gear. And there are four cockpit seat positions and two fold-flat aft jump seats, so you can easily fish a crew of up to six.

The Lund Fisherman will be available in two models—1875 and 2075. Both are uniquely equipped to take on the challenges that big water present, and both are destined to put big fish in the boat for decades to come.

Walstrom Marine SYNONYMOUS WITH TEAM

Walstrom Marine is synonymous with team. I met my first team member, Scott Way (Salesman and now friend), during Apple Fest in Charlevoix in 2020. The next year, I talked to him again while checking out a 2020 Tiara at the same festival. This time he was introducing me to a unique boat and that’s when the team relationship really began. At the end of the night, he agreed to take me for a sea-trial back to Harbor Springs on Sunday morning, which was projecting low temperatures and pouring rain. During the sea-trial we covered everything on the boat and he completely trusted me at the helm the entire time. It was very evident that Scott was not only knowledgeable about this particular boat, but also all the other manufactures and styles. We negotiated and closed the sale with the help

of Dwayne Stone, sales manager. Andrea Lightfoot (business manager) handled all the paperwork and documentation with the USCG. OK, this is just the beginning of the team membership. From here we met Captain Kurt, who delivered the boat to my wife Laura and me. He spent over six hours going through everything again, which I had already forgotten from my seatrial with Scott. In addition, he gave us his

cell number to call anytime if we had any future questions or if we forgot something. I guess Captain Kurt was the transition team member.

Once we got our assigned slip, we met another part of the team. Brandon, the dockmaster, and his key players led by Val and Maggie. They are at the marina ALL THE TIME, watching and helping with everything. Over this past season, we have seen them step up and complete any task that was in front of them, whether it was theirs to do or not. A gold star for those two and their support staff. Nope, still not done. As things arose over the season, we were introduced to the service team. Led by Dave Lesh (director of service) and Nikki Landon (service advisor), whom I challenged a few times with unique tasks along with the expected maintenance tasks. In addition, when it came to winter storage, it too was handled seamlessly even with all the changing of fluids, cleaning and waxing, and overall checking of the entire boat. All were handled in a professional and timely manner. If Mark on the parts team didn’t have what I needed, he tracked it down and ordered it. If I was in a jam and needed the boat cleaned, Peter and Margaret were there to help out in a very detailed manner. Last but not least, there is Cathy Ward on the accounting team. Invoices were all detailed and if I had any questions, she responded in a professional and timely manner.

Hopefully you can now appreciate the Walstrom team that we met over the past year! The Walstrom team is all encompassing in talent and truly a one-stop shop that can handle the entire spectrum at one location. They are all very professional and friendly at every level and we are proud to be associated with them. Thanks for all your help over the past year.

A FAMILY

Upon his retirement following a long and successful career, Kip Horsburgh and his family of passionate boaters looked forward to being able to spend even more quality time together on the water. And so, they all decided it was the perfect time to upgrade their old speedboat with a brand new Pursuit DC 246 Dual Console.

But this isn’t another story about hardcore salts chasing sportfish in the deep sea, trips to the Bahamas, or socializing at the sandbar. Because, while Pursuit Boats are perfectly suited to doing any of those things, Kip’s new Pursuit Boat powers adventures of a different kind.

A CENTURY OF FUN ON THE WATER

Kip Horsburgh hails from a family with a long-held passion for boating. The Horsburgh family has been boating and vacationing in the Les Cheneaux Islands in Cedarville, Michigan for over a century.

Safely stowed in the family’s Les Cheneaux vacation home boat shed you’ll find an older run-about, four kayaks, a small sail boat, and even a wooden launch

on the Great Lakes

dating back to the turn of the 20th century. According to Kip, these smaller boats are pretty normal for that part of town. “This is an area where big boats are not popular,” he explained. “We and the other families in the area are day sailors, not cruisers. We love the joy of small boating.”

IN PURSUIT OF AN UPGRADE

In 2020, the time arrived to upgrade their old family speed boat. Having owned and actively used many boats on the lakes for many decades, Kip and his adult sons, Mark and Brian, had a clear idea of what they wanted out of their next boat.

Their biggest priority was to buy a boat that offered a smoother, more capable ride than their outgoing boat, in the variety of conditions that the lakes can often present.

“The boat we were replacing had served us well for the past 26 years, but its major shortcoming had been its less-than-smooth ride in bigger waves on the open water on Lake Huron,” said Kip. “When the water gets over two and a half feet on the way to Mackinac Island, the boat really starts to pound. It’s teeth-chattering. So you have to go much slower.”

“For those reasons, we wanted a more seaworthy hull that still had an attractive appearance,” he continued. “We also wanted it to offer decent protection from the wind and weather while underway, so we started off with a desire for a really big windshield. And the boat’s interior had to be comfortable for picnics.”

Following some online research on

what the family’s next boat should be, they narrowed it down to boats from Pursuit and two other well-known brands.

At this point, it was in the midst of the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when new boats were especially scarce, but they struck it lucky following a call to Walstrom Marine in Harbor Springs, Michigan. “By sheer coincidence, Walstrom had ordered a Pursuit DC 246 several months earlier that had not been committed to,” Kip noted. “That’s very rare,” added Pursuit’s marketing manager, Megan Morris. “During the pandemic, most boats were sold already before leaving the factory.”

It turns out that it was a match made in boating heaven.

A WORTHY DUAL CONSOLE DECISION

Before signing the check, Kip insisted on having a sea trial. Though it was not ultimately possible to obtain a Pursuit DC 246 for a sea trial, Walstrom Marine did manage to arrange a test of a very similar Pursuit Boat for Kip and his family. “The Pursuit that we tested was a center console that had a similar hull and performance characteristics,” he recalled. “We went out and did a sea trial on a very choppy, rainy day. We had the best experience and following that, we were even more committed to buying a dual-console boat by Pursuit.”

Having now owned and enjoyed their Pursuit DC 246 for a full summer season,

the family is extremely happy with their purchase: “We’ve been highly satisfied by the Pursuit’s seaworthiness and the manner in which it has met all of our expectations and goals,” he noted.

He also reaffirmed his choice of the dual console layout with the larger windshield. “It offers good wind and rain protection and, with vinyl windows attached to the hard top, we love the fact that six people can stand inside the protection of the vinyl windows on a rainy day.”

MEMORIES: DELIVERED

The Horsburgh family took delivery of their 2022 Pursuit 246 DC in the winter of 2021 after which it saw regular use during the summer of 2022. This included open-water lake trips to destinations like Mackinac Island, Canada’s North Channel, and Cheboygan and the Indian river.

Meanwhile, the family enjoyed touring the Islands as well as day-long boating gettogethers with up to eight people, anchored in the sun, enjoying a picnic.

The Pursuit Boats Dual Console series is a stylish, comfortable and innovative range of boats with features to deliver the perfect family experience on the water. With lengths ranging from 24' to 36', the Dual Console series offers a boat for every family’s needs.

We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

Dave and Beth first came to Bay Harbor 11 years ago after falling in love with the area and all it has to offer. Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky the slower pace and scenic views of the water drew them in, leading them to purchase a home overlooking the Bay Harbor Marina.

“We sat and watched boats going in and out. I just knew a lot of people would go out to dinner on their boats. You could see them going back and forth to Harbor Springs, to Petoskey, to Charlevoix, to Beaver Island, and I finally said to Beth, ‘We gotta buy a boat.’” Dave said.

Boating was new for Dave, whose boating experience began and ended on the ski boats of Beth’s family home in Knoxville, Tennessee. He knew they would need something a little larger for the Great Lakes.

“All of our friends up in this area told

me that we would need something 30 feet or more to go out on Lake Michigan. The smaller you are, the more limited you’re going to be as far as using it,” Dave said.

“I set Beth up,” Dave said, laughing.

“He said, ‘Hey, you want to go to Michigan with me?’ It was December and I thought, sure! The next day he said, ‘We’ve got a meeting with Hi today,’” Beth said, also laughing, in regard to the secret meeting with Hi Stover, one of Walstrom Marine’s Bay Harbor salesmen. “I said ‘What?! Hi?!’ and Dave said that he wanted to go look at some boats.”

And as it turned out, the timing was perfect.

“I was completely on board,” Beth said. “When our kids were younger with sports, we weren’t up here a whole lot, and now they’re older and a couple have families of their own. We have more time, so the timing actually made sense.”

“Hi met us over there and we got on the biggest boat first, I think it was a 54' or a 53', I can’t remember. You know, out of the water it looks massive. So we’re sitting up on top of it and I said, ‘Now Hi, where

would the water be?’ We decided to look at the next smaller size, which was a 49'. We got on the 49' and I said, ‘Where’s the water again?’ So next we got on the 39'. I said, ‘We’ll take the 39', this is what we’ll start with,’” Dave said.

After some delays with COVID, the boat arrived May 1, 2022 and was put to immediate use.

“Between May 1st and August we put over 90 hours on our boat,” Dave said.

“On our first boat,” Beth added.

“A lot of it was instead of taking the car to Harbor Springs to shop or have lunch, we took the boat over. Almost every other day,” Dave said.

In addition to becoming their daily driver, both Dave and Beth love to take friends out to dinner, or cocktail hour on the boat. Many a trip across the bay involved anchoring with friends in different areas around Harbor Springs. And their use hadn’t gone unnoticed.

“In late June, early July, Captain Bill, who helped us a lot in getting a feel for the boat, saw Hi who asked how we were doing. Bill said ‘Man, he’s doing really well.’ And then

Hi asked him if he thought we would have any interest in a 49 he had listed for sale. Bill said, ‘I don’t know, but he could handle it!’” Dave said.

“One day, Dave said, ‘I’ll be back in a minute. I’m going to go down and talk to Hi,’” Beth says, “Which he says every day almost. He came back and he said, ‘Hey! I just saw this 49' that they have for sale…’ I looked at him and I said, ‘Okay’.”

Not only were Dave and Beth trading up, the owner of the 49' was as well, and placed an order for the new 60' Tiara. It was fate, and two weeks after taking ownership of their new boat they had 20 hours on the engines.

“We’re on it ALL the time,” Beth said. Their children loved the 39', but have yet to see the 49'.

“They keep asking us when we’re coming home. We keep saying, ‘I don’t know,’” Beth laughed.

I point out that in order to head back south, they would need to dock first. And that was something they just weren’t ready to do quite yet.

The redesign of the Launch was carefully configured by new owner, Winnebago, to create a more family-friendly day boat. The addition of the starboard side walkthrough to the cockpit, a dock level boarding “dive” door, and convertible sunpad with aft-facing lounge, provides extra convenience for the active boating family. The traditional Chris-Craft lines boast tradition and elegance. Paired with the optional hardtop, the Chris-Craft GT Launch series delivers on vintage stylings and first-class, modern amenities. This model is easily trailered and will turn heads at every new destination.

Hi Stover

TIARA EX 60

I’m excited about this newest Tiara!

The new flagship of the Tiara fleet, the Tiara EX 60, will make her public debut in January 2023. Tiara’s largest yacht to date, the EX 60 combines the most exciting design elements of the company’s successful LS outboard and Coupe inboard model lineups. One of the most innovative design features is the option of four different layouts for the cockpit. The three-stateroom design is perfect for any day boating or cruising lifestyle. Powered by the latest Volvo IPS, the EX 60 won’t disappoint!

Joe Gallagher TIARA 43 LE

My favorite Walstrom Marine boat is the Tiara 43 LE. I find this boat to be the perfect Northern Michigan boat because of the spacious cabin and rotating aft seat. Whether you want to spend a few nights aboard, or entertain a group of guests, this boat offers the best of both worlds. Paired with a set of the all-new Mercury 600hp V12 outboards, this boat is easy to maneuver and has enough horsepower to get up and go. My favorite way to spend a summer day is on the water with friends and I can’t imagine a better boat to spend the day on.

Matt Schwarze 2075 FISHERMAN

Congratulations to Lund on their upcoming 75th Anniversary! As part of the celebration, Lund is bringing back the iconic 2075 FISHERMAN.

The FISHERMAN is a perfect boat for our Northern waters. Whether you’re trolling for kings on the big lake or running boards for walleye on Lake Leelanau, the 2075 allows you to do it all. The 2075 offers all the real estate you will need for your gear and friends with a large cockpit, tall freeboards, and wide gunwales. The 2075 Fisherman can help you elevate your fishing in utility, style and comfort.

Sandy Frye

PURSUIT C238

Amazing stability and handling of big water. Capable of fishing the bay or heading out with the family for a day at the sandbar. Currently phasing out production and will be replaced with the Pursuit S248!

Scott Way REGAL 38SAV

This past Spring Break I was honored to spend the week on a Regal 38SAV, which is a very close cousin to the 38LS Tiara. I must say to actually spend days on a boat and use it for the purpose that it was designed is far better than just delivering a boat. The open layout of the boat works well for a small group of people and makes docking easy. It was great to be able to be in or get out of the sun and to use the well-designed cabin. The 38SAV made our vacation amazing and I know you will love it too.

Steve Wolfe 16' LUND SSV

My favorite model for 2023 is the 16' Lund SSV. This is my favorite model because of all the memories that were created while growing up. I learned to fish from this boat with my dad and grandpa. My mom and I also liked to go fishing and while fishing she would look for driftwood that floated up on shore to take home and use to decorate the cabin. I also have two sisters that did not fish much but loved to go out for rides and exploring the bays and islands near our cabin. My whole family enjoyed this boat. This original Lund is no longer in our family, but the memory will live with us forever.

Walstrom Marine values its customers. Fuel discounts are one of our ways of saying thanks!

EMERGENCY Service Anytime

No matter how hard you plan or how much maintenance you perform on your boat in the winter months, there is always the possibility that you will need emergency after hours support. To provide this support and to give our customers peace of mind, we’ve instituted an emergency after-hours call service. By calling our main number after hours, you will be directed to a local call service that will then notify one of our senior personnel of your situation. That Walstrom Marine team member will then call you directly to assess the situation and work to get your issue resolved as quickly as possible. In certain situations, such as life or death or fire, the call service will also ask you to notify the proper authorities by calling 911. Calls made after 10 pm that are non-life threatening will be returned first thing the following morning.

In the summer of 2022, we had a few instances where this service came in handy for our customers. The services were provided between our Harbor Springs and Cheboygan locations. In all instances, our team was able to follow up with a phone call and bring our customer’s vessels in for repairs. Just as we had hoped, we are able to help our customers enjoy our short summers a little more by giving them this piece of mind.

Captain Kurt’s B ATING TIPS

Proper lines and knots are critical to keeping our boats safe in their slip. They are the last thing we touch before our boats glide out on the day’s adventures and the first thing we grab ahold of upon returning. Marlinspike seamanship is a term used broadly to describe one’s proficiency at understanding the uses of various knots. Some basic knowledge of lines and knots can make a day out on the lake safer and more enjoyable.

SO MANY CHOICES

• Dock lines come in various lengths, diameters and material based on their intended use. Double braided nylon is most common for dock lines as it provides a good combination of strength, elasticity, and ease of use in coiling and storing.

• Pick the appropriate diameter line for the size of your boat. The most common diameters are 3/8", ½", 5/8" and ¾". Guides are available on West Marine’s website to help you select which size line you should use.

• Line length is determined by boat length. Figure around 2/3 the length of the boat for bow and stern lines, with spring lines being closer to the length of the boat.

HOW TO TIE UP PROPERLY

• Ideally, use two bow lines, two stern lines, and a spring line (or two) to keep your boat secure in a slip. If tying up to a wall or face dock, use one bow line, one stern line, a spring line leading forward and another spring line leading aft.

• Lines should be snug, with just enough slack that they can be removed from the boat’s cleat. Wind and wave action will naturally loosen and stretch lines. Note: Lines will need slack on fixed docks in coastal areas that are affected by tides.

• Leave lines set at your home slip and carry five or six “travel” lines on board for tying up at restaurants and other marinas. Keep these coiled up neatly on board so you don’t have to waste time untangling when you are ready to dock.

• Lines that have become stiff over the course of the season can be revived in the washing machine with soap and fabric softener.

KNOT BASICS

• If you can only remember how to tie three knots, learn these three: the cleat hitch, clove hitch and bowline. A proper cleat hitch will securely hold a boat to a dock, but will also easily come loose when needed. A clove hitch is used to tie a boat to a piling or post when no dock cleats are available. It is also used to hang fenders from a bow rail. A bowline is a handy way of making a loop at the end of a line. Unlike a simple overhand loop knot, a bowline will come undone easily when it is no longer needed.
