Welcome to the 35th Annual Blissfest! For many of us, Blissfest is more than a music festival. It is a homecoming, a reunion with friends and family. Old friends joining with new friends, all becoming part of our Blissfest family to enjoy three days of great music, food, dancing, loved ones and our beautiful Northern Michigan surroundings. My first Bliss was 24 years ago, attending with my mom and sister. We all still vividly remember the northern lights dancing in a circle above us, making the night that much more magical. As the years passed, I began coming on my own and camping with friends. Once I had children of my own, I wanted to watch them experience the wonders of Bliss as well and share memories with them and the rest of my Bliss Family. In order to help foster this tradition, kids under 12 have free admittance to the Festival and Blissfest also offers the kids activity area completely free-of-charge. Also, this will be the third year providing an exclusive space for teens. Club Bliss is an alcohol-free zone where teens can enjoy each other’s company, away from their parents and parents can rest assured their teen is in a safe, monitored place. Many members of my family make a special trip to Northern Michigan to share in this festival. Our love for this festival has led my family to do more than just attend. Many are active in volunteering and coordinating, which is the crucial foundation for the longevity of this place we call home for three days. Seeing my oldest son Dylan and his friends eagerly earn their festival tickets by selling ice cream or working in recycling assures me that the future is bright for Blissfest and the tradition continues! So much to do and see in these three days. This year we are excited to introduce The Michigan Stage, located in a grove of trees in the back 40, which will feature some of our many talented friends from our beautiful state. If you are new to the Festival you have to check out The Song Tree, where you will often find some of your favorite artists in a more intimate, acoustic setting than the main stages. You can learn and participate in percussion at the Drum Kiva where soulful beats are known to lead to dancing. You can’t miss the workshops in the woods—from instrument building to silk scarves— there is sure to be a FolksCool for you. Sign up at the volunteer booth. Hurry though, they fill up fast! Every year we have top notch food, crafts, and healing arts vendors. After many years of attending the Festival, I finally learned to stop packing so much food. It’s hard to go have a peanut butter sandwich at your campsite with all the amazing food offered by the food vendors. We continue to move forward with the Bliss Arts Recreation Center, better known as BARC. Along with the completion of the Bliss Store & Concession, we are also finishing the final steps needed in order to offer three-seasons camping here at the Festival Farm. Not only is Blissfest available for weddings and other gatherings, funds raised during the Festival help us to host a number of events throughout the year including the Family Camp Weekend, a disc golf tournament, and the Blissterfoot 5K in the Fall. Our solar initiative is taking shape in the form of new solar panel installations at the foot of the main stage, the timber frame, and third stage. Also, we have a new portable solar trailer we will be using at the Michigan Stage and offering to other festivals throughout the season so they can channel the sun also. Ultimately, on-site solar panels will produce enough power to cover the energy used for nearly the whole festival weekend! I would like to thank all of our volunteers and coordinators. We couldn’t do any of this without you! You are the glue that holds us together. Much love and appreciation to the executive director, staff, and fellow board members for all of their hard work and dedication to this organization. A huge thank you to all of the Blissfest members and patrons for your continued support. Happy Bliss! Angie Myers President, Blissfest Board of Directors

2014 Miah Award Winner Gail Edwards

The annual Miah award honors an individual or family who have been long-time festival volunteers and supporters of the Blissfest Music Organization.

Arlo Guthrie

Arlo Guthrie was born in 1947 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other. He is the eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher, Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease. Arlo practically lived in the most famous venues of the “Folk Boom” era. In New York City he hung out at Gerdes Folk City, The Gaslight and The Bitter End; in Boston’s Club 47, and, in Philadelphia, he made places like The 2nd Fret and The Main Point his home. He witnessed the transition from an earlier generation of ballad singers like Richard Dyer-Bennet and blues-men like Mississippi John Hurt, to a new era of singer-songwriters—Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs. He grooved with the beat poets Allen Ginsburg and Lord Buckley, and picked with players like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson. He learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a crowded community of singersongwriters and political-social commentators.

Abigail Stauffer

Abigail Stauffer brings all of her experience to the stage, weaving the language of acoustic, pop, and neosoul music into an irresistible invitation to heal and be healed. Chances are Abigail won’t break your heart, but she will add color to a black and white memory. Every song is a captivating showcase of confidence and vulnerability, naturally crafting a balance of pain, hope, and joy. Her music and live performances hold so much emotion for her and the audience—it’s hard to believe each song isn’t written specifically about you. Finally, an artist who writes about the things that really matter; Abigail will warm your heart and serenade your soul.

Ages & Ages

Ages and Ages is more than a band—it’s a collective of like-minded souls who believe in the power of music to change the world and elevate the spirit. Their music is bright and uplifting, with lyrics penned by band leader Tim Perry that deliver serious introspective messages full of insight and consideration for others. Ages and Ages is: Rob Oberdorfer, bass, vocals; Tim Perry, guitar, vocals; John McDonald, guitar, vocals; Levi Cecil, drums, vocals; Becca Shultz, keys, vocals; Annie Bethancourt, percussion, vocals; Sarah Riddle, percussion, vocals.

Candelaria

The Accidentals

Multi-instrumentalists, singer-songwriters Katie Larson and Savannah Buist have created quite a name for themselves among music lovers of all genres. Described as, “A duo giving an edge to folk with unique instrumentation,” Z93 FM DJ, Matt Mansfield writes: “Combine musicality, originality, and melodic beauty with a welcome and unexpected bite to clever lyrics, and you’ve got Accidentals music.” From 2012-2014, The Accidentals recorded three original albums, were guest artists on fifteen others, scored two films, and landed song placements in commercials, documentaries, and music compilations while playing over 700 live shows—before they graduated high school. They are back at Blissfest for the third time and graduating to Main Stage!

Barefoot

Barefoot is a new venture comprised of fiddling demon Ed Howe of Perpetual e-Motion fame and phenom Jamie Oshima creating innovative acoustic music from Whitefield, ME. Jamie’s talent as a multiinstrumentalist and striking vocals pairs with Ed’s bluegrass and dance fiddling improvisation from the soul. Barefoot play music from Maine in the traditional New England fiddle style blended with folk and funk.

Candelaria

Candelaria is back at Blissfest with a new recording and a bigger band this time around. The Cumbia style of raw, rootsy rhythms has been the inspiration for the group since forming in 2009. Cumbia is a genre popular throughout Latin America originating in Colombia’s Caribbean coastal areas. Candelaria applies dub studio techniques and reggae style bass to these traditional Colombian rhythms, creating a unique style of dance music with electronic sensibilities and a live feel. While many other world dance bands are drifting further away from live performance and into programmed beats and effects, Candelaria has gone in the opposite direction. All of their music is performed live and all the effects are done in real time. The main focus is always on keeping the dance floor hot and the party moving.

Dede and The Dreamers

The Defibulators

Dede and the Dreamers

Described as Ethereal Gypsy music this band will mesmerize you and send you into a dream world with sweet melodies and full sounds to tantalize your brain. This collaboration will have you snapping your fingers, singing along, dancing with your lover, and cuddling up to your closest friends. From humble beginnings, Dede has paved her way on her own experimental, alternative, off the grid musical journey. Dede has picked up her Gypsy skills over the years including soulful singing, raw songwriting, playing percussion of all kinds, dancing, community organizing, and being able to sleep in any location at anytime. Skilled in the art of the Vibraphone, Tambourine, Drumkit, Frame Drum, Snare Drum, Vocals, Word Smithery and much more, she is a versatile performer who can wear many hats, and does.

The Defibulators

Described alternately as “Hee-Haw on mescaline” and “Carter Family-meets-Ramones,” The Defibulators unique brand of country has made them pioneers in the Brooklyn country music scene. The band’s infectious energy and originality earned them a nod as one of Brooklyn’s best emerging bands in VICE Magazine, and a devoted following in a city not known for its love of country. “It’s fun to play for people who don’t think they like country music,” says singer Erin Bru. Guitarist/singer/songwriter Bug Jennings agrees, adding, “There’s something about the fastpaced, frantic, neurotic energy of New York that fuels our sound.” Call it what you will—Americana, indie honky-tonk, truckerpunk, or Brooklyn Country, the proof is in the listening. There is a unique familiarity that percolates throughout “Debt’ll Get’Em.” The reverence for traditional country forms combined with an irreverent rock & roll attitude is a trademark of the Defibs sound. Gear-grinding twang and sawing fiddles saturate songs rooted in the debt-laden and downtrodden—the moods swinging between satirical and sentimental, with unpredictable outbursts into total country chaos. When not on the road together, The Defibulators reside in individual, non-mobile homes in Hoboken, Harlem, and Brooklyn.

Delilah and The Lost Boys

Finvarras Wren

Delilah and The Lost Boys

A long time ago, at the dawn of the Atomic Age, a succession of no-good punks and ill-mannered teenagers took the best of American roots music — hard-partying honky tonk country, searing gutbucket blues and lonesome hillbilly twang—and distilled it into a potent moonshine known as rockabilly. This combustible formula, passed down through the generations, forms the heart of the revved-up stylings of Delilah DeWylde and the Lost Boys. Dressed to the nines in the tradition of pre-color television, the band has thrilled audiences across the Midwest with its spirited performances. Just like rockabilly originators Johnny Cash, Bill Haley and Carl Perkins, this Michigan trio cut its teeth on steel-guitar driven country in the style popularized by Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb and Webb Pierce. But the draw of the big beat was irresistible, and over time the band’s approach has become sharper and tighter. Not self-consciously retro, Delilah and the Lost Boys remain committed to handcrafted American music that stands at the crossroads of creativity and craftsmanship, liberally drawing from honky tonk country, rockabilly and surf music.

Finvarra’s Wren

One of North America’s most exciting Irish quartets, “making the kind of music you’d only hear on the west coast of Ireland,” this Detroit-based band has an intense dedication to their instruments and to Irish music. As a family based group, Finvarra’s Wren is capable of playing with a tightness and effortlessness that often evades other ensembles. Their performances have been described as “a swirl of musical tradition and performance energy.” They have performed at many of North America’s top music festivals and venues including the Austin Texas Celtic Festival, Dayton Ohio Celtic Festival, Kennedy Center, Washington DC, Goderich Ontario Celtic Festival, Saline Michigan Celtic Fest, Baltimore Maryland Irish Fest, Celtic Fest Mississippi and Ann Arbor’s prestigious Ark where they recently recorded their live album, “Dancing Mad in the Midnight Air.”

Freya

Freya welcomes you to music from the World Bazaar. Flutes, piano, Swedish nyckelharpa, accordion, octave mandolin, guitar, and vocal harmonies weave tunes of euro-folk-jazz by the hands of Lisa and Ingemar Johansson, Sue Wood, and Gary Cook. You will find yourself somewhere between a French Cafe, the Nordic tundra, a Michigan parlor and a Swedish sauna.

Funky Butt Brass Band

The Funky Butt Brass Band was formed in 2008 by six talented musicians who respect and revere the New Orleans brass band tradition. The FBBB takes classic New Orleans brass tunes and gives them a twist, in the style of Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth and Bonerama. But don’t be surprised if you also hear some Motown, Southern rock, Memphis soul, Chicago blues and St. Louis R&B in the mix. Returning by popular demand to Blissfest, the band was voted Best Funk/Soul Band at the Riverfront Times Music Awards for four consecutive years. They have played such prestigious festivals as the King Biscuit Blues Festival, Roots N Blues N BBQ, Taste of St. Louis, Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest, Gumbo Ya Ya and the Big Muddy Blues Festival. FBBB has shared the stage with some legendary Louisiana artists including Dr. John, Rebirth Brass Band, Bonerama, Chubby Carrier, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, New Orleans Suspects and the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

Galactic Sherpas

The Galactic Sherpas originally formed after surviving a terrible avalanche on Boyne Mountain. They survived for weeks, buried in the snow. There were dark moments which challenged their minds, bodies and hearts. They emerged having found solace in the singing of songs. Since then, the Sherpa’s have grown into a large family of rugged, Northern Michigan survivalists. But rather than stockpiling food and weapons, they have chosen synthesizers, tube amps, horns, drums and speakers. They are a hearty group of soul-searchers who have come a long way from those dark days under the mountain. Powerful horns, and strong vocals driven by a rhythm section which can only be described as “diabolical” give the Sherpa’s a truly unique sound. Their brand new album, “Fun in the Dark” has landed at Bliss!

Gangstagrass

They’re back with a new album, “Broken Hearts and Stolen Money,” released in 2014. These 12 tracks serve as evidence that the crossroads have moved North, where the dirt roads of Appalachian bluegrass meet the sooty city streets of Brooklyn. The band’s Jay-Z meets Ralph Stanley sound breaks barriers and destroys genres with its eclectic mix of low down and down home beats. The Gangstagrass Song “Long Hard Times To Come,” is The EmmyNominated theme of the FX series “Justified” and has sold 200,000 copies. Not only has Gangstagrass been on the forefront of the burgeoning genre unfortunately dubbed “Hick-Hop,” they clearly blazed the trail! Gangstagrass come by it honestly: Rench, mastermind of the group, was schooled on Run DMC and breakdancing while he was fed a steady diet of authentic country sounds like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

The Go Rounds

Kalamazoo’s favorite sons provide high energy twangrock & jelly-roll. The Go Rounds are a furious live act and progressive recording unit, and at the helm is none other than guitar crooner, Graham Parsons, who is no stranger to the Bliss stage having performed here in different iterations over the years. This group of virtuosic players is fueled by the history of its diverse lineup and a collaborative spirit injected into everything from song writing to arranging. Equally inspired by their record collections and the beauty of the Great Lakes State, the band explores soul music, baroque folk, art rock, country and classic rock n’ roll.

HuDost

The music of HuDost— Moksha Sommer and Jemal Wade Hines—the Neo Folk World Rock Ensemble from Montreal and Nashville—weaves a seamless tapestry of sound that renders tears and laughter in listeners, cultivating that nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts. A rich, eclectic blending of Pop and Rock with traditional Sufi music, Bulgarian, Croatian, Macedonian and Bulkan folk music, Farsi, Turkish, Arabic, and Folk, their sound crosses all borders and barriers, taking the listener on a journey they will never forget. They’ve toured the US, Canada and Europe constantly since 2006. In this time have grown as artists, as seekers, as a couple and as a family. In 2013 their amazing son was brought into the world.

The Go Rounds

Ignorant Mob

Ignorant Mob has crafted its original sound by merging brooding trombone and searing electric violin with jazz influenced melodies, conscious lyrics and impenetrable grooves to create a dubwise mixture of heavy roots reggae, old school ska and contemporary world rhythms. The Mob has been a favorite of Blissfest and are returning after a couple years in hibernation. Brothers Lake and Bryn Jungwirth (bass & drums) along with childhood friend and fellow musician Ian Zender (electric violin), formed Ignorant Mob after growing up playing together as a trio for many years. Shortly after, they joined forces with veteran musician Bob Mahin (trombone/percussion) to form the core of the group. Ignorant Mob’s many influences range from early ska and rocksteady (Skatalites, The Specials) to dub and roots (Augustus Pablo, Black Uhuru) to contemporary.

Their high-energy stage presence and uplifting high-vibration dance music has been described as “dynamic, full of energy and engaging.” Their upbeat performances interweave cultural information about the traditional music of Zimbabwe with interactive discussions and opportunities for everyone to dance. In Zimbabwe there is no difference between the audience and the performers, the whole community joins together in celebrations. Kupira Marimba’s mission is to bring that sense of community to you.

James Hill Band

Kayla Jo

Izgreyala

James Hill has made a career as one of Canada’s award-winning ukulele player who “gives the ukulele its dignity back without ever taking himself too seriously” (Songlines). Blissfest has seen that side of Hill when he performed at Blissfest back in 2006. However, if you thought James Hill was simply the ukulele wunderkind, his latest album will convince you that he is also a great songwriter as well. His most recent recording, ”The Old Silo,” sees him charting a course into deeper, rockier ukulele waters with an edginess and swagger unlike anything Hill has ever recorded. We are thrilled to have James and Anne back at Blissfest.

Winner of the Indi.com Blissfest Music Challenge, local native Kayla Jo brings brings a fresh sound and an attitude to match. Having grown up in northern Michigan, she has since traveled the midwestern festival circuit spreading uke-love and good vibes. She is back at her old stomping grounds to spread Bliss once more, this time from the stage! Kayla Jo blends genres in a way that melds folk, pop, and jams into a harmonious tune. With festival and venue experience under her belt, she is a natural on stage. Setting the tone and pushing the energy, she makes the night worth the party.

He is an awardwinning artist, performer, and children’s author of many books and CDs who loves to collaborate with other artists. Leftover Cuties

As with any true troubadours, love makes their world go ’round. On the band’s shining sophomore album “The Spark and the Fire,” love makes the heart sing, soar, ache and burn…often in the same hook. Shirli McAllen (lead vocals, ukulele), Austin Nicholsen (bass, ukulele, vocals), Mike Bolger (brass, keys, accordion, vocals ), and Stuart Johnson (drums, vocals)—have sparked a fire among fans with a timeless prohibition-era Jazz sound, combining sultry vocals, pop-perfect songwriting, and seasoned musicianship. Their spellbinding first album, “Places To Go,” won raves from critics. Their impeccable and atmospheric live performances draw ever-growing and increasingly passionate crowds in the speakeasies and rock clubs of their hometown Los Angeles.

Kellerville

Artists

Kellerville

Comprised of the combined songwriting of local phenoms Holly Keller and Lee Dyer, Kellerville is a blend of folk jazz and blues that tugs at your sleeve, gently pulling you out of your troubles and into the grass where you’re sure to stay and dream for a while. They come from a place both real and imagined on the edge of Lake Michigan. Nestled in the crook of willow trees in Cross Village is a tiny part of town where Lee Dyer and Holly Keller both grew up playing music. After many years of separate creation they formed an original acoustic duo to bring them back to the town that wrought them, and bring a new age to the folks who came before. With songs of storytelling and personal experience, let Lee and Holly paint you a picture of home with a song. Welcome to Kellerville.

Less is More

After meeting in a college a cappella group then going on to perform indie and folk covers with the band Me and My Friends, Jane Finkel and Brian Spencer of this Michigan-based band have been writing and performing their original folk alternative tunes for two years now. “We’ve really enjoyed our writing process so far,” Jane said only months away from recording their first album, “Amid the Flowers.” That fact is apparent in this diverse collection of songs with the lyrics and guitar riffs seeming to just flow out of them naturally with a creativity that is unharnessed and with their ideas fully explored.

Michelle Chenard and Pete Kehoe

Michelle Chenard is a veteran singer/songwriter who has been continually voted a favorite in Northern Michigan as Best Solo Performer, Best of the Best and more in Northern Express, Northern Michigan’s largest newsweekly. She released her first music video, “Blade,” with critical acclaim and to a packed house at City Park Grill, a well known music venue in Petoskey, Michigan, in the spring of 2012—a good year for Michelle as she scored a Michigan Emmy® Award for musical score on the TV documentary, “Sacrifice and Honor: A Tribute to our Northern Michigan Veterans.” She performs hundreds of shows across the state each year. In addition to her tireless schedule, Michelle founded Mackinac Island Songwriters Workshop with her brother from another mother, Pete Kehoe, has been writing and recording with country artist Julianne Ankley and performing with her band, Blood Sisters.

Mo’ Mojo

This female fronted, hard driving, high energy, “Pardi-Gras” band features three-part harmonies, accordion, fiddle, guitar, rubboard, sax, trumpet, harp, bass, percussion, and drums. Their songs in both English and French, take Zydeco music and infuse it with Americana, Cajun, reggae, rock & roll, funk, R&B, and African and Latin rhythms. Mo’ Mojo is a favorite at festivals and was selected by the AMA and Department of State as one of 10 bands for the 2014-2015 season to represent American music abroad. There first tour was in Haiti in July, the Dominican Republic in Oct./Nov. and a 34 day tour in Jan./Feb. to Belize, Panama, Mexico, and Barbados. 9

Less is More

Kevin Kammeraad & Cooperfly Puppet Troupe

Back this year for a Blissfest encore, Mulebone is a partnership comprised of multi-instrumentalist, John Ragusa and roots music specialist, Hugh Pool. The launching pad for their musical expression is traditional blues. Hugh plays guitars, harmonica, boot board and sings, all with a mouth full of whiskey and a giant heart. John plays, conch shell, Jew’s harp, cornet, all manner of flutes, tin whistle, and chimes in on the harmony vocals. Together, the sound of slide guitar boogies, single chord trance riffs a la Howlin’ Wolf, the up-tempo rags of Reverend Gary Davis and country blues of all shapes and colors can be heard. Sometimes they play close to the source, almost as if tracing the image, and at other moments, they re-examine the source, float above it, take a new look as one understanding their home from a distant land.

Pearl and the Beard

Pearl and the Beard are Brooklyn trio Jocelyn Mackenzie (vocals/percussion), Emily Hope Price (vocals/cello/keys) and Jeremy Styles (vocals/ guitars). The three passionately intertwine three distinct voices amidst a powerfully delicate orchestra of cello, guitars, keyboard, bells, and percussion, offering songs that speak to joy and sorrow, love and loss. The breadth of their songwriting and genre-defying sound is reflected in the vast variety of other artists with whom they’ve shared the stage, most notably Ani DiFranco, Matt & Kim, Ingrid Michaelson, DeVotchKa, Lucius, Laura Marling, Avan Lava, and The Drums. The trio are currently in the final stages of producing their third full-length album. Children mothered by all that is funky and soulful, musical innovation in its finest form...the gruesome twosome of ultimate Groove. The Pistil Whips were spawned in the deep dark depths of Boyne City, called to this world by the power of music. This duo combine the styles of funk, blues, and jazz to make a sound all their own—Eric Dane Jaqua on Farmer Foot Drums (a drum set operated with the feet only), guitar and vocals simultaneously, and Will Love on sax, clarinet, keys and beatbox flute. Will and Eric actually met at Blissfest in the summer of 2013. Will was there to perform with Boyne City-ites, The Galactic Sherpas. Eric was also there with Northern Michigan premier blues duo, Hipps-N-Ricco. They joined forces to become eternal brothers of funk—The Pistil Whips.

Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band

The Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band bridges genres and eras with an intensity and effortlessness few contemporary artists possess. And their new album ”So Delicious,” elevates the trio’s work to a new level. Produced by Rev. Peyton, “So Delicious” offers the band’s most diverse collection of songs buoyed by the Rev.’s supercharged six-string virtuosity—a unique style of fingerpicking inspired by his Delta blues heroes, but taken to new, original heights. The Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band has always been strong on authenticity, playing music that blends blues, ragtime, folk, country and other traditional styles with the sleek modern energy of do-it-yourself, homespun, punk-fueled rock—and performing tunes plucked from their lives, their community or from the canonical songbook that fed the Rev. Peyton’s formative creative identity. It’s a mix that’s allowed the band to win fans from all corners of the Americana and rock worlds, and bring a new generation to blues and other forms of American roots music.

Rocky Dawuni

Ghanaian international music star Rocky Dawuni has leveraged his popularity across the African continent to bring his unique Afro Roots sound to global audiences and champion social causes. Over the course of his career, and the release of five albums, his infectious grooves and dance-inducing anthems have consistently excited fans, including some of music’s biggest stars with whom he’s performed and collaborated. Seth & May Bernard

Samuel Seth Bernard and May Bernard (formerly May Erlewine) are known as the first couple of Michigan’s thriving new folk music scene as part of Earthwork Music. They have recorded and performed extensively both as a duo and as solo artists and they are regulars at the Blissfest Festival. Both born and raised in Michigan to musical families, the Bernards first met in 2003, when he was a performer at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival (using the name Seth Bernard) and she was attending. Both Bernard and Erlewine had a strong background in songwriting and performing and had tastes that ran from folk and blues to rock, and they soon became partners in music, then a couple now married, and currently a family with their new baby, Iris.

Slim Gypsy Baggage

From the SW coast of Michigan, Slim Gypsy Baggage originally came to be when performing musicians, Morgan Ingle (vocal/rhythm guitar) and Matt Smith (vocal/bass) were introduced to Cam Mammina (lead guitar). Morgan found her voice early in life and has been singing and performing ever since. She grew up in a musical family learning guitar from her father and honed her skills as a gifted singer/ songwriter. She has graced soundstages all across the Midwest fronting bands and as a solo act. Cam shreds! He has been playing guitar his whole life and plays with a soulful seasoned emotion. Mixing crunchy indie triphop licks, blues, funk, and surf rock sustains. Matt smoothes SGB out with his more country approach to the music. Although he has musical influences like Cash, Motown, and the Beatles, an interesting country rock vibe seems to show. Scott grew up with a large interest in recording and made four-part songs on his tape machine. As technology progressed so did Scott’s interest in loopers, beat machines, and synths. He learned the drums and played in bands all through college. It is the culmination of the group as a whole that creates their creative and vibrant sound.

The Snyders

Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, Southside Denny is a legendary bluesrocker and acoustic fingerstyle player with ten albums to his credit. He is also the father/bandleader of The Snyders. He began growing his reputation in the early 1980s being often associated with and seen on stage with numerous Chicago musical heros and influences such as Luther Allison, Sugar Blue, Pinetop Perkins to name a few. Denny performed as opening act for these and many other stellar acts such as Ray Charles, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins and what resembles a who’s who list of Chicago blues acts. In 1984 he and his band (Southside Denny and the Skintones) scored a regional hit with a protest song called ‘Ethanol Stinks.’ Before disbanding in 1989, the trio recorded two albums (including one with Sugar Blue on harp) and played blues club circuits throughout several Midwestern states and into the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Stereo Artifacts

Born in the the north woods of Emmet County and refined on the the streets of Petoskey comes the electro-art pop sounds of none other than Stereo Artifacts. Comprised of members who have graced the Bliss stage for many years in multiple iterations, the band includes the new age song stylings of Dan Campbell on the electric guitar, backed up by Joe Thompson on multiple keys, Johnny Allen performing all things synth, Lee Dyer on the low down bass, and Michael Binienda holding together the whole groove of the ensemble on the drums. The band is excited to announce that will have their new album “Leave It For The Crows” ready and available at the Blissfest!

Rocky Dawuni Slim Gypsy Baggage

That1Guy

With an extensive and amazing track record of unique and imaginative performances featuring his curious instrument and copious amounts of originality, Mike Silverman, a/k/a That1Guy, has set himself apart as a true one-of-a-kind talent that rivals any other artist currently in the entertainment industry. Averaging 150-200 shows a year all over North America and Canada, he has been a consistent favorite at such festivals as: Wakarusa, Electric Forest, Big Day Out, All Good Music Festival, Bella, High Sierra Music Festival, Summer Meltdown, Montreal Jazz Festival, and many more. He was also the ‘Tap Water Award’ winner at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His legendary collaboration and multiple tours with Buckethead, performing as The Frankenstein Brothers, has further cemented his virtuoso story as a creative visionary.

Tim & Myles Thompson

The unique relationship of a father and son cannot be argued nor explained, but when the relationship includes musical passion, virtuosity and showmanship —magic happens! Tim is a Nashville-based session player, singer/songwriter and the 2008 International Fingerstyle Champion. Music has always filled the Thompson home; unknowingly it inspired Myles to pick up the violin at the tender age of five! By the age of 12 he was studying music theory and improvising with skill beyond his years—it was clear that music would be his life. Today at the ripe old age of 20, Myles is also a prolific singer/songwriter and mandolin player. If you ask his dad or an audience member, they will tell you that Myles fancies himself as quite the comedian, most often at his dad’s expense.

The Way Down Wanderers

Equal parts fast-paced and soulful, five-piece alternative folk band from Chicago, The Way Down Wanderers, not only draw listeners in with their energy and originality but also captivate fans with their unique and touching story; Banjo player, Ben Montalbano and fiddle/mandolin player, Collin Krause, are half brothers who met each other for the first time five years ago. The two were shocked to find that not only were they both pursuing careers in music, but that they were each drawn to the same genres. In addition to their unexpected brotherly collaboration, the other band members’ dramatically diverse backgrounds in bluegrass, jazz, classical and rap music, blend together to form unique harmony vocals, soaring instrumentals, lively dynamics and standout melodies. 12

Tommy Tropic’s Buskermania!

The seeds of Buskermania! were planted at Bliss three decades ago when Tommy, an avid amatuer juggler, met Crazy Richard, the Midwest’s first busker going back to the 1970s. Crazy shared his knowlege freely and the two became lifelong friends. The cast of Buskermania are largely the third generation of Michigan buskers and they are the real McCoy! Jugglers, magicians, balloon twisters and more, from across the State presenting their art up-close and in your face as only street performers do! “A street show is better to a kid than any other kind because at the end, the child has not only met you, he has given you something. That makes you his friend!” –Crazy Richard, the Madd Juggler.

Whiskey Shivers

Barefoot, sleeveless and sweaty, Whiskey Shivers frontman and fiddle master, Bobby Fitzgerald, never stops smiling on stage. “All right! Let’s kick this thing in the face!” he barks, as the band tears into their stringed instruments at breakneck speed. It’s almost impossible to watch him perform more than a song or two without cracking a smile yourself. His exuberance is contagious, and it bleeds through into the music. Whether they’re playing at a backyard house party in Texas, a punk-rock dive bar or a sprawling country music festival, crowds take notice. People put down their phones, pick up their drinks and start dancing. “Whiskey Shivers isn’t just the five of us on stage, it’s everybody in the room,” Fitzgerald says. “We try to bring everybody into the moment and get them to realize there’s no wall between us and the crowd. We’re all in this together, and we’re all here to have a good time. We’ll do our best to facilitate it, but it takes all of us to make it happen. When you start to feel that, you can’t help but feel a little attachment and become invested in the show. You realize, ‘Oh, I’m here to have good time, too!’”

Blissfest Arts Recreation Center For those not familiar with the BARC project, the Blissfest Arts Recreation Center will be a low impact, sustainable tourism recreation center where families can experience arts and culture education integrated with sustainable living practices, ecology and agriculture to continue our circle of community. We are currently booking weddings, family reunions and special events for 2016. For more information: www.blissfest .org or call 231-348-7047. BLISSFEST ARTS RECREATION CENTER UPDATE Our new multi-purpose assembly building is completed “mostly” for Blissfest 2015! We are finished with the commercial kitchen, bathrooms, floors and all the trim and painting. It is ready to be used for the Blissfest Store and our BlissFeast Concession. The new building will also provide a gathering space for special events, performances, workshops and a general hangout for members and campers to jam when we are not in festival mode. The space will be available to the community for special events as well as our own activities. Special thanks to all the professionals, trades and contractors who helped make this building a reality and to the staff, board, site committee and membership who have labored from the start.

BLISSFEST SOLAR INITIATIVE It’s hard to miss the new 6KW array right next to the Main Stage. We are so pumped to be harvesting the sun. Thanks to the efforts of Steve and Tom of Leelanau Solar with help from Sturgeon Bay Electric, the Site Committee and staff the solar array was put online June 12, 2015. We have also established an online monitoring system where you can view the production figures. We will produce enough annual credits with this new grid tie system to offset the electricity used during the festival.

Right after festival we will continue to work on further development of the Blissfest Arts Recreation Center. We are ready to break ground on the permanent campground after finally receiving the DEQ construction permit in May for the 45-site rustic campground including 25 drive-in and 10 walk-in camp sites plus 10 campground cabins and a sanitation station. We are working on some creative designs for our additional cabins. You will notice the addition of 2 dome cabins this year. We have a grant in the works for additional kit cabins and some Yurts for 2016. The new Timber Frame and Gate Cabins are available for use as is the farm house.

Speaking of solar we have a new solar trailer to compliment last year’s BEAT (Blissfest Energy Alternative Trailer). The BEAT is supplying clean renewable energy for the 3rd stage and will be used in the community to educate and support other events with renewable energy. The new trailer is suppling solar energy to the new Michigan Stage. It’s called BlissFest Solar 3 and is the 3rd and much improved incarnation of our original portable solar power station started in 2005. We received $3000 from our winter solstice silent auction to help fund the solar initiative. You can donate to the Blissfest Solar Initiative and receive a Blissfest pin as a premium at Blissfest Store.

Our disc golf course has become a popular destination for the Disc Crowd. We have already had a few tournaments with more planned including during the Blissfest plus our 3rd annual Bliss Disc Camp September 11-13. Check out the cool Buzz Disc with the Blissfest logo on it available at the Bliss Store and at the Disc Golf Course booth. Thanks for the continued support by the local Bliss Discers and Big D’s Disc’n Supply in Cadillac. Disc Golf Hole sponsorships are still available. 26

NEW SOUND SYSTEM FOR THE ARTS CENTER Special thanks to Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation for their continued support of the Blissfest Arts Recreation Center. This year they funded our new sound system for the new building. The sound system will be used for special events, performances and at the new Michigan Stage during the festival. FORESTS FOR THE FUTURE We are in the final stages of acquiring 40 acres of woods on our east border. Forest For the Future is a non-profit sustainable harvest conservation organization that is dissolving and will gift the 40 acres to the Blissfest. Much cleanup is ahead of us as the forest was harvested last winter but we are excited to provide stewardship to this awesome piece of property.

The Blissfest Arts Recreation Center project and Solar Initiative is supported in part by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation

BlissStory:

The Chronicles of Bliss

Lesson 6 19901996

Last year BlissStory Lesson 5 concluded with our arrival and first festivals at our new and now permanent site here in Readmond Township. It is such a nostalgic and sweet process to look back at the early years of making Bliss at Blissfest. We’ve been looking back at the programs and recently digitized the old VHS tapes so it’s really quite a blast and heartwarming to see how we have progressed through the years, yet stayed true to our mission and passion for roots music. So we moved in 1988 arriving at an old farm that was offered to us by Howard Rice, a true Friend of Blissfest. The farm had been recently purchased by Howard from Dave Bell who was also a Friend of Blissfest so the place already had good energy and a great natural amphitheater to boot. It needed some love so we pulled up our sleeves and started making a home here. The BlissStory continues this year as we completed our 10th year anniversary in 1990 and second year at our current permanent site. We continued to dig in with more cleanup, some layout changes and amenities on the original 40 acre site. 1990 was our first Kid’s Parade. That same year a local Harbor Springs Radio Station, WLTO, presented the Back 40 Review which was a live Sunday morning in-studio show featuring local artists and the new Americana music recordings hosted by our own Dave Kelly radio personality AKA Dave Trautman. From 1988 until 1994 we leased the farm property from Howard Rice. Though major changes and infrastructure improvements did not start until after we purchased the property in 1995, the site gave us lots more room and allowed us to begin to see how we would like the lay of the land to be and identify improvements we would like to make. In those early years we established the Back 40 campground, stone 32

fire circle and musician’s camp. We were, of course, still pulling out lots of barbwire. In 1995, with a little money in the bank and Howard interested in purchasing another piece of property in the area, an agreement was reached to sell us the Festival Farm for $75,000. The purchase of the 40 acres allowed us to begin building infrastructure that would serve us into the future. While we established Second Stage under a large tent after our move, we were able to go ahead and build a more permanent stage and eventually a second stage dance floor and Kids Stage that later morphed into the Third Stage. We gradually improved Main Stage adding the classic front and sides and a green room to replace the tarps. Starting in 1988, Kirby began spelling out Blissfest with birch branches on the face of the stage, followed by the number of the festival and continued through Blissfest 11 in 1991. 1992 marked the first year the Main Stage had an intentional creative backdrop. Kelli Snively, Kirby’s sister and well known artist, painted a cow jumping over the moon and a few of her surrealistic signature fish swimming across the sky over the artist’s heads. Kelly proceeded to do backdrops for the next three years and gradually the painted backdrops became a solid fixture at our festivals.

1993 marked the first ever aerial photograph of the festival. Nan Hogan flew over and snapped the image which was made into a postcard with the caption “Does your mom know you’re here?” A few years later, Bob Humphrey and Wild Bill made it an annual ritual to get detailed aerial shots, which we used for site and festival planning as well as to sell as placemats at the festival store. Last year we used drones for the first time to do that task for us. Bob and Wild Bill appreciated finally getting to experience Bliss at the festival on Saturday. Our original vision for the festival began to manifest during the era from 1990-1996—that being the start of bringing artists from beyond our Michigan borders, expanding to national and eventually international artists. Part of the idea was to think globally and act locally in an effort to bring to and share with northern Michigan through an eclectic mix of roots and folk music from all over the world. This stage for many Blissfest fans to begin looking forward to the new and unique sounds of our annual discoveries as much or more than some of our more well-known headliners. In 1990, Greg Brown was the first out-of-state artist with national recognition to headline Blissfest. It started a trend that continues to this day. We continued to bring in national touring acts including: The Cobb Brothers and Catfish Keith (1991); Loudon Wainwright III, Farm Accident and our first international Canadian artist, Norman Miron (1992); The Bone Tones and Laketown Buskers (1993); John Gorka, Peter Ostroushko, Honey Boy Edwards and Jutta and the Hi-Dukes (1994); The Red Clay Ram-

blers, Robin and Linda Williams, the Cajun group, The Basin Brothers, and the French Canadian group Ad Vielle Que Pourra (1995); John Hartford, Andes Manta, Patty Larkin, and Donna the Buffalo (1996). I remember the Cobb Brothers family band showing up early on Wednesday back when nobody showed up that early. They arrived in a van and were all chewing tobacco—Dad down to the 14-year-old. They had t-shirts on that said, “The Cobb Brothers destination unknown.” In 1993 we booked Grammy winning singer-songwriter Don Henry, who turned out to be our first and only no show due to his wife delivering their child that weekend. Donna the Buffalo, our first Americana Jam Band, with their eclectic mix of Cajun, Reggae and American folk and roots music presented in a jam band format, quickly became a real Blissfest favorite. They are the only nationally touring group to grace the Blissfest three times. As a side note, 1996 was also the first year our program cover was in full color front and back. The early 90s was also the era that brought the Earth Community Empowerment programs to the Blissfest. Led by Will Michael and Kim Randazzo, classes, workshops and sweat lodge experiences were made available in the woods to men and women who wanted to add a spiritual and healing element to their Blissfest weekend. Some folks in recovery were very appreciative of these options and the Healing Arts Area continues today. That’s all for now. To be continued…

Compiled by Jim Gillespie and Will Michael—co-founders of the Blissfest. 33

SERVICE BOOTHS

International Experience: Founded in 2002, iE-USA is an educational exchange organization devoted to the growth of friendship and understanding among the people of the world by helping place students from all across the globe with host families in the U.S. They believe that learning about other cultures, languages and customs is the best way to eliminate international fears and prejudices. This unique immersion experience allows students to improve language skills, create lifelong friendships, boost personal confidence and communication skills and develop a deeper appreciation of the world we share. Usa.international-experience.net

Clothing Exchange and Tangled Up in Textiles: Take recycling to the next level. Exchange your cool threads with someone else’s cool threads. Clean clothes only. Check for open times at their booth.

Petoskey Planned Parenthood: Part of a national non-profit network of reproductive health care providers and advocates. They will be offering free family planning and personal hygiene items to help you have a safe and healthy Blissfest experience. www.plannedparenthood.org Concerned Citizens of Cheboygan and Emmet County: PIPE UP! PIPE OUT! SHUT DOWN LINE 5. Oil pipelines, older than the Mackinac Bridge, push up to 23 million gallons of oil and liquid natural gas through the Straits in one day. We are not here to protest, but to protect what we love. We are a unified campaign of non-profits, concerned citizens, tribal peoples, and business owners who say that we must not risk an oil spill in the Straits or the Inland Waterway. “Since 2009…significant accidents on oil and petroleum pipelines have shot up by almost 60 percent, roughly matching the rise in U.S. crude oil production.” (AP) Please visit our table! The North Country Trail is a public recreational trail that travels through seven states and passes only a half-mile from the Blissfest Farm! At 4,600 miles long, it is the longest and newest of the seven National Scenic Trails in the United States. Thirty-eight volunteer groups maintain the trail. The Harbor Springs Chapter takes care of the trail from Mackinaw City south to just east of Harbor Springs. Go to northcountrytrail.org for information on local chapters, maps, and how you can help. How to get there—From Division Road in front of Bliss Farm, walk east for a half-mile to Zmikly Road. Turn left (north) and follow Zmikly for another half-mile to Levering Road. You’ll see a register box on the north side of the road, and a well-worn path leading into the woods and your adventure. Follow the 2x6-inch blue paint blazes on trees and posts. Hike out and back, or spot a car at Wycamp Lake, Sturgeon Bay Trail, or West Lakeview Road. Walk all the way to Mackinaw City if you’re ambitious! Happy Hiking and Happy Bliss!

Luthier’s Tent: Instrument builders from Quinn’s Music in Big Rapids, Andy Kirby and Budd Greenman, along with fellow luthier Warren Liverance from Grosse Pointe Strings will be at the tent to share their instrument knowledge, consult or repair instruments in need. They will also have basic musician supplies. Quinn’s Music along with Chris Myers from Petoskey will also be hosting sessions for making your own Cigar Box Guitars at the tent. Cost for the make and take kit will be about $25-30. Ancestral Voices Drumsmith: Tree of Life Drum and Dance Society came out of the community’s love of drumming and dancing, the same kind of love that often brings drummers and dancers around the world together. They all know it just isn’t the same alone—these drums call to the community, they plead for dancers, and they build and sing when satisfied.

CELEBRATING TRIUMPHS OF THE CREATIVE SPIRIT. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to awaken your own creativity is to support the creativity of others. That’s why we’re so proud to give back to the people and organizations who inspire our artistic side – and we have been since 1962.

Over more than 50 years, Raymond James has become a leading patron of the arts communities and across the country. And today, it’s our privilege to continue that tradition of celebrating the creative spirit alongside you. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

We are proud to support the 35th Annual Blissfest Music Festival!

Ukes For Youth and Ukulele Club: Ukes for Youth is a continuing project that is available for schools, community groups and camps in the area. The project has been introducing this folk-arts string program to area youth using the baritone ukulele as the teaching instrument for several years now and has been a great outreach tool. The program is geared for children in grades 4th-5th up to adults and will include instrument care, basic chording techniques and song accompaniment. Blissfest also started a Ukulele Club at Red Sky Stage that meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. We share songs, do some group instruction and have lots of fun. Community Organization Arts, Events and Special Projects Support in 2014-2015: The Robert Emmet Society, Petoskey District Library, Crooked Tree Arts Center, Boyne Stroll the Streets, Petoskey Concerts in the Park, Harbor Springs Street Musique, Readmond Volunteer Firefighters Association, First Night Celebration, Legs Inn, Mackinaw Historical Society, Northern Michigan Cultural Alliance, Indian River Rhythm on the River, Woofstock, Petoskey Festival on the Bay and many other community groups. Dance Outreach: Blissfest’s cadre of old-time musicians and country dance callers help make dancing family fun during the fall, winter and spring season with regular monthly dances. In the summer they provide edutainment for local camps and events like the Mackinaw History Society Pioneers Days. The Up North Big Band carries on the tradition of big band swing music with regular monthly dances at Red Sky Stage in Petoskey. Blissfest is proud to help sponsor this great roots tradition. www.upnorthbigband.com Affiliations: Blissfest maintains a membership in our local Harbor Springs, Petoskey and Indian River Chambers of Commerce in support of cultural tourism and we are affiliated with Folk Alliance International, Ontario Conference of Folk Festivals and the Michigan Non-Profit Association.

Retreat Center: The Blissfest Farmhouse is ready to receive guests and artists. Two cabins and two domes are available and more cabins are scheduled next spring. The new campground will break ground right after the Festival and be available later this year. Spend some quiet time here at the Festival Farm with 160 acres to roam and explore. We are booking activities and special events for the 2016 season now. For more information, call the office and ask for Jim or visit www.blissfest.org. Red Sky Stage: This new venue in downtown Petoskey has fast become a favorite of locals and visitors alike.
