The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a charitable organization that’s dedicated to improving and enriching life for all who live in our area. Founded by a group of local citizens in 1992, the Community Foundation has grown to be a valuable resource for our county, credited with over $36 million in grants over the past 30 years.
With long-term experience developing relationships with nonprofit partners and donors alike, we support and cultivate communities across Charlevoix County. Each year our grants encourage environmental stewardship, the arts, economic growth, health and wellness, youth advancement, recreation, education, and more.
ONE SMALL ACTION Your Community Foundation is changing and growing. New leaders emerge, roles shift, and new faces join familiar ones to move forward with donors and partners into the future. What hasn’t changed is our focus on making a positive impact on the quality of life for all who live, work, and play here in Charlevoix County. We embrace the idea that small actions can grow and create big waves, and we are here to put every action into motion to make that impact. We welcome gifts of all sizes – gifts totaled $1.95 million in the last year and 60% of them were $150 or less. We support the philanthropy of people who want to do their giving now. We encourage contributions to permanent endowments that will serve our community for generations to come. We provide a path for those who will do their giving when they are gone and celebrate their decision to leave a legacy. Whatever kind of donor you might be, the Community Foundation is here to help you make waves. Because of donors, people like you, the Community Foundation makes grants that advance positive change and offer opportunities across Charlevoix County. Grants and scholarships exceeded $2.6 million in the last year because of the participation of people who love where they live and engage to make a difference close to home. PLANT SEEDS SEED TO SALAD The Shoe Club works to instill motivation, self-worth, and teamwork at East Jordan Public Schools. Students and mentors recently renovated a gardening space where they grow food, compost food scraps, reduce food waste, and teach students that food, in all its forms, has value. Students plant seeds in soil enriched by compost created from cafeteria food waste; the vegetables that grow are used to provide healthy food options in meals served to students, and food scraps from those meals are composted to complete the cycle and start the process over again. The benefits of the garden easily expand beyond plentiful harvests, nurturing each member of the Shoe Club too.

While we know that good nutrition and hands-on science activities will benefit students, Shoe Club leader Matt Hamilton sees an impact with even more potential — “The garden provides opportunities for many types of mentorship. We have high school students mentoring middle school
students, as well as community members working alongside students and sharing their knowledge and skills. I have seen both high school and middle school students gain leadership skills and confidence, as well as communication and problem-solving skills.”
CREATE RIPPLES WLAC’S BOAT-WASHING STATIONS Northern Michigan waters are precious natural resources for residents and visitors alike. Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy (WLAC) is protecting the water from aquatic invasive species by installing boat-washing stations at launches on Walloon Lake. The Community Foundation has supported two boat-washing stations at Sumner Road and in the Village of Walloon to positively impact our waters. “The washing stations help boaters comply with a state law aiming to prevent the spread of invasive species. This small action – draining the water and removing any plants from your boat and trailer – will create ripple effects, protecting water quality in lakes for the future,” explains Josephine Roberts, WLAC Executive Director.
Josephine Roberts and Russ Kittleson, Board Chair of WLAC, are encouraged by the use of the boat-washing station. Boat-washing will limit the spread of invasive species like Zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil, and purple loosestrife while preventing others like starry stonewort and quagga mussels from entering Walloon Lake.These plants and animals can outcompete native species, which harms water quality.
To spur the development of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and help us begin a permanent endowment for area youth, Russ Mawby and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation issued a challenge in 1992: they offered to match every two dollars raised by the Community Foundation locally with an additional dollar up to $1 million dollars. The Frey Foundation supported the effort too by contributing one dollar for every four given by local donors. Today, assets dedicated to our community’s youth exceed $1.5 million and provide over $60,000 each year for Youth Advisory Committee grantmaking.
make a splash YOUTH IMPACT The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) gives young leaders in Charlevoix County the opportunity to support the interests and needs of area youth through grantmaking. YAC members learn the impact giving can have on their own community, starting with it’s youngest residents. We are proud of the many investments our YAC has made this year to help local youth thrive today and into the future. The Book Vending Machine at Charlevoix Elementary School rewards students for positive behaviors with a book of their choice. A grant helped the Charlevoix Kiwanis Youth Foundation purchase the machine and a Youth Advisory Committee grant purchased books.

Endowments for Student Success supported media center improvements at Boyne City Middle School and Charlevoix Middle/High School. The spaces are more inviting for students and offer a wide variety of books to encourage a love of reading and learning.

Boyne District Library launched a Family Dinner Book Club, opening a space for families to share a meal and enjoy a story together. launch a legacy BOB AND GRETCHEN TAMBELLINI If the face is familiar, that’s not surprising. For 18 years, Bob Tambellini served as the first president of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, coming from Flint with a background in the nonprofit field. “We’d always dreamed of living up north,” he says, “but still it was a leap of faith.” That faith was well-placed. Under his leadership, the Community Foundation gained the confidence and support of this community and grew a strong base of over $20 million. Following retirement, the Tambellinis enjoyed an active life in Florida – but they missed northern Michigan and vacationed here each summer. “We never lost the feeling that this was home,” shares Gretchen. So, in 2022, they moved back. That move prompted an update to their estate plan. “We feel close to this community and, of course, to the Community Foundation,” says Bob. Their future gift will establish the Bob and Gretchen Tambellini Fund for the Community, an endowed fund to support needs and advance opportunities in Charlevoix County, continuing the work Bob helped to launch for generations that follow.

CHIP HANSEN FUND FOR THE COMMUNITY Making a donation to the Chip Hansen Fund for the Community is a great way to recognize and celebrate Chip's retirement after 13 years at the Community Foundation.
