A Long History of Supporting the Arts BILL AND JANE MILLAR, two longstanding members, volunteers, and Petoskey residents, have made it their mission to support and enjoy the arts in Northern Michigan by giving back to Crooked Tree Arts Center. The arts have always held interest for Bill. From visiting museums, to attending concerts, and even taking art appreciation courses while at the University of Michigan, he has supported the visual and performing arts. When he relocated to Petoskey in 1972, Bill became aware of CTAC as it was just starting out – his brother, a local artist and teacher in Petoskey, turned him on to the fledgling organization, and Bill furthered his interest by becoming involved with the Arts Center. At first it was “lightweight involvement,” as Bill so colloquially put it, but soon he found himself on the Performing Arts Committee, the Board of Directors, the Culinary Arts Committee, and he also served as CTAC’s President from 2012-14. Bill is most proud of the creation of the “Volunteer Spotlight” and Volunteer Luncheon, which he spearheaded during his two-year term: “The Arts Center members who volunteer their services make CTAC successful; they make what we do possible.” Recognizing the Arts Center’s strong volunteer base was number one on Bill’s list, as he knew firsthand how hard volunteers work. Bill not only serves on CTAC committees, but he also assists in hanging visual arts exhibitions, announcing performers for the Concerts in the Park series, ushering during Performing Arts Series events, and he happily supports CTAC’s Artisans and Farmers Market on Fridays. In 2014, at the end of his term as President, Bill was honored with the “Volunteer Spotlight” award for all his hard work and devotion to CTAC.

Bill and Jane have supported the arts in Northern Michigan for many years by advocating community collaboration, Arts Center programming, and the recognition of volunteers.

Growing up, the arts were ever-present in Jane’s life. She studied ballet, took flute and piano lessons, and attended concerts and musicals with her parents. Such pastimes were so prevalent that Jane recalled, “I didn’t know the arts weren’t a part of life.” Later on, Jane was heavily involved with Charlotte, North Carolina’s Symphony and School for the Arts as a volunteer, helping with fundraising and bringing events and performances, such as the Nutcracker, to fruition. When she moved to Petoskey in 1992, Jane immediately became involved with CTAC, which was still “a cute, little organization” at the time. Because of her strong volunteering background within the arts, CTAC asked her to join their Board, a position Jane eagerly accepted. From 2005-07, she served as CTAC’s President. During her term, Jane strove to establish a plan and budget for the Arts Center, in hopes of securing financial stability for years to come – a goal in which she and the Board succeeded. Jane cites helping to secure this stability as the greatest highlight of her term so CTAC can continue making great programming available. Jane loves seeing how much the youth programming has grown since she first became involved with CTAC: “Kids have access to art and culture in our community. Arts typically get cut first in the schools – if CTAC wasn’t here there wouldn’t be the same programming available to our community’s youth.” Looking to the future, Jane hopes to see more collaboration with other community groups and organizations – the Great Lakes Center for the Arts and Bay View especially. “If we collaborate as much as possible, our community will only benefit,” said Jane. For his hopes of CTAC’s future, Bill adds, “I would like to see CTAC continue to grow in membership, and maintain its high degree of respect it has earned in the art world.” Bill and Jane’s efforts and support are based on an ingrained and shared passion for the arts; what they’ve done and continue to do for CTAC and our community will endure for years to come.

CHALK THE WALK Crooked Tree Arts Center and Top of Michigan Trails Council gathered artists this summer for the annual, Chalk the Walk. Due to inclement weather, CTAC-Petoskey’s event was cancelled, but Chalk the Walk took place as part of Traverse City’s Friday Night Live downtown block party on August 26. Artists chalked the sidewalk on Cass Street near Front Street for the annual celebration. Chalk the Walk in Traverse City was presented in partnership with the Downtown Traverse City Association (DTCA).

FROM ºTONY RYNER — BOARD CHAIRMAN This is an exciting time for the arts in northern Michigan. We are fortunate to live in an area that recognizes the importance of the Arts. They are part of a tapestry that weaves itself through every aspect of our community. They connect us in ways we might not ever experience otherwise. Our support of the Arts is a reflection of how we view ourselves and a lens for others to view us. Crooked Trees’ mission is to inspire and enrich lives through the arts in northern Michigan with a vision to be recognized as a standard for excellence in arts and culture. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable hard working Board and hundreds of loyal volunteers willing to support the efforts of the mission. However, Crooked Tree would not be the organization that it is without the hard work of our dedicated professional staff. Crooked Tree is a platform for the arts that ties our communities together. We are a platform for connecting artists to the community and to each other. We are an educational platform that reinforces the Arts throughout our region, a platform that reaches out to every age and economic circumstance. You’ve received this newsletter because you have a personal interest in supporting the Arts locally. You are an ambassador for Crooked Tree Arts Center, one of the most unique arts organizations anywhere. As Ambassadors we ask that you seek out other like minded individuals to help our mission. Encouraging others to participate through volunteerism and membership is your charter. Crooked Tree is a community-based organization where everyone has the opportunity to make a difference. This an exciting time for Crooked Tree and I’m proud to be a part of it.
