Growing Our Services: Neuroscience and Urology Meet three of our newest providers who have joined our community. Across the United States and Michigan, there is a shortage of medical providers. Communities compete to recruit enough physicians. It is because of your support that McLaren Northern Michigan is able to attract qualified providers to our area. Your support of initiatives such as the Provider Development Program, Equipment and Technology Fund, and the Unrestricted Fund enables us to offer state-of-the-art technology that many new providers are trained on and want to offer to their patients.
Because of the generosity of hundreds of Foundation donors McLaren Northern Michigan was able to attract several new providers and purchase equipment such as the Leica Fluorescence Surgical Microscope, and a Lumenis MOSES Laser System (read more on page 4). Your commitment to our patients helps provide technologically advanced procedures that improve the patient experience.

“When I chose a career in medicine, I wanted to be a physician in a smaller community,” said Dr. Thomas. “Many years later that idea has become a wonderful reality, and I am excited to continue to build the specialized field of neurosurgery in Petoskey and northern Michigan.”
“After interviewing with the urology staff and McLaren leadership, it was clear that there is a vast need for urologic care in this region. There is a great team atmosphere and working environment that I am excited to be a part of.”

Your Gifts Bring Exciting New Technologies Thank you for making the purchase of the following state-of-the-art technology possible! Support from donors to the Unrestricted Fund helped purchase new equipment that improves patient outcomes.
“The microscope has been an absolutely wonderful addition to our neuroscience department, and it will go on to help an incredible number of patients in the future during their brain and spine surgery. It also has features that have allowed the department to grow and offer more treatments that were not formerly offered here. It has truly brought a magnificent upgrade to our institution. Thank you for the donation and my gratitude to you for making this happen” Justin Thomas, DO
Lumenis MOSES Laser System The Lumenis MOSES Laser System significantly improves the management of kidney stones, providing a less invasive and more effective treatment. It is also considered the gold standard for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) because of its precision and efficiency. This means faster symptom relief and a quicker recovery time. Your gifts are so important in supporting northern Michigan healthcare. Please consider donating to the Unrestricted Fund so we may continue to provide state-of-the-art technology for our patients.
Thank you!

Leica Fluorescence Surgical Microscope The Leica Fluorescence Surgical Microscope works in combination with Indocyanine Green fluorescence imaging to provide the Neurosurgeon with a complete view of anatomy and physiology. This allows surgeons to perform life-changing neurosurgical interventions with confidence that they have the best visual information right in the field of view. Dr. Thomas is using the microscope in 80% of surgeries, including operating on brain tumors and performing spinal surgeries.

Purposeful Philanthropy Profile: The Carpenters Jean and Shirley Carpenter spent countless weekends and vacations in northern Michigan as they raised their four children while he was working as a corporate attorney. In the late 80’s, their love of the area inspired Shirley and Jean to make Harbor Springs their full-time home. They spent their retirement years building friendships, skiing, and playing bridge. As Jean began experiencing health issues, he decided that it was time to give back to the area that had meant so much to the Carpenter family, but he wanted to make sure that Shirley was taken care of as well. Jean established a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) and named Shirley as the beneficiary, providing her a fixed income for life while also supporting McLaren Northern Michigan.
*
Together, they also included gifts for McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation and other charities that were important to them in their trust.
* What is a CGA?
A CGA is a contract between a donor and a charity in which the donor makes a gift to the charity and in exchange, the charity provides the named beneficiary with quarterly payments for life. The American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA) governs the payout rates, which are determined by the age of the named beneficiary. A charitable gift annuity may be a good option if you want an immediate charitable deduction but also want to secure a source of lifetime income for yourself or another beneficiary. It may also be a good option if you want to manage potential capital gains tax and support a charity with a significant donation. Call the Foundation at 231-487-3500 for more information, or consult a financial professional to help you determine what’s best for you.
Shirley and Jean Carpenter were generous donors to McLaren Northern Michigan during their lifetimes and included an unrestricted gift in their trust to be used for the “Area of Greatest Need”.
A trust is a powerful tool in legacy planning, allowing individuals to make thoughtful decisions—often with family input—about how to distribute their estate. The bequest received from Shirley and Jean’s estate was left unrestricted and will allow McLaren Northern Michigan to determine the most impactful use this year. “As the only specialty hospital serving northern lower Michigan and the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula, legacy gifts are vitally important to ensuring that patients have access to the best medical care possible,” said Julie Jarema, Chief Philanthropy Officer. “The gifts arranged by Shirley and Jean exemplify their commitment to this area and will allow us to invest in new talent, new programs, state-of-the-art equipment, or new technology to best serve this area.”
“Mom and dad loved the area and wanted to take care of others in our community. They were purposeful with their philanthropy and they thought there was nothing better for northern Michigan than a hospital that provided the most specialized care.” Lynne Carpenter.
