Dear CTAC Members and Friends, The traditional start of the school year often feels as much like the “new year,” as does January 1. As such, it’s a time of reflection and new beginnings at Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Through the ongoing pandemic and public health concerns, you - our friends, members, and supporters - have galvanized us in the delivery of our mission. We’ve gotten more creative and responsive in how we offer our programming and developed new skills in the process.

We’ve navigated new grants and aid programs and built stronger relationships with artists and peer organizations. It’s been a season of growth and change.

Art, in all its forms, helps us engage and connect with others, and express and process a time that can be difficult and isolating. In short, our mission is more important than ever.

Realizing that our patrons’ comfort levels continue to be varied, we now offer both in-person and online opportunities with the hope that a “Crooked Tree Your Way” approach will continue to expand our reach and provide meaningful connections through the arts in our community. Guests can now view an exhibit in our Petoskey or Traverse City locations OR go online to explore the exhibits from the safety of their homes.

New this year, art-lovers were able to follow, view, and purchase artwork created by 40 artists in our virtual Paint Grand Traverse event. And, for the first time ever, DART for ART goers “darted” for art and bid on auction items using an online platform during the week-long reimagined event. We were overwhelmed and filled with gratitude for the success of both events!

Plein air workshops in both locations proved to be quite popular this summer, with instructors and students engaged and learning new skills while socially distancing outdoors.

As you will read in the coming pages, both locations will offer online instruction, lectures, and demonstrations, while adding back limited in-person experiences following COVID-19 safety protocols.

Looking forward, we will continue to find ways to creatively adapt and adjust programming as regulations, guidelines, and patron comfort levels permit. You’ll find the most up-to-date information on in-person and virtual events on our website.

Alma mater?

Lake Superior State University. I attended through the University Center at NCMC and graduated in May with a BS in Accounting, and in August with a BS in Business Administration and Management. I’m glad to be done!

How long have you been working at CTAC? Three wild years.

What is your position and duties?

Inventory Specialist! In addition to making magic happen at the front desk, I track all 3,000 pieces of our inventory and manage the beautiful Art Tree Sales Gallery. I answer phones, swing hammers, write spreadsheets, and do pretty much whatever needs to be done.

Thus far, what has been your favorite CTAC experience?

Definitely redesigning the sales gallery for the changing seasons. I love the creative spirit with my front desk partner as we figure out how to create the perfect Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas vibes.

When you’re not working at “The Tree,” what are you up to?

These days I’m hanging out with my husband (just got married in August!), playing digital and analog games, and enjoying friends and family. I adore spending time with the people I love, and I never tire of hearing the same old story over again.

Book you recently read?

Fall is my favorite season, and I love Halloween! As we approach the cooler months, I always reread my favorite spooky stories. Most recently, I enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

What’s your spirit animal?

The shoebill stork is undoubtedly my spirit animal. The machine-gun sound they make is terrifying, and I absolutely adore it. Plus, it has a hilarious name!

DART FOR ART The Virtual Experience

DART for ART may have looked a little different this year, but the goal remained the same – to come together virtually to support arts education and experiences in your community!

This year, we celebrated with 2020 Featured Artist Trisha Witty, whose original oil painting, Ethereal, served as the inspiration for the fundraising festivities. DART for ART featured virtual lectures with the School of Ballet and Trisha Witty, “happy hour” with DART featured artists past & present, and performances from the CTAC Garage Band during the live-

stream finale emceed by entertainer and CTAC Board Member, Ben Whiting.

A special thank you to the more than 150 artists who donated original works of art – everything from paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, and more. The DART for ART exhibition, installed by Visual Arts Director Liz Erlewine and longtime volunteers Bill Millar, Henry Pfeifle, and Connie Landis, was displayed in the galleries for the month of August.

Virtually Beautiful In August, the Paint Grand Traverse plein air painting festival and competition returned for its third year. Originally slated to follow a format similar to the 2018 and 2019 events, the COVID-19 pandemic interceded and required some quick adaptations. The result was Paint Grand Traverse: Virtually Beautiful, a hybrid - in-person and online - event that connected artists, fans, and collectors in a safe and responsible manner.

Forty outstanding plein air artists, primarily from Michigan and neighboring states, were selected via a competitive process. They came to Traverse City the weekend of August 8-9 to capture the summer magic. We split our weekend of painting between downtown Traverse City and Old Mission Peninsula, and the artists collectively created 150 paintings depicting a variety of scenes, including streetscapes, orchards and vineyards, West and East Grand Traverse Bay, the historic Village and Grand Traverse Commons, and more.

For the first time ever, the collection of Paint Grand Traverse artwork was available online, giving collectors a socially-distanced and convenient way to shop. Following the exclusively online sale, we hosted a four-week exhibition (with safety measures in place) and enjoyed brisk traffic and sales.

We are deeply grateful for the Paint Grand Traverse artists, sponsors, fans, volunteers, and art buyers who made this year’s pandemic-adapted event a success! And we are looking forward to PGT 2021, knowing that whatever current events are and whatever format it takes, it will be a celebration of artistry and the Grand Traverse region’s beauty. ~ Megan Kelto CTAC-Traverse City Site Director

We also adapted our Pint-Sized Paint Out for kids for the times, inviting young artists ages 0-15 to paint en plein air from wherever they were, and exhibiting their masterpieces online. Cash prizes were awarded to twelve young artists, generously supported by Richard and Susan Bingham.

Working Together

Crooked Tree Arts Center is moving to thematic visual arts programming this fall, with our exhibit and outreach offerings focusing on ideas of connection, community, and working together.

Art does not exist alone. Art, and how we experience it, is informed by what came before it and what surrounds it.

Today's art influences and informs the art of tomorrow, and the circumstances of tomorrow will change the way we look at the art of today — and on and on it goes. Similarly, artists are part of this web of connection. As artists, we respond to the world around us. We respond to the artwork we engage with, the people we interact with, and the teachers and mentors from whom we learn. It is essential to connect in these ways to grow as artists.

2020 has been a profoundly unique and challenging year. The pandemicrelated shutdowns, required social distancing, and cultural divides our nation has faced in recent months have bred feelings of isolation. Now more than ever, we need to find ways to connect. We need to reach out to our neighbors, truly listen, hear, and respect those whose opinions may differ from our own; and work together through our challenges. Our exhibits this semester consider, question, and reflect these ideas.

CTAC has always been about community, and we’re continuing to find ways to bring people together during these unusual times. We hope you will join us for virtual conversations about art in our Coffee @ Ten series, or learn something new through an exclusive behind-the-scenes demonstration during our In the Studio virtual events. We now offer an assortment of online classes and workshops, too. For those who prefer an in-person experience, class sizes have been limited, and measures have been put in place to ensure a safe, inspiring, and enriching experience for students and instructors. Our galleries remain free and open to the public, and we have online exhibits for those who cannot visit us in person. However you choose to connect with us this fall, know that we’re here for you.

On the Wall

The Art Tree Sales Gallery in Petoskey, managed by Inventory Specialist Madison Pionk, and The Shop in Traverse City, supervised by Galleries Associate Monica Stokes, both brim with the work of dozens of artists with strong ties to Michigan. To celebrate and promote them, we’re kicking off a new artist feature series - On the Wall - with T.L. Baumhardt and Rebecca Deneau.

T.L. Baumhardt T.L. Baumhardt’s background in art stems from growing up in an artistic household, where, as a young child, she discovered her passion for creativity and art.

At first, drawing did not come

easily, but with persistence and a bit of formal training in college, Baumhardt developed her own unique style. Greatly influenced and inspired by fairies and nature, her artwork often depicts a balanced relationship between realism and imaginative whimsy.

Although she grew up downstate, Baumhardt has lived in Petoskey for nearly twenty years. It’s here that she’s put down some artistic roots: “I feel deeply connected to the land in Northern Michigan - the flora, fauna, and fungi, the water and stones - it is truly a magical place to live and provides such an abundance of rich and delicate inspiration that is often the basis for my creativity.”

Baumhardt’s notecards, prints, and one-of-a-kind watercolors are interspersed throughout the gallery for patron and art collector’s pleasure. “What I love best about selling and sharing my artwork is the sense of bringing joy to others and making connections - it’s a kind of circle of joy. It is also affirming when people buy my artwork, but as an artist, I’ve come to a personal understanding that being creative and focusing on the work itself needs to be the priority, and then hopefully all of the other good stuff will follow.”

Rebecca Deneau A modern Impressionist oil painter, Rebecca Deneau fell in love with her preferred medium at a young age. “I took my first painting classes as a teen at a local art league in the Chicago area, where I grew up, and my love for painting eventually led me to study art in college.” Despite growing up in the metropolitan area of Chicago, Illinois, Deneau has a very close tie to Traverse City, as it happens to be her husband’s hometown. For the past seventeen years, Deneau has called Traverse City home, citing the relaxed pace, people, and beautiful landscape of Northern Michigan as some of her favorite features. CTAC is thrilled to feature Deneau’s lovely Impressionistic oil paintings, just as she is ecstatic to find homes for her work: “There is nothing better than hearing from a collector that their new painting is bringing them joy every day!”

Inspire & Enrich

EXHIBITIONS • DEMOS • WORKSHOPS  Call and Response

Through December 18 Bonfield Gallery, Petoskey Art has the power to communicate, inspiring and contributing to meaningful dialogue and the exchange of ideas. Call and Response explores this notion, recognizing the many ways works of art can spark conversation, action, and aid in the processing of ideas, feelings, experiences, and events.

 The Collective Impulse Through December 18 Gilbert Gallery, Petoskey

Artists continuously collect information and materials, then sort through it and make connections. These day-today mental and physical activities are all part of their studio practice. This practice of collecting and connecting is self-evident in the work of Michigan artists Ruth Bardenstein, Jean Buescher, and Susan Moran.

 EDUCATION This fall, CTAC-Petoskey’s visual arts classes for youth and adults were offered both in-person and online. Class offerings included pottery with Jim Beckering, watercolor with Trish Morgan and Spencer Meagher, and courses dedicated to the anatomy of flowers and trees with Svetlana Ottney. Artists Kathie Carpenter, Marilyn Hoogstraten, Kathy Silbernagel, and Babs Young have shared an interest in photography for years. These friends take photographs together, share work with one another, and come together periodically through collaborative exhibitions of their work. Though their individual creative work may explore different subjects or themes, all four artists frequently create images that capture and consider the intrinsic power and nuances of color.

One, Together recognizes the power of collective creativity. Though the act of making art is often thought of as individual and solitary, many artists rely on a regular exchange of ideas with fellow artists and mentors in order to keep their creative practice going.

This exhibition explores collaboration, collectivity, and togetherness through creative practice.

Online $10, Free for Members This virtual program, rolled out in Summer 2020, brings you into the creative spaces of artists working near and far. During each unique live event, artists provide a brief art demonstration or lesson and participate in a Q&A session facilitated by CTAC staff. Designed for artists and art appreciators alike, In the Studio… is approachable and educational, providing motivation for getting back to work in your own creative space!

With a focus on jazz, rock, and ukulele, and new instructors!

Owen James

Instrumental soloist, worship leader at the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey, and annual Concert in the Park performer alongside partner Maya Story, Owen James leads the Crooked Tree Jazz Combo and Crooked Tree Jazz Lab Band on Tuesday afternoons and evenings. Owen, a former private instructor at CTAC, studied jazz at the University of Miami and has performed all over the U.S., sharing the stage with many jazz greats.

Ean Greer A 2019 graduate of Petoskey High School’s marching, jazz, and steel drum band programs, local musician Ean Greer assists Owen James with both CTAC jazz offerings.

Greer has played jazz on piano, bass, and drumset for the past seven years, and has particular passions for singing, punk rock, yoga, meditation, and cooking. Before the pandemic, he completed his freshman year at the Young Americans College of the Performing Arts in California.

Crooked Tree Jazz Combo follows in the tradition of small to medium-sized ensembles that have created much of the core repertoire throughout jazz history. Through the study, practice, and performance of these essential Jazz, Latin, and modern “standards,” Jazz Combo members will improve their playing ability, develop their solo improvisational skills, and expand their knowledge of music theory and jazz harmony. For students of high school age and up. All instruments are welcome.

Crooked Tree Jazz Lab Band is an introductory jazz ensemble for middle and high school students. Students in the Lab Band will learn the basics of jazz style, improvisation, and music theory. Musical selections range from classic jazz standards to modern pop and rock tunes. Lab Band member spots are available for piano, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as any woodwind or brass instruments.

Jazz Band Chris Koury Guitarist, adjunct professor at North Central Michigan College, and member of Northern Michigan band, The Easy Picks, Chris Koury helms the Crooked Tree Garage Band on Wednesdays. With his one-on-one and collegiate level teaching experience and extensive performance resume, Koury expertly guides students as they experiment and finetune their rock and roll sound and personas.

Crooked Tree Garage Band covers a large swath of the “rock” genre landscape with its musical selections and helps students develop and work within a band dynamic, sharing responsibilities within the arrangements and supporting each other as musicians.

Band members learn how their individual contributions fit into the whole experience. Vocalists, guitarists (bass included), keyboardists, and drummers are all welcome!

Garage Band

Begining Ukulele

Abbey Byrne Singer, Crooked Tree Garage Band member, and high school senior, Abbey Byrne instructs beginner students on how to play the ukulele.

Byrne also fronts the local band, The Third Degree, which performed at the 2020 New Year’s Eve @ the Arts Center. Byrne intends to keep music at the forefront of her life, studying Music Therapy and Jazz Vocals in college.

Beginning Ukulele is for students with no prior experience playing the ukulele. Students will learn how to hold the ukulele, make and change simple chord shapes with their left hand, and count basic rhythms and strumming patterns. For students ages eight and up with instruction for soprano, concert, or tenor ukuleles.

or the 2020 Virtual Fall Session, the CTAC School of Ballet offered 23 classes per week to six levels of ballet, including Beginning Ballet, Beginning/ Intermediate Ballet, Intermediate Ballet, Intermediate/Advanced Ballet, Pre-Professional Ballet, and Adult Ballet, as well as three levels of Dance Fusion.

Our dedicated and talented School of Ballet teaching staff consists of ten professionals, most of whom are alums of our program. The teaching staff includes Heather Raue, Karrie Benedict, Esmae Gold, Haley Van Patten, Hannah Bianchi, Ellie Esford, Bri Wilson, Emily McGeehan, Taylor Naturkas, and Joel Erdmann.

Looking ahead The School of Ballet is beginning to prepare for an exciting performance of The Nutcracker this December. With unknowns surrounding the coming seasons, the School of Ballet has decided to put on a screendance version of The Nutcracker with a unique “Up North� theme, highlighting the beautiful area with a fresh new approach to the story.

Peter Sparling, Professor Emeritus of Dance at the University of Michigan, and one of the pioneers of screendance, will be assisting in this exciting undertaking.

Children and parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents and friends, will be delighted to enjoy this cherished holiday tradition from the coziness of their own homes or during a special one-night in-person screening of The Nutcracker on Saturday, December 19.

The annual Sugar Plum Fairy Tea will also move forward with a re-imagined plan. This beautiful event always brings lovers of ballet and The Nutcracker together for a memorable experience.

Russian through the NSLI-Y program.

“Learning Russian was the hardest academic thing I have ever done,” said Baron. “I extremely enjoyed the amount of work I had to put in every day to keep up with my nine classmates. As well, I have a new understanding of Russian culture.” This coming January, Baron will have the opportunity to reapply to the NSLI-Y program and to audition for the Bolshoi Ballet once again.

ALEXANDRA BARON From “The Tree” to the Forrest

Pre-Professional dancers strive to perfect their skills and technique in the studio and on stage, with goals of joining renowned schools, landing positions in elite dance companies, and teaching the next generation of dancers.

Charlevoix resident Alexandra Baron, 16, has been dancing with the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet for the past eight years, refining her repertoire and growing as a dancer and an individual, under the tutelage of Artistic Director Heather Raue and instructor Karrie Benedict. During those years, Baron filled numerous roles on stage, backstage, and in the classroom, but 2020, even with all of its unknowns, has been a particularly pivotal year for her.

Summer intensives - like the one Baron had been accepted to - are experiences that help young dancers test their abilities, pushing them to try new techniques, and introducing them to other aspects of the dance world in unfamiliar places. “Each intensive I’ve attended has shaped me into a better dancer and person. My first summer intensive at age 12 opened my eyes to the amount of dedication and hard work it takes to become the best dancer you can be. I have been exposed to many different ballet styles and other forms of dance. Each year, my knowledge and skill level improves from having new teachers and working with students from all around the world,” said Baron.

This fall, after nearly a decade with the School of Ballet, Baron was accepted into the Forrest Academy of Ballet yearround program in New York City, which focuses on the Vaganova technique. She is currently dividing her time between virtual ballet instruction and online high school classes. Looking back on her experiences over the years, Baron recognizes the growth she’s experienced here in Petoskey, and through her summer intensive opportunities around

the country, which have been direct results of her dedication to her art form.

Now, with the new phase of her dance education underway, Baron leaves us with a touching testimony to the School of Ballet: “The CTAC School of Ballet means family to me. I have made lifelong connections with my peers and teachers. Ms. Heather especially has shaped me into the person I am today. From giving me challenging roles to being her teacher’s assistant, Ms. Heather has always pushed me out of my comfort zone, which always kept me striving to improve. Having teachers at the CTAC School of Ballet that truly care about you as a dancer and person makes the work environment such a positive place to be and creates dancers who love what they do. I will always be truly grateful for everything the School of Ballet has given me.”

After a successful audition season in Chicago this past winter, Baron was accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet Academy summer intensive, among other programs. Once accepted, she made plans to also participate in a three-week National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program in New York City, which focuses on bringing Americans to Russia to be immersed in their language and culture. From New York City, Baron would travel on a full scholarship to Russia to study at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow and rigorously learn the Russian language.

If you happen to patronize Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC), either regularly or sporadically, there’s a good chance you’ve met CTAC members Joe and Karen Kimmell, the ever-active attendees of Swirls, concerts, fundraisers, and exhibit openings. I met the Kimmells back in 2013 when I was just a summer employee at the front desk, but it wasn’t until dining on crêpes during a culinary class three years later that I got to know them and their passion for art and our community.

Joe, a retired lawyer and the current Chairman of CTAC’s Board of Directors, and Karen, a former educator and thriving plein air artist, reside in Lake Charlevoix and are two of the most tireless volunteers and down-to-earth art collectors you’ll ever meet.

Many people are introduced to the arts at a young, impressionable age, but it was during their college years that the Kimmells each began to develop an interest and passion for the arts.

While at law school, Joe encountered Adventures in Good Music, a radio program hosted by Karl Haas, which endeared classical music to him. And for Karen, she became utterly smitten with painting while on a study abroad in Amsterdam: “I still remember the first time I stood in front of a Rembrandt,” said Karen. “I came to realize then that art made me happy.” As a couple, the Kimmells spent most of their 35 years in

Fort Wayne, Indiana, as active members of arts organizations, supporting music, dance, and the visual arts. “I consider the fine arts to be a critical part of any meaningful life experience,” said Joe, “and arts education and training vital parts of what should be passed on to younger generations.”

After retiring and moving to Northern Michigan, a favorite summer vacation spot of theirs, both Joe and Karen became involved with CTAC right away - each in their own ways. As an appreciator of the arts, Joe joined CTAC’s board and has served on the finance and endowment committees since 2011. An artist with a predilection for oils and soft pastels, Karen became a member of the Kitchen Painters, now known as the CTAC Painters Studio, and has been an exhibiting artist, donating

A part of CTAC for many years, the Kimmells have enjoyed meeting new people, making friends, and witnessing the art organization’s growth in the Traverse City area, especially the inception of Paint Grand Traverse, the annual plein air event. However, what stands out for Joe is how CTAC traversed 2020. “Without question, my favorite memory is, and always will be, the amazing way our staff responded to the challenges of this last summer,” said Joe. “The executive team and board were able to navigate through the financial maze to procure vital funding, and most impressively, our staff was able to devise ways of providing online education and hold our key fundraising events virtually and successfully.”

With such successful pivoting in our very recent past, Joe and Karen hope to see both CTAC’s presence in Traverse City and our virtual offerings continue to grow, thus solidifying our reputation as a regional arts organization in Michigan and beyond the mitten’s borders. “There has always been a wide variety of programs, events, and outreach for all ages at CTAC,” said Karen. “And the staff has been especially creative with the offerings during the pandemic - I’m certain this creative spirit will continue on.”

CTAC looks forward to the coming two years of Joe guiding the board of directors and Karen’s continued presence in classes, workshops, and exhibits — hopefully, if you haven’t already, you’ll get to meet the Kimmells soon, whether at a CTAC event or over a warm crêpe.

TR AVERSE CITY

“ASLD approached me and asked if I would be willing to teach an online class through Zoom, and since I’d never taught that way, the learning curve for me was steep. But, we got it together, and I taught my first online class in June,” said Griggs. “It is such a great way to help people learn watercolor and have a creative outlet during such an uncertain time.” Teaching online workshops and offering one-on-one private lessons has allowed Griggs to work with inexperienced and professional students from Oregon to Maine. And now, he’ll be able to connect with students in Northern Michigan via his one-hour virtual workshops each month with CTAC through May 2021.

STEVE GRIGGS

Traverse City Instructor Instructor and watercolor artist Steve Griggs first became involved with CTAC-TC through Paint Grand Traverse (PGT) in 2019, where he met delightful artists, connected with art appreciators, and enjoyed working with CTAC staff in the beautiful Grand Traverse region. As a Michigan native, originally from the metro-Detroit area, Griggs is always striving to stay connected to the artist community in his home state, and now, even though he resides in Denver, Colorado, he is the newest addition to CTAC’s teaching faculty, thanks to technology and virtual programming.

With a great love of teaching and sharing his knowledge and experience, Griggs has taught numerous in-person workshops through the Colorado Watercolor Society, the Art Students League of Denver (ASLD), and almost every art club or guild in Colorado. “I always tell people to bring an abundant sense of humor to my workshops because I tell a lot of stupid jokes and, more importantly, because my style of painting isn’t easy! I push people out of their comfort zones by asking them to paint in ways most have never really tried,” said Griggs. During his workshops, Griggs plays music, promotes laughter, has students share their work, and when all is said and done, each artist 20

takes home a few paintings they’re proud to display. Griggs’ goal in teaching is to encourage, provide helpful feedback, and always point out something good in an artist’s work.

Holding degrees in Studio Art from Michigan State University and Industrial Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Griggs has been showing his art and entering juried exhibitions for almost 20 years.

In 2018, he transitioned his career to a full-time painter, but art has always been a present aspect of Griggs’ life. “My love of art started early in life. While other children would lament field trips to the art museum, that was my favorite day of the school year!” As an elementary student, Griggs’ mom bought him his first real watercolor set, and his love for the medium was born. One of many in a large family, he found it difficult to find time and space to paint growing up, so the basement became an artistic refuge where Griggs would create artwork that he never showed to anyone. He was a self-proclaimed ‘closet artist’ until his college years. Between then and now, Griggs has exhibited work, co-written articles on watercolor, won numerous awards for his art, and taught extensively.

And as the pandemic began to hit hard this past spring, Griggs found himself not only teaching more workshops but also bringing students, virtually, into his workspace.

Aside from teaching, Griggs holds membership with the National Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society, and Michigan Watercolor Society, and has signature membership with Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Society and Colorado Watercolor Society.

And he is an avid plein air painter, whose paintings often reflect his love of the Great Lakes region. Griggs and his art are represented by Michigan establishments, Twisted Fish in Elk Rapids, and J. Petter Galleries in Douglas.
