2014 Report to the Community

“To give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.”

– Douglas Adams

World-Class Healthcare Hometown Caring

W

e are so pleased to share our journey with you. This year’s Charlevoix Area Hospital report to the community focuses on more than facts and figures, more than charts and graphs. It tells you why we are here - through the stories and quotes of patients and family members, of staff and community. Many are touching, heart-warming tributes to the time, attention and care our patients and their families have received from our staff members. They have inspired us and touched our hearts. We know they will touch yours as well. While we enjoy looking back at our year, our aim is to always look forward. Healthcare is changing, and changing fast – and yet our commitment to you remains unchanged. We will always strive to uphold our mission to provide accessible, high quality, compassionate healthcare services to improve the health of the communities we serve. We have a history of doing just that. Our goal is to remain your choice for healthcare in northwestern Michigan, building on our reputation for world-class healthcare and hometown caring. We continue to provide our surrounding communities with a wealth of benefits. Some of these include charity care, patient accounts that weren’t paid, free preventive health education and expanded monthly low-cost screenings, community contributions, in-kind donations, and many other local events and activities. We are embracing new challenges, new technology, and new partnerships. We have begun renovation projects that include the brand new Sarah M. Foster Chemotherapy Infusion Center, completely renovated registration and admissions areas, and

expanded facilities and services at Boyne Area Medical Center. Just recently we have received approval from the State of Michigan to begin construction of a new surgical suite and supporting services. This will allow for an estimated 550 additional surgeries a year. All of these exciting new projects enhance our healthcare to you, the ones we are here to serve. Of course, the core of our mission hasn’t changed because our commitment hasn’t changed. From Board members to staff members, from surgeons to nurse assistants, from technicians to trainers, our commitment is to you, our local communities. It is our hope that the work we do every day will ensure that each of our patients can live life to the fullest - and continue to share their stories.

We are… PROUD TO PARTNER WITH MUNSON HEALTHCARE

As one of Munson Healthcare’s eight hometown hospitals, we share ideas and resources to make care safer and more affordable. From the beginning of our relationship, we’ve been encouraged to maintain our individuality, but we share one clear vision - giving northern Michigan top quality care. As partners, we not only benefit from achieving economies of scale on equipment and supplies, we are also able to share information and collaborate on clinical and operational practices. Both Munson Healthcare and Charlevoix Area Hospital have individual strengths. We’ve been able to learn from each other and develop a mutually beneficial regional approach to the delivery of healthcare. As the northernmost partner with Munson, our medical staff includes family practitioners, internal medicine specialists, general and orthopaedic surgeons, obstetricians, ophthalmologists, pediatricians and a radiologist. As a regional, nonprofit healthcare system, Munson Healthcare provides direct access to more than 950 physicians and providers, representing more than 50 specialties, greatly increasing our access to world-class healthcare. Just as we partner with Munson Healthcare, they also partner with larger healthcare systems for certain advanced patient services, clinical training, and business applications. Some of these partners include Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Michigan State University, Trinity Health, Spectrum Health and the University of Michigan Health System. So you see, we’re all in this together – and we look forward to a great and growing relationship with our friends to the south.

We are… EXCITED ABOUT OUR STATE-OF-THE-ART CHEMOTHERAPY AND INFUSION CENTER

The Sarah M. Foster, MD Chemotherapy and Infusion Center is a reality! This long-awaited project is a welcome and very important component to cancer treatment and recovery close to home. In designing the Center, our Circle of Strength cancer support group as well as a focus group were consulted for their valuable input. As a result, each space is furnished with special infusion chairs which recline, heat and massage. And the view? It can’t be beat. Peaceful and calming, the healing waters of beautiful Lake Michigan are right outside each floor-to-ceiling window.

You’re invited to join us on Wednesday, February 11th at 5:30 pm for our ribbon cutting ceremony and an opportunity to take a tour of this exciting new addition to our hospital! “I WANT TO BE WITH MY PEOPLE” This past July, our very first chemotherapy patient finished her course of treatment. Jeanne Moblo hails from East Jordan and after being diagnosed, was relieved when she discovered she could receive chemotherapy treatment right here in Charlevoix - so close to her home. Early on in the process, Jeanne had traveled to Chicago for a second opinion. Discouraged by the confirmation of her diagnosis, being away from home left Jeanne upset and unsettled. In tears, she made a phone call to the staff at CAH. When she recounted the story weeks later, she remembered saying to the hospital infusion staff member over the phone, “I want to be with my people, and you’re my people.” She added fondly, “Charlevoix Area Hospital was great from the start. It was like home and the staff was like family.” On Jeanne’s final day of chemotherapy treatment, staff gathered to congratulate her, wish her well, and look on excitedly as she rang the celebration bell, indicating her last round of chemo had been completed. Stories like Jeanne’s remind us why our work is so important. It is not just about the services and procedures performed here. It’s about making people feel special. It’s about the brand of compassionate, hometown care we’re known for.

We’ve always believed in giving back. Our commitment to the health of our communities is evidenced by the many events and programs we sponsor, including: • • • • • •

Wellness Wednesdays (monthly in three communities) School Nurses (9 school systems) First Aid Tents at Community Events Childbirth Preparation Classes American Red Cross Blood Drives Area Business Health Screenings

Freedom From Smoking Clinics Fit-4-Life for Kids Fit-4-Life for Adults Circle of Strength Cancer Support Group Circle of Strength Mammogram and Breast Health Program

We are… PROUD OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUR SCHOOL NURSES

Our very successful School Nurse Program was one of only five programs from across the country named a “Program of Promise” by the Hospital Charitable Services Awards, a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. It recognizes hospitals whose commitment to their community has led to innovative efforts to improve community health and increase access to healthcare education and services. Our Charlevoix Area Hospital School Nurse Program has placed four registered nurses in nine local school systems - where previously there were none - at no cost to the schools. Through the dedicated hard work of the school nurses, not only has the medical safety in the schools greatly increased, but students have been given the opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime. Kathy Jacobsen, Director of Community Health Education, believes her staff deserves all the credit. “One of the most rewarding successes has been the dramatic decrease in ‘chronically absent students’. Eight out of the nine school systems served by the program have seen a measurable increase in their daily attendance rates since our school nurses came on board. This award reflects their hard work in the school setting with the most medically fragile students. I am fortunate to support such innovative and dedicated nurses who make a lasting difference every day.”

We are… REACHING OUT TO OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Our monthly low-cost health screening program has gotten so popular, we just knew it was time to expand! We have tripled our reach for Wellness Wednesday and now our neighboring Boyne City and East Jordan communities are able to take advantage of the same great program that has made such an impact on the Charlevoix community. The health screening costs just $15 and only takes about 15 minutes. It includes a complementary consultation with one of our nurses to discuss the results of each test – full cholesterol panel, blood pressure, blood sugar level, body muscle and fat percentages. A1C testing is also available for diabetic patients for an additional $5. There is no appointment necessary - just stop in anytime from 8-11 a.m. at one of our three convenient locations: CHARLEVOIX Charlevoix Area Hospital 14700 Lake Shore Drive (1st Weds each month)

BOYNE CITY Boyne Area Medical Center 223 N. Park Street (2nd Weds each month)

EAST JORDAN Jordan Valley Rehabilitation Center 100 Main Street #9 (3rd Weds each month)

PROUD OF OUR COMMITMENT TO MOMS AND BABIES Charlevoix Area Hospital received a letter from the Department of Health & Human Services thanking us for participating in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2013 survey of Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (CDC mPINC survey). Eighty-three percent of facilities in the nation that provide maternity services responded to the survey. The mPINC Total Score for Charlevoix Area Hospital was 87 out of 100. Across Michigan, the average score was 73 and the national average score was 75. Getting each and every baby off to the best start possible is very important to us. We’re proud of our high score – it reflects our commitment to even our smallest patients!

IMPROVING OUR WEBSITE We have been working diligently behind the scenes to bring you a new and improved website – and we’re happy to announce that it’s nearly ready to launch! Finding information quickly and efficiently is a priority, and the new site not only accomplishes this goal, but also provides the opportunity to view the site on phones and tablets – not just laptops and desktop computers. That’s important in today’s world of people on the move. Being able to connect to the information you want – whenever you want it – will be easier than ever. The improved site will be available very soon, so be sure to take the opportunity to visit us at www.cah. org and see what’s new. (And while you’re at it, don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook!)

LENDING A HAND AT COMMUNITY EVENTS From 4th of July fireworks celebrations in Boyne City to the Venetian Festival in Charlevoix to Freedom Fest in East Jordan, we’re there! Our dedicated staff has a history of helping out, doing our best to keep residents and visitors safe while they’re having fun!

TOUCHED BY THE BIG HEARTS OF OUR LOCAL CHILDREN Mrs. Krista Jarema was working with the Camp Read Program this past summer, helping elementary-aged children with their reading skills. But they wanted a project – something fun, but something that would also help people. After talking it over, they decided on a lemonade stand. But this wasn’t to be any ordinary lemonade stand. The proceeds from it were going to be really important, so it needed a lot of exposure – a lot of foot traffic. They decided the Charlevoix Farmer’s Market was just the right venue to launch their plan. The lemonade stand was such a success that the children were able to purchase six $20 gas cards with their proceeds. The gas cards were each accompanied by a handwritten letter, dated and signed from one of the children. The package was given to Charlevoix Area Hospital to help six patients who might be in need of a little extra help. This labor of love from some very kind-hearted children and their teacher was both creative and generous. And our guess is those precious letters were even more valuable to each patient than the gas cards.

GRATEFUL FOR YOUR CONTINUED GENEROSITY This past summer, the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation received a call from Carol, a member of a weekly ladies golf league, explaining that this group does a special event each year to raise money to fight cancer. For years they had given their donations to a national organization, but this year they decided they wanted to “keep the money at home.” They had heard about the Circle of Strength and the Cancer Support Fund at the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation that is used to assist local residents with the cost of mammograms and, if needed, cancer treatment and they knew this was exactly the kind of program they wanted to support. The Boyne Angels, as they call themselves, went all out on the day of the golf outing. They decorated their golf carts and many dressed up as angels – all in the name of fun and raising awareness. And raise awareness they did! A young woman they met on the course stopped to talk with them and asked what all the fuss was about. When they explained what they were raising money for, the woman was visibly moved, and she then shared her own story. She had gone in for a routine mammogram at Charlevoix Area Hospital. After the initial results were read, she was told there was a concerning spot for which she needed a more comprehensive mammogram. Understandably, she had been upset, but was also worried because her insurance didn’t cover an additional mammogram and she just couldn’t afford it. Luckily, the story didn’t end there. The Hospital’s staff member made a couple of calls and told her there was a special fund that would cover the cost of the necessary additional mammogram for her. With assistance from the Foundation’s Cancer Support Fund, generously supported with gifts from individuals, families, and our own Circle of Strength Cancer Support Group, she was able to schedule the second mammogram. She was relieved – but even more importantly, the additional mammogram showed that she did indeed have an advanced stage of cancer. She reported to the golfers that she had gone through surgery and treatment and is now cancer free. It is moments like these – big and small – that remind us why the spirit of giving is so important. What we do truly matters, and has a real impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. Sometimes the impact is immediately visible, sometimes it takes years to see the results, and sometimes, just sometimes, it surprises us at the moment we least expect it. Thank you – and thank you to groups like the Boyne Angels – for helping us make a real difference in the lives of those we serve in our community.

We are… READY FOR YOU 24/7

The Hospital’s fully equipped emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by an ER physician and expert nursing staff. Patients who require immediate treatment for illness or injury can be confident they will receive the compassionate care they need, close to home. And, when an emergency requires more sophisticated trauma intervention, the ambulance bay and nearby airport make transfers faster and easier than ever before. Other minor ailments, less serious injuries, and health concerns that occur during evening and weekend hours when area doctors’ offices are closed can be treated in our Urgent Care Center, located in the Hospital’s emergency department. Charlevoix Area Hospital is fortunate to have the tools, technology and talent to conduct a wide variety of tests and analyses. Our onsite imaging department and well-equipped hospital laboratory provide mammograms, ultrasound, MRI, CT, x-rays and diagnostic lab tests, making it quick and convenient to treat our patients.

We are… RELIANT ON OUR VOLUNTEERS

The cheerful smile of a volunteer is often one of the first things you’ll see when you come in the main entrance of Charlevoix Area Hospital. You may notice our volunteers and Guild members staffing our Gift Shop or providing assistance at our information desk. Behind the scenes, they may prepare mailings, help at the Foundation, visit patients, assist in admissions, help visitors find their way, or any of a multitude of other important services. More than 60 dedicated volunteers give generously of their time and talent to make our hospital a success. Whether they work every week or on an “on-call” basis, whether they have been with us for many years or are new on the scene, each volunteer is a vital component to the care we provide. Together, they contribute more than 5,000 hours of service a year. Our wonderful volunteers make such a difference for patients, families and visitors. We couldn’t get along without them!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to our own Irene Fall who was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” by the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates–North Central District. Irene has faithfully volunteered in our Cardiac Rehab department for the past 13 years. She has donated her time and talents to serve our hospital with her unique caring style, enabling her to connect with many patients. Irene’s energy and complete dedication to the Cardiac Rehab program and staff have made her a valuable asset and we are so grateful for her commitment.

OUR GUILD IS INVALUABLE Members of the Guild (many of whom also actively take on volunteer jobs within the Hospital) raise funds to purchase needed equipment and provide those extra touches that enhance our patients’ experience. Meeting monthly, they plan and execute several fundraising events and operate our wonderful Gift Shop. This year, they have made a very generous pledge to donate $50,000 toward our capital projects, including the new chemotherapy/infusion center, and expansion of Boyne Area Medical Center, one of our primary care facilities.

Our birthing center is designed to provide an intimate, family-centered childbirth experience. You can labor, deliver, recover and remain in a private room throughout your stay – and have your loved ones with you too. Each room offers a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, private bath with whirlpool, comfy, homelike furnishings, and the most advanced medical equipment to ensure your safety and your baby’s well-being.

We are… CARING FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS

Thanks to the expertise of our excellent doctors, and well-equipped and staffed hospital, we’re able to meet many of the primary and specialty care needs of our area residents, right here, close to home: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Birthing Center Cardiovascular Services Diagnostic Services Ear, Nose & Throat Emergency Services General Surgery Internal Medicine Lymphedema Services Neurosurgical Services Obstetrics/Gynecology Occupational Health Oncology Ophthalmology Orthopaedic Surgery

• • • • • • • • • • • • •

Pediatric Care Physical Therapy Plastic Surgery Radiology Rehabilitation Services Respiratory Care Respite Care Sleep Center Sports Medicine Surgical Services Swing Bed Services Urgent Care Women’s Health

I continue to be amazed by the generous spirit of our communities. As Charlevoix and Northern Antrim Counties grow and change, Charlevoix Area Hospital works to keep pace. Recognizing that change was needed to better meet the needs of our patients, CAH has focused on delivering the right care, in the right place to improve the health of our communities. Over the past year, that has meant: •

Serving the community through multiple outreach programs, which benefit a wide spectrum of people, including our youth, our friends and families touched by cancer and other serious illnesses, ourselves and each other through access to more preventative measures and health education classes. Opening a new Chemotherapy-Infusion Center to provide close-tohome treatment options. Expanding where our patient needs are – primary care in Boyne City, and up next, Surgery and Laboratory services in Charlevoix.

• •

It takes many contributions from individuals, families, service organizations, and businesses big and small to help the Hospital develop new programs, expand some of our facilities, and renovate others. Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation has always been proud of our local support and the positive impact we’ve made in return. The buzz phrase, “pay it forward,” is evident at Charlevoix Area Hospital, where for almost 100 years, our donors and volunteers have given generously to improve the Hospital for future generations in our area. Our local residents and visitors have done it once again this year and, we hope, for many more. Thank you and may you have a wonderful year filled with love, health, and happiness.

We are… “THE BEST KEPT SECRET”

Why do many of our patients go out of their way to come to Charlevoix Area Hospital? Perhaps it is because they have consciously made the choice for the “world-class healthcare and hometown caring” we have become known for. In October, a couple from Sault St. Marie, Ontario, drove all the way to our hospital in Charlevoix to take advantage of our low-cost Wellness Wednesday health screening program. When asked why they would drive over 100 miles each way, especially when they had medical coverage in their own country, their answer was simple. “We came here several months ago when we were on vacation in Petoskey. It was such valuable information and we learned so much, we wanted to come back. We found out that simple changes could make a positive impact on our health. So we wanted to compare our results with our first visit to see if our numbers reflected those changes - and they did!” And then there was the woman who had been in a serious accident in Alanson. She had several broken bones and was in a great deal of pain. When her son brought her to our Emergency Department, we asked why she hadn’t called an ambulance. She said it was because they would have taken her to the nearest hospital, and she wanted to come to Charlevoix Area Hospital instead. Why do women choose to have their babies in our birthing center? We’ve been told more than once that we’re the “best kept secret” for new moms. We’ve even been told it’s like going to a spa. (Childbirth? Like going to a spa? We love that answer!) Perhaps it’s because our obstetricians listen. They are known not only for their outstanding skills, but also for their willingness to provide the kind of birth experience that women want – with flexibility and compassionate caring for each individual. Why have so many people chosen Charlevoix Area Hospital for their chemotherapy or infusion treatments? Over and over again, we are told it’s the staff. The one-on-one care our patients receive here makes them feel special – makes them feel like they matter. And they do. Yes, we all have a choice where we receive our healthcare. It’s been said that we know what we do, and we do it well. And apparently our patients agree.
