A Long History of Supporting the Arts BOB AND CHARLOTTE STREIT, art enthusiasts, maple syrup tappers, and owners of Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, Michigan, are great supporters and appreciators of the arts. Over the years they have worked hard to grow and expand the arts in Northern Michigan, as well as Crooked Tree Arts Center’s outreach.
“Art makes life fun, cheerful, and affords us opportunities to focus on something other than the everyday concerns and troubles we face. We get to step into another world for a time and get away from the doom and gloom.”
Bob graduated from Notre Dame in 1962 as an accounting major and joined Ernst & Ernst where he worked for 37 years. During his time with the firm, Bob lived in Chicago, New York, and St. Louis – cities that afforded him exposure to the fine arts, including music, dance, and the visual arts. While Bob’s connection to art is that of a spectator, his wife Charlotte took a more hands-on approach as a painter, singer, and pianist. Perpetual arts patrons, Bob and Charlotte found a new way of supporting the arts in the late 90s. After making a real estate investment in Elk Rapids in 1998, the Streits were approached by a second party about opening an art gallery on the property. This proposal led to the birth of Twisted Fish Gallery, which Bob and Charlotte soon took over and have been running ever since. Early on, the Streits predominately displayed representational artwork, but over the years their preference shifted to nonrepresentational art. No matter one’s preference “your favorite artwork should be the one that makes you jump inside…makes you take a quick breath,” said Bob. This is the kind of art he fills Twisted Fish Gallery with – fantastic local art that makes his and his patrons’ breath catch. As a new gallery owner, Bob became involved with Art Center Traverse City (ACTC) in the early 2000s. What started out as simple research into the Northwestern Michigan art scene, morphed into a deeper relationship; Bob joined Art Center Traverse City’s board of directors and served for a decade, doing his part to promote the work of local and regional artists. While on the board of ACTC, Bob frequently visited Crooked Tree, and through his appreciation of the organization, he used CTAC as a model for ACTC. Later on, still holding Crooked Tree in high regard, Bob and fellow ACTC board member Paul LaPorte met with CTAC to discuss how the two arts organizations could better work together. After exploring possible avenues, they came to an unexpected conclusion: let’s not just cooperate, let’s merge. Crooked Tree absorbed Art Center Traverse City in January 2015, and Bob Streit, a huge force in bringing the merger to fruition, now serves on the CTAC board. Always looking forward, Bob appreciates CTAC’s vision for the future and its plan to grow. As a board member, Bob hopes to help CTAC take steps toward becoming a nationally recognized arts center. In his eyes, “we could do better—we can always do better.” This mentality, coupled with his business savvy and experience, will be invaluable in helping to increase the Arts Center’s endowment. Bob’s goal is for the organization to not be held back by annual budget constraints, but rather, be allowed to reach its potential. But why support and grow the arts anyway? When asked, Bob had this to share: “Art makes life fun, cheerful, and affords us opportunities to focus on something other than the everyday concerns and troubles we face. We get to step into another world for a time and get away from the doom and gloom.” Art creates opportunities to build relationships, bring people together, and to provide a meaningful distraction from the chaos around us. Through their hard work and love of art, Bob and Charlotte Streit have done their part to nurture these opportunities that art provides our Northern Michigan communities.

FROM ºLIZ AHRENS — PRESIDENT Dear CTAC Members: You’ll frequently hear me say at a CTAC event, “Look around this room— we have five former Presidents in attendance!” And I’m not kidding. CTAC is blessed to have so many individuals who have served as board members, committee members and officers. And we are so fortunate, as many people continue to stay engaged in CTAC long after their official duties are past. I’d like to honor one of our former Presidents, Jane Lent, who sadly passed away in December. Jane and her husband Dick, a former CTAC Treasurer, volunteered hundreds of hours for CTAC. We are grateful for their kindness and generosity throughout many decades. I am so lucky...I have known all but two of these dedicated arts patrons. And I’ve only been with CTAC since October of 2000.
FIRST ADDRESS FROM NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN – CAROLE CARROLL For me, Crooked Tree Arts Center-Petoskey is not only a beautiful, historic building to be enjoyed for art experiences, varied performances, and educational opportunities, but it is also a place of fellowship and shared arts values, with a warm, inviting atmosphere. Crooked Tree Arts Center-Traverse City, a more contemporary space, is nestled in a historic neighborhood perfect for school children and families to walk to. Many fun events and exhibits are always taking place in both locations.

Next time you are at a CTAC event, look around…you’ll see some of these familiar faces… always standing ready to serve.
Working at the committee level, was my introduction to CTAC. It was at the Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Education, and Finance committee meetings where I learned that volunteers make a real contribution to the programs at CTAC. I love to see all of the children whose lives have been changed by being involved in ballet, the strings and brass programs, art classes, cooking classes, and the multifaceted Youth Arts Festival—these children are our future! CTAC provides art experiences that both challenge and enlighten children as well as adults. Our programming and classes are numerous and varied, all with the emphasis on “ inspiring and enriching lives through the arts.” Your membership, donations, and volunteer efforts are important and appreciated. Please know that your contributions enhance the lives of many in the community. I look forward to the privilege of serving as this wonderful organization’s Chairman of the Board. I hope to see you at many of the events. Sincerely, Carole
