WELCO M E TO A

Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for our Summer & Fall 2024 Season For Dreamers. This season, we invite you to explore your imagination, experience extraordinary talent in your backyard, and celebrate the ways live performance can transform communities and bring people together. The Center is the realization of a dream more than three decades in the making—that Northern Michigan would have a year-round home for the performing arts, showcasing artists from around the world alongside local and regional talent.

This season, be transported to The Big Easy by the singular sounds of Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Dreamers of all ages will celebrate the songs and stories that have inspired generation after generation at When You Wish: A Musical Tribute to 100 Years of Magic. You’ll hear the stars of tomorrow, like Kanin Wren, Tanner Adell, and Alana Springsteen, and be able to say you “saw them when” right here in Northern Michigan. Hop on a boat to the Greek Isles for a hilarious and touching story of self-discovery, fueled by the timeless hits of ABBA in our production of the hit musical Mamma Mia!

This summer and fall also features more local and Michigan-made performances than ever before, with the return of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Bay View Music Festival; collaborations with Blissfest Music Organization, Crooked Tree Arts Center, and Lavender Hill Farm; and debut appearances by the Grand Rapids Ballet and Gilmore Piano Festival.

Performances like the one you’re about to enjoy are only one of the ways the Center works to serve all of Northern Michigan year-round. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we’ve grown our youth education programming to serve more students, presented free or low-cost shows at venues throughout our region, and created new accessibility initiatives to ensure that all members of our community may experience the joy and thrill of live entertainment. If you feel so moved, we invite you to learn more about how you can support these efforts on pages 22 & 23.

Thank you for dreaming with us, and enjoy the show!

231.439.1600 | BCCFAMILY.COM BUILDING EXCEPTIONAL HOMES AND LASTING RELATIONSHIPS SINCE 1972 Building homes is a craft. Building relationships is an art. BUILDING BOTH IS BIRCHWOOD.

More than two decades ago, a regional culture plan laid out a vision for a performing arts venue that would serve this remarkable community we call home. We are honored to be a cultural and social hub for all in Northern Michigan.

The Mission • The Center's mission is to inspire, entertain, educate, and serve all in Northern Michigan year-round by presenting exceptional experiences across the full spectrum of the performing arts and offering impactful educational opportunities.

The Vision • By 2025, the Great Lakes Center for the Arts will be recognized as a leading Midwest performing arts presenter and provider of broadened cultural opportunities.

The Center is currently in the process of developing a new five-year strategic plan. This plan aims to create deeper connections with our community and increase access while maintaining our commitment to delivering exceptional performing arts experiences and impactful education programs.

Leadership Update

Effective August 1, Kassia Perpich will be promoted to Executive Director, and current Executive Director Matthew Kacergis will transition to the role of Artistic Director for the Center.

Thank you, Michael Kaiser!

Michael M. Kaiser has served as the Center's Artistic Director and Strategic Consulting Partner since 2014 and oversaw the design and construction of the state-of-the-art facility. We are grateful for his guidance, leadership, and service.

From Founding Chairman, David V. Johnson:

“When we set out to build the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, we were determined to give Northern Michigan a world-class facility befitting the world’s finest performers. I’ve learned along the way that there is always an expert. Michael was that expert, and his leadership will continue to benefit our community for years to come, and we’re so grateful to call him a partner and a friend.”
