Crooked Tree Arts Center is a community organization based in the arts, committed to providing quality and unique arts-related experiences to local individuals and those who are visiting and residing in the Northern Michigan region. Through fine art exhibitions, lectures, visual arts workshops, dance and music programs, concerts and more, CTAC inspires and enriches lives through the arts.
FROM DAN LEDINGHAM, BOARD CHAIRMAN AND LIZ AHRENS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT Dear CTAC Friends— It’s the deep of winter here in Northern Michigan. We balance the desire to bundle up and stay inside or bundle up against the wind to venture out. Many people wonder how us full-timers keep ourselves occupied during the deep freeze that seems to extend into April. Well, we each have our personal winter survival guide, and here at CTAC we entice you with as many activities as possible to lure you out into the cold! How about a leisurely stroll through our galleries, stop in for a lecture, enroll in a class, or shop at the weekly CTAC Artisans & Farmers Market? We promise you’ll feel more inspired and enriched when you view our winter exhibits and perhaps even encouraged to enter an upcoming show! It’s the time of year our committees and staff are working diligently, planning budgets, booking performers, contracting with instructors, and finishing details on summer events. Here’s an idea: Why don’t you join one of our committees? It’s another great way to keep busy during the quieter months. We need lots of assistance with our Paint Grand Traverse: A Plein Air Affair event in TC this summer—give us a call or stop by to learn more. Although the snow is deep here along the frozen bays, we know many of you are enjoying warmer climes. Wherever you happen to be whiling away the winter months, please know we send our deepest gratitude for the generosity you have provided over the past year. And we thank you in advance for those gifts you will send our way in 2018. We can only survive with your help—no matter what time of year! Your leaders—

We bid farewell to Sheila Ruen, our Galleries Director, as she has accepted a position with the Eleanor and Edsel Ford House and Fairlane Manor. We will miss Sheila, her creativity and wit, but we know she’ll be back to visit often. Our plan is to have a new Galleries Director in place by the end of February.

This $500 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding high school junior or senior who demonstrates excellent artistic creativity, craftsmanship, and promise. Our 16th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition is open to all aspiring authors in the Char-Em ISD (or homeschool students in Charlevoix or Emmet counties), Kindergarten through Grade 12. "SERSE" – AN OPERA BY ISAAC WITTENBERG WHEN: May 31, June 1 & 2 • 7:00 pm CTAC-Petoskey Theater “Serse,” based on the over 360-year-old libretto, is an Italian opera re-scored by local high school senior Isaac Wittenberg. With the help of local artists, his opera will be produced at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey.

The mission of The Learning Studio is to expand programming that explores the endless possibilities that lifelong learning has to offer to achieve optimal aging. The goal of this project is to provide an intergenerational learning opportunity through the arts, while also teaching area children about the Civil War. The Learning Studio will be working with Public Schools of Petoskey Enrichment Coordinator, Kathy Slack, and her group of 18, fourthgrade language arts students. These boys and girls were selected for the enrichment program based on their exceptional test scores. Each volunteering mentor will work with a student to create a quilt block during three set dates at Crooked Tree Arts Center. It is The Learning Studio’s hope that the student and mentor establish a relationship through sewing activities and letter writing that will not only be beneficial to the student, but to the mentor. Crooked Tree Arts Center will provide fabric, patterns, and lesson plans from the text Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Sampler. ART & ACTION SPRING BREAK CAMP
Two of our Pre-Professional students’ recent choreographic works were selected, upon adjudication, to be performed at the Midwest Regional Alternative Dance (RAD) Festival on March 11. Emily Stabile, age 14, will showcase her piece, “Déjà vu,” and Haley Van Patten, age 18, will perform her piece, “Is Humanity Humane,” among the works of 200 other dance artists at the festival.
Art & Action combines two things kids really love: to move and to create! Join CTAC instructors for a week of fun-filled creation and movement. Activities will change daily, so kids can come for one day or stay all week. Kids should come dressed in comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.
The Midwest RAD Fest is a juried event at the Epic Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan featuring the best in modern, post-modern, and contemporary dance from all over the country. No other festival in the region offers emerging, professional, and experimental artists the opportunity to present their work (without financial commitment), opportunities for professional development (master classes, lectures, discussion panels), and free networking events.

In 1993, Taylor established the Taylor 2 Dance Company to ensure that audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or technical limitations, could see his works. The Taylor 2 Dance Company is comprised of six professionals who all have a particular gift for the Company’s American Modern Dance-style. Through their tours and performances, the group showcases the athleticism, humor, and range of emotions that characterize Mr. Taylor’s work.
Six Appeal is a world class vocal ensemble infused with impeccable comedic timing and the energy and vitality of a rock band. Swearing off instruments, this award-winning vocal band takes you on a journey that spans decades of music, performing classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes – all sung a cappella. NEW YEAR'S EVE AT THE ARTS CENTER On December 31, we celebrated 11 years of ringing in the New Year at the Arts Center. With festive and fun programming put on by CTAC, the Petoskey District Library, and Blissfest Music Organization, children, families, and community members enjoyed hands-on activities, workshops, and live music by local musicians and bands. As per tradition, the evening culminated with the exciting “Midnight at 9” ball drop outside the Arts Center. Thank you to CTAC instructors, area artists, Blissfest, and the Petoskey District Library for their participation! Jürgen Griswold, an 11-year-old Ellsworth Community Schools student, was the featured artist for 2018. His artwork was used for t-shirts, admission buttons, and promotional materials for the event.
THE MAN IN THE CRANE Hundreds of community members gathered on the corner of E. Mitchell and Division Street as the oversized, lighted ball rose up into the sky, dangling from a 100-foot crane, donated by Moran Iron Works and operated by longtime employee, Mr. Dan (Shep) Shephard. Since the inception of New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center, Shep has volunteered his time to execute the ball drop, a pivotal part of the holiday celebration, punctuated by a rousing rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” in the street. Thank you to Shep and Moran Iron Works for their years of helping with the NYE finale! New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center is generously sponsored in part by the Kroeger-Mainland Family Fund at Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Moran Iron Works, and the L’Arbre Croche fund at PHSACF.

a plein air affair Crooked Tree Arts Center is pleased to announce Paint Grand Traverse: A Plein Air Affair. This week-long plein air painting event will take place August 13-18, and feature approximately 30 national-caliber plein air artists and ten regional artists working throughout the Grand Traverse region.
In summer 2018, we have the special opportunity to present a juried art exhibition of work by members of the Oil Painters of America. The OPA represents over 4,000 artists throughout the continent, and promotes excellence in representational art. Its membership includes many of the best oil painters working today —masters of the medium who are influential in their artistic communities.
That is what we want to do for the visual arts.
Our vision is to create a summer of vibrant educational, family, and interactive programming— free and low cost wherever possible—that will engage and inspire artists, future artists, and art patrons, at all stages in life and creative journey.
Just as you can go to the film festival and ask a director about her use of camera angles, we want you to come to a live demo and talk with an artist about shadow and light. And just as you can go to the Traverse Symphony and hear world-class talents interpret powerful music, we want you to come to Paint Grand Traverse and watch world-class talents interpret our landscapes.
Paint Grand Traverse is the keystone event of the summer, which celebrates the artistic interpretation of our region’s beautiful landscapes, architecture, and small-town charm.
Through the Oil Painters of America exhibit and the annual Paint Grand Traverse event, not only will Crooked Tree–Traverse City be transformed, but the Grand Traverse region will be transformed.
The world of plein air painting competitions is flourishing. Major events are held in picturesque locations, including Telluride and Boulder, Colorado; Door County, Wisconsin; Jupiter, Florida; Sedona, Arizona; Laguna Beach, California; Cape Ann, Massachusetts; and many more.
We hope that Paint Grand Traverse will become a major annual event, drawing artists, art collectors, patrons, and spectators. The Grand Traverse region is well-known for a lot of wonderful things...cherries, wine and craft beer, the food scene, the film festival, Interlochen, Sleeping Bear Dunes...and now it’s time for fine art to shine.
When we look at other successful organizations and events—such as the Traverse City Film Festival, the National Writers Series, Interlochen, the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, Parallel 45 Theatre, and TEDx

Traverse City, to name a few—one great thing they have in common is that they present artists, speakers, and experiences usually reserved for bigger cities, right here in Northern Michigan.

TEACHING ABROAD Aimon Dwan,
cellist and alumnae of the Strings Program at Crooked Tree Arts Center, currently teaches orchestra to 4th–12th grade students at Academia Cotopaxi, an American International School in Quito, Ecuador. A strings student from 4th–12th grade, Aimon credits the instruction and encouragement from her first orchestra teacher, Mrs. Karey Sitzler, for music remaining a central part of her life: “I owe my interest in becoming a music teacher to Mrs. Karey Sitzler. She not only taught me to play the cello, but she showed me the power that music has to bring people together and create tight-knit communities.” Mrs. Sitzler was the first strings instructor for CTAC when the program was launched in Fall of 2000. After graduating high school, Aimon attended the College of Wooster and majored in Music Education. From there she taught for two years in Worthington, Minnesota before pursuing a teaching position abroad. Aimon learned about Academia Cotopaxi, and was subsequently hired as the school’s orchestra teacher, while attending the University of Northern Iowa Overseas Recruitment Fair. Academia Cotopaxi students come from all over the world, representing 32 nationalities and families of diplomats, NGO employees, and corporate and business owners. When asked what she finds the greatest joy to be about teaching strings, Aimon had this to say: “I love seeing the pride that students develop through the growth of their musical potential. It is wonderful to see students feel a sense of accomplishment upon performing to the best of their ability or upon learning a difficult piece of music. I also love seeing the way in which students bond through music.” Aimon is in her third and final year at Academia Cotopaxi, and is also currently working on her Masters of Music Education with Strings Specialization through VanderCook College of Music. A strings student turned teacher, Aimon Dwan is now able to instruct, encourage, and positively influence her students just as Mrs. Karey Sitzler did for Aimon during her time with the CTAC Strings Program. A Long History of Supporting the Arts PAUL AND CAROL LAPORTE, self-proclaimed “makers and doers,” have been involved in the arts for years. From personal
artistic endeavors and building home additions to starting an interior design business and filling their home with original works of art, they have enjoyed being both creators and patrons. With a passion for the arts and community involvement instilled during their respective upbringings, the LaPortes have spent recent years supporting numerous arts-related organizations in the Traverse City area.
It started out with Paul taking summer workshops at ACTC, which led to him becoming a member, and then being asked to join the Board by fellow member Bob Streit. Paul eventually became president of ACTC, and it was at this time that he first came into contact with Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC).

Paul’s interest in the visual arts began during his childhood thanks to his artistic mother’s influence. Since his early introduction to the arts, Paul has explored oil painting, stained glass, and watercolor painting, a medium that he still works in today. Carol, on the other hand, focused on the practical hobbies of knitting, sewing, and craft-making in her youth. She always had an interest in design and color, but it wasn’t until Carol met Paul that she really became aware of the world of fine visual arts. Once married, the LaPortes built a life together, a life that greatly valued the arts. After moving north to Traverse City in 1990, Paul and Carol became involved with several community arts organizations. During their involvement, Paul was able to implement his experience as a business consultant to assist in the growth of each organization. First, Paul served on the board of The Music House Museum as president. Next, at the request of the Michigan State University Extension in Traverse City, and due to Carol’s skills as a master gardener, the LaPortes helped establish the Botanical Gardens to preserve and protect nature for the community as a lasting legacy. And then Paul and Carol got involved with Artcenter Traverse City (ACTC).
During a summit at Crystal Mountain in 2012, representatives from 22 arts organizations in the region gathered to coordinate, network, and collaborate; two organizations in attendance were Artcenter Traverse City and Crooked Tree. Paul had a hope that the two arts centers would join together in the name of collaboration: “Anybody paying attention to the arts in Northwest Michigan knew about Crooked Tree, and that was our gold standard,” he recalls. What he hadn’t expected was that the initial discussion of collaboration would quickly turn to talks of merging the two organizations. Fast-forwarding a little over two years to November 2014, after much work and defending the prospective merger, Paul signed the merger document at the City Office, accompanied by Carol, CTAC Executive Director Liz Ahrens, CTAC Board Member Jim Shrier, and CTAC Chairman Tony Ryner. Paul and Carol both hold this moment as their favorite ACTC/CTAC memory. Thrilled by the growth and outreach CTAC-TC has experienced since the merger, Paul and Carol both have high hopes for the organization’s future. Carol looks forward to more young families and artists getting involved with Crooked Tree. Paul in turn hopes to fulfill three specific goals: “continue the growth of Crooked Tree’s endowment and financial stability; further expand associations with other organizations in the region; and find a permanent home for CTAC-TC.” The LaPortes have given so much of their time, energy, and knowledge to the Traverse City area in the name of the arts and community. The arts center merger was truly a group effort, however, it wouldn’t have come to fruition without the unyielding tenacity and dedication of Paul and Carol LaPorte.

PLANNED GIVING The John and Sally Clark Legacy Society recognizes donors who provide for the future needs of the Crooked Tree Arts Center by including a gift in their estate plans. The society was named to honor the Clarks’ contributions to CTAC in our early days. Sally was one of our original founding members and was an accomplished artist. She was one of our first Kitchen Painters. Jack was key in our financial well-being. He assisted in facilitating the purchase of our facility in 1980, and he held the position of Chairman in our endowment fund drives during the 1980s and 90s. In their estate they bequeathed a gift of over $2,400,000 to CTAC’s endowment fund. The term “planned giving” refers to any major gift that involves financial or estate planning. Such gifts can provide important benefits both to you and to Crooked Tree Arts Center. The different types of planned gifts include: · Bequests · Gifts of life insurance policies · Gifts of retirement plan assets Before making a gift to Crooked Tree Arts Center, you should consult with your financial, tax, and legal advisors for a thorough analysis of your individual situation and the tax consequences to decide which of these ways of giving might work best for you.
