Your Wedding Reception

P

lanning and executing a wedding reception requires many challenging decisions that begin with simply deciding where, what and when. When choosing where, keep in mind that a small group offers more choices of wedding venues. Groups of 100 or more guests are limited to just a few larger, quite capable facilities on the Island. If your guest list is long and you’ve selected a Saturday for your wedding, you should make ceremony and reception reservations at least nine to twelve months in advance. If you are having a smaller event, planning is much easier. If you and your fiancé plan to elope to the Island to be married, almost all the bed & breakfasts, inns, and hotels on Mackinac can offer you last minute helpful service and advice. Larger hotels have on-site wedding coordinators you can consult who can take care of details at the hotel or you can hire a professional coordinator to completely handle all of the details from

beginning to end. Start by making some calls or emails to get initial information and availability, then things will quickly begin to fall in place. Each hotel offers its own unique features and location, but all provide very high quality, first class service.

Rehearsal Dinners

W

hen having a destination wedding on Mackinac, your guests might appreciate you planning something for them the night before the big day. Since the rehearsal dinner is the first opportunity for friends and family to get together, plan for something that will allow for everyone to meet and have a time of getting to know one another. Almost all of the Island's fine restaurants can host your rehearsal dinner. For something uniquely Mackinac, take your entire group on a hayride from your hotel to The Cannonball at British Landing. Owner Jack Armstrong says, "Everyone can climb aboard a real horse drawn wagon for a scenic ride along the Island's beautiful shoreline at sunset. Then, upon arrival, feast on a chicken BBQ on the beach." The Cannonball is situated at a beautiful outdoor location away from the busy downtown area. Then, after dinner, take the hayride along the shoreline road back into town while enjoying the water views and cool summer breeze off the lake. You can even bring your own beverages along with you for the ride. For more information contact Jack at 906-847-0932. Other unique ideas for a rehearsal dinner include having an outdoor BBQ at the Ice House at the Island House Hotel. The Pink Pony at the Chippewa Hotel is a favorite for lively gatherings, and reserving part or the entire dining room at Goodfellows Restaurant. All of the hotels offering reception facilities can also offer beautiful private settings for rehearsal dinners. Want more ideas? Sunset dinner boat cruises can be arranged through any of the 3 ferry companies or the Ugly Anne. Seeing the island from the water or cruising under the Mackinac Bridge is a treat that your family will never forget. Catering and music can be arranged. For more information telephone numbers can be found in the wedding directory. 14 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

Tuxedos

E

ven though Mackinac Island is a destination wedding location, providing formal wear for all the men in the wedding is easy, convenient and affordable, thanks to the only tuxedo shop serving the Island. Mackinac Island Tuxedo can take care of all the details to make it an effortless process. Simply have measurements taken at a local formal wear shop in your hometown and use these sizes to order your tuxes on Mackinac. Send them to the Island tux store, then pick them up upon arrival. It's that easy. If you prefer, have them delivered right to your hotel. This service is very simple and highly recommended instead of renting and bringing them from home. The extra rental time and logistics of travel make renting tuxes at home difficult with a high chance of complications, not to mention the extra effort involved. For the groom, groomsmen, ring bearers and even fathers and grandfathers to look their best at the wedding, formal wear should not be overlooked. "We're seeing a lot of charcoal, tan

and brown colored tuxedo requests recently," says Jack Armstrong at Mackinac Tuxedo. Choose a jacket that suites your build. If you're tall and slender, go with a double breasted tux to enhance broader shoulders. Vests are certainly in fashion these days, but cummerbunds are definitely out. Long ties are in and bow ties

have made a big comeback. Remember, always leave the bottom coat button undone. You can get information regarding styles, ordering procedures and measuring for a well fitted tux by calling the experts at Mackinac Island Tuxedo at 906-847-0246.

The Wedding Ceremony

T

he wedding ceremony is the ritual joining two people in marriage, sharing a partnership in love for better or worse, until parted by death. Having your ceremony on Mackinac makes it all much more special. The magical beauty of the Island offers two people in love an exceptional beginning to their new life together. If your tastes are a little different, or unique, Mackinac Island is the place for your wedding. Your friends and family will remember your Mackinac wedding forever. There are 4 wedding churches on the Island, and outdoor ceremonies are permitted in many beautiful settings. Weddings held on State Park property are subject to a $150 permit fee. This includes the East and West Bluffs, Windermere Point, and Marquette Park. Call the State Park office for details at 231-436-4100. Mission Church is available for weddings from early May to early October. For gatherings of up to 160 people, the $800 fee reserves two consecutive hours for decorating, the ceremony itself, photographs and clean up. A Mackinac

State Historic Parks host will be on hand to assist with any ceremony concerns. Wedding rehearsals may also be arranged at no additional cost. To help fill the sanctuary with sound, an electric keyboard is available at no charge. You can also arrange

an acoustic guitar, flute or bagpipe to be played from the balcony during the ceremony. After the kiss, the old church bell may be rung by one of your guests to mark the occasion. Mackinac State Historic Parks is making "something old and some-

S

ince your wedding pictures will capture one of the most significant events of your life, it's easy to see why your photographer is an important part of the day. And since you've already invested a considerable amount of time and money to come to Mackinac for the wedding of your dreams, how do you make sure that after your wedding there are no regrets regarding your photography? Hire a local Mackinac Island photographer and videographer. Many times, a family member, a friend or even a professional photographer from home will offer to photograph your wedding charging you just their expenses. They come expecting to combine a vacation with something they love to do - take photos. The motivation for a friend to shoot a destination wedding and charging

just for expenses might let them gain experience for themselves but you're gambling with images of one of the most important days in your life. Looking at websites and finding a really fancy site with sample wedding photos doesn't necessarily mean they have the experience to come and photograph your Mackinac wedding. The variety of locations, seasons, foliage, weather, transportation and the Island's unique lighting can all be a problem for photographers unfamiliar with the Island. A local photographer should offer to spend time with you on the phone to get to know you and discuss your wedding plans. If you are coming for an advance visit, try and set up a personal meeting to discuss your wedding. "Our photographers not only have

plenty of photo experience, but we are also in the relationship business. We are proactive and know how to be in the right place, ready to capture the emotions, the excitement and the love that flows between people at every wedding. Our photographers are always posing, moving, looking, watching and following you to capture those perfect pictures - priceless pictures that matter today, and 25 years from now," says Christi Dupre of Island Photo. “Riding around the Island in a beautiful wedding carriage is a memorable event best captured by a photographer with Island experience," says Jeffrey Dupre. "Our photographers follow the bridal carriage on bicycles allowing us the flexibility and mobility to capture the most unique moments of your wedding, being in the right place for perfect pictures and stopping at Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 25

the best locations for beautiful candid and classic portraits." Black and white continues to be a popular addition to the wedding photo collection. Wedding photography is all about emotion, and the simplicity of black and white conveys a simple, classic and romantic image. "When you look at a black and white photograph you tend to see a mood more so than the actual subjects in the picture," says Kate Dupre, photographer for Island Photo. "Black and white can bring out fervent emotions to a scene or a pose that sometimes gets lost using color." After the wedding, the photographers's job is just beginning. Capturing the images on the wedding day is only the first step. A good photographer will spend even more time on the computer in the "post-production" phase, sorting, analyzing, color correcting, retouching and enhancing your photos. It is an essential part of the job. "Post production, using up to date photo editing software, makes your images absolutely perfect", says Jeffrey Dupre of Island Photo. "An amateur photographer or family friend rarely has the experience to do what we do. We spend hours and hours perfecting every single image," explains Jeff.

Videography

A

professional video chronicles your Mackinac Island event like nothing else. The astonishing beauty of the Island filled with brilliant flowers, Victorian architecture, horse drawn carriages, and of course, the bride and groom, creates a fairy tale story that is beautifully captured on video. There is simply no substitute for videography. Video records sight and sound capturing those special moments of your day on a DVD to share with loved ones in a way still photos cannot. Make sure your videographer is local and experienced working on Mackinac Island. Terry Rayment of Mackinac Video Productions explains, "A professional videographer familiar with the Island understands the movement and sounds of the Island capturing your day like no one else." The videographer should have the right equipment, including a bicycle, to follow your wedding carriage. Your once in a life-time wedding day is so important to document and beautiful to watch that you should not rely on a friend or relative to record it. Hire a local professional and make sure it's done right. If you envision your wedding video looking like something from a movie or if you want to include special effects, titles or music, then you will want your video edited. The best videos usually include edited footage from multiple cameras from different angles accompanied with transitional effects and beautiful music. Expect the post wedding production of your video to take several weeks. Videographer Kelly Rayment explains, "Post production of the wedding video can take a lot of time depending on the length of the actual footage. Instead of rushing this process, the wait is made easier with the option of a "Social Media Recap" - a short synopsis of the

day that can be emailed to friends or posted to Facebook - delivered ahead of the full project." Ask if your photographer and videographer have experience working together. Those who have worked together invariably provide better

results. Also, personality and professionalism play a part of your wedding day coverage, so get to know your videographer. Pick up the telephone, make the call and talk with the people who'll be recording the most important day of your life!

Wedding Consultants

ome brides visualize exactly what kind of wedding they want, to the very last detail. They know the style of dress they'll wear, what the invitations will look like, the kind of flowers, and the wedding cake, sometimes even before they've met their groom. Other brides prefer to look at hundreds of wedding samples and choices for every single part of their wedding. Most brides fall somewhere in between, but everyone ultimately needs help planning. Fortunately, no matter what kind of bride you are, there's no question, a wedding coordinator can help streamline the process and make sure your wedding is everything you dreamed it would be. Couples with large wedding budgets aren't the only ones who can benefit from the help and knowledge of a

coordinator. Someone who is familiar with the local vendors can share insightful information with you, saving hours and hours of research. There are huge time savings when a coordinator takes on the administrative tasks such as coordinating schedules, booking meetings with vendors, and confirming all the elements and timetables of the day. Then of course, she will closely follow along the entire day to ensure perfect staging of your dream wedding. If you secure the services of a local wedding coordinator, wonderful things begin to happen. All the larger hotels have on-site event coordinators who can assist you with details within the hotel. An independent consultant will advise and arrange every aspect of your event from a creative and experienced perspective. Just as important,

on the wedding day the consultant will oversee everything for you. Mackinac Island offers a diverse selection of seasons, locations, and facilities for ceremonies, rehearsal dinners, parties and receptions. Couples can actually save money because coordinators know how to best allocate your budget, what costly items to avoid and give ideas and realistic suggestions that can save you money. "I like to talk with the bride about the entire wedding day to get a feel for the couple before I make any vendor referrals. That way I am able to tailor the vendors to suit the needs, preferences and budget," says local professional Mackinac wedding coordinator Carole Erbel of For the Love of Mackinac ! Once decisions are made, knowing how to reach and work with the vendors avoids potential last minute confusion. Your coordinator will handle all these important details for you.

With an expert such as Carole Erbel on hand to deal with the details or unexpected problems, the bride and groom can relax and simply be guests at their own wedding. It also takes the burden off mothers or other family members who might find themselves doing something they hadn't planned on. "On the day of the wedding I make sure that everyone is in their place and everything is where it needs to be. I have everyone's contact information with me so if I need to, I can make a quick call with a question or to confirm, so the bride and her family won't have to deal with any issues or concerns," exclaims Carole. Bridal consultants are available to give as much or as little support as needed. They can also add a special touch to any wedding, since they have the experience and know the industry well enough to make really worthwhile suggestions. From experience, they have gleaned a million ideas ready to combine with your desires to design your perfect wedding. Still, a bride need not worry about turning over control to someone else. With any coordinating service you always have the final word. When the wedding day arrives, your consultant will be on hand fully prepared with vendor contracts, detailed time line, schedule notes, horse and carriage details and all vendors on cell phone speed dial; everything is handled. It's absolutely the best wedding gift you can give yourself! Be sure to attend the 2014 Mackinac Island Bridal Show held at Mission Point Resort October 4th. Over 40 local vendors will be on hand, goodie bags filled with coupons, free gifts are handed out and thousands of dollars in door prizes are given away. Call 906 8473000.

They have two locations to chose from; downtown across from the Little Stone Church in the Gate House Shops, or at the salon located in-house at Mission Point Resort. Mike Iles, manager of 7th Heaven, says, "the wedding hairstyle you choose is almost limitless. Whether you choose to embrace the glamour with a gorgeous updo and tiara or play the contrast game by going with a more natural hairstyle, almost anything goes. Sophisticated hairdos and natural looks are best, but you’ll want to stray away from trendy dos like braids, and try to secure some of your hair so that it doesn't distract from your face." You might want to schedule a pre style the day before so you and your stylist know what will be done on the wedding day, that way there are no surprises. Don't forget to pack your lipstick,

Wedding Cakes

and Fudge Favors

O

h, those wonderful wedding cakes! Sumptuously delicious and ornately decorated, the cake is the center of attention at the wedding reception. Wedding cakes today range from the traditional kinds to the more contemporary ones adorned with colorful flowers, ribbons or fondant decorations. Each cake is the creation of the bridal couple and is personal and meaningful to them. Everybody is a little different but ultimately, everyone wants their cake to be unique to them. Whatever the design, the cake adds a unique and personal focal point to the reception. Kim Sperl, of Bella e' Dolce Cakes says, "Today's bride is more involved than ever in designing her wedding cake. Using each wedding couple's ideas, we work with them to design a cake that is as individual as they are. Fulfilling their vision, whether it be traditional, rustic, formal or whimsical, provides a personal and unique focal point for the couple's reception." People definitely want their cake to look awesome, but they are most concerned with how it tastes. It can be beautiful but if it doesn't taste good, what's the point? As you begin your search for your ultimate cake, expect to see creations you never imagined. Perhaps a luscious devils food cake filled with choc-

olate mousse and glazed with shiny dark chocolate. It could be designed as a stack of square boxes wrapped in white chocolate ribbons. Not to be overlooked is the cake topper. The traditional plastic bride and groom has been replaced by tops that are whimsical or elegant and personalized. Glass, porcelain figures or a nosegay of fresh flowers to match the bouquets can be used. Perhaps the finishing touch might be a symbol of Mackinac such as a horse and carriage, a gazebo or lighthouse. Discuss your ideas with the baker who will work with you to create the wedding cake of your dreams. Annie Lockwood from Annie's Cakes explains, " Bringing a cake from home is not at all practical since cakes are too delicate to withstand a long hot car trip, the ferry crossing to the Island and a taxi ride to the reception. We deliver and set up at your reception, so there are no worries!" A local Mackinac baker will work with you to create your perfect cake and, best of all, deliver and set it up at the reception. No Mackinac Island reception is complete without a small box of delicious Mackinac Island fudge for each and every guest as a wedding favor. Since Mackinac Island and fudge are synonymous, no treat is more

treasured than a gift of fudge. Joann’s Fudge or Murdick’s Fudge are both famous fudge making companies who can arrange such a treat for the reception or rehearsal dinner favors. Made fresh daily right on the Island, the individually boxed confections may be personalized with the bride and groom’s names and delivered to the reception. The boxes hold about 1/2 a slice of the wonderfully delicious fudge. These shops offer a wide variety of fudge flavors as well as other candies and chocolates available for your wedding. Give your wedding guests a sweet slice of the Island. Call them for more information and details about ordering fudge favors for your wedding guests.

T

oday, most news can be transmitted electronically by texting on your cell phone, emailing or posting on Facebook and Twitter. But when it comes to news about your wedding, tradition continues to reign. It's that distinct, personal invitation physically delivered to your guests that happily beckons them to your special day. First impressions are lasting, starting with your save the date card, or the wedding invitations you send. "Capture the magic and beauty of your Mackinac wedding, not just in your invitation but in all of your wedding stationery," explains Grace Armour of Great Turtle Creations. She can create custom invitations, save the date cards, announcements, thank you notes, table seating cards, menus, programs, maps and more. “Gone are the plain black and white invitations,” says Ms. Armour. Today you can send almost any style of creative, custom invitations and announcements that reflect your

individual personality and taste. The invitation is often a reflection of the wedding and sets the tone for what kind of event is planned. A casual whimsical card implies a casual wedding whereas a formal card indicates a formal black tie event. Many couples choose to include a bit of Mackinac as part of the wedding invitation by using artist renderings of Mackinac Island on their printed

material. “Historic churches, gazebos, horse drawn carriages, and even the Mackinac Bridge may be included in the invitation and will convey the message that your wedding is a special event happening at an special place.” Incorporating custom designed print materials for your wedding is a truly nice touch. Don't forget the thank you cards too!

Our Mackinac

Island

Fairy Tale By

Heather Gooding Photographs by

Island Photo

My love affair with Mackinac Island

began as an 8 year old girl as my family would spend an entire week on the Island for many summer vacations. One of my favorite things to do was to wait on my bike outside the church to get a glimpse of the bride and groom leaving their ceremony and climbing onto their horse drawn carriage for a trip around the Island.

Heather& Todd

met on Mackinac and thanks to great vendors their Island storybook ended with the fairy tale wedding they imagined.

As I grew older and was able to travel there as a young adult with friends and family little did I know that one day my dream wedding would come true - the dream I had as a child of getting married on Mackinac Island. In 2012, my second trip to the Island that summer, was with my good friend Tammy. That same day, Todd Gooding had plans to visit Mackinac Island with a few of his friends staying at the Lake View Hotel on the Island, where Tammy and I were also staying. That evening, at Horn’s Gaslight Bar, Todd and I met for the first time. Our romance began right there that led to many trips back and forth between Portage where Todd lived and my home in Lansing. Todd's love for Mackinac Island grew as well and the following spring we took an early season trip to the Island where he proposed to me at none other than Horn’s Gaslight Bar. Plans for our wedding transpired and we both agreed that we would get married on Mackinac, the place where we met and fell in love. A perfect place that reflects our relationship – beautiful, special and unique. Planning the wedding of my dreams from home while I worked full time called for assistance from professional wedding coordinator, Carole Erbel of For the Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 37

Todd and I know we had the wedding of a lifetime!

Love of Mackinac. She took on the task of streamlining the process and saving hours of research. She advised us as to vendors and arranged all the details, allowing our perspectives as well. Her expertise, enthusiasm and friendly support gave me us the feeling of trust and assurance for our wedding week-end. She coordinated and handled all the details from the time we stepped on the Island, through our rehearsal evening and the entire wedding day, so Todd and I could relax and enjoy our experience. We chose Mission Point Resort for our ceremony and dinner reception. This resort had everything that we wanted for our entire wedding weekend activities. On Friday evening our rehearsal dinner was held at the elegant Colonial Room in the Main Lodge. The next day our ceremony, scheduled to be held at the Waterfront Gazebo, was moved inside to the stately Johnson Hall because of rainy weather. We are grateful to our minister, Thomas Marx, who performed our ceremony. His congenial demeanor put us at ease and made us feel very comfortable. Our programs for the ceremony, designed and created by Grace Armour of Great Turtle Creations, represented Mackinac Island with beautiful artwork of a horse and carriage, just like the one we took after our ceremony. The rain had let up after the ceremony just in time for our carriage ride. No Mackinac Island wedding is complete without a horse drawn 38 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

carriage ride after the ceremony. We chose the White Vis-avis from Gough Carriage Livery and our driver was waiting for us outside the hall. We climbed in and had that romantic ride that I had always dreamed of. Both of our photographers, Jeff and Christi Dupre of Island Photo, followed us on bicycles where we stopped at several places to take photos. We even stopped in front of Horn's Bar where it all started. Getting out of the carriage, Todd dipped me to the cheers of many on lookers and of course the clicking of many photos. Stopping at several other destinations for pictures, our carriage ride was fantastic. Even a bit of rain and wind would not stop us from having the time of our lives! Our cocktail hour and reception were held in the beautiful Cypress Room at Mission Point. The natural beauty of the exposed wood log beams overlooking the front lawns and Lake Huron contrasted with white table linens, jewel toned flowers and candles flickering off all the glass. The entire staff at Mission Point was exceptional and the food was superlative. Kim Spiral from Bella e’ Dolce fulfilled the vision of our magnificent wedding cake decorated with real flowers. I also asked Kim to make a special “Pittsburgh Steelers” groom’s cake for Todd. We chose our wedding favors for each guest to be a personalized, color-coordinated box of mouth- watering Joa n n’s Mackinac Island fudge. After dinner DJ Brevin of Dancehall DJ's pumped the music for dancing. High energy entertainment is important to keep the dance floor packed the entire night – and he accomplished that. We even had some of the wait staff dancing with us. Our photographers, Island Photo, and our videographers, Terry and Kelly Rayment of Mackinac Island Video Productions, did a fantastic job working together and capturing so much of what we would never have remembered. Our photographs are stunning and most important are a treasured memory of a weekend that just flew by. The video of our special day was truly amazing and will allow us to re-live our dream wedding day whenever we want. Todd and I know we had the wedding of a lifetime! It didn’t matter to us that the weekend rained a little, everything was fantastic. Our wedding coordinator, the hotel staff and all the local Island vendors are experienced and understood the special challenges for Mackinac Island weddings. Our guests are still talking about what a wonderful time they had at our magnificent, incomparable fairy tale wedding on Mackinac Island!

Bridal Flowers

G

lorious flowers! It would be hard to imagine any wedding without them, lots of them. A wedding would just not be the same without flowers. Every bride wants her wedding to be memorable and her choice of flowers or arrangements should reflect her specific taste and personality. Her flowers should create a theme to make her wedding day special and provide the finishing touch to this very special day. Selecting a local florist who knows Mackinac Island will ensure that you receive the freshest flowers delivered to the right location on time and with superior service. Do not try to bring your flowers from your home-town florist. Those florists in this wedding guide know Mackinac Island and can make sure that your floral arrangements are

handled with the upmost of care. Think about where you want flowers to play a role in your wedding. Select the bridal bouquet and bouquets for the wedding party members, flowers for the ceremony location, carpets of fresh petals for an outside wedding, flowers at the tables and around the reception location. Looking at categories of flowers such as beach, rustic, modern, wildflower, vintage, or traditional wedding are a good place to begin narrowing down your search for wedding flowers, "Gone are the days where a swatch from a bridesmaid dress established the choice of the wedding bouquet, ," says Gracia Marshall of St. Ignace Greenhouse and Florist. tation issues and lower cost are the primary concerns. There are so many details to consider when planning a wedding that brides often set music on the back burner. Yet, in a recent survey from Bride and Groom Magazine, 72% of all brides say they would have spent more time choosing their musical entertainment. When asked, 81% of guests say what they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment. As important as the music is, it can be a challenging task to find the right group or DJ and choose the right music for all the parts of your wedding day. Even a very small or simple outdoor wedding ceremony can be made more memorable just by including a solo musician or a duet with a combination of elegant sounds.

CEREMONY MUSIC

Many of us have sat in a church and become misty eyed from the beautiful music. Sound creates many moods that set the emotional tone for the ceremony itself. Live music most definitely sets that mood. After the ceremony, imagine a bagpiper leading the bride and groom down the isle, followed by the entire wedding party. Most often, a song is chosen for the processional and for the bridal party and a separate song for the bride's big entrance. Live classical guitar, string duos and flute musicians are totally appropriate to utilize for the ceremony. Another consideration is to choose different songs for the parents' entrance, mothers' candle lighting, etc. Processionals tend to have slower more somber traditional music whereas recessional songs can be more lively as the ceremony ends.

RECEPTIONS

A DJ or emcee is essential to the overall success of any wedding reception - of any size. A DJ's assignment is working with the bride and groom on music selection, scheduling the generMackinac Island Wedding Guide 41

Music and Entertainment al flow of the evening's events, arranging special dances, assisting guests with "surprises", flash mob dances, special dances, etc. The DJ also coordinates timing with the hotel staff and basically is the project manager of the reception. DJs are the ones who impact the greatest number of guests and who make the party memorable for years to come. As many folks who choose Mackinac Island for their wedding live a great distance away, there are advantages to hiring a local DJ or musician. Hiring local talent reduces travel costs, ferry passes or hotel room charges added to the bill. DJs, bands and performers unfamiliar with the Island may have difficulties making arrangements. Musicians who are familiar with the Island and the Island's hotels rarely have problems and as a result, offer lower rates. Today’s disc jockeys are performance artists in their own right, offering balanced and eclectic types of musical styles for all types of people. Most DJs can also provide music for the ceremony, even if outdoors, as well as the cocktail hour, dinner time and the dance portion of your reception. It's a good idea for your DJ to have a cordless microphone so the toasts can be given beside the bride and groom so guests can watch their reactions. Not all DJ's are created equal and it is important to have a contract that spells out all details, a clear line of communication via email or telephone and a detailed time line that lists all criticalpath items to insure that all important events occur as planned. Patrick McManus from MICA Entertainment says, "I always try to meet face-to-face with my clients prior to the wedding and consult via telephone once the time line and detailed 42 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

planning forms have been finalized". Formalities such as the toasts, cake cutting, garter ceremony, bouquet toss, first dance and special bridal dances need to be discussed. Also,

confirm the ending times, and can that be extended? One important DJ duty is to announce the arrival of the immediate families and the wedding party into the reception. Brevin Cawthorne of DJ Brevin says, “ You should provide the disc jockey with a complete list of names and the correct pronuncia-

tion of those to be introduced. The first dance is traditionally an important part of the reception where a particular song with significance for the bride and groom is played. If you can’t select one particular song, ask your disc jockey, in advance, for suggestions for the first dance. Having live musicians at your ceremony and a good disc jockey at your reception can make the difference between guests simply having just a nice time and having a phenomenal party they'll never forget. Trust these local professionals as they are there to make it all happen.

Wedding Carriage Rides

o Mackinac Island wedding is complete without taking a horse drawn carriage ride. Lovers for centuries have used the horse and buggy to parade around Mackinac’s peaceful, scenic roads. A bride arriving to her wedding ceremony in an elegant carriage makes an unforgettable grand entrance. After the ceremony, the bride and groom can continue with a romantic ride through the Island, feeling like royalty and having that romantic time to themselves. two high stepping horses. There are three locally owned carriage companies on the Island that offer personalized, private wedding carriages for charter. Each company has several colors and styles to choose from. The carriages are paired with a team of handsome horses and a driver dressed to accent the carriage. All the carriages offer retractable tops and side window panels that can go up to protect the couple in case of bad weather. Many carriage rides begin by picking up the bride and bringing her to the wedding ceremony. If this option is selected, the carriage will need to be rented for additional time beyond one

hour. After the ceremony, the carriage picks up the couple while family and friends watch the newlyweds depart. Guests love taking photos themselves as they wave goodbye. During the ride, guests have a chance to make their way to the reception or dinner, allowing the couple time to be alone together. When the carriage ride is over, guests are usually in place and the newly married couple make their big entrance to the reception. Be sure your photographer follows your carriage on their bicycle to beautiful areas for awesome pictures. Carriages are rented by the hour which is enough time, after the ceremony, to ride through the Island stopping for photographs at various locations. The carriage route is usually determined by your pickup location, reserved time, weather, time of day and current conditions but usu-

ally your photographer and the driver determine the best route and work together to make your ride perfect. Carriages typically ride through the downtown area, passing by views of the Mackinac Bridge, lighthouses, shoreline, through the woods and atop both east and west bluffs. Many couples include their wedding party or parents on carriages, so consider including a second or third touring style carriage to join you. Having the bridal party or parents joining you makes for a memorable experience for them and a chance for more photos of everyone on location during one of the carriage photo stops.
