lanning and executing a wedding reception requires many challenging decisions that begin with simply deciding where, what and when. When choosing where, keep in mind that a small group offers more choices of wedding venues. Groups of 100 or more guests are limited to just a few larger, quite capable facilities on the Island. If your guest list is long and you’ve selected a Saturday for your wedding, you should make ceremony and reception reservations at least nine to twelve months in advance. If you are having a smaller event, planning is much easier. If you and your fiancé plan to elope to the Island to be married, almost all of the bed & breakfasts, inns, and hotels on Mackinac can offer you last minute helpful service and advice. Larger hotels have on-site wedding coordinators you may consult who can take care of details at the hotel, or you

can hire a professional coordinator to completely handle all of the details from beginning to end. Start by making some calls or emails to get initial information and availability, then things will quickly begin to fall in place. Each hotel offers its own unique features and loca-

The mansion, originally known as Cudahy Manor, is turn of the century Tudor architecture and offers 16 captivating guest rooms featuring views of the Inn’s expansive grounds. The Summer House contains 29 richly appointed studio and two-bedroom suites, decorated in a classic summer cottage style with a Victorian influence. The Island House Hotel overlooking the east end of the marina is one of the most charming Victorian hotels on the Island. Todd Callewaert and his family, who own and operate this classic landmark hotel, suggest treating your guests to a cocktail reception on their delightful verandah overlooking the harbor and marina. “It’s a beautiful setting with a spectacular view, in the traditional Victorian style our hotel maintains. We are the oldest operating hotel on Mackinac Island, dating back to 1852,” says Mr. Callewaert. Wedding ceremonies are performed outdoors in the wedding gazebo or on the front verandah which provides an outdoor ambiance yet is sheltered from inclement weather. Lunch or dinner for up to 180 guests is offered

in the elegant 1852 Grille Room. For receptions with up to 50 guests, choose the private Webster Room for a meal service creatively tailored to your specific requests. Both Island House dining rooms are also ideal for rehearsal dinners the night before the ceremony. For a more casual reception or rehearsal dinner, the Ice House Restaurant located at the Island House will accommodate up to 40 guests for dinner offering a full bar and charming ambiance. An adjacent garden offers an outdoor setting for a barbecue for up to 100 guests. Contact the Island House Hotel, 800-399-0403 for details. The Harbour View Inn is one of the Island’s most popular locations for smaller ceremonies and receptions. Couples may exchange vows in the beautiful garden, courtyard gazebo, the verandah overlooking Mackinac’s magnificent harbor, the private side yard or the lush green front lawn. The Victorian parlor provides the perfect location for a cozy indoor ceremony. The charming dining room accommodates receptions for up to 60 guests. French doors, lining one side of the room, open onto a terrace for both indoor and outdoor seating. Harbour View's on site coordinator can assist you with all your plans. Located on Main St., next door to Ste. Anne’s Church, this original structure was built in 1820. In 1995 the home was transformed into a 65 room historic inn. Rooms and suites with beautiful garden or harbor views are available. Bridal suites have in-room whirlpool tubs for honeymooners. To inquire or to receive a packet of information, please contact their wedding consultant year round at 906 847-3647. The Chippewa and Lilac Tree Hotels offer several choices for rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, after glows and bridal parties. At the Chippewa Hotel, the Pink Pony Patio provides a gorgeous setting for a private waterfront gathering of family and friends for up to 100 guests. The smaller, covered Waterfront Deck offers a scenic dining experience for up to 50 people. If a more formal setting is desired, the

Rehearsal Dinners

T

he rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family the night before the big day, and Mackinac offers a variety of venues to set the tone for a perfect evening. Nearly all of the Island's fine dining establishments can host your rehearsal dinner in style. For a truly unique Mackinac experience, treat your wedding guests to The Cannonball at British Landing. Located at a beautiful outdoor location far from the hustle and bustle of the busy downtown area, The Cannonball provides special opportunities for an evening to remember. Imagine your guests climbing aboard a horse-drawn wagon for a scenic ride along the Island's serene shoreline. A wedding ceremony can take place on the Cannonball's tranquil beach with the iconic Mackinac bridge as your backdrop. Follow with a sumptuous buffet style reception, or a more casual BBQ dinner. At the end of the event, gather your guests for a hayride along the shoreline road back into town while taking in the water views and the cool summer breeze off the lake. You can even bring your own beverages along with you for the ride! For more information contact Jack Armstrong at 906-847-0932. For a more traditional rehearsal dinner or reception, consider the Yankee Rebel Tavern. Located on Astor Street in the center of downtown, the Yankee Rebel has gained a reputation as one of the Island's finest restaurants. Their excellent food, attentive service, and lovely understated dĂŠcor make this a perfect place for large groups or a small, intimate dinner gathering. Count on the Yankee Rebel to exceed all of your expectations. Call 906-847-6249, or view their website to make a reservation request. After dinner, enjoy live music and dancing at their sister establishment Horn's Gaslight Bar, located just around the corner. Another singularly Mackinac way to plan a rehearsal dinner is aboard a boat 12 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

cruise on one of the three ferry companies, Arnold Line, Shepler's and Starline. Imagine seeing the island from the water, or cruising under the Mackinac Bridge while partaking in a delicious, intimate catered dinner easily arranged through one of the Island's fine dining establishments. To add to the experi-

ence, live music can easily be arranged. For more information, telephone numbers can be found in the wedding directory on page 23. For couples wanting an elegant venue, consider the classically beautiful Harbour View Inn. Tucked away from main street next to Ste. Anne's Church,

Mackinac offers three notably unique churches, and outdoor ceremonies are permitted in many beautiful settings. Weddings held on State Park property are subject to a nominal $150 permit fee. This includes the East and West Bluffs, Windermere Point, and Marquette Park. Call the State Park office for details at 906847-3328. For gatherings of up to 160 people, the $800 fee reserves two consecutive hours for dedecorating, the ceremony itself, photographs and clean up. A Mackinac State Historic Parks host will be on hand to assist with any ceremony concerns. Wedding rehearsals may also be arranged at no additional cost. To help fill the sanctuary with

sound, an electric keyboard is available at no charge. You can also arrange an acoustic guitar, flute or bagpipe to be played from the balcony during the ceremony. After the kiss, the old church bell may be rung by one of your guests to mark the occasion. Mackinac State Historic Parks is

making "something old and something new" available for your wedding venue. Fort Mackinac, built in 1780, offers a stunning wedding venue overlooking the Mackinac Island harbor. Your reception can follow on the fort grounds, with dinner served at the Tea Room operated by Grand Hotel.

The Wedding Ceremony Nearby, on a secluded wooded bluff, the original Somewhere in Time Gazebo is also available for your wedding vows. This gazebo was the actual structure used on Mackinac Island in the famous movie Somewhere in Time, filmed in 1979 starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. If you are having a smaller intimate wedding, Mackinac State Historic Parks will offer Mission Church for any "non-Saturday" ceremony for just $500. This insures every bride can have their dream wedding at an affordable price. If you have some flexibility in your wedding plans, interested in a discount and would consider a non Saturday for your wedding, contact the State Park office at 231-436-4100 for information on having your wedding at one of these venues. Little Stone Church is over 100 years old and located two blocks from Main Street, nestled adjacent to Grand Hotel Jewel Golf Course. The warmth and security of the sanctuary assure you are never threatened by inclement weather as your wedding is celebrated beneath the glow of the magnificent stained glass chancel window. Little Stone Church is charming and very romantic and available for wedding services or vow renewals for your Christian wedding of any denomination from mid-May until early-Oct. Maximum seating is 200 and the thirty-minute service is written specifically for Island weddings.

The ceremony fee covers all aspects of the services, including the rehearsal, the minister and organ/piano music played by their organist. Proceeds from our weddings help support our community outreach programs. Whatever outfit you choose, make sure the boys are comfortable, while still remaining faithful to the overall tone of your wedding. A pair of colorful socks is a cute way to pull in some personality without making a spectacle. "Of course black is the classic tuxedo color of choice, but we're seeing a lot of gray, charcoal, tan and brown colored tuxedo requests," says Jack Armstrong at Mackinac Tuxedo. S

ince your wedding pictures will capture one of the most significant events of your life, it's easy to see why photography is a very important part of the day. From West Bluff vistas to beautiful wedding portraits, Mackinac makes everything look amazing because it is an amazing place. Since you've already invested a considerable amount of time and money for your dream wedding, how do you make sure that after it's over there are no regrets over your pictures? Simple; hire only a local Mackinac Island photographer! Many times a family member or friend will offer to photograph your wedding. They come expecting to combine a vacation with taking some photos, then charge you for their expenses. You might think hiring a friend to shoot your destination wedding sounds appealing, but you're gambling with images of the most

important days in your life. Instead, hire someone with local experience taking photos on Mackinac. Local Mackinac photographers know the best places to take photos, based on their experience. They know the seasonal locations, the foliage, the weather and of course the lighting. Having your photographer equipped and "Island-ready" with bicycle transportation means they're able to go to numerous locations with you for photos, instead of being limited to just one or two places. A photographer not familiar with the Island is not going to be comfortable working with the horses and carriages and may even have to ride with you in your wedding carriage after the ceremony. A local photographer should offer to spend time with you on the phone to get to know you and discuss your wedding day schedule. If you are coming for an

advance visit, try and set up a personal meeting to get acquainted with your photographer. "We're really in the relationship business," says Christi Dupre of Island Photo. "Our photographers have plenty of photo experience on the Island and know how to be in the right place, ready to capture the emotions, the excitement and the love that flows between people at weddings," Christi explains. "Our photographers are always posing, moving, studying, scrutinizing and following you to capture those perfect pictures - priceless images that are important today and 50 years from now," “Riding around the Island in a beautiful wedding carriage is a memorable event best captured by a photographer with Island experience," says Jeffrey Dupre. "Our photographers follow the bridal carriage on bicycles allowing us the mobility to capture the most unique Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 25

moments of your wedding. We are able to be in the right place and stop at the best locations for perfect pictures of the bride and groom." "Having two experienced photographers shooting a slightly different style will result in better pictures of your wedding," says Kate Dupre of Island Photo. What type of photography style are you interested in? Documentary? Portraiture? Fine Art? Perferably a combination of all styles. Weddings evoke a variety of action and emotions that need to be captured, using a variety of photography

Your photographer should follow you on their bikes to beautiful locations, with all their camera gear, to get the best photos. styles. There is no other form of professional photography that requires a more diversification of skills. Make sure you choose someone capable, someone local. After the wedding, the photographers's job is just beginning. Capturing the images on the wedding day is only the first step. A good photographer will spend even more time on the computer in the "post-production" phase, sorting, analyzing, color correcting, retouching and enhancing your photos. Editing and retouching combined with shooting is an essential part of the job. "Post production, using the latest photo editing software, makes your images absolutely perfect", says Jeffrey Dupre of Island Photo. "An amateur photographer or family friend rarely has the experience to do what we do. We spend hours perfecting the images, every single one is worked on," explains Jeff. Good communication with your photographer is also essential. When making initial contacts, consider personality and experience rather than just price. Your photographer should be helpful in suggesting ideas without being overly agree26 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

able to impossible requests. They also should be able to offer photo package and prices that fit your wedding budget. Numerous weddings take place every weekend from May until the end of October. Be sure to reserve your photographer at least six months in advance so you get your first choice of the best local

professionals. Mid week weddings offer more availability and sometimes special pricing too. Engagement photos are also very popular as the scenery on Mackinac Island is diverse and beautiful and offers romantic places for photographs.

But when it comes to news about your wedding, tradition continues to reign. It's that distinct, personalized invitation physically mailed to your guests that happily beckons them to your special day. First impressions are lasting, starting with your save the date card, or the wedding invitations you send. "Capture the magic and beauty of your Mackinac wedding, not just in your invitation but in all of your wedding stationery," explains Grace Armour of Great Turtle Creations. Grace can create custom invitations, save the date cards, wedding ceremony programs, thank you notes, table seating cards, menus, maps and more. “Gone are the plain black and white programs,” says Ms. Armour. Today you can send almost any style of creative, custom printed keepsake that reflects your individual personality and taste. The invitation is often a likeness of the wedding and sets the tone for what kind of event is planned. o Mackinac Island wedding is complete without taking a horse drawn carriage ride. Lovers for centuries have used the horse and buggy to parade around Mackinac’s peaceful, scenic roads. A bride arriving to her wedding ceremony in an elegant carriage makes an unforgettable grand entrance. After the ceremony, the bride and groom can continue with a romantic ride through the Island, feeling like royalty and having that romantic time to themselves. A bottle of champagne can be brought along so the couple can celebrate with some bubbly or they can just relax as new husband and wife to the cadence of two high stepping horses. There are locally owned carriage companies on the Island that offer per-

sonalized, private wedding carriages for charter and each company has several colors and styles to choose from. The carriages are paired with a team of handsome horses and a driver dressed to accent the carriage. All carriages offer retractable tops and side window panels that can go up to protect the couple in case of bad weather. Many carriage rides begin by picking up the bride and bringing her to the wedding ceremony. If you choose to do this, the carriage will need to be rented for additional time beyond one hour. After the ceremony, the bride and groom climb onto their pretty carriage while family and friends watch, taking photos, as the couple wave goodbye and ride off. During the ride, guests have a chance to make their way to the recep-

tion or dinner, allowing the couple time to be alone together. When the carriage ride is over, guests are usually in place and the newly married couple make their big entrance at the reception. Be sure your photographer follows your carriage on their bicycle to beautiful areas for wedding pictures. Carriages are rented by the hour which is enough time after the ceremony to ride through the Island stopping for photographs at various locations. The carriage route is usually determined by your pickup location, reserved time, weather, wind, and time of day but usually your photographer and the driver determine the best route and work together to make sure your ride is perfect. Carriages typically ride through the downtown area, passing by views of the Mackinac Bridge, lighthouses, and shoreline, Mackinac Island Wedding Guide 29

through the woods and atop both east and west bluffs. Many couples include their wedding party or parents on carriages too, so consider including a second or third touring style carriage to join you. Having the bridal party or parents join you creates a memorable experience for them and a chance for more photos of everyone on location during one of the carriage photo stops. The world’s largest horse and buggy livery is Mackinac Island Carri age Tours and an antique carriage from them is the crowning touch to your special day. Their wedding coordinator will tailor the carriage arrangements to suit your needs. For the bride and groom to the wedding party, choose from seven beautiful carriages in a variety of colors,

For general transportation of guests, you must make taxi arrangements for your guests prior to the wedding. Simply call and specify the time, location and number of people. On busy wedding days, the taxi company can't guarantee availability with a last minute call. where on the Island day or night. Call in advance to reserve them at 906-8473573. Wedding Cakes

O

h, those wonderful wedding cakes! Sumptuously delicious and ornately decorated, the cake is the center of attention at the wedding reception. Wedding cakes today range from traditional to the more contemporary styles adorned with colorful flowers, ribbons or fondant decorations. Each cake is the creation of the bridal couple and is personal and meaningful to them. Whatever the design, the cake adds a unique and personal focal point to the wedding reception. Kim Sperl, of Bella e' Dolce cakes says, "Today's bride is more involved than ever in designing her wedding cake. Using each wedding couple's ideas, we work with them to design a cake that is as individual as they are. Fulfilling their vision, whether it is traditional, formal or whimsical, provides a personal and unique focal point for the couple's reception." People definitely want their cake to look awesome, but they are most concerned with how it tastes. It can be beautiful but if it doesn't taste good, what's the point? As you begin your search for your ultimate cake, expect to see creations you never imagined. Perhaps a luscious devils food cake filled with chocolate mousse and glazed with shiny dark chocolate. Or if you prefer, it could be designed as a stack of square boxes wrapped in white chocolate ribbons.

Not to be overlooked is the cake topper. The traditional plastic bride and groom has been replaced by tops that are whimsical, elegant or personalized. Use porcelain figures or a nosegay of fresh flowers to match the bouquets. Consider using something Mackinac such as a horse and carriage, or a gazebo. Discuss your ideas with the baker who will work with you to create the wedding cake of your dreams.

Annie Lockwood from Annie's Cakes explains, "Bringing a cake from home is not at all practical since cakes are too delicate to withstand a long hot car trip, the ferry crossing to the Island and a taxi ride to the reception. We deliver and set up at your reception, so there are no worries!" A local Mackinac baker will work with you to create your perfect cake and, best of all, deliver and set it up at the reception.

There are huge time savings when a wedding coordinator takes on the administrative tasks such as coordinating schedules, booking meetings with vendors, and confirming all the elements and timetables of the day. Then of course, she will closely follow along the entire day to ensure perfect staging of your dream wedding. Couples can actually save money because coordinators know how to best allocate your budget, what costly items to avoid and give ideas and realistic suggestions to save you money. "I like to talk with the bride about the entire wedding day to get a feel for the couple before I make any vendor referrals. That way I am able to tailor the vendors to suit the bride's needs, preferences and budget," says professional Mackinac wedding coordinator Carole Erbel of For the Love of Mackinac ! With a coordinator involved, the bride and groom can relax and simply

be guests at their own wedding. It also takes the burden off mothers or other family members who, at the last minute, find themselves doing something they hadn't planned on doing. "On the day of the wedding I make sure that everyone is in their place and everything is where it needs to be. I have everyone's contact information with me so if I need to, I can make a quick call with a question or to confirm. This way the bride and her family won't have to deal with any last minute issues or concerns," explains Carole. Jack Armstrong at Mackinac Event Planning says, " We strive to stand out and exceed expectations through our innovative approach to the industry, attention to detail and our unparalleled commitment to our clients. We take time to carefully listen and understand what’s important to you in order to create the most unforgettable event possible. We are full time Island residents and know how to get things done. These qualities, combined with prompt, professional dealings with ven-

arie grew up in Michigan but went to school in Boston where she met her fiance' Shiliang. There was no question, Mackinac Island was where she wanted to be married. Even though Shiliang and many of the guests had never been to Mackinac, it was the perfect destination for their wedding. Everyone was enchanted by the Island's Victorian architecture, horses and unique physical features. A charming ceremony at Mission Church was followed by a romantic carriage ride to several beautiful locations for photos. Bridal Flowers G

lorious flowers! It would be hard to imagine any wedding without them, lots of them. Every bride wants her wedding to be memorable and the choice of flowers or arrangements should reflect her specific taste and personality. Your flowers should create a theme, follow a color scheme and overall enhance the setting of your wedding day. Selecting a local florist who knows the Island will ensure that you receive the freshest flowers and superior service, delivered on time to the right location. Don't try to bring your flowers from your home-town florist. Florists in this wedding guide know the Island's logistics and can make sure that your floral arrangements are handled with the utmost care. "A good florist can get any type of flower you want at any time" says Jay Porcaro of Weber's Floral and Gifts. "However, by selecting certain flowers during their season, you can save money and get the freshest floral bouquets." Think about where you want flowers to play a role in your wedding. Select your bridal bouquet and bouquets for the wedding party members, flowers for the ceremony location, carpets of fresh petals for an outside wedding, flowers at the tables and around the reception facility. Family heirlooms such as lace, photographs, costume and antique jewelry can be included into the bridal bouquets and wedding flowers, adding a special touch that can represent someone or something of importance. Remember, make your bouquet the priority. "Gone are the days where a swatch from a bridesmaid dress dictates the choice of the wedding bouquet," says Alex Belonga of St. Ignace Greenhouse and Florist. "Sending images from the Internet such as Pinterest pins will help your consultant see things you like. Talking on the phone or emailing 40 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

you during the process of creating the floral design and helping make decisions within your budget, is an important part of being a good designer." Contact the professionals at St Ignace Greenhouse at 906-643-9480. Margaret's Garden, the flower shop at the Grand Hotel, has been pro-

viding cut flowers and arrangements to Island visitors and residents for over fifty years. Their aim is to create beautiful floral pieces to enhance your gathering whether it is a wedding, a dinner, a luncheon or any special event you may be planning on Mackinac Island. Should you be inter-

Music and Entertainment

M

usic can make or break a wedding celebration. Music at your ceremony sets the mood for the entire service, and selecting a musician or a professional DJ to handle the music needs at the ceremony is a wise investment. Fortunately, there are local and experienced musicians and disk jockeys right on Mackinac, so you do not need to look elsewhere and pay transportation costs to bring musicians from off the island. There are so many details to consider when planning a wedding that brides can set music on the back burner. Yet, in a recent survey from Bride and Groom Magazine, 72% of all brides say they would have spent more time choosing their musical entertainment. When asked, 81% of guests say what 42 Mackinac Island Wedding Guide

they remember most about a wedding is the music and entertainment. What musical genre best reflects your personalities and inspires the ambiance you want to create? Groovy funk or string quarter? Classic guitar or jazz piano? Some musicians can play a variety of styles and can adapt

ambiance, emotions and life into a wedding and wedding reception," says pianist Steve August. Listening to many examples of the musicians music can really help couples decide if this is a good fit for them. Many musicians like Steve can work solo or work with other musicians depending on space and budget. Having a guitar at your ceremony is as easy as contacting professional Roger Humphrey who plays at numerous weddings on Mackinac Island. Having experience at transporting equipment on an island without automobiles is an important consideration when choosing a musician. After the ceremony, imagine accomplished bagpiper D.Gregor MacGregor III, leading the bride and groom down the aisle, followed by the entire wed-

ding party. This is a perfect match for Mackinac Island and an addition to your wedding that will never be forgotten!

RECEPTIONS

Music for your reception is largely a choice of preference. Many receptions utilize their musicians for the

cocktail hour so that guests can mingle and talk with light music in the background. According to pianist Steve August, many smaller receptions choose a pianist to interact with the guests, playing favorite tunes that guests can dance, listen, or even sing along to.

GET THE PARTY GOING

A DJ or emcee is essential to the overall success of any wedding reception - of any size. The local DJs on Mackinac are experienced and properly equipped. "DJ's these days are artists in their own rights," says Brevin Cawthorne of DJ Brevin. "Most couples have a style of music they like and some 'must have' song selections, and the rest is up to the DJ to create the mood and to lead the party without being pushy or overly showy. " A DJ's assignment is working with the bride and groom on music selection, scheduling the general flow of the evening's events, arranging special dances, assisting guests with requests, flash mob dances, special dances, etc. The DJ also coordinates timing with the hotel staff and basically is the project manager of the reception. Hiring a DJ who knows the staff and requirements of the Island hotels is essential. Ask your DJ if he will have a cordless microphone so the toasts can be given beside the bride and groom

and guests can watch their reactions. One important DJ duty is to announce the arrival of the immediate families and the wedding party into the reception. Brevin Cawthorne of DJ Brevin says, “ You should provide the disc jockey with a complete list of names and the correct pronunciation of those to be introduced." A DJ should also use quality microphones and equipment, as well as have a wide selection of current popular music. Like every other aspect of your wedding, it takes planning to make all of the details come together. The first step is to talk to your DJ or musicians. DJ Skip from Angelic Entertainment says, "I always try to talk with my clients as much as possible prior to the

Formalities such as the toasts, cake cutting, bouquet toss, first dance and special bridal dances need to be discussed. Also, confirm the ending times, and can they be extended?

FIRST DANCE

The first dance is traditionally an important part of the reception. Choose a song that really says something about you as a couple. Think about what makes you unique as a pair and try to find a song whose lyrics mimic those sentiments. Are you

If you can take dance lessons, try rocking' out to the Rumba or the Tango, or learn how to swing dance rather than performing a basic Waltz. Rehearsed dances are real crowd pleasers.

AFTER GLOW

Some hotels have a 10:00 pm cut off time for your reception music because of the noise, but its easy to keep the party going even after a midnight cut off. Have a predertmined plan to head downtown to any of the high energy dance bars that stay open until 2:00 am. Many weddings include plans for an afterglow at another location, where everyone, young and old, can rejoin and keep the party going!
