Lighthouses Galore From Mackinac to Charlevoix

ighthouses are a navigational tool for mariners, a point of reference in travel on and off land, and a thing of beauty and history. In Northern Michigan, there are many working lighthouses that assist boaters. And here you’ll find historic lighthouses where lighthouses keepers once lived and worked that have been preserved, restored and are open to visitors. From the Straits of Mackinac to Charlevoix, this part of Up North Michigan has a variety of lighthouses. Many of these elegant structures were built in the 1800s and are now maintained by volunteers and historical organizations. Tour historic lighthouses and get a glimpse of what life was like for the lighthouse keeper and his family. The keeper at McGulpin Point moved his family to nearby Mackinaw City in the winter months so his children could go to school but he traveled back to the lighthouse once a week on snowshoes to report on the lake and ice conditions. See the living quarters where the keeper’s families raised

children and view Lake Michigan from the top of the elegant towers. Lake Michigan can be calm and glass-like or wild and turbulent just as it was in the lighthouse keeper’s day. Some things don’t change. Two Northern Michigan lighthouses, McGulpin Point Lighthouse and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, are open for tours. Just down the hillside from McGulpin Point Lighthouse is McGulpin Rock first noted by French Explorers in 1615. Other working Northern Michigan can be seen from the water. In Harbor Springs, the Little Traverse Lighthouse can be seen from the water and from the shoreline around Little Traverse Bay. It is located on the private property of Harbor Point and can be toured every few years during an event organized by the Harbor Springs Historical Society. The last event was in 2011. Still gracing the Northern Michigan waters as they have for more than a century, these lighthouses are a special Up North treat. ■

Concièrge (con-si-urzh') comes from the French word which means “to serve.” In European hotels, the concierge is the person who gives help—advice, local information and special attention to every guest. In northern Michigan, this high standard of hospitality is part of our warm welcome. Concièrge is your own special guide to a wonderful time during your stay.

The Cover Story

he cover of this issue of Concierge is “Field of Dreams” by Michigan artist Kathleen Cavanagh. Birch trees frame summer blossoms in this classic illustration of Northern Michigan’s beauty. Like much of Cavanagh’s work, it conveys both the tranquility and vibrancy of Michigan’s nature, capturing the feeling of being “Up North.” Originally from Grosse Pointe, Cavanagh now divides her time between Ann Arbor and Harbor Springs. Her father and grandfather were both painters and sculptors and creativity is part of her heritage. Cavanagh has studied with Virginia Thibodeaux, Jean Lackey, and at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. Numerous workshops with renowned painters helped her develop her own style in oil on canvas that invites one to feel the beauty and expression of the work and to enjoy moments that are unique to Northern Michigan and universal at once.

Cavanagh prefers to paint En Plein Air, especially near Little Traverse Bay. She feels blessed with an endless supply of subject matter ranging from Cross Village sunsets across Lake Michigan, to boldly colorful NM’s resting on their moorings and cushioned in the morning fog. Cavanagh utilizes a rich color palette that breathes life into her landscapes. From painting a serene Michigan summer sky, to the sailboats underway, Cavanagh enjoys the creative challenge to produce works that offer both memories of fine days and the promise of more to come. Her work clearly reflects her love of place and her enthusiasm to share it, both with those who know the magic of Northern Michigan and those who still have the chance to discover it. Cavanagh’s paintings are available at Belle Aquatic and Sky Iris, both on State Street in Harbor Springs. ■ Concierge | August–September 2016

The Oden State Fish Hatchery

he Oden State Fish Hatchery is one of Michigan’s six state hatcheries. The original Oden State Fish Hatchery was established in 1921 and continued to operate until 2002. The hatchery complex just north of the original hatchery was completed in 2002 and is one of the most advanced fish culture facilities of its kind. This fish hatchery raised both brown and rainbow trout. This facility has a brown and rainbow trout broodstock station and is a major rearing facility for those two species. The Oden facility keeps broodstock (fish that are kept to produce fertilized eggs) for three strains of brown trout and one strain of rainbow trout. This broodstock produces 2-3 million eggs per year for Michigan’s hatchery system. After hatching, the fish, called fry, are put into tanks. Once they have reached 3-5 inches in length, the fish are called fingerlings and are moved to covered, outdoor raceways. At 7-9 inches in length, the fish, now called yearlings, are pumped from the raceways into a special fish planting truck where they are then taken to their new ‘homes.’ The water used to grow the fish comes

from five wells located on the property. Each day, more than four million gallons of water are used in the rearing process. The old hatchery has been transformed into a Great Lakes watershed explanation area featuring a Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center that includes a replica of a fish transportation rail car. The rail car has a historic recreation of the interior of the original rail car, a watershed interpretative area and an interactive computer with hands-on learning opportunities concerning watersheds and other aspects of fish culture. A trout stream was constructed in the old raceway complex and shows the public how a degraded stream can be repaired. It includes a viewing chamber to allow people to see what happens underwater in a stream. While touring the hatchery, make sure to bring dimes to purchase fish feed from dispensing machines so you can feed the trout in the pond along the way! The facility includes daily tours during the summer along paved pathways. For more information about the Oden Fish Hatchery, call 231-347-4689. The hatchery is located on US 31 in Oden. ■

Swimming in Northern Michigan

liding through the crystal clear water on a warm summer day is not the same as doing a back stroke in the hotel pool. Swimming in one of Northern Michigan’s many lakes in the summer months is a pastime that can’t be missed. So where is a good place to do lake laps? There are a variety of settings that are waiting for you to dive in. In the Petoskey area, you will often find teenagers jumping off the break wall and swimming back to do it again. The Petoskey State Park is a premier swimming spot that can offer gentle water or wild waves. The shallow beach area is great for young swimmers or water walkers. Just north of Petoskey on Crooked Lake, the small beach area along U.S. 131 is the place to swim in warm, inland lake waters. There is a small beach area and a wide-open lake to swim in from the beach. Harbor Springs has two city beaches and both are great for swimming. The Zorn Park Beach has lifeguards and swimming rafts. Jump in the cool waters from the raft and head out into the harbor. This beach is the starting point for the Coastal Crawl, held the first Sunday of August, where swimmers escorted by kayaks head to Harbor Point and back. The Zoll Street Beach in Harbor Springs is a tiny one, a favorite for family and dog

owners. This beach is a great starting point to do lake laps along the waterfront parallel to Wequetonsing. Middle Village Beach near Good Hart has a long, wide Lake Michigan beach that swimmers love. The water is clear and shallow near shore. Many swimmers swim their laps along this beach. Sturgeon Bay might be the favorite for swimmers because it is gorgeous. Take your pick depending on the day from flat waters to body surfing waves. Families love this beach because the water is clear and inviting. Charlevoix also has four city beaches, two each on Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. Depot Beach on Lake Charlevoix has warmer waters than Lake Michigan and you will often see swimmers heading out into the lake in late May. Ferry Beach, also on Lake Charlevoix, has a gently sloping sandy swimming area is a popular beach for parents and their children. Ferry Beach offers lifeguards so swimmers love it. Michigan Beach on Lake Michigan is often a popular early morning or late evening spot for lake laps. Lifeguards are on duty during the day during the summer. Mount McSauba also on Lake Michigan has a wide sandy swimming area. Lake Charlevoix’s warmer waters can mean a longer swimming season. Swimming in Boyne City is so special that the community hosts a swimming camp. The non profit organization that operates the camps teaches dozens and dozens of children how to swim each summer. Northern Michigan’s weather doesn’t allow for year ’round swimming—the water is too cold much of the year. When the weather isn’t conducive to a dip in the lake, head to the Harbor Springs Community Pool at the Harbor Springs High School. ■ Concierge | August–September 2016

Bear River Valley Recreation Area

his 36 acre, 1.5 mile long valley along the Bear River in Petoskey is truly spectacular. Having just undergone a $2.4 million face lift, the Bear River Valley Recreation Area is filled with natural beauty and things to do. All located within the city of Petoskey, this expansive park features steep terrain, unpaved and paved trails, forests, and boardwalks. Activities include biking, hiking, walking, fishing, picnicking with two shelters, restrooms, events and performance areas, stairs down to the river, a footbridge across the river, nature watching, and whitewater kayaking in the Lower Peninsula’s only whitewater park. It is a gem of park. This is a downtown park and is the envy of many downtown business districts. Just a two-block walk from the Gaslight District, the Bear River Valley Recreation Area is a great place for lunch, a long walk along the river, or kayaking through a variety of river terrain. The Bear River Valley Recreation Area is not a landscaped and developed park area but is instead a natural area filled with spectacu-

lar steep bluffs, natural forests, grassy open spaces, and local plant species. What once was a gentle, flowing river loved by canoeists has been transformed into a rockin’ and rollin’ ride along the Bear River. A number of features were added to the river including large boulders, roll overs, ledges, logs, and tight squeezes during the renovation of the Recreation Area. Moving quickly below steep bluffs lined with trees, river riders find it hard to believe that the city surrounds the park. The river drops through an elevation of 80’ during the whitewater run with a rapids classification of 2.5 on a scale of 1.6. During periods of rain, the river can turn into a 3-4 class rapids. The rapids begin near the Sheridan Street bridge and drops three miles through the spectacular park and ends at the mouth of the Bear River on the Little Traverse Bay. There are numerous put in locations along the river. Entrances to this park are located on West Lake Street, Sheridan Street and several adjacent neighborhoods. There is ample parking. Kayak and whitewater rafting concessions may be added in the future. ■

Cruise the Inland Waterway

summertime cruise on the Inland Waterway is the perfect way to spend a summer day. This spectacular waterway covers 38.2 miles of lakes and rivers from just outside of Petoskey to Cheboygan. Along the way boaters will find state parks, great areas for fishing and swimming, wide-open waters for skiing, as well as ports of call for fuel and food. Many boaters begin their Inland Waterway tour on Pickerel Lake or Crooked Lake in Conway. Rental boats are available on Crooked Lake for a day’s journey. From Crooked Lake, the waterway moves along the river through a set of locks and into Alanson. This is a great place for an ice cream cone or baked goods before heading down the river to Burt Lake. Burt Lake’s body of water can be calm and inviting or wild and rough. On a hot summer day, leaving the calm no-wake waters of the Crooked River and then entering Burt Lake means it is time to accelerate to build up some wind for cooling off. Pass across the water to Indian River and anchor off of Burt Lake State Park. Sandy beaches, shallow areas per-

fect for swimming and plenty of picnic tables are available. The journey continues through the Indian River into Mullett Lake, the largest fresh water lake in the state. This long and wide body of water is the place to anchor for some fishing or swimming. Aloha State Park is located on Mullet Lake and this park has camping, picnicking, canoe rentals and more. Boaters leave Mullett Lake and enter the Cheboygan River for the last leg of the Inland Waterway’s journey. Another set of locks bring boaters down to the level of nearby Lake Huron. The Cheboygan River meanders through Cheboygan where dining, lodging, shopping, and more are available. The nearly 40 mile journey ends as boaters enter Lake Huron in Cheboygan. With Mackinac Island just a short hop away, many visitors will want to visit this historic spot before heading back home. Pack the cooler, picnic basket and bring the sun tan lotion and fishing pole for a great day on the Inland Waterway! ■ LAKE HURON
