A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT A NEW SEASON

Crooked Tree Arts Center is bustling with energy as we head into summer. With the changing season, we welcome new possibilities for growth. The winter months have given us time to plan and prepare for some exciting changes ahead, including a new strategic vision, mission statement, and a change in leadership.

In April, we bid farewell to our former president, Megan DeWindt, who has been with CTAC for nearly 13 years, serving the last four as president. Megan has done tremendous work for the organization and the community, so it was bittersweet saying goodbye. She is leaving the organization on a positive trajectory for the future, and I look forward to continuing the amazing work she has done along with our staff and your support. While I have met many of you over my last year with CTAC, I am excited for the opportunity to meet many more of our incredible friends and supporters over the summer!

After a surprising start to the new year with a major flood in our Petoskey location, we are happy to report that we are back to fully operational thanks to the dedication of our team, Board of Directors, and the restoration crew. Our gallery floors have been refinished, and the pottery studio is fully restored. The theater also underwent a facelift with fresh paint, and new carpet is on the horizon. Thank you for being patient with us as we navigated construction and rescheduling of events and classes..

This summer, we’re excited to offer new and unique kids camps through several new partnerships with local organizations including Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, Top of Michigan Trails Council, and the Little Traverse Conservancy. In Traverse City, we doubled the amount of offerings for kids camps, and the demand remains high. The School of Ballet continues to provide exceptional pre-professional ballet opportunities. Join us in congratulating our dancers on their summer intensive placements at some of the

leading national and international dance schools. We’re thrilled to continue to offer this important programming to support youth and parents in our community!

Inside our galleries, we are bringing dynamic and multifaceted cultural exhibitions to Petoskey, including Michigan: An American Portrait, which explores the history, identity, and environment of our state, and Horizons: Landscapes and Figures by Robert and Susan Perrish. In Traverse City, our team has been expanding their exhibition calendar to provide even more exhibitions throughout the year. This summer, the location is hosting exciting exhibitions, such as Paint Grand Traverse Extended Exhibition, New Vistas: Emerging Northern Michigan Painters and Printmakers, and Clay in Space

Along with our classes and exhibits, we continue to offer free concerts and events throughout the summer, including Coffee @ 10 lectures, Open Studio, Concerts in the Park, Live on the Bidwell concerts, and more.

Two of our favorite events of the year are also coming up soon – Paint Grand Traverse and Dart for Art! From plein air painting on the beach to darting for your favorite piece of art, these events celebrate the arts with hundreds of people from across the country. I encourage you to attend PGT’s Fresh Paint Party to add a one-of-a-kind masterpiece to your collection, and while the main event for Dart sold out in record time, tickets remain for Preview Night. We hope to see you there!

Judith Koza

CTAC

Founding Member

June 5, 1938 - October 23, 2023

This past October, Judith (Judie) Koza, the last living founding member of Crooked Tree Arts Center, passed away. In 1971, arts advocates Sally Clark, Edith Gilbert, Grace Jessop, eddi Offield, Jack Perry, Carolyn Rader, and Judie Koza met at the Petoskey Public Library and established a community organization for the arts. Judie, and the rest of the founding members, developed the foundation of CTAC and worked hard to bring their vision to life. Their strategy, dedication, and love for providing arts opportunities for those in Northern Michigan made CTAC what it is today.

Judie’s husband, Ed, was a founding member of the Little Traverse Conservancy and passed away in December 2022. Ed and Judie had active lives in their communities of Chicago and Northern Michigan, always looking for ways to further contribute to the growth and strength of our region while connecting people along the way.

“One of the gifts of small-town living is seeing people in different ways in the community. I first met Judie in Crooked Tree Arts Center’s early years when I won an award in a photo contest. Her talents were many and she used them well. Her grandchildren and our boys were the same ages and I marveled at the sweaters Judie knitted for the girls. Listening to her play the recorder in Bay View was a moment when I realized that artistic gifts can come to one person in many ways. Her smile

was huge and she knew everyone by name. What a lucky woman to have made such an impact on others — most of us don’t leave this earth having done that.”

Dr. Bill Millar

Former Chairman of the Board of Directors and Volunteer Extraordinaire

April 21, 1936 - March 4, 2024

Dr. Bill Millar, former Chairman of CTAC’s Board of Directors, passed away in March 2024. Bill, along with his wife Jane, were major contributors to the success of Crooked Tree Arts Center. Leading through example, Bill closely engaged with and supported many CTAC programs, including our performing arts series, visual art exhibitions, CTAC School of Ballet, and so much more. We will miss his love for jazz, his visits to the office after clay classes, and his commitment to the arts. Bill was not just a supporter; he was a beloved member of our community and a dear friend to all at CTAC.

“I met my good friend Bill Millar on one of my earliest days working at Crooked Tree Arts Center. During our first meeting, Bill proudly informed me that it had been his job to hang the art in the CTAC galleries for many years and that he would show me the best way to measure and install a show. To make it even more memorable, the organization’s president at the time was also named Liz, so Bill quickly adopted a new name for me, to avoid any confusion. I became ‘Little Liz.’

Inviting Bill Millar to help hang an exhibition was just the beginning for the new me – ‘Little Liz’. But it didn’t stop there. For nearly six years, Bill has been my righthand man in the galleries. He always showed up with his own tools, complete with plumb bob and bluetooth speaker. Bill was our official DJ, and jazz was always his go-to. As we worked, Bill would share his favorite recordings with me while recounting personal stories from his long, full, and rich life.

Bill took great pride in his role here, and he personified the most beautiful and important parts of Crooked Tree Arts Center. He lived a long, impactful life, and I’m so grateful he shared some of it with us. He will be greatly missed.”

Celebrate the arts with Crooked Tree Arts Center's premier summer fundraiser on Wednesday, July 10, and Thursday, July 11, in downtown Bay Harbor. This year's featured artist, Neil W. Ahrens has created a masterpiece to serve as inspiration for the event. His featured artwork, Striation Horizon, will be auctioned off on stage at Dart for Art. Proceeds benefit CTAC's mission... it's a party with a purpose!

The Main Event on Thursday, July 11, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, will wow guests with delectable dining, unique auction items, and astounding artwork in the Dart Gallery. Enjoy cocktail hour with appetizers by featured chefs, top-shelf bar, gourmet seated dinner, silent and live auctions, entertainment, and everyone's favorite part of the evening —"darting" for your choice of artwork to take home from the Dart Gallery.

What is "darting?" | The Dart for Art Gallery features more than 200 pieces of original artwork, including paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, glasswork, and more! Ticket-holders will get to select a work of art when their artist name is called — the order in which art is selected is the luck of the draw! When your name is called, you will run ("dart") and grab your piece of artwork off the wall!

Neil W. Ahrens, a dedicated artist with a strong connection to his craft, has been chosen as the featured artist for Dart for Art 2024. His painting, Striation Horizons, will serve as the inspiration for the evening.

A graduate of Michigan State University, Ahrens went on to receive his master's degree in fine arts from the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. His journey as an artist is deeply rooted in Northern Michigan, where he has resided for nearly 25 years. Drawing inspiration from the local landscapes, particularly the lakes, Ahrens creates abstract paintings reflecting the peaceful essence of his surroundings.

Neil, along with his wife and former CTAC President Liz, have transformed their Harbor Springs home into a vibrant artistic hub, hosting a gallery, studio, and guest home for visiting artists-in-residence called Ahrens Gallery and Studio. Having chosen to make Northern Michigan home, Neil and Liz Ahrens have become foundational figures in the community, playing integral roles in bringing exceptional exhibitions to area galleries, developing a culture that appreciates art, and supporting arts education. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Neil W. Ahrens has had a varied career working in schools as an educator, as an Emmet County Commissioner, and as a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Husband and wife artists Robert and Susan Perrish have distinctly different artistic voices, but both painters take a romanticist approach to contemporary subjects. Idyllic rural scenes of Michigan and imaginative and fanciful figurative works intermingle in the gallery, encouraging viewers to see our world in new ways.

This exhibition re-envisions the PBS documentary film Michigan: An American Portrait as a dynamic interdisciplinary art exhibition. The show looks at the history, people, and natural environment of the state of Michigan as a way to explore relationships between place, identity, and the human experience. Original works of art by Michigan artists will be on display.

Michigan has many unique habitats and is home to many endangered and special species of plants. Upper Peninsula artist Carol Irving’s woven series of Michigan’s endangered wildflowers will bring attention to their threatened and sometimes endangered status.

INDIGENOUS BITES: MANOOMIN, MICHIGAN’S STATE GRAIN

As of December 2023, Manoomin is now officially the state grain of Michigan. This presentation by Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians curriculum specialist, Amanda Weinert, shares the history of the grain and why it is important.

Bakpak Durden is a self-taught artist from Detroit. Through extensive research, introspective examination, and an anti-disciplinary approach, Durden creates work exploring human consciousness and spiritual existence, fusing narrative and visual elements of the baroque and afro-surrealist movements.

Founded 21 years ago by Artistic Director Heather Raue, the CTAC School of Ballet has been training young people in Northern Michigan for careers as professional dancers and artists. Each year our students receive acceptances, upon audition, to attend summer intensive programs at most of the leading national and international dance schools. Additionally, our program has landed talented students professional contracts, launched students into BFA and MFA programs and dance-related careers. This year has been exceptionally phenomenal for our students and alums with record-breaking acceptances and promotions at these leading dance programs and companies.

ALUMNA TAYLOR NATURKAS RECEIVES PROMOTION TO PRINCIPAL SOLOIST WITH MIAMI CITY BALLET!

Taylor Naturkas grew up dancing with the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet starting at the age of four, under the direction of Heather Raue. In the fall of 2018, she began studying at Miami City Ballet School year-round at the age of 15. Taylor has quickly moved up the ranks of the company, receiving her Corps De Ballet contract in 2020, and was promoted to Soloist two years later in 2022. Taylor received her promotion to Principal Soloist following her debut performance as Firebird with the company on February 10, 2024. Taylor is the youngest Principal Soloist with the company, and also one of Miami City Ballet’s youngest company dancers.

Tell us your CTAC “origin story.” When and how did you get involved with Crooked Tree Arts Center?

Growing up in Petoskey, Crooked Tree Arts Center has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My parents, Alan and Audrey Secrest, always prioritized the arts for my homeschooling, a tradition we carry on in homeschooling our children. I remember seeing shows at the CTAC, taking drawing classes, and playing violin in what became the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program.

How does your family engage with CTAC? What classes do you take?

After seeing a performance of The Nutcracker by CTAC School of Ballet at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, I wanted our kids to be able to experience that firsthand, even though we now live an hour away. Soon enough, one ballet class a week for our first little aspiring ballerina has evolved into four days a week of multiple levels of ballet for four dancers, various art and clay classes, and Rock Jam with Big Water Creative Arts. With that, our family is moving closer to Petoskey this spring!

What is your family’s favorite part of being members of CTAC?

It feels wonderful to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community of artistic individuals. We are immensely grateful to all the passionate teachers at CTAC for investing their time and talents into our children. Witnessing the results of the children's ambition, combined with the care of their instructors,

has been a truly rewarding experience!

We all enjoy visiting the gallery to see the ever-changing, beautiful displays of artwork, and it's always a pleasure to run into Jason who is always so friendly and does a great job keeping the place running!

Over the years, what has been your family’s favorite CTAC memory?

Personally, one of my favorite moments every year is the Waltz of the Snowflakes. The ballerinas dancing in the sparkling, falling snow in their

come on! How beautiful! It makes me feel like a little kid every time. I have goosebumps just thinking about it. Then, seeing our kids up on that stage getting better and better every year; it's an exciting and unforgettable experience!

Why are the arts important to your family?

Where to start? We love the brain and motor skills development for our kids, the self-confidence that performance brings, the problem-solving, discipline, and concentration. All great stuff! But what pulls me in the most is the joy of it. It feels great when I can make something beautiful, and when I can use my talents to contribute something. I want that for my kids, too. Whether dancing, painting, playing music, or getting covered in clay, it's just plain fun.

Tell us your CTAC “origin story.” When and how did you get involved with Crooked Tree Arts Center?

After relocating to Traverse City from the Detroit area, where I had previously taught elementary art in the Grosse Pointe school district, I actively pursued teaching opportunities. However, I knew I didn't want to commit to a full-time teaching position.

My initial encounter with Kristi was during the Community Printmaking Day featuring a steam roller. This event sparked our collaboration and ignited a series of brainstorming sessions. Together, we explored ideas to strike a balance between family life with a young family and my unwavering passion for teaching.

LAURA ADAMS TRAVERSE CITY

How do you engage with CTAC? What classes do you teach?

For the past couple of years, I've been deeply engaged with Crooked Tree Arts Center - Traverse City’s preschool art programming. Beginning this fall, I renamed the preschool class to Preschool Process Art. This class focuses on the process itself, prioritizing play and sensory learning experiences. Since implementing this change, the program's engagement has more than doubled, leading us to add a second class each week to accommodate the increased interest.

Additionally, my children have actively participated in Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Summer Art Camps, Afterschool Art sessions, and Saturday drawing workshops led by Richie Gunn.

What is your favorite part of being a member of CTAC?

I enjoy the diverse array of opportunities available at CTAC, all of which foster engagement for individuals of all ages. From the vibrant Drop-In Art sessions held every Saturday to the plein-air Paint Grand Traverse events, and the captivating openings of our exhibitions, there's truly something for everyone to enjoy and participate in.

Over the years, what has been your favorite CTAC memory?

One of my favorite memories is witnessing my children participate in the Paint Grand Traverse Pint-Size Paintout. The event was beautifully orchestrated, allowing my kids to feel like genuine artists as they worked with the watercolor sets they received, which they used throughout the summer.

Another standout experience was attending the Birds of Prey summer art camp in 2023. The highlight was when North Sky Raptor visited our classroom for an engaging presentation. Witnessing my children's enthusiasm during the presentation, and then seeing them channel that firsthand experience into their artwork, was truly special. It was inspiring to watch them express themselves creatively, drawing from their newfound knowledge and passion for the birds.

Why are the arts important to you (and your family)?

Where do I start? From a young age, creativity and self-expression were a fundamental part of

my upbringing. This foundation stayed with me as I pursued my studies at Wayne State University, where I earned my master's degree in Art Therapy. Art provides the power to tap into the soul. It is a powerful tool for processing emotions and experiences unlike anything else. Today’s world is very technical and there is incredible value in expressing yourself with your hands in a way that the digital world cannot replicate.

Art allows us to slow down, to pause amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. It provides a space for reflection and contemplation, allowing us to digest the complexities of the world around us. It plays a vital role in the lives of children, especially for those who may not gravitate towards sports. Every community needs spaces where children can explore their creativity and be celebrated for their unique talents and perspectives. Art offers a nurturing environment where children can discover their strengths, express themselves authentically, and develop a sense of belonging and accomplishment.

This June, CTAC’s plein air painting festival will be back and better than ever, with a full week of landscape painting, live demonstrations, activities for kids, art sales, classes, parties, and community events! Now in its seventh year, Paint Grand Traverse will kick off Summer 2024 with 32 featured artists from across the country. They’ll spend the week being inspired by the summer magic of Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula, Leelanau County, and the Lake Michigan coastline. More than 200 paintings will be created, each one capturing a special place and moment in Northern Michigan.

Whether you are a novice, a professional, or a wanna-be, this week is jam-packed with opportunities to engage and get a behind-thescenes view of the life of a plein air artist.

We will have artist demos Monday through Thursday, where you can learn more about their equipment, approach, and style. Pop in the galleries to cool off and get a sneak peek at each artist’s display to see some of the artwork that they brought from home. The week winds down with the newly named Fresh Paint Party, where you can join the celebration as we reveal the entire collection. Our awards juror will announce awards at 5:30 pm, so you will want to get a purchase award to have the first opportunity to get your hands on an awardwinning painting. Once a painting is purchased, you are welcome to take the painting home with you. No waiting until the end of the exhibit. Something to brag about all summer!
