BOARD OF TRUSTEES
FROM THE PRESIDENT What do you think year-round residents do in Birchwood during the winter? I’ll bet a lot of you would answer, “Hibernate!” Some would say, go South! Some others think we spend all of our time shoveling snow. The truth is, we don’t hibernate. We don’t leave and we don’t shovel snow. The latter is done very efficiently for us by the Birchwood crew. Roads are always passable, if not cleared to the pavement. We don’t leave because the white sparkly snow is beautiful. The fresh crisp air is invigorating, unlike humid, hot air. I lived in Kansas City for 20 years. I know humidity! Here is a list of some of the activities that Terry Glissman, 2030 Plan Leader for Activities, has put together for winter activities in and around Birchwood. Thanks, Terry!

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER As I reflect on 2021 and look toward 2022, I want to give a sincere Thank You to our Membership for the support over the last twelve months. We were able to return to some sense of normalcy last season, and hosted all of our big member events and activities, including an in person Annual Membership Meeting in September – the first in almost 18 months! Even though we had to navigate another Covid year, there were many bright spots throughout 2021 that I can’t help but reflect on. 2021 brought over 50 new members to our community! This is an exciting time for Birchwood we have many new families moving into the community, as well as new general, emeritus as Paul Marazzo General Manager and junior members enjoying all that our Club has to offer. The Birchwood Community is seeing new construction of homes and condos for the first time since the financial crisis of 2008. The Architectural Control and Security Committee has approved 10 new single-family homes for construction as well as a 20 – unit condominium development. At the end of 2021, three of the single-family homes have been completed, the remaining seven are progressing nicely, and the condominium development has several foundations poured. We are excited to watch the new construction projects progress to competition within the next few years. The Birchwood Racquets Department experienced a great season, with significantly increased participation in our Pickleball programming. Many thanks go to Chuck Reisig, our newly hired Racquet Sports Director, who successfully led the department through his first season. In July of last summer, we completed the addition of two new pickleball courts to our racquet sports footprint! This brings the total footprint to four dedicated pickleball courts, nine clay tennis courts, and four bocce lanes for member enjoyment. The Club was financially sound throughout the 2021 year, with particular highlights in golf rounds played, Food & Beverage revenue, and debt reduction. Golf rounds for the 2021 season were 15,898 (18-hole equivalents) compared to the budgeted amount of 14,081 and prior YTD rounds of 15,293. Food & Beverage revenue was up roughly $300,000 over budget, and the Birchwood Board of Trustees approved the early payoff of the loan which was taken out in 2015 to remodel the North End and Pool area of the Birchwood campus. We are working to achieve even more financially in 2022.

THE HISTORY OF THE BIRCHWOOD FARM ESTATE he main portion of land to be later known as Birchwood Farm was homesteaded in the middle 1870’s by Cleveland A. Ingalls. In August, 1913, Guy A. Ingalls Jr. sold the farm to Joseph E. Otis, of Chicago banking fame. Otis gave the estate the name Birchwood Farm and therein lies the source of its current name, The Birchwood Farm Estate. Birchwood was turned into a model dairy and produce farm by Otis, and it soon became known for the superiority of its farm products. . . the cream was “extraheavy”. . . the milk “extra-rich”. . . the eggs were the largest in Emmet County. . . the strawberries were so large, it only took 10 to 12 to make up a quart . . . and the pure bred Jersey cows always took first prize every year at the County Fair. After 32 years of ownership, Otis sold Birchwood Farm in 1945 to William W. Garstang of Indianapolis. Garstang started out expanding the farm operations but business reverses forced him to sell off the Birchwood Dairy operations . . . and eventually the farm itself in 1951 to Warren M. Atkinson, also of Indianapolis. Atkinson phased out all produce operations and in 1954, introduced beef cattle to Birchwood Farm. The size of the cattle herd had reached over 100 head when Atkinson sold Birchwood in 1959 to Ernest L. Nicolay of Detroit . . . President of the New Era Potato Chip Company.
8
Nicolay saw Birchwood as a foundation potato seed farm for New Era as well as a recreational resort for customer entertainment and employee recreation. Land used for the first foundation potatoes planted in 1959 included the “Lost 40” acres, named for its limited accessibility, and the same land where the clubhouse stands today for the Birchwood Farm Golf & Country Club. Construction was also started in late 1959 on the single level “L” shaped lodge building, the dining hall building and the swimming pool . . . units that would later become the nucleus of the current Birchwood Farm Inn. In 1962 Mr. J. R. Davis, a former automobile executive from Detroit, purchased Birchwood Farm from the Nicolay family following the untimely death of Ernest Nicolay. Davis created the Birchwood Farm Lodge using the buildings constructed by Nicolay. The single level North wing of the Lodge was added in 1963 and the separate, two-story wing added in 1964. The course of Birchwood took a dramatic new direction when the farm was purchased in 1971 from Davis by Bill E. Cottrill, land developer from the Flint/Grand Blanc area. Mr. Cottrill transformed the property into one of the most desirable residential/ resort communities in the midwest . . . The acres highlighted by a championship golf course and a luxurious 22,000 sq. ft. clubhouse.

New Property Owners
Cynthia Janssens and John Powell
Cynthia Janssens and John Powell moved to Birchwood last spring. They met in 2019. Both had lost long-time spouses and a passion for golf brought them together on an online dating site. COVID cinched the relationship as they as they spent their first summer together isolated at his home in Dearborn. Since then, she sold her home in Boyne City and he sold his downstate. Determined to settle “Up North,” they are delighted to be in Birchwood. Cindy is a longtime newspaper journalist who worked all over the country and retired from the Detroit News where she was travel editor and Sunday magazine editor. John retired from Michigan State University where he taught undergraduate and graduate classes in athletic training and research design. During his career he served as a consultant for the National Football League, the National Hockey League, the Big Ten Conference, and the US Navy injury surveillance programs. SECURITY & EMS I hope this letter finds everyone staying warm and enjoying all that the winter season has to offer us in Northern Michigan. As it is our utmost responsibility to keep our membership safe, I am sending out a reminder about a couple of safety concerns and general policy reminders that have been brought to my attention recently. While many of you have left for the winter, we are doing our part to keep Birchwood safe throughout the winter months, including our house inspections for those who have signed up this year. As a reminder, to keep our officers safe, please make sure to keep your driveway clear of ice to prevent any incident of injury while servicing your home. As a side note, please also remember to keep your driveway sanded and clear if you are renting out your residence in the winter. Please remember to let your renters know that we don’t allow parking on the road. Snow removal can be interrupted due to this, and we all want a safe roadway. We have received many calls already this season regarding concerns with Birchwood Road conditions. If you have concerns with road conditions, please not only let us know, but Maintenance as well, so we can make sure communication is getting to the right people to keep everyone on the roads this winter. Birchwood provides recycling services to our membership and have had a great relationship with Emmet County Recycling thus far. We want to be able to maintain that relationship, and so I’d like to review the recycling system in place currently. While many of you might have used a single flow type of service where any recycled materials can be put into one bin at other locations, that is not the setup we currently have at Birchwood. Our service is a dual flow system, meaning all items must be sorted out prior to placing them in the correct bins. We do have cameras that oversee that area and will follow up with members not following protocol at the
recycling station.Violations regarding the recycling may result in a fine per occurrence. Please do your part and make sure you are sorting and disposing of your recycling properly moving forward. If you have any questions on this, please feel free to contact me to discuss. I would also like to send a brief reminder to everyone that all tree removal or inspections need to go through the Chief of Security prior to any work being done. There is a process that requires an approval for any exterior remodeling, landscaping, or tree removal. The best practice is if you have a question about projects, just ask. Regarding safety, the first concern I have currently is regarding the ponds on property. Although frozen, these are still a serious safety threat, and nobody is permitted to be on the ponds at any time. Please make sure all guests, especially children know that we do not allow anyone to be walking over the frozen ponds. In other news, in the last two months, we have hired two new EMS/Security Officers, both with vast knowledge and background as medical professionals. Jimmy is our new FullTime night officer and will be handling calls primarily in the evening and early morning. Chris is part-time and will be on every other week as an officer, but will also help with needed education classes for individual licensing requirements. We are excited to have both of them join our team, and feel they are a great addition to our already existing Security staff. Thank you for your understanding of the association policies and procedures. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Sincerely, Derek Williams, Chief of Security & EMS (231)526-2166 ext. 549

RACQUET SPORTS PROFESSIONAL Some big news in the Pickleball World! The 2022 revisions to the USA Pickleball Rules have been announced. The “provisional” qualifier was dropped from the Drop Serve rules. The Drop Serve is now officially in the rules as an acceptable serve. If you are new to pickleball and do not have a background in racket sports, the Drop Serve may be easier to become proficient with. So, should you use the Drop Serve or add it to your game? If you are having trouble with your volley serve, the Drop Serve may give you more confidence. The one rule you must comply with on the Drop Serve: the ball has to be dropped. This means that the ball cannot be propelled downwards (or tossed up and then allowed to bounce). Instead, it must be dropped out of your hand with no downwards force applied to it. Once you drop the ball, the 3-rules of the service motion (ball hit under waist, upward motion on swing, and paddle under wrist) no longer apply. Dropping the ball is the only requisite. Speaking of which, the ball can be dropped (and bounce) anywhere on the court. When you hit the serve, your feet must remain outside the baseline and between an imaginary extension of the center and sideline. The ball, however, can bounce anywhere on the court. The elimination of the Provisional and addition of the Drop Serve into the permanent rules makes the Drop Serve a great addition to your game. If you have never played pickleball, why not? It is the fastest growing sport in the United States. It is Great Exercise, Great Fun and Great Socially. Make it a 2022 goal to a least give it a try if you have never done so. All the Best, Chuck Reisig and the Racquets Department Chuck Reisig, USPTA Elite Pro, IPTPA certification Director of Racquet Sports chuck@birchwoodcc.com

Congratulations on the “perfect” shot! On another note, I’m happy to announce that 1st Assistant, Tyler Fisher, has been promoted to Head Golf Professional. Tyler earned his PGA Membership last year after graduating from the PGM program (Professional Golf Management) at Ferris State University in December of 2019. Tyler has certainly been a big asset to the golf operation and I believe this position is well deserved. There is much that goes on behind the scenes of our operation and I look forward to teaching and helping Tyler become more involved in the particulars of the golf business. Please help me welcome Tyler to his new title! Well, that’s about it for now. I’ll have much more to report as we get closer to opening day. In the meantime, I wish you all good health, happiness and cheers to a great season in 2022. As always, thank you for your continued support and friendship. See you soon. Together, we were able to support and partner with many local organizations to make a real difference in this community that we all love. Our partner organizations are very grateful. The Birchwood Outreach Fund’s important work can build momentum and do even more in 2022 with the support of our members. Thanks for your consideration! In 2021, the Birchwood Outreach Fund provided grants to 9 local organizations, 3 of which are featured here: We helped feed people – Manna Food Project. Manna Food Project operates its own food pantry on-site, serving an average of 100 households every week. The clients select from a variety of dry and non-perishable goods, fresh produce, meat, dairy, and bakery items to meet their needs. The needs in the three counties served are great. The 2021 BOF donation was directed to the purchase of a refrigerated truck to transport perishable food allowing the offering of more nutritious fresh produce and other fresh products.
We helped provide an opportunity for young entrepreneurs – Farmers are our Future. 22 young entrepreneurs, age 4 - 17, were able to develop and produce products and successfully sell them (cookies with lavender, beach glass jewelry, fire starter kits, cards, crochet pigs, and others) at the Harbor Springs Farmers Market as part of a Young Entrepreneurs Program. The BOF provided funding for 2 new tents with sides and tables.

We helped provide a great forum for learning and intellectual growth for all ages in our community – Festival of the Book. This annual event provides a great opportunity for children and adults to expand their minds and be stimulated to think and learn through books and interaction with the authors.
Congratulations to all the BOF donors!! Your contributions continue to make Birchwood a leading force helping to meet the needs of this community. The BOF Committee is proud to represent our current donors and applauds each of the new participating members joining the effort that will make a difference. To contribute, please make checks payable to: Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation 616 Petoskey Street, Suite 203 Petoskey, Michigan 49770 Please remember to write in the memo line: "Birchwood Outreach Fund" Thank you very much for helping to make a difference – Your Birchwood Outreach Committee. DIRECTOR OF CATERING Hello 2022! We are celebrating 50 years of Birchwood! We are planning on celebrating all year long so look for some new and old events honoring our Golden Anniversary. Winter is usually pretty quiet around the clubhouse but we did have a great holiday season. The Santa Brunch was a big hit with our littlest members and will continue to be a Birchwood tradition in the future. We also celebrated kicking off the 50 years celebration on NewYear’s Eve, with great food, lots of dancing and of course, fireworks! Make sure to check out our new Wednesday Night Supper Club over the winter. This event replaces Potluck and is held every other Wednesday throughout the winter months. Come and enjoy a social cocktail hour, followed by a wonderful dinner prepared by our talented culinary team.We also host a drawing for some fun prizes. Meet some old friends and make some new ones too! Spring is a great time to host a private party with your friends and family. Let’s plan an amazing meal with the Chef accompanied with delightful wine pairings to wow your guests! Contact me today to host an elegant evening in the Library. Our summer calendar is filling up so book those
Library or North Deck private parties today to ensure our availability. We still have some Fridays and Sundays open! Just a reminder, I am still looking for Birchwood memorabilia to display during our special events over the next year. If you have something from Birchwood’s past you would be willing to loan to the Club please reach out! I am looking forward to seeing all of our snowbirds return in a few months! BWA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I am looking forward to being the new BWA President for 2022 following Nancy Clark's strong leadership during 2021. I want to thank all of the women who are currently serving on or did serve on the BWA Board, those who Chair events, and those who serve as the Contact Person(s) for our many Interest Groups. It was wonderful to see many of you at our late Summer, Fall, and early Winter events. The Fall Luncheon, chaired by me, on September 16th was interesting to hear about the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book Claire Forney in late September by speaker Amy Gillard. Our "Evening to Remember 2022 BWA President in Paris" Dinner on October, 23rd, chaired by Beth Varner, was elegant, delicious, and so beautiful with all of the French decorations. The Fall Progressive Dinner on October 30th, chaired by Fran Borchers, Ronnie Higgs, and Kathy Thompson, was very appetizing and enjoyed by all who attended. Our new Cookie Exchange event on December 7th, chaired by Laurie Van Wormer, was fun with colorful, exquisite cookies provided and then taken home by each attendee. Our Christmas Cocktail Party on December 9th, chaired by Jan Denning, was such a delightful, fun event after a 2 year absence. It was heartwarming to see so many of our members together again enjoying the fabulous food in our beautiful, decorated Club. During our winter months, you can look forward to attending our Changing of the Guard business meeting and luncheon on January 27th, our Annual Snowshoe Event with Chili Dinner on February 5th, and our Birchwood Night at Pond Hill Farm on March 17th when the Clubhouse is closed. I do hope you can attend many of these events. Claire Forney 2022 BWA President
