Everyone has a story. Here at McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, we love to hear a good story. Whether it’s your story or one from a patient you’ve helped, each story reminds us of why we’re here—to help you make an impact in patients’ lives. Each of you has a story of what inspired you to give, why you value quality health care, or how your parents taught you that giving back is “just the right thing to do.” Each of our patients has a story too—of how an important procedure saved his or her life, how a nurse managed his or her care perfectly, or how a doctor’s expertise made the difference between living and living life to its fullest. These stories are worth sharing, because each one tells the greater story of our community: a collective of individuals, families, friends, and neighbors coming together to do what’s best for everyone. We’re sharing just a few of those stories with you in this report—though there are hundreds more—in the hopes that you will be reminded of how you are impacting people, making a difference, and changing lives for the better. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your story.

Dear Friends, Thank you for making McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation and McLaren Northern Michigan what they are today. Your generosity enabled the Foundation to disburse more than $4.1 million in 2017 to support health care and wellness in communities throughout northern Michigan. We are grateful to all of you for giving so generously of your time and resources. These pages share only a fraction of the many ways your gifts have made an impact. Your gifts continue to strengthen our health care network, and allow us to continue to serve our patients just as we would our own family members. Thank you! With sincere gratitude,

Elise F. Hayes Board Chair

A STORY OF

healing

On September 14, 2017, John Sexton suffered a heart attack and was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) at McLaren Northern Michigan. Because his body was without oxygen for so long, doctors put him in a hypothermic state. During this time, ICU nurse, Wendy Szymoniak, CCRN, RN, showed extraordinary care and concern for John and his family. “We had so many questions,” said John’s wife Shelly (who works in transport at the hospital), remembering that day. “Wendy was absolutely amazing. She came in early to see him, and she never seemed to get tired of answering our questions. She was always explaining things, and she kept saying ‘Don’t give up hope!’“ After several days in the hospital, John did recover and was eventually released to go home. Shelly and John wanted to find a way to thank Wendy for the hope and care she had given them during his stay. They decided to make a Guardian Angel donation to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation in Wendy’s honor. The Guardian Angel program allows patients and/or their families to recognize McLaren Northern Michigan colleagues for excellent care. Colleagues receive a certificate of recognition and a Guardian Angel pin. The donation supports programs and services that will help future patients. On Wendy’s Guardian Angel certificate, Shelly wrote: “Through such a difficult time, Wendy was a guiding light for our family in helping us understand all that was going on. Wendy treated my husband with compassion and care. She was a beacon of hope when things looked bleak…We are forever grateful!”

GUARDIAN ANGEL AWARDS

In 2017, more than 50 of you honored your caregivers with 118 Guardian Angel awards. Thank you for expressing your gratitude to those who helped you during a hospital visit or through hospice care. Some of you gave $25, some of you gave $10,000—whatever the amount, the impact you had on staff and future patients was profound.

A STORY OF

2,647 DONORS

giving

Webb and Jan Martin have a long relationship with McLaren Health Care. Webb was born at the original McLaren Hospital (then called the Flint Women’s Hospital) in Flint, Michigan in 1944. The couple had their two children at McLaren Flint, and Webb has since had two surgeries at McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey. They’ve been donors to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation since 2004. Your donations purchase new equipment, provide patients with care they wouldn’t otherwise receive, and enable clinical and non-clinical staff to gain higher education. Your donations do that and so much more. Thank you to those of you who give year after year and to those of you who gave for the first time in 2017. Your gifts touched hundreds of lives.

17924.indd 6

“One reason we give is that we believe in paying it forward,” said Webb. “We pay it forward because we want everyone in our community to have access to great health care, and we pay it back because we’re grateful for the quality health care we have received here.” Giving and serving have always been important to the Martins. Between the two of them, they have volunteered for more than 30 community organizations spanning the globe from Flint to Detroit to Hawaii to here locally. Webb has served on the boards of multiple community foundations and other organizations, and Jan’s work has centered on women and children. “Giving back is really a way of life for us,” said Jan. Another reason the Martins choose to give is simply “because we can, and if we can, we should,” said Webb. “We’re not wealthy or particularly affluent, but we feel giving is important, and we’ve found ways to be able to do it. We believe in helping our community to be a better place to live for everyone, which is what philanthropy is all about.”

A STORY OF

$618,000 INVESTED IN CARDIOLOGY SERVICES

Your gifts drive world-class health care with investments in technology, talent, and equipment that have earned our hospital a host of recognitions and awards for clinical excellence, patient safety, and outcomes. In December 2017, McLaren Northern Michigan was named one of the Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the U.S. by IBM Watson Health. Thank you for making cardiology services a priority.

Dalton Miranda, MD, went to medical school to become a pediatrician, but halfway through his clinicals, he was fascinated by the heart. He decided to study cardiology, and has dedicated the past 12 years to working in that field. Dr. Miranda and his wife, Laura, both originally from Brazil, were living in Florida when he was recruited to come to northern Michigan. “We saw it as a great adventure,” he said. “Of course, we visited in June, so it was beautiful.” But the couple came to love the area, even the snow—which Laura had not seen until they moved up north. Now they have four children, and are committed to the area and to the hospital. One thing Dr. Miranda appreciates is the community atmosphere in an environment of excellence. “We have the best of both worlds,” he said. “We are a small community hospital that has the technology and resources that a large hospital does. We can provide advanced care that normally is not available in small towns,” he said. Dr. Miranda runs the heart failure clinic, which saw 502 patients last year. The program is part of the full spectrum of cardiology services offered at McLaren Northern Michigan, which was named one of the Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the U.S. in December. Your contributions to cardiology services totaled more than $600,000 in 2017, including major and minor medical equipment that keeps the department state-of-the-art. “I hope that donors truly understand that their money is used to create care that is not common or easily replicated in rural areas … Other rural hospitals struggle, but we have the ability to provide advanced technology, research, and care. It’s a big thing,” said Dr. Miranda.
