Carey and Steinway

I

am often asked, “The music building is busting at the seams! Why are you worried about having new pianos?” Well, that is a great question. Yes, the music building is busting at the seams, and it is a very exciting place to spend my days and often nights! But really, a building is just a building. It is the students and faculty, and yes, our instruments and music, that bring life to these walls. Another frequently asked question is, “Why Steinway? Why not go with something cheaper?” Those are great questions too. My answer is simple. I feel called to provide the absolute best for Carey music students and faculty. Steinway pianos are simply the best pianos made. My faculty colleagues and I spend hours every day trying to provide the best instruction we can for our students. We encourage them to practice, we expect them to perform well, and we feel compelled to provide the best instruments in the world. My question is why would we provide less than the best? Can a student become a great musician without the best pianos in the world? Well certainly! Carey graduates great musicians every year, and the pianos we have are well-worn and have seen better days. New pianos in the practice rooms and a Steinway Concert Grand piano will give our students opportunities to grow and develop their performance skills at a higher level than the pianos we now have. Currently our students have to adjust to the “uniqueness” of our used pianos rather than freely performing on instruments that will respond to gifted musicians. Thank you for helping provide for our students. We are genuinely appreciative of what you can do. Most of us cannot write a check for a new Steinway Concert Grand piano. But I want you to know that our students are working hard to raise funds for new pianos, the music faculty is contributing financially to this project, and many of our friends and alumni have made a commitment to “attempt this great thing” as William Carey would have said. So, again, on behalf of our students and music faculty, thank you. Come to a concert. Hear the great music. Get to know our student performers. Enjoy seeing and hearing what you are helping to create through your generous gifts.. Blessings!

“The quality of a school’s pianos affects every student that passes through. As a pianist training in music education, I do a good bit of accompanying. The level of collaboration, the support felt by the singer or instrumentalist, and my own freedom and ease in playing is brought to such a higher place when playing on a Steinway.” Rebecca Robinson Sophomore Music Education Major with a Piano Emphasis

“As a performer, I can say that a Steinway in particular is a piano that can project and ‘sing’ unlike any other piano. The tone of a Steinway is remarkable, making it easier for me to feel comfortable and supported while I play or sing. Overall, my experience has been that Steinways are exceptional because of the unique quality of each piano’s sound as well as the stunning craftsmanship put into each piano. If each musician is prepared, a pristine performance can be expected each time.” Asia Greer Sophomore Music Education Major with a Trumpet and Voice Emphasis

“Any piano can be used to make music, but the touch and feel of a Steinway reveals the depth of the inner musician. The quality, tone, and variety of color are lacking in other instruments, but Steinway represents consistency and enduring excellence. Over the three years I have been studying music at William Carey University, along with many years before, I have experienced a variety of pianos throughout schools and churches. Even from a young age, it was easy to feel the difference between a piano and a piano of real distinction. With a lesser instrument, I still learn the notes on the page and where to place my hands, but it is far more difficult to learn the expression of truly making a beautiful phrase. A piano with perfect action and tone allows for more color, dynamics, feeling, and more music! Because of my heart for music, my school, and my desire to be as proficient with my instrument as possible, I am very excited to be a part of this campaign for excellence in my school. Adam Moffett Junior Church Music Major with a Piano Emphasis

“Being a true vocalist is embarking upon a constant voyage of discovery in worlds both real and imaginary. A Steinway serves as a marvelous companion and a vessel that fully aids in making that discovery possible. No other piano can give the feeling, volume, or sound of a full orchestra like a Steinway. These instruments aid the singer in feeling the full emotional power and support of every song or aria performed. Singing with a high-quality instrument feels more like performing a duet than just singing with an ordinary instrument. Steinways will always be a vocalist’s best friend both in the practice room and on the stage.” Ben Salters Senior Vocal Performance Major

“Playing on a Steinway really encourages a musician to play his or her best. When I sit down at a Steinway piano, I feel totally comfortable, confident, and free, knowing that the instrument will respond with each phrase and gesture. Steinway pianos are incredibly powerful, yet are also very intimate, allowing the pianist to experiment with the largest range of colors and sounds possible.” Nick Joslin Freshman Piano Performance Major

“Being able to perform with a quality piano can be the difference between a good performance and a great one. As an instrumentalist, knowing the piano collaborating with me is a well-made piece of art puts my mind at ease, guaranteeing mechanical errors are not a possibility. Having only top-quality instruments in our School of Music would inspire students to strive towards higher goals as musicians in an effort to perform to the standards of the piano with which they play. Josh Dern Junior Music Education with an Oboe Emphasis

“Every student that passes through a music program is affected by the quality of pianos available. The piano is the instrument of the classroom, the instrument of music theory, and the instrument that serves to accompany singers, choirs, and instrumentalists. The name and reputation of Steinway and Sons truly precedes it wherever it may be mentioned. Non-musicians quickly recognize the logo and name of Steinway and associate it with excellence. Thank you for being a part of our campaign, continuing the standard of William Carey University to provide excellence in education for all its students. The move towards becoming an All-Steinway School and providing our students with only the best instruments in the classroom, practice room, and concert hall will ensure that this excellence will be passed down to many more generations of students in the Winters School of Music. Brian Murphy Assistant Professor of Piano Studies
