2016 Summer Workshops We are excited to offer a full line-up of adult workshops in a variety of mediums and ability levels in Petoskey and Traverse City. Register before March 31 and receive a 10% early bird discount!

Petoskey Workshops EXPLORING WATERCOLOR Instructor: Susan Lingg Medium: Watercolor June 11, 1:00-4:00 pm* $65 Members/$105 Non-Members This 3-hour class exploring the medium of watercolor through small studies is for everyone from beginner to intermediate painters. Students will start by accessing their creative side through thought, breath, and focus. They will then feel and watch the power of color through a quick study of primary and secondary colors by painting two small studies. Students will play with the fluidity of watercolor in the use of glazes/washes, salt and the splatter technique, and study negative spaces. Everyone will leave with at least two finished pieces. All supplies will be provided by the instructor. *This workshop will also be offered in our Traverse City location on September 10.

THE FIGURE IN PASTELS Instructor: Margaret Dyer Medium: Pastels June 17-19, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $435 Members/$475 Non-Members Learn the traditional pastel painting technique. Working with live models and photos, students will explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color, and pas足tel application. Emphasis will be on developing form using light and shadow, simplify足ing the subject into three values. For those wanting to speed up and become less tight in their work, this is an excellent class to take.

Students do not need prior pastel experi足ence. Some drawing would be helpful, but not imperative.

IMPACT! Instructor: Ardith Goodwin Medium: Acrylic June 20 & 21, 9:00 am-4:00 pm* $300 Members/$340 Non-Members Impact! is a two-day immersive workshop to help painters learn to identify the visual elements in a piece of artwork that resonate with the viewer in powerful ways. Students will explore painting techniques that serve to push an ordinary painting to become a more impactful one. They will also work on a larger piece over the course of the two days. A study of master painters, along with living, contemporary painters who have mastered Impact strategies, will be conducted.

As the workshop progresses, students will dive into expanding their skill sets around variety of line, value and contrast, discovering how to paint with their own distinct style. Included with registration for Impact! is a 20-page resource Ebook, which will instruct students on how to pre-prep a canvas before class.

The Ebook information will be covered during the workshop as well! *This class will also be offered in our Traverse City location on June 17 & 18.

THE TAO OF WATERCOLOR Instructor: Betty Bea Washburn Medium: Watercolor June 24, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $110 Members/$150 Non-Members The Tao of Watercolor explores an intuitive form of watercolor painting. Water becomes the vehicle for transporting the paint into glowing atmospheric conditions, natural grasses and foliage. Come and enjoy the release of “spiritual” watercolor painting.

IKAT & EMBELLISHMENT WORKSHOP Instructor: Mary Zicafoose Medium: Textiles June 25-27, 9:00 am-4:00 pm • North Central Community College $310 Members/$350 Non-Members (Plus a $25 Supply Fee to be paid to instructor.)

This studio workshop teaches the precise and sequential steps required for creating weft-faced IKAT tapestries and rugs. Students warp a loom, plan a sampler, and learn to measure, stretch, wrap, dye, unwrap and weave the IKAT weft. While technically challenging, the results are dramatic and inspire many creative possibilities. This weft oriented dye process, in conjunction with on-loom embellishment techniques, is rarely taught or explored in depth.

PAINTING ANIMALS FROM PHOTOS Instructor: Howard Friedland, OPA/AIS Medium: Oil July 18 & 19, 9:00 am-4:00 pm* $255 Members/$295 Non-Members There are certain subjects that are very difficult (if not impossible) to attempt from life. Two that immediately come to mind are children and animals (they just won’t stay still). Photography is a great tool for situations like this.

Paintings of cats, dogs, horses and even birds are great sellers, and pet portraits make great gifts for friends and family. In addition, the world of wildlife paintings (another popular genre) can be explored with the help of photography.

In this class students will not only concentrate on the fundamental skills needed to make a good painting but they will also concentrate on creating believable paintings by focusing on accurate drawing, fur textures, gestures and action.

Students will also learn how to grid out a painting to help with correct drawing and proportions. Howard will have some photos to share, but students should bring their own to work from as well. *Howard Friedland will also offer Figures in the Landscape Workshop at our Traverse City location on July 21 & 22.

CTAC will be hosting a photography expedition to Yosemite National Park for fall 2016 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of our National Parks and our upcoming Ansel Adams exhibit (Summer 2017).

FIND YOUR OWN VOICE – CONCEPTS PAINTING Instructor: Susan Blackwood Medium: Oil July 21 & 22, 9:00 am-4:00 pm* $255 Members/$295 Non-Members As artists, we all wonder if we have a “look” to our paintings that is uniquely ours.

With guidance from Susan Blackwood students will explore the many realistic ways to express and interpret any subject into expressive paintings. Applying painting concepts for interpreting realism have been used for centuries in our favorite paintings, and now students will know why they love them so much.

Students will move away from copying the image, to creating an expression in realism; igniting their paintings with concepts, which will take their paintings to a whole new level. This is a workshop centered around using different ways to interpret and express one’s paintings creatively. In two days, students will study and explore six different methods and discover how to apply them to their own paintings. *Susan Blackwood will also offer The Many Ways of Water Workshop at our Traverse City location on July 18 & 19.

20-20 VISION WORKSHOP Instructors: Todd & Brad Reed Medium: Photography July 27, 1:00-5:00 pm $65 Members/$105 Non-Members The 20-20 Vision Workshops will focus on the art/vision side of photography.

Todd and Brad will provide you with more choices/building blocks to create great art by utilizing the 20 artistic elements they use when they are in the field building their photographs. They build photographs, they don’t take photographs. Todd and Brad will help the most experienced shooters along with total beginners, learn how to become more efficient and effective in building strong compositions.

CLASSICAL PAINTING ALLA PRIMA Instructor: Patrick Wise Medium: Oil/Watercolor/Acrylic July 27-30, 1:00-4:00 pm $125 Members/$165 Non-Members Alla Prima is Italian for ‘at first attempt’, a classical method of painting in which expressive brush strokes and vibrant colors are used to capture the essence of the subject. Students will learn the fine art approach of direct observational painting in this class, focusing on value patterns and color relationships to bring their work to life.

BOLD BRUSH PLEIN AIR Instructor: Shelby Keefe Medium: Oil August 4-6, 10:00 am-5:00 pm $410 Members / $450 Non-Members One of the biggest challenges for plein air painters is to successfully narrow down infinite amounts of detail and express the essence of a scene. Students will learn and apply strategies for simplification, value accuracy, compositional uniqueness and much more. Shelby will share her method of applying complementary colors as an underpainting to the white canvas, and jumping in with both feet to grab the light before it changes. She will demonstrate her technique every morning and then help each student one-on-one throughout the rest of the day.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP WITH TONY COUCH Instructor: Tony Couch Medium: Watercolor August 8-11, 9:00 am-5:00 pm $375 Members/$415 Non-Members Geared to beginner, intermediate painters and professionals alike, this will be a thorough workshop with full sheet demonstration painting each morning, plenty of time to paint in the afternoon, and daily critiques. Tony will unravel much of the “mystery” surrounding design, while he shows students how to make paintings fresh and crisp—he’ll make color much simpler, too. The eight Principles of Design will be cut down to size each day, and students will see how they are applied to watercolor painting. Students will learn something valuable and practice it on the spot, coming away with an increased understanding and several watercolor paintings of which to be proud.

CAPTURING THE LIGHT Instructor: Tim Horn Medium: Oil September 29-October 2, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $495 Members/$535 Non-Members The primary focus of this four-day workshop will be on how to convey the sense of strong sunlight in your paintings by identifying, clarifying and establishing proper value relationships. Exercises will be used to help simplify these concepts. Students will also work on achieving clean color in their paintings, and utilize value patterns to aid in developing successful compositions. There will be discussions on materials, scene selection and brushwork. During the workshop, Tim will do a demonstration painting each day, and work with students individually on their paintings throughout the rest of the day. Mornings will be spent in the studio, with painting time spent outdoors in the afternoons, weather permitting. Tim will also present a slide show and discuss some of his recent work. This workshop is geared toward beginning and intermediate painters.

Traverse City Workshops VISUAL NOTE TAKING: A PRIMER FOR PAINTERS Instructor: Margo Burian Medium: Acrylic/Oil/Watercolor May 20-22, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $260 Members/$300 Non-Members During this three-day course, students will deeply immerse themselves in the practice of visual note taking and begin to develop a language uniquely their own through sketching, drawing, painting and photography. While the focus of the work will be primarily on developing drawing, painting and compositional skills, together the class will also be considering how the camera can help or hinder the painting process. Throughout the workshop, students will be making a variety of investigations into furthering their visual vocabulary by looking at slides, drawing from life and memory, learning to interpret black and white drawings with color, and using the camera as a compositional tool. Through a series of fast-paced inquiries, students will delve into exploring materials and observation as a way of connecting with the world as preparation for painting. The class will not be making finished paintings during the workshop, but rather emboldening and stretching the ideas of what constitutes the painting process.

ABSTRACTING FROM NATURE Instructor: Jane Sassaman Medium: Fiber June 20-22, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $375 Members/$415 Non-Members Nature is an endless source of inspiration. In this class, students will examine a wide variety of artists’ interpretations of nature before beginning to manipulate natural forms themselves. Through a series of exercises, students will experiment with abstraction and exaggeration to capture the essence and energy of their favorite flora and achieve dramatic visual effects. Students will then translate these ideas into fabric.

THE MANY WAYS OF WATER Instructor: Susan Blackwood Medium: Oil/Watercolor July 18-19, 9:00 am-4:00 pm* $255 Members/$295 Non-Members Water comes in all sizes and shapes, from tiny dew drops to roaring oceans. In this workshop, students study and paint everything from little drops of rain, puddles, and lakes to rushing creeks, waterfalls and crashing waves. Each has a specific way of reflecting and glowing with the light, creating sparkle and drama to one’s paintings. This workshop is open to oil painters and watercolorists— Susan will be demonstrating in both. Students will also do an evening photoshoot on the beach to capture the light and form of the waves. *Susan Blackwood will also offer Find Your Own Voice – Concepts Painting Workshop at our Petoskey location on July 21 & 22.

FIGURES IN THE LANDSCAPE Instructor: Howard Friedland, OPA/AIS Medium: Oil July 21 & 22, 9:00 am-4:00 pm* $255 Members/$295 Non-Members Do you have a photograph of a great scene that was meant to be painted? Is something missing that could make it a better painting? Certain scenes just beg for a figure or two to add an element of emotion. Humans relate to humans or human things; therefore, figures in landscape make an undeniable focal point.

Concepts like articulating gestures, creating eye movement, and using suggestion, rather than over-detailing can make paintings, and the figures within, look more professional. Knowing how and where to place a figure without unbalancing the composition can be very tricky. This two-day workshop will unfold the mystery of effectively adding a figure to landscapes and include tips for using Photoshop, or similar photo manipulation tools, to compile several photos as reference. * Howard Friedland will also offer a Painting Animals from Photos Workshop at our Petoskey location on July 18 & 19.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE: THE BEST OF BOTH Instructor: Liz Haywood-Sullivan Medium: Pastel August 2-5, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $435 Members/$475 Non-Members Explore both studio and plein air pastel painting with instruction by internationally-acclaimed artist, instructor, and author Liz Haywood-Sullivan.

This intensive workshop starts with the first day in the studio where students will cover Liz’s Good Bones structural system to painting, and will discuss portability with pastels. The next two days, students will move into the local environment, where daily studies will involve direct observation of the landscape with instruction in choosing a subject and composition from life, aerial perspective, working with underpainting, using correct drawing and scaling up, and sky and water value work. The final day, students will return to the studio and paint from sketchbooks and memory. In both settings, Liz will start each day with a demonstration. There will be two group critiques and plenty of individual instruction at the easel.

PAPER PAINTINGS COLLAGE Instructor: Elizabeth St. Hilaire Medium: Acrylic/Collage August 15-18, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $450 Members/$490 Non-Members This workshop is a comprehensive class in which students will learn a unique figurative collage technique. Students will create hand painted papers for collage.

Emphasis will be on developing form using light, shadow, and directional ripping —very similar to traditional painting techniques. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience would be helpful, but not imperative.

VISUAL IMPROVISATION Instructor: Jane Davies Medium: Acrylic/Collage August 22-26, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $500 Members/$540 Non-Members In this workshop, students will use acrylic paints, collage, and drawing materials to explore a visual world beyond the usual design principles and concerns of composition. Students will let go of rules and expectations, and discover what is unique about themselves as artists. Anyone that has ever tried this knows that it is more easily said than done. How does one silence the voices that say, ‘get it right the first time’? Will painting without concern for color theory or accurate representation just make a mess? Students will take a broader view of composition and gain the tools necessary to create a more personal voice, helping to push doubts aside and allowing creativity to flourish.

FROM SKETCHBOOK TO STUDIO Instructor: Iain Stewart Medium: Watercolor September 12-15, 9:00 am-4:00 pm $460 Members/$500 Non-Members Explore the medium of watercolor in a relaxing and creative environment.

Award-winning watercolorist Iain Stewart’s sole focus will be bringing creativity to light and aiding students in dispelling the myths of the difficulties of painting in this wonderful medium. Given the right encouragement and understanding of the basic fundamentals, watercolor is a creative outlet unmatched in its ease of use, cost of materials, and pure enjoyment of artistic expression.

Through demonstration, careful critique, and lessons learned over a long painting career, Iain will help students understand how to prepare for, and anticipate the challenges that painting in watercolor presents. By guiding students through his process, which relies on simplification of subject through sketching, graphite value studies, and preliminary color studies, Iain will demonstrate how to create a roadmap that, if followed, will greatly improve one’s painting. Painters with more experience can work from their own photographs with individual guidance, while beginners will follow Iain in a group demonstration.

Instructor Biographies Susan Blackwood Susan Blackwood has a passion for teaching artists. Her combination of enthusiasm, encouragement and knowledge is the hallmark of her teaching. She has been a professional artist and instructor since the early ’70s. For 32 years she was a professional watercolorist. In 2003 she ventured forth into the thick and gooey medium of oils and loves it, too. Her watercolors and oils have been in many national shows and museums, winning top awards. In 2010 she won Best of Show at the American Women Artists National Exhibition. Susan lives in Bozeman, Montana with her husband, artist Howard Friedland, surrounded by waterfalls, rushing streams, lakes and sometimes puddles and raindrops.

Margo Burian Margo has been working as a freelance illustrator since graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design with a BFA in 1992. Her commercial career has included projects for many national and regional clients, including American Greetings, McGraw-Hill Publishing, Booth Newspapers, North Star Teacher Resources, and more. The crossover from illustrator to fine artist seems to be a natural one for Margo. Much of her ‘misspent’ youth took place in northern Michigan, where she developed a love for the serenity and beauty of the woods and the ‘Big Lake.’ Time and time again, she finds that she is still drawn to those places. Burian exhibits her work in galleries throughout Traverse City, Harbor Springs, and Grand Rapids.

Tony Couch Tony Couch received a BA degree in Art from the University of Tampa, did further work at Pratt Institute in New York while an artist for Associated Press, then for years freelanced and studied with Edgar A. Whitney, ANA. His book, WATERCOLOR: You Can Do It!, has become the publisher’s all-time, best-selling art book and is the textbook in several college art departments. His watercolor instruction articles have appeared in Palette Talk, North Light, American Artist, Australian Artist, The Artist, and Watercolor Magic. Tony has produced 10 “how to” videos on drawing, design and watercolor painting tips and techniques. A winner of over 70 exhibition awards, his work has been included in three annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design and 11 art instruction publications by other authors in the U.S. and U.K. Tony has been elected to membership in the Academic Artists Association, Allied Artists of America, Hudson Valley Art Association, Knickerbocker Artists, Salmgundi Club, Society of Marine Painters, Watercolor West, The Pittsburgh, Georgia, Southern, and Midwest Watercolor Societies as well as the Whiskey Painters of America.

Jane Davies Jane Davies is a full-time artist working in collage, painting, and encaustic. She offers workshops at her studio and nationwide, focusing on helping people to find a personal and playful approach to art. Beginning as a potter in the early nineties, selling her colorful hand-painted ceramics at craft shows, Davies gradually transitioned into freelance art, designing tableware, fabric, paper goods, stationery, and other products, using painting and collage as her medium. For the past several years, Jane has put most of her efforts toward teaching, writing, and making art.

Margaret Dyer Margaret is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and an award-winning member of the American Impressionist Society. Her work has been featured many times in The Pastel Journal; International Artist Magazine; The Artists’ Magazine; American Artist and Pastel Artist International. You can find her in Pure Color-The Best of Pastels and 100 Ways to Paint People & Figures, Volumes 1 and 2. Margaret has taught pastel workshops across the USA, in France, Italy and Ireland.

Howard Friedland Howard Friedland was born in Bronx, New York. He has lived in Miami, Florida; Albuquerque and Taos, New Mexico; and now resides in Bozeman, Montana, with his wife artist Susan Blackwood. He studied at New York’s High School of Music and Art and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science in the department of Art and Architecture in New York’s Greenwich Village. Howard has studied with Ned Jacob, Michael J. Lynch, Mark Daley, Laura Robb, William Schultz, Robert Kuester, Charles Reed, Carolyn Anderson, Mitch Billis, Scott Christensen and most recently with Matt Smith. Oil Painters of America inducted Howard as a Signature Member in 2003. He was the winner of the First Place Award in the 2014 Fall Showcase Signature Member Division. In 2008 Friedland received the National Award of Excellence “Best of Show” at the 17th annual OPA National Exhibition. Howard has also been awarded the Best Landscape medal at the “Icons of the West” show at the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana. Howard has painted, taught and exhibited extensively in New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, New Jersey, Kansas, Florida, Tennessee, Mexico, France, Italy, England, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and China.

Ardith Goodwin As an artist, Ardith is a natural mark-maker. Her connection to Asemic Writing and movement of line is a signature trait throughout all of her styles. Mark-making is fundamental to her creative practice and she captivates the viewer with her expression of dynamic, fluid, line work mixed with a bit of oddity and strangeness. As the line moves, color gives spacial structure for the marks to flow, through facial expression, through the juicy tidbits of geometric planes, through layers of glazes, and the impact is a delightful composition of the unexpected. Ardith combines her love of writing and educating with a self-taught passion for art and has been a professional artist for the past 15 years. Despite facing life changing orthopedic challenges, Ardith holds true to her faith and the belief that no matter what challenge life throws her way, nothing will quench her spirit to continue creating, sharing, and inspiring. With joyful determination, she shares her love of art with children and adults through local and online classes and actively promotes the lifestyle of moving through life as a creative and maker.

Liz Haywood-Sullivan After a successful career as a graphic and exhibit designer, Liz Haywood-Sullivan turned her focus to fine art and the pastel medium in 1996. A landscape painter based in Marshfield Hills, MA, Liz became the President of the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) and is the IAPS representative to ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials). She has been a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America since 1998, and holds Signature memberships in the Connecticut Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. She is also a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York and the Academic Artists Association. Liz conducts workshops on pastel painting and the business of art, and is a sought-after judge. Her paintings are collected worldwide and are represented by Vose Galleries of Boston, the oldest continually-run gallery in the U.S. Her Northlight book, Painting Brilliant Skies and Water in Pastel, was published in early 2013 to great reviews. Her DVDs for The Artist’s Network, Painting Realistic Landscapes in Pastel: Skies, Water, and Mixing Greens were released in 2012.

Timothy Horn Horn grew up in a small town in Ohio, and moved to New York City to attend the Cooper Union School of Art where his focus was graphic design. After graduation, he worked in the field of design for 22 years, first in New York and then San Francisco. During his career, he continued to explore a number of extracurricular creative pursuits including portrait photography, furniture making, and creating clocks and medicine cabinets from salvaged materials, before he finally found his ultimate medium of expression in oil painting. After a couple of years of regular plein air classes, he was completely hooked and phased out his design business entirely in 2006. With diverse subject matter that includes old buildings, classic cars, Airstream trailers, working ranches and urban street scenes, Horn’s paintings are as much about the subjects he paints as they are about the effects of light within a particular scene. His work has won numerous awards and has been featured in several magazines, including the cover of Southwest Art in 2012. He lives in Northern California and teaches painting workshops around the country and abroad. He is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, and a signature member of Oil Painters of America.

Shelby Keefe Shelby Keefe paints in a bold brush, realistic style uniquely her own. Living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she earned a BFA in 1981 and then embarked upon a career as a graphic designer.

She became a full-time fine artist in 2005 and now travels the country painting in plein air competitions, and teaching workshops. Her style is becoming noticed nationally, having been recently published in Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine—both honoring her as the cover artist. She received the Best of Show at “En Plein Air Texas” in November 2015. Shelby is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and American Women Artists. Her gallery representations are: Marshall Gallery of Fine Art in Scottsdale, AZ, Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery in Crested Butte and Telluride, CO, Timothy Cobb Fine Art in Milwaukee, WI, and Castle Gallery of Fine Art in Fort Wayne, IN. Susan Lingg Susan is a self-taught artist, enjoying the process of painting in mixed media, using watercolor, handmade paper and acrylic. A full-time artist, Susan has had a studio-gallery for over 20 years.

Enjoying the exploration of color and light, Susan now holds a full schedule of painting and teaching and leads three-hour exploring watercolor workshops. Susan captures unforgettable moments at weddings and special events, and loves demonstrating during Art Walks and participating in fundraisers. She enjoys sharing her style of accessing the creative juices that are within all of us. Susan’s paintings reflect the beauty and magic of the Smokey Mountains that surround her home. Her paintings could be described as realism through an artist’s eye. The nature of her work, collaging with paper or mica from the earth, or pouring watercolor into mixed media, all allow for free expression, play and experimentation. “It’s like dancing in the freedom of creativity,” Susan says. Susan receives additional inspiration from traveling with her husband, kayaking the bright and beautiful waters of Michigan and Florida, and walking in the trees and pathways of nature.

Todd & Brad Reed Todd and Brad Reed are a father-son outdoor photography team based in Ludington, Michigan.

Todd has been recording Michigan scenes for over 45 years. Twenty-three of those years Todd spent as a photojournalist for the Ludington Daily News, where he won dozens of industry awards for his photos portraying the beauty and telling the stories of everyday life in small towns and rural areas. Brad’s journey as a photographer started as a young boy. He jumped at every chance to carry his father’s gear on photo shoots throughout the region. Without a camera in his hand, Brad practiced seeing the world in photographs and learned that extraordinary photography requires chasing the light and capturing the defining moment. Todd and Brad have a simple approach to photography. They choose subjects that touch them in emotional ways, and strive to convey their emotions through the photographs they make. They are both known for saying that good photography is all about feeling. To see and appreciate a scene in the natural world is one thing; the artists’ challenge is to capture visually the emotions of that scene and that moment. It is simply a matter of being present at those rare moments and letting the heart guide the composition.

Jane Sassaman After a varied career in the design world, Jane began to quilt in 1980. She found that these “soft paintings” satisfied the draftsman, the craftsman, and the artist in her. Consequently, she is now a dedicated (some say obsessed!) quilt artist and fabric designer. Her art quilts have been shown in many national and international exhibits, including Quilt National 1989-2005, and Contemporary American Quilts, the first major exhibit of American art quilts in England. Her quilt “Willow” was named as one of the One Hundred Best American Quilts of the Century. Jane is also the author of The Quilted Garden; the book includes twenty years of her work and exercises for making nature-inspired quilts. Jane’s love for historic decorative arts can be seen in all facets of her work, but it is especially evident in the exuberant fabric she is currently designing for FreeSpirit. Her designs are oversized and colorful, and they have been coined as “William Morris on anti-depressants.” They are created for quilts, wearables and home decorating. Her latest book, Patchwork Sassaman Style, beautifully illustrates her fabric in action.

Elizabeth St. Hilaire Meticulously torn bits of hand-painted papers, delicately put together, form the exceptionally vibrant collages created by artist Elizabeth St. Hilaire. Featured in the April 2014 issue of The Artists Magazine, St. Hilaire will also be published in the upcoming North Light Books’ Incite 2 Color Passions: The Best of Mixed Media. She was a finalist in The Richeson 75 Online Annual Artist Contest in 2013, as well as for The Artist Magazine 29th Annual Art Competition in 2012, both in the category of animals/wildlife. Elizabeth was also an award winner at the National Collage Society’s Signature Members Exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in 2013 and took first place in the category of collage/mixed media for The Artists Magazine All Media Contest in 2010. Born and raised in New England, Elizabeth has lived in central Florida for the past 19 years. She holds a BFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University. St. Hilaire is a Signature Member of the National Collage Society.

Iain Stewart Iain Stewart is a watercolor artist/illustrator and a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society. His work has received numerous awards in international competitions, and he is a sought-after juror and workshop instructor. Iain is also an architectural illustrator with an international clientele. He maintains a studio in Opelika, AL.

Betty Bea Washburn Betty Bea Washburn has been a professional watercolorist for the last 30 years. Before settling in northern lower Michigan, Betty Bea was a public school art teacher in the Marshall Public School system. Today she finds inspiration for her large and vibrant watercolors in area landscapes, gardens and historical sites, especially those on Mackinac Island. Washburn is intrigued by watercolor relationships: the harmony between the physical properties of the medium, the effect of atmosphere on the subject matter, and the use of color to create an internal glow. Her watercolor journey, which included study under Nita Engle, has led to an intuitive style of painting achieved by floating color on paper surface and pouring atmospheric colors to achieve glowing light effects.

Patrick Wise Patrick Wise, a Petoskey native, earned his Master of Arts degree at Wayne State University.

Patrick recently won First Place/Best in Show at the Manoogian Mackinac Contemporary Art Show in June, 2015. His last appearance at Crooked Tree Arts Center was in 2014, as a teacher and lecturer for the Detroit @ CTAC event. He is an award-winning artist with artwork shown locally and nationally. Patrick is an adjunct professor and art educator in the metro Detroit area.

Mary Zicafoose Nebraska artist Mary Zicafoose is a master at weft ikat, a complex design dye process, that has stimulated new directions in tapestry. Her work has been represented in the International Triennial of Tapestry, Lodz, Poland; Museo de Textil, Oaxaca, Mexico; China National Silk Museum, Hangzhou, and the collections of over a dozen United States Embassies abroad. She also produces annual editions of works on paper as colographic monoprints. Mary received a BFA from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana, with graduate studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Nebraska. A USA Artist finalist and 2008 Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts resident artist, Zicafoose is co-director of the American Tapestry Alliance, chairman of the board of the Omaha Union for Contemporary Art, and former board member of GoodWeave USA. Extensive exhibition, teaching and lecture venues include the de Young Museum, San Francisco, Penland School of Craft, Penland, NC, Arrowmont School of Craft, Gatlinburg, TN, and Weavers Guilds and textile conferences worldwide.
