PRE-HABILITATION
PRE-OP PREPARATION
POST-OP REHABILITATION
The program initiates with tailored pre-hab exercises designed to improve patients’ muscle strength, joint flexibility, and overall physical condition before surgery.
This phase focuses on educating patients about the upcoming procedure. This involves personalized consultations, pre-operative exercises, and lifestyle adjustments.
Our highly skilled physical therapists work closely with patients to help patients regain mobility, functionality, and independence as swiftly as possible, minimizing the risk of complications and readmissions.
What Do I Do Next? PRE-OP PREP
Once you and your orthopedic surgeon agree that you need total knee replacement surgery, they will give you a list of things that need to be arranged before surgery. There will be home adaptive equipment to acquire, transportation arrangements to be made, meals to prepare, and possibly other appointments with your doctor to ensure you’re ready for surgery. You may be left wondering where to start. Here are the steps we recommend:
PRE-HAB Most surgeons recommend scheduling at least a few sessions with a physical therapist at least 1 month before surgery to help with post-op recovery. The better your strength, mobility, and balance are before surgery, the better your outcome.
ENROLL IN THE TOTAL KNEE REHAB INSTITUTE As soon as you have your surgery date, call the NMSMC clinic nearest you and let us know that you’d like to enroll in our TKRI program. We’ll be the easy-button for all things rehab-related. The appointments can all be scheduled with just one phone call.
Schedule your Pre-Op Prep appointment about 1 week before your scheduled surgery. By this point, most of your preparations have been made, but it is likely that you still have some lingering questions. How will I sleep? How do I use my walker or cane? How do I climb the few steps into my home? What should I expect between being discharged after surgery and my first post-operative appointment? The Pre-Op Prep appointment is a great time to get answers to all these questions, as well as learn some expert tips to optimize your recovery.
POST-OP REHAB
Schedule your post-operative appointments. Most surgeons recommend patients start physical therapy 3-5 days after surgery. These appointments can be scheduled as soon as you have your surgery date. Scheduling early helps ensure you can reserve the days and times that best fit your schedule.

Testimonials Did NMSMC get you back in action, doing what you love? Leave us a review at www.nmsportsmed.com today. Highly Recommend My experience at Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center was quite lengthy due to shoulder surgery and then a total knee revision. Throughout my entire experience, Cathy and Jesse educated me on the process of how different movements of exercise corresponded with my needs. Additionally, the entire staff was extremely welcoming and greeted each client with a smile and cheerful attitude. I would highly recommend Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center.

Impressed with the Teamwork After my total knee replacement, I asked around and several friends suggested Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center. The first day I met Molly. She explained what was happening with my knee, asked what my concerns were, gave the plan for treatment, and was kind and gentle during our first session. The second appointment was with Erika. Our appointment started on time, she showed me comfort when I had difficulties and yet, stressed the importance for exercise and stretches to be done correctly. The treatment continued and after a short period I was impressed with the teamwork and knowledge of everyone there.
Professional, Positive, Encouraging, and Fun! When my wife’s doctor said it was time for a total knee replacement, Deb was ready. But first he recommended physical therapy before surgery, (Pre-Hab) which she did for 3 months. Because of past successful and positive treatment at NMSMC, we asked to have her physical therapy there. This was the best advice as it prepared her physically and mentally for surgery. The clinicians took this time to explain what was going to happen (Pre-OP- Prep), and how Post-Op PT would be necessary to get range of motion and walking normally back. We both found comfort in understanding what was happening at all times. The staff showed us anatomical charts and explained in great detail how her recovery would proceed in and around the new knee. This knowledge kept Deb going forward. The initial post PT sessions were difficult. After several therapy treatments, her knee started to respond, and her range of motion increased. Deb started walking with the use of a walker and then proceeded to a cane, and then eventually walking without any aids. And now, four months after surgery she can walk with a normal gait for up to a mile and is looking forward to gardening this summer.
Although I hope not to have any more major surgeries in the future, I do know where to go for rehabilitation. Thank you to the team at Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center.
The staff is the highlight of being at Sports Medicine Center. They are professional, positive, encouraging, and FUN! PT after a total knee replacement is not easy. It takes a lot of work and encouragement to keep going. The clinical and office staff are so great. It’s like being treated by your own family! Deb and I have both recommended NMSMC to others. We talk to our friends about our positive experiences there.
