Shallow-water Shipwreck Kayaking Photo by Michala LaBelle
Trip Highlights Shallow Water Shipwrecks Enjoy the protected cove with calmer waters between the break wall and Crane Point in Lake Huron. Here, there are three shallow-water shipwrecks to explore and each can be easily reached from shore by kayak or paddle board. For this reason, it is a perfect choice for beginners or young paddlers. Kayak rentals are available from Harbor Beach Kayak. Harbor Beach Kayak • 1 Trescott St. • (989) 551-1314 • HarborBeachKayak.com
Trescott Pier

The pier has scenic views of Lake Huron and the sparkplug-style lighthouse, which is open for tours in the summer. The pier is also a perfect place for shore fishing and walking your dog; the north side of the pier is a dog-friendly beach. Trescott Pier • 1 Trescott St.
Historical Walking Tour The city has a walkable tour of 23 historical points of interest throughout the downtown area and the waterfront. Some of the highlights are the Community Theatre murals on the exterior of the building, the Frank Murphy Museum, and the Grice House Museum. Port Austin is a welcoming beach village at the tip of the Thumbcoast on Lake Huron. The natural beauty of the rocky shorelines and sandy beaches make it perfect for both outdoor adventurers and those looking for a peaceful waterfront getaway. Photo, Turnip Rock by Vito Palmisano Photography
Port Crescent State Park Day-Use Area
Trip Highlights Turnip Rock This natural geological formation on the shores of Lake Huron is an iconic landmark known for its unique turnip-like shape. The land above the high watermark is private property, so the only way to get to this must-see attraction is by water. Two options are paddling or taking a boat excursion. The paddle is considered intermediate-advanced and is about 7 miles round-trip. We recommend contacting a local tour operator for lake and weather conditions. PAK’s Backyard Beer Garden Pak’s is a hot spot for recreation and fun! Their outdoor beer garden has live music in the summer and great food. A surf-style boutique and kayak rentals are onsite. Be sure to visit Pak’s Garage across the street for bike rentals and shop the local artisan space. 119 E. Spring St. • (989) 551-0444 • PaksBackyard.com 85ten Boutique Hotel & Events
The Village Green The Village Green is a collection of eight seasonal pop-up shops at the farmers’ market in the heart of the village. They host fun events and live music at this unique shopping experience. Typically, the shops are open Thursday and Friday, 3 - 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 - 1 p.m. Visit their Facebook page, Facebook.com/PortAustinVillageGreen, for hour updates and special events. 17 W. Grab a chair or blanket and walk from porch to porch, listening to the different musical styles of over 35 musicians from 24 porches. The event is typically in the afternoon, but we recommend arriving early and going to the farmers’ market at the Village Green. June 22 • PortAustinMusic.com

LIGHTHOUSES Lighthouses are an integral part of maritime heritage, with many that are still operable and climbable. The panoramic views atop the tower are incredible and have a profound sense of awe. It’s worth the trip to see all of them because each is unique with its history and architecture.
You can stay overnight in a bunk-style room at Michigan’s oldest lighthouse, the Fort Gratiot Light. At Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse, you can be an Assistant Lighthouse Keeper and stay in the keeper’s house for a week.

Superstitions have historically played a part in theatre; here are some notable ones:
• Saying “Break a Leg” is indeed good luck. • Whistling backstage is bad luck. • A single light left on the stage when the theatre is empty is said to ward off mischievous spirits that may inhabit the theatre. • Giving flowers after the performance, instead of before, is good luck.

ECO-TOURISM Experience the natural beauty of Michigan’s Thumbcoast on an eco-tourism adventure like no other. Our region has over 80 parks with a seamless blend of diverse landscapes and wildlife habitats to explore while embracing sustainable practices. What types of landscapes can you expect to see? In the south, there are rare natural communities along the 40-mile St. Clair River, a shoreline comprised of wetlands, a freshwater delta, and lake plain prairies. As you head north, there are mixed forested trails, glacial beaches, farmlands, and Marshall sandstone formations. At the tip of the Thumbcoast there are unique limestone rock formations, sandy dunes, and elevated ridges with panoramic views. Photo, Birds of Prey Observatory, Port Crescent State Park Day-Use Area

ROCK HUNTING
s s a l G h c a e B d n a
Go on a serene adventure, strolling the sandy beaches and viewing colorful fragments of history. The state stone of Michigan, the Petoskey stone, is a cherished find if you can spot it. It is a fossilized coral commonly found here and known for its distinct honeycomb pattern. Another admired find on the coast is beach glass, a reverse gem made by man but refined by nature. The glass is worn down over time by the movement of water and from rubbing against the rocks and sand.
TIPS & FUN FACTS
Petoskey Stone found by Tim Brown in Port Huron
1 Orange and red are the rarest beach glass colors to find. 2 It can take 50 - 100 years for beach glass to form. 3 The best time to find beach glass is after a big storm, low water, or when the winter ice starts to break up. 4 The meaning of the Petoskey Stone originates from the Native American name, Pet-O-Sega, or rays of the rising sun. 5 Gold can be found in Michigan and recreational panning is allowed with restrictions. Find out more at Michigan.gov, keywords: gold panning 6 Diver Tim Brown found a giant Petoskey stone and a Native American net sinker made from a Petoskey stone carbon dated by Cranbrook Museum as being circa 1000 AD.

The first day of fall is Sunday, September 22, 2024. The colorful change of seasons is spectacular along the shores of the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. Typically, the trees will show changes by mid-September; however, peak color change will most likely occur by mid-October. Grab a pumpkin-spiced latte and make plans to get up early to see the vibrant colors during the sunrise. Photo, Lake Huron Roadside Park, Port Sanilac
