We’ve joined a new family. We have a new name. But we’re still the folks who have been meeting this community’s health care needs for years. And we promise to continue to provide the same compassionate, hometown care you’ve come to expect.

Ed Ness Chief Executive Officer Munson Healthcare

We are excited and delighted to now include Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital as an integral part of our regional health care system. You have a great community and we are pleased to help provide services that will improve health and further enhance the high quality of life you have here. Each of the nine Munson Healthcare system hospitals reflects the community it serves, and that is certainly true in Charlevoix. Charlevoix Hospital serves its community and surrounding area extremely well by providing the personal, friendly medical care you’d expect to find in your hometown. The doctors and staff here not only care for you, they also care about you. That’s one of the reasons Charlevoix Hospital has always enjoyed high patient and employee satisfaction. People are comfortable coming here and confident in the quality of care they receive. One of the key benefits of developing closer ties as a regional health care system is the ability to share the expertise developed at each hospital, and to learn from each other. As a system, we look forward to learning from all of the things being done well in Charlevoix. We also look forward to building on the services and quality offered here, adding to the great foundation of compassion and strength that has characterized health care in Charlevoix for more than 90 years. Working together makes the future more secure for all of us. You can help keep your hospital strong by using the services available here and supporting it with your donations. We are confident about what we can accomplish together, and look forward to being part of your beautiful community for years to come.

Lyn Jenks Chief Executive Officer Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital

We are understandably proud of our record of service at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital. For nearly a century, this hospital has lived up to the promise of our mission to provide superior quality care and promote community health. It is our duty and pleasure to understand your health care needs and meet or exceed your expectations. Our staff delivers a special brand of caring unsurpassed in our area and is known for personal attention to individual patient needs. That hometown caring is the kind of care we all want for ourselves and our families when medical attention is needed. We know that when you come to us for care, you expect that and more. The “more” comes in when we look at how our staff and physicians rate their own job satisfaction; these numbers are impressive. In a recent survey of nearly 500 physicians in northern Michigan, our doctors’ ranking of Charlevoix Hospital as an excellent place to work placed us in the 99th percentile nationally. For quality of nursing care, we ranked in the 100th percentile. In overall satisfaction, we were recognized as “best in class” by our employees. A Culture and Engagement Survey (SCORE) was taken by our employees together with 29 other hospitals in Michigan to assess hospital staff culture and engagement levels. In every single question, our employees ranked in the top five or better of all 30 hospitals. We continue to believe that when we have happy staff, we will have happy patients. In this report, some of our staff members share why they are in the field of healthcare, and what they find most meaningful about working for Charlevoix Hospital. Although we are very grateful to be able to continually upgrade, expand and improve our facilities and technology to better serve you, our best and most important investments will always be in listening to you and providing the best possible workplace for physicians, employees and volunteers throughout the Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital family of health service locations.

3/23/16 2:23 PM

We had a terrific lunchtime event for our employees and volunteers, complete with delicious food catered by local restaurants and lighthearted fun for everyone. A wonderful lunch complete with a chocolate fountain, a dress-up photo booth and lots of giveaways set the mood for our staff celebration. In the evening, the community shared our joy, attending an open house and having the opportunity to meet many of our new friends from Munson Healthcare.

ALL DRESSED UP – our cafeteria was transformed into a beautiful venue – the perfect spot for the community to help us celebrate.

We Welcomed New Providers

Gregory J. McBride, DO – General Surgery Dr. McBride, a graduate of Hope College and Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine, joined us in August as our newest general surgeon. He completed his internship and residency at McLaren Greater Lansing before joining our hospital’s growing medical staff. Together with his wife, Kristy, and their 18-month old son, Brantley, Dr. McBride is excited to be living in an area with so much to offer, both personally and professionally.

Jean McDonough, FNP-BC – Family Practice Jean returned to us in July – to the hospital where she held her very first nursing job. Her clinical experience includes pediatrics, family practice, women’s health, and urgent care. Jean has a passion for children and adolescents, having been involved for the past 12 years with Camp Quality of Michigan, a non-profit organization that supports children with cancer and their families. She and her husband, Shawn, have five grown children and four grandchildren. She is part of the growing medical staff at our Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Primary Care office and we’re overjoyed to have her “home” again.

If you or a family member are in need of a primary care provider, please visit our hospital’s website at munsonhealthcare.org/charlevoixhospital and click on the “Find a Provider” tab or call us at 231-547-4024.

Vicki S. Rupert, WHNP-BC – Women’s Health Vicki is originally from Texas, where she received her BSN from McMurry University and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during Desert Storm. Vicki received her WHNP-BC from the University of Cincinnati prior to moving to Michigan in 1995. She and her family relocated to Charlevoix in 2011 and love it here. Vicki particularly enjoys working with pregnant women and young mothers. In her spare time, she loves to garden and work on small projects and remodeling – in what she likes to call her “Pinterest house” – the home she and her husband purchased last year.

Loren M. Wise, MD – Family Practice Dr. Wise joined our medical staff in Boyne City in April. A graduate of Michigan State University and Michigan State University’s Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies, she went on to teach obstetrics and inpatient medicine to family medicine residents. She later served as the Deputy Medical Examiner for Kalamazoo County before moving to northern Michigan. She and her husband, a former “Sparty” mascot, have four girls and are are thrilled to call northern Michigan their home.

Upcoming New Medical Staff In 2016, we expect to welcome several new medical staff members to our hospital. Visit our website at munsonhealthcare.org/charlevoixhospital for more information on these exciting additions to our staff.

Linda Schoof, RN RN – ICU/CCU 40-year employee “I’ve worked here for 40 years - it doesn’t seem possible until I start thinking about everything that has changed over the years. I went straight into nursing school out of high school, largely due to the great influence of my school nurse. I can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. I’ve always been a bedside, hands-on nurse. I like the interaction with patients and families and being able to help them understand their health issues and maneuver the healthcare system. A couple of years ago a well-known resident of Charlevoix was here in the final stages of cancer. I worked with him and his family closely for many days and developed a real rapport. He was smiling “...at Charlevoix Hospital I’ve been able to and joking with me the day he passed away and his wife practice nursing the way it is meant to be: contacted me later to say how much the whole family with hands on, personal caring.” appreciated the care he was given. He was able to take some enjoyment out of his final days and passed comfortably. There have been many other stories like this over the years due to the fact that at Charlevoix Hospital I’ve been able to practice nursing the way it is meant to be: with hands on, personal caring. I’ve seen a lot of changes here over the years, both in the physical environment and the staff. But the same underlying focus has always been patient care and solid community relations. We have a great team here!”

Mary H. Faculak Chairperson Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Foundation Board The last year has been full of exciting milestones! Our 2015 Holly Daze fundraiser broke every record, from the number of guests in attendance to the proceeds raised to benefit our new surgical suite. Our Gifts of Love auction item raised $65,000 for new surgical patient rooms, as we witnessed some of the biggest hearts in our community in action. We embarked on our first capital campaign in 15 years. Our FORWARD Campaign started in late 2014 with the creation of the Sarah M. Foster Chemotherapy-Infusion Center, now handling almost three times the number of patient visits originally anticipated. In early 2015, we expanded Boyne Area Medical Center, our primary care facility in Boyne City, where we nearly doubled the number of exam rooms, physician offices and registration space. Both projects were funded by the many generous donors in our communities who support our work and encourage us in our mission. Another important moment arrived with our recent integration into the Munson Healthcare system. With that change comes wonderful advantages for our hospital, staff, and patients. What has not changed though is our need for support from folks like you. Hospitals of all sizes continue to depend upon the dedicated supporters who contribute to projects, big and small, year after year. We continue to rely on the generosity of our community to help in purchasing new equipment, launching new services, and providing a wide range of community outreach efforts. If you want to see your gift in action, please give us a call or drop us an email. Our staff is always available to give a tour, share hospital updates, and show you the impact you’ve made on your local hospital. Thank you again for helping us make 2015 a milestone year – and together we look forward to many more.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital believes in being a good neighbor. We provide a wealth of services and programs to our local communities, many of which are at very low or no cost. Why? Because it’s our mission to provide superior quality care and promote community health.

99153.indd 14

It’s simply part of being a good neighbor.

3/23/16 2:24 PM

We gave back more than $2 million in community benefits in just one year Our staff is known for going the extra mile by reaching out to our community in meaningful, satisfying ways. What do we “give back” to the community? Here are just some of the things we provide: • health services for those who cannot afford to pay and who meet all the criteria for financial assistance; • unreimbursed expenses when payments received are below the cost of treating public beneficiaries through Medicaid and Medicaid HMO; • clinical services that we provide despite a financial loss because of an identified community need that would need to be met by the government or another notfor-profit if we weren’t here; • ongoing training and education programs for our health care professionals and technicians; • clinical and non-clinical services designed to improve the health of our communities, often provided for free or for fees that don’t cover costs, such as health education, wellness programs, support groups, health screenings, immunization programs, blood drives, mammograms, counseling, discounted equipment/supplies, nutrition services; • support for programs and organizations that, while not directly related to health care, provide opportunities to address the root causes of health problems, such as poverty, homelessness, and environmental issues; • contributions to individuals, community groups and non-profit organizations for charitable purposes; • the loan of our medical and other staff for volunteer and charitable purposes; and • funds for costs associated with dedicated staff and community health needs, community benefit strategy and operations.

It’s about more than being the local hospital or doctor’s office. It’s about being a good neighbor. It’s about giving back. It’s who we are.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NATIONAL AWARD-WINNING SCHOOL NURSE PROGRAM The Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital School Nurse Program was one of only ten programs from across the country named a Program of Excellence by the Hospital Charitable Services Awards, a national program sponsored by Jackson Healthcare. The multifaceted School Nurse Program was created by a skilled Pictured above with their Program of Excellence Award, left to right are: team of medical Patti Howes, RN (East Jordan); Kristie Robarge, RN (Charlevoix); Kathy professionals from Jacobsen (Director of Community Health Education); Chris Signs-Warstler, RN our hospital and (Boyne Falls, Boyne Concord, NW Academy, St. Mary’s School); Sue Coen, RN (Ellsworth, Central Lake, Bellaire). serves community residents who experience the greatest disparities in health status and access. Our program was recognized for its exceptional work in setting new standards for impacting the underserved in our communities in sustainable ways. At a banquet culminating the National Hospital Charitable Services Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, our program was presented with a trophy and a very generous $10,000 investment toward the growth of our program. Kathy Jacobsen, the program’s director, is understandably proud of both the very successful program and the nurses themselves. “Through the dedicated hard work of the school nurses, not only has the medical safety in the schools greatly increased, but students have been given the opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime. One of the most rewarding successes has been the dramatic decrease in chronically absent students.” “These initiatives are not alone in giving back to their communities,” said Charles R. Evans, FACHE, Chairman of the Hospital Charitable Services Awards program. “What makes them truly extraordinary is the impact they achieve through their commitment to serving others, and the outstanding ways they make substantial and caring contributions.”

Chris Signs-Warstler RN – SCHOOL NURSE 19-year employee

“I have worked for the hospital in the Emergency Room, at the Boyne Area Medical Center, and for the last 4 years as a School Nurse in our award-winning School Nurse Program. I work with four different schools throughout Charlevoix County. I chose to work in healthcare because I had a wonderful teacher who sparked my interest with the human body and how all of its systems worked together. Getting my degree in Nursing was one way to continue learning about it… and the fact that my father said there was no money in dancing and I had to do something where I could support myself! I also enjoy working with people.

Our award-winning School Nurse Program was created more than five years ago as a direct response to community need.

One of the meaningful parts of my job is the interactions with the students from Kindergarten thru 12th grade. Listening to them and helping them sort out a concern or problem or offer encouragement when they are stressed with their life situations is very gratifying to me. I have found that many of their physical complaints are actually due to emotions, vs. a true physical problem. Many of the students deal with family and socioeconomic problems, and often feel overwhelmed. Hearing them out, offering some perspective, reassuring them, and reminding them that they are important (along with a lot of hugs) is one of the most rewarding parts of my day. Another meaningful part of my job, and one I feel very strongly about, is teaching wellness to the students, especially through nutrition. Helping them to recognize real foods vs. processed ones and the role nutritious foods play in maintaining their health is very important to me. I hope to help them recognize that staying well should be our goal and not try to fix poor health . We can’t forget the children. Our poor choices shouldn’t have to be theirs. We all need to advocate for better nutrition in the schools and for our nation as a whole, help to mentor students whenever we can, and offer them a smile and a positive thought!

Shaun Anthony

MS Nurse Assistant 2-year employee

I’m so glad I made the decision to come work here nearly two years ago. It is such a nice work environment and all my coworkers are pleasant to work with and be around. I originally started working at Boulder Park Terrace back in 2010 in Support Services. After two years, I wanted to try something new. I went to Grandvue and took their CNA program and eventually went on to NCMC to get my certification. I returned to Boulder Park Terrace as a nurse aide for two years and then made the transition to Charlevoix Hospital in the summer of “The most meaningful 2014. Since starting at the hospital, I’ve been on the part of my job is just Med/Surg floor and I enjoy it a lot. It’s nice to work with so many different types of patients. helping people.” The most meaningful part of my job is just helping people. I’ve worked with so many great patients during my time here. I feel that I can make a difference in an individual’s life and I get a rewarding feeling with the job. It’s nice to help patients with therapy and get them back on their feet. My plans are to take pre-req classes in the fall and eventually earn a degree in nursing!

Bethany Torres

Admissions Clerk 5-year employee

Having been a military wife for 20 years, I have, by necessity, been treated in many different healthcare facilities. When we moved to Charlevoix in 1992, I was so impressed that such a small town had such a wonderful hospital. So during my job search a few years ago, I was delighted to join such an impressive organization. I work with such a great group of people in the Admitting Department. The team effort that we have makes our days interesting and challenging, and creates more than a few laughs along the way. Frequently, a small child will come to the ER and seem very nervous or scared. I love to talk to them in my “funny grandma voice” or ask silly questions, as in “are you married?” to hopefully comfort or distract them before they see the nurse. Working at Charlevoix Hospital makes me feel like I am making a contribution to the welfare of both our community and our patients.

“I work with such a great group of people…” Candice Wiers Candice Wiers

Physical Therapist 8-year employee

After receiving my undergrad degree in Exercise Science, I moved out to Montana without a job or place to live. I applied at a multitude of places and ended up working as a receptionist in a physical therapy department. The physical therapists seemed to truly love their jobs. Physical therapists were in high demand around the country so it was a perfect fit, knowing that I wanted to eventually move back to northern Michigan. I feel rewarded when I can be part of the process of a patient actualizing their goals. I love when they start to take real ownership over their health as that is when change really starts to happen.

“I feel very lucky to work in a place where patient care is the top priority.”

99153.indd 19

I feel very lucky to work in a place where patient care is the top priority. I have been in continuing education courses and have heard many other therapists say that they can treat upwards of 30+ patients per day. This is just not the case at Charlevoix Hospital as the quality of patient care is top priority, and we work one-on-one with patients!

Michelle McHugh

Nurse Boyne Area Health Center 4-year employee

I had been in pharmaceutical sales, but during the restructuring of the company, my position was eliminated. I had a degree in biology and decided I would go back to school for nursing. I had really enjoyed my time in pharmaceutical sales and I loved working in the medical field. I was very impressed during my clinical rotations with Charlevoix Hospital and knew they would be my first choice for a nursing position. When I graduated, I was fortunate that a position was open at Boyne and I was hired. The most meaningful part of my work is interaction with our patients. I love to solve problems and to be able to do that at work every day for our patients is very rewarding. I am also very lucky to work with colleagues who are very dedicated to the work that they do. It’s great to come to work knowing that you share the same goals as your teammates.

“…I am needed and respected in this hospital and field.”

Brittany McMurray

Imaging Technologist Radiology 3-year employee

I work in the Radiology department. Wherever there is a need for x-ray, it is my job to fulfill that need. Many people don’t realize where we are needed throughout the hospital and are surprised by how many different departments need our help in the patient care process. A few months ago I was working in the Emergency Department when a young girl came in with an obvious wrist fracture and she was terrified. She started to cry and pleaded with me not to move her arm so I reassured her I would do my best at working around her injury. I allowed her to participate in the x-rays by letting her hold her own arm so I wouldn’t cause any more pain and soon she realized that it wasn’t so bad. In the end she said I was the best “doctor” she had ever had. I knew my patience with this frightened little girl made a huge impact on not only her but her future visits to any medical facility. Whether it is giving a patient a warm blanket or taking part in saving a life, I know I have made a difference. I am constantly reminded by the little gestures from patients and doctors that I am needed and respected in this hospital and field.

“…I know I have made a difference.”

What’s Next?

Increased Demands Our reputation for compassionate, hometown care is the direct result of our excellent staff. Because of this outstanding team and the quality of care they consistently provide, we have seen not only increased patient demand to be treated at our hospital, but also increased surgeon demand to operate here. Those increased demands speak of the quality of care our local communities have come to expect from our hospital. But the challenge we now face is one of space. Our current facility, like many hospitals of its age, was built primarily for inpatients. However, in recent years we have seen a significant increase in the number of surgeries done on an outpatient basis. In fact, 85% of our surgeries are now outpatient procedures.

Our response As a result, we received approval from the State of Michigan to expand our surgical services. This expansion will: • Add a third operating room, allowing for an additional 550 surgeries annually • Expand our surgical support and intake areas

99153.indd 34

• Add 7 outpatient beds, for a total of 17 • Enhance the patient’s experience, including larger, semi-private patient rooms with lake views • Enlarge our laboratory to better accommodate current and future test volume Construction has begun, with completion anticipated in the spring of 2017.

We need you We are so fortunate to have the generous and continuing support of our local communities. Once again, we’re calling on you to help build the hospital’s next piece of its community legacy. Your gift to our Foundation will touch the lives of countless individuals, families, friends, neighbors – and may even affect your own.

Please consider supporting our FORWARD CAMPAIGN by using the enclosed envelope to make a gift to the Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Foundation.

MAKE A LASTING IMPACT.
