Game Fish Stocking

Rainbow Trout are arguably North America’s premier game fish. Of course, we may be a bit biased. Rainbows are more tolerant of warmer water, making them suited to more ponds than other species of trout. Stocking densities vary with pond conditions and management objectives, common recommendations are around 100 per surface acre. You can boost the growth rate of your Rainbows by feeding Zeigler Gold Floating Trout Feed (p.13). Rainbows are in excellent supply and are available in many sizes. Brook Trout are native to Michigan. Brookies require high water quality and are not tolerant of warm temperatures. When caught, the Brook Trout is a terrific fighter. Stocking densities for Brook Trout vary with pond conditions and management objectives, common recommendations are around 100 per surface acre. Brook Trout availability is limited, advance ordering can help ensure your stocking plans. You can boost the growth rate of your Brookies by feeding Zeigler Gold Floating Trout Feed (P.13) Brown Trout are one of the harder trout to catch because of their eating habits and therefore can be difficult fish to catch in a pond or lake. Browns are similar to Rainbows in their tolerance for warmer water. Stocking densities for Brown Trout vary with pond conditions and management objectives, common recommendations are around 100 per surface acre. Brown Trout availability is limited, advance ordering can help ensure your stocking plans. You can boost the growth rate of your Browns by feeding Zeigler Gold Floating Trout Feed (P.13). Largemouth Bass are one of the most sought after catches. Largemouth are also well suited to most ponds and lakes in the Great Lakes region. Largemouth are tremendous predators and require large amounts of forage to thrive, therefore they are often used to control Bluegill populations. We generally recommend 100 bass per surface acre in ponds with regular bluegill and 75 per acre in Hybrid Sunfish ponds. Largemouth will reproduce in most ponds but require other predators to regulate the bass population properly and avoid overpopulation and stunting. Stocking fathead minnows also provides an excellent forage base for bass. Smallmouth Bass require cool water and prefer rocky substrates to thrive, therefore they are not well suited for most small ponds. Large, deep bodies of water are the best for Smallies. Smallmouth do not usually compete well for food with Largemouth Bass. If no largemouth are present in the lake, we recommend stocking 100 bass per surface acre. Smallmouth availability is limited, advance orders are required. Hybrid Sunfish are a cross between a female Green Sunfish and a male Bluegill, they are often referred to as Hybrid Bluegill. This cross results in a very high percentage of male fish, reducing the reproductive potential of the population. This results in greater growth rates and reduces the opportunity for over-population. These fish are strong feeders, so a robust forage base is necessary. Generally stocked at a rate of 500 per surface acre. “Regular Bluegill are a species native to Michigan and much of the U.S. These fish make an excellent forage base for Largemouth Bass, as well as being a great sport fish and table fare in their own right. Care must be taken to ensure a robust predator population to keep Bluegill in balance and avoid stunting. Stock 100-200 per surface acre, with Largemouth Bass. Black Crappie are a large member of the sunfish family. Like others of this family, they are prolific spawners if they have the correct conditions. They must be balanced with a robust population of larger predators such as bass and catfish. Generally recommended for stocking in larger ponds and lakes at about 100-200 per surface acre. Minimum order of 100, advance order and deposit required on crappie orders. Seasonal availability.

Game Fish Stocking
Yellow Perch are a popular choice for lakes and ponds because of their outstanding table performance. Care must be taken when stocking perch as they tend to over-populate and stunt easily. They are best suited to large lakes with predators like walleye or to “perch ponds that will be managed fairly intensely to maintain a healthy population level. Generally stocking 100-200 per surface acre is acceptable. Walleye are a popular game fish that is native to Michigan. Walleye are best suited to large, deep bodies of water that remain fairly cool. They are voracious predators and require a very robust forage base of minnows, bass, perch, and bluegills to thrive. Walleye stocking densities must be quite light, not more than 25 per surface acre. Well-aerated ponds may be able to hold walleye, but forage may be difficult to maintain in small waters. Minimum order of 100, advance order and deposit required on walleye orders. Seasonal availability. Channel Catfish are omnivores that can add some variety to your pond. Prized as a sport fish and table fare in many areas of the country, the channel cat can be a welcome addition to your pond. Because catfish tend to stir up the bottom of a pond, we recommend stocking 50-100 per surface acre for most ponds. If your goal is a catfish pond, stock fertile water with up to 200 per surface acre. Fathead Minnows are an economical forage species to add to almost any pond or lake. These small forage fish spawn prolifically, usually reproducing several times during the summer if conditions are right. Placing any type of woody structure in shallow water will improve their spawning success. Generally stocking 24-40 pounds per surface acre will establish a population, stock up to 100 pound per acre if you have a large number of bass, or other established predator population. Northern Pike are a large predatory fish native to Michigan that should be stocked with great care. Mature pike can eat fish up to 18, and even ducks and muskrats. Best suited for large bodies of water because small ponds generally cannot support the heavy forage requirements of pike. Stock at 2-4 fish per acre. Minimum order of 50, advance order and deposit required on northern pike orders. Seasonal availability. Muskellunge are a prized native species of predatory fish that should be stocked with great care. Best suited for large bodies of water because small ponds generally cannot support the heavy forage requirements of muskies. Stock at 1-2 fish per acre. Minimum order of 50, advance order and deposit required on muskellunge orders. Limited seasonal availability.

Frequently Asked Fish Questions
Q: How do I know if my pond will support Trout?
A: There are two primary methods to determine if a pond will support trout: the theoretical method and the practical method. To use the theoretical method, you should record high and low temperatures and dissolved oxygen levels daily for a year or two; this will give you a good idea if it is probable that your pond will support trout. The practical method is to purchase a small number of trout, stock them and see how they do in the pond. Water temperatures and dissolved oxygen levels can vary greatly from day to day and year to year. Therefore some ponds may support trout most of the time, but on particularly hot years mortalities may occur. You need to determine what level of risk you are willing to accept.
Q: What type of fish will my pond support?
A: Ponds vary greatly depending on a large number of interconnected variables and there is no perfect formula for determining the suitability of a pond for any species. Here are some rules of thumb: • Warm water fish, such as bass, bluegills and catfish, will do well in almost any pond with reasonable water quality. • Deeper, colder ponds, or ponds with a constant inflow and outflow are the best bet for supporting trout. Trout won’t tolerate temperatures in the 70’s for long. • Ponds with warm, sandy, shallow areas will support bass and bluegill reproduction. • Shallow ponds (under 10 feet) without water exchange are questionable for trout. • Ponds with aeration systems are more likely to support trout and more likely to avoid winter kill.
Q: Can I mix the fish species in my pond?
A: Mixing species in a pond is actually a very good idea most of the time; depending on the management goals that you have for your pond. Bass and trout provide a good predator balance for rapidly reproducing species like bluegills. Without predators in the pond, bluegills can quickly over-populate and stop growing (even hybrid bluegills).
Q: How many fish will my pond support?
A: Again, there are many factors to consider here, including your objectives for the pond. Size of pond, forage base, water source, and intended use of the fish, among other factors will all affect this decision. If you do not intend to feed your fish, the forage base will be a primary limiting factor.
Q: Do I need to feed my fish?
A: Not necessarily. If you have a forage base that is sufficient for the number and species of fish that you stock, they are quite good at finding their own lunch. If you are growing your fish in a more intensive fashion and expect rapid growth, then some supplemental feeding will be necessary.
Q: What is the best way to get fish to my pond?
A: Minimizing stress is the key, so the very best way to get fish to your pond is to have us deliver them, since we guarantee live delivery. If you pick fish up here at the farm, consider using our loaner live-haul tanks. These use active aeration to help ensure the condition of the fish and there is no charge for their use. If you choose to use oxygen bags for small orders, your best bet is to choose cool weather, to arrive at the farm early, and to transport the fish to your pond as rapidly as possible.
Q: Will my fish reproduce in my pond?
A: Bass, Bluegills, Yellow Perch and Minnows will reproduce in most ponds, especially if there are sandy, shallow areas available, and adequate structure for minnows. Catfish may reproduce if adequate structure exists in the pond. Trout will not be able to reproduce successfully in a pond. Trout may exhibit spawning behavior, but incubation conditions for the eggs will not be appropriate to hatch successfully.
Q: Should I kill all of the weeds and algae in my pond if I want my fish to do well?
A: NO. A healthy pond will generally have about 15-20% of its bottom area covered with some sort of plant growth. Eliminating all plants from your pond will eliminate cover for your fish, making them more susceptible to predators; it will also severely interrupt the food chain for your fish. Many of the bugs and critters that your fish depend on for natural food need plants for shelter, food and reproductive habitat. Likewise, many aquatic animals rely on some level of algae growth as the base of the food web. Eliminating all algae will remove an important food source from your pond, even if your fish don’t eat it directly. This is not to say that weeds and algae can’t get out of control. Too much of these plants can also put your pond out of balance, causing problems for your fish as well as for your enjoyment of your pond. Moderation and selective control are the best ideas in most cases.
Q: How can I avoid “fish kills” and “winter kill” on my pond?
A: Generally, fish kills are related to oxygen depletion issues. In the warm months, highly stratified ponds can “turn over” during a weather event like a thunderstorm. The result is that there is an inadequate oxygen level for your fish to survive and a fish kill can occur. In the winter, once a water body freezes over, the oxygen level is slowly depleted because the water has no exposure to the atmosphere to exchange gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen; this results in lower and lower oxygen levels as winter progresses. If the ice remains long enough, the pond runs out of oxygen and a winter kill can occur. The best defense against fish kills is simply to aerate your water. Aeration can be accomplished in a number of ways and we have systems to fit just about any body of water and any budget.
Q: What about using Grass Carp to control the weeds in my pond?
A: The question of Grass Carp (White Amour) is first off a matter of legality: if your pond is in Michigan, it is illegal to buy, sell, or possess Grass Carp. If you live in another state, check with your state fish and game agency for the legal status of these fish. The usefulness of Grass Carp in a pond environment is somewhat controversial; like any plant control, they probably work better in some circumstances than in others.

By offering the same brands and diets that we are using on the farm, we can offer our customers the best possible prices on quality Fish Feeds. From time to time, we may offer other brands of feed for sale, but you can always be assured that the feed we are using on the farm is top quality and will give you good results with your own fish.
FEEDING YOUR FISH We are frequently asked about the “right way” to feed fish in a pond. The correct answer to this question varies somewhat from pond to pond depending on the objectives of the pond owner.
species, supplemental feeding can be very helpful and in some cases, necessary.
In some cases, the fish in a pond may not require any supplemental feeding. If the pond is an established body of water, with a balanced population of both predatory fish and forage species, and the owner is happy with a natural growth rate, there may be no absolute need to supplement.
How much feed to give the fish can vary from day to day, and will also vary with water temperature. However, the rule of thumb is to give the fish the amount of feed that they will completely consume in about 15 minutes. Avoid wasted feed, it fouls the water and wastes money. Fish can be fed more than once per day to maximize growth, but avoid waste during any feeding.
On the other hand, if the owner is looking to maximize growth of fish, or if the pond is maintained with a predominant population of any one
In summer, when oxygen levels tend to be lowest, feed earlier in the day if possible so that the fish can digest their meal when oxygen
levels are highest during daylight hours. Avoid feeding heavily in the evening because this will increase the need for oxygen during the night, when oxygen levels are lowest in your pond. It is possible to kill your fish by feeding them excessively during low oxygen availability. The right feed size depends on the size and species of fish that you want to feed. Different species of fish have different size mouths, so you will want to feed a pellet that is small enough for the smallest mouths that you want to feed. Mixing feed sizes is a strategy that can work on ponds that have a variety of sizes or species.

Algae & Weed Control

Good Weed and Algae Control is “No Accident” By Dan Vogler
C
ontrolling problem aquatic weeds and algae can make the difference between having a beautiful and enjoyable pond or lake that increases your property value, and living next door to an unsightly, foul smelling swamp. The problem is there seems to be hundreds of pond products out there that claim to make your water perfect. Which ones are right for you and your pond? I’ll attempt to untangle the information about weed and algae control a bit and get you on the right track to selecting the right products in this article, but keep in mind that we are always available at Harrietta Hills to answer questions and help you get what you need to do the job. We need to understand that the myriad of products on the market represent opportunity, not necessarily confusion. But we need to recognize that all products have an area of specialization. For example, we won’t necessarily treat a Eurasian Watermilfoil problem with the same product that we would use to treat an overabundance of water lilies. Likewise, there may be circumstances in which the use of a chemical product would not be appropriate, and therefore some other method of control might be the best choice. I recommend taking the following five steps when faced with a weed or algae issue: 1. Determine the exact nature of the problem, what species of plant or type of algae are we dealing with? Knowing the exact species of plant is absolutely necessary for determining the proper type and amount of control to use. Simply throwing “something” on “some weeds” is unlikely to give you the result you hope for and could injure your pond’s ecosystem. 2. Identify your objectives for control. In other words, the amount of control that is desired will probably not be the same in a fishing lake as in a swimming area. Additionally you may want to totally eliminate some species of plants (like Eurasian Watermilfoil) and still want to maintain other species to create beneficial fish habitat. 3. Select a control method (chemical or other) that meets the objectives that you have identified and is effective for the species that you wish to control. Seek professional advice if you are unsure of what you need to do (we offer free telephone assistance and not-so-free pond-side consultation). 4. Apply chemical control materials carefully and according to label instructions. This is not a time to try the old “If one pound’s good, two must be better” method. If you are using mechanical methods of control like cutting or raking, make sure you understand
18
the plant species that you are working with to avoid inadvertently propagating the plant. 5. Continue to maintain your efforts, very few problems will completely “go away” in one season. Most problem weeds will require follow up. In the case of algae blooms, you will need to deal with the long term sources of pond nutrients if you wish to truly improve your situation.
By following these five steps, you should be successful at enhancing your water, whether it is pond or a section of lake front. There are many resources available to assist in plant species identification including books (we offer a good one on page 36), the internet, your local university extension office, and of course you are always welcome to give us a call. Taking the time to do this job right will pay dividends; not only in successful weed control, but also in money saved by applying the right control to the right weed at the right time in the right amount. Otherwise you may be wasting product that may not be intended for the species you wish to control, or by undertreating or over-treating and wasting material.

Algae & Weed Control
Pond Size and Volume Calculation Here’s how: (all length and width measurements are made in feet).
For ponds that are basically rectangular:
1. Multiply the length by the width of the pond…this will give you your square footage. 2. Divide your square footage by 43,560. The result is your surface acreage.
For ponds that are basically round:
1. Multiply half of the pond width by half the pond width… 2. Multiply your result by 3.142…the result is your square footage. 3. Divide your square footage by 43,560. The result is your surface acreage.
Acre-feet can be calculated as follows:
Multiply your surface acreage by the average depth of your pond. The result is a volume measurement known as acre-feet. Example: if your pond is 2 surface acres, with an average depth of 10 feet, your pond volume is 20 acre-feet of water.
Don’t want to “Do It Yourself”? We are Michigan Licensed Applicators and would be pleased to give you an estimate for weed control services on your pond.

Why We DON’T SELL “Packages” of Pond Care Materials: EVERY POND IS DIFFERENT, even though size parameters may be the same as some other pond, your pond is unique and your goals for your water are unique. “Packages” are a one-size fits-all approach that does not work well with pond chemicals. Let us help you choose the materials that are right for your pond. Improper identification will result in wasted material (money) and unsatisfactory results. The plants on these pages represent some of the common plants found in North America. There are many more species, and your weed may not be found on these pages. If you need help identifying your problem plant, please give us a call or contact your local university extension specialist. Many of these plants have beneficial characteristics that benefit fish, waterfowl and other animals, so care should be used in deciding how much control is necessary. A few of these plants are problem invasive species and efforts should be made to eradicate them to control their proliferation.

Pond-Vive is a blend of specialized bacterial strains formulated specifically for
the task of pond and lake maintenance. Excess nutrients in your pond or lake contribute to excess weed growth, murky water, foul odors and unpleasant sludge buildup. Pond-Vive reduces these nutrient materials and improves the overall quality of your pond or lake. Pond-Vive now has enzymes, four strains which break down waste into an easier digestible form for the bacteria- speeds up the process. Also now has a cold weather bacteria strain, for results in cooler temperatures as low as 38˚F.

Why Should You Use Pond Bacteria? One of the main variables in controlling water quality in a pond is the amount of nutrients present in the pond. Most new pond owners are happy to find that when their freshly dug pond fills up, the water is clean and inviting. Ponds that are dug in sand, gravel or “clean” soils will generally stay that way for a period of a year or two since there are few nutrients present. Over time leaves, fish waste, runoff and other nutrients find their way into the pond and start to build up on the bottom. These nutrients act as a stimulant for excess aquatic weeds, algae and other water quality problems. Along with Aeration, the use of beneficial pond bacteria has proven to be one of the best tools a pond owner can use to maintain water quality. Beneficial bacteria work to consume and digest organic materials such as decayed leaves, grass clippings, dead algae/weeds, fish waste, etc. Left in the pond, these materials will contribute to future water quality problems.

Water dyes work on the light-reduction principle. All plants need sunlight to grow. By reducing the amount of light penetration into the water, the dyes effectively reduce weed growth. Early application is critical: dyes should be applied as early as possible in the growing season. To apply, simply pour liquid dye into your pond or lake (or throw the water-soluble bags in). Pond dyes can be poured onto the ice in late winter to be effective on early season weed growth (it will melt through the ice). The dye will completely mix throughout the pond within a short time. These dyes will not stop weed growth, they will greatly reduce it.

Aeration

Diffused
VS. Surface
Which is Better?
Diffused Aeration and Surface Aeration both have valid uses depending on your objectives and the type of water body that you are intending to aerate. Each type of system has strengths and weaknesses. It is our objective to help you match a system to your goals. Clearly, the most obvious factor is aesthetics: what do you want to look at? If you are looking for an aerial display, then a surface unit is the only choice. If you prefer a “natural, undisturbed look, then a diffused system will be preferred. As far as which type of unit aerates a body of water most effectively, it depends on the characteristics of the water body. As a rule of thumb, surface aeration is most effective in shallower bodies of water, under 8 feet in depth. This is because surface aeration creates a fairly shallow circulation pattern. The flip-side of this is that diffused aeration is most effective in deeper water where it can create very large circulation patterns that extend all the way to the bottom. Surface aeration is not particularly effective in deep water, and diffused aeration is less effective in shallow water. With that said, there are still trade-offs to be made depending on other pond characteristics. Surface aeration requires a pond-side electrical supply, whereas diffused systems can have the compressors located a long distance from the pond, and in the case of windmills (a type of diffused system), no electricity may be required at all. Some people also prefer to avoid having electrical appliances in the water due to safety concerns; in this case diffused systems are preferred because there are no electrical parts in the water. By examining your preferences and pond, you should be able to determine the type of aeration that suits you best. Still not sure? Give us a call, and we can help you through the decision process to get just the right system. 37

Why Aerate? In Summer, proper aeration oxygenates and destratifies your water, this helps prevent sudden “inversions” that can result in summer fish kills. Summer stratification is a natural process that occurs in most bodies of water. Only the top layer is well oxygenated and supports life. The lower layer is cold, but has very little oxygen and will not support fish life. Dangerous inversions may occur, causing fish kills.
In Winter, proper aeration re-oxygenates your water and prevents oxygen depletion. Oxygen depletion is responsible for winter fish kills. Aeration can also be used to maintain open water in the winter as a refuge and attractant for water fowl.
Compressor
Aeration circulates the water in your pond or lake, oxygenating the water at all depths. The entire water column now supports fish life, eliminating the danger of an inversion (sudden mixing) which can cause a fish kill.

How Many Air Diffusers Do I Need? It depends on the size and depth of the pond. If we use 1-1.5 cfm of air for each diffuser (our preferred output), you can use the chart at left to estimate how many diffusers you need. Remember: The deeper the water, the greater the circulation pattern caused by the diffuser, thus aerating a greater volume of water.

Benefits of good aeration include:
•Increases water quality •De-stratifies to help avoid fish kills in summer •Eliminates winter fish kills due to low oxygen levels •Helps eliminate foul odors •Helps digest organic materials that enter the pond •Helps reduce nutrients that fuel excessive plant growth

Proper Diffuser Placement is Important for Effective Aeration Compressors
Ponds that are long and narrow, or ponds with irregular shapes or islands will require more diffusers than ponds that are basically round, square or oval. Proper diffuser placement is very important to achieving good aeration throughout your pond. Systems can be designed for any size of pond or lake. 39
Order Toll Free: (877) 389-2514 Aeration Systems Diffused Aeration Systems Diffuser Systems aerate by circulating the water in a pond or lake using a rising column of air bubbles. This is a very
efficient way to aerate and circulate a body of water, using relatively little energy for major results. We have ready-built systems for any size body of water; see our diagrams on pages 38 and 39 to help determine proper system sizing for your water.

Order Toll Free: (877) 389-2514 Aeration Systems Rotary Vane Compressor Systems Rotary Vane Compressor Systems are the standard for aerating shallower bodies of water, less than 18’ deep. Rotary Vane Systems provide a relatively high air output per HP ratio and therefore pump higher volumes of air more efficiently than other compressor types. Vanes should be replaced approximately every 18 months. Because these units produce significant amounts of heat, they should be housed with adequate ventillation; we recommend our SC22D Locking Steel Cabinet with Cooling Fan (page 49). All rotary vane units are available in 115 volt or 230 volt, please specify preference when ordering. All three systems are also available as Deluxe Aeration Systems, see page 43 for details.

Let the Wind Aerate your pond; improve water quality and prevent fish kills. Windmills are the ideal way to aerate your pond without the need for an electrical connection. These windmills can be located hundreds of feet from the pond to optimize the location of the windmill. Windmills also reduce icing in the winter and prevent winter-kill.
Beckermills pump 60% more air than competitive windmills and feature easy assembly.

Muskrats can become a destructive nuisance in ponds. The most effective way to deal with a muskrat problem is trapping. Remember that muskrats are rodents and share similar characteristics with their smaller brethren (rats and mice) including a very high reproductive rate. A couple of muskrats now can mean many of them in a short time. Set traps in observed muskrat runs and den entrances. Body grip traps should always be set in the water to avoid catching animals other than muskrats.
Thoughts on Live Traps — some people prefer the idea of live trapping these animals and releasing them somewhere else. Remember that you are trapping them because they have become a destructive problem; releasing these animals at another location is likely to simply give your problem to someone else and may be illegal in some states.
#110 Body Grip Trap — The professional’s choice. This simple trap is very effective at quickly eliminating your muskrat problem. Simply set the trap in a muskrat run or bank den entrance, since muskrats are primarily nocturnal, you will usually catch your ‘rat by morning. 4 ½” spread. AO110 #110 Body Grip Trap $10.00 AO1106 1/2 Dozen #110 Body Grip Traps $57.99
Muskrat Box Trap —
Set this trap, fully submerged, in a run or bank den entrance. Trap will catch multiple ‘rats at a time, quickly bringing muskrat populations under control. (SWt.#8) AOMBT

We recommend using the Setting Tongs found on this page with these large traps. #220- This trap has a 7” spread with two springs, use for raccoon and woodchucks SE220 #220 Body Grip Trap $18.00 #330- This trap has a 10” spread with two springs, use for otter and beaver SE330 #330 Body Grip Trap $34.00
Trap Setting Tongs for Body Grip Traps-
